Here are a few more weeks worth of signings. Interesting how popular this band remains. Judging from the response these pages have been getting, I'd say its' time for more!

This is great! I've been looking for new sources of Dan information ever since Metal Leg disappeared(does anyone know what happened to it, by the way?). Just found this this morning--looking forward to cheking out the whole site. My particular favorite is Aja(the whole thing, not just the song). I do believe it is the finest work ever recorded by anyone.

The Gaucho Amigo ART31001011@NKU.EDU Mon Apr 1 10:45:37 PST 1996

Here in Cincinnati, channel 9 plays Dan songs during commercials for sports shows. On commercials for the late night Sunday show "Sports of All Sorts", they played Trans-island Skyway. During the commercials for the '94 cross-town shoot out between UC and Xavier Bohdisattva was played.Currently there is a commercial for March Madness that features Madison Time from The New York Rock and Soul Revue Live at the Beacon album. They no longer play Trans -island for whatever reason. Oh well.Lester and Steve:the entire Gaucho album tells the story of two hipsters' journeys in southern California during the late '70's.the songs are intertwined to tell a whole story much like Kamakiriad.I have always felt that it's the beginning of their journey and they're hashing around what to do.They then decide to go to a bar to pick up women. One of them feels like he is not up to it and even though people have warned him not to mess with the girls they both decide to anyway. That leads to the next song Hey Nineteen wherin our two heroes are at said bar hitting on the near jailbait. Please respond and tell me what you think.Toodles.

Nevermind...I found out about the Hartford tickets. How about a danParty before the Greatwoods show? .Josie.

Dan Krouse kroused@ssi.msmail.hsd.utc.com Mon Apr 1 12:07:43 PST 1996

Tickets for Hartford show at The Meadows, Sat. Jully 27, went on sale March 30. Inside seats were sold out by 11:00 AM. Outside seats may still be available if you hurry. Tickets inside were $50 each. I know I got 4. I hope they play Aja which they did not at the Hartford Civic Center in '93 (just a melody intro only) I was lucky enough to be in the 12th row center and the cost was $45 for those tickets so at least The Dan hasn't become too capitalistic. Can't wait for the show. I've had to rearrange my entire vaction but I know it will be worth it. Love this Home Page.

Amadeus x.x Mon Apr 1 13:41:23 PST 1996

To Martin Swinson

I've been away for a while so I couldn't answer to your suggestion. I got the Eugene Ormandy (Philadelphia Orchestra) version of "Le Tombeau de Couperin" and took it on my trip.

As Mozart would have said "I found the minuet .... unique".

The "Rapsodie Espagnole" was very powerful and I enjoyed parts of "Alborada del Gracioso".

I also bought a copy of "Alive in America" and gave SD a "chance", as was gently suggested to my by one of your fellow Danfans.

I have to admit that Bodhisattva is an outstanding piece. I also was begining to enjoy Green Earrings but Bernhardt's solo put me off. Weak.

To everybody

Well, it's been fun. Promise I won't piss you off anymore. The "Conspiracy Theory" paranoids can now rest.

Have fun in the tour, and don't take life so bloddy seriously!!

Amadeus

P.S.

Josie,

My apologies for the original "tasteless" letter. Too bad we couldn't get along. Guess we have nothing in common, guess we can't talk at all.

To the person that ofered me five dollars,

Talk to your doctor, I think there is a cure for your condition.

Lester the Nightfly Cartonclan@aol.com Mon Apr 1 15:54:38 PST 1996

I think Amadoofus is April fooling- he didn't really like Bodhisattva. Callahan's got the plan- Aja is what all prospective Danoids should buy first. Alright, Gaucho. I didn't even connect Babylon Sisters with Hey 19, but I think you may have something there (particularly the "cotton candy" verse). Your theory does not explain the "love's not a game for three" statement, which I feel may have critical significance (is that redundant?). Otherwise, you have been helpful. More discussion and guidance is welcome.

Be glad if you can use what you borrow

Has anyone heard of definitive dates for the Dan to appear in the San Francisco Bay Area for the upcoming tour? Please e-mail me if you know; thanks much - - JB

Heads up...the Dan is comin' to Raleigh in the beginning of July....6 or 7... I don't have much (some pics), but there is a place for the Dan at http://www.spec-mm.com/eric/pcafe/email.htm Hey Amadeus...you can't ever get a clue until you strap that mute on and play Ravel's Pavane for yourself (that's me in the viola section). Hit the road, slappy.

Hey what's all this *Amadoggus stuff? Well, i was wondering if anyone was interested in putting together a Steely Dan newsletter with me. Actually I have no idea whatsoever aboout how to go about this. That's why I need lots of help. I'm Basically doing this for all the people(mainly students) who won't have computer access over the summer. If anybodies interested drop me some mail. *Amadoggus is Rolwfe's Great-Great grandfather, it's on an episode of Muppet Babies, Great Show. Thanks, Mr. Whatever, Andre' D.C.

Hey, can someone help me out? I don't have an e-mail account so please post it here. In the beginning of Midnight Cruiser, is it Felonius oe Thelonius. The lyrics section says Felonious. but doesn't Thelonious make more sense. My last question - what's a "pin shot"? Y'know, I like your pin shot, i keep it with your letter. Anyway, please help. Thanks a lot, glad to see a lot of Dan fans out there.

Like a ganster on the run, you will stagger home to your precious one. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA - that was a metabolical laugh

Steve Cox smokin88@telalink.net Tue Apr 2 01:28:37 PST 1996

I think Amadeus showed some courage and conviction for his thoughts, however unlike the rest of us DanFans. He is a little more open minded now than when he was when he first posted here, and I take that as a victory and a credit to all my scurvy friends on this list. it may be blasphemy to say here, but I don't LOVE every single Dan tune recorded either, and I'm a huge fan. frankly I was disappointed at Kamakiriad(yeah I know it's not a DAN record) and I was the first in line to buy it. It is growing on me though, and my fave is "The Dunes". I have been told that that song was written around the same time as the Nightfly album, so maybe that's why I like it. Nightfly was just one of those amazing rare pieces of perfection that had a profound affect on me as a fan and as a musician. GAUCHO AMIGO: I think you're on to something about the story line throughout Gaucho and admit that it never occured to me. So what's the deal on Third World Man?...I wait all night for calls like these...

mr. magnificent one owilde@umich.edu Tue Apr 2 05:57:02 PST 1996

I think it really really sucks that the 'official' dan wwweb site had and still has no info at all on the summer tour. A friend called me saturday night: "dude, didja get yer dan tix yet?" i reply, dumbfounded: "you mean steely dan?" he heard it on the radio that tix were on sale. I immediately hung up on my buddy and called satanticketmaster. the pavillion was completely sold out (Detroit, Pine Knob). Now i haveto pay a scalper 100 dollars for seats i could easily have slept out for. my gripe is: the dan have been cutting edge in technology forever. they seem to understand the intensity and immensity of their online fanbase so why the fuck didnt they let us know when tix went on sale? im bitter. and on the fuckin lawn (for now, until i can scrape cash together for the scalpers)

Dr. Wu stewartb@whs.ednet.ns.ca Tue Apr 2 06:43:54 PST 1996

As I just got on the net last week, I was incredibly surprised to see amid all the Dan stuff that's here to check out, the interview from Mar.22/96 with Donald and Walter. What was the deal on that? Who arranged it ,and more to the point, how did they get the boys to agree to the interview? I've been looking at the interview from 1980 periodically and have always wished that they were a little more open to questions than they have been. So what's the deal? How did the interview come to be, and will there be more of them? And if so, how do we find out about it in advance? So many questions...so little time!!!!

Johnny's Playroom tallma29@linknet.net Tue Apr 2 07:14:45 PST 1996

Mr. Magnificent One, I know how you feel. I get "Pollstar" monthly and there is nothiong about the tour!!! The "Official Site" should have SOMETHING??? I'm in New Orleans and I will probably drive to Houston or Dallas to catch them. It sure would be nice to find out where the tour will pass through and when on-sale dates will happen.

Walt???, Don??? If your out there???? The Amigo, what are your thoughts on "The Fez"???

One more thing, why are they called "Apartments" when there all together???

Midnight Cruiser jtalbott@gamewood.net Tue Apr 2 07:28:41 PST 1996

Rose Darling,

I think the answer to the second part of your question is "I like your picture, I keep it with your letter" and I'm guessing on the first part but I think it's Shakespeare. As it was last time, I'll probably be corrected again. Just trying...

Amedeus...I think the people down the hall know who you are...

Josie tahia@minerva.cis.yale.edu Tue Apr 2 10:08:54 PST 1996

Felonius...I thought it was a play on the phrase "Felony IS my old friend." The danVention will be finalized as soon as I find out exactly where the tour stops will be. West Palm Beach at the new Sony/Blockbuster Pavilion "sounds good to me." Let's have a chat session soon. And how about that newsletter? I'd love to be a regular contributer. Up for it Mr. Fogel?

The Gaucho Amigo ART31001011@NKU.EDU Tue Apr 2 10:15:44 PST 1996

I heard King of the World on the radio the other day during a four song block of the Dan.That was great because KOTW is a song not usually heard on radio.STEVE and LESTER:I got the news that Gaucho told the story of two hipsters from an interview done with Donald and Walter. The love's not a game for three line refers either to a menage a trois(the narrorator could then be saying that he doesn't want him and his partner doing the same girl together) or a love triangle. I'm not sure where Glamour Profession fits in with the story, though I feel it has something to do with the two traveler's observations of southern California and the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Gaucho is then when our hero discovers his love rival.Perhaps he dosen't even realized that he loved her until he saw her with someone else.In time out of mind he a. goes to church to think it over or b.thinks he will be purified if he goes after this person. This leads to My Rival and Third World Man.In TWM the rival is hiding because our hero is after him.He shoots the rival. He couldn't believe thtat he was doing it until he saw the reactions of the people around him. Well that's my thoughts on it.How about yours?JOHNNY:according to the linear notes of the Citizen box set the Fez is about wearing a condom.Affectionately called a fez in this song. The I want to be your holy man part translates as "I want to make you scream 'OH GOD!'" Until next time, Gaucho Amigo

I have a request for all you fellow SD fans the local radio station plays far too little Dan. I would appreciate if any one that could, visit their website, http://www.wdha.com go to their lunchtime request section, and request Aja for all the folks under the banyan trees. I figure if enough people do it maybe they'll play some more SD. Thanks any help is appreciated. I must admit that multimedia is great, 'cause I can listen to Aja, while hanging under the banyan trees. One other thibg that might blow your minds I saw an interview once with Donny Osmond, where he commented that The Nightfly was one of the best albums ever made. so what do you think about that?

Jive Miguel bstevens@sd22.bc.ca Tue Apr 2 15:58:08 PST 1996

Hello one and all...

Thanks to everyone for the great email messages (if any of you want a copy of the radio interviews mentioned in an earlier post just email me at the above address).

I just received my CD entitled "King of the World". It's a recording of SD's concert Live at the Record Plant in LA (circa 1974) -- and the verdict is . . . it's a winner, in fact it's awesome. The sound quality is obviously a concern (as with any bootleg recording) but, it's a MUST HAVE document of how SD sounded in their final year of performing, as the original band. The arrangements are solid and the performances are great. You can sure see how they tried to protect Donald's voice from over exertion; Bodhisattva was essentially a Royce Jones/ Micheal McDonald combo, Any Major Dude was performed by Royce Jones alone (he did an excellent job -- you should hear it), Pretzel Logic was dominated by Mike McDonald and they threw in an "Untitled" instrumental (which is the music to Your Gold Teeth II). Also, they included a heretofore unreleased gem entitled "Mobile Home" -- a great song, in the same vein as "Don't Let Me In". I can't believe this diddy didn't get recorded in some form on one of their albums.

Any person who calls him/her self a SD fan MUST have this CD!

It is available at: ANDRAK MUSIC website http://www.bigplanet.com and it retails for $28 plus $3 shipping.

On the moral/legality issue, I just mailed a cheque ($28) to Don+Walt (care of Giant Records). I don't believe that each of you should do this. It's just me!?!?

To Michael Packard: I'm sure this info will help you and if I find any other SD recordings I will let you know. If you want a copy of my radio interviews, just email me again. P.S. Michael, how good is the song "King of the World"? Everytime I hear the song by itself, I always get this feeling of dispair as my brain remembers that this is the last song on "Countdown..." and that the "album" is coming to an end -- weird and devoted!

To Andrew Nightfly: thanks for the email, and thanks for the great SD site! To everyone else, Andrew site is at:http://hops.cs.jhu.edu/~nightfly/steely.html it's great, check it out!

There have been a lot of questions posted on this site about SD's demo material (found on records like "The Early Years", "Sun Mountain", etc... Well, I have them all and here is the definitive word on what to buy: "Walter Becker and Donald Fagen: The Early Years" is the best. These are finished songs, like "Don't Let Me In", "Old Regime", Yellow Peril", Let George Do It", etc... These are good to great songs and are a MUST for any Steely Dan fan; however, there are many pure demo records out there that (in the immortal words of DF) have no business being released. If you want them anyways, then be prepared for poor recording quality, minimal instrumentation, scratchy vocals, and very little melody. Don+Walt never meant these for release.

On the subject of related material, there are a couple of groups/ albums that any SD fan should check out. First, the group called Sneaker (taken from the SD song "Bad Sneakers") made 2 albums during the '80's, both were produced by "Skunk" Baxter, and both were excellent! In particular, the first album (self- titled) features a cover of the Walt+Don song "Don't Let Me In" which is awesome, plus a song entitled "Jaymes" which sounds as if it fell out of the SD discography. Well worth the investment! Second, the group China Crisis is/was? outstanding. Especially the album "Flaunting the Imperfection" which was produced by Walter Becker (Walter also played on the album). This is a great album filled with well written songs, including very obscure lyrics (gee, where did they get the inspiration?). Again, this is well worth the investment, as are the 2 albums that followed "Flaunting...". On one of their songs "Arizona Sky" they pay homage to SD with the line: "Manhattan's music band on every avenue, you hear the greatest sounds, too much can get you down." Good stuff, sooooo, check it out!

Nice to see Mr. Steely Dan being saluted on the net. After all, he's got plenty of java.

Nightfly nightfly@hops.cs.jhu.edu Tue Apr 2 16:33:12 PST 1996

1. To Kid Charlemagne: I hate to have anything in common with Donny Osmond, but, quite obviosuly, I agree with his statement. 2. To Jive Miguel: thanks for the plug 3. To Bobby West: I nearly has a massive heart attack from laughing after I read the "he's to plenty of java" post. I am sure everybody here would appreciate more posts if they possess the biting wit you have displayed.

you know my reputation for playing a good clean game, Nightfly (aka Andrew)

Say DanClan, that #steely IRC chat room just sitting over at the pathfinder site, empty as a day without The Dan. We gonna decide on a weekly Mah Jong session, or what? A weeknight probably best, right? And some time in the evening when hands across the continent can conveniently link up in that secret handshake, both coasts. How about 7PM PST, that's 10PM out east? Days? Other suggestions? Can We Talk?

Mock Turtle Wonderland Tue Apr 2 18:14:15 PST 1996

I cannot agree with "The Gaucho Amigo" on his interpretation of TWM. To me the piece is about the miopic and misguided nature of US foreign policy. Johnny is a GI with very little knowledge of world affairs which, after being deployed, suddenly starts to realize that all he's been lead to believe starts to fall apart. As he gets rid of his prejudices (...throw down your disguise..) and begins to understand an alien culture (...see behind those bright eyes...) he feels unconfortable with the this new and pragmatic view of life and tries to escape ( ... I believed that I was dreaming.....) only to be painfully reminded of the crude reality ( ... till the neighbours came out screaming..). This ends with poor Johnny crying off his pathetic existance.

I'M PISSED. I've been maintaining this site since August. Editing the guesbook is about a 15 step process. Not once have I trashed or deleted anyones post. UNTIL NOW GODDAMNIT.

Anyone who posted to this site from Apr 3rd to now is S.O.L. What a moron... I'm sorry, sorry, sorry....!!!!

And while I'm sitting here yelling at my computer(like its the machine's fault or something) and feeling a little TESTY, I've got something I want to say...There is no such thing as "fine Colombian". Never has been, never will be!

Headache weed....

whew! I feel better now! StAl

PS. I truly am sorry. It won't happen again. Its the computer's fault...yeah, that's the ticket.....

Michael C. Packard mcpio@sat.net Sat Apr 6 16:55:44 PST 1996

Thankyou, Pat for "archiving" the bulls..t from others who don't even have the courtesy to write a proper e-mail address to corespond and, "trash" your excellent website. Maybe the lyrics should have been ". . .the fine sinsimellian"--too many syllables. I have been somewhat, if not profoundly affected by some of the music and lyrics of SD for the past twenty-five years and, agree with "Lester the Nightfly" that "Deacon Blues" can be "identified" with in certain times. One of my "top five" favorites. First time I heard SD was in 1971 from a movie and, shortly therafter, at a pool hall I heard "Do it Again" and, went out and bought the album which I still have. Josie, when I sent you the package the other day (about 4:00 a.m. at the PO), I went back out into my car and, one of the local station was playing "FM", how appropo!! I am glad you got your tickets!! Wich the Dan was going to come back to Texas but, I may make it to Tampa since I have a store there. At any rate, will go wherever I can get a good seat and, the acoustics are good. Cheers!! By the way, I still have not received a good post or e-mail from anyone wanting the SD collection of albums (vinyl) I have to trade for "Live in St. Louis" or, the "Gaucho" outtakes--If your interested, please let me know--some of the covers and liner notes are interesting. ". . .All I got to say, I'm alive and feeling fine . . ." Michael C. Packard mcpio@sat.net

It's all good StAl. We know you work ya butt off for the page. We're very appreciative. Having said that, I must now re-post to LAPCO. LAPCO, you may play just what you feel, etc., but you should read your credits a little more carefully. Pete Christlieb, not Tom Scott plays the tenor solo on F.M. Besides, Scott sounds nothing like Christlieb. (Listen to Deacon Blues with Christlieb and then Black Cow with Scott). See what I mean? ...nothin' blues and Elvis...

Nightfly nightfly@hops.cs.jhu.edu Sat Apr 6 17:17:34 PST 1996

Hey StAl, you don't have to apologize for nuttin', you're a fool to do our dirty work in the first place. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Larry Carlton? I was listening to Don't Take me Alive, but I couldn't help turning it back to the beginning to hear Larry's kick ass, superb intro, guitar riff. I think the opening to that song is one of their finest intros. Opinions, what songs does everyone kick off in a extra special way?

Hey St. Al, you erased my rather emotional defense of thoseof my kind from last night. Ah, well, life does continue. Yo NIGHTFLY, Larry Carlton resides in Springville, CA- about 75 miles north of my hometown of Bakersfield. As for your once nonsensical question, I agree 100% with your observation of Don't Take Me Alive. Few songs have begun insuch ass-kicking fashion, and Carlton really makes it happen. I saw Larry w/ Lee Ritenour last summer- still going strong. Bodhisattva and FM are two songs th

Hey StAl, thanks alot for the web site-I really appriciate it. Any major dude would and in the words of the prophet Forrest Gump; Shit Happens. Anyway, to address Mr. Jack Howard on why the Dan are not coming to St. Louis-I have no clue, but I am damn happy they are coming to Kansas City-an evening under the stars with Steely Dan, makes me cry just thinking about it. "Kansas City born and growin', you won't believe what the boys are blowin'" Mr. Steve Cox-I am needing to use your knowledge of the Dan for a moment. Was it Steve Gadd who played drums on Aja? I just recently saw a video of his on drum instruction-blew my frikin' mind. I hear he's dead now. If you could let me know my Scurvy brother I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Pioneer

PIONEER: Yes, absolutely Gadd on "Aja". Amazing drum work during Wayne Shorter's sax solo and on the fade ( to black, now we dolly back). I have not heard rumors of Gadd's demise, however. Hope it ain't so...I wait all night for calls like these...

A Pioneer ngs453s@nic.smsu.edu Sat Apr 6 22:35:26 PST 1996

Hey Steve Cox, I just talked with a friend of mine who assured me that Steve Gadd was not dead-just fades in and out too much for certain reasons I will not go in to, out of the respect for Mr. Gadd. He also told me that he read an interesting interview (Old Interview) with Donald Fagen. According to Mr. Fagen or whomever wrote the article that Steve Gadd played that instrumental in one take-barely looking at the sheet music. Heard Ruby Baby in the mall today-not on the muzak, thank god. Got alot of stares for singing out loud. Just to leave my First time Dan experience (because Im bored, a little loaded, and now in for the night) I was first introduced to the Dan by my older cousin at the age of 14. Im 23 now and as you can imagine the Dan were not a popular music choice back in high school, especially where Im from. Although I did find a few that were interested and infactuated with the Dan. After hearing the song "Fire in the Hole" I was hooked-I was buying a new Steely Dan CD every week-until there is no more left to buy. Steely Dan is as popular today as they were back in the seventies-Don and Walt's musical genius keeps me hooked. Anyway, sorry for being long winded and probably not making any sense whatsoever. I just know that Im a Danaholic. Looking foward to seeing them in KCK-taking my cousin, thought I would repay him for the great gift. Thanks to everyone on this page for sharing their thoughts, experiences, and knowledge of the Dan. Keep the Brotherhood, Pioneer

StAl,

In the 70's there was definitely some "fine Columbian", before the east coast sinse revolution. I know, California was there way ahead of us but the stuff was as fine as it got then. Now the Mex, that was some headache weed! Just wanted to say how much I appreciate this site. I love to come in every day and see what my fellow DanFans have had on their minds.

The Nightfly,

my personal favorite is the first guitar note of "Hey Nineteen"...just squeezed and bent to the perfect spot! Wonder how many takes they did to get that note so perfect? Anyway, I love it all but that's the one note for me.

This Moody Bastard,

You're so right about losing Jeff Porcaro...he was, for my money, the finest drummer around. Ever listen to Les Dudek's "Say No More"? It was almost Toto before the band formed. Ass kicking work all around. Wonder what ever happened to old Les anyway?

Everyone:

I've got all the Steely Dan LP's and CD's but haven't bought Citizen Steely Dan...is there anything on there that I'm missing? Was it remastered? Hope to see some of you at the Raleigh, NC show...gotta go stand in line this Saturday and hope for a good number on the ticket lottery.

Please take me along when you slide on down...

For Midnight Cruiser: As far as Citizen goes, I love the live version of Bodhisattva. Apparently, someone just snuck (sneaked?) a little tape player into the concert and taped it . It sounds raw but the spirit of it is... so REAL. Is that on any other cd? I don't have them all. All I had burned in a house fire a few years back.(sob!sob!) PS- You're not such a dumbass. Any DANFan who cares: After you have everything ever done by the collective Becker/Fagan deity, check out Zappa's Tinseltown Rebellion. It really rocks. Lots of elements all DANFans should love.

Question: Sex or The DAN, which would you give up first? (Hey now,Babylon Sisters, yes, you may still use your Steely Dan while you listen to Steely Dan. And you Major Dudes... whatever)

How 'bout we have a DANStock: three days filled with bands like Steely Damned, lots of CDs and maybe air bands on stage while everyone waits for he big finale: STEELY DAN LIVE, three or four hours of anything they feel like playing (it's all the greatest) finished off with fireworks and probably lightening and thunder (God's way of flicking his cigarette lighter).

Sigh. Just dreaming. G'night.

Peter Noss petern@sequent.com Mon Apr 8 09:55:57 PDT 1996

May 6th is just around the corner! That's the date SoCal tickets go on sale for Irvine Meadows (Fri - 8/9) and Hollywood Bowl (Mon - 8/12). If Danvention '96 is to occur out here - presumably at the Bowl, we would all want the best seats possible, right? Through experience, I have known the Hollywood Bowl to be one of the hardest venues to get decent seats at. Most of the choice seats go to bastards who wear expensive wrist-watches accompanying those who wear entirely TOO much perfume (**See Demands re: '96 tour). I submit to the members of Steely Dan that we are the most loyal fans going and as such more than deserve to be DOWN IN FRONT - without having to pay some SLEAZOID ticket broker half my rent. I think I can speak for others as well as myself when I say we've done our part to fill your coffers and make your impending, though delayed retirement a tad more cushy. Let's see, within the past three years, I've bought tix to bunch of shows, a CD box set, a veritable shit-storm of tee-shirts and other items of interest..... So how'bout it guys. Think of us when those dates go on sale....

sorry about my erroneous post earlier about the drummer in the upcoming tour. TO Steve Cox (message dated 6 April): Cool, i stand corrected. And that´s kicking butt... I listened to FM and Deacon Blues solos carefully for the first time. In addition, i reviewed (not carefully, oops) the credits given in the Citizen box, did not find a proof for any horn player on FM at all. But ofcourse, he must be the same as on Deacon Blues. I still think, in the first degree Pete and Tom sound similar, and i am not convinced of Tom as a player, so i did not care. I should have kept my mouth shut...

Your expertise gives me hope for the following: Cornelius Bumpus -to my knowledge- has a solo album out, released around 1983. Do you have any info on that?

Thanx

For those of you in the Seattle area, KMTT, a most bitchen radio staion, is planning on a bus tour to the Gorge shows. Here are the details:

A package will cost $85 per person, and it includes a seat on the deluxe bus from Seattle to the Gorge with host John Fisher, a box lunch, a reserved seat for the concert, and a commemorative laminated pass. Those who want packages for one of the two buses have to call KMTT at 206/233-8976 Tuesday at Noon. They can pay by credit card (but then it costs $90), or by check (we will hold the reservation until the check arrives). We did this last year, and the 90 packages sold out in 30 minutes!

Get 'em while they last....

Steve Cox smokin88@telalink.net Mon Apr 8 19:10:32 PDT 1996

LAPCO: I have the Decade of Steely Dan CD, and all the credits are listed there. I seem to remember a solo album by Corny, but have not heard it. Sorry. LESTER: You're right about the two different FM versions. On the original soundtrack, there is an extended coda section (sorta like a 12" remix), with Christlieb's tenor playing on the long fade instead of the bottle-neck guitar. Y'all got some good ears! ...kick off ya high heel sneakas...

Jim Bauer zntn64a@inlink.com Mon Apr 8 19:39:25 PDT 1996

I was at the '93 show in St. Louis and despite what M D Kelly says, Steely Dan was welcomed enthusiastically. That they've chosen to play in Chicago again eliminates the "hard feelings" theory; I was there for the '94 show and everytime Walter Becker did a song from 11TOW the place emptied. My friend, who lives there, even commented "this is embarrassing."

M D Kelly mdkelly@falcon.cc.ukans.edu Mon Apr 8 21:59:39 PDT 1996

To Jim B.: compared to the '93 Chicago response the St. Louis crowd seemed like a midwestern "didn't get it"... and your friend was right, Chicago '94 had some embarrassing moments... I chalked it all up to a generation that grew up without SD on the charts... the Dallas '94 crowd seemed better... or was it my seat?

To A Pioneer: I can't find anybody who even knows there is a show in KC... I've called the FOX, Ticketmaster, and several friends that know people at Sandstone... nothing, nada, zilch... have you even heard or read any official press release?

By the way my first SD experience was when Can't Buy a Thrill was released... I was in my third year of guitar lessons... Reelin' changed my life forever... now I'm pushing 40 and I can't live without being in a band that covers, correction, tries to cover a SD tune...

A PIONEER, Ask me! Ask me! Roaring of the lamb seems to be a collection of 17 pre-Steely Dan Becker/Fagen demo cuts. It's like they made these themselves at home. In the 60s, I think. It's pretty cool! It's kinda got that import look, without the import price. I got it at Blockbuster Music for a whopping $9.99 Yes, it's worth it for me- this is Dan history and it's special. Have fun getting your tickets! I have a feeling you'll do OK. Mela

To Midnight Cruiser, I'll be thinking "good seat" thoughts for you on Sat! Mela

R. Chandler rchand1031@aol.com Wed Apr 10 04:16:32 PDT 1996

The '93 Dan show was better than the "94--The rhythm section grooved better. Peter Erskine plays with a relaxed looseness and swing because of his previous jazz experience. Dennis Chambers bashes like a rock player--too much time with George Clintons' Funkadelic. I thought Donald and Walter preferred the loose behind the beat feel. Maybe they owed him money--how else would have got the gig? And Drew Zzing plays circles around George Wadenius.

D. Krouse kroused@ssi.msmail.hsd.utc.com Wed Apr 10 06:24:06 PDT 1996

Steely Dan is in fact everywhere. Did anyone else catch Mondays Chicago Hope - during the operating scene they were playing Dr. Wu - pretty loud too. Well if you've gotta go ... The Roy Roger's around here all have a standard background music that has several Dan cuts - makes the Trigger burgers almost taste good. Hartford show just arond the corner. Does anybody know where in the hell Holmdel, NJ is and how in the heck do you buy tickets to the Garden State Arts Center.

Hello one and all! Here's some danVention news updates. Due to the August 12th Hollywood Bowl concert, I hope to hold the danVention that weekend, and have our festivities culminate at the concert. A real major dude who goes by QGB offered his assistance in getting possible danVention seating at the Hollywood Bowl. He also suggested that he could mobilize over 300 danFans should we hold the 'vention in Florida. However, I respect the vote taken earlier this year and plan to have the danVention in August at the already specified date. I need people like Peter Noss who live in the L.A. area and can offer advice and assistance in putting this thing together. Can everyone else help me do some serious advertising for this? Just tell your friends, post things here and there, and don't hesitate to give out my e-mail address (tahia@minerva.cis.yale.edu). Let's make danStock '96 take off! To Midnight Cruiser and M.D. Kelly, aka The doc: Yes I am aware of some Dan video feed. It is from the VH1 Special-"Steely Dan, Alive in America". It was a half hour mini documentary featuring our boys and clips and songs from last years tour. It also dabbles a little in to the history of the Dan told by the Dan-It's frickin' great. I am a proud owner of this tape however I have no way to make copies yet-unless I can be persuaded by a good trade from one of you scurvy brothers. I will let EVERYONE know when I can have some copies ready to roll.

To Mela: Thanks for the info, I got your mail, I will write you soon to let you know, thanks again.

To All of those citizens new here: Welcome, "be part of the brotherhood".

To Everyone Else: Keep the brotherhood.

Well, fellow DanHeads, I wish I could make the Danvention in August so's i could see all you little, purty ones, but I think I'll probably be on the road myself. That's the one drawback about playing music professionally; I can't plan SHIT! No doubt, as soon as i book plane tickets, concert tickets, and hotels, I'll get a major tour from Nashville (where I live). YOU ZOMBIES! I'm envious that you can make plans to meet and party your asses off without me (boohoo). Who knows, maybe I'll run in to you scurvy brothers and sisters on the road and you can come hear ME play. It ain't the Dan, but at least you'll know the keyboard player knows every note of Babylon Sisters!...it's cheap but it's not free...

JoeJoe Mt. Belzoni Thu Apr 11 02:36:02 PDT 1996

Been a while since I've posted...Lester the Nightfly: I agree with your thoughts on "Kid C" guitar solo; but on "Scam," "Don't take me Alive" kicks mucho ass also. Also never mentioned is the solo on Kings... imagine the exultant chromaticism! And Becker definitely gets tasty on Black Friday. By the way, anyone listen to a band called Sonia Dada? On their album "A Day at the Beach," there is a sample at the end of the tune "Screaming John" and I would bet my last piaster that it is Fagen singing-- maybe an old outtake? Speaking of sounds similar to the Dan, anytime I hear that old late seventies tune "Love Will Find a Way" by Pablo Cruise, I feel like they are totally ripping off the SD/Fagen Fender Rhodes sound. Anyone agree?

Josie: I really like your "Felony is..." idea. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a B/F double entendre... G'night, my scurvy brothers...

Josie you probably know by now Thu Apr 11 07:36:11 PDT 1996

Thanks JoeJoe...

I had forgotten to mention a few little danStories that were on my mind.

danTale #1: My 11 year-old cousin Loves the Dan (she has a, like, major crush on Walter, too.). We've gotten into some ripping fights over who's more handsome, etc. Anyway, for Christmas she received a Sheryl Crow CD (I know, her tastes aren't flawless yet), and upon listening to some songs found a Steely Dan mention! Sure enough, I looked in the liner notes and they read: "Steely Dan, rather be a hammer than a nail." ???

danTale #2: Today at work I was maintaining the transgenic fruit fly stock (tedious, tedious) when I stopped abruptly to hear the sounds of "deacon blues!" The crux of the story is that the chanteuse was me! I tell ya, the things that pass for knowledge...

Black Friday...August 9th!

.Josie.

A Pioneer,

I've got a digital satellite feed and two hi-fi stereo VCR's...I'll keep an eye on VH1, surely they'll run the show again with the tour coming up. If you do come across a way to make high quality copies of the tape you have I'd be happy to reimburse you for any expenses. I'd also like to get a copy of the Letterman performance but this may be more difficult.

JoeJoe,

I thought you were asking who did the solo on "Kings" but after I read the liner notes on Can't Buy A Thrill, I see you already know it was Elliot Randall. I went back and listened to the Pablo Cruise tune, can't say I really see the connection but they paled next to the music of the Dan anyway.

MD Kelley,

If you have a good quality (audio & video) copy of the Letterman performance I'll be happy to reimburse you for a good quality dub of the tape. Just let me know what you need.

Everyone: Still looking for any other video of the Dan...if you have it or know of it pleast share!!! I will be happy to reimburse you for any costs.

a dish of dollars layed out for all to see...

To A Pioneer: Talk to your friend at Sandstone again... I've heard of some leakage at mgmt. level... not on the bandwagon yet... I'll confirm if I'm through the door early!!!

To Midnight Cruiser: I've been procrastinating that second VCR purchase, I may now have a compelling reason to start shopping... will get back with you relatively soon. My copy was recorded on 5+ year old Panasonic HI-FI stereo... you'll have to use your own judgment as to the quality.

I've had all of those articles for years. They were all reprinted in Metal Leg. I don't know where all of you people came from, if you were the true Danfandom, you would have been subscribers to the now defunct fanzine for the last 10 years! The answers to about 95% of everyone's questions are answered in the 20-some-odd issues. Check out the back issues being put up on the SD Home Page.

I did however hear that they are expecting a sellout before the day is up. If you wan't my opinion I expect a sell out before 2 hours are up. Anyway you look at it-it don't look good. What sucks for me is I now have to call ticketbastard and try to reserve some because I won't be back up to K.C. this weekend. Im holding my breath. Don't want to kill too much space with ALL of the details but here is some ticket buying details:

Henry Chapman reports that one should call (215) 336-2000 at TicketMaster on April 13 for the Camden Shows; Susan Davidson reports that Washington State tickets go on sale at 9 AM PDT April 13 so call TicketBastard at 206-627-TIXS; Tickets go on sale for Manassas VA -- no Merriwether -- on April 13 at 10 Am EDTi at TicketBastard (202) 432-SEAT, according to Todd Lawson; and I think E Troy WI *AND* Tinley Park IL will go on sale next Saturday -- instead of tomorrow for E Troy. For more details consult the Steely Fan Digest at steely-dan-request@uiuc.edu. See you at the shows.

Just got hooked on 'Your Gold Teeth' again, after all those years. Hiya Josie, Steve (Are we related? Nah.), Pioneer, and St. Alphonzo, who does a helluva job with this site, lemme tell ya (and I don't mind tellin' ya!).

By the way, for Nightfly, who was wondering about the whereabouts of Larry Carlton, he's still kicking, because he did an album last year with Lee Ritenour. So-so. But you really gotta get a Carlton disc titled 'Live at the Blue Note'. Really hot!

This Thursday, April 18th, drummer Bernard "pretty" Purdie will be playing at Le Bar Bat on West 57th St. in New York City. Picked up a couple CDs at Best Buy that appear to be imports. Unfortunately, they did not come with any lyrics in the liner. One is:

German - 3 cuts

1) Trans-Island Skyway (same as Kamakiriad?) 2) Big Noise, New York 3) Home at Last (live, recorded at Beacon)

The other is:

British - 3 cut CD w/new jewel box w/space for 2 CDs

1) Tomorrow's Girls (same as Kamakiriad?) 2) Confide In Me 3) Shanghai Confidential

Pardon if this is rehash, but I just found this chat. Anyone have lyrics for these, or any background?

Is there *anyone* out there who's willing to provide a copy for ridiculously extravagant remuneration? Not someone who has a tape but won't copy; not someone who has a tape but might copy at some indeterminant point in the future; but someone who has a tape and *will* actually pull the durn thing? I liked steely dan most of my life. When the New york rock and soul review played at Poplar Creek in Chicago back in 1992 I was in hog heaven. Reminds me when I was in High School in the early 70's I wanted to go see the Kinks in Chicago not because of being to much of a fan of the Kinks but to see Steely Dan. At that time my parents would not let me go because of all the pot smoking going on at concerts at that time. Well it took 20 some years but I finally made it to Steely dan concert. Will be at World Music Theater August 2nd. can't wait til tickets go on sale next week.

First and foremost HI to: M.D. "Doc" Kelly, Rex Cox, Mela (YOUR NEW NAME IS PEARL), Big Man StAl, Josie, and the one and only Steve Cox. My scurvy brothers and sisters.

Secondly: O.K. Maybe TicketBastard isn't that bad-mainly because I got my tickets today with little to no problem-surprisingly. Sure It took me about 45 minutes to finally reach the "bastard" just to be put on hold and then wait another 20 minutes on hold. Thats O.K. -Because I GOT MY TICKETS-I have just dropped a load in my pants. Anyway got some prime seats and Im very excited hell I was so happy that I went ahead and bought a $21.00 Steely Dan T-shirt from them, what the hell, why not!-Hey Doc I hope you got taken care of my brother. Lookin forward to seeing you there. A little insider to eveveryone else calling for your tickets-call early and get ready to wear out that speed dial-I swear I hit that thing over 800 times. Got luck brothers and sisters-may you find your way to the Dan, one way or the other.

Finally: My brother "Doc" I feel your pain about the TicketBastard world wide ticket rush. I called KCMO ticketbastard and found out that I was talking with someone from California-she was a total idiot and kept refering to the Dan as Mr. Steely Dan-thinking that this is just one guy. Quote Ticket Lady "Boy sure are a lot of people calling to go see this Mr. Dan fellow-what does he sing"-well I didn't have the balls to tell her where the name came from-didn't want her to hang up on me. Back to the problem-I found out that I'm competing for a slot on the phone line for people trying to get Styx and Jimmy Buffet tickets-this sucks. This "grand central station" crap has got to go. I would make it a lot easier for everyone. I don't mean to get on a rant here but.....

Keep the brotherhood, Pioneer

N. Hager lehager@southwind.net Sun Apr 14 03:36:38 PDT 1996

I hope everyone will appreciate another "How I Got MY Tickets" story. This one has a VERY happy ending.

I live about 150 miles from the K.C. venue, Sandstone. I called Sandstone to see if there were any local outlets where I could purchase tickets. My instincts told me that I would be hitting the redial button for at least an hour, and every minute that went by would lessen the chances for obtaining decent seats. And yes, their was a local outlet!

Well, Saturday morning at 8:30 found me at my local Blockbuster Music Store. I was the ONLY one there to purchase tickets. At 8:55, the very accomodating gentleman who manages that store warmed up the computer and started plugging in my request. By 9:05, I had the tickets in hand, row G, 7 rows back. Even he was surprised that I obtained such great seats.

The moral of the story for those who haven't purchased their tickets yet is to DO YOUR HOMEWORK. It might be well worth your time and trouble to find that out-of-the-way place where you, too, can have your tickets in hand by 9:05 a.m.

Michael Kassel rtw@tir.com Sun Apr 14 07:59:39 PDT 1996

Just got my tickets for Steely dan yesterday, and have been looking forward to it. I hope they do "Reeling in the Years" The way they did it in '94. To me that took a lot of courage to change the song around, and, at first I was a little shocked, but, listening to it on Alive in America it has come to me to represent the song (I wonder how many of you agree). I also hope to hear a few more of Walter's cuts off "Tracks of Whack," like "Junkie Girl," which is great. By the way, I'm hoping I'm not being a jerk by mentioning it here, but I run a virtual magazine called "ready.to.ware" over at http://www.tir.com/~rtw/rtw.htm, which has a review section in it where we gave this site one of the highest ratings! The Steely Dan Page is as great as I would expect from such a singular group that has given me quite a bit of enjoyment -- not to mention things to think about -- since my high school days. Look forward to tour '96!

Hi DanFreaks...This ain't quite Dan related, but Wednesday the 17th here in Nashville, Michael McDonald will make an appearance at a club along with Felix Cavaliere (remember the Rascals?), and Christopher Cross. I'll be there. Maybe I'll get a chance to quiz MM on some Dan stuff, and find out how Felix got that great Hammond Organ sound. BTW, REX COX: Wendy Waldman lives here in Nashville, so does Felix Cavaliere. Waldman is one of the few women producers down here (due to an old-boy network). Sure wish I could see all you scurvy bros. and sisters at a Dan concert, but I'll be busy as a one armed paper hanger this summer....act natch'l, like you don't care.

Can't wait till tickets go on sell. Here in Cincinnati they have a crappy package deal where you buy a series of concerts.Unfortunately the Dan is part of a series with Jimmy Buffet (and Buffet is big around) here so when the individual tickets for the Dan show go on sale it will be difficult to get any decent seats.I hate this system because most people will pay the $160 for the series just for the Buffet show. But I'll do whatever it takes to get to the show, rob a bank, steal a car.Mela ,some other suggestions:Lasdy Bayside,Cathy Berberian,Louise(from pearl of the quarter),Rose Darling,Snake Mary,Lucy,Angel,Broadway Duchess,Maxine,Ida Lee,Gretchen,Jackie,Connie Lee.

Dear St.Alphonzo, This is what I believe happened this weekend. You can correct me if I am wrong: You started to edit the page but were interrupted by a beautiful woman and her drop-dead gorgeous friend. The 3 of you drank and played all night, hopped a plane for the Caymans, joined a wild party down there where you drank Zombies from the coco shells and danced with everyone on the island. Regretfully, they put you on a plane and sent you home, where you finished the edit job and tumbled into bed for a NAP. (You might still be sleeping it off). STAL, you didn't have to blame your ISP! I just picked up some crappy CD's today at Best Buy-actually they are pretty good-Im sure are boys probably know about them but are not happy about it. They are in a three part series of old Dan stuff and outtakes from Royal Scam, Katy Lied, and P. L.. The Three parts are called (1) Old Regime, (2) Stone Piano, and (3) Sun Mountain. Like I said they are alright. Alot of it is just Don and Walt acoustic by the piano. There are like three versions of Caves of Altimira-kind of like a progression into the final thing-It's pretty cool. Well I just wanted to share that with you.

Mela: I see you changed your name-what you didn't like my Smack Daddy suggestion?

Josie: Could you possibly email me with more info on the DANVENTION. Thank's

Hey I guess I should give you guys more info about these 3 disc so you can possibly attain them. They are released under a label of Thunderbolt by some dude named Nigel Molden. If you see these you will immediately laugh at these. They have like nature scenes on they cover-parents and children-all that kind of crap-it's pretty disgusting. Here are some item No.'s for ya. Old Regime-CDTB 040 Stone Piano-CDTB 054 Sun Mountain-CDTB 139 If some of my special brothers cannot find these anywhere I can make some copies. But I think you can probably find most of this stuff on other rip off records. The sun mountain one is about the best one-I'll give you a run down of the songs. {You go where I go, A little with Sugar, Roaring of the Lamb, Charlie Freak, Sun Mountain, Oh wow its you, Undecided (Altmira session I), any major dude, caves of Altmira II, any worlkd that im welcome to, more to come, parkers band, barrytown, brain tap shuffle, brooklyn, mock turtle song, yellow peril.} This is the one to get. It has the more recent stuff-if thats possible to say. The songs we are all familiar with are actually like rehersals or rough versions of the actual songs. I suggest trying to attain these if you cant find other old Steely Dan recordings-its the best I've seen.

A Pioneer: Some of their old stuff is really great. I especially love "Old Regime," "Brain Tap Shuffle," "Mock Turtle Song," "Soul Ram" "Undecided." The best collection of their old stuff I've seen is on a two CD set called "Steely Dan Catalyst." It has all you've mentioned and more Plus, it has some cool liner notes, and the names of all the artists involved in the recordings, what they did, and (I think) the date.

Here's a tip when dealing with the TicketBastard: If you have to SPELL the name Steely Dan to the guy on the other end, call back and ask for a manager to take your order. I didn't, and I received tickets for different show, a different date, a different theater, city and state!!! Now I have to mail THEIR mistake to some place in Minneapolis, and pray that they send me the right tickets! Good Luck to you all!

To Gaucho Amigo: Thanks for the name suggestions-they're great! I've already chosen RubyPearl but I kinda liked Snake Mary. You sure know your Dan names. I like that. Hope you get good seats in spite of that son of a son of a sailor. I'll even pray for that-I'm praying for mine!

StAl: Now you see how we depend on you. Everybody raise up your glass to Saintly Alphonso !!! I really couldn't wait to sign on again. Great job done with the Sign-On Archives too!

Josie: How about having a mail distribution list for all mails concerning the DanVention. And please don't forget to put me on your list! As I missed some of your posts I'd like to be updated. This might be true for one or all Danhard fans also. What can I do (from here in Jermanee) for the Event? Well, I lay awake at night and - prey... Anything else?

I'm looking forward to some chat some time, but: Keep up this great book here, it's got really precious info sometimes and it stays there when people log off.

Where I have heard SD lately: At the Tower of Power tour they played NOTHING BUT SD through the PA system before and after the show, which meant all of Can't Buy, all of Countdown and some of Aja. That puts you in a mood ... During the show, they only played TOP, though. Missed chance ... Guess I will see some of you at The Gorge at Aug/17 - tickets in hand!

Hi there! I´m a little bit jealous on you guys on the other side of the great waters, won´t be able to visit a concert myself. I´ll have to wait until they cross the atlantic but I mean if you don´t have something to look forward to life would be pretty dull. I wonder if anyone know something ´bout the bril-liant trombone player on "Kamakiriad" (the last song, don´t remember the name right now). Great solo, at least in my opinion. The name on the guy is Birch Johnson and I just wonder if you know of any recordings by him. I guess this aint really Dan stuff but I thought I´d ask anyway.

Took a tip from someone here and looked in the discount bin at BlockBuster Music and found a cassette called "Becker Fagen...The Origins Of Steely Dan"...the songs on it are "Brain Tap Shuffle", "Come Back Baby", "Don't Let Me In", "Old Regime", "Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me)", "Mock Turtle Song", "Soul Ram", "I Can't Function", "Yellow Peril" and "Let George Do It". The version of "Brooklyn" sounds like they were on 'ludes...definitely demo tape quality. You could do better in your home studio nowadays...Still, it was cool to hear the band in the formative stages...I read about the other 3 CD's at Best Buys...gonna go down and check it out when I'm off this weekend...wish I could have found the one I got on CD but they didn't have it and only had one copy of the cassette...at a whopping $2.99! Can't beat the price...gonna make a backup copy...I don't trust tapes, especially cheap ones! Thanks for the tips on the pre-Dan music...still looking for any video and waiting on VH1 to re-reun the "Alive In America" special...if anyone hears of it coming on please post it here as soon as possible! Can't wait for July 7th...second row center!!! I'm stoked!!!

It's great hearing about everyone's concert seats(wish I had some)but it would also be interesting to hear about what else is on the collective mind of the Danfans. I, for one, would like to see some discussion regarding music out here, especially about what other Dan fans are listening to(unless you listen to Dan 24/7). I like contemporary jazz, some fusion, some unusual stuff. Don't personally care much for most of the pop stuff, rap stuff and can't listen to "classic" rock(except, of course, when a classic Dan song is on). I've got a ton of Dan recordings: most of the cds, old vinyl, radio show broadcasts & interviews, whatever boot cds and tapes I can find. I didn't buy the boxed set, though, because I was pissed that there were no unreleased gems to be had on it. Can others tell me if there is a good reason to get this if you already have the music? Also--Has anyone else heard the strange single version of Snowbound that is pretty much the percussion tracks w/ Fagen's vocal? It is on a cd single and is very interesting.

Brain Tapped dbybee19@tcd.net Wed Apr 17 17:05:06 PDT 1996

Callahan: Obviously the Dan rules supreme. Otherwise, Zappa's "perfection and grace" really puts a smile on your face. Zappa is a lot more experimental, however, and as such I find his stuff hit and miss (no offense, Zappa fans, I love him too). By comparison, Steely Dan is not experimental -- it is different from anything else, but perfect.

I only recently heard some pretty cool stuff called "acid jazz." The stuff I heard seems to have its roots in Becker/Fagen stuff. Some is pretty cool, but we'll have another Shakespeare before we have another Steely Dan. Go to a music store where you can hear some of the acid stuff, however. Definitely worth getting some of it. Sorry I don't have any artists' names. I didn't buy yet, just listened.

just checkin in after being out of town-any of you who Emailed on regarding copy of discography on April 15 or 16 please mail again as I blew it all out by accident!Sorry!Am looking to getting around to putting complete discography out on GUESTBOOK including catalog #'s-matrix #'s will be available on request.Have had so many request it seems it only makes sense to publish for THE DANDOM ELITE out there on the GUESTBOOK-remember guys(and Josie) this is a studio band!-Ilove the shows(seen 21 so far and doing 5 to 6 on this go) but what we all really fell in love with is the STUDIO ALBUMS.You can getplenty of awesome sounding pressings(ie not MCA US reissues!)that will enhance your DANEXPERINCE exponentially, after all the DAN were studio perfectionists and while this backfired on them acouple of time(most notably Katy Lied's final mix(by the band's own reckoning)) there is also a library of INCREDIBLE sounding pressins that'll practically make you cry tears of joy as SKUNK(Baxter) or LARRY(Carlton) or Denny(Diaz) or ALAN(Holdsworth) pierce your soul with the rippin'ist most lyrical and powerful guitars in existence(after all Gary Katz and THE DONALD worked these guys to death!Well that's enough babbling for tonight-any serios DAN fan's can always call me at work at (800)444-4391 to do DANTALK-PS any one doing West Palm or Tampa SHOWS let me know and let's celebrate

Steve Cox smokin88@telalink.net Wed Apr 17 19:20:01 PDT 1996

Callahan: I've been a musician all of my adult life so I listen to different things for different reasons. Today I was checking out Horace Silver,Beethoven piano concertos No.1 and 4, Silverchair, the "Dangerous Minds" soundtrack, Bonnie Raitt's live CD, Glenn Gould playing Bach's Goldberg Variations, Winston Walls' "Boss of the B-3", some of the Stax/Volt boxed set, the Ray Charles Anthology, Fagen's Nightfly, and a funk group called Dag. Needless to say I have eclectic needs in music; I gotta have it all! The Dan appeals to the former Jazz Nazi in me. Brilliant jazz cleverly disguised as pop/rock, with thought provoking lyrics. Be careful to dismiss ANY kind of music. Remember, there is an entire generation of young people now who do not remember when ther was no such thing as Rap! My folks freaked when i brought home my first hendrix record. There's my two cents; sorry to bore ya....Won't you pour me a Cuban Breeze, Grechen?...

Richard Longman rlongman@dca.gov.au Wed Apr 17 21:33:52 PDT 1996

Do you, my American cousins, know how truly blessed you are? Naturally the studio stuff makes us all blessed, but it’s torture being stuck in some other Steely-forsaken part of the world. I wrote some of the following in ‘the lost days’ (no reflection on you StAl - my deepest thanks for this fine site)... and it still applies: While you lie there dreaming of your very own heaven - front rows and centre aisle seats ‘they got the shapely bods, they got the Steely Dan tee-shirts’ on some sultry night this Summer - think of us poor souls around the rest of the world. Come on Walter, Sydney’s gotta be closer than New Jersey.

So since the dates were released I’ve been ferreting out all I can find as substitute for the real thing and wearing out the old vinyl. Today’s fix here on the net was to find some gopher chat from way back in August 1993 when D&W started out again on the road. If you haven’t read this from earlier scurvy brothers and sisters (as a ‘limey’ can I be a scurvy brother too?) it’s at:

gopher://itchy.faa.uiuc.edu:70/1D-1%3A2999%3ASteely%20Fan - be careful sensitive souls, some of it’s a bit heretical.

Meanwhile, back here in Canberra on a bit of a vinyl hit I came across another cover of Dirty Work to add to your discographies, along with Deodato et al: Max Merritt’s 1978 MoR version (by ‘Becker & FagAn’) complete with string orchestration (arr. Bergen White) from his album ‘Keeping in Touch’ (Polydor 2383 514)... Then I read QGB’s mail and wondered if this last missing bit was what he talked about. Sure, there’s Scott Borton’s Excellent Discography but a few weeks back I downloaded the huge ‘Words & Music’part of SD internet resource (http://pages. prodigy.com/S/T/N steelydan/) which also has an excellent discography including a list of covers - try that QGB.

Finally, before you doze off (must be the round midnight in the States... what are you doing up so late?) I wrote a few weeks ago about my faves Katy Lied and Aja and almost said my least favourite was Pretzel Logic (mainly cos I’d listened to East St.Louis Toodle-oo once to often) Anyway, I listened to it again for the first time in ages and it just blew me away... Thank you all you Pretzel fans for putting me straight on a few things (still can’t face ‘ygwi, lyti, oyltb’!). There may be no SD shows in Australia (yet) but D&W have given us our own ‘chained lightning’ to listen to and it feels so gooood.

A little bit more than my two cents to bore you with...(Mr Cox your two cent's is worth the read and always good to now what's worth a listen... ever caught Art Pepper on Milcho Leviev's 'Blues for the Fisherman' (Mole Jazz) ..'swonderful!)

Richard ...with 'nothing to do but feed all the kangaroos'

Rex Cox rex@icon.net Wed Apr 17 22:44:05 PDT 1996

For Callahan: I think that probably just about anyone who is as big of a fan of SD as most of the folks who post on this page are will have some pretty ecclectic musical tastes. Mine go something like this, in no particular order: SD, Pat Metheny, Jimmie Spheeris, Albert King, Jimmie Witherspoon, Stephen Stills, Joni Mitchell, Wendy Waldman, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Karla Bonoff, Ambrosia, Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, John Lee Hooker, New Riders of the Puple Sage, Billie Holliday, Eric Clapton, Robben Ford and a lot of others. I also like classical, Gregorian Chant, and some of the more melodic poliphony from around the Renaissance that evolved from chant. And that's all I know.

Rudy stelydan@nando.net Thu Apr 18 12:29:08 PDT 1996

An illustration of (I would hope) a typical enlightened Steely Dan fan's range of musical tastes by looking at my recent Columbia House order (recently re-signed): collection of Afro-Peruvian classics, Jose Feliciano, Lenny Bruce (live at Carnegie), Tom Jones (thinking of giving THAT one back...), Songs In the Key of Life (1&2 - S.Wonder), Presidents of the USA, and the Ramones..... (Already have the Dan on CD, we've been through that)...looking to add Steve (?) Buckley to the list...

RubyPearl mittzzi@aol.com Thu Apr 18 15:11:52 PDT 1996

It's a beautiful day here at the western world! In answer to Callahan's question (which I blew off at first but I don't know why - it's a darn good question!): This is in no particular order(like the rest of my life). I like Blues Traveler, Elvis Costello, INXS, Gin Blossoms, and I hate to admit it 'cause their name is too stupid for words - The GooGoo Dolls, DuranDuran, the Pretenders some- times, Melissa Etheridge, Eagles, Sting, Dave Matthews band, Yes,and jazz(but not that "smooth jazz" they try to pass off as real jazz on my city's inane radio stations),Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. There's others... One thing must be clear - Steely Dan remains securely in my heart and soul 'cause they are miles ahead of the rest!

Until Aug.9, It's a countdown to estascy! RubyPearl

George reinhard_heller@bbn.hp.com Thu Apr 18 15:26:37 PDT 1996

Richard: Sure you'll be part of the brotherhood - this is a strictly international thing. Nice to know Dandom nets all around the world.

Callahan: Some from my list: SD, Frank Zappa, Lake, Santana, Tower of Power, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chopin, Bach, Dvorak, Steve Morse's Dixie Dregs, Jeff Lorber, Chicago (earlier stuff), just to give you some, neither complete nor in any order, though ...

BTW, how does ev'rybody like 11TracksofWhack? I needed a while on some of these, but I really really especially like hardup case (the bass and piano harmonies on that one were another case for me!),surf and/or die and lucky henry. And I think it is so great to have some more of Walters lyrics!

QGB: How about letting the guys who have discography Web sites like Scott Borton or John Granatino know if there's anything missing on their lists? Cos' that way the information would probably be available to more Danheads for a longer period of time.

Sign-off time for me, looking at the screen with my one good eye, sipping on my Valdepenas Tinto Gran Reserva. Hello and Goodnite to you!

"Hank Silvers" mooreje@msn.com Thu Apr 18 17:20:37 PDT 1996

Callahan: Thanks for asking! Not only do I get to respond, I get to see what others like (and maybe, try out someday). We all love the Dan, and otherwise are all over the place in what we listen too. Call Dandom the "big tent."

So, since you asked. . .the CD rack on the shelf above the monitor holds Steve Earle, China Crisis, 10cc, Jellyfish (*Spilt Milk* is one of the few non-Dan Desert Island Disks I own), John Hiatt, Ottmar Liebert, some Windham Hill for the extra-mellow moods, and one from a Scottish band called Love and Money, whose *Strange Kind of Love* was produced by Gary Katz, sounds terrific, and which sold maybe 6 copies in the U.S.

George: 11 Tracks of Whack is outstanding. Tops to me are every third track, starting with Down in the Bottom, but there isn't a bad one in the bunch. I couldn't imagine Surf and/or Die or Little Kawai on a SD album; I give him credit for taking some chances on his own.

And on the subject of Walter: Fair warning -- nobody around me better try the procession to the concession when Walter sings at Sony Blockbuster in Camden July 20. No disrespect allowed, sit down, shut up and listen to him. There. . .I feel better now.

"I will be there, yes I'll be there. . ."

Hey,Hey-the first thing I want to make clear is that I don't sell anything!(I only buy or trade for what I don't have!)Someone Emailed me under the belief that I was trying to hawk stuff on the NET to you guy's and that's not the idea-at all - Now as far as the other discographies I've seen they BARELY scratch the surface- I'm talking about breaking down every release on every differnt label(ie ABC/Dunhill VS ABC "Sunshine" label VS MCA(yecchh!) reissues)+ there is avast catalog of import vinyl all of which has it's own nuances both good and bad from an "sound quality" standpoint.Let's put it this way -Ihave identified and own over 200(!) DIFFERENT pressings of DAN material over a period of ten years(remember this includes 45's,LP's,Reel to Reel all both foriegn and domestic and including promo material(ie East St. Toodle OOO on ONE SIDED 7'' 45 RPM w/pic slv or say the QUAD 7'' version of Pretzel Logic w/pic slv)etc. etc. Many of these pressings incude material in stock songs that does'nt appear on the stock copies(ie check out the QUAD version of Can't Buy A Thrill LP-there are voice tracks that appear ONLY on this LP-and there are numerous other examples.ON the other hand pls refresh me on the previously reffered to discography URL's and I'll recheck them but to my recollection thiers were very cursory listings(no insult intended to anyone).-"I'm tradin in this ten cent life for another one"-SEE YA DANDUDES & DUDETTES-feel free to say hi anytime!

Midnight Cruiser jtalbott@gamewood.net Fri Apr 19 07:51:57 PDT 1996

Callahan,

I'd have to say I agree with 90 percent of Ruby Pearl's choices on music...pretty much covers what I've been listening to but I have to make my guitar favorites known too as I spend a lot of time listening to them. First and foremost is Eric Johnson. I just love that Violin Tone...and speaking of Violin Tone, I'd have to throw Allan Holdsworth in too. Saw him in a small club a couple of years ago and talked to him after the show...a really nice guy who's an incredible player...Also, Mark Knopfler with or without Dire Straits, Robbin Ford, Van Halen, Jeff Beck in the Blow by Blow/Wired era which incidently, he now hates! And last but not least, Clapton, Allman Brothers, Todd Rundgren & Pink Floyd...the list goes on and on but I'll stop here.

Please tell me that no one opens up for the Dan...I want a whole night in Dandom!!!

turn up the Eagles, the neighbor's are listening...

Rudy http://www.spec-mm.com/eric/pcafe/welcome.htm Fri Apr 19 10:54:37 PDT 1996

Senor Silvers has raised an interesting idea: it's gonna be interesting to see, now that Becker's got his album firmly established, just how many "weekend warriors" we got in the trenches. At my first two occasions seeing the Dan, it seemed like EVERYONE was heading for refreshment at about the time Walt picked up the vocals....I think this time around, the only time anyone's getting up to grab that beer is during any opening band's set.

"would not could not, would not could not, would not join the dance..."

A Pioneer ngs453s@nic.smsu.edu Fri Apr 19 11:15:43 PDT 1996

Sorry I have not posted in a while-been strung out all night. Been an interesting week. I get all excited when others ask what other dan fans might be listening to. So here is my list. In no order, excet for steelydan first. Beatles, Talking Heads, Earl Hines, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Roger Waters, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, Dave Matthews Band, Blues Traveler, Freddy Jones Band, Lyle Lovett, The Rainmakers (remember them doc?), Old Motown Stuff, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, God Street Wine, Widespread Panic, Zorro and the Blue Footballs, Black Crowes, Marvin Gaye, and Jacopierce. These are just some of my favorites out of my collection. Although Steely Dan is always in the changer and in the car-I always listen to them above the rest.

Now I see everybody ripping on my boy Walter Becker-and the eleven tracks of whack-now i admit that it took me a while to get used to his voice but 11 TOW is one of my favorite albums.

"will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance..."

In an effort to hint to people about my feeble attempt at a website, I wanna know how many places (hangouts, fern bars, etc.) SD refers to in their songs. I can start the list at (duh-see my last email post) Rudy's (Black Cow); Mister Chow's (Glamour Profession); Anthony's Bar and Grill (Gaucho)...what else?

Dave Moses ddmoses@earthlink.net Fri Apr 19 13:57:32 PDT 1996

I am a first timer and awfully glad to be here amongst the living. Here are a few things I listen to, besides jungle music, whilst driving west on Sunset. Keith Jarret (Facing You + My Song), Dorothy Donegan, Marvin Gaye, Joe Williams + Count Basie, Trane (esp. a side called "Lush Life".), Lyle Lovett, Frank Black, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.2, The Pharcyde's LABCABINCALIFORNA...many others.

I like Dan people. I, for some reason, didn't think there were many of us out here. Stupid west coast boy that I am.

Query: Is "Book of Liars" on W.B.'s latest solo effort?

adieu, moses

Dan Biggs biggs@islandnet.com Fri Apr 19 15:09:04 PDT 1996

I am 20, and it makes me proud to know that I am named after such a perfect combination of musical talent and just plain style. Anybody ever notice the long spaces between the end of the 2nd to last song and the start of the last song. I've noticed that on all of my steely albums.

RubyPearl mittzzi@aol.com Fri Apr 19 16:39:52 PDT 1996

Hey, Moses, I like Dan people, too. I always have since I've known about them. They are so damn cool! I am in loads of agreement with Midnight Cruiser: No opening bands - I want just SteelyDan, too. Unless it was the band Steve Cox plays in. Then he could be at the concert, too! To Midnight Cruiser: I like your other choices of music. It brought back warm (pre-fire)memories. I've been missing my Tod Rundgren a little. I never knew what "Turn up the Eagles" meant until you said it yesterday. Now it makes sense. Thanks!

Dear Steve Cox, I've been sad to hear that you can't make plans to be at a SteelyDan concert this summer. I am going to pray that you can. Sometimes He listens to the darnedest things I say. I see you do the same thing as me when I'm let down- act natural, like you don't care! What is a one-armed paper hanger? I forgot.

RubyPearl On the Wolverine to Annandale Fri Apr 19 16:56:16 PDT 1996

Dear Nightfly, I read your startling post about a change from Meriweather to VA. I've got my sister in Annandale looking into it. I might be there at the end of July. I'll mail you the minute I get the news. In the meantime, try to relax in your greasy chair!

Should I post twice again? NOT!

To Midnite Cruiser: made that purchase & not too satisfied with quality of dub... next attempt will include looping signal through my Yamaha receiver (it has a "video enhancer"... whatever that means)... my rack is a difficult environment to navigate... if this doesn't work then I may have to do it again and make another purchase.

Hey now!

Everyone seems to want to set up a specified chat time. Last time I checked the Steely Dan chat channel at Pathfinder was closed. I have emailed a contact there to see about reopening it, but have not received a reply. Someone posted a weeks or so that they thought they might be able to set one up through GNN. If you are out there and would like to attempt this please email me. I am thinking a specified time each week would be nice. Say -- Sunday nights @ 7:00pm PST. Any ideas?

To Ruby: HOW DID YOU GUESS?

Everyone outta hand it to George. This man is traveling from GERMANY to see the band play at The Gorge in Washington State. Now there's a fan for ya!

To anyone interested in what I listen to when I'm not listening to the Dan, check this out: Good Music!

Brain Tapped dbybee19@tcd.net Fri Apr 19 20:50:43 PDT 1996

To St. Al: You have a totally cool list of musical interests. I must say I agree with most, strongly agree with a lot of them.

To everyone: Besides The Dan, my CD holder contains The Manhatten Transfer, Yes, Mungo Jerry, KC & The Sunshine Band's Greatest, Kate Bush, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Thelonius Monk, of course Frank Zappa, America, various 50's, 60's and 70's collections, the Spinners, Earth Wind & Fire, The B-52's, The Best of Sweet, The Turtles, 10,000 Maniacs and Paul Simom.

I love 11 Tracks of Whack. After first hearing Becker on The Mock Turtle Song and Book of Liars from the Alive CD, I immediately bought 11 Tracks. I would have bought it anyway, but I didn't know it existed until discovering the Steely Dan site in cyberspace.

Steve Cox smokin88@telalink.net Fri Apr 19 21:11:09 PDT 1996

To RubyPearl: Thanks for thinking of me. if by some chance i can get to a Dan show, I'll ask all you scurvy brothers and sisters and maybe we can hook up. Y'all are the best! Some more musical food for thought: I have 36 Miles Davis records, nearly as many Herbie Hancock, I like Charles Ives, love Jimmy Smith, Keith Jarrett, Joey Calderazzo, Joe Lovano, Bryan Adams, P M Dawn, John Hiatt, Mike Stern, and George Clinton. How's that for a list?! Not to brag (well maybe a little) but I also won a Grammy Award with a Motown band (Dazz Band) in 1983. Now I'm playing modern country out of Nahville....it changed, it grew, and everybody knew...

Could somebody please translate the following for a UK SD fan, please?:

"Cry a jag on me"

"Lay down your jackson"

"The Custerdome"

Brain Tapped dbybee19@tcd.net Sat Apr 20 13:45:40 PDT 1996

To Nightfly: Checked out your list (CD's I assume). My vinyl collection contained about 80 percent of them.Major good stuff. Unfortunately, it will take me years to build up that kind of collection on CDs, "and then, my friend, you die." I threw most of my vinyl away last time I moved. Wow, thousands of dollars of my past.

Steve Cox smokin88@telalink.net Sat Apr 20 14:56:58 PDT 1996

To RIPSHER: I heard walt+don say once that they have no idea what a Custerdome is, that they put that word in for it's sound and rhythmic quality. Cry a jag on me must refer to someone going on a "crying jag", yes? I have no idea what "lay down your jackson" means. Now if the line were "lay down your johnson".... turn that jungle music down...

I'm a Catholic Priest who is very very partial to classical music and not fond of popular music much at all. But I must say that some of Steely Dan's music is splendid. Particularly Teahouse on the Tracks, On The Dunes, My Rival, Maxine, and the Hoops McCann tribute album. They are very gifted.

I need some feedback here. I changed the layout of the main Steely Dan page. What do you think? Is it totally obnoxious? Is it rather bitchen? If you have an opinion, please email me.

Thanks, StAl

Oh Yes! Row 4, seats 11, 12 and 13 for the SD show Aug. 16 at the Gorge, George, Washington! If you are going to be there on the Friday night, come see me! I will be wearing the "Steely Dan T-Shirt" -- specific enough? (it's green). On the subject of "other" musical tastes, I like: David Bowie, Talking Heads, Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen(not after The River), China Crisis, Pat Metheny Group, Al Stewart, Alan Parsons Project, Frank Zappa (Freak Out is one of the greatest rock albums EVER!), Neil Young, R.E.M., Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, The Byrds, Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Franks, CCR, etc... BUT, nothing compares to Steely Dan, NOTHING! Actually, I am very sincere about the "visitations" at the Gorge concert! We will be there early, so let's meet, let's talk, and let's party! Just ask for Jive!

Hello one and all from the exotic Illinois hinterlands! In a typical display of pretzel logic I decided to buy tickets for the last show of the tour in Washington instead of my local Chi-town gig. Figured a lot of the happenin' Dan fans would be at the Gorge, so I'm making that show a part of my yearly pilgrimage to San Francisco (yeah, it's hundreds of miles out of the way, but it's the Dan, man...) Hopefully I'll also make it to the Danvention... sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to meet the other faces in the Internet Dandom.

Hi there DanFans. It's been 12 long weeks since I last surfed the NET and, as usual I come back to find that I've missed out on some big breaking news. Last time I was off-line, I missed advance notice of the Dan on Letterman. This time, I've missed the dates for tickets for the concerts. Anyway, I'm planning to get to the States this Summer, so I am hoping I can get my sweaty little palms on some tickets for the Oregon or Washington shows. I've looked up Ticket Master on the Internet and hope I can get through to them from England later this evening.

I've noticed the correspondence regarding fave records etc. A few months ago, I did an E-mail poll of random DanFans and came up with this list of records. I apologise for not getting back to all participants sooner, but I hope that you find the info of interest: DanFans' fave records: 1st Abbey Road 9 2nd The White Album 2nd Dark Side Of The Moon 5 4th Blood On The Tracks 4 4th Court And Spark 4 The following albums scored 3 votes each: Revolver, Sgt, Pepper , Giant Steps , Kind Of Blue The Wall , August And Everything After , Born To Run

Fave artists: 1st The Beatles 22 2nd Miles Davis 10 3rd Pink Floyd 9 4th John Coltrane 6 4th Joni Mitchel 6 6th Ricki Lee Jones 4 6th Dylan 4 The following scored 3 votes each: Springsteen , Counting Crows, Crowded House , Crosby Stills & Nash, David Bowie, Frank Zappa , Joe Jackson , King Crimson, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Police, Sting, Toto, Who.

If anyone can help me in my quest to secure a couple of tickets to the aforementioned shows, please drop me a line. Mike

If you live in Raleigh, N.C. check me out at this cool little hole in the wall called "O'Malleys"-call 787-2896 for sched. Thanks,Alan.

Steve Cox smokin88@telalink.net Mon Apr 22 22:22:41 PDT 1996

LESTER; You're right about the Deacon Blues opening chords, but they are much easier to play on keyboards and could be named differently on keys. The cool thing about it is that the bass voice descends chromatically while there is minimum movement in the actual chord changes. The voicing is (from bottom to top), C,B,E,G, for the C chord. B, A, D, G, for the B chord. Bb, A, D, F, for the Bb chord. A, G, C, F, for the A chord. Then the whole progression repeats in the same motion starting with a Dmaj7. After that one finishes(with B in the bass) it's Eb maj9, and E(natural) 7th#9. Then the verse starts with a G13. WHEW! Sorry to bore any non-musicians, but I love playing those changes! .... IT changed, IT grew, and everybody knew...

I should have guessed by the name, Lucky Henry.

I want you to know that I've had the same dream as you described except for a few changes. For instance, In my dream, we talked, we laughed. We played Steely Dan songs like never before, especially now that I can handle bar chords. Believe me when I tell you that I've often thought of how you were doing. However, one can only do so much to contribute to a friendship, and I'm sure you'll agree that it takes two to tango. The best thing that's happened recently is to see your name on the postings. At least I now know that you're hanging in there. I would like to get back in touch with you should you be interested. In the past year, I have developed a small set list of Dan tunes that I can play, IF I HAVE SOMEONE TO ACCOMPANY ME. That means you, Lucky Henry, lefty extrordinaire!

Please reply by Friday, with any comments.

I'll be travelling to Orlando through 5/1, leaving 4/27.

Don't e-mail me, for i've had to drink my big black cow, here at work.

Sad, sad, story, a tragedy worthy of serious binging.

Heres to the memory of Victor Feldman! - I got to see him and meet him at a solo show in Toronto in 1980. He was a very friendly fellow and an absolutely mezmerizing player. He's missed.

Peter D. Ford, III pford@lalc.k12.ca.us Fri Apr 26 00:07:11 PDT 1996

A tale of passing the memories to the next generation: every morning before going to work, I play "Live in America" so often as I brush my teeth, that my 4 yr. old son will say, "I want to hear 'the Stranger', daddy! If that keeps up, I guess he'll next want some 'chinese music'(?) Your music is as fresh today as it was 20 yrs ago; As a child of the 70's, your music is us, and I am definitely your music.

Hello St.Al and all you zombies...TGIF! Had the good fortune on Weds. to see Combustible Edison at the Cat's Cradle (Carboro, NC) - It's the opinion of this cyberzombie that most Dan fans will appreciate this music...these cats did the soundtrack to the (excellent) movie "Four Rooms"... If you had to slap a name on their music it would be "Loungecore"... They sashayed in on Weds. wearing gold lamé jumpsuits...basically it's a red-haired percussionist diva with her guys: vibes, keyboard, standing bass and a smashing guitar (The Millionaire, sorry I didn't have a smoke for you,man)...

I know this stuff should probably go on a Combustible Edison page or something, but it will only do a Scurvy Brother good to get some heavy-duty retro lounge music into their CD repertoire.

Hugs and Fishes... Rudy

Hey Kids -- it's The DAN CAM on the official SD Site! Our favorite Cultural Icons, Hard At Work, On Line. Are these boys good to us, or what?

http://pathfinder.com/steelydan/dancam.html

DH Mail c/o the Luckless Pedestrian Fri Apr 26 14:57:11 PDT 1996

Nice to see that the boys are just about the most visible musicians on the net. When I was in high school, being a Dan fan just about guaranteed instant ostracism and quizzical looks from female objects of desire (usually, right before an offer of my hormonally overloaded presence on a date was rejected). At least it spared me from having to wash memories of listening to Osmonds records away with massive amounts of alcohol (although, there were periods of high alcohol consumption for no reason whatsoever).

I'm planning on going to the July 16 concert in Cincinnati (yes, Donald's least favorite city (as well as mine), but the closest to home). I haven't heard anything recently about tickets; they're having it at Riverbend, so if any Dan fans know further details, I'd appreciate a post. Riverbend (for the uninitiated)is well reknowned as a hive of some of the most rapacious, neo-fascist money-grubbers around (they usually force you to buy overpriced 'blocks', which include tix for other concerts), so unless someone has knowledge about single tix available for the Dan show, I'd probably have to buy a block that includes a 'KC and the Sunshine Band' reunion.

Anyway, nice site, and thanks in advance for any info for the Cincy show.

What's this crap about a change in dates for the Gorge show on August 16th? I would investigate this further, tonight. However, I am on my way to see Lyle Lovett and Taj Mahal play at an invite only party. My goal is to touch Lyle's hair, and not go to jail in the process....

If someone knows the details on the change of dates, please let us know!!! I'm holding 8th row tickets for this show!!!!!

Hi Folks,

Fabuloso! Numero Uno! It only seems normal that your website should be as enjoyable and imaginative as your tunes (first time visitor)!!! I like the rug in the studio (gashgai?). Sorry I missed your tour, but maybe you could touch down in Montreal sometime. Just a quickie here. I was in Oregon in '94 on a business trip. It was my first time to the West Coast and one night after supper, we were in a restaurant in Eugene (The Eugene Electric Station . . . great grub), and as I was sitting in this seriously luxurious high-back chair sipping a tumbler of Glenlivet, "Do It Again" came through the system of this quite-funky and relaxed bar's system. O.K. O.K. so I'm not even remotely close to being from California or even the West Coast . . . but for that brief time frame, I felt like I had truly made it. I had achieved chilled-out Nirvana. The combination was just too overwhelming not to tell you. Love the music. Caught the bug when I was still crawling the rug (so tag on 10 years). Thanks, -Ernie

"Hank Silvers" mooreje@msn.com Fri Apr 26 20:52:07 PDT 1996

OK, by now I'm getting used to hearing SD music over the loudspeakers in stores, restaurants, etc. (See all those other folks with their heads cocked toward the ceiling at the mall? They've heard some lick or riff they know by heart, and are just trying to hear the rest of the song. If you've ever done that, "You might be a Dan fan." Apologies to Foxworthy, of course)

No, what I'm posting about is a display of knockoff perfumes at a drugstore down the road. You know the kind, right? "If you like *Obsession* you'll love *Hairball*" or something like that. On this display were three perfumes, and two were named *Lone Star* and *New York Nights*." I quote now from Sir Pete Fogel's FAQ on the official Dan website:

"The fire ignited on October 25, 1991 at the Lone Star Roadhouse in New York City at a Libby Titus's "New York Nights" songwriter showcase."

Coincidence? I think not. Sounds as though there's a Dan-atic in the fragrance industry. . .message received, sir or ma'am.

One more thing: Is it a done deal, the "Art Crimes Tour" name? I was going to suggest "Ironic Before Irony Was Cool."

See you at the Sprangle. . . "Hank"

"It's trying to do something you haven't done before that's hard to do, and worth having done when you're finished." -- W. Becker, Rolling Stone (5 Feb 1981)

Just stopped by the new Dancam...very thrilling, is that the Hawaii studio? I was a bit confused, wondering why Don and Walt would be showing visitors around at that time of day until I realized, hey, I'm starting to see the same images come up again and again... Oh well, at least they post SOMETHING, not just dead space...

Seventy (!) days left until I get to sit with the beautiful people and listen to the Dan

Great to see a Steely Dan sight on the net. It seems most people who are fans of classic rock know them best for their earlier hits and are ignorant of their later releases and DF's solo material which I feel are superior. C'mon, is there anything as fine as Teahouse on the Tracks from 1975 or before? Royal Scam still sounds like the quintessential Dan album to me. I think it's held up a tad bit better than Aja or Gaucho. When I hear Aja on Alive in America, it reminds of of 7th grade music class when the kids would have to sing along to records, the way the male/female voices are mixed and the way they recite the lyrics somewhat woodenly. Oh well, can't be perfect. I was afraid a live album would affect the purity of the songs, but the production was superb and I prefer listening to the live versions of a few of the songs more than the originals. But we've had two live versions of Bodhisattva since their last offering of new studio material. They should bag the tour and get back into the studio (and leave their sequencers at home). I hope they don't try to get trendy and write some crypic song about the internet or crap like that. And I hope all the cyber-socializing doesn't affect their songwriting because I hear Donald used to stay home and play piano all day and not bother with anyone when he wrote songs.

flock flock@flytown.com Sun Apr 28 06:05:37 PDT 1996

Here's to Steely Dan. Truly a case of two guys who made it by capatilizing on their strengths instead of trying to correct their weaknesses.

The Dan-cam is worth a look-see! Right now Don, Walter and some woman are sitting on the floor holding hands. Is this the way to make music these days?

And who's this green-haired kid in the background? Interference? The latest Dolby-circuit? Kwai?

BTW; it's raining and cold in the north of Sweden this sleepy sunday..

Dr Wu KeyBiscayne Sun Apr 28 09:04:12 PDT 1996

Rude as it was, Kinkysoandsos question was sort of interesting. Its no secret that some fans appreciate more than their music right? Josie can't be the only one. This has always been a big interest to me. Come on sisters, if your out there and if you lust after more than their music let's hear from you. Or brothers too, you know, or whatever. Which one? Both? Why? Is it because you disagree with people who say their funny looking, or do you just like funny looking guys? Should we all be trying to look that dorky, or is it the talent that makes up for it? We lonely guy danfans want to know.

Ben Kreusser Kreusser@umich.edu Sun Apr 28 09:39:52 PDT 1996

Hey all, ever seen the Dan on American Bandstand? 1973--they play "My Old School" and it is just classic material for Dan addicts to behold. Dick introduces them as having gotten their name from a "reference in a Wm. Burroughs novel". You know Donald and Walter told him it was a dildo reference, but Dick wouldn't mention that now, would he? Anyway, the band looks upset and bitter. Maybe because they had to lip-sync. Walter just looks DOUR. The Skunk, however, looks like he's havin a good time, sportin his groovy "flame shirt". Denny's wearin a rug... And the backup singers...whoa! They really got the hand twirls down. The Dan on AB is perhaps the most precious article of music paraphernalia I have. And I got it from the public library in San Diego! I understand SD also did "Do It Again" on AB, but I haven't been able to find it. Someday.....maybe it'll come on those VH1 reruns. I can only hope. Well, Babble on, sisters and brothers. Long live Steely D.

Per-Gunnar Eriksson pergerik@vbtn.sr.se Sun Apr 28 10:04:26 PDT 1996

Excuse me for posting twice. But it seem to take four or five minutes to get your message up on the board today. I thought it had gotten lost the first time around...

Checked the Dan-cam again and found the same pictures as one hour ago!! It is supposed to be "live"!! Are the people we see repeating themselves after a cunningly deviced series of moves in a "ballet for the voyeurs" or is it the same stills being fed into the computer again and again?

Are we being had? Discuss please!

RubyPearl A kingdom where the sky is burning Sun Apr 28 12:24:46 PDT 1996

For Dr.Wu: My sympathies if you are a lonely guy Danfan - we Danfans are somewhat destined to be lonely. My opinion. For me, the personality that comes through the music is what I connect with the most. I've always responded to guys who just say it - no dancing around issues. That's sexy. That's Steely Dan. Secondly, faces with "character" can be facinating. Donald's face has loads of that! Some women love it. Add to that, the fact that the band hasn't exactly been accessible for all these years, making them kind of mysterious. Mystery is attractive. At least to me. Are you with me, Doctor?

Later, RP

In response to the questions sailing around concerning my preferences between Don and Walt:

Those of you who have been here since the early days of the danPage will remember my initial post in late October. That's right, the one that said I think Don and Walt are the two most handsome gentlemen far and wide. Sketch your own conclusions based on this non-conclusive admission Jerome, but if your question was stated more tactfully, I would probably hint a little more as to who this lady prefers. All in good spirits...yes, I would like to be in the picture, but responsibilities here at Yale have me grounded. As far as I knew I already was the pride of the neighborhood--and not for the reasons you may infer. Dr. Wu: No, they're not funny-looking in the least. There's a chiseled sophistication in their faces, particularly M. Fagen's, and I take to it. What more could I possibly say?

Before I turn in for the evening, let me thank M. Becker (and M. Fagen?) for responding to my invitation. I was graciously surprised to have read what I perceived to be a straight-forward, honest answer. W.B...I'll write soon to brief you on my chosen attire for the evening at Greatwoods. And your evening wear for the night?

"A concept more (or less)"

I live in Los Angeles and see many famous people and never get excited. But Donald Fagen? It was a dream come true. I didn't want to bother him, but I had to get his autograph. I want up to him and asked his friend if he was Donald Fagen. Donald put his head in his chest. I asked nicely for his autograph and he gladly accepted. Then he joked if I could help him find his luggage. I told him how I enjoyed his work and I hope I didn't bother him. He gave me his autograph and I thanked him. This was aa dream come ture. This is my first post, but I wanted to share some of my Dan experiences with you. It sounds as though none of you are aware of Walter's solo show at a club in San Francisco last April. I flew up from Southern California to meet Pete Fogel, whom I'd met on the '94 tour. The show was great, to say the least. Walter played songs from 11TOW and some unreleased solo tunes. I've since moved to NYC and have been fortunate enough to see the Dan on several occassions. I attended the live radio broadcast (along with 100 lucky contest winners), and I was there for the Letterman soundcheck, as well as getting a last minute seat in the audience for the taping. I saw both Roseland shows and went to the post-show party at Le Bar Bat. However, the icing on the cake was when I went with Pete to drop off some things at their rehearsal studio and sat in on a couple of tunes. Just me and the band, doesn't get much better than that.

So thats all im going to say about that.

Had a great chat on Sun.Night! George and Kinky SoNSo are such a kick! The rest of you Charlie Freaks missed it! To George: You were my first live chat partner. You did me good, babe! To Kinky SoNSo: I have a feeling that more than your hair is kinky! HA! I've been thinking about Aug.17th... was your question purely rhetorical? (I can be slow sometimes)

Later, Ruby

We love baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and STEELY DAN!

I've been away for a while, and I read about Walt responding to Joseeeeeee"s invite. I sure would like to see it!! Could someone repost it????

Donald and Walter: Do your followers a favor and go your your secret vault of unreleased stuff and release it. We would like to hear what we have not had the opportunity to hear. Bet you have enough stuff to keep us hearing new things for years. All the best, Chris Callahan
