JW -- nice photo! Happy New Year. Blink-182 on Dick Clark followed by some shots of Culture Club and Will Smith from past years. Oh well, at least I got to see the Spirit 84 "I Got a line on You" with Skunk Baxter and a cast of 1000s. Anybody know the story behind this one?

Wishing all of the dandom and rockin' suburbs the most joyous of New Years!...I'm tasting the wind this evening and checking with mid and upper atmospheric signatures for the preface of an unusual evenr in the heart of Texas: SNOW?! Rare below Waco...uppper atmospherie is ripe and the low wil swing through tomorrow as the train picks up steam. Jackson, Birmingham, and Atlanta might be in for more than a dusting as Gulf air will be sucked in before the low. It remains to be seen whether this thing then curves north sliding by the east coast and heads for DC and NYC by the 3rd or so...We may not get much if at all, but...

Aus: You can count on me in '05 to keep my fingers on the Medline, NSF, and NOAA, my feet on the ground and reaching for Starr...

Angel: I was surfing abcam.com scoping out the latest antibodies, crused by and saw StevEs countdown and couldn't resist...LOL

Jimbo: 2001 was indeed the year of the Anti-Showbiz Kidz..whether ya like it or not. D&W, Joni, Rumsfeld, W, Afghanistan, caves and special ops, firefighters - I don't things will be the same for a long while...here's hoping for a somewhat more stable and healthy 2002 for all...and maybe, just maybe a NEXT ONE..

§: Just HOW did you do the Newsday thing? The links even worked! ...one helluva mock!

St. Al: There's no need for acid when ya have iMAX 3-D!!! We went to Galveston-Moody Gardens Pyramids with the kids. Into the Deep (Pacific) was electrifying...Think of the advantages:

1) Less than 10 bucks per
2) Never have a bad trip
3) You can watch and listen to 100s squeal with delight at the very same illusions, and reach for them, at the very same time!!
4) No compusion to purchase the Dead Discography!

(1077) Jimbo: Wow, how did you find that bit of news? Great stuff, I am so impressed. Web Drone, we might actually have some accurate information here. 2 points for Jimbo. :-)

(1079) Ducky: AMEN!

(1082) Blaise: You got it! I am glad to hear that. I sent a package to my sister and it took almost 2 weeks. I had sent it priority and yours just regular mail. Hmmmmm....
Enjoy it and again, thanks so much for all you did this year.

(1070) Floridavid: A small voice saying, me too, me too. But only if you want me to come. Hope LA gives you a good time. You deserve it. Oh and don't forget where Remo drums are located. :-)

(1073) Steveedan: Sounds like a great evening. The incredible miles I would have had to drive definitely turned me off though.

Drive safe if you are going out tonight. Happy New Year to all.

| StAlphonzo | Day: 31 |

So a couple of people have asked me about a planned trip to San Diego in April. The answer is we are most definitely planning this trip. Plane tickets, hotel reservations and rental car have already been booked/bought. The San Diego leg of the trip is part of a week long vacation with the family starting in Las Vegas and ending in San Diego. Here's how it will shake out:

Vegas -- 4/6 - 4/8
LA -- 4/8 - 4/12
San Diego -- 4/12 - 4/14

The deal is both Lovebob and Peg have been busting my ass about going to San Diego to see the Steely Damned play, and I've wanted to for a long time. In fact, I tried it once but Bob gave me some sorry-ass excuse about Rockola having some high-paying corporate gig in Chicago which took precedence. Can you BELIEVE the nerve?

Anyway, because of the family I had arrange this vacation to include more than a night in San Diego to watch a band play. My wife wasn't too excited UNTIL I included Vegas and LA (Disney California and Magic Mountain) in the mix. The beauty of this is I'm hauling my 12 year old daughter along with to act as a babysitter. Nice 'eh?

So, even though there's nothing definite planned for a Steely Damned gig in San Diego on Friday and/or Saturday night, I'm crossing my fingers. Bob stated because of the busy schedules of the various band members it's tough to schedule anything more than 4 weeks in advance (another sorry-ass excuse).

But that's OK! I have faith in lovebob. What I'm thinking here is this is a Danfest in the making. Again, wont know for sure about the Steely Damned until we get closer to that weekend. However, I'd surely love it if we could arrange for some sort of partay. I've already gotten confirmation from a friend in the Bay Area who's planning on flying down. So, W1P, Craigster, Angel, Steeve, Stranger, JayDubz the rest of your So. Cal types -- mark it on your calendar. Maybe I could convince Miz Ducky to come down? Perhaps pry mWorld out of cowville? God knows after another shitty Winter in Seattle, April in the Southern California region sounds inviting. Even LA...

Stay tuned...

| Doctor Warren Kruger | Day: 31 |

Well, NYE finds me in the same depressed condition I was in on Xmas Eve.
I reassess my year and still, even after a week, I find myself confronting failure everywhere I turn.
The therapy for Arthur Lee is going very poorly- just like when he was in prison for the last 6 years, he refuses to see me. Most of the other members of the band are dead, in prison, or some lunatic asylum.Baby Lemonade (his last back-up band) are either on the road or defunct.
The otterhound hasn't made a cent for me yet and is acting very moody lately.
I decided to go back to NY and things are very gloomy here still. I guess this is my last visit to NY for a while, and then, starting in 2002, I'll be trying to track AL down, somewhere on the left coast...
Dejectedly Yours,
Dr. Warren K.

angel - Mucho thanks for the best Christmas present I've gotten this year, bar none. Smooch. Nice, very nice. Again thanks a lot for that. It's fabulous. And I didn't even wear gloves when I opened the package. Goes to show how much trust has been established over the internet. lol ;-)

Happy New Year, all present and even those MIA. Yes, that's it... have a thought for our fallen friends on this day and pray for their safe return in the new year. Should be a big year (whatever that means).

Oh and... Happy Euro launch to our overseas GB connaissances.

| Aja...............................................being called to the GB by a mysterious force | Day: 31 |

Hello all-wasn't going to post, just getting my e-mail and directions to a party but felt drawn to share the dan-love this New Year's Eve with the best people I've never met, and a few that I have been lucky enough to share some great musical moments with.
Floridavid-condolences and prayers your way.

As soon as I saw the Steely Newsletter I felt the great buzz I had all spring and summer of 2000. Those sure were great memories D&W, but new ones would be even nicer!

Miz Ducky- a-MEN!

Have a safe and happy one!

Shut yer friggin' trap, Flamer.

Happy New Year, Dragon!

| Miz Ducky | Day: 31 |

Hokay, I was psyched enough when the SD Newsletter (re-)started up, and even more psyched that D&W felt their current studio labors were far enough along that they could officially mention them in said newsletter. And now, thanks to Jimbo, I can deduce that they've got something sufficiently solid in the can (or on the hard disk) to start with the overdubbing finesses.

Yowza. Doesn't that just make all the Steely blood start pumping through my heart like mad. Nice little silver lining with which to end the year, I'd call that.

Happy New Year and New One to you, Donald and Walter--and thanks once again for bearing with us, your wild and crazee hardcore fans. We do tend to get a little whack in various ways, but you know it's only 'cause we've all become junkies for that sound that only you guys know how to do. (Oh yeah, and because we luvs yez to death, we really do.)

Okay, maybe I should only speak for myself when I post mush like that, but I bet if I hollered for a witness I'd get at least a few amens.

| Jimbo | Day: 31 |

Hope everyone had a good Holiday. I just got a new computer for Christmas and I'm hoping to set up tonight.

In the mean time, before I continue, if you want to know what Walt and Donald have been up to:
check out this link- http://www.bearsvillestudios.com/nov01news.htm

Until September 11, 2001 was an okay year. More cultural overload
and political hipocrisy continues. But of course the fact that in one night, two angry old men came out and left Madonna, N'Stink, Britney
Spears, Eminem and the rest of Show Biz Kids in the dust is the moment
that is the greatest moment of 2001.

The hip kids who followed the Show Biz Kids were confused.

It's for them, "Who are these guys. Who do these skilled musicians think
they taking the big awards away from our favorites. Isn't selling records and being successful and famous what wins Grammies?"

To the hip kids: NO! It's about making great music and attracting level-headed people who had it up to here with the current top 40 crap as well
as the vomit provoking sounds of Kenny G., Lee Greenwood( who, thanks to Bin Laden, is more annoying than ever) Brooks and Dunn, and anything that
Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson did this year.

You win based on talent, skill, and musical independence. You don't win based on controversy record sales and how close to half-naked you have to be onstage. Nelson George, a music critic, alleged that a double standard was set because Eminem was getting the negatives (as he should) and that Steely Dan wasn't just because the lyrics were racy too. Nelson, the reason is that Don and Walt don't live like that Eminem does and has caused trouble for everyone from his mom to his ex-wife. While Eminem enjoys the media attention, Steely Dan could tell the "hip" media to kiss their asses. They won fair and square and they make no apologies for it.

Whew, better lay off on the coffee. Anywho, playing tape over and over of the Grammy audiences reaction is worth it. Seeing Jenna Elfman's reaction
of shock while Joni Mitchell applauding one of the wins was truly priceless.

When the Grammy nominations come, expect a lot of sarcastic remarks on our boys. But that's okay, come 2002, a new Cd should be out maybe late in the year, but at least they'll give the Show Biz Kids something to cry about.

Gotta Go.

A much more positive 2002 to you all. After 9/11, I think we deserve
a new beginning.

| Steveedan (???) | Day: 31 |

All of my apostriphies and quotation marks came out as question marks. I wrote this post in Word for Windows and pasted it in here from there. Only the Mr. Moore ?s were as there were supposed to be. "in-law", "Dear Old Dad", Public Service Announcement: -- , Etc.

Happy, Healthy New Year

Steveedan (No Question)

| Steveedan | Day: 31 |

Mr. Moore ? Mr. Moore ? Fdavid ? -- are you coming to California in January? I would love to link up with you and Jdubs if you are coming to Los Angeles. I am long overdue on having coffee or something with JW and would like to see if we can all get together.

My condolences on the passing of your father-in-law. I am guessing that you had a closer relationship with him than the label ?in-law? would connote. I too have a great relationship with my Mother-in-law, much closer than with my own Mother, so I understand how you must feel. I hope that the new year brings you better events than this one that is ending. Knock ?em dead tonight though. Do it for ?Dear Old Dad?.

The Steely Fan Band played Saturday night in Newport Beach at a cozy little sports bar called Hogue Barmichaels, which was fun. It was the first time that I played my new keyboard out in public and it was a great experience. It was the easiest and swiftest set-up and tear-down I ever had, and it was also the easiest keyboard to navigate through the various sounds that I have ever used. In certain songs, I use 2 different sounds (in Sign In Stranger (piano and vibes) and in Do It Again (Rhodes and organ), and it was very easy to get from one sound and back without losing a beat. Also, this keyboard has the best sounds that I have ever used, not counting real grand pianos that I have played at country clubs, hotels, and private residences, and also my 1977 Fender-Rhodes, but that thing is so heavy, it?s like moving a coffin. Also, I was able to plug in direct to the club?s PA system so I did not have to bring an amplifier. This was the most convenient gig I have ever played (not counting the 50 miles I had to drive from LA to Newport Beach, but that was OK).

Public Service Announcement ? The Doctor Wu band is playing in Santa Monica (the town made famous by the thoroughly pickled Jerome Aniton) tonight to ring in the new year at the 14 Below club. Steely Fan Band alumnus guitarist Derek S. and original Wu band guitarist and music director Nick A. will be on stage tonight with the band. Hey Los Angelinos ? come on down and hear more live Steely Dan music tonight. Why settle for Dick (Dorian Grey) Clark and 5,000 of New York?s finest on TV?

I send you all best wishes for a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year.
Take care y?all.

Well it's been a hell of a year. From Sept.11 to my Brothers Death and my vocal chord surgery it's been seemingly non-stop. We had our final bit of Bad news yesterday when my Wife's Dad passed away at 8am.
I could not have asked for a better, cooler Father-in -Law.One of those rare Guys from the WW2 generation who never, not once judged the long haired 18 yr old musician dating his daughter.
Ok, it can all stop and lighten up now. At least I still have my GB friends...I think.
Everybody please have a Safe and Happy New Year. I'm gonna Sing and Play my best tonight and 2002 is gonna be much better.

That should have read penultimate post...

I forgot to acknowledge some people.

MC: The long johns came from a small Canadian outlet called Mountain Gear, I think. Will get you more info. when I get home if you're serious in knowing.

z: thanks for info. The song doesn't ring a bell.

Some good parodies yesterday, mu and blaise.

Sorry Duncan, you had your chance. I waited a couple minutes, anyway.

| jjeff | Day: 30 |

Last post of the year for me

Angel: Cute parody(1062). Thanks:-)

Any resolutions out there? Now's the time to commit. I'd like to say I'll stop smoking, but when I have a toke I LOVE to have a smoke( or 2or3). Pack a week, not TOO bad. I will commit to buying a canoe and get some serious upper body exercise.

OK Duncan, it's your turn.

| z | Day: 30 |

jjeff- good JW story- LOVE's biggest hit was a song named "Alone Again/Or" quite a psychotic title like all the rest of their tunes. Arthur Lee was the first Afro-American psychedelic rock musician who sang, wrote songs, and claimed to play every instrument for LOVE. Their best album was "Forever Changes" back in the mid 60s.
I already posted this but it mysteriously disappeared...

| Miz Ducky | Day: 30 |

Howdy folks--

Having been stuck at home in front of the TV the past couple of days due to a little tummy trouble, I have stumbled upon a few televized Steely moments to share with y'all:

1) One of our local public television stations broadcasts a syndicated show called "CD Highway." On a segment focusing on Nashville, guess who was one of their artist interviewees? Larry Carlton, looking just a tad more grizzled but otherwise his usual sweet and chipper self. The 10-minute interview mostly focused on his recent release and his near-death experience, but at least the interviewer did invoke his time with the Dan while talking Larry through his career highlights.

2) VH-1 ran their "Behind the Music" on the Doobie Brothers--including extensive interview footage with Mike McDonald and Skunk Baxter. SD mentioned only with reference to Mike and Jeff having met there ... but as the documentary unfolded, covering how Mike and Jeff apparently locked horns a lot during their time with the Doobies, I got the distinct impression that part of the tussle seemed to stem from Mike being highly particular about musical arrangement and orchestration--heh, wonder where he got that from? :-)

3) Some random end-of-year-in-music-videos something-or-other on one of the MTVs (my memory fuzzes out on this one, due to various, erm, activities at the time). Think it was a couple of dudes from Alien Ant Farm being interviewed. The one thing my brain honed in on for sure: the Tour 2K t-shirt, with the NYC Steely subway token design, worn by one of the two dudes. (If you've seen AAF's hysterical cover of Jacko's "Smooth Criminal," you'll know these erstwhile punk-poppers can really actually play.)

I'll probably be on again between now and the 1st, but in case I'm not, happy New Year to everyone out there, and keep on jammin' along!

He's sealed up tight
He can beat the freeze

(I will leave it to you, to figure out the dancer's part.) :-)

(1059) Dano: I can't believe you are STILL partying! Happy New Year to you and your family and drive safe.

(1061) MC: I echo your thoughts. May we get the new one, sometime in the next year. Maybe a small chance of a tour this summer, if they are essentially done with the record and just marking time, until it is released. :-)

jjeff...I totally agree about the O Brother soundtrack....I probably put more miles on that CD than any other this past year....btw,where does one find silk long johns? sounds like comfortable lounging gear in cold weather!

My best wishes to each and every one of you for a safe and Happy New Year. May 2002 bring us some new Dan. I suspect it will but we'll likely have to wait until '03 for the tour.

Hello Steelyfolk,

Well it's been a hell of a year has'nt it?
Not one of the greatest as years go, but it seems
to be ending on a good note. Remember those crazy
gas prices?...a thing of the past now. Remember
how the stock market just seemed to be spiraling
downward with no end in site?...the Dow is back up
over 10,000 and heading up. Remember the devastating
shock of September 11th?...the country has recovered
from it and we're stronger and safer now, which is
more than can be said for those who perpetrated the
crime. It's one heck of a strong country we got here
ain't it? I'm kinda proud of it. It still stands and
we still stand. Thats a pretty reassuring thing to
know. I'm looking forward to a really good year in
2002. Heck, even the stock market folks on CNBC are
smilin' ! To all the Steely Dan folks wherever you
are, whatever country you're in, here's to you!
Hope that the comming year is a peaceful and
profitable one for you, and thanks for keeping the
music of Steely Dan alive.

| jjeff ...a bit richer | Day: 29 |

Duncan( I know you're there):Self-combusting trainers, eh? You really HAVE put on the weight, haven't you. And little Dan's been baptized!!! Mess his hair for me. Mess Linda's too, while you're at it. You're truly blessed.

Angel: Have you noticed when you put asterisks in the header they look like snow angels?***

Anyone from Buffalo that regularly posts? 6ft. of snow coming through your radio. Poor buggers.

z: I work with a JW who is 50+ and acts like he's got the ear of God. Two weeks ago he got caught shoplifting groceries( chinese cabbage, I heard) underneath his jacket. The employee stopped him at the exit and questioned him and he RAN!!! They caught him locked in his car in the parking lot. Yesterday, he came to the lab and said he had something to tell us. He then went on to say that he was going through a personal crisis, possibly mid-life( when he said that I had to turn around for fear of guffawing in his face) and that he was on medication and could we please bear with him. Nothing about the shoplifting. Apparantly the store is not going to lay charges because he's an outstanding member of the community and has a "sickness". Yeah, sick of getting caught.

Does the O Brother soundtrack qualify as this years release? If so, I would nominate it as the best CD I've heard for '01, not that I've heard a great deal.

| jjeff | Day: 29 |

z: Did Love have a hit? The name sounds familiar but Arthur Lee doesn't.

Was someone raving about Jessie Cook lately? I just heard a concert on DNTO and he's great!!! Very dexterous.

OOOHH!!! Got a call!!!$$$$$
Gotta go.

I can't take this anymore!
Here I am, selling deludin at one half the price to get a plane ticket out here, giving my emmisary z free deludin to post about it, using the darn otterhound as protection (all he does is lick people)to get to his apartment in one of the seediest sections of East LA, and you Steeleye Span or Steelie Dan people just keep ignoring the most impotant event of the new century!
Arthur Lee is free!
Well, I'm going to have to take gorilla action and seize this darn Guest Book!
That's right- from now on I'm renaming this darn place "Sign-in Deranged One"! In honor of you-know-who. And if saint Ralph or whoever runs this darn place doesn't like it-tough nuggies!
I'm going to bring a number of important speakers here, starting with Arthur's cellmate/bitch of 6 years, Javon Williams. After that I'm going to have a number of people who have upset Arthur in the past and force him to confront his fears- right online!
First I'll have the neighbor that AL shot the gun at, then the ex-girlfriend whose porch he set on fire, then Jac Venza who promoted the Doors over LOVE when AL got Jimmy Morrisson their contract with Elektra. Then we'll try to channel a number of people who aren't with us anymore-largely due to Arthur-the roadie who OD'd, Bryan McLean- who died of a broken heart after AL wouldn't record any of his songs and even cut his melody part out of LOVE's only hit record,"Alone Again/Or", Jimi Hendrix- who stole AL's "psychedelic" clothing style- with the granny glasses and the boots-without giving AL credit, and finally the guys in his band, whom he forced to rob roadside doughnut stands so they could all afford heroin!
Maybe we can even get those two guys from stealer dan to talk about how much Arthur influenced their songwriting and their little rock and/or roll band? After all, both Donny Faygun and Arthur sing in falsetto.
Well, that's enough for now- oh BTW
steviedan- Funkified versions of "Chanukah,Oh Chanukah" and "Christmas Celebration" and an instrumental version of the lovely rap tune "Back That Ass Up"- which was deranged by z so strangely that none of the 9th graders knew what song it was. Z told me he would've included BS in the first concert, for the 10th,11th and 12th graders, but there wasn't enough time left in the program, which was held during school hours.
However, he did say he was happy about the way BS turned out, and that's all he cared about.
Guerilla-I mean Gorilla war fighterly yours,
Dr. Warren K.

I like that New Years Eve idea, btw.

| µ - Buffalo Gals can we stay in tonight? | Day: 29 |

Drive West on Broadway to the freeze
Turn those electric mittens down
Damn, I can't even see the town
This is no one night snow
It's weather misbehavin'
Close my eyes I can still steer
Cause everything is gray
Was that Don and Walter on a sleigh?
Heard in Texas it's a sunny day

Baffling Blizzard, shake us
Baffling Blizzard, shake us
So white, piled high
Did I really want to see the Buffalo sky?

We'll shovel with the snow folk
They'll lay down the sand
Is there coffee at the Texaco or Shell?
All St. Jude's calls are held

Well, I should know by now
That's a pectoral spasm
Like a pocket defib. from Ikea
It's a Clapper without battery Cs
or a Bills game without Flutie
Now my nose is too froze to sneeze

Baffling Blizzard, shake us
Baffling Blizzard, shake us
So white, piled high
Did I really want to see the Buffalo sky?

Here comes that lake effect breeze again...
Bad news!

My friend say no don't go
hiking to that Sugar Mountain
Ain't 'nuff wood there to make a fire
the Kid need something to burn
matches, wooden bridge, pointed sticks I'll turn
If we still had Boy Scouts I would have learned

Baffling Blizzard, shake us
Baffling Blizzard, shake us
So white, piled high
Did I really want to see the Buffalo sky?

Here comes that lake effect breeze again...
Aaaachoooo!!!

| Snowßound | Day: 29 |

Abnormal temps
Weird snowbound town
Without skis attached
We're gonna trip and crash
We're gonna have sore buns
We hit the street
Width-wise, up, down
With our perma-squeeze
Cuddled up tight
We can beat the throw
And slide safe tonight
Let's tip our hats to Mayor x
That little dance and awesome smile
Aus is the one I'll be voting for
At this stage though

Chorus:
Snowbound
Real slippery today
Pick me up
When the ploughs come 'round this way
Beat up
These white tighs
We're gonna turn this 'round
Vote for Aus in '05!

We take the lube,
Two clubs. Hi Ho...
How about a dead place?
Where's my parking space?
And my Pontiac too?
Snow anew befallen Buffalo
It's a kind of para-skid
Witness humanoids
Slipping on an iron grid
Acrylic garments
And scarfs went out of style
Road work reduces loss limb plight
I've had a laugh as we stepped out
Unto the blue-white ice

Chorus

We sell our ice maps in this frozen tundra
Some lose it, tired of whole affair, amen
For several seconds, dislike Christmas day
And where's it parked again?
Oh Oh Oh
Where'd I park again?

Hi jjeff - Thank you, it was meant to be in the same vein as that line in the Ballad of The Red Baron (the one that goes: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more ...). The line is "curses, foiled again!" I had a feeling that someone was lurking, but I tried to float that 1000th post, and in the middle of it, I hit the "back" key, and lost about 1 minute in my attempt to post. It probably wouldn't have mattered any way, because, there was a lurking Mu.

"You're a lurking Mu, and you've gone too far but you know it don't matter any way. You can rely on the old Mac's software ... you can rely on the old Mac's software ..." Where was I? Oh yeah, curses, foiled again.

I still think about that story about the squirrel in the vacuum cleaner at your brother's place, and still crack up uncontrolably. If you have more stories like that one lying around, please don't keep them from us. And I'll bet that squirrel was PISSED!

To Sir Stevie of Dan - I would gladly handle any of your requests, if I am able to. You are always welcome. Thank you too.
I don't know why I am up so late, but, I guess I feel like a squirrel in a vacuum.

Good morning, people.

Steveedan: Steve, my man, yes you took the burn well. Despite the profanity, everyone could tell you meant it in the most kindest of ways. Good on ya'.

Steviedan:OOO!!! JB in orange!!! LOUD AND PROUD!!! I got silk long johns. That's an admission I only share with friends. They are surprisingly warm but I don't let anyone know I have them on. Very ballet-looking( Jesus, I got nice legs). I wore them on Boxing Day, -5c( don't make me convert you), and the only cold thing on me was my nose.
I've learned not to buy or record music for other people unless they ask for it. I was inevitably disappointed they didn't show the same enthusiasm as I did over hearing it. It takes a brave person.

Angel: Get outta that tree, right now!!! And do something with those wings, they're all full of gum. And hair!!? You look like Quay Lude on a windy day ;-)

Just thought I'd poke my head in here to see how everyone's fared over the Christmas holidays. There's definitely a positivity in the air. Can you feel it?( insert long Southern Baptist rap here)

I read some good parodies, funny rants(z),interesting spiels( JayDubs) and a terrific burn(mu). Nice to see Herm back. Dragon, read Dear Theo by Somerset Maughn, I think. Worm, sorry there's no # references but I'm doin' this off the top of my head. If anyone feels left out, sorry. I do read everything and appreciate it all.

MC: The Juniper Incident: A woman who I exchange plants with made me a centerpiece of juniper and cones, really nice. I brought it home, put it on the mantlepiece and crashed on the sofa. Next thing I know both cats have got their heads shoved so far in this thing that all you can see are their tails, and they're quivering!!! I tried getting a picture but as soon as I moved they were off, like cats do when they know they're doing something wrong. BTW, lovely house. Very cozy.

I've got the task of housing New Years dinner for my family, 17 of which have confirmed.Everyone brings something. After the meal my oldest sister has a quiz where someone picks out of hat, an event written on a piece of paper. These include things that happened to our own family in the last year as well as international events. Each person can ask a question which can be answered yes or no until the event is guessed. Try it with your own families.

Well ... Post # 1035 was a nice "exchange".

I wonder if it was tax-free?

Remember kids, the Steely Fan Band will be playing tomorrow night in Newport Beach. Refer to post # 1026 for details if you would like to come. Please note: Hogue Barmichaels is on the corner of Campus and Quail (not Campus and Bristol). It should be easy to find though. Sticky Fingers, a Rolling Stones tribute band opens for us. We headline this gig.

Happy Holidays to you and yours.

| Midnite Cruiser | Day: 28 |

Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house,
Every creature was hurting-- even the mouse.

The toys were all broken, their batteries dead;
Santa passed out, with some ice on his head.

Wrapping and ribbons just covered the floor, while
Upstairs the family continued to snore.

And I in my T-shirt, new Reeboks and jeans,
Went into the kitchen and started to clean.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the sink to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the curtains, and threw up the sash.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a little white truck, with an oversized mirror.

The driver was smiling, so lively and grand;
The patch on his jacket said "U.S. POSTMAN."

With a handful of bills, he grinned like a fox,
Then quickly he stuffed them into our mailbox.

Bill after bill, after bill, they still came.
Whistling and shouting he called them by name:

"Now Dillard's, now Broadway's, now Penny's and Sears
Here's Levitz's and Target's and Mervyn's--all here!!

To the top of your limit, every store, every mall,
Now chargeaway-chargeaway-chargeaway all!"

He whooped and he whistled as he finished his work,
He filled up the box, and then turned with a jerk.

He sprang to his truck and he drove down the road,
Driving much faster with just half a load.

Then I heard him exclaim with great holiday cheer,
"ENJOY WHAT YOU GOT ... YOU'LL BE PAYING ALL YEAR!"

Boy, it sure looks like a lot of our "regulars" are out of town, or just away from their computers for the holidays. That's probably healthy (I wouldn't know ...). I musta caught sumtum from Doc. Mu (Hep me! Hep me! I be hipmotized !!!).

Anyway, here we go ... time for more S H A M E L E S S
P L U G G I N G !!!

Tomorrow night The Steely Fan Band rides again. We will be playing at Hogue Barmichaels in Newport Beach, CA. at 9 PM.

The address is: 3950 Campus Blvd.,Newport Beach (on the corner of Bristol & Campus), phone number is 949-261-6270.
Tickets are $10.00 at the door.

Also appearing on the bill will be a tribute to The ROLLING STONES performed by STICKY FINGERS!

Come out and celebrate with us as this will be a great night of music!

It looks like our hiatus is coming to an end. The SFB have some gigs lined up in January. Don't worry, you'll be hearing about it right here ...

In the meantime, if you drink, think, ... arrive alive. OK? OK.

Laughing as he boards the plane
A plan soooooo-o blown
Allah, why you couldn't keep him home?

Phat Sneakers with a pin-out for lightin', my friend
Crouching in the aisleway, try "radical silly"
When a stewardess ripped this large chunk of booty to shreds

You intake mouthfuls of fuel

Angel- There were too many acts going on for everyone to fit in the 44minute period so I decided to can BS till the next one.
We didn't even get to the coda and the girl who was supposed to sing the chorus never showed up for rehearsal.
A riot almost broke out when the West African Dance Club got left out of the show. They got on stage anyway and had to be dragged off by security and the students in the auditorium refused to leave their seats!
Never a dull moment at an inner-city high school in NYC!
I was very happy with the way the kids played BS, the trombone player imitated DF's every inflection- I'm gonna give the kid a 100 this semester.
One of my fellow music teachers played alto sax with us for the last rehearsal and loved it. He couldn't believe it was SD.
He had seen SD back in the 1970s, (before AJA and Gaucho came out) at Westbury Music Fair (remember that place?-I used to be in the house band from 1975-76) and thought they were just a rock band back then, because that's what they were. Other than "Dr. Wu", I don't like any of that pre-Aja stuff.
Anyway, I'm sorry Newsday had to break the gag order on the Super Bowl gig, I wanted to keep it a surprise. Doctor Warren Kruger will be there to watch over his new patient, the once-great Arthur Lee of the 1960s LA band LOVE, who will be sitting in, along with Jeff Porcaro and many other late players who worked with the band.

I'm writing you to
catch you up on places I've been

You held this letter
probably got excited,

but there's nothing else inside it
didn't have a camera by my side this time
hopeing

I would see the world with both my eyes
maybe I will tell you all about it
when I'm
in the mood to lose my way with words

Today skies are painted colors of a cowboy's cliche'
And strange how clouds that look like mountains in the sky
are next to mountains anyway

Didn't have a camera by my side this time
Hoping I would see the world with both my eyes

Maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm
in the mood to lose my way
but let me say

You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes
it brought me back to life

You'll be with me next time I go outside

just no more 3x5's Guess you had to be there

Guess you had to be with me Today I finally overcame
tryin' to fit the world inside a picture frame

Maybe I will tell you all about it when I'm in the mood to
lose my way but let me say

You should have seen that sunrise with your own eyes
it brought me back to life

You'll be with me next time I go outside
no more 3x5's
just no more 3x5's

words by John Mayer from the "Room for Squares" CD (Thanks, Jimmyyyy#)

This year on New Years day I'll be sitting on the beach at Asseteague Island..watching the sunrise. Sorry for the long post, just making up for a week of no posting.

I hope everybody had a wonderous Christmas and I'm sending out shouts of Peace to all,

(1016) Blaise: Good thing I had a hint that was coming. Looks pretty real to me... But you had to pick MY old local paper to spoof? :-)

(991) Wormy: Thanks for the 12 Days of Christmas nod. I abbreviated it a bit for space limitations. Didn't want to have a major post. Of course I could have posted 12 times like someone we know. :-)

(1000) Mu: Priceless! Laughed so hard when I saw it. :-)

z/x: From several posts ago. (I don't feel like trying to find it now). After months of listening to you put this thing together YOU DID NOT PLAY BABYLON SISTERS? Talk about majorly disappointed. :-(
Oh and don't send Dr. Warren K out to my coast. Ack!

Did anyone notice the interesting line in the SD Newsletter (TM) regarding the awards evenings? Got to be Walter's touch. Public Floggings, indeed.

"a link to the "News" page
(on which you will find items
and photos from the Public Floggings of '01,
e.g. the Grammys, Hall of Fame, Berklee --
and more)"

No wonder we might not get a new album until late '02, if ever. Who would want to work so hard and then have to go to all those events, listening to people telling them how great they are. Kind of blows the "bad boy" image they try so hard to project. :-)

Minus the Newsletter, Santa did not bring me any Steely stuff this holiday, but he did give us some very old Secret Agent DVD's. We wanted to see what The Prisoner looked like when he was a Secret Agent. The shows are in Black and White, which freaked out my little one. (But mom, where is the color?)

wormy -- By drugs I meant to say pharmacuticals and they are by no means and panacea to mental illness nor is therapy but rather one or the other or a combination. But I think that someone that cuts off their ear and gives it as a gift to someone probably has a chemical imbalance that needs a little correction (or a lot).

But what the world needs more than both of these is better communication skills taught at younger and younger age. So instead of therapists we have friends and if your child doesn't seem to be socializing with the rest of the children in his/her class maybe it's because he or she doesn't seem to have anything intellectually or emotionally in common with the others and consider testing the child for another grade. If this becomes a problem later on consider reversing the process. This is one of the reasons public school system isn't working well.

Our Victorian valued society is another. But that's another subject.

I just came back from the local used record store around here and was surprised to see a CD by Rob Mounsey and the Flying Monkey Band there.
It was 18 bucks so I didn't pick it up (I bought 6 jazz LPs for 8 bucks- 2 without record covers!), but I went to the AMG and was amazed to find RM had worked for every pop act from the last 2 decades!
His horn arrangements on Gaucho sounded a little cheesey, but effective for the tunes. I liked Tom Scott's stuff better, but does anyone have any of Mounsey's Flying Monkey Band CDs or the 2 CDs he did with Steve Khan?
The AMG called his stuff New Age, but that's usually a pretty broad category. What does his stuff sound like? Is it any good?
Doctor Warren Kruger just took the first plane for the Left Coast (he left me a bunch of behaviour changing scrips for deludin) to welcome Arthur Lee back to civilian life, after serving a 6 year jail sentence
for shooting a gun up in the air at a neighbor who told him to lower his stereo. Doctor Warren Kruger has treated a number of disaffected rock stars such as Neil Young and Brian Wilson and was able to get them back on their collective feet again, but this time he's really got his work cut out for him.
Those one or two of you who followed the mid-60s Psychedelic LA rock scene might remember "Forever Changes", the album by Lee's band called LOVE. Here's some of the lyrics from this 1967 LP which Lee both wrote and sung:
"Oh the snot has caked upon my pants,
It has turned into crystal"
and
"Sitting on a hillsi-ide,
Watching all the people die.
I'd feel much better on the other
Side (or hitch a ride)"
Lee was an African-American from Memphis who did some early R&B recordings with Jimi Hendrix and wound up forming a band with Bryan McLean (a Byrds roadie)called LOVE.
The songs he and McLean wrote were very unusual, featuring Lee's British-sounding falsetto and odd-sounding chord progressions which (although not as "jazzy" as SD's)somehow made chords like F# sound natural in a song in C major.
Lee and the rest of the band refused to leave LA to tour and he even turned down the chance to appear in the Monterey Pop Festival of 1967, seemingly due to Lee's growing paranoia.
They all became junkies and Lee claimed to take LSD every day for a year and they were all too fucked up to play any instruments on the "Forever Changes" album so members of Phil Spector's "Wrecking Crew" were called in for the first 2 cuts.
They were so demoralized by this, that they picked up their little guitars, bass and drums and finished the rest of the LP themselves.
The guitarist and the drummer wound up in jail for robbing a number of little LA roadside doughnut stands and the band fell apart.
Lee tried to make a comeback several times afterwards, but only succeeded in making one decent LP in all the years that passed, and finally wound up in jail on that weapons charge.
We shall see if Doctor Warren Kruger can resurrect Arthur Lee's music career.

January 17, 2002 @ BB Kings, New York City will feature "Beatlejam" performed by Blue Floyd, Vince Welnick and The Machine. Below is the explanation for this performance:

The Inspiration

Following the terrible events of Sept. 11, I found myself unable to do much of anything productive for many days. I ate, slept and watched the unending coverage – with a combination of heartbreak for those lost in the tragedy, and for my own ‘innocence’ of a sort, also lost..

A newscaster (I forget who exactly), commented on the universality of emotions … exultation for the displays of heroism … and grief - a human experience shared by all of us – here, as Americans … & others … from around the world. I was particularly touched by that … and by something said regarding the propensity for people to turn to eating ‘comfort food’ in times of crisis. How true that was/is!

Then, I wondered, what constitutes comfort food for those of us that live, breathe & love music? The answer for me was immediate and undeniable … but I chose to call/ email many friends & colleagues for their opinions. The response from all was exactly the same: THE BEATLES! Was it a harkening back to childhood (I was 9 when the lads exploded on the world’s stage), or was it something deeper?

In actuality, it was both. Not simply because they started IT ALL – this revered rock music of hours … nor because they were brilliant AND accessible at the same time. Also, because their debut healed the other late 20th century American tragedy and loss of innocence: The assassination of John Kennedy.

Regardless of generation or specific musical genre of interest … jazz, folk, country or classical – I have never met anyone who didn’t love THE BEATLES. They are part of us … perhaps more than we know.

The Background

Though their music has been covered by Artists, both legendary & unknown ad infinitum … despite an abundance of cover bands, tribute shows & tribute recordings that go back 20 years … despite their continuation of a sort through solo recordings, posthumous compilations, outtakes and the like … an amazing musical legacy left to us to treasure for eternity … they also left us with a hole in our musical souls. We always had the notion - a collective rock & roll fantasy - of the lads reuniting … despite all logic to the contrary.

THE BEATLES performed live, between 1964 & 1966, when the technology for sound projection was so primitive, most of what was heard was the screams of ecstatic fans, drowning out the music That is truly a pity. Their later recordings were so amazingly orchestrated, they felt incapable of performing the material they were composing – choosing instead to share these beloved songs through the medium of film. Their last album, “Let It Be” was accompanied by an impromptu performance on the roof of Apple Records in London, attended by a few friends. Ironically, those compositions were perhaps best suited to actual ensemble performance … what we have come to know as ‘jamming.’

But – then they were done - to live their lives … raise families – seek their own, individual paths, musically & spiritually. Who could blame them, following so many years in the fishbowl? Can you imagine the pressure of being a BEATLE - Of having to project genius on each & every recording? We expected so much of them, & in the end they delivered the goods, for “the love you take IS equal to the love you make.”

After 9/11, I determined to apply my own humble resources to put together a series of shows, showcasing the music of THE BEATLES in the format of the genre that best represents their sense of fun, virtuosity & improvisation … what has come to be called ‘the jam band’ scene. Hence, “BEATLEJAM.”

In this cynical age of style over musical substance … Brittany & boy bands, mass marketing & mega-production … I prefer to hear great musicians jam the music of THE BEATLES. “BEATLEJAM” is about the love of THEIR music, performed by virtuoso musicians.

Musical comfort food … indeed!

Michael Gaiman, Producer/ Dec. 2001

Postscript …
Whilst composing my thoughts for this press release/presentation/background info on “BEATLEJAM,” our beloved George Harrison (my favorite Beatle), passed away following a valiant, dignified bout with cancer. Everything about George spoke dignity, class & above all – musical genius. He appeared on records by Jack Bruce & the late Harry Nilsson as “L’Angelo Mysterioso” belying both a great sense of humor & humility. One of his publishing company was called “Harrisongs,” and for George & those that love his music (especially ME!) we’ll devote a segment of “BEATLEJAM” to him.

Back from Christmas celebrations with family (although technically for us, the holidays extend into January 6th for the Three Kings festivities)...a tad exhausted with all the food, egg nog and what have you.....always good to have entire family together.

Speaking with our own Malcolm Hunter this morning...he recommended I go see David Lynch's latest effort "Mulholland Drive"...so while we chatted about the coming new year's parties/events, etc. I went to cheque out a review online about Mr. Lynch's new film....a critique piece penned by Chris Willman from Entertainment Weekly makes mention of Steely Dan: "Chris Willman of EW explains David Lynch's latest pretzel logic thriller......with apologies to Steely Dan, I would venture to say that there IS such a thing as pretzel logic......"

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays....

re: Folds. It can appear a little wimpy, upon the few first first listens with very little soloing involved, yes. Little guitars, the instrumental breaks usually being handled economically by the keys, if and when appropriate.
Me too Cruiser, I fought the law but the law won... argh
Album of the year since, you're right, it was voted in by at least three senior members and around here that makes it law, I suppose. There was little debate.

re; SD Newsletter.
Keyword: "slew".
Main Entry: slew
Function: noun
Etymology: perhaps from Irish slua ARMY, host, throng, from Old Irish slúag; akin to Lithuanian slaugyti to tend
Date: 1839
: A LARGE NUMBER

Considering Grammy sweep = bargaining power = fresh money - new record = Freedom 55, perhaps?, "slew" of songs + recording sessions
= record (usually + eventually + logically). The whole question is when.
Breaking it down in a language all will understand:
IMHO
No tour = late summer to winter solstice release (the Dan, they perform mostly in open air amphitheatres)
Tour = early to late spring release
All this on the strenght, the momentum of a few nesletters along the way, of course. God willing...
Also notice there are no year specified in order to augnemt the likelihood of the propositions hereby brought forth. After all, we've been indiscriminantly pointed out in said newsletter for falsely reporting stories or reporting false stories, whatever the case, bottom feeders of innuendo on the band we be so every precaution is taken to accurately reflect on the truth of the matter, as always. I was not surprised to see that, upon closer inspection, when broken down, that level of inaccuracy in info provided web-wise is mainly caused by these peripheral, often poorly maintained, OTHER message boards in dandom.
That Yahoo club accounts for over half of the bull, says here.... then it's that google alt page (30%), then the Blue page (if and when), even that defunct, de-funkified Amen Corner was fairly loose as well, in its heyday, etc...
Sure-fire independant accounting methods have proven this place here to be the exception, no doubt, all proportions kept. Oh... let the record show, there is very little debate.

angel -- actually my Holiday did involve a little Steely flavor. Finally "Alive in America" has been returned to my collection. It's been three and a half years since I've heard any version of "Sign In Stranger". It was so nice, it should really be bliss to hear it on headphones without the distractions of someone talking over it.

I hope tomorrow finds you all with no returns, no calls to customer service with a plea to compensate you for your inconvience, or wondering how that gift you got can come to a short but believable and convienent end, in short I hope you are happy with your gifts of the season whatever the reason you celebrate.

Sincerely,
Dragon

| Doctor Warren Kruger | Day: 25 |

Well, here it is, another Christmas and I'm still all alone in this dark, dank basement apartment with this gosh darn otterhound.
I suppose you all know about my stay at the Anitra Ford Clinic. Another try at detox and, as usual, another failure. The deludin is coursing thru my veins as I speak. Another gosh darn misunderstanding with one of the nurses, and I'm back on the street again.
Well, maybe this Christmas won't be as black as all the others have been.
News has reached me that Arthur Lee, vocalist and songwriter of the 1960s band LOVE, has just been released from jail, after serving only 6 years of his sentence for shooting a gun in the air when his neighbor told him he was playing his stereo too loud.
That was, of course, Lee's third strike (one of the others was for setting his ex-girlfriends porch on fire when he was stalking her) and, we all know what that means in California.
But it turned out one of his old tour managers had become the District Attorney for that county and he managed to get him out, time served.
So it looks like it's back in the high life for Doctor Warren K.- psychiatrist to the rock stars. A psycho like Lee is gonna need all the drugs, psychoanalysis, shock, and of course "water treatment" that a professional such as I can dispense.
So, look out world, Doctor Warren Kruger is gonna be back on top in no time!
Vengefully Yours,
Dr. Warren K.

Ferrell is so 'Old School'

Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn are in final talks to join Luke Wilson in the DreamWorks comedy "Old School," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is described as being about three men -- Wilson, Ferrell, and Vaughn -- who are fed up with life handing them lemons and decide to try to recapture the joy of their college days. Under the direction of Todd Phillips ("Road Trip"), the comedy is described as being in the same vein as "Animal House."

"Old School" is written by Phillips and Scot Armstrong, and will be produced by Phillips, Tom Pollock, and Ivan Reitman. Production begins January 7 in Los Angeles.

Morning Seasons Greetings to All.

A very hectic and strife filled year draws to a close with the dramatic (!) comeback of the Guestbook.

An underused website that was swept away by a tide of terrible September events which deserves another look:

HoHoHo! 'Tis the season of giving. Hope you were able to participate as our family did.

It's worthy to note that giving is traditionally across the board in America. Infact, the 50% with lesser incomes give a higher % of their incomes to charity than the upper 50%...

As a grateful new receiver of a DVD system, I think I might be able with my limited experience to clear up a little controversy...

The Two Against Nature DVD-A contains BOTH stereo (2-channel) and 5.1 DTS!! Now, one must program your DVD-A upon insertion of said DVD-A to match your home audio system. This can be done easily though by using your TV monitor and the up/down & back/forward buttons (of the TV setcion of you remote control) as well as possibly the audio play button (at least for me) to start a chosen selection. After the DVD-A loads, the main menu is displayed on your TV monitor.

Options include playlist surround, playlist stereo, photo gallery (worth a look), also by Steely Dan, and project credits. Scroll and select! I've noticed that for both DVD-As and DVD-Vs that are endowed with 5.1 DTS, the default setting seems to be the 5.1 (can't guarantee this is a standard though). So make sure you program your desired setting first. The stereo mode takes full advantage of the 192kHz sampling rate while the DTS 5.1 allows the surround sound at a sampling rate of 192 kHz/3 = 64 kHz, but with the surround experience. The extra dynamic range (160 dB vs. about 95 dB) and 3.36 times higher sampling rate than CDs in the DVD-A stereo mode result in a much deeper, more detailed, and warmer sound than even the best CDS (read: Two Against Nature). The Immortal has done himself proud...Also the DVD-A itself is green, as planned, instead of the orange CD color maligned in the ODP. Also, one can gaze at the liner note photos for each song on the TV monitor as one listens to each selection...

The stockings are hung...Merry Christmas to all!

Now, a fast wish to all. I hope that if gifts are being exchanged in the next, or past few days, may they have a Dan flavor to them.

Happy Anniversery to half of everyone!

Roy.Scam -- yes, indeed on the driving songs and very funny Santa letter.

Happy Belated Winter Solstice.

Merry Christmas.

z -- sorry to hear that you didn't get to play BS.

Midnite Cruiser -- Magnificent photograph of the trees.

Duncan -- so is Dan a true Dan or a Daniel?

Dano -- Deliverance is a great movie! But it did make for a bit of a weird scene for me years later when I was watching the movie Bugsy. When it came to the scene where "Bugsy" has some guy on all fours and is twisting his ear and telling him, "Squeal like a pig"! I start laughing because it reminds me of ... anyway I'm sure that the rest of the people in the theatre thought I was nuts.

Bill -- Your post of Vincent's Ear reminded me of another song about Vincent Van Gogh, this poor man definately needed some of the drugs or similiar stuff that the people on this board and/or the lurkers are taking. Vincent as sung by Don McLean. It doesn't say anywhere on my CD who wrote the song...but this is off of Don McLean's American Pie
Produced by Ed Freeman Dedicated to Buddy Holly (the album not this song)

Vincent

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul...
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand
What you tried to say, to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free:
They would not listen; they did not know how --
Perhaps they'll listen now.

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Now I understand
What you tried to say, to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free:
They would not listen; they did not know how--
Perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you
But still, your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do--
But I could've told you, Vincent:
This world was never meant
For one as beautiful as you.

Starry, Starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know
What you tried to say, to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free:
They would not listen; they're not listening still--
Perhaps they never will.

[Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) Dutch Painter]

Oh, and by the way, in case you hadn't noticed take your curser and place it on top of the Santa hat or the deer (or is it reindeer?) on the ODP for a little surprise, just a wee one.

sitting here wrapping presents for the little nieces and nephews for tomorrow....while wrapping some Barbie crap I happened to think of this e-mail I got a couple of weeks ago and thought I'd share it....scroll on by if you're not interested:

At long last, here are some NEW Barbie dolls to coincide with her and OUR aging gracefully. These are a bit more realistic.…

1. Bifocals Barbie - Comes with her own set of blended-lens fashion frames in six wild colors (half-frames too!), neck chain, and large-print editions of Vogue and Martha Stewart Living.

2. Hot Flash Barbie - Press Barbie's bellybutton and watch her face turn beet red while tiny drops of perspiration appear on her forehead. Comes with handheld fan and tiny tissues.

3. Facial Hair Barbie - As Barbie's hormone levels shift, see her whiskers grow. Available with teensy tweezers and magnifying mirror.

4. Flabby Arms Barbie - Hide Barbie's droopy triceps with these new, roomier-sleeved gowns. Good news on the tummy front, two Moo Moos with tummy-support panels are included.

5. Bunion Barbie - Years of disco dancing in stiletto heels have definitely taken their toll on Barbie's dainty arched feet. Soothe her sores with the pumice stone and plasters, then slip on soft terry mules.

6. No-More-Wrinkles Barbie - Erase those pesky crow's-feet and lip lines with a tube of Skin Sparkle-Spackle, from Barbie's own line of exclusive age-blasting cosmetics.

7. Soccer Mom Barbie - All that experience as a cheerleader is really paying off as Barbie dusts off her old high school megaphone to root for Babs and Ken Jr. Comes with minivan in robin-egg blue or white and cooler filled with doughnut holes and fruit punch.

8. Mid-life Crisis Barbie - It's time to ditch Ken. Barbie needs a change, and Alonzo (her personal trainer) is just what the doctor ordered, along with Prozac. They're hopping in her new red Miata and heading for the Napa Valley to open a B&B. Includes a real tape of "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do."

9. Divorced Barbie - Sells for $199.99. Comes with Ken's house, Ken's car, and Ken's boat.

10. Recovery Barbie - Too many parties have finally caught up with the ultimate party girl. Now she does Twelve Steps instead of dance steps. Clean and sober, she's going to meetings religiously. Comes with a little copy of The Big Book and a six-pack of Diet Coke.

11. Post-Menopausal Barbie - This Barbie wets her pants when she sneezes, forgets where she puts things, and cries a lot. She is sick and tired of Ken sitting on the couch watching the tube, clicking through the channels. Comes with Depends and Kleenex. As a bonus this year, the book "Getting In Touch with Your Inner Self" is included.

Hey Everyone,

I know I haven't posted in a very long time, (in fact, this is the first time I've posted since the new page layout, so that tells you right there). But I just wanted to jump in and yell a hearty Merry Christmas, a joyous New Year and an overall fantastic Holiday Season to All! This gb has provided me with much fun in the past. Along with much anxiety, frustration and heartbreak. To all of the old timers that remember me ~ thanks! And to all the newbies who have no clue who the hell I am ~ hope you enjoy your stay here.

| Aussie | Day: 24 |

Last night at the New York State Theatre in Lincoln Centre Babes and I did our yearly ritual (same seats every year, orchestra second row centre; same day every year, Christmas Eve Eve) and had our bottle of champagne by the fountain outside the theatre and the Christmas tree and took in George Ballanchine's The Nutcracker Ballet.

As ususal, the look on the kids faces makes it all worth it year after year; their eyes just light up like light bulbs. The performance is always magical, and for us its really become something really special that we look forward to year after year.......ended up at The River Cafe in Brooklyn to dine with a spectacular Manhattan skyline just across the Hudson River.....even with the conspicuous absence of the World Trade Centre in the bright night skyline, it's still a radiant a beautiful city....but a real sense of sadness is still pervasive in spite of every effort to be cheerful this time of year....

God bless, and kiss and hug someone you love tonight...

I just returned from seeing Dead tribute band Cubensis (two free W1P passes for the first person to correctly post the meaning of Cubensis). W1P

another nice song...

"Vincents Ear"
by Michael Franks
produced by Walter Becker

How did you ever find her?
She tried so hard to disappear
Somebody rang the bell and
handed her Vincents Ear

And no one understands
All the love inside he tried to give
No one understands
His life was hard to live
No one understands
In a past which he could not desert
No one understands
How his heart was hurt
Somehow
By someone...

People suspect a secret
But what could explain a gift so queer?
Totally unprepared for
the riddle of Vincents ear

Time can't erase the image
Handsomely wrapped for you, my dear
Imagine her suprise then,
Discovering Vincents ear.

| gorzedd | Day: 23 |

....I am now in total agreement that Bernie "Pretty" Perdie didnt join Dan until later (1976/Royal scam era).....I was wrong on that count....HOWEVER,I believe more than ever that my Aniton interpretation is accurate...The band clearly had the famed L.A. studio drummer in the pipeline and he just plain refused to play live.....All I can do is BESEECH you to listen ONE MORE TIME, because he says "BERNIE..PERDIE..Little "Pretty one" missed out... HAW!!!!!!!!!!

| gorzedd | Day: 23 |

O.K. First of all,Im not a true Dan fan, but my buddy and I have recently "rediscovered" the now legendary Aniton 7/74 intro to Bhodissatvah, which EVERYONE thinks is mere incoherent rambling BUT IT IS NOT !!!! It is a complete rail against studio drumer Bernie "pretty" Purdie (you can tell the little ole "pretty" one that he missed out ) The drummer in concert,Jim Hodder, IS "Mr. Whatever" ,who IS here tonight. Aniton naturally doesn't know HIS name because at the time Purdie was their primary drummer and the late Jim Hodder was a relative unknown. Mr. Whatever (i.e. "the magnificent one" "the one and only one") gets exaggerated praise("he gonna get down tonight " "he gonna get widdit"),as the little ole "Purdie" one is being lightly mocked for not playing live.......With each reference to all this,Hodder plays little drum riffs to indicate his agreement,as a musical"response" to Aniton......This whole interpretation is CRYSTAL clear, when Aniton says Mr. Steely Dan AND whatever (read:Hodder) There are all kind of other references too(for example,we have reason to believe Purdie lived in Watts at the time). If you have any interest in helping me explore this such as helping me contact any of the principals(Aniton,Purdie,or even Fagen/Becker) please let me know.

| z | Day: 23 |

MC- Yeah, that stuff has been known to cause heart side f/x- hope Zlft. is cool with you.
Steveedan- Who is that guitarist/arranger you were talking about? Lotta great jazz dudes out there on the left coast- Bruce Forman, Larry Koonse,Peter Sprague, not to mention all the studio dudes.
When I get back home I'll check out that TZ thing on BS. I'm hip to KE's quotes- on "Just Take a Pebble", he quotes Bach's First Invention.
Ending BS is a bitch live. I don't have Plush here, but it sounds like they end it on the Ab13th chord you mentioned with maybe an augmented 11th thrown in for effect.

| µ | Day: 23 |

Dano: It's My Life and especially the most brilliant transition album I can name Colour of Spring are catchy and errie works... Tim-Friese Greene (sp) helped to write more complete thoughts. COS works as both art and pop, before they went over the abyss into Eden. They became what Yoko wanted to be - avante-guardsman with a white canvas OR simply the effects of drugs and depression - you decide. Bartok meets Kraftwork on Qualuudes. Laughing Stock is a more jazzy and listenable bersion of Eden... and if you can explain Mark Hollis' solo album...anyway, I'm sure most Greatest Hits would include Talk Talk, It's My Life, Dum Dum Girl, Such a Shame, Happiness is Easy, I Don't Believe in You - great stuff.

| Steveedan | Day: 23 |

Hey hey hey Y'All ---

Z of X -- That was a great "grad school of music" treatise of Babylon Sisters. I actually understood almost all of it without going to the keyboard, which I still have to set up today (Sunday) as I have some practicing to do. What I wanted to tell you is that recently I met a great professional guitarist/arranger who used to study under Dick Grove (the Grove Academy). While he was studying there he used to grade the various classes arranging assignments.

One thing that he told me about the music of Steely Dan (and, really, about all music in general) is that everything (according to Dick Grove) can be expressed as a function (straight-away or via substitutions) of the universal "ii-V-I" progression. Coincidentally, he showed me how this could work in Babylon Sisters. I do not have the notes to write about it here, unfortunately.

Now, I have a few comments about your great, incisive examination of Babylon Sisters. ... In the verse, the Bbm-Cm-Dm is a modal chord movement. To my ear, by the time you get to the third "parallel" chord in a phrase, you could literally go anywhere. Either back to Bbm or to stay in Dm, or go to Eb - all places the boys go harmonically in the song. I love the aural effect of having the wide open choice - like the way they create that effect in this song. Just brilliant.

In the "Here come those Santa Ana winds again (bad news)" section with all of those Eb chords, check out the last 4 of those chords before it moves on to the Bbm to set up the 2nd Verse. It is sort of like the theme from The Twilight Zone. I have mentioned this before. The use of famous themes is a great "tongue-in-cheek" effect. Keith Emerson of ELP used to do this a lot. Doing this challenges the listener to know his stuff in order to gain more meaning out of the song. The greats can do this without being obvious and the listener can enjoy the music whether he/she gets it or not.

And how about the half-step shift with the "super-tonic" chord motion? I am refering to the Intro where it's E - F#/E, then later in the Chorus "Babylon Sisters shake it", over the words "shake it" you've got Eb - F/Eb. Then in the Outro section of the song the chord progression alternates between Eb - F/Eb and G/F - F to the song's conclusion. By the way, I like the live ending for Babylon Sisters that I lifted from the Plush DVD where the song ends on the Ab chord. I have no idea what you should call it (Howard ?!?)

The voicing is from (bottom to top note): Ab / Gb-Bb-C-F.
Is it an Ab13(9)? I think you have it as an Ab7(b5). Whatever it is, it is very cool.

This Ab chord has that same half-step relationship with the A7(b5) that is used both in the Intro and also just before the Choruses.

It seems to me that this song could be a whole study course on Modern Harmony all by itself.

I'd LOVE to hear what Clas thinks about all of this !!! (Howard ?!?)

On a different subject, one of my favorite songs for the car is Yes' rendition of America by Simon and Garfunkle. Specifically the version on the Keys To Ascension CD. Check out Steve Howe. Awesome soloing.

Alright, enough, my brain is bleeding. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season everyone.

Face....we both use Herbal Essence....we were Pantene heads for years but finally kicked our habit....all those moaning orgasm commercials that Herbal Essence has finally got the best of us.

who will post # 1000 be??? I'm taking bets.

| z | Day: 23 |

MC- I've been on imipramine (brand name deludin) for 11yrs- added a little celexa a few yrs. ago to clear out some other little "cobwebs on me brain."
Zoloft is fine for pd also- recommended by Dr. D.F. Klein and Doctor Warren Kruger, both eminent authorities on this stuff.
Well, that makes 4 of us on ADs here, not to mention WB and DF who claimed ADs enabled them to go to the Grammies in a NY radio interview. I'm not sure if they were kidding though...
Steveedan- Thanx for the tip on the keyboard book- riffs by people like Omartian, Mounsey, Victor Feldman, and DF make SD the great music it is. You're definitely right about the standard SD books- none of the piano parts are correct on a lot of stuff, including BS, which I had to figure out myself. Here's why it's such a great tune harmonically:
The mysterious sounding intro sounds that way because we have no idea what key they're in till we finally get some type of cadence in Ebm. So that would make the previous chords Gb=bIII, B=bVI, Ab=IV, E=bII A7b5=bII7-5 of IV, then finally Ebm=i. The use of the A7b5 to get to Ebm is incredible.
You expect to hear Ab and they give you Ebm. Great stuff!
Then they do the same stuff again till they sequence the Rhodes lick up a minor third to B and we get a bit of the chorus melody and harmony, but up a minor second from where it's gonna be later on. The F#/E acts as a lydian sounding bII in Ebm, and then we get the A7b5 again to get back to Ebm. Then they end the intro on the Bb7sus chord which should be the V of Ebm, but instead, just acts as a 4-3 suspension figure when it's resolved to Bbm7 as DF comes in.
The verse is in a very jazz-oriented Bbm, using the iim7 (Cm7), the IV9 (Eb9), the bIIImaj9 (DbMaj9), the bVII13(Ab13)and then ending on the bVI Maj7 (GbMaj7), before returning to Bbm, the home key. This all sounds a lot like the harmonies in "Deacon Blue" "Aja" and "Almost Gothic" especially their use of the dominant 9th chord as an almost Debussyan temporary tonal center.
The next phrase starts the same way, but then keeps going up in min7ths a major 2nd apart from each other-Bbm7,Cm7,Dm11 and a lesser composer would have stayed in the key the Dm7 belonged to but DF unpredictably goes back to Bbm7, followed by Cm7, which this time is used as the first ii-V7 progression in the song, but in the parallel major key of Bb Major which acts as kind of a release of all the tension of the other meandering harmonies (and gives me a little tingling in the brain). This is followed by a very conventional, EW&F sounding bII7b5 of the IV chord (EbMaj7), then the IV chord itself (see "That's the Way of the World"), but then they completely throw us for a loop with A7+5 which leads to a very distant new key center of Dm. We could say that DF was fucking with our heads by giving us the Dm11 in the earlier phrase, but going back to Bbm and then going back to Dm, starting with the Cm7 F9sus, which is ii-V in the bVI of Dm, BbMaj7.
The chorus then goes back to the bII lydian idea we got in the intro, but this time down a Minor 2nd, in Dm. The "So Fine So young" part uses a pretty conventional secondary dominant chain (C7,F7,BbMaj7), but then uses a real Wes Montgomery-type change (see "Unit 4", his substitute chords for the Gershwin tune "Summertime")Bbm7 to Eb9 (the bII of Dm) to get back to Dm.
The wild inversions that follow, end on a Bb7b9 or Ddim7 chord to get us prepared to go back to the key of the intro, Ebm, as we get the "Here come those Santa Ana winds again" part (with DF shivering vocally).
This is followed by a wild series of sliding downward harmonies in Ebm, using every form of Ebm derived harmony imaginable- (Ebm9,Ebm6,Ebmw/ma7,Ebm7b5, Ebm47, while the clavinet keeps playing Eb and Gb in m3rds using the reggae rhythm it keeps returning to throughout), which finally ends on the Bbm7 to take us back to the verse again.
The coda gives us a great idea that I used on the chorus in my derangement of this tune- the girls singing a blues scale lick in Dm while the chords were on that bII lydian sounding F/Eb and that bII7b5 of IV (Ab7b5)-"You got to shake it baby"etc...
I interpret the lyrics as another one of those "loser" stories (like "West of Hollywood","Peg",)where the guy has blown another relationship and now seeks the comfort of "babylon sisters", who he can live out his fantasies with.
Great song.

| Steveedan | Day: 23 |

Here's a repeated post from me (not that I could ever out-do Duncan in this department ...)

To Lisa G., Howard, Clas (yes you man), Z of X, JayDubs, and all of the other musician-types out there (who come here) ---

I was recently turned on to a great Steely Dan songbook. It is called "Just The Riffs - for Keyboard". It is only 10 Bucks. Someone has transcribed a lot of the keyboard solos and other signature parts in this book. I already can play these riffs, but I HAD TO BUY IT. I have been going through it and it is very accurate. It is not exactly accurate, but it is so close, that it's amazing. Those of you who play keyboards or sax should check this book out. It is about time that someone started to do accurate take-downs of this music and make it available to the mass public.

For those of you who want to check out this book, or other recently published Steely Dan songbooks (there are around 10 NEW BOOKS OUT THERE !!!) go to the Hal Leonard website (I think it's www.halleonard.com, or search it in Google.com - that's how I found it).

I have looked through 2 of these songbooks, and they are fairly accurate. These books will be a huge time-saver for those of you who like to "crack the code" like I do. There are also guitar books and anthologies.

These books will allow a lot more people to play the great music of Steely Dan more accurately and much more easily.

Alright. The piano lesson is over. Go out and play !!!

| Steveedan | Day: 23 |

I totally forgot that yesterday was the shortest day of the year. I had trouble getting on to the GB yesterday as well.

Steviedan - The Todd Rungren/Tubes show was a benefit for some guy who was in prison (supposedly unjustly) and I remember they started out playing Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel, and The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again. The Todd songs that they played were Burned, Cliche, Real Man, Love For the Common Man, among others. Todd was great. Alot of people were emotionally (and otherwise) peaking during his performance. The guy I went to the show with snagged the show tape off of the mixing board (bad karma for this guy !) and made me a copy of it. It was pretty good, but it did not reproduce the amazing sensation that I felt experiencing the show first hand. Not even close.

Midnight Cruiser - beautiful photos. Is your hair longer than Shirl's? (No response necessary - actually there is no reason for you to dignify this dumb remark really. Just kidding man.)

Now that I have DSL, I tried to get "Radio Dandom" up and running. I had been unsuccessful with my 56K modem, but it is working, and in the first 15 minutes of listening, I heard a song that I MUST BUY! (Well, the whole CD really). It's Michael Brecker's rendition of Pat Metheny's "Song For Bilbao", which is one of my favorite Metheny (or should I say Lyle Mays) songs. I think "Bilbao" originally appeared on the "Travels" CD. I am not aware of this song being anywhere else in the Metheny catalog of CDs. That is a hard and fun song to play. It really moves.
