The thirty-third annual New Orleans Jazz and Cultural Festival: For those of you who didn't make it, WormTom is the quintessential host and his guidance throughout is well worth the trip alone nevermind the amazing music that the town is exploding with. Insisting upon picking Babes and me up at New Orleans International airport, he finally shows up with the ever beautiful Maria in a full sweat and ready to do his thing after feasting on sushi with his fine lady.
Malcolm, already in full swing is slamming them back at the W hotel, shmoozing with who he believes is his future wife. We drive by to say hey and he appears in handsome straw hat and dressed to kill for the balance of the evening. He decides to stay for potent potables and we head off into the warm evening in search for comestibles...Feeling hungry and thirsty, we drive around to the rock-n-bowl but are easily scared away when we see a packed parking lot and the pressure to eat something right away wins out. We end up at a New Orleans institution: Cooter Brown. A college favourite where the best oysters and po' boys are served up no frills on paper plates. A couple of cold ones, a dozen oysters, fried oysters and fried shrimp plates later we chicken out of continuing into the night and opt to charge our batteries at the beautiful Le Meridien Hotel overlooking the French Quarter.
Morning comes on Saturday and we ready for day two of the first weekend. Babes and I start with a hearty breakfast at a total dive classic greasyspoon, The HummingBird, where the grits and the ham and bacon are served up just right. Bellies full, we take shuttle service to the fairgrounds and join up with the rest of the crew. All along, we are accosted by courtesy rangers handing out maps and imparting local secrets to make our stay that much more enjoyable....the locals are to be commended....friendly as they come and wonderful folk....
We connect first with Malcolm Hunter, fully in New Orleans element grooving and clearly enjoying his VACATION. I voice blast Oleander on her cellular and she alerts that she's at the jazz tent with Perma squeeze.....the Jazz tent was featuring Matt Lemier's tribute to Stevie Wonder (featuring Brian Blade, Leah Chase & George French). Ole has never looked bettre and Peter was a sheer delight to hang with the entire time. Sun blazing but steady cool breeze made conditions more than bearable....Babes and I decide to camp just outside the tent where the weather is cooler and the sun is kissing us as we listen to a most wonderful Stevie Wonder tribute.....
This even draws gigantic crowds with fair cross section of people young and old....Malcolm joins Ole and Petre in the seats and we all join after the show to head for the next venue. Make the introduction of Babes to Ole and huz and off we go holding cold Fosters ales in hand... All the while Dean Wormer in tireless effort is fetching the beautiful Aja from the airport...she almost never made it thanks to the incompetence of SouthWest Air...thank God she did...the lady is a pleasure in every sense of the word....
Babes and I shuttle over to catch Galactic at the Acura stage and then the whole group (Aja, Babes, YGK, Ole, Wormy, David and myself) head to see Wayne Shorter Quartet (featuring Brian Blade on batteries, John Pattitucci on bass, and Danilo Perez and piano). At the same time, Mr. Lenny Kravitz is making the young girls squeal atthe Acura Stage after the Galactic gig...perfect set up in my opinion. This act was far and away the musical highlight of the entire weekend. These cats absolutely smoked the stage and lit the tent on fire.....evoking memories of the Miles Davis Quintet in sound, energy and soul, this quartet held the few hundred people in the audience spellbound. Of special note is drummer bar none Mr. Blade who propelled the group with truly innovative drumming, sometimes making his exclamation by standing to assault his set like no one else I have ever seen perform live. We all walked away newly converted to the religion of Jazz.
Hot shower and off to dinner at Bacco where the local crab ravioli was to die for and the craw fish soup has no equal. Dinner was good we ordered dessert and by the time we made it to Tippitina's to catch Dr. John, the show was over. We rode Wormy so hard for it too....digital shots of the group holding our unused tickets right outside the venue are priceless. Off to the opulently decorated St. Joe's Bar for port and brandy the Ole nad permasqueeze hail cab to take them back home....Compleat the evening with powdered bread at the world famous Cafe du Monde.
Sunday, another beautiful blazing day and breakfast with group atthe Cofee Pot in the French Quarter. Catch Dr. John, finally, and end with the energetic Coowboy Mouth. Clean up and off to Wormy's for Craw Fish boil compleat with all accroutements (sp.) Malcolm jams for group: delicious and end with powdered bread again at the Cafe.
Last day and meet with Tom and Aja at the Louisiana Music Factory to catch Astral Project. Quick diversion back to Cafe Du Monde for you know what and back in time for last piece of Astarl project. Taxi toairport and back in Big Apple fully depressed after leaving such a wonderful city.
Not much on music colour, sorry, but took no notes and just let the whole experience absorb.....
Aja: a delight. Come to NYC anytime for red carpet treatment. Same for Ole, David, and of course Tom.

| ╡ | Day: 30
Dinosaur Protection League: Actaully, most of the oil was formed between 200-600 million years ago in the Cretaceous Period before dinosaurs ruled the earth. Thus oil was made as a product of heat, pressure, and time on the caracasses of giant insects that resemble dragonflies, and broadleaf fern-like plants...
Secondly, it costs more energy to make a gallon of ethanol from corn than This is why it is a government subsidized commodity. If we used grain-manufactured alcohol exclusive for SUVs and my rusty Nissan, 97% of the US land area would be corn fields.
http://www.news.cornell.edu/releases/Aug01/corn-basedethanol.hrs.html
Also, since alcohol and gasoline vaporize and burn at different temperatures, there are increased risk of deposits in the engine. Finally alcohol exposed to normal atmoshere is ¦5% water which is not conducive to the health of a gasline engine...
Think hybrid cars and fuel cells...

Ummmmm,
Why are we using gasoline when alcohol burns cleaner and
produces a higher energy output than gas? Also, you don't
have to explore for it, you don't have to drill for it,
you don't have to refine it, and you don't have to destroy
any national park land in an attempt to recover it.
The added benefit of using alcohol based fuel is that you're
not helping to arm any middle eastern psychotics by using it.

Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting

That's right bro', headin' on down to Rooster Run, Kentucky
to set my soul free. Might just pick up a few Swedish babes
on the way... I'll let y'know how it turns out...hehehe.
You're right, I should take my bike. At 140 MPH I ought to
be there in no time flat...tee hee...
Also, one of my favorite bands of the 60's/70's was The Band.
My favorite of thiers was the song "Stage Fright". Levon Helm
and the boys had some real soul. They would have made it with
or without Bob Dylan but my thanks go out to Bob for bringing
the boys along.

Damn, that was FUN! You know you had a great vacation when you need another one just to recover from it......
Tom, David, and Maria were exquisite hosts to us all, with Tom literally opening his house to us, and David and Maria graciously entertaining all of Tom's "Internet friends" without any reservations (good thing they don't read the GB or they'd have left town!) Thanks to all of you for making Nawlins Danfest 2002 a wonderful experience.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, you are too much fun! No wonder you get invited to the RRHOF, Governor's Ball, Presidential Inaugurations, etc.-it just isn't a party unless you're there! Babes is great-so glad she came along. I'm craving powdered bread and red beans and rice already-we're just going to have to do it again soon, soon, soon!
YGK-I'm still blown away by your new stuff. You guys aren't going to believe how good it is! You DID make it back, right YGK?
ole-it was such a pleasure to finally meet you and the Permasqueeze (who tolerated us with great humor and grace). One day wasn't enough-we're going to have to go back and take the voodoo tour, then spend the day in the French Quarter exploring the architecture and local lore.
Jim#-we missed ya! You would have loved every minute of it; hope you can join the party next year.
Okay Aussie, waiting for that color thing you do so well ;o) .....powdered bread and a boar-bristle brush coming your way......

Steely-folk:
One comment that is always made regarding the members of 'The Band' is what truly great MUSICIANS they were. I would doubt if the likes of Neil Young, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, etc. would want to work with them and have them on their own albums if they weren't great players. Like 'em or not, they were superb musicians.

Why don't you tell that one to Mr. Fagen? For it is he who will readily corroborate my opinion of the Band. That's right Mr. Jackson Swill -- Fagen is on record as stating the Band were one of his favorite bands back in the day. Around the same time Steely Dan were creating brilliance on vinyl. Molly - the Band wasn't famous because of their music skills no? They got an easy ticket to fame as Bob Dylans backup band, am I right or what?
Did I ever tell you about my dog Pompe? I couldn't help but thinking of him when you're talking about Kentucky you see, Pompe is a Great Dane, pretty grey-headed now, six years and a half, they say he is living on overtime; big dogs - short lifetime (which make me shit scared, I'm a big dog too, okay, not big maybe, but tall).
So, where am I?
Yesss, Kentucky, yes, those Great Danes are not supposed to be good for anything, just a common pet they say. Keep them for company and the beauty. Useless for hunting
But I claim, and this I do with a sincere; Pompe is a bird dog.
How do I know?
He loves Kentucky Fried Chicken.

powdered bread, powdered bread...
sunday morning breakfast in the quarter
too bad Ole and David had to fly out early
all collegues alive.. that's a good thing
off to the fest
continental drifters seemed driftless compared to their old lineup, a divorce led Susan Cowsill (the voice of the band) onward 1 1/2 years later when her husband should have left, Vicky Peterson (ex bangle guitarist and principle songwriter couldn't fill the gap and no beautiful Susan/Vicki harmonies) oh well. Off to finally see Dr John and the doctor was in the house, right place right time this time.
the group split with the nyc contingent going to cowboy mouths roudy party and Aja and the worm & squeeze heading to the Count Basie Ella tribute..
off home to prep for Crawfish party - the crawfish and jambalaya hit the spot and many of my local musician friends were no shows, then we were truly treated to a great performance by our own Malcolm YGK Hunter on the keys. Never heard my kurzweil sound better, 4 originals then a spin of his Wunderground and new music. The new band is fantastic, can't wait for the full album. Some nyc comedy from the 9/11 tribute concert and everyone was off to dreamland...
caught up with auss and aja in the quarter monday am, a few instore music shows, more powdered bread and they were off for cooler climes

hi gang
recovering from a wonderful jazzfest
Jim# - we missed you brother
YGK arrives thursday and we meet for muffalattas on a pleasant thursday afternoon under clear and cooler skies... Aja's trip is cancelled and doesn't look good. :-(
thursday night I meet up with Ole and permasqeeze David to catch Astral Project in a different setting - the Maple Leaf, the new album is a monster Vidacovich, Vidacovich, Vidacovich. Hanging with David was great, turns out we grw up within 2 hours of each other, Ole headed for the front and a larger visual (hard to see in the packed crowd)
friday it's off to the fairgrounds with Malc in tow
a quick lay of the land, consumption of Crawfish Monica (didn't spill a drop of the precious sauce) and it's off to music - C.J. Chenier did his father proud (accordian cajun band), the Funky Meters got the lead out despite Art Neville's back problems, Quintology splash the jazz tent and Sony Landreth was smoking in the blues tent (too crowded to take in more than 2 songs from the outside). Off to String Cheese Incident (Hi Pat) who brought everything but the kitchen sink and kept the crowd moving, then the highlight of day one, well the musical highlight... taj mahal - brougth things down with a riveting set. caught up with ole all day on the cells and we shared reverence on the way home
friday night - sushi, shower and off to catch Aussie and his beautiful wife susan. attempts to see more music, but settled for a local tavern and an earlier evening
saturday - Aja gets a frequent flyer in the mail and averts the southwest airline overbooking disaster - we arrive in time to catch the end of the Stevie Wonder tribute, more fest food and meet up with my friend David to nail down the jazztent seating. Auss, Malc and Ole and Co arrive intermittently and catch Galactic (local jam band greats). The Jazztent sizzels with Peter Martin (pianist with a quartet), truly awesome find for me, and DIANE REEVES sits in for 3 songs!!! more Astral Project bringing the house down (I liked the open Jazz tent setting better than the tight club) and then the highlight of the evening - WAYNE SHORTER. thanks to the programing gods his quartet was booked opposite Lenny Kravitz - Shorter and company painted pastels in the most liquid colors. BRIAN BLADES his drummer was phenominal - if socrates had seen him he would have seen the ideal drummer - I have never heard a snare with that much zing. Wayne was content to let the rythum section do most of the vibrant stirring, and ended most of his tonal ventures in quiet resolution not hard exclamation point. later in the set Wayne took on his tenor sax and shredded through some of his 60's Miles Quintet work - we were all speechless
off to shower and dinner - Bacco's, a Brennen Italian/N.O. flavor establishment... joined by my girlfriend Maria and Susan's two charming LA friends. Delightful dinner even though nobody would let me pay for anything (thanks gang). As the Dr John/Marshall Ball sold out show at TIPS would obviously still be going we ordered dessert. 12:30 off to tips and a large crowd outside, must be the end of Marcia's set, right??? wrong. Dr John has just finished his house calls
ouch, a good laugh and ribbing and it's off to St JOes a local college bar with altars to catholicism. a few drinks later and off for some powdered bread...

The Band?
Best band ever? Don't think so.
Simple Music for Simple Minds, nothing else.
Like Brian Ferry, Tom Petty or Ben Folds.
I mean, why did Richard Manuel walk up the Gallows Hill in a motel room in Florida, on one of those endless tours, on the fifty-eleventh loop across the USA, the same three-chord songs, the same hermit-crab-moving-backwards-leading-nowhere... the same whining, navel gazed lyrics about my-guitar-case-has-been-my-friend-for-35-years-on-the-the-road bullshit.
Out of pure boredom I guess.
Who can blame him?
I can't understand how a guy can say he's a Steely Dan-fan and mention crap like Robertson and the Band on the very same day.

Listening to the Justing Morell Quintet now. Very, very tasty. Nice Gibson-kinda tone by Justin. Beautiful ensemble work. and the farther they stray, the better they get. No free or smooth jazz in sight. My Rival is the closest to LA jazz slickness during the verse/chorus, but only after a deceptively tricky beginning and then sliding into noir bop heaven with the bridge and subsequent sax solo. The hard bop take on Royal Scam is absolutely amazing and commences with a one minute bass solo. Most importantly, JOHN GUERIN IS GOD!! Hi everyone...Dragon your work is captivating. I may just throw my brushes away. Freakin time differences....I leave, and everyone shows up. Just my luck. LP, I stopped watching X-files a while back. The conspiracy theories just got too tedious. You know Scully would have been saying she wanted a "normal" case...Hell she had grounds for a sexual discrimination suit.lol
Mulder's looks never did it for me...He was too pretty. I've always liked men who look like they've been kicked around by life a little bit.I'd take the guy who played Frank Black on Millennium any day....Carter did same thing with it..It was a good show until he started all this conspiracy stuff...

Kama Vs. Nightfly?
I like em' both but Nightfly was more commercially successful.
My favorite song from Kama was "Tommorrows Girls". That is
one excellent song, and it got lots of airplay at the time.
Kama Vs. 2VN?
I'll have to go with 2VN because of "West of Hollywood" and
"Cousin Dupree" but niether CD really had any harder edge
songs, like "FM" or "Don't Take Me Alive", which is what
we're all waiting for aren't we?
LCPaul,

Hips,
Sorry about the McCartney movie clips. Not sure why they

One of them is really big so I can't email it to you.
The other two I may be able to.

Stevee, I already knew you were coming so I didn't want it to look like I was fishing for more shameless plugging from you.
By the way, banner LA sports weekend -- Kings force the Avs to Game 7. Angels win four straight (David Eckstein hits grand slams on consecutive days the second one coming as a walk off in the bottom of the 14th). Lakers hit two threes in the last 30 seconds to beat the Blazers by one and complete the sweep. Dodgers sweep the Cubs to win 5 of 6 on the road trip (Odalis Perez faces the minimum 27 hitters with the only baserunner getting aboard on an infield single in the 7th and promply erased on a double play, followed up by more sterling starting pitching from Ishii and Ashby (one hit in 8 inninngs) and Gagne getting his 9th save in a row (though he gave up his first earned run of the year)) Next thing you'll hear is that Georgia is ready to apologize for what happened to Carroll Rosenbloom and for what she did to LA Rams fans and to bring the team back here where it belongs.

Oh, and Fingers Shotan - knock 'em dead (as usual ... that's an order!). And regarding that huge flaming post ... when that was originally posted with me as the recipient way back when, I learned that it was 'borrowed' from another source. That was a plagerized flame ... figures. I have this old 'office-memo joke' called "create your own Shakesperian insults" where you choose 3 words at random from 3 different columns of text. LP - Since they wanted us to think it was Mulder, I knew it couldn't be Mulder. First I was disappointed when Chris Carter went the "Luke, I am your Father" route with the Smoking Man and Mulder, then more disappointed that he made that guy (forgot his name) his half-brother. I haven't been keeping up lately - but the Smoking Man shot him in the face? Sheesh! That s.o.b. is ruthless, huh? lol So, do you think we'll see Mulder in one or more of the last few episodes? And I agree with Gwen about Doggett - stricly white bread, no charisma.

hey gang-
enjoyed your 'N'fly'' v. 'Kama' comments...
true, it was a trick question. neither is better. both are masterpieces. they're just different! I do find myself listening to 'K' a bit more, because the GROOVE IS FUCKING UNSTOPPABLE!!!
Whenever I ask a casual Danfan which they like better it's always the Fly, hands down...
Now, which is better: 'Kama' or '2vN'??? ;D
As for the gas pumps at SD.com... who knows? I don't really think there's a lot of signifigance. Just Walter's art on display. It's entitled "Pump It Up"... maybe they're in the studio, pumpin' up the volume. Maybe they're gettin' pumped for a summer tour!!! (no dice)
Maybe they're outta gas? nahhhhh...
oh... and in my 'Gaucho' review I think I should have mentioned "The Second Arrangement", which was definitely a part of the album, even though it was lost and didn't make the final pressing.
great song... i prefer the demo... a shame it never saw the light of day!
I'm glad some of you cover bands are givin' it a workout.
Supposedly D/W considered doing it live in the 90s???

lp: I've had to forego watching the X-files, since it airs opposite Six Feet Under. I mean, Mulder was hot but the Terminator guy is so generic. He is whiteboy style #125 with no added bonus features. This is not enough to keep me coming back. However, the gay bald black guy on 6 feet has it goin on! Not to mention the crazy, pathological narcissist Billy. Why are mentally ill men so appealing?
lcpaul, dahling. i am about as elusive as a rash. In between sets while on the road, I use my trusty laptop to check in on you here at SaintPal's crib. You leave me scant clues to your location and the nature of your missionary work. I have spent numerous hours attempting to trace you down. I can't very well go peeking under every tarp in Capetown, can I? I mean, I could... but I don't fancy bamboo penis enhancements, which seem to be the fad in Prince Albert piercings these days.
Bush is working on a new album, which means I very rarely see Gavin anymore. Besides, he is filling every tartshell in Europe- or so the tabloids report. I am lonely and neglected, lcpaul. Do I have to change my hairstyle again in order to get noticed?

I loved the band, still do.Unlike you St.Al,I had older brothers, cousins and the like...at 11 I was listening to SteppinWolf and C.S.N.&Y.One of my brother's friends introduced me to The Band's music.(Fly if you're out there in Banyan Land,I'm still grateful!)I recently dug out a Band disc, self titled with brown cover,it is a fine collection of their work.
I like the Who, but have to be in the right mood to hear them...I've always been more of a Pink Floyd and Moody Blues kind of girl...I loved Kansas back then.I saw them playing as a warm up band for B.T.O. (don't ask me why I was there) Kansas blew me away...I liked Yes as well.I watched Steve Howe play 1/64th notes, and he made it look effortless..like he was not quite bored. We were talking about some great music in chat...Oscar it was a pleasure...you know your stuff!!!!Speaking of chat...where the hell has everyone been? Roy: Awesome story. Unless Gillian picks up an instrument REAL soon, my only hope for a musician in the family is Stella. So far we've bought her a drum and a piano (toys of course)... But you are correct about kids turning into their parents sooner than later. As I posted a few weeks ago some of Gillian's favorite music is stuff I've been playing for years.
Clas: The Band is one of the best bands EVER. I'd place them on my top 20. Maybe too earthy for you in comparison to your beloved Jackson Browne but I hear some similarities. Although I wouldn't expect a strapping Swede like yourself to fully appreciate a thoroughly (North) American band.
Fezo: Man, I never really thought about the Last Waltz like that, for it is this very movie which turned me onto The Band all those years ago. I had really only been seriously listening to rock music for about a year and a half when I first saw that flick and from that point on they've been on that top 20 list. I remember seeing it on very early cable TV. Channel 100 or early Showtime -- I don't remember? I thought to myself, "Who the hell is *The Band*"? What kind of fucked up name is that? But hey, Neil Young, Eric Clapton where on it so it couldn't be too bad... Also where I learned to appreciate Paul Butterfield, Joni Mitchell, and to start exploring the Blues more. A seminal album in my musical upbringing. Probably more than any other -- it emboldened me to explore all sorts of stuff and realize there was more to music than Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith.
I was only 14 for goodeness sakes -- and I had no siblings.
I'd say try to remember the spirit in which it was produced and fall in love with it all over again.

Midnite: great pic! got any of the better looking member of the band?
And now The Band . . . I've practically worn out my VHS of The Last Waltz. Still some great shit on there--practically any Danko vocal and Neil's appearance--but god damn, I can barely watch it anymore. It's become like some creepy mirror with vocals on the inevitably of life tumbling down among us. The concert had always existed for me as the epitome of great music conquering all. Then Rick follows Manuel to an early grave and Levon Helm trashes the whole project, especially Robertson's role, in that Rolling Stone interview a couple of years ago.
Don't think I'll be buying the new, augmented dvd.

Sunrise: a man and his guitar. Ok, a man, overdubbed harmonies and his guitar. A beautiful song indeed from The Who's most eclectic and funny release " Who Sell Out. Frankly, I'd rather listen to this subversive, happy, juvenile masterpiece than Tommy anyday. Rael I think follows Sunrise and was rock's first operetta - and a very nice one it is. Also contaied is my favorite pure rock single "I Can See For Miles", the stunning poper pop of "I Can't Reach You ", the better than Rosie "Mary Anne With the Shaky Hands" (Pictures of Lily and Mary Anne defined a "genre"), the beautiful "Our Love Was/Is"...You know there's plenty in the tank when an incredibly lyrical melody is spread for Odorono...and to think Pete Townshend wrote this 3rd or 4th? album (after My Generation and Happy Jack) when he...was...your kids age, Roy...uhhhh, sorry...

A few weeks ago, I stopped at a little bar in Virginia Beach (Jim#, are you familiar with a place called the Halfshell?) to listen to my son's 4 piece band do their juke joint set. I won't tell you all how good they were since my objectivity level was on a par with any Dad with 4 or so drinks in him, playing audience to his teenage offspring. Anyway (I'm getting to the Dan-relevant part), on their third number, they launched into none other than "Black Cow", with my boy doing the keyboard and vocal. I beamed, to say the least. I'm sure they couldn't match Danotechnics with The Damned, but they made a pretty good go of it for a bunch of guys born about 5 or 6 years after the release of Aja. The re-creation of the Feldman solo was both faithful and soulful; I'd heard him fiddling with it on the piano in our house, but I didn't realize he was so completely down with it. [Howard, he used your chordings and told me he 'he hardly had to change a thing.'] -- Often, these music major jazz types would rather have a boil implant than perform an actual pop song in public; he's played in rock bands before but this particular band hardly ever comes closer to the mainstream than an occasional Herbie Hancock or Bob Marley. -- Perhaps children are 'becoming their parents' at an earlier age these days.
worm~ I noticed you listed "The Who Sell Out" as one of your recent listenings. Please give a good listen to the song "Sunrise". It's a beauty; those kids are alright.
Clas~ The Last Waltz is a good one: Scorcese's direction and innumerable great musicians performing. Definitely worth getting on DVD. My humble opinion is that The Band is the only other North American band I would put in the category of "as good as Steely Dan", and that's no minor piece of praise. -- Some of my favortie quotes from the film:
"He told us, 'You won't make much money, but you'll get more pussy than Frank Sinatra.'"
"We played some places that were so rough, you had to puke twice and show your razor just to get in."
Midnite Cruiser~ A Merlefest? Is that where a bunch of Okies get together and turn 21 in prison doing life without parole?
Hutch~ Since Elvis Costello has worked with the likes of McCartney, Bacharach, and George Jones, what's to stop him from talking the Dan into a little collaboration. I'd love to hear what happened when Allison met Josie.

tones - I'd heard that one in Do It Again too. There are quite a few of these on CBAT, but it was their first album after all. Listen out to "Brooklyn" near the end, where the backing vocals keep repeating "Brooklyn owes the charmer". When they stop, and the guitar comes in, you can hear the first bit of "Brook" - sounds like they edited the tape but the splice was a fraction late.

The Assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy Considered As A Downhill Motor Race
Oswald was the starter.
From his window above the track he opened the race by firing the starting gun. It is believed that the first shot was not properly heard by all the drivers. In the following confusion, Oswald fired the gun two more times, but the race was already underway.
Kennedy got off to a bad start.
There was a governor in his car and its speed remained constant at about fifteen miles an hour. However, shortly afterwards, when the governor had been put out of action, the car accelerated rapidly, and continued at high speed along the remainder of the course.
The visiting teams. As befitting the inauguration of the first production car race through the streets of Dallas, both the President and the Vice-President participated. The Vice-President, Johnson, took up his position behind Kennedy on the starting line. The concealed rivalry between the two men was of keen interest to the crowd. Most of them supported the home driver, Johnson.
The starting point was the Texas Book Depository, where all bets were placed in the Presidential race. Kennedy was an unpopular contestant with the Dallas crowd, many of whom showed outright hostility. The deplorable incident familiar to us all is one example.
The course ran downhill from the Book Depository, below an overpass, then on to the Parkland Hospital and from there to Love Air Field. It is one of the most hazardous courses in downhill motor racing, second only to the Sarajevo track discontinued in 1914.
Kennedy went downhill rapidly. After the damage to the governor the car shot forward at high speed. An alarmed track official attempted to mount the car, which continued on its way cornering on two wheels.
Turns. Kennedy was disqualified at the hospital, after taking a turn for the worse. Johnson now continued the race in the lead, which he maintained to the finish.
The flag. To satisfy the participation of the President in the race Old Glory was used in place of the usual checkered square. Photographs of Johnson receiving his prize after winning the race reveal that he had decided to make the flag a memento of his victory.
Previously, Johnson had been forced to take a back seat, as his position on the starting line behind the President indicates. Indeed, his attempts to gain a quick lead on Kennedy during the false start were forestalled by a track steward, who pushed Johnson to the floor of his car.
In view of the confusion at the start of the race, which resulted in Kennedy, clearly expected to be the winner on past form, being forced to drop out at the hospital turn, it has been suggested that the hostile local crowd, eager to see a win by the home driver Johnson, deliberately set out to stop him completing the race. Another theory maintains that the police guarding the track were in collusion with the starter, Oswald. After he finally managed to give the send-off Oswald immediately left the race, and was subsequently apprehended by track officials.
Johnson had certainly not expected to win the race in this way. There were no pit stops.
Several puzzling aspects of the race remain. One is the presence of the President's wife in the car, an unusual practice for racing drivers. Kennedy, however, may have maintained that as he was in control of the ship of state he was therefore entitled to captain's privileges.
The Warren Commission. The rake-off on the book of the race. In their report, prompted by widespread complaints of foul play and other irregularities, the syndicate lay full blame on the starter, Oswald.
Without doubt, Oswald badly misfired. But one question still remains unanswered: Who loaded the starting gun?

I'm watching a TV show called "Musicians" on the Bravo network. Terrific show. An ongoing series where they have a well known musician/writer sit down for an in-depth interview. The guy that does the interviewing asks some really intelligent questions instead of the usual kind of thing one might come to expect. There's a live audience and throughout the show the guest performs a few songs. Tony Bennett is on tonight. Now that's a professional musician of the highest degree IMO. And a very, very humble man.
And since I mentioned Elvis Costello the other day I now see that he's the guest for the show this Monday night. It's at 10 o'clock Eastern time on the Bravo network.
I picked up his new one "When I was Cruel" the other day. It's gonna have to grow on me. Definitely has the in-your-face feel of his early stuff.

You swine. You vulgar little maggot. You worthless bag of filth. As we say in Texas, I'll bet you couldn't pour piss out of a boot with instructions on the heel. You are a canker. A sore that won't go away. I would rather kiss a lawyer than be seen with you. You're a putrescent mass, a walking vomit. You are a spineless little worm deserving nothing but the profoundest contempt. You are a jerk, a cad, a weasel. Your life is a monument to stupidity. You are a stench, a revulsion, a big suck on a sour lemon. You are a bleating foal, a curdled staggering mutant dwarf smeared richly with the effluvia and offal accompanying your alleged birth into this world. An insensate, blinking calf, meaningful to nobody, abandoned by the puke-drooling, giggling beasts who sired you and then killed themselves in recognition of what they had done. I will never get over the embarrassment of belonging to the same species as you. You are a monster, an ogre, a malformity. I barf at the very thought of you. You have all the appeal of a paper cut. Lepers avoid you. You are vile, worthless, less than nothing. You are a weed, a fungus, the dregs of this earth. And did I mention you smell? Try to edit your responses of unnecessary material before attempting to impress us with your insight. The evidence that you are a nincompoop will still be available to readers, but they will be able to access it more rapidly. You snail-skulled little rabbit. Would that a hawk pick you up, drive its beak into your brain, and upon finding it rancid set you loose to fly briefly before spattering the ocean rocks with the frothy pink shame of your ignoble blood. May you choke on the queasy, convulsing nausea of your own trite, foolish beliefs. You are weary, stale, flat and unprofitable. You are grimy, squalid, nasty and profane. You are foul and disgusting. You're a fool, an ignoramus. Monkeys look down on you. Even sheep won't have sex with you. You are unreservedly pathetic, starved for attention, and lost in a land that reality forgot. And what meaning do you expect your delusionally self-important statements of unknowing, inexperienced opinion to have with us? What fantasy do you hold that you would believe that your tiny-fisted tantrums would have more weight than that of a leprous desert rat, spinning rabidly in a circle, waiting for the bite of the snake? You are a waste of flesh. You have no rhythm. You are ridiculous and obnoxious. You are the moral equivalent of a leech. You are a living emptiness, a meaningless void. You are sour and senile. You are a disease, you puerile, one-handed, slack-jawed, drooling, meatslapper. On a good day you're a half-wit. You remind me of drool. You are deficient in all that lends character. You have the personality of wallpaper. You are dank and filthy. You are asinine and benighted. You are the source of all unpleasantness. You spread misery and sorrow wherever you go. You smarmy lagerlout git. You bloody woofter sod. Bugger off, pillock. You grotty wanking oik artless base-court apple-john. You clouted boggish foot-licking twit. You dankish clack-dish plonker. You gormless crook-pated tosser. You churlish boil-brained clotpole ponce. You cockered bum-bailey poofter. You craven dewberry pisshead cockup pratting naff. You gob-kissing gleeking flap-mouthed coxcomb. You dread-bolted fobbing beef-witted clapper-clawed flirt-gill. You are a fiend.

Yeah, like snakie (hey there!) says... "It's all good" As a matter of fact, she makes a great point about the Marvin/r&b influence, which I also hear on 11ToW. Could it be that between Kama and 11Tow sessions Don and Walt pulled out their old Motown/Stax records and had a dance party? Maybe not, but it makes a nice mental image, doesn't it?
Howard - got another one for ya: the bass is a little late picking up the second chorus on 'Do It Again'. Check it out. I've noticed it for years, and just figured that since the rest of the take is slammin, and it being their first album (having not yet earned the privilege of unlimited studio time) they decided to just let it be. But being bass-sensitive I still ocassionally wince when I hear that one. However, Walt's still playin' monster bass on that track, imho...

OOPS!,
Sorry folks, you can view those pics at www.banyantrees.net/nybill
| Bill | Day: 26
Hey Y'all...,
Pat has set up a place here on the Banyantrees website where
we've posted some of the pictures I was able to take at last
Sunday's Paul McCartney concert here in New York. This was
no small feat as security for the concert was extremely tight
(tighter than I've ever seen at any concert). All bags were
checked, pat downs were done, as well as the use of those
metal detector wand things. Needless to say we were very
fortunate to get a digital camera past all of this. Once
inside, roving security personel stood at the bottom of every
row scanning the audience for any sign of camera equipment.
Again, taking pictures was hard but I was still able to take
a few and Pat has provided a place here on the Banyantrees
website to see them.
One picture has'nt been posted yet because it's in the
process of being sent to Rollingstone Magazine's photo
department. I should be able to post it by the middle of
next week. Also included are a few movie clips. Right
now Pat has to do a few things in order for the clips to
run so please be patient. The "Freedom" clip is pretty
cool so be sure to check back after Pat installs the
necessary program to make them run properly.
Again, Thanks to St. Al for making a place for these shots.

Alright here goes....
1. Saw Pergrin Falcon on last trip to the Gorge. What made it notable for me was the fact that my brother did part of his field study out west one year, and their project was to try to bring P.Falcon back from extinction. He and his team would have to haul up water to drink ..ect.But it worked!! Was surprised to see falcon this far down..thought that they inhabited further North.Another strange thing...have been seeing Gulls at nearby lakes....I like birds, but am not a person who can cite you different bird names ect..
2. no
3 Aja
4.no comment, well one what an ass...eloquent as well. Lol
5.Solo, but was good with eagles too.Solo on Hotel California was reason I have disc.
6. I think you may be reaching lp...But to be honest with you, none of the things our guys did solo "got" me like their earlier stuff.Sorry! I liked Whack, and always had the impression that Becker had the same ground fog on his soul as yours truly.Whack supported that assumption for me.I don't like Two Against Nature as much as their earlier work.I loved that S.D. could lacerate my feelings, and I wouldn't realize that I was bleeding until later.T.A.N. doesn't have the same edge.Maybe like the rest of us, they are just getting older...
7. not many...most seem like a pretty calm bunch.
8.Original series..it was fun.Kirk banged alien every episode, and the extra "crew member" died in conflict..I can do the Vulcan Sign "Live long and prosper" with both hands.I think I should get extra points.
9.Don't know Gwen..haven't seen. She has a bellyring and good sense of humor. So she has to be alright...
10.No
Bonus
1 I liked Gaucho, I loved T.W.M. It wasn't my favorite.B&F seemed weary.Maybe they were sick of record label's BS. Maybe they were sick of each other....Who knows? It's still good, but is in comparison to Katy Lied....
2. I have boxed set Citizen Steely Dan. But I have a special needs child. That means not much money for things like CD's (sorry)
Angel, I mainly work with oils on canvas.I like the textures I can use with oils. Will work with acrylics and watercolors as well.I also blow glass, but am pretty mediocre with glass....Right now I'm painting 4 different things.A very traumatic things occurred to me when I was younger...A lot of my subject matter has their origins in my nightmares ect..My paintings are somewhat dark. One recent patron told me my paintings were " hauntingly beautiful". Of course I'd guess he was laying a line on me to get in my pants..lol Will tell you all the sad but true saga of my partner running off with girl from Dairy Queen some day.. but for now must go.

Thought I'd chime in on the Nightfly/Kama thang. Must agree with the Mademoiselle and find myself wanting to do the Wayne and Garth "we're not worthy" bow to her always articulate assessment of all things Fagen. So here are my not-nearly-so-eloquent thoughts -
Nightfly - hopeful, romantic, pop perfection. Makes me feel good each time I listen.
Kama - mostly groovy, funky fun. I can hear Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and the Tower of Power in there. And the horn arrangement on Florida Room sounds a bit like Duke Ellington to me.
One's not better than the other -just different. It's all good.
Fagen is God (oh wait, that was Clapton wasn't it) ;-)

hey molly! here's your test - #2 pencil please...
1. describe your last notable bird siting
2. is there a parallel universe with Bodhi and time out of mind?
3. which gets more play on your stereo, aja or cbat?
4. is the term burrito dick a redundancy?
5. was joe walsh better musically when he played with the eagles or when he went solo?
6. is "on the dunes" the maturing of the same person/relationship to "walk between the raindrops" - or for the same analogy, "tomorrow's girls" to "igy"? "maxine" to "snowbound"? or am i reaching?
7. will the new orleans jazz festers have any legal issues to contend with?
8. favorite star trek series
9. what celebrity does gwen remind you of?
10. can pat metheny and walter becker really work in the same studio?
bonus questions:
1. is the gaucho release, well, what does it mean to you?
2. do you own any re-masters of sd releases?
okay, have fun
roy - ouch, i got that new orleans joke, i'm wincing! LOL
bodhi - toom connection? i am reminded immediately of our trip to japan last may (wow, has it been a year? how sad) and how many times both those tunes would spin into my head while walking through certain areas - bodhi was there when i went to the temple of the god bodhi, and looking at his gold statue amongst a perfectly arranged crowd of others, it was a great moment....toom reminded me of the nighttime hub bub of kyoto, and aja of the daytime traffic in tokyo - it made me wonder at the time if they had borrowed that wonderful cue from dave brubeck of taking an ordinary occurrence or an observation and assigning music to it - dave brubeck has done with with the movement of grandchildren (hence the name titles in some of his work) as well as other movements - just a thought, but it is a great memory, observing a scene and having your mind connect with a particular tune

re: MC
Junco Bird has been around as recently as a week ago. Seems late in the season.
The goldfinches were real scarce during the winter, and then BAM, The males were back in practically full dress.
One landed on a branch just a couple feet away from my picture window, so I had a chance to watch him sing his heart out. I was surprised to see he didn't open his mouth to sing! His throat puffed up somewhat like a frog and the pretty song just happened. The only time he opened his mouth was for the "beeeeee" sound.
Odd year up here. Last week I was cruising the 'vette with the top off in 95 degree heat, this morning I had an inch of ice on the truck.
BTW - I have started my second YEAR of non-smoking. GOOD FOR ME!!

Steely Dan trivia, #2107
In the first verse of Black Friday, there is a bum keyboard note at the point where Fagen sings "catch the grand men". C natural against an E7 kind of groove?

Have a good weekend folks.

One more thing on the Bodhi/Timeoutofmind parallel:
Sing the phrase "gonna sell my house in town" to yourself, and then segue into, "it's perfection and grace." Sounds a bit like jazz musician variations on the same theme.
I will not post 3 times in succession even if an alien with Donald Fagen's head and Walter Becker's fingers surges out of my midsection and slithers down the hall. I promise

Sharkdeville~ Excellent words on "Gaucho", a great album that takes multiple listens to truly appreciate. (I think I'm still a few listens short on "Glamour Profession", however.)
Time Out of Mind- Sublime indeed. So sublime it really didn't even need Knopfler's guest work. But, to paraphrase the NRA, it's better to have a genius and not need it than to need one and not have it.
I like the concept that TOOM is sort of a follow up to "Bodhisattva". It's like, "Seven years ago I was ready to give up everything for some religious leader. Now I've matured, and I'm ready to give up everything for some narcotic."
angel~ I noticed your kind comment about me. You're a ... what's the word I'm looking for? ... angel.
Dano~ Countdown first and Aja second. Good call. The instrumental break in "Boston Rag" is alone worth the cost of the record. My opinion is that CTE out-diverses Pretzel, out-guitars Katy, and out-sneers Scam. Few lines have ever been delivered as contemptuously and snarlingly as "Show business kids making movies of themselves... ..."
You jazz festers go ahead and have a guilt-free good time, even without me. And while you're in New Orleans, remember the words of Mr. Steely Dan,

David....you've had more than your fair share of grief this past year....here's hoping for all good days ahead....hang in there my friend!
St.Al....the real crime regarding the Eagles is that Don Felder won't be on tour with them....I've seen them 6 times over the years, including my first concert back in '75 (tickets were $6 then) and Felder is the guitar soul of the Eagles....I love Joe Walsh but really dig his solo stuff from the Barnstorm era best....the first time I saw them, Bernie Leadon & Randy Meisner were still with them but since the One Of These Nights LP, Felder has been the real force IMHO....I'd go see them again if Felder was still playing with them.
Edd....got any new bird photos? It's been as hot as the 90's here and the Junco's are still around with no sign of the Indigo Buntings yet....the Gold Finches are pretty much into summer color though.

I too am in complete agreement with Mademoiselle Canard's extrapolations concerning Don's solo albums but I wanted to add, as I have before in other forums, that even when creating somewhat independantly of each other, Messers Fagen and Becker are still somewhat in alignment. My theory: Nightfly, 11ToW, and Kamakiriad form a cool timeline - Nightfly being set in a nostalgic past, Kamakiriad in a mythic future, and 11Tow being for the most part set in the present, especially in the case of 'Surf and or Die' which is set in an especially harrowing *moment* of loss and grief with all the confusing jumble of details that race through one's mind during such moments. I've always wondered if the "timeline" was intentional or just a product of my over-active imagination, especially since 11ToW was released after Kama. But there is the fact that Walter produced Kama, and Don co-produced 11ToW so maybe, just maybe...

Molly - that was StevIeDan of Raleigh, NC, not me, StevEeDan of Los Angeles, CA. Now I understand what you were refering to. We gotta get Molly a quiz. LP ? LP ?
I think that The Nightfly is a better album, but Kamakiriad has great stuff on it and killer grooves, like "Teahouse On The Tracks", and a beautiful ballad like "On The Dunes". In a way, Kamakiriad was the precursor to Two Against Nature, but the increased R n B treatment of the 2VN tunes work better. This is probably due to Becker's larger involvement with 2VN verses Kamakiriad. Both The Nightfly and Kamakiriad are great 'keyboard' albums. Lots of parts to sink your teeth into and learn.
Steveedan
| Miz Ducky | Day: 25
"Nightfly" vs. "Kamakiriad" -- ooooh, I *like* this question!
For me, at first glance, it's kind of an apples-and-oranges comparison. "Nightfly" is a highly-polished jewel of Fagenesque pop perfection, summing up everything Donald had learned up to that point both music-wise and in terms of his personal story. In fact, I think that "Nightfly's" perfection and completeness might have had something to do with the major writer's block he had for some years after--once you've said it all, so perfectly, where the hell do you go next? Anyway, in view of that perfection and completeness, it perhaps *should* be counted the "better" album. HOWEVER ...
Once Donald had done a hunk more living, and apparently a hunk of self-analysis, plus a musical rebirth of sorts, he had a whole new bunch of stuff to say--plus, again apparently, a willingness to explore in whole new directions. And the result was "Kamakiriad," a journey of discovery in many ways besides the album's unifying story. IMO there's an almost experimental quality to this album, even though each track is as technically smooth and polished as anything on "Nightfly." Donald's experimenting with new styles, new grooves--hell, even new vocal approaches; his singing is much funkier, even riskier. There are even some "rough" edges to some of the songs--rough by Donald's standards, I mean; compared to Walter's 11TOW, of course, the thing is still total high-polish (Not that there's anything wrong with Walter's rough masterpiece, which I also love dearly.)
Anyhow--yeah, it's not quite as smooth as "Nightfly," but I actually *like* Kama's little rough spots and awkwardnesses and risk-takings and experimentation, because it's Donald doing them, and I really like hearing him daring to let it all hang out for a change. Plus IMO the risks and experiments really pay off--this is some of the funkiest and most soulful stuff I think he's done. Oh yeah, and I adore the autobiographical subtext of the album's story-arc--the textbook Jungian hero's-journey interpretations just jump right out of the speakers at you.
Soooooo ... "Nightfly" may be the absolute gem of perfection and grace, but "Kamakiriad" may just be a little bit more dear to me because of what Donald was reaching for, and largely grasped--and the unstoppable groove he discovered in the process, a groove I can still hear working today in all the live shows, and in such 2VN songs as "Janie Runaway." Subtitle for "Kamakiriad": "How Donald Got His Groove Back"?

"I feel bad for their long-time fans who can't afford it."
I feel even worse for longtime fans who CAN afford the ticket price, but not the time to wait in line for days, or spend all morning on the phone.
I commend the Eagles for realizing tickets have been woefully underpriced for decades and adjusting their prices accordingly. At least THEY get more of the action, not the scalpers.

Oh -- I forgot. Looks like the Eagles are once again raping the shit out of their fans. Tickets go on sale for their appearance at the Gorge on Saturday. Lawn tickets are $80 FREAKIN' dollars! Lawn tickets!
Unbelievable. Once again I will boycott their show on principal. And once again they'll probably sell out. The worse part is I can afford it, but I choose not to. I feel bad for their long-time fans who can't afford it.
Guess Henley and Frey need separate Lear Jets to accommodate their massive egos.

Howard: That is my assessment of Change of the Guard as well. Except for Skunk's crunchy guitar, it's their least interesting song. I suppose it could be a parody or send-up of anthems of the time, but perhaps their comedy skills were not as finely honed as on My Rival, Gaucho, or TWM. Have you noticed that TWM is a comedic dirge? I'm serious. A dirge is like pornography - I know it when I hear it. "I believe that I was dreaming, 'til the neighbors came out screaming" - which has that Hill Street Blues theme effect of spectacular crashes and explosions emoted by the lyrics while underpined by semi-visceral Soothe Jazz - yeah, love the extra-dirge effect of the '93 team on AiA...
Noticed on my wife's TV guide that Star Trek is 35 years old. Was shocked and dilighted to find that the final scene from the final "Q" episode (a 2 parter) of TNG was their no.1 pick. Following the death of Gene Roddenberry's death, TNG was dying a slow death with Rick Berman at the helm. The first 2-3 years featured some superb writing by many of the best sci-fi authors plus Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner are just superb actors. Worf was a very solid ahlf-Klingon Wil Wheaton, playing Beverly Crusher's son added just the right youthful energy + appearances by Q (John Delaney?) and other interesting aliens. Q and Hawk (from Spencer which was actually decent the first year)) are two of my fav TV characters Hawk later became the Captain for Deep Space Nine, which should have worked spectacularly - great idea but poor writing and especially deadening directing killed a good ensemble... The actresses who played Crusher and the Beta-zoid on TNG were absolute stiffs - so when Roddenberry died, the show slipped slowly into a PC coma without consistent writing or character interaction to hold it together...though there are some classic Borg episodes and a few others in years 4 and 5...anyway, they got their act together one last time for the 2 hour finale, which may be their best, thanks to Q...

to post the McCartney pics to the website. Rolling Stone
Magazine's photo department says that I have to drop them off
next Wednesday between 9am and 3pm in NYC. They probably won't
get used by them but I have to at least get them submitted to
them first. I'll pick them back up on the following Friday and
then we can post them here. I'm only going to submit 3 or 4 of
the pics, especially the one of Paul with his bass held high.
P.S.,
When I click on the movie files you posted, they don't run.
Could Norton Internet Security be preventing this also?
Do I have to make a special rule under Norton in order to
allow these to run?
Thanks.

have fun in new orleans folks
k or nightfly - well that's a real tough question for me - there is something so classic about the nightfly release, it's almost dreamy (did i just type that) - but k is also has a timeless quality and it really rocks the house on a few tunes, just love it
they are very similar in that they both tell a streaming story throughout the songs, but they tell two different stories, a romantic version of youth and life in a previous decade, and, a romantic view of the future - both have a postive and yet melancholy spin to them
so in answer to your question, i put them evenly, because they both attempt, in different methods, to do the same thing
i'm sure the musicians will have a different spin, just a sound listener here, lol
would still love to hear some of the nightfly tunes live, other than Green Street, loved tomorrow's girls live, wow, remember that?

Was checking out the West of Hollywood bass line this morning. Hadn't really noticed it before, but it has a nice motown kind of energy driving the song along.
BUT - it ain't WB playing, it's Tom Barney - that's what my liner notes say anyhow! For some fine WB bass playing on 2AN, check out Jack of Speed.
Re: Chuck Rainey on sneaking in the Peg slapping - it's a great moment on the MOA video. "They never knew it went down, they never knew it went down!". Another of Rainey's great quotes: "There are some songs where slapping sounds gooood!".
It's clear to see why this guy has been used so much by D+W. Not only is he a superb musician with great musical taste, he also comes across as a very warm, reliable and straight forward guy. No "Purdie" ego problems, just someone doing a great job.
I also cast my vote for "Change of the Guard" as one of the worst Steely Dan songs ever. Even "Jeff Skunk Baxter's tasteful use of the spinal vibrato" cannot save the song. That one-chord verse vamp is dire, the melody is awful, and as for the "naa na-na naaa naa na-na naa", well...

Steeve - of course there must be many music schools in LA, but I was thinking if it is/was the music school up in Hollywood, I don't remember the name either, it had subdivisions like GIT, KIT, PIT (Guitar Institute of Technology, Keyboard Institute of Technology etc etc...)

Sharkdeville - That was a very cool blow by blow (man, I love Jeff Beck too) of Gaucho. Yes, the Keith Jarrett song "'Long As You Know You're Living Yours" from the ECM Album 'Belonging' (ECM - 1050ST) also has Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson, and Jon Christensen playing on it. Gaucho was definitely lifted from this song. The plagarism is not as blatent as George Harrison's lifting of "He's So Fine" for his "My Sweet Lord", but it is undeniable when you hear it. Fagen and Becker were tricked into spilling the beans about this in their Musician Magazine interview back in 1980, which is when they were doing PR for the Gaucho album. I highly doubt that this event hurt either Fagen and Becker's or Jarrett's careers.
Clas - I do not know the name of the school, but both Mark C. (from my band) and J. Morell studied and also taught at the Dick Grove School in Studio City (a valley suburb of Los Angeles). After Grove, they went to this school, which I think has been closed for a long time now. I will try to remember to ask for you.
Sir Pink - I am really looking forward to the "Obscured By Clouds" flavored set. 2 hours to bask in the Pink glory. Is Soupa Dave playing this gig? (Why am I asking you? I'll call him myself ...) Ask Mrs. Pink when it would be OK for me to pay a visit to that "$1,200" Piano you've got (She will get the meaning of this when you tell her ...)

On things 'Gaucho':
Just had to crank up the VINYL and my BUZZ (LOVE "Thru w/Buzz" btw) and list the resounding merits of this fine, fine piece of wax.
Kicks off with:
1) BS- One of their greatest feats of songwriting, a near mini-suite, and one that they seem esp. proud/fond of. It just occurred to me it's like a sister (pun?sure!) to "Black Cow"with the sweet electric piano solo separate from the rest of the song (intro in BS, interlude in BC), and the outros are similar "you gotta shake it" = "so outrageous"...
2) 19- ...absolute CLASSIC Dan cut. It's the perfect radio song... again!
It's "reelin", it's "rikki", it's "peg"... it's the fine colombian!!! It's DANk!!!
3) GP- isn't that bridge one of the first things Don& Walt ever wrote back at Bard? it's old, it's new, it's... kind of blue!
The greasy disco groove is so seductive, just like this dude's lifestyle. It might take it's toll eventually, but it feels so good now!
4) title cut is brilliant... it reminds me of a TV themesong in its production, w/ the plaintive sax intro (ala "Hill St. Blues") and check the very end: total TV! TV=melodrama
The demo version of this is so great with just Don on the ivories. It's actually more ironic in demo form w/ those hilarious lyrics.
Question: how much did they "borrow" from the Keith Jarrett tune? I haven't heard it yet that i know of. I know he ended getting a writing credit.
5) TOoM- sublime. subliminal. subpar? noooooooo......
Living hard will take it's toll, but if you're Don/Walt it might also produce a gem such as this. (direct from Lhasa)
Those horns are swingin' hard! Is it any wonder the sultan of swing himself picks his silver strings gold on this one?!!
6)MR- more great funny lyrics, and a rhyme that harkens the greatness of Grand Hotel/muscatel : the whole charade/a hearing aid!!! That's good stuff!!!!!
And YES!!! The return, and final bow it turns out, of Mr. Rick Derringer, ladies & gents!!! As gritty and crunchy as anything he's done w/ the Dan. No he doesn't play the solo, but those little barking riffs he does in the intro/outro are PLENTY! They make me laugh out loud!
also, I detect more than a slight resemblance to the intro of "Gaslighting Abbie"...
7) 3WM- A slow, sad farewell from the Dan. They nearly became 3rd world themselves over the next decade. Walter anyway (i think 3rd world is about how Don rated Hawaii)
He flew down to his own private muswellbrook...
The Dan were done. Done with LA anyway. Done with that little black book.
The album's full of decadent LA types, heroes & villains, and unsavories aplenty. It's L.A .'79... Gone forever, but forever captured in the grooves of 'Gaucho'...
and okay, I'll grant you that Wendl gets a little metronomic at times, but dammit, Donald's gotta get a record out at least every 3 years or so! (at least at that time he did)
Sorry to get so long-winded, but hey, i enjoyed it.
Now, another can of worms... which is better: 'Nightfly' or 'Kamakiriad' ???
I KNOW most will say the 'fly, right? ...or will they ???
?????????????????stay tuned for the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
