Joe!--great to see you. I have the screensaver up, and it's cut down on my surfing time.... I just sit there and stare at it instead....
Zeke--Back atcha! E me sometime about the Fest.
RS--Mick Jagger and Don Knotts.... I will get NO sleep tonight.
tones--great blow x blow. Thanks for making it easy for me not to watch. Interesting that for 2 years now the best album winners had almost NO radio airplay.
Bill--agreed. "Love & Theft" rules.
Jimbo--Just a few weeks ago I got out "Nightbirds" to show the offspring how that song is SUPPOSED to sound. Ooh, could they wail. That album holds up reeeeal nice. Also love how Patti Labelle does "Most Likely You'll Go Your Way."
tom--please add one for the Permasqueeze!
Speaking of links, St Al, I never got the e-mail you said you were sending out re: San Diego Danfest. Would you mind sending it directly to me? I signed up for the listbot but missed this one.
Thanks wormy! I'm gonna go put on Dr. John now......
Juluka, that was an interesting group. I still have my "Fever" EP and "Scatterlings" LP. Wish Johnny Clegg would do release something over here!
Over and out,
Aja
You tell him Zeke! Damn good to see you around again.
Speaking of posters from the past... Joe Murtha! How the hell are you?
Joe was the second person to ever post to this message board. That was a long time ago...
I still say Dennis Miller's humor fits Steely Dan's music best. Leary's delivery is too in-your-face. Steely Dan's music is anything but. However, Roy, I see your point. By the way, speaking of old posters...How's the wife?
StAl
blow it out your ass, spike spike...
Zeke, Zeke, the pencil neck geek.....
Zeke here.
It's been a while.
Hope to see you guys at Jazz Fest.
Dude, Bob Dylan is F'n awesome. He was truley robbed last night. I got a chance to see him in New Orleans recently. I don't know, I must be getting old, I'm not into Train at all. My highlight of the Grammys was seeing Dylan play and a short piece on Joni Mitchell.
There was a story on WWL radio recently, a caller for an afternoon show mentioned she brought her daughter door to door selling Girl Scout Cookies and to her surprise, Bob Dylan answered the door. And bought cookies.
Shadowing, not escorting. Interesting difference. Here's the AP story.
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&u=/ap/20020228/ap_on_re_us/suspicious_flight_2
Sorry shouldn't make light of this. But why me, sir?
Confirmed, sir. Target at 8 o'clock. Waiting for orders. over.
Canadian fighters now shadowing Air India flight.....
http://www.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/02/28/fat.cloned.mice.ap/index.html
Just across Reuters: A person on the Terror Watch List is believed to be on board an Air India Flight headed to New York City's JFK Airport....Boeing 747 involved...from London's Heathrow.......now said to be 50/50% chanse of the right man......
The music industry is a lousy judge of it's own talent.
They'd better
leave that job to us.
Album of the year goes to... Bob Dylan "Love and Theft"
Don't you remember, paul? EVERYTHING on me is perky. After that fateful evening we spent together, you oughta know that. Now what happened to that 8mm reel of evidence? I bet you have it in a vault just waiting to leak it to the press. Okay, okay. What do you want in trade for the film?
Clas
Have the steely bananas split yet ??
Good bye Spike - We'll miss you
lcpaul: That's a good lesson in the fragility of CGI scripts. Never trust them! Best bet is to write your post in notepad, or better yet, Word (spell checker!) and then post it. This always leaves an open copy of your post in the event the script crashes, which it did yesterday. Sorry.
The Grammy's were yesterday?
Jimbo: Come on man, admit it! You LOVE NSync. And I'd rather get a little sugar from YOU than Celine Dion. YUK! DOUBLE YUK! (in both cases I might add).
Wormy and all the rest of you Jazzfesters. I'll bet if you asked nice like, Hoops would fire up a New Orleans mail list for your use. Just an idea if you want to grow it a little bit. Not so good if you wish to keep it *in the family*.
MU: Nelly Furtado doesn't look quite the same without all that makeup and colored contact lenses on. Still, I'd take some sugar from her.
StAl
flame: that was awfully funny. Stevie's pretty slick with that thumb...remember that classic Canon commercial parody on SNL years ago?
LP: Me too...No woman should ever sound like Allen Iverson or
Boomhauer... There's a little hip hop on the first 2 cuts, but it's all
R&B from there AND original notes and arrangements (mostly by Ms Keys).
Duh, no wonder I heard Isaac Hayes - just say on CD.Now that he arranged the
strings...back to work
OK - was it just me, or was Stevie Wonder READING the Grammy award envelope?
As I said to my friends - "Look, Stevie is Reading!"
Roy. Scam- I agree. Denis Leary would make a great host. He's funnier than
Jon Stewart, has a great show that ABC probably is scared of and
although
he only has two comedy Cds, he is one of the most honest comedians to comeout
since Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce.
Getting back at the show, I would have liked to see Sade accept the award
for Pop Album ON TV! The woman is elegant, crisp, original and
doesn't try
to (sorry MaryJ.) get over dramatic on stage.
I wish I was Stevie Wonder. Not only presenting last year's Album of the Year to our favorite villains of the music industry, but also getting a little sugar from Celine and Bonnie. Wink wink, nudge, nudge. Say no more;)
Bob Dylan: This is how rock was truly born.
Alan Jackson- Ok song, good purpose but kinda dull when you follow up the Soggy Bottom Boys.
I think it's time for country artists to stop sounding happy and plesant and try to follow examples of other Grammy winners as when as past winners such as Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.
A few years ago when Cash won for best country CD, he never got much airplay from country radio stations and was ignored. He celebrated by putting up a 1960's picture of him along with thanks to the country radio stations for their support. The picture: Him sticking his middle finger at the camera.
Last year was better- Our boys gave their middle fingers to the
industry
and made them look like crap.
That's all!
hey there mu - yes alicia has some talent, but excuse me, is there a speech therapist in the house for her? i know i sound old, but gees, this "in da hood" accent drives me crazy on national television - enunciate dammit! lol!!!!
okay let me have it for not accepting diversity in accents, but come on! get to school, girl!
neil finn - wow - will look for that!
got dylan's cd last night - have not been able to listen to it yet
Roy: I can count on you to bring some Randy Newman/Dan/Dennis Miller quips to the Grammy proceedings...
"That's sort of like reading Salinger to the springer spaniel isn't it?"
Dylan and Boomhauer - Yes!!
Yeah, I bet the ex-lead singer of the Dixie Chicks is saying - "see I
was right all along"
From my perspective, the soul aspect was one of the few highlights. Al
Green still has it fo' sure, and does he seems to grow younger every year!
Brian McKnight was very good as well, a tougher sounding Luther Vandross.
India Arie was solid, though Sade (congrats to their pop Grammy) or Erykah
Badu have a better feel for that style...
I will have to admit that I had not listened to Alicia Keys' album, though I had heard the single plenty. Certainly she wins the "be glad if you can use what you borrow" award for this year...but listening closely to some legal samples - Songs in A Minor is possibly a damn good, if derivative, piece of work. She has great pipes and plays a mellow soul piano styling well. The album is unusually slick for a 20 year old, but not in the pre-packaged Destiny's Child sense. *Professional* is the word I would use. I hear oodles of influences, but to my knowledge no sampling. a little Erykah Badu hip-hop soul, Aretha, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, 80s Urban music (the stuff they would never play on mainstream radio or MTV) is all there. The soundscape is very balanced.
Mary J has got some pipes, but that hip-hop knack for ripping off other folks' stuff - tones picked up on the Y&R theme - kinda cracked me up...
I expected Nelly Furtado to spread her wings, but I thought her
performance with Steve Vai was leaden. Outside the studio, she doesn't have
the pipes or sense of rhythm to pull off subtle or syncopated renditions of
her own material - and I was so hot for her...
Did anyone else find Mr Green's? (the Academy's head) speech a bit
ironic, when there is a whole music genre that built on sampling...jeez, the
kidz are only following the artists' lead...
sigh, all we needed was Ben Folds and one angry dwarf...
any Crowded House/Neil Finn fans: Neil Finn has a new live album "7
Worlds Collide" just out here in the States as a Warm-up to the release of the
American packaged (2 new songs exchanging 2 of the weaker cuts) and others
remixed of "One All" (formerly One Nil) in April. Folks across the pond and
down-under are raving about the live CD (also available on DVD-V) with a
number of guests including Sheryl Crow and Eddie Vedder...
you know you've left the mainstream when you get more excited about the "sidebar" winners, you know the ones that are shown on the side of your tv screen, sometimes not even announced ("earlier this evening..."), than you do about the showcase awards
larry carlton won for his live in osaka and was that marcus miller winning as well?
now that's okay
Symptom 38 of Dan addiction is that one starts to lose interest in annual activities like a Danless Grammy Award Show. I can't seem to muster any righteous indignation or even firm contempt for this parade of musical entries, most of which i will never hear (or , if i heard, quickly forgot).
Congratulations to Larry Carlton. That's the one piece of music to which i was stimulated to listen. A deserving musician who has been accused of post-Dan boringness.
paul~ i agree with gusto on the choice of "Oh Brother ...". Good movie, good soundtrack album. Seems a little unfair , however, to have solo artists competing with compliation albums.-- Gotta like a winner who quotes James Joyce at the Grammy awards. That's sort of like reading Salinger to the springer spaniel isn't it?
What's the story with Janet Jackson getting progressively prettier and her brother, Mike, getting progressively ... not prettier. Wouldn't you think she'd give him some pointers or the phone number of a consultant or something? Aside from being on opposite ends of the the beauty spectrum, they actually look alike. In fact, both have reached the point where their appearance causes people to say "Oh my God!"
Bob Dylan's vocal stylings seem to be aimed lately at emulating the Baumhower character on "King of the Hill". In fact, there was an episode where Dylan and Baumhower conversed. The audial equivalent of Mick Jagger posing with Don Knotts.
Nelly Furtado~ Great song. I also am like a bird. I eat twice my weight daily; i communicate primarily with squawks and screeches; and i buzz around and intentionally annoy people and household pets.
Sorry to see David Gray lose. So far I've loved every pop song with the word 'Babylon' in the title.
My choice for most Steely Dan-like comedian is Dennis Leary. (Steven Wright is more Zappa-like to me.) Leary, like Becker and Fagen, takes characters like criminals, philanderer's, folks with bad habits, etc. and unapologetically humanizes them. He parades his faults and warts in front of the judgemental masses and says, in effect. "Hey. It's the human condition. Squeeze some joy out of it if you can and don't waste your time and energy taking yourself so seriously."

Not trying to dominate the GB. Just in a chatty mood.
Thought choice of best album was inspired. Loved the movie. Loved the music. Dig all the Coen brothers' movies.
Just caught the latest one: "The Man Who Wasn't There" with Billy Bob (who's just released his first album - anyone heard it?). This exquisite picture just picked up a major award for cinematography, the forerunner and often predictor of the same award at the Oscars. Also has a beautiful soundtrack, much more in a classical vein though.
I urge you all to see this jewel.
Now it's Dave Matthews who, I proudly hasten to add, is South African.
Listening to "The Key to Your Ferrari" off "Aliens Ate My Buick" by Thomas Dolby. Wow, I'd forgotten how good it is. Man! Great cover art as well.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
that should be "presenters and winners backstage looking into a camera"...
Wrote a long post yesterday, but it wouldn't stick for some reason. Very frustrating that.
jjeff, Juluka/Savuka, no, not together anymore. Juluka consisted of two core band memebers - Johnny Clegg AKA Les Zoulous Blanc (The White Zulu) and Sipho Mchunu (a real Zulu and ex herdboy). Johnny still does some solo work, in fact, performed in Cape Town on Sunday night. Juluka were big in France (no, not Japan!) and all over Africa. When I was in Madagascar in '89, they were the biz. In the movie "Rain Man", at the beginning, where Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman are cruising along in the Ferrari, there's a Juluka song on the stereo. Frost? Nah, temperatures hovering around 38 C at the moment. Airconditioning essential.
Roger Waters played live in Cape Town last night. Heard it was a blast. Personally don't do "Live" anymore. Can't stand the queueing and jostling,, the portable toilets and beer in plastic glasses (plastic glasses? Malapropism or what?)
jimbo, belated happy birthday.
Duncan, you OK bro?
Hey Gwen, didn't you look a picture at the Love Rocks concert. Necktie, no shirt and perky tartan cap. The Blue Banana has ordered in a dozen cases of Bollinger in anticipation of your next visit to our fair shores.
Later.
Oh that's right Jimbo. Latin music was so two years ago. Jazz was last year's prom dress.
test
Hey everyone. Grab some chips and have a seat...
Maaaaaaaaaaaan... Missed U2 on the Grams because I was reading about them here on the gb... and that's pretty much all I wanted to see. Caught the end of 'Walk On'... how was it folks?
Made it through the faux 'Lady Marmalade' only to hear Patti Labelle wasted on a crap arrangement, that left her with nothing to sing! (!?)... That was fucked up.
Now they're giving the faux ho's collaborative product of the year...
sound off...! (playing the new Nitin Sawhney cd while I watch this...)
-------------->Jimbo, glad to hear somebody else remembers Sarah and Nona... and that thing about the Grammy voters and lyrics: that guy had no point. Industry people do the voting. Most of them would only know the lyrics of the songs they worked on.
What's with having the presenters look and winners (all of whom have just performed so far... so much for any semblance of impartiality... oops, wait. Alicia Keys just won instead of Beyonce(tm) Inc. Lmt., all rights preserved. Of course Alicia will probably be performing later...)
Looks like Train...
Hmmm... interesting looking Latin fellow on the tube... ugh! Right before I reached for the remote I saw Beyonce(tm) Inc. Lmt., void where prohibited (for instance, on my tv) and co. Whew... that was close!
------->Hey Mz. Ducky (Hi! )... I think we'd have a Dan-tana sandwich on two slices of Zimmy if Dylan wins tonight...
Tony Bennett and Billy Joel... these guys were nominated agaist the Faux ho's and lost? Obviously eliminated because they can actually sing. They was robbed!!
*NSync? sound off...!
Oh yeah... wanted to see this: the O' Brother WHere Art Thou performance. Now THESE people can sing and play! Too bad they cram all the folk country acts together into some sort of revue... but then again, it's like the "Dream Team" of folk country here... a little stiff though... but it's still good to hear "real" music of the Grammy's ... it's been slim pickin's (heh heh) so far...
sorry...
---------->Don't you just *love* the smell of a cinnamon scented candle?
John Stewart raises a few smiles... Yeah... a dixie Chick says "bluegrass kicks ass!" Yes ma'am...
Now just how are they deciding who gets the O' Brother awards? I think that Batman dude had a lot to do with it... where is he?
-------->Steviedude, I'm throwong Richard Pryer's name in the Dan comic ring... and of course Lenny. Seriously funny views of serious stuff, though fortunately with neither's private life tragedy, knock on wood...
ahh yes... Alicia Keyes... "clever" rewrite of "It's a Man's Man's World"... doesn't sound like she's listening to the orchestra... god awful arrangement/production number... so young, and already so vegas...
Ugh! Where's my 'Dr. No' cd...!
Wow. I'm "shocked". Alicia Keyes just won. She's "shocked" too.
---------->Hey Ba-lazer! When does curling season start? Pssst... btw, don't tell anybody here, but I was rooting for Wayne and Mario...
-----------> Aus, thanks for the CSN&Y (and Cabo) colour. It was a treat, and the addendum about the long outros added perpective too.
Dave Matthews band...
------------->I was going to give my take on the Spearhead show I saw a couple of weaks (sp) ago... but I couldn't get time to throw down my impressions. Short story: I've played the album almost everyday for two weeks since then...
Kid Rock give a shoutout to Waylon... alright. (would have been nice if someone had mentioned Georgr Harrison...)
U2 wins... Edge is hilarious! Who knew? I have to agree with this one...oh no! They're cutting Bono off!! Ha! And he's ignoring them. Way to go! He must not realise they just want him to be *seen* and not *heard*.
This whole production is WAAAAYYYY too stiff!!! Would anybody buy music from any of these people????!!! (except for the people on here I like, of course. And I may be jaded... ok. maybe a bit...) Ooops... forgot to turn the sound off... getting hard to tell the difference between the "show" and the "commercials"...
Bobby D is in the HOWSE! This honkytonk is jumpin'! Hey... he's playin'... odds are he gonna win!!
Wow. Dylan just kicked ass (im-genuinely-ho). Easily my fav so far.
O'brother just won album of the year! yes!!! oh... and they're bum rushing the illustrious winners off the stage in mid-speech. Talk about no respect!! Do the losers have to leave by the rear entrance?
Mary J Blidge... seems like a lot of "drama" to me... Have to hand it to her (arraingers) though... I don't hate this... and they're treading on sacred territory using the Y&R theme...
------------> hey lp, what's the deal with them still showing Ryan's picture at the start and he's been dead for three months? Speaking of which, they seem to be dropping like flys now. Notice how it's only the ones who can actually *act*? Some kind of perverse "quality control".
Ooops... "commercial" or "show"?
This anti-cd burning riff the President of the Recording Association is on totally missing the point. The point is that no one had access AT ALL to some of this music until the internet becuase the record labels do a *lousy* job of promoting and distibuting music. They insist on feeding people music through a tiny straw, and it's the *same crap* coming through the straw, over and over, ad nauseum. Much like this telecast.
Looks like Outkast are the token rap act this year... Too bad. Would have loved to see/hear Michael Franti and Spearhead 'Rock the Nation'... but that would have been too real for this commercial...
What a difference a year makes... best Latin album was presented offstage... of course, next year bluegrass will be tossed aside like a rented prom dress...
whew... I'm getting sleepy...
Alan Jackson...
India.Arie... bringing the rasta-soul... and I like it!! She seems genuine...
Stevie Wonder in da Howse... let him play... PLEASE!!! Oh well...
Hey all right! U2 again... maybe they'll let Larry talk this time... ok, it's Adam and Bono... Yeah Bono... don't let them give ya the hook!!!
Gospel... bad pacing... after all this they think the average joe and joni are going to stay tuned? Even if Rev. Al Green is testifyin' most people got to work tomorrow...
This show kinda sucked. Remember the "good ol' days" when the Dan was winning Grammys?
Thanks for putting up with this. Feel free to initiate legal proceedings if I typed too long...
all typos and misspellings copyright tones '02
The Soggy Bottom Dudes win album of the year over Bob Dylan's
"Love and
Theft"? Man, I give up...
The Grammy's can bite me!
(Unless Don and Walt show up next year...)
Angel- Thanks for the article. With big conglomerates eating up the highly established companies, I think they have to consider that every artist has a mind of it's own and that the artist doesn't have to be brainwash to be the next product of packaged music like the teen acts, Britney,or any flavor of the moment.
I just got done watching the Grammys. And what I have to say is HUH?
Okay, explain to me why those five girls who butchered a Labelle classic would get a standing ovation and not Tony Bennett and Billy Joel.
Patti Labelle only gets less than a minute to throw down on stage.
Worse,
those five girls win the award and not even a thank you to Patti in
any of their speeches. Remember Michael Bolton not thanking Percy
Sledge
after winning for his soppy version of When a Man Loves A Woman, a
song that Percy never won a Grammy for?
Jon Stewart- Okay, who said that he could come back and host again. I'm
sorry, I just think that he's about as funny as Lenny Bruce is today (if
you
know what I mean). Billy Crystal could kick his ass. Same goes for
Eddie Murphy. Both could host the show and teach him how it's done.
NO JAZZ PERFORMANCES! AMERICA'S MOST ORIGINAL ART FORM AND NO TIME FOR JAZZ? Diana Krall could present, but not perform? Evil!
Now for the positives:
Nice speech by the President of the RIAA, a welcome change of pace from last year's sucking up to Enema, I mean Eminem. Right in accordance of what Angel was talking about. Artist's rights and bunch of idiots trying to take away even the livelyhood of some struggling artists.
U2 ruled the Grammys. After 22 years, they still can teach the Show Biz Kids how it's done.
Alicia Keys- Graet night, I hope she doesn't lose her focus with the success she's having.
India. Arie- Rough night, but good performance. Your time will come.
Oh Brother- Now those sorry country artists will try to copy
bluegrass.
Nice to see the Soggy Bottom Boys as well as Emmylou Harris.
Emmylou looks sexier with grey hair, but that's my opinion.
Sade won Pop Album and still kicking N'Stink's asses! WOO HOO!
NO STEELY DAN JOKES! YESSS!
Billy and Tony's tribute to New York. very poignant and strong.
But overall, the tone of the Awards were quite dull.
It didn't have the
satisfaction of last year, when our boys rocked and shocked the entire music
industry and made them pout.
Next year, unless our boys put out a new one in time to get nominated,
I
may not watch the Grammys. That means I'll probably go to a Pitt basketball
game.
If anyone else watched the Grammy's , I hope it was as good as taking Nytol.
See Ya!
Bill -- to answer your question, "How did Don and Walt get involved with Thomas Jefferson Kaye"? Here's the answer from the Mojo interview from:
http://www.steelydan.com/mojo.html
GARY KATZ MANAGED TO GET A FEW BECKER & FAGEN COMPOSITIONS
placed on
albums he was working on - notably Thomas Jefferson Kaye's First Grade - and
he put a little session work their way, but it was obvious to all that as
songwriters their material was too eccentric and personal to fit most other
artists' styles.
Catch you guys in a few days or whenever I'm back online, the computer
is going for repairs any day now so if you don't see me for a few days any day
soon you'll know why.
Dragon
Flamo (Blammo)- I did not make that Nervous Norvus stuff up. If you go on one of those "Napster" type sites, and search for either Transfusion or Ape Call, you can find those songs among others. I remember these from my twisted childhood (now what was it you said about weirdos?).
Gina - that was cute. Just remember that the origin of the Banana comment was based on making fun on my band The Steely Dan Band, which is based in Orange County, California. Someone changed the name to Santa Ana Banana Band. That's where it all started. I am still laughing about this name. Fantastic! In a way, I wish it really were the band's name. But, fortunately, I have no say in the matter, so that's that.
So ... how many Monkees fans does it take to screw in a lightbulb? I suppose they'll let us know right after they finish all the bananas.
Stevee(Day-Oh!)Dan
...jeez, taking a break from the work I could not get to at the office - Dylan's on the Granmammy's. Man, I want him on that wall...I need him on that wall...at the very least so we don't gave to listen to Bono's incoherencies one more time at the end of the night. It's organic...but can anybody understand even ONE syllable Dylan's mumbling??!!!
Hello all,
Yeah, I know... It's been waaaaaaay too long.
Anyhow, I know this is real short notice but I have two (2) tickets available for the Pat Metheny Group at the Warner Theater tomorrow night in Torrington, CT at 8:00PM. The tickets are Aisle 2 Row CC Seats 115 and 117 (right next to each other).
I paid $45.00 apiece for them but I'm willing to take a best offer from
anyone who wants them. I can meet you at the venue before hand at 7:30 in
front of the ticket booth.
Thanks,
Joe
Shea Seger and Alanis Morrisette, two gals who sure know how to make a difference, nice nice music.
Blame it on the Moon, the most clearest of this year so far and nearest to
our own planet, so its vibes reign ... Steveeduh, sorry but you ask for this
now "sir", sigh, that Black Cow wasn't stiff enough to drink and you did
anyhow, now look what happens :-) If craving for fruit is what's eating you,
imagine how the fruit of your choice must be feeling once in your tummy ... if
i were you, i'd be careful around bananas now, for word on the street is they
all stick together. And bananas get around, you know. They're everywhere. Plus
they know how to sweet talk a cherry or an apple, any apple for that matter.
Oh yes, they even managed to infiltrate in the seclusive kingdoms of
strawberries. Bananas rule, they take the cake anytime!
I'm not accountable
for these actions, i'm a victim of the Full Moon and its Tides. Yep. Oh, did i
just hear a peach cry out "bite me"? Steveeduh, that's your call i think :-)

I'll be the one in the faux fur parka, clas...send horse and sleigh to

Angel- I didn't even know there was an Artist's Rights Coalition concert.
Who played on the concert and did the Eagles have anything to do with
it?
By the way, has this coalition have anything to do with copyrights as
well as independence from record companies?
All keyboard players are frickin wierd!!!!!
Hello Doctor ¦ - Let's not forget Nervous Norvus. He's the guy who did
"Transfusion, transfusion, got to get the cotton-pickin' resolution ... Never,
never, never gonna speed again ... pop the fluid to me Louie ..." and,
"Ape
call ... doodlee-abba, ape call ... doodlee-abba. Ape call ... ddolee-abba ...
Ya wanna be cool Jool, go ape."
And to Luckless Pedestrian - forget about the silly Mojo site's Monkees vs. Steely Dan travesty. Those people are so devoid of intelligence and musical knowledge that saying anything to them is a waste of time. You, me and all the rest of us here and at Hoop's place (among many other sites) know the real deal. Let 'em eat cake. Old, moldy cake.
Stevee(Ape Call)Dan
Stevee: Ahhh, that clears it up...
St. Al: Rocky and Bullwinkle, also. Yeah, you can hear Spike J big time in Zappa, or course Weird Al, and dare I say some in Ben Folds, too. The post- post- post- modern group I'd cite for a significant Spike Jones influence is They Might Be Giants. Lincoln is a good album of theirs to find...
I believe the "Spike" who recently passed away is Spike Mulligan, from the Goon Show, and where the mighty Monty Python folks got their start. On the recently re-issued DVD of "Life Of Brian", you can see Spike in the front of the crowd in the scenes where the townspeople are following Brian (the part where Brian loses his sandal).
Howard, the Yamaha S 80 is a keyboard controller with lots of sounds in it, you are right. I am not aware of specific keyboards which are keyboard controllers only. Again, I mention www.musicplayer.com as a great place to post questions about this. You might even find someone there who would be willing to sell you an instrument for a great price. I have seen that happen there.
So Clas is now fronting a Steely Dan tribute band of his own? Called The Steely Banana? Clas in a cover band? Say it isn't so !!!
Now that I think of it, I saw a post on the Blue pages by someone named
Santa Ana Banana Band. Clas were you inspired by that person to start your own
"Banana" band? Does this make you the top banana? Be sure to always let us
know where your Steely Banana band plays. Maybe I will charter a jet to you
(don't hold your breath though).
All this talk of fruit is making me
hungry.
Steveedan
Yeah, St. Al, you lost my post..... sigh....
Yes, gonna be watching the Grammys. What the heck, I need a good
laugh.
I wonder it the dynamic duo will show up? More public floggings? Not
if they can help it, I am sure, but they might not have a choice.
Anyone else hear about the Artists Rights Coalition concerts that happended yesterday? Muddies the water at tonights Grammys, that's for sure.
And Mu -- Spike Jones provided great inspiration and fodder for Chuck Jones's Looney Tunes, as well as the music of Frank Zappa. Listen and you'll hear it everywhere.
HEIL! HEIL! right in der fuehrer's face...
Ducky: My money is on Scenario I.
As I said earlier I think the banyantrees.net transformation is complete. Want to thank MC for providing the previous guestbook header graphic, as well as all of you for hanging in there during the mess. This new host has been almost perfect. That is, up until a few hours ago when the script crashed. Didn't loose anything though, which is good.
1965
Now I am confused. Chuck Jones passed away Sunday. He of course is the quitessential Warner Brothers animator of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and al the whole Looney Tunes gang. His characters with an attitude said a lot about human nature. His works have the unique combination of being smart, sarcastic, topical, accessible, stylish, and timeless. Certainly, the Steely Dan of animators worthy of indorect mention of the other WBs Girlfriend... He also contributed to Walt Disney's *real* animation masterpiece (I know Disney, Inc. loves to throw the term around) Sleeping Beauty (1955). I believe this is the only long format animation ever filmed in 70 mm. It has a unique litograph style and is done more like a series of paintings than Disney's other work. It was a critical success, but was not a boxoffice knockout, so Disney went for less ambitious animation until his death. Chuck Jones also directed everyone's favorite "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (1966). Don't think his nickname was Spike, eh doc??
Spike Jones was the wacky producer, conductor, composer of novelty after novelty record and his work was a mainstay of the Dr. Dimento show. He died in 1966:

New Foundland too, ultracool, The Naked Bunch, Faboulos Four?
Good to see the Tributes are alive and kickin'!
My name is Clas and I live in Sweden, far north, far out; JukkasjSrvi. I have this Steely Damned Tribute band, "Steely Bananas". We're playing at the Ice Hotel, Kiruna, Saturday - 3-2-02, 18.00
Hence the cold we'll be sure the Bananas are firm! Not stiff though. Just firm.

Stevieedan - I'm still hunting around the web for more keyboard info,
following up a couple of the links that you and others suggested. Thanks again
to all for their input on this - most useful.
The S-80 sure sounds like a nice keyboard. The quality Rhodes sounds definitely got my interest, but I think it's a bit above the price range I'm looking at. As someone already mentioned, it seems it's not easy to find a decent master keyboard that doesn't also come with a big bunch of sounds. I'd prefer to get something with no onboard sounds at all, but with quality keys and controllers. This is harder to find than I'd expected. Bottom line is - I need to try out a few different models and see which grabs me. Hope to do this soon.
Roland JV1080 expansion card may well give me the better electric piano/Rhodes/Clavinet sounds that I'd also like.
Howard
Very sad news about Spike - he will be greatly missed. One of the finest comic brains of all time, no doubt.

Spike's gone...

Perhaps, and not because of his particular style, Rodney Dangerfield? i.e..."I don't get no respect"
Listen Oleander, I love LA too, but enough already about Peter Gabriel...though it's interesting that he shares a hat fetish ("You can leave your hat on") with Dylan ("Leopardskin pillbox hat") and the Dan ("The fez").
First- a belated thank you to those who wished me a happy birthday.
second- Peter Gabriel on a Naughty By Nature record? A sampler's dream come true, I'm sure. Hey Peter, can you also take the time to do a Cd for your adoring public? I've been waiting solong, my sideburns are sprouting something gray. Not Good.
third- Is anyone going to watch the grammys tonight. I might.
The quality of the music is a little better, but here's why I might watch.
Nelly Furtado, India.Arie, Alicia Keys, U2, Diana Krall, David Gray and Sade (my ideal woman).
I want Sade to win a Grammy and shock the world as our boys did last year.
I want to see Patti LaBelle clear the stage of Christina, Little Kim
and
anyone of the non-talented waifs who will try to butcher "Lady Marmalade" as
they did last year. That song is Patti's, Sarah's and Nona's. No one else
should touch it. Last years version is like colorizing The Maltese Falcon.
I want to see N'sTINK lose again. See, you knew I'd bring them up.
Finally, who will be dumb enough to make any Steely Dan jokes. If so, we
should go to their houses, wrap them in cellophane, attach them to a big
speaker and make them listen to Christopher Cross, Yanni, Lee Greenwood
and
the antichrist of Jazz, Kenny G.. Make them listen until they can understand
the difference betwenn art and oversentimental crap.
That's all, for now. If anyone does or does not want to see the
awards
tonight, feel free to place your reasons or greivances here.
See Ya!
Jimbo
All hail the excessively talented and fulsomely creative jOker!!
stevieman--Indeed I do. Will buzz before landing.
Rich--um, no French? Et pourquoi? How about Quebecois? I have a reason for asking, and its name is Blaise.
jjeff--PLEASE say it isn't so. Peter Gabriel with NBN? And you're not saying that he's doing one of my absolute favorite songs of all time, "Shock The Monkey," is he? Is he?
La Duck--Apsatively fantastic. Food for many many satisfying vengeance dreams.
wormy--yes yes I said yes times two.
Aus--Man, I have already cashed in my travel chips with upcoming trips--too damn bad, because you make Baja irresistible!
hey mc - is there a correlation in the photo of the katydid in the url above to our honorable katy lied?

jjeff....fortunately I don't work anything as crazy as that....I work a 12 hour shift, monday, tuesday, friday, saturday & sunday the first week then only work wednesday & thursday the next week....then the cycle repeats....I'm on days, 7am - 7pm....the guys on nights are the ones who have it rough.
hope your Spring weather holds up.....it's been very warm here but we're supposed to get some of the coldest weather of the season starting tomorrow....stay warm!
Duncan....not sure what's going on with you buddy but you seem to really be down....I hope whatever it is will turn around for you soon....I'll keep a good thought for you!
ole....not sure about the Dan/Jazz Fest in NC but please keep me in the loop....as plans firm up I'll have a better idea if I can make it....thanks!

St.Al: Got Joe's Garage on CD but no way to get it to you. The hospital police have disabled all CD ports except for the business office, besides which I've never E-mailed in my life( yes, i admit it and feel so much better for it) and am not hooked up at home. Sorry, bro. I'll send it snail mail if you're desperate! I trust you.
Steviedan: Your query on most Dan-like comedian(ne) has got to be Richard Wright since he got 5 votes including mine. My most Dan-like WR blurb: You know when you're sitting in your chair leaning back on two legs and you lose your balance backwards, but just in time you catch it again...... I feel like that all the time.
Jimbo: did you have a birthday last week? 33? Some things take a while to sink in. Happy belated.
Rich: (You are). Shameless plugging is fine here and you show some wit too.
Aussie: Include my thanks in the many that acknowledged your revue. I saw CSN seems like 20 years ago and agree they're still masters of harmony. I have to say I wished Stills could have hit those notes on the originals where he jumps octaves with a crack in his voice like the cry of some exotic bird( suite Judy blue eyes).
Duncan: Hope things are looking better for you. Chin up. Think about what you have.
Mu:Your Miss Cleo. was great and I like it better with "face". You can make it too obvious. She's not THAT good.
MC( not Miss Cleo):What kind of shift rotation do you run on? There's a guy at the local Michelin who's claiming workman's comp. for lack of sleep. Now, after Shirl brings you out of your hysteria with a firm slap, apparantly Michelin has taken to changing patterns every couple of days. Ten years ago when I knew people who work there the shift would change every 3 weeks. Workman's comp. say it's a legitimate claim, first in Canada.
lcpaul: Good to see you're still hanging in there. Swimming in agapanthus,
still? Do you ever get a frost? Do Juluka/Savuka still exist? I've got two of
their albums.
O Webbed one: It's a good thing I read that whole recipe
through( Swedish Angels). I was actually gonna make the shit! In consequence,
I made two lemon loaves and a lemon cheesecake( hey, I had'em and according to
the laws in my house I hadda use'em) so the freezers full LOL
Spring is finally coming. There's enough heat in the sun that my shed/greenhouse was warm enough last Sat. to work/doddle in. Get out the seed catalogues.
"till" next week( i wish),or tomorrow morning if I'm up early, see you people.
While I'm at it ...
I know I shouldn't give a shit about the inevitable dissing of the Dan accompanying this year's Grammy hoo-ha, but I just can't help it. I have never been one to suffer fools gladly, and so the sheer blithering pin-headedness of it all does irk the living bejeezus out of me. Enough so that as a means of mental self-defense I've generated a revenge-type scenario. While nowhere near as inspired as the celebrated scenario of Amphibious Assault on the HOF ceremonies, this possible-future scenario still manages to put that evil grin of satisfaction on my face. And so I present it to you all, in the hopes that you will find it likewise entertaining.
Scenario Part I: Tomorrow night, Bob Dylan walks off with this year's Album of the Year award, thus making three years in a row that old-school old farts left the young farts in the lurch at the Grammys (Carlos, D&W, and Mr. Zimmerman--what a combo!)
Scenario Part II: D&W bring out their new New One around January 2003--not only does it stealth its way into platinum just like 2vN, but against all odds one or more songs on it sneak into actual multi-week top-10 hit status like unto the glory days of the 1970s (when, in fact, there were volumes of disposable pop-crap jamming the top-40 airwaves rivaling these dismal days).
Scenario Part III: the long-awaited and equally stealthed-out advent of the Old School Neo-Soul Revival (a la Jamiroquai and this new dude Remy Shand) finally takes off in a big way with several high-visibility acts--all of whom, in numerous interviews, proudly state that one of their fundamental influences is none other than Steely Dan.
Scenario Part IV: 2004, the Grammy Awards--the new New One sweeps the top categories again, including Album of the Year. D&W look just as bemused, just as non-Hollywood as ever up there on the podium--but this time there is a modest but vociferous portion of the Staples Center crowd screaming in glee and vindication on their behalf.
Scenario Part V: Various media pundits once again start moaning about how this second Dan sweep demonstrates the continued out-of-touchness of the organization behind the Grammys--but this time a larger collection of pundits take great joy in suggesting where on the nay-sayers' anatomy they have their heads deeply inserted.
Scenario Part VI: D&W quietly retreat to River Sound to do it again, yet again. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Hey, it's my fantasy world, I can do with it what I wanna.
But if Dylan wins Album of the Year tomorrow night, don't say I didn't warn ya!
/the Mam'zelle
putting away her fantasy Nostradamus hat
Just got off the phone with Malcolm Hunter (YGK) and he is fully booked for the New Orleans Jazz Fest 2002 festivities. He wanted me to e-blast on his behalf here....
Which One's Pink: Cabo San Lucas was spectacular. It is considered their "winter time" there now so the water temperature was at a brisk 62 degrees Fahrenheit....as a result yours truly dove with THREE (yes, three) neoprene suits because the water was that cold.....maximum depth reached was circa 80 feet and visibility was not great (30 feet maximum)because the increased boating activity and the unusual churn in the Pacific Ocean while we were there.
Babes elected not to dive because she's so organically Floridian and has been spoiled by diving in warm as bath water with visibility exceeding 80 feet plus (to wit: French Polynesia, Belize, Florida Keys, Cancun, Cozumel, et al.)....she nonetheless took the boat ride along with me which was nice and ended up documenting the dive with some nice photographs above board. I did manage to squeeze off some killer shots underwater of some rather large Moray Eels (I saw Brown spotted, Green, and white spotted)....there were some cool puffer fish, box fish, sea urchins, and dramatic sand-wall drop offs which were amply documented by the late great Jacques Cousteau while researching the lower Baja Peninsula.
Perhaps the most remarkable item to report from the oceanic side of things was the whales. During this time of year, these amazing mammal mammoths make the trek from the Bering Strait all the way down to the Baja Peninsula where they give birth to calves and otherwise spend their time frolicking in the relatively warmer waters of the Pacific Ocean. One can plainly see, just standing on the beach or even from your rooms (if you had oceanfront vistas like we did)whales spyhopping, breaching, and seeing the water/air blasts that spout from their blowholes when coming up for air. This was a truly remarkable sight to behold, especially when one saw their huge tail-fins emerge and then go under again. There were, I believe, up to four or five diffrent species of whales in this area during this time of year: Grey Whales, Sperm Whales, Humpback Whales, and one or two other species as well.
We badly wanted to take a charter flight up north to Magdalena Bay, where the majority of the birthing whales were AND where one could really see this phenomena really play out to the max but we were slow on the trigger and ran out of time....next time we'll know exactly what and where to go to really witness this amazing piece of life play out.
So we opted for the "poor man's" way to see the whales which is to charter a zodiac and head out to the ocean to see what we can catch.....we did manage to see some sperm and grey whales but just as we'd sneak up on one they'd just as fast disappear and emerge far away from our zodiac.... still it was fun and certainly much bettre than spying them standing on the beach...
The food: terrific. Especially the Shrimp and steak. The lobster was so/so. Fish tacos also ruled as did the cold beers and the rhum drinks. We ate at Mi Casa, The Old Trailer Park by the old lighthouse, and at the super swanky and ultra sexy Las Ventanas....there were a few others but I can't remember those now.
The locals were all super friendly too and the time share sharks weren't too much of a distraction as much as they were amusing after seven rhum drinks walking along the pier with all the local artisans showing their arts and crafts....
Also of note were those really prehistoric looking pelicans which were so beautiful to watch soaring in the skies as were the seals whicch park themselves on the rocks just acroos the famous Arch nearby Lover's Beach.
In spite of the emphatic warnings not to swim on the Pacific side of the Ocean (that's versus the Sea of Cortez side) yours truly did on a number of ocassions as shocked tourists and funny lookin' Mexican dudes watched on....the water was refreshing beyond belief.....
I would recommend anyone go there and enjoy, I think we certainly will re-visit although next time we'll elect to go later in the summer months: then one can see while diving Whale Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks and a much wider variety of sea life not around during this time (The sharks are now about 500 miles to the south)....
Thanks again for the tips pal.....

Ducky: Send message to majordomo@dandom.com with "subscribe sd" in the subject line. No quotes.
W1P: Already planning on it. I subscribed to both lists for that very purpose.
Oh yeah, I forgot. Mu -- right on about WB. Funniest man in dandom for sure. I remember once he said something and I almost choked on a piece of pizza. Seriously. Can't remember what was so funny, just remember the choking part.

Hi StAl--
What's the address for signing up for that San Diego email list? Never signed up for that particular one back in 2K, can't seem to locate the info now. Thanks!
/the Mam'zelle
trying to stay on top of the action
St Al, let me also suggest that the message be sent to the LA mailing list as well? Hey Aus, how about a couple highlights from your trip to Cabo Wabo?
Hey gang!
Listen, does anyone out there have a copy of Joe's Garage Acts I, II, II on CD? I know this is illegal, but I've had that CD ripped off from me 3 TIMES. The only disc I'm missing is the first disc and I hate like hell to buy it again for the 4TH TIME. E-mail me if you can help me out. I'll make it worth your while. And no, insurance wouldn't cover it.
Been talking to Hoops and I'm getting ready to send a message to the San Diego mailing list. Many of you are subscribed to it from the Summer 2000 tour, but some may not be. If you don't receive a message from the mailing list within the next 24 hours, please join up! Though I will post details on this GB I've always found these mailing lists were much more effective. If you have any questions about this mailing list please e-mail me.
Rich: Naked Bunch. That's the best SD cover band-name I've ever heard. You don't play naked do you? Would take guts (or something)to do so in Edmonton.
Aus , Everything you have ever written on the yellow has made me stand up and read it??Well done mate that takes some doing bigfella.

Hi Rich of the Naked Bunch - Here's a hello on behalf of three Southern California based SD tribute bands, The Steely Fan Band, Doctor Wu, and ... (name withheld since band has not been officially launched yet ...).
I have a few questions for you Rich. E-mail me, OK? Thanks.
Steviedan -- I agree with those who have mentioned Steven Wright. But I thought that someone would have mentioned Woody Allen. After all, he is a New York native, and also, he had a little "Cousin Dupree" action going a few years back. I figured Woody would be an obvious one. Anyone remember Woody's bit about the deer he ran over and tied to the bumper of his car? Hysterical.
Another comedian I want to mention is Lenny Bruce. Again, a New Yorker, with a drinking and drugging past (and demise ... ala Charlie Freak, sort of). He had a bit that pre-dated "With A Gun" (of course) called "Thank You Masked Man" In this bit "The Lone Ranger" after saving the town wanted to perform a "natural act" with a horse.
Ain't nothin' like some good culture in one's past, Eh?
And finally, to Howard and Bill - how is the search for keyboards going?
Salutations to all ...

See you there!
The only band in your list I have heard of lately is the Israeli one. At last word, they're still very much active on the local Bar Mitzvah circuit. The Taliband was dismantled recently. We used to keep in touch, sure, we were tight. That was then. NOT ANYMORE! Those bastards have booked the Caves of Tora Bora for some time now.

There is plenty of room for everyone, eh?
NO problem with that. In

Make no mistake about it.
Sure, The Steely Damned

Copenhagen band Skeevy Dane? or Diana Krall as a tribute band: Steamy Dame?

was it in Blue someone mentioned the fact Diana Krall was marketed for her

the vocals, of course. In that department, our Stompin' Tom Connors dead

American of all faith and socio-economic status are most welcomed.
Special hello to my friends all over the world, the members of the

Frasier. I'd say Frasier and Niles. SD references such as flaws, mistakes, gloating, the works. And the music is beyond any doubt :-)
Aus, great post on CSNY. Brought back fond waves of nostalgia. First album I ever owned was "After the Goldrush". Always dug Neil Young. Wish I could've been there.
Other "first" albums:

Paranoid - Black

Sticky Fingers - The

Aqualang - Jethro Tull
Led Zeppelin (can't remember the
album title, or number, but the one with "Stairway")
Guess that gives my age away.
Hm. Happens so mr. Vornhagen spent a week on Maui two weeks ago ... wondering if mr. Becker coincidentally passed by the club and caught some snippets ...
yes Steviedan ... negative reviews ... i am now working on mine for Jazz Now and have to be honest. Lucky for me i liked two out of three. Tried to be positive about the one i doubt will ever find its way off any shelf. Anyhow. This one was cool!!! A pre-post ...
Paul Vornhagen û Heart
Paul VornhagenÆs talents cover a wide range from
playing all the saxes (tenor, baritone, alto and soprano), talking flute and
ocarina and charming his audience when his vocals jump into the beat of a Duke
Ellington composition. And it doesnÆt stop at this. The CD ôHeartö presents
four original instrumentals written by Paul Vornhagen. Wake-up Call, Firefly
Mambo, Motor City Mood and Hunker Down. HeÆs a versatile guide in the realms
of bebop, latin-cubano Jazz, bossa nova, samba, cool ballads and straight Jazz
Standards. Quite stylish! To mix and blend these tastes for rhythm and melody
is an accomplishment showing experience, skills and heart. Paul Vornhagen
reels the listener in with his ôWake-up Callö, all the way down this musical
journey until the last track ôHunker Downö. Freddie HubbardÆs ôCrisisö as well
as EllingtonÆs ôCaravanö entice to embrace the funk in Jazz music while it
flirts with hot latin accents making you tap your feet or at least move some
other part of your anatomy. Credits also to Tad Weed (piano, organ), Kurt
Kranhnke (acoustic bass), Peter Siers (drums, timbales), Randy Marsh (drums),
Jonathan Ovalle (congas, bongos, percussion), Nick Calandro (acoustic and
electric bass) and Cary Kocher (vibraphone). Jazz from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
ôMotor City Moodö keeps the engines running for sure and as soon as ôHunker
Downö fades, you find yourselves hungry for more and more and more à Paul
Vornhagen and company must totally thrill your heart when seen live in action!
Stevie my man, Bill Murray, Andy Kaufman? Are those comedians?
I'd go for Manuel (Fawlty Towers), his English (she is more better now).
-Don't mind Manuel, he's from Barcelona.
And Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) of course: -I jumped out of my easy chair...
And his wife, the Cringemaker.
The comedian/SD thing?
How 'bout Steven Wright? Or Dennis Leary?
Gwen, still trying to wiggle out of that thong. Boy, when I get my hands on that freakin' midget!

aus, as usual... and btw, forget negative reviews. there's WAY too much greatness to waste time on panning ineptness. we'll never have time to get to all the beautiful things on this planet, so why bother with the rest ?
incidentally, this is also the philosophy of my friend, the er... jazz critic who also happens to blow his ass off on any sax or flute. sometimes the axiom applies and there are plenty of frustrated musician critics to be sure and worse, rock scribedom is rife with merely frustrated celebrities. as far as teaching goes i am a performer first and always, and my students make me prove that all day long, from lesson one...

I was reading the last page of this morning's life edition of USA Today.
There was a quote from the so-called alleged expert on the Grammys, Tom O'Neil:
"Not a single Grammy voter could quote a lyric from Steely Dan's last album. Don't forget how Grammy voting works: It's not about the music. it's about the artists."
Gee, Mr. O'Neil: How hypocritical have we become? Last year you were sucking to Eminem for his alleged First Amendment rights and not concentrating on the quality of the music.
But in the case of the right Grammy vote, it's about both the artist and the music.
Think about it Tommy.

Dano: "Aus , you always make the gigs sound so good , can you go and see someone you dont like so we can hear the flipside??"
Well mancub, I hear you. Either I'm pickin' the gigs so on the money like or I'm so under the influence that I just don't see the downside. Well, that's not true. If you must know, this past Saturday's gig DID indeed have a downside: As CSN&Y would wind up a particular piece, they overkilled it with ending stanzas which were accentuated by electric guitar noise....you know, like the song never ending and the obligatory battle of guitars ensues. That was way annoying, especially as the night wore on because the Garden started feeling like treblinka with the heat....so as each piece went through its endless end, I found myself wishing during the secondde set that the entire show were done acoustically (which when they DID play acoustic they sounded soooo fuckin' good and the chanse for the Lynyrd Skynrd like endings was basically non-existent). But honestly, mancub, that was about the only negative thing I saw...probably would put most others over the edge but not yours truly.
For what I got that evening, which was: second row centre, a genuinely enthusiastic David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young, some truly timeless classics which were played and sung beautifully [except the ending of a few pieces as detailed in above note, a great crowd, and a truly superb evening after the show as well: all of those added up to your truly as near flawless colour to report.
However, in light of your comments, I shall try to incorporate a more "balanced" review (and therefore be more forth coming in a granular way) in the future especially if there were some mitigating shreds of colour dispersed at all.....
Be well matey!

Went to a Chinese New Year Festival on Saturday evening called the Lantern
Festival. The highlight of the afternoon/evening was a Lantern parade at
sunset. At the beginning of the parade was the traditional Dragon (very
impressive to see in real life.) Then it was followed by all participants,
each carrying a lantern. The Festival was held at a bandstand next to Olvera
Street. So, the parade ended up winding its way through this hispanic area,
where shopkeepers sell their wares to the tourists. Quite a multicultural
contrast and only in LA....
Dean Wurmer: Thanks for heads up on JassFest goodies....counting the days..
This past Saturday night, February 23, 2002, Babes and I caught Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young at Madison Square Garden, New York City. Venue sold out and crowd makeup was what was to be expected....very few young ones but plenty of middle aged ex-hippies...
Band starts on time (8:00 PM Eastern Time), no opening act. Clearly aged but excited to be onstage, the band fires the crowd up with Carry On (from their first and brilliant effort)...they sound Grrrrreat.....Neil Young wearing leather cowboy hat and wailing reminiscent of Steve Howe....follow up with Going Home with Mr. Young controlling.....
Seriously sexy blonde sitting just ahead of us in the front row grooves on her feet pretty much from here to the finish...Pillaging Madness the third piece from the set and followed by Wooden Ships...here the group proves that their harmonisation excellence first introduced to us three decades ago has not really gone anywhere...they do sound phenomenal...Graham Nash, by far the most animated is barefoot for the whole show. Burning candles on either end of the stage atop huge amplifiers provide a cozy and warm milieu....
Later Mr. Stills controlling on Please don't Tell me That You're Saying Goodbye, very well done. The seventh piece is a nifty surprise, Three Miles High...Garden transported to trippy hippy 60's and smell of marihuana is everywhere....entire Garden now singing: "...stop, baby what's that sound? Everybody what's going down!!!!...." Wow. Done in slow cadence.
Neil Young throttles audience after a Nash piece with: Southern Man. Brilliantly done. Southern Cross follows deliciously. Just when you thought they'd break: Mr. Young commands anew with Cinnamon Girl. Your faithful and humble narrator now singing along with the rest of the high crowd.
20 minute break in the action.
They are one person, they are two alone, they are three together, they are for each other to open in acoustic manner.....chills running down my spine....Babes loving it.....Our House from Deja Vu: Blammo. Executed nicely. Mr. Young decides to wow crowd YET again: Old Man....entire Garden singing along....head rush.
Mr. David Crosby and Mr. Nash take it higher with a stunning rendition of Gwennovere (cheque spelling)..voices couldn't be prettier.... HarvestMoon by Neil Young amazing...this cat IS the energizer bunny...his harmonica sounds delightful....next, a Crosby piece unknown to yours truly followed by a Booker Jones piece with Stephen Stills singing. Yet another soulful piece dedicated to the victims of 9/11/2001.
Suite Judy Blue Eyes. Incinerates with harmonies intact after all these years. Next Mr. Young re-emerges with Let's Roll. Long Time Gone, superbly played....The Woodstock song is played to a whupped up and frenzied crowd, then Neil does Keep on Rockin' in The Free World (worst piece in the set)....
Encore: Long May you Run. Steve Potts on Batteries, and Donald "Duck" Dunn played bass guitar....great show.

Bill ~ The Motif is overkill for your needs; the S-80 is a superb keyboard and seems to be a good match. As for the whole organ vs. piano-feel (and multiple keyboards on stage) quandry, here it is in a nutshell:
1. It's entirely a matter of preference. If you grew up playing a piano, chances are you'll probably prefer playing a weighted keyboard. Your wrists compensate for the additional energy needed to get around, and you have a tendency to PLAY as though you were playing a real piano. If you grew up (or learned) to play on an organ, then you'll probably prefer playing on non-weighted keyboard. That said, it is EASIER to get a piano feel out of a non-weighted keyboard than it is to get an organ feel (with glisses, vamps, etc.) out of a weighted keyboard. When I'm composing music, I find that a non-weighted keyboard is superior when attempting to lay down things like subtle string passages, etc. Once again, it's a matter of personal preference.
2. As for multiple keyboards on stage, many players DO still have two or three keyboards on stage...unlike the days of yore when 12+ keyboard rigs (i.e., Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Tony Banks) was not uncommon ~ it was the only way they could duplicate the albums! These days, if you see multiple keyboards, it's generally because the player's rig is a combination of modern and vintage keyboards. You might see a Triton on top of a Hammond B-3, and an S-80 on top of a Fender Rhodes, because, as good as the today's keyboards sound, purists (such as Donald Fagen) prefer the "beautiful imperfections" of the vintage instruments. On the other hand, if you see a keyboardist with ONE keyboard on stage (on a major tour), chances are that he/she has a keyboard tech back/understage overseeing a rack of synths/samplers...making sure that everything is being MIDI'd properly and, in some cases, playing additional parts.
Have fun with your keyboard, and if you have any problems getting the sequencing software to work, please let me know...
Had a great time up in Mammoth, but them caught the flu from hell and have been REALLY sick for a week...I took the anti-bios and seem to be finally getting better today, but the hep c always seems to make these things drag on forever.
Steveedan,
Thanks for your evaluation of the keyboards I listed.
You're probably
right about the Yamaha Motif 8, it is a
pretty big keyboard and probably
heavy too (I did'nt try
to pick it up). Anyway, if you can't utilize all of
it's
functions then there's NO WAY that I would utilize them all.
If
it's too much keyboard for you then it's WAY TOO MUCH
keyboard for me.
I really liked the Yamaha S80. Yamaha seems to make the
best keyboards
in my opinion (but what do I know...)
The S80 seemed to have most
everything that the more expensive
keyboards had and really had a nice feel
to it. Yamaha
seems to wieght it's keys better than the others. I don't
imagine a grand piano would feel much different.
Just one more question...
Considering what you said about "Piano feel"
VS. "Organ feel",
I would think that professional keyboard players would
have
two keyboards no? One that plays like a piano and one that
plays
like an organ? Seems like when I see keyboard players in
concert they're
surrounded by various keyboards. Is this the
reason for that?
Thanks again, I think I'll eventually pick up a Yamaha S80.
fu dang - which hidious post (or posts) are you referring to?
Do you really care what heads-up-their-arses Monkees fans think? I didn't think so.
Steveedan
StAl -- you're a peach.
stevee, you were flamed on that Mojo because that was a hideous post. Terrible. Thanks for setting us Dan fans back 20 years.
*** WARNING, WARNING, WARNING ***
This is going to be a very long post
about keyboards. If you are not interested in this topic, please do not waste
your valuable time.
Just skip past this post. Thank you.
Hi Bill -
It would be my pleasure to offer some advice. First of all, you may recall that Howard Wright is also in the process of shopping keyboards, and he is principally a guitarist (at least I think he is), so you and he might be looking for the same keyboard.
Before I get into this, I want to submit this little disclaimer. This is just my opinion. I am not a keyboard products expert. I am not adept at figuring out how to create my own keyboard sounds. I am just a piano player who loves the sounds of the keyboards used in the music of Steely Dan, and jazz for the most part. The spacier sounds like Pink Floyd and progressive rock is interesting to me too, but I do not use those sounds hardly at all. For me, I just want to be able to plug it in, turn it on, push a pre-set sound button, and start playing.
OK, here we go ? I have hands-on experience with the Yamaha Motif 8, the Yamaha S 80 (I own this one. I LOVE IT !!!), the Kurzweil K2600, and the Korg Triton.
The lead singer for our new Steely Dan tribute band (the person from whom I purchased my Yamaha S 80) now owns the Yamaha Motif 8. It is an extremely impressive keyboard. It is a weighted-key (i.e., it plays like an acoustic piano, not an organ) keyboard. It is a full-on workstation too. It has one of the best feeling keyboards around. The keybed is better than the one on the Yamaha S 80, but I love my S 80. I get a chance to play both keyboards all the time, and even though I can discern that the Motif 8 has a better keybed, I still totally love my S 80. (I know what you?re thinking ? "yeah, but what do you REALLY think?" OK, I?ll tell ya ?)
What I do NOT like about the Motif 8 is that it is way too much keyboard for me. I would never utilize much of what this keyboard can do. Also, the keyboard is HUGE !! The pitch and modulation wheels are located to the left of the keybed, so the keyboard is really long and it is very heavy too. But, if you like to noodle around with programming, and don't move the keyboard around much, this is a phenomenal keyboard. Try to get the price down to around $2,000.
The Yamaha S 80 is also a weighted-key keyboard and a keyboard controller. It has a lot of great pre-set sounds, and is an excellent performance keyboard because you can call up the sounds easily. In this respect, the layout is excellent. You can get to any sound really fast. You already know I love this keyboard. It comes with a lot of Fagen-esque Rhodes sounds, so if you are after that, your search is over. Try to get it for less than $1,350.
The Kurzweil K2600 is a very good keyboard too. Also weighted-key. It has a great keybed. I know that some people will NOT agree with this, but, I am not that impressed with the sounds that this keyboard can make. Kurzweil's keyboards are not easy to program. My lead singer sold his Kurzweil and got the Yamaha Motif 8. He hated the Kurzweil. We both feel that Kurzweil is way overpriced, and we are not all that confident that this company will even stay in business for much longer if they don?t get with the program and figure out what the keyboard market is doing. I would pass on this one.
The Korg Triton is an organ-touch keyboard. The Triton has great sounds and
it has this really big data window that is also a touch panel(I think it is
liquid crystal, or something like that), that is very easy to navigate around
in to get to different sounds. I prefer my weighted-key keyboard because I am
primarily a piano player and (like YGK has said in the past) I really like to
lean into the keyboard when I play. You can't do this on an organ. I don't
know what you should try to get this keyboard for, but my 2 recommendations
are this one and ? yep ? you guessed it ? the Yamaha S 80.
(Did I mention
how much I love this keyboard ?)
I have not played either Roland keyboards. I have a thing about Roland. I have never liked them. Again, just my snobby opinion. Many people love them. They just don't feel good to me (under my fingers, I mean), and I haven't been that impressed with the sounds that I have heard them make.
For more information, go to www.musicplayer.com, and look for the "Keyboard Corner" forum. There is a wealth of information there for you to find. Also, people there will answer your questions with a great deal more information, expertice, and experience than I have. I hope that this helps you. Keep us posted on your search and feel free to e-mail me if you think that I could help you further.

I say, I am in mourning - have my girl hold my calls...
Hey Steely Dudes,
Spent some time over at the local Sam Ash here in NY and
found some
pretty cool keyboards. Maybe some of you
pianists (did i spell that right?
Hope so...) can give
me your 2 cents on the following keyboards.
Yamaha Motif 8 (fully wieghted, My favorite, $2599)
Roland XV88 (fully wieghted, #2 on my list, $2199)
Yamaha S80 (another nice one, $1599)
Kurzweil K2600 (nice but REAL pricey, $3150)
Korg Triton ($2699)
Roland RS-9 (nice, seems affordable at $995)
I liked the Yamaha Motif-8 the best but unless you're
a professional
keyboard player I'm not sure you'd want
to invest 2600 bills in a
keyboard...
Maybe the Yamaha S80 or Roland RS-9 would do the job
for the
average player?
Listen Doc, it's not you who is the jerk, it's AL. I'm sure you've got plenty more healin' in you. Now what have you done with z?
I thought I posted this before, but it mysteriously disappeared.
At this
point, I don't even care who's involved in the conspiracy against me, just get
it over with- I've lived long enough, maybe too long.
This morning, as I
was going to feed AL, I realized someone or something had broken the
otterhound cage open and AL was gone.
He left a note saying he'd gone to
England to go back on tour with Baby Lemonade. And that was it.
I went to
my nearest Tower Records store and searched in vain for some Baby Lemonade
CDs. As I was searching, someone played "Sister Golden Hair" and "Daisy Jane"
by America. I felt tingling in my brain. It felt good.
Then they played "I
Can Read Your Mind" by The Alan Parsons Project and again the same thing
happened, tingling in the brain.
I realized then, that my mission on earth
had not yet ended and all the good that I had done for people like Francis
Farmer, Phil Ochs, Tim Buckley and his son, Donny Hathaway and many others in
the entertainment industry, must go on.
Alright, maybe AL has escaped, but
there are more out there like him who I can still help, all I must do is find
them.
So, don't worry about this healer of broken minds, he is not at the
end of his rope yet, not by a longshot!
Heroically Yours,
Dr. Warren
K.-Healer!
Strangely quiet.

"So I'm visualizing a cute little bunny
With a fluffy white tail and
long grey floppy ears
Who looks up at me and says, Doc don't you worry
All you got to do is, hide in here ... "

StAl -- it didn't work.
Hey SF Bay Area GBers, The Machine, the excellent east coast Pink Floyd tribute band, is coming this weekend! Do yourself a favor and catch their shows this coming Saturday, Monday and Tuesday! Dates and locations below:
Sat February 23 The Mystic Theater Petaluma, CA
Mon February 25 The
Sweetwater Mill Valley, CA
Tue February 26 Great American Music Hall San
Francisco, CA
We went to see them last night at the House of Blues in LA and it was quite good, if lightly attended. I think you will really enjoy their musicianship.
St.Al -- thanks for correcting me. And I still can't get to my email, I login in to oblivion. Please Help!
Snakehips -- my error is probably the reason why you couldn't get to my website.
I wonder if people realize that there are a total of 23 pages of artwork that you can get to by pressing next? Please tell me if you don't so that I can reconfigure the website to make it more accessible. Some of you may already have, but I haven't been able to get to my email. My guestbook is up and now it's working.

Alright, now I'm "persona non grata" around here.
First W1P hits me
with the lawsuit, now St. Alphonse (I bet you he's not even really eyetalian)
hits me with an admission charge- just to post!
I'm sure he has nothing
against the good Doctor- you all probably banded together against me and
forced the poor guy to do it!
That darn evil Oleander- she's probably
behind it! Or Fla.david- I didn't tell him to come up from Fla.- Or that Lisa
G.-she never liked me from the get-go-now we've all got colds thanks to her!
Or those two Netherworlders-if you critcize the work of a bona fide rock
and/or roll genius, that's what's gonna happen!
Well, you people should be
thanking me for AL getting rid of you!
You know what has happened to the
original LOVE band? Dead. All of 'em.
Bryan MacLean even became a Jesus
Freak before he died!
Every LOVE album had a different band behind AL, till
in '92 he just got tired of it and got Baby Lemonade to back him. I'm
currently on the phone with their uh, representative and we're gonna do some
business, if they ever get back to me.
You'll be pleased to know that AL
has regressed back to the snarling beast he was before I injected him with
CCK, but I'll leave you with the lyrics to his best song, "The Red Telephone",
so you can remember him as he once was- not what he's become.
The Red
Telephone
Sitting on a hill-si-ide
Watching all the peo-ple die
I'd
feel much better on the o-ther side-or hitch a ride
I believe in
ma-a-gic,
Why because it is so quick
You don't need power when you're
hyp-no-tized- look in my eyes
What are you seeing?- I see
How do you
feel?
I feel real phony when my name is Phil, or was that Will?
I don't
need the time of day,
Any time with me's o-kay,
I just don't want you
taking up my Time, cause that's not right.
Middle Section
I've been here
once,
I've been here twice,
I don't know if the first's the fourth's or
if the
Fifth's to fix
Sometimes I deal in numbers
And if you want to
count me
Count me out!
Interlude
Life goes on here,
Day after
day
I don't know if I am living or if I'm
Supposed to be
Sometimes I
feel so eerie
And if you think I'm happy,
Paint me black/white! (sung at
the same time)
Chanted: They're locking them up today,
They've
thrown away the key.
I wonder who it'll be tomorrow,
You or me?
They're locking them up today,
They're throwing away the key,
I
wonder who it will be tomorrow,
You or
me?

Oh, paul. You cad! Go on and keep those earrings, baby. You deserve a special gift- and plus, they were far more flattering an accessory than the studs that matched your eyes. And if I might add- were the perfect compliment for the thong we bought off that wierd midget.

NG: Seattle Wireless is a program that's been around for a few years. It's a grassroots effort to share broadband connections with others using wireless technology (802.11b). For more information go here: http://www.toaster.net. Closest place to you is Durham. But if you lived in Durham, you'd probably have high-speed internet. In your case I suppose the only chance you'd have is if you could convince that fancy golf course you live near to share out their T1 line...It's pretty cool stuff really. We use it at Seattle Lighting to connect a couple of close proximity stores together.
I heard some of that interview with Elton. Though I agree I can't help but think it's a bit of the 'ol sour grapes.
That's http://www.clubhiho.com. Not http://clubhiho.com. Technical DNS reasons...
Man I'm getting tired of this freakin' place. I can count on 1 hand the amount of times I've seen the sun stick around for a whole day since October. So Cal wont come a minute too soon. And if The Stranger is reading this -- I STILL wouldn't want to live down there...
Pat
The gallery is still there..

Gwen dahling, gosh, that damn platinum belly ring! I hate to tell you but Andy swallowed it! And lacking the services of a proctologist, I'm reluctant to attempt retrieval. I'm sure you'll understand. On the brighter side, I do, however, hold your green earrings. And the Blue Banana will never be the same again.
Legless Foghorn, look at what happened to Bill!

Floridavid- Two years ago Elton performed with N'Stink on the
Grammys
and now he's changed his tune. WOW! as Ben Stein would say.
Here's a solution: Write or e-mail every artist that is worthy of skill and experience and encourage them to create their own record company.
Rod Stewart and Bowie don't have a deal at the moment, so maybe they can
take advantage and form the company and have only artists, if they are
business savvy, run it. Bowie should be president, considering how
well
he's done on the business scale.
If radio stations refuse to play their new songs, the artists should threaten to pull their old songs of the playlists. Once these stations get the idea, then they'll accept.
What do you think?
What a way to start this Frying Stormy Rainy Day (9.16 am) .. and definitely in a Radio phase again .. switched it on and as if i put the needle on the record, James Taylor started to sing his You've got a Friend ..

Sickly ones I feel your pain. I am now going into week three of a cold, thank God I'm down to hoarseness and a lingering weak cough. Usually I pull out the echinachea root and leaves and make a strong tea adding honey to taste and drink it as hot and as quickly as I can and nip things in the bud, but had none on hand when this started and still haven't gotten any.
I've been lurking, but not posting much because I haven't had much to say and I've been busy working on my website www.clubhiho.com. It's still under construction but I'll let you guys know when it's done.

I was listening to talk Radio news on the way to my Gig tonight. The
reporter quoted Sir Elton John as saying "many of todays artists like Britney
Spears and 'N Sync are really lacking in talent and are keeping
many good
artists for getting the Airplay and attention they deserve".
.....Go
Elton.
neg--grrrrrlfriend!
Jimbo--Masterfully put! What a night, as I think I heard someone say once.
wormy--great! then we may have room to breathe--although I may have to camp out in the tent!
Aja--the spring itch is starting to happen up this way, too, as MC said.
Dragon--nice goin'. I'll be checking in....
Gina--omigosh. I may have gotten behind on the parody posting.... If anyone doesn't see their faves there, e them to me!
Howard--You & Edd can come over & cook at my place anytime.
Hi all,
lp-remember Maslow's Hierarchy-first save your own ass, then everyone elses.....
This hot weather really feels like spring, New Orleans, and TvN! Thank goodness there are no blockbuster names at Jazzfest the first weekend, it'll keep the crowds down to about 50,000 or so! Wormy, got the washboard warmed up, bring some forks and we'll do a duet.
W1P-looking forward to the next meeting, whenever it is!
One day left of the workweek............
Gina-swirl outta here,
Aja
saint al: just curious...do you work for or have anything to do with Seattle Wireless? i was reading an article about the company's campaign for a community wireless network. how cool is that? do i need anything besides a willing participant and an omni-directional antenna? this is my only hope for getting broadband where i live and i would love to know more.
dragon: your website is looking good.
gina: remember this when meeting clas- he will defend you against all enemies, foreign and domestic. he will wait patiently while you take several showers. but don't- whatever you do- let him smoke any weed.
