hoops!--you are THE GREATEST. I am already addicted to "This is hoops!" Now I will NEVER get any work done.
Seattlites--hope no significant damage to you all. Check in so we know all's OK.
lp--nice Brubeck report; sorry I didn't get to tell you before Lent!
LB--anxiously awaiting bookstore tips. Say, I read "satyrs" too. Did you see hooves under those black shirts & jax at the Grammys?
Mr LaP--yo there.
Chips--I love it when you're verbose (ie > 3 words).
BF--great linx as usual. Fingers crossed for you to win those tix to the HOF induction, and vicarious magical dreaming!
dog--great Seussism.
Herm, KD--very well said. There is really no reasoning with them; come to think of it, there's often no reasoning with me either. Needling them seems kind of silly.
GE--Thanx for Storytellers link. Now I can get those first few minutes on tape I swore through as I fumbled with the VCR last time.
Not My Grumpy Old Man--Did you see or read Amy Tan's "Joy Luck Club"? I'm like the mother of the girl who was a chess prodigy--she used to walk down the street displaying her daughter's TIME cover picture in a plastic bag. I feel that way about acclaim for the Dan, so forgive my maternoid pride. And CLEAN UP YOUR LAWN!
dano--hilarious.

Well, I couldn't help myself--it really got me going! So...I only Lucky Henry I know...Hank Chapman in Philly! Did I mention it's 11 PM here in Chi-land but Midnight in Philly?
Geez...I'm so embarrassed...didn't mean to wake you!
P.S. Everyone. The Lucky Henry who posted today wasn't the one I woke up...oh well. Sorry...
I wonder if the show is for real...last week's radio chats would suggest otherwise as we all know.

I was wondering why I was in such a somber mood...then it hit me. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the period of reflection. I know that it's been said that the unexamined life is not worth leading, but I'm not sure I'm ready for the examination. Hey, I missed the Mardi Gras party yesterday...aren't I owed a little frolicking before I start the introspection?
Anybody think it'll matter that much if I start lent a day later than everyone else?
Dr. Mu, and everyone else who's posted about childhood/adolescent listening patterns...I grew up with my Dad listening to Glenn Miller incessantly--he's quite a collector; GM is his Dan--and hated GMO while growing up. Now, every once in awhile, I find myself putting on one of their cds, or an Andrews sisters cd. But as a kid, I listened to WABC NY AM radio, and WNBC--Imus was on back then. They played Steely Dan, along with everything under the sun, so I luckily was introduced to the Boys early. I did have a very embarrassing in retrospect Adam Ant phase in Jr High School, but hey, I was 13. Go figure. I listened to everything from Elvis Costello to the Pretenders to early Genesis...there's not a whole lot I haven't listened to at one time or another, but I can at least be proud of my Dan leanings. *Adam Ant is a period best forgotten. Don't even ask about the parachute pants and double looped belt.*
Well, I am having drinks with Aus, YGK and NMN this evening, so I guess I'll consider that my Mardi Gras celebration. The soul searching begins tomorrow.

Hey,
I wasn't apologizing for listening to or liking Elvis Costello. I was drawing the comparison of who I felt strongly about back then to who a kid of similar age felt strongly about now. Later on in my long-winded essay, I think I even said that I believed he was an important factor in music. I would never apologize for Elvis. Except maybe, the disparaging remark he once drunkenly uttered about Ray Charles. And, possibly, his albums of the late 80's/most of the 90's, (after "Blood & Chocolate), when he switched labels to Warner Bros.
That said, I'm going to the recycling center to scrounge up all of the pennies I can to buy me some 'shrooms. Hope these ones are good ~ the ones growing in my rain-soaked backyard have so far only given me mild stomachaches. If all works out, maybe later I will check back in and have something favorable to say about Eminem. (Wow, hallucinations, and I haven't even scored yet! Bonus!)

Wedding song - the problem is that the guys seldom make any "true" love-songs, IF they do a lovesong (lyrics) they dissociate themselves from the the subject (as they do in every song). So if I had to make a choice it would be "Fortunate Song", Bruce Hornsby.

Herm: You should never have to apologize for Elvis
Costello. A string of solid albums from My Aim is True through Armed Forces
through Imperial Bedroom and Blood and Chocolate, King of America to Spike he had
a knack for classic American pop songwriting style as in 30s through 50s
filtered into a Johnny Rotten/Dylan Thomas integrated circuit. Don't see
M&M displaying the intelligence and tunesmithmanship (from the Howard
Cosell lexicon) of Alison, Chelsea, Pump it Up, Radio Radio, Man Out of Time,
Oliver's Army, Green Shirt, Red Shoes, Every Day I Write th Book Satellite,
Veronica and on and on. Maybe he ran out of steam after the collaboration with
Sir Paul fell by the wayside (My Brave Face is as enjoyable as some of the best
of their songs). Because he's a stylist, I did not fathom the power of
Costello's vocals until I saw him live. Incredible!
Just got back from a late hinght grocery run. The McDoobies I Know Your Made That Way and Fagen's New Frontier were piped in on cue. To seque - had checked out the midnight run of the Doobie story Sun aslo. The McDonald/Skunk rift was news to me. It tickles me though. Skunk and SD parted since Skunk wanted to hit the road more - and we know what D&W thought of touring in the 70s. Then with the Doobies, they're touring out the wazoo, but the experimentation he enjoyed being a part of on Countdown to Ecstasy was squelched or attempted to by MM. The jazzy licks on Your Made That Way fot me thinkin'. Other may disagree but I think Skunk was right. One Step Closer (recorded after Skunk quit) and MM's solo efforts are much blander. Perhaps MM had his best songwriting days behind him...but there's something about building a confort zone that is the antithesis to creativity.

Truly great, when that horn comes in toward the end.
Almost Gothic: I know I am
probably totally out in left
field here, but I truly believe that Donald wrote it to
Libby. (Little Eva meets the Bleecker Street Brat)
I still love that song. My number 2 favorite after Jack
of Speed.

Happy Shrove Tuesday to those who observe it! I decided not to eat pancake supper this year. Instead, me and my wife went for two luscious lobsters from Fisherman's (a local deal). Happy, happy!
Alta--- congrats on your new job! How's traffic in Rockville -- terrible, I guess. No one makes the traffic interesting up there, IMO. On an earlier post, indeed not all Christians observe Lent. Fundies (fundamentalists --- Jerry Falwell's disciples) do not; I guess because Jesus die for (and save just) them everyday and they hate and/or are totally ignorant of the Church Calendar thingy. BUT THEN I DON'T KNOW IF I WANT TO CALL THEM CHRISTIANS --- PEOPLE WHO ARE HOMOPHOBIC, WOMEN-HATERS AND DOWNRIGHT UN-JESUSLIKE!

The more I listen to "Almost Gothic", the more it becomes one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard ("Deacon Blues" will FOREVER reign as #1). This type of tune seems so out of character for B&F, yet on the other hand, when you've come to expect the unexpected from these two geniuses, nothing surprises you anymore. FOllowing "Janie Runaway" on the disc, it makes for one helluva massive one/two punch......By the way, what's that other guy's name - Enima? Enemy? UmaThurm? M&M? More important.......who cares? lp- naw, I don't want to get any angrier, see, I can't think of a good word that rhymes with "Kukoc."
Herm- XRT was great, I don't listen to it now, but I grew up on that. The earliest I remember was mid-80s, lots of Costello and other good stuff, and my parents remember listening to it in the 70s when it was a Spanish station until midnight, then it would cross over to the current format.
14 for me was probably my angriest, roughest music period. Before I got into blues to take the edge off. I think that's why I never got into the self-loathing 90s crap music, all the anonymous corporate rock bands that came after the initial early 90s wave. No Matchbox Third Eyed Creeds, or whatever.
14 was my usual diet of classic rock, but a lot of Replacements, Afghan Whigs, Queen, Pumpkins. The only Steely Dan I consistently listened to, 2-3 times a month, was Pretzel Logic. Knew all the words to all the songs on Katy and Aja, but never listened to it consistently.
Also, 1994 was the year I spent half of in an institution after a bad shroom/E/burrito incident, something about trying to recover from the fact that Pete Myers was Chicago's starting off guard.
Without knowing any better, I took that lame white boy angst and let it go through the blues. I wasn't moaning and cryin', that would be even lamer, but the music itself gave me perspective and clarity, something I wouldn't have gotten through any other music. I was lucky, kids today aren't. Remember, a lot of these kids' parents grew up on MTV, so the kids shouldn't know any better. Damn shame, but not worth wasting time bemoaning or lamenting, in my opinion.
Anyone see that Doobie Brothers Behind the Music on VH1 last week? I taped it and watched it later, and I love this franchise; they make everything seem so severe, great drama where it doesn't belong.
More so than soloing style and predilection to touring, Skunk's attitude was probably thisclose from having him out of SD anyway. You don't know me, but I'm your brother...

Hey,
Remember me? I'm the guy who said he wouldn't be around for a while.
I can't believe that I'm about to say this, but, let's be fair: we are reading the comments of a bunch of angry 11 - 14 year olds. I'm sure that back in 1978 when I was 14, (going on 15), I, too, was pissed because "Saturday Night Fever" won best album, and not "My Aim Is True", or "Nevermind The Bullocks", or whatever I was into at the time. Say all you want about this group of kids lack of sophistication, but I'm sure none of us were all that much better back then when we were riled up either. We may not think so now, because we not only tend to make ourselves sound much better in retrospect, but we also didn't have the Internet ~ which would have made our every immature and ridiculous statement public information to the world. Back then, we could vent our feelings to a much smaller group of like-minded kids and never had to worry about our syntax being scrutinized by an older generation. I can still remember feeling that Beach Boys and Elvis Presley fans, probably no more than 10 to 15 years older than me, were old farts and complete idiots. Hopefully, someday these kids will grow up and look back at all this and laugh hysterically, realizing how stupid they were. That's not to say that I now think that Elvis Costello and the Sex Pistols were passing fads ~ quite the opposite. I think they were, and still are, important factors in the music world. But, we did have a lot of crap that we ardently worshipped as well. To make my point, I submit that I currently do not visit the guest books of either Wham! or the Plasmatics. (Imagine that double-bill!) MTV has a lot to do with this, too: every word and movement of every celebrity for the length of their shelf life is monitored and issued forth as text from some religion. Kids are forced, more or less, to inhale and exhale a lot more "news" and gossip than we ever did at the same age. They hear their "heroes" getting pissed, and they attempt to emulate the same posture. We did pretty much the same thing, only our informational sources were limited to what we read on a monthly basis in rolling Stone, Creem, or Trouser Press. (Or, for those in Illinois, IE).
I guess what I'm trying to say is give the kids a break. Things are different nowadays. The reason they don't know who Steely Dan is because radio, and now video staions, is fragmented and much more narrower in scope than it was when we were kids. My station growing up was WXRT, back in Chicago. They'd play Elvis Costello, the Police, the Buzzcocks, then, the Grateful Dead, Pat Metheny, Jean-Luc Ponty, Zappa and Todd. As a listener, you learned a lot fast. It was like a musical university. It's not that way anymore, so it's no wonder kids don't know who these old fogeys are. Don't blame them because they don't have the resources to learn more. Blame them maybe for not having the inclanation, but that comes with wisdom, and wisdom comes with age. And don't blame them for a lack of musical sophistication. Blame today's radio and TV marketers, programmers, and everyone else that brain washes these poor kids on a daily basis. These kids aren't that bad ~ they're you and me from just a few years back. If you think about it, you'll begin to remember. All kids are inherently programmed to rebel against people older than them, and years from now, they'll be right where we are now, wondering the same damn things.
Time to go back in the cave. Man, is L.A. rainy in February.
Later,
Herm

Steely Dan has a Song Called "Cousin Dupree" it's about a guy who wants to have sex with his cousin. It is pretty gross. No one was at the Grammys protesting them. Eminem is awesome and so SEXY!!!! I would love to have a night alone with him. I'm glad he speaks his mind.
**...I was also disappointed in
the fact that Em didn't win the Grammy.
Who knows who the hell Steely Dan is?
They haven't even put out a single in over 30 yrs!
I could be wrong, but they're obviously not important.
Of course, Em was going to be disappointed that he didn't win. Regardless of
his lyrics in the song Real Slim Shady he had to be hurt a little just as
anyone would be. Atleast he got nominated!
He seems like such a nice guy.
I live only a few hours from him and hope to meet him someday even if it is
only to see his face.
It's always exciting to see a celebrity.
**Eminem was robbed by Steely Dan, i mean he is good too but.. oh forget it, anyhow i would have prefered that grammy for Radiohead

Was gone for the day as in cross country at dangerous hours, no traffic jams however and loads of books in the back of the van. Even when I'm not @home on friendly terms with the computer, there's always something that reminds me of the "other" world and the reality beneath the bits & bytes.
Found three books that look like they have never really been read and amazement, well, I'm quite beyond all of that in these sinc-y days :-)
First, a book by Hannah Arendt, a collection of some of her work that never was translated into dutch until 1999. And that's the book I found! Should make Blaise and Ole (you're into Hannah as well if I recall?) smile some, right? A lecture "Labor, Work, Action" 1964. An excerpt from Review of Politics, "The Concept of History:Ancient and Modern 1958. Another lecture "Philosophy and Politics" 1954. "Von der Menschlichkeit in finsteren Zeiten, gedanken zu Lessing" 1959. "Laudatio auf Karl Jaspers" 1958. And "Martin Heidegger ist achtzig Jahre alt" 1969.
The other two books are related to people I met via the Rickie Lee Jones site, but I guess most of you are also familiar with the writer Richard Brautigan, "Dreaming of Babylon". Long time ago I mentioned the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa and his Book of Disquietude, today I found his biography written by Angel Crespo who is known to be a true connaisseur of Pessoa's work!
The often intricate maneuvers of
Pessoa btw are similar to the kind of stunts DF & WB pull, kindred minds
etc.
Noooo kidding!
Miz D. so no lost Tribe there,
what a relief :-))
And about the publishing wheels of fortune or rejection, yep, it's a jungle. Me
Tarzan, you Jane. A monkey business. Who knows one day all you need to do is go
bananas and then .......
I'm sure however things will find their way!

"RAPPER Eminem got a second huge hug in a few days from Elton John and then launched into a four-letter attack on Steely Dan.
The controversial star, who lost out to the veteran rockers at last week's Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, said: "And the winner is...Steely Dan. Who the f*** are Steely Dan?" He then went on to perform several tracks, including his smash hit The Real Slim Shady.
Eminem had promised organisers to mind his language but his set was littered with swear words. He probably realised they can be edited from tonight's programme."

Even the National Enquirer mentions the duo - revealing pictures next issue perhaps:

LB - you are in the personal distribution list in my outlook address book marked GB - let me know if you wanna come off that list - i've crashed a few computers with overloaded jokes in my time here - miss you alti and gina
alti - congrats to you on embarking on very scary territory, kudos, a better man than i am, gunga din - you are aligned with the planning profession - in fact many communities, including mine, put planning with those divisions - at my last position i was on the rabies advisory board, an eclectic group, we had alot of fun discussing the role of government in rabies issues - e me anytime with what you are working on i would love to hear about it - you will get great cocktail party stories working there my friend, the last public health director i worked with worked for the feds and boy were his stories a riot - H&HS during the Carter Administration, what a hoot!
lecture series sounds great, we have some good ones here too but my night meeting schedule is already a family hassle so i don't want to add more to it.
update on the chat room - i had to leave to speak to the town attorney and i also seem to have a bad influence on that place, good thing i am taking this break - it was decided jwmalibu is going to open up a string of 7-11's in the malibu area with hadji, and ygk is joining the band Josie and the Pussycats as their producer, and he may do their charts for them too, very excited for their new ventures, aren't you?
be back at day's end to chat - outside internet email is still out, no outside email in to my desk

Hey y'all--
It's a mardi gras thing. Don't worry, I'll get over it soon.
As usual, sleep deprived, but still happy. Perhaps it's the Deludin.
lp: I hope you see this...would you, could you, add my address to the list..or is it like the A list and I am not yet "there"? Also, I admire your restraint. I have none with respect to accessing the GB.
Aus: You are too kind, and perhaps looking back through liquor-fogged glasses. The hype is hard to live up to!
NMN: I love the use of the word "excessive". One man's excess.....I'm not sure what I am giving up for Lent. We Presbyterians don't get too crazed about that sort of thing. I will try to be gentle vis a vis your 'likker' consumption. Know when to say when. When you are lying on the floor is not 'when'
YGK: Bring passes tomorrow. And tapes, s'il vous plait.
I need to grab lunch....tawk amongst yourselves. Topic: the group known as Steely Dan is neither made of Steel nor contains a person named 'Dan'. Discuss.
Smooches,

I'm here at my new job out in Maryland, and I was just about to see if I could spend my lunch hour in the chat room, but then I thought that perhaps finding out if I could get into the chat room on this machine might not be a wise thing to do on my first day. I might try it after I've been here a while.
lp--Remember, Lent is observed by all Christians, not just Roman Catholics. I'm planning to go to most of the Lenten lecture series at my parish; the speakers this year look pretty interesting. By the way, now I'm working in the public sector too, although, alas, not in planning--I'm at the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Hey everyone,
I am planning on getting married at some point next year and would like to dance with my dad to a Steely Dan song at my wedding since he is the one who introduced me to the group when I was 4.
My question is....which one would be appropriate? Any suggestions?
And I'll laugh in advance now for the wise ass who says Everyone's Gone To The Movies or something else perverse.

Steely Dan back in the news this morning. That makes
3 out of the last 4 days, they have had a story on them
in the L.A. Times. Retailers High on Steely Dan.
basicly the same stuff as in most of the other articles, but an interesting
note. The substantial increase in sales is on the new album, not on the entire
SD calalog. Figures for last
week come out on Wednesday.
No, I don't think SD will ever drop back to relative
obscurity again.

hey, happy mardis gras - fat tuesday - eat drink and be merry for tomorrow is lent
blaise, you musta popped into my conversation yesterday with aja - last night was not very religious that i can remember - thank god that text scrolls and doesn't get saved like here
hey steviedan and GE, sorry i missed you guys too - will be in tonight after yet another meeting
part of my lenten sacrifice is giving up the time i spend during the day on the internet - i won't give up, however, my email chats (though my internet email is still out), so if i'm on your email list or you are on mine, then i will still keep in touch with you (tones, i will scroll today and get your e) - this is sorta become a vice, that is, taking me away from other duties, so the time i would psend here will be spent taking a walk, likely some prayer and reflection and tending to other responsibilities, but it also has been a necessary sanity break, a new connection with new friends that i really look forward to talking to in here, in chat and in email (hence why i can't give up the third), so the quandry remains as to what a vice is - so my compromise is giving up chat and the gb and sticking to email, since that takes the least of my time and i can control how much i do a day (like when i don't answer an email, right sh?)
as i said to aja yesterday - my soul needs an enema and i want to spend my lunchtime/freetime doing just that for the next forty days
the question remains: can she do it - lol - for i'm not blessed with the self-control of aus and others here who just post once a day, some days i'm worse than my buddy blaise! i blame my catholic school education (of course, can't take my own hits) for thwarting my creativity so much so that upon entry to adulthood, it would explode into a meteor shower
luckily i have a tight meeting schedule today so will only check in a couple of times - i will go to chat at work day's end and tonight though, so if anyone's interested, come on over with me
i'm sure this post will bring out a field day of postings as to what's wrong with the catholic church, just remember this country's commitment to diversity as you rank on this tradition (smirk) - i respected and supported a previous secretary's dedication to ramadan, and another's need to take time off for jewish holidays (traded time for her with the anglo holidays, worked great), so why can't i expect the same - but anyway, it's a free guestbook, so have fun, go nuts, discuss amongst yourselves, don't get all verklempt, and i'll see you here after easter, unless an irritating post brings me back here today ;)
oh, and chips is coming along for my ride into lent's tomb too :p (no more ramones for that guy for a while)

Steven Flow, discs arrive like butter flyers. The
gimmicks some will pull... but it's probably done in sn effort to compete with
the 54 different live concerts already available online.
Steely Dan has a least a half-dozen out there from the last tour.
Definitely a "quantity over quality" affair. I still think they
should consider releasing a live album with that material, if they recorded any
themselves. We do have the Plush and Storytellers but we're greedy bastards,
aren't we?
An appropriate title right now would be something like "(Still) Alive in
America". This considering Dre is - and I loosely quote - "really
pissed off"...
