Here are a few more days worth of posts. Interesting how popular this band remains. Judging from the response these pages have been getting, I'd say its' time for more!

Lucky Henry: You mentioned Jack of Speed(any version). Is there another one besides Re: The Video? I sent him my money a month ago and I haven't received anything...very similar to my Metal Leg subscription. I feel like I should be wearing a big sign on my chest that reads:

"Desperate Dan-Fan...Take My Money...Please!"

I am not ready to yell, "Fire!" at this time though. The tape could show up in my mail tomorrow. (sniff)-(sniff) Does anyone else smell smoke?

San Fran Knight: I am pretty sure that "IF" DF read your message, he understood that you were only being whimsical. However, sometimes in a setting like this, it is difficult to distinguish those small nuances because the absence of vocal inflection, body language, eye contact or whatever. And there are other posters here who clearly appear to be contemptuous of their efforts.

SDWD: Your writing style is very similar to "W" writings that have appeared in the past. They both include extremely heavy use of sarcasm, large quantities of business/legal verbiage and very humoruos content. You also referred to W as "*he*". Perhaps you were trying to indicate the indicate the identity of the author...or perhaps not. BTW, I like the new home page. I appreciate the effort you guys have put into it. It looks great. Thank You.

Rudy: Your graphics make all these pages look excellent. Thanks.

StAl: I found some new and interesting sites to surf thanks to your new cool links. -Gracias-

This is the day of the expanding man (or was, as it's now Monday and I'm back at work): I've had a great Sunday and I thought I'd share a Dan moment or two with you while you enjoy yours. I broke out some vinyl and listened to Aja, scratches 'n all (it's seen a lot of action over the years)... all very atmospheric, lying flat out on the floor with the fans working overtime in the heat, Brian Lara sticking it to the Aussies in the cricket on the telly (just for you Jamaican Dude), Good Queen R in the shower, baby having his siesta, and watching the sunlight through the trees play upon curtains to the rhythm of the Dan and the sound of Donald blowing his police whistle (what make? and, which force? Mr Fogel please), the beautiful drumming and Michael McDonald's dulcet tones in Peg... and then the shower waters stopped and it all became a little blurry... Hey! It's Summer here (let me enjoy it a little won't you - as you enjoyed yours, tours 'n all) and, it seems to me, it's always Summer when listening to the Dan. There's an essential sultry heat about their music and I can't think of any particularly wintry SD songs (any suggestions, apart from DF's Snowbound, etc of course). So if the rigors of Winter are getting to you a little, maybe put on a little Dan.

I like the rhythm, if not the quality, of listening to SD on vinyl. The notion of a side of music will, no doubt, disappear with the ages - though, to me, only through frequent playing does Aja have some sort of greater flow (emotional, sylistic?). Given D&W's fabled quests for perfection in each track, a greater thematic sequence would be tricky - though a while back someone made a good case for Gaucho having overall guiding concept and, of course Nightfly and Karma have their themes (though ironically I think Karma's other qualities suffer as a result) and 11ToW has a distinctly autobiographical feel to it. So, where this is leading? Well, what chance a SD concept album next up? Did the three new tracks fit into a pattern? Anyone?

Anyway, have a great day - upon the hill, under the banyan tree, at Rudy's, tied to the mast(!) - wherever you are. As the sun goes down on these suburban streets and the evening breeze plays through the gum trees (and hey 'Body Heat's' on (again) tonight)...

This brother is free, I'll be what I want to be

Bodacious Cowgirl: Count me in for Brubeck/Metheny et. al.! Mind if I tag along? Besides, it'll give me something else to brag to Murtha about. I've seen Metheny only once before.

Good King Richard: I, too, listened to Aja yesterday--cranked, whilst spending my day just cruisin around in my cool rollin bubble. Great stuff for a balmy day with the top down. Pehhhhhhhhhhhhggggggg....

Major: Awesome! But please don't upload them to the net: someone might mistake me for a keyboard player. While setting up in my studio yesterday, my keyboard stand gave way, sending all 88 weighted keys crashing to the floor, driving a metal locking piece into the base of my board leaving a gash 4 inches across. It missed my neck by inches. Thank the Donald-God it still works. That was a close one.

What's up with Wawa?? In my last three visits to the convenience store chain, I've heard "Ruby Baby" (in Hatboro, Pa.) and today I heard "Goodbye Look" (Mt. Laurel, NJ). Great coffee, even greater tunes. I drank an extra "Big Gulp" while waiting for the song to end.

Webdrone: Looks good... one assumes you're receiving some sort of compensation for your efforts... Not everybody equates sarcasm with Walter... I tend to see more of a combination of cynicism and wit in Walters writings... its just my 2 cents, for what its worth...

My comment regarding the pulse of the guestbook was meant to be a concise way of saying that those of us who frequent this site reside in the tail of a somewhat bell-shaped curve representing a graphical rendering of the spectrum of SD fans, from fanatics (for lack of a better word at the moment) like most of us to those that don't like our boyz... In other words, we are the tip of an iceberg! Myself, if I owned a studio and had the artistic talents that our boyz had, then I'd always have something cookin'... I'd try to balance artistic productivity (driven by demand) with maintaining my own sanity (i.e. do whatever I damn well please).... I guess my point is that we may be our boyz least biased (as biased as we are) conduit to the masses without pro pollsters...

BTW, we all know that you owe your very existence in the capacity of SDWD to us...

good king richard--lp's, right on. without that sense of two-sidedness inherent in lp's, we now have these discs wherein (usually, anyway) the songs get progressively worse and worse as you track through.

besides, with cd's you end up starting over again every time you listen. so if you stop in the middle, the next time you pick the album up, it's back to song one. i have cd's where the last couple of songs haven't seen the light of day in years. at least with cassette tapes, you generally start up again where you left off.

i guess that's what the 'random' function on the cd player is for, but that doesn't exactly lend itself to the 'flow' of the cd either, does it?

lp's broke it up a bit, so often some of the best songs were right in the middle, starting off the b-side. i still love the whole idea of listening to 'the second song on side b,' or 'the last song on the a-side.'

lp friday, anyone?

peace,

rabbit

(Good King) Richard rlongman@dca.gov.au Mon Feb 3 19:03:08 PST 1997

rabbit: you're sooo right!... especially 'the second song on side b'... and after a brief discussion here at work, we decided that the padding used to be the last track on side a and the second last on side b... which just goes to show what great and consistent albums D&W have turned out. Sorry I can't make lp friday, gotta mind the baby while the missus goes to the movies, but will check out a few sides tonight right after '90210' (required viewing... just love Donna's fashion sense, David's hipness and how Brandon gets to snog a different woman each week... they do, however, need more Dan music)

Time Out Of Mind - Indeed!

One of the thing Donald and Walter do best is the twisting of rhythmic phrases, making the “normal” seem unexpected, and the unexpected seem normal. “Keyboard” Magazine did a little article some time ago using “Tomorrow’s Girl’s” as an example of how Donald can sublimely drop two measures and make it absolutely seamless. I find an even more interesting example in “Time Out Of Mind”...

So many pop, and even jazz tunes, are built on powers of two that sections built on 2, 4, 8, 16...etc. bars are considered "normal." At first glance, TOOM seems to adhere to this, yet closer inspection shows lots of curves. I suppose the tip-off should have been the intro. Ignoring the 3/8 pickup on toms and hat, B&F start the song with a 1 measure drum intro. Not two, not four, but one. Only a prelude to the quirks that follow...

Now we get to the basic vamp, a syncopated little 4 bar comp that effectively ignores "1", and locks to "1&". While the phrase itself is the "standard" 4 bars, Donald pulls a fast one on us with the vocals. It's not unusual to have a few "pickup" notes that intro a melodic episode (like the first 6 notes of "Reelin...") but the pickup phrase (“Son, you better be...”) occurs in bar one of the four bar phrase, throwing us off balance as the start of the phrase now seems to be in measure two. Just to keep it interesting, this wierdness repeats only once before the B&F throw us another curve, and it’s not one, not two, not even three, but four rhythmic twists! (Now how much would you pay?) Not only are the phrases trimmed to two bars (twist 1) while retaining the “pickup notes in measure one” thang, but the chords are now repeating only the last two measures of the original phrase (twist 2). Now the song seems to be wrapped up in some sort of demented game of catch-up with itself. Adding to the starboard list, these phrases are repeated three times (twist 3) before tossing in an extra measure (twist 4) which contains, of all things, the pickup notes to the next two bar phrase which is at this point entirely baffling. (Who’d have expected the usual?) Again a two bar phrase is repeated 3 times before we appear to get some sort of resolution as the vocals break into the “Time Out Of Mind...” refrain. Finally, it seems, all is right with the world. Wait! There’s that damn pick-up (“I am holding a...”) in measure one of the second verse.

What is going on here!!! If we count out the apparent 4 bar phrases starting from the beginning (again ignoring the 3/8) everything seems cool if we accept the odd vocal phrasing. Cool, that is, until we get to the part about chasing the dragon, where we find ourselves chasing our tails having mysteriously picked up a measure relative to the vocals. Don’t worry about it. Everything returns to its’ original state by the time we start the second verse. (Notice I didn’t say “returns to normal”.)

Our second option is to use the vocal intro (“Son, you better be...”) as a pickup, and measure our four bar phrases from there. This seems much nicer (you have to ignore the instrumental intro but, hey, peace of mind has a price) until we get to the dragon (draggin’?) part where now we’re either two measures early, or two measures late. None of which matters because by the time we get to the second verse we’re all sync’d up again. My suspicion is we could start counting someplace in “Gaucho” and things would still collapse and revive themselves.

At this point I am absolutely terrified to start work on the instrumental section. There are monsters in those measures, I’m sure.

I can’t help wondering if the title of the song doesn’t somehow allude to this. Could “out of mind” be an allusion to “insane”? This would give us “Time Insane” and then it’s not a far stretch to “Rhythmic Insanity.” Brubeck used this type of punning during his metric experimentations (“Unsquare Dance”, “Take Five”, etc.) and, of course, he shows up in Donald’s next release.

Joe Murtha JGMurtha@aol.com Wed Feb 5 09:34:14 PST 1997

Edd,

Your "Time Out Of Mind" dissection could not have been more, well, timely. As a result of the recent discussion about the master of time signature experimentation himself, Dave Brubeck - (brought on by Fezboy's fortuitous weekend encounter) - I went back and re-read the liner notes from Brubeck's momentous "Time Out" LP. There is a rather enlightened discussion of each and every tune with regard to their unique timing pattern and what is significant about each.

Before Brubeck, most of jszz was stuck in basic 4/4 time. Although jazz was both harmonically and melodically sophisticated, it was relatively backward rythmically. Some exceptions being the work of Max Roach and a few others. The 4/4 time having been derived from jazz's roots in marching band music and the blues.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Don+Walt are not only "mad about Brubeck", but have applied a good deal of Brubeck's ground work in advanced time signatures to their own material. Maybe "Time Out" (Of Mind) is their tip of the hat to Brubeck's "Time Out"...

Thanks for the erudite post Edd. It was much good food for thought...

Joe

P.S. Fezzy, any mention of other East Coast Brubeck appearances?

fezzy bermuda@magicnet.net Wed Feb 5 10:40:42 PST 1997

Joe: Brubeck went straight to Europe to do a tour and said he would be back in time for a spingtime tour of the East Coast - sounds promising! If you get a chance, definitely check him out.

Ladies and Gentlemen, a drum roll please...

Steely Dan has a featured "corner" in this month's Columbia House CD Club selection catalog, on page 15. Check it out! This is the first time I'm aware that the boys have gotten this lofty honor from the nation's premier music buying ponzi scheme. They've had a few choice offerings featured in the past, but this time each of their studio albums, AIA, the expanded Gold album and the Citizen boxed set are all included, as well as a picture of the dynamic duo in what appears to be good spirits.

Congratulations Don & Walt! Forget the numerous awards, gold records, etc. This event proves you really have arrived in show business.

Sittin' and Listenin': we thought Wet Side Story might have something to do with photography, because a darkroom is typically divided into a "dry side" (where the printing is done) and a "wet side" (where the chemical processing is done). Hmmm....

DrMu andfourtogo Thu Feb 6 13:12:36 PST 1997

JoeM: Great analogy with Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT. It's probably the gold dard for rhythmic experimentation. In my favorite, Three to Get Ready, there is an initial exposition of 12 bars in 3/4. Then the theme is repeated and the song goes from 3 bars of 3/4 to 3 bars of 2/2 (or is it 1 and 1/2 bars of 4/4?) This is repeated 3 times. It gets a bit more complicated after that for me, but it's way cool.

I thought that one of the musicians out there might be able to explain another surprise. The 2 chords which summon Bob Sheppard's sax solo after the 2nd verse of Book of Liars. It seems to come way out of left field but it's perfect. I was absolutely stunned the first time I heard it (and really every time)

Steve Cox a440@voy.net Thu Feb 6 15:38:44 PST 1997

EDD COTE!: Your excellent observations set me to pondering some of w+d's other quirky musical habits. One of my favorites is in "I Got The News". It's based in C, but at the end of the first verse and chorus, for a grand total of 1 bar, the key temporarily goes to D and we hear Dmaj7, Ab7, and Gmaj7. Normally, a 5ma7 chord doesn't lead to a 1dominant chord, but it sure does in this tune! Maybe since they are in D momentarily, and the Gmaj7 is actually the 4maj7 of that key, might be the reason our ears get fooled into thinking its really a 4 chord instead of a 5. Or, are we still in C, and we're hearing a version of 2(7)-5(7)? (In this case, 2-#5-5? Except the first and third chords are Maj7 and the second one is Dominant7, keeping F# constant as the top note of all three chords! This stuff keeps me awake at night and we're talking one bar here. BTW: The drummer on I Got The News was Ed Greene. He lives here in Nashville now and a guitar player friend of mine is involved in some recording with him. I couldn't resist; I had my friend get his autograph. It says: " TO COX, HERES TO A GROOVE! ED GREENE" Very cool...

This is a reference to Miller's (a cognitive psychologist) research on "chunking": We can remember a long strings of digits for eg if we "chunk" them into pairs or triplets. And seven (plus or minus 2) is the average number of "information chunks" we can manage to hold in short-term memory.

Boy am I bored today or what.

Air Jordan's got too much air in his 'ead, he's too busy worryin' about what promotion he'll do next, he'll get sick of Rodman and/or Rodman will do something Rodman-esque before the season's over. The safe bet is to bet against the Bulls.

they will go down in flames via, yes, the "coached-by-a-34-year-old-PatRiley-protege" Van Gundy Knicks. And New York will Rule Once Again. (The announcer says, "The Yankees Win, Theeeeeeee Yankees Win.")

Hanging askew off the vacant chair in front of the monitor is a well-worn sweatshirt that reads simply "Fuck Off, I'm The Major". The camera then begins to close the distance to the monitor and we see that someone has written ON the screen with what appears to be black magic marker. The words are shaky, but legible: "Eschew Obfuscation" ...then, with a quick turn the camera reveals the source of the wind - the room's window is full open...resting under the sill is an antique porcelain sink, and a twisted 3-iron...

"King Of The World" is one of my faves from D&W's early catalog, I'd love to hear it live.

Given that the only indication of a synth being integrated into the current show is Donald's Lynx (which must be MIDI'd to something, but damned if I know what), it would be all but impossible to reproduce that gorgeous portomento synth solo. A rework is always possible, but that solo is just so much a signature of the tune...

Edd

P.S. If anyone has a 4-op FM synth (DX-21, 27, 100, TX81Z, not fb01) and wants a pretty good patch for that solo, I can provide the sysex...

Mind you, Erskines thirds on the snare during the second bridge of 3WM on AIA were fucking incredible. There is way too much in each song to break down. Relax guys and feel it through.

News Flash- my contacts @ MoFi say they are working to do 180gram vinyl 1/2 spds of the rest of the Dan catalog(even though it's all now in digitally remastered form)and are actively pursuing their quest- now that MCA has abandoned their audiophile vinyl effort(sans Who's Next 180g-has it's moments over other pressings, but overall not transcendant- like say the MCA Audiophile pressing of Gaucho-blows any other Dan pressing(in terms of sound "quality")of any album out!). Who knows - if the get Gary Katz, The Immortal, and Steve Hoffman(best mastering man in the business)together maybe there are some untapped nuances of brilliance remaining in some of the old material. And for those who don't know/remember what a turntable is anymore......... Kamakariad 32bit mapped gold CD is a must for any Dan.

What makes Steely Dan interesting for me is the fact they stand up to the disection. I find most pop music to be shallow and uninteresting aural pablum, whereas Steely Dan has some depth. (They're not alone in this aspect, but this forum is about them.)

You speak as if "super technical" and "disection" were somehow diametrically opposed to "fun." You're entitled to that opinion (if in fact it is your opinion), but I disagree. I find the two inextricably linked.

Music that makes me think *is* fun.

pppaulccc--gotta concur with edd there. as a fellow 'dissection freak,' i think that's one of the things that makes dan so cool to listen to for me--they do things outside of the traditional, boring pop format--things that are actually worth thinking about and trying to understand. and that means breaking it down, and trying to figure out *why* it sounds so cool.

on the other hand, another reason they are so brilliant is that they can be enjoyed on so many levels. they somehow manage to fit their incredibly complicated musical ideas so smoothly into that pop format, that sometimes it's difficult to notice how weird what they are playing actually is.

if you don't enjoy the 'musical analysis game,' just tune us out. but at least humor us sometimes, howabout? just smile and nod, smile and nod.................

'deacon blue' on the radio here at work. very cool.

now the *reason* that song sounds so cool, is..........

No, you don't have to be in the musical anaylsis game to appreciate Steely Dan, however, those of us can analyze the music find DEEPER PROOF of their musical genius, and marvel in their mastery.

So Paul, chill out on that tip, or try to learn something...

My, oh, my...

Edd and Rabbit, I see your point and your politeness is duly appreciated. Thank you.

I have some thoughts though. Music, left brain. Cognitive reasoning, right brain. But what about the spirit, the soul? An F-sharp or a chord, through a violin or a digitally enhanced, synthesized wingbeat of a hummingbird? The mind is a terrible thing to waste. What's your natural frequency, man?

YGK: you wrote, "Applause to the rabbit. Pete "SteelyGod" Fogel: Just stopped by to catch up and knew before your 2nd post that you had not been stumped! Wondering if you got my last e-mail and your non- reply meant my alluded to fears were, alas, valid. In any event, I'll be calling you soon to get some background info on an old live SD video of Reelin', and Do It (w/Palmer on lead vox!) I've had murky black and white kinescopes of the "Reelin'" portion for some time now, but the video I'm about to be shown is in color and (more importantly) in complete stereo! If you know anything about it, please share!!!! (I think my friend said it was from The Midnight Special. Is that possible???)

EEEED Cote: "King of the World" is one of two new additions to The Steely Damned's repetoir! One of my biggest complaints so far is, you guessed it, the sound we're getting for the "solo" section. (I'm even less impressed with our patch for the synth part that plays during the short-wave-backed middle section that follows) I am expecting to acquire a Nord Lead synth soon for the very purpose authentically recreating parts such as these, but until that happens I would LOVE to try out your patch for the DX-100! I have no idea how Systems exclusive data tranference (same as "dumping"?) takes place. Please let me know. Any help would be majorly appec.

No Cal SD fans: The Steely Damned has just confirmed a SAN FRANCISCO show at one of SF's premiere music venues: The Great American Music Hall! The date is set for Sunday, March 2nd. Tickets will be $12.50 If you need any additional info please feel free to call The Rockola Hotline @ 619 558-1966 (starting Thursday afternoon) or e-mail me.

LH: Thanks for the info! Sorry to take so long to do so, my life is changing in extreme ways, and it's fucking up my sense of time. Joe Murtha JGMurtha@aol.com Thu Feb 13 07:15:36 PST 1997

San Fransisco Knight,

My Chick Corea recommendations would include some stuff from Chick's early days with Miles Davis ("Filles De Killamanjaro", "In A Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew"); one or two from his "Return To Forever" days ("Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy"); Chick's all-time classic "Leprican" which features the phenomenal Chick composition "Spain" (this one's a requirement IMHO; and my absolute favorite Chick recording, the self titled "Chick Corea Akoustic Band" set. This one contains another stupendous version of "Spain" and features the incredible drumming of Dave Weckl along with John Pattitucci on bass. I was lucky enough to catch this trio live as "The Akoustic Band" several years back and they were fantastic. This same trio morph's into "The Elektric Band" on occasion and they have several recordings out. I'm not particularly impressed with the "Elektric Band" configuration though. Just my own personal taste.

That's my $0.02,

Joe

Paul: 1)Firstly, you write like an Objectivist - which would give me cause to applaud YOU! (If that indeed were true)

2)If you want to read some of my more spiritual posts, check the archives. I don't need to prove my capacity for soulfullness, or spirituality to you. However, I've written eloquently at times about AJA, and before that, the helpful guide to diggin' Kamakiriad. I've written passionately at times, although not as beautifully as Edd did recently. I'm concretely aware of soul and spirituality.

3)Music is a whole brain activity.

4)I AM seeing a shrink - but not because of you. Don't take YOURSELF too seriously.

5)The more you write, the more you reveal, and you sound a little "mushy", which doesn't fit in with your alleged Objectivist leanings.

However, Whatever. The End.

Of course... Corea's "Spain" appears on "Light As A Feather". And thanks for the spelling correction on " The Leprechaun" as well. I still highly recommend "The Leprechaun" though. And the "Spain" on "The Chick Corea Akoustic Band" set is superior to the "Light As A Feather" version IMHO.

Here's a useless but fun thing to do. If you're a fan of the Dan and The Band (and you should be), then you probably like the songs "My Old School" and Jupiter Hollow". Well, the two songs can be sung together, up to a point; their tunes are so similar, I can only assume that even Robbie the Great emulates those Steely Dan fellows. If you kick in with "....I remember.." right after Levon Helm sings "..Jupiter hollow..", the tunes merge; they could even be sung as a round at campfires. Unfortunately, the tunes depart for a while and don't re-unit until "..living in another world/...I'm never going back,".

I believe there's a more meaningful cosmic connection between the two greatest North American rock groups. A mutual love interes or something. Anybody know the details?

(Good King)Richard: "THE FIX IS IN and now I'm a witness"...I did finally receive my copy of the Re: The Video. It arrived about a week ago and it was definitely worth the wait. The day it arrived I decided to sample some "Gospel Candy" and view it several times. GREAT NIGHT. The video and sound is top notch work. I have already copied it to audio tape and it came out perfect.

Who were the posters that said Krantz sucked? He is a fine musician. He seems to be more of a rock guitarist than jazz player though. Physically he looks like a cross between the early Neil Young and the '80's Eddie Van Halen. His solo on Glamour Profession was very interesting.

LuckyHenry: You were right about Donald's keyboard work on Jack Of Speed. Amazing. Under those red lights, with that sinister music Donald could pass as Satan's personal minstrel or perhaps The Devil himself.

Nobody posted on Friday or Saturday? That must be a record. We need more postings on the weekends...parodies, detailed musical observations or even more U.S.A./Sweden put-downs. PLEASE...

M.E.

P.S. Now that I have "the video" perhaps I should keep looking for issue #27 of that fanzine I paid for...

Does anyone know if Brian Sweet is still around? Maybe he would be interested in starting up the "zine" again or something. I think "Reelin'" is first-rate because he writes intelligently about the band and their music. You won't find any fluffy crap like Rosie Vela's diet secrets in his book.

I must agree with M.E., that video is boss! But I've got to tell you, the video (from the board) I have from 93 BLOWS this one away! And Krantz? Come on! Zingg plays circles around that guy (how did they choose WK anyway? From a hat?). He may look like Eddie Van Halen, but the comparisons stop there.

I would also like to see Brian Sweet start up that zine again, since I was unaware of it until it was too late. I've seen the ones on the web, but when are they going to be updated? Sweet's book is another story. Although it was enjoyable reading, it was just a compilation of articles from the last two decades. From the sound of things, W&D didn't give him the time of day. Intelligently written? I think the appropriate term is intelligently RE-written.

Metal Leg the Dan fanzine was way much better under Fogel & the other guy than when Sweet did it. Sweet had no connections and was stuck in England and just regurgitated rumors from the states. Pete was in the heart of NYC during Fagen's comeback and knows all the musicians and went to all the shows. His version of the fanzine also had a great sense of humor(like Rosiee Vela diet secrets, Donald Fagen computerized psychological profile, etc.) vs. Sweet's which was pretty dry. If anyone should start the fanzine back up, it should be Pete.

I would actually be disappointed if D&W felt that way. It is because he worships Duke, and Duke did not respond to the Dan?

JM JGMurtha@aol.com Tue Feb 18 07:42:53 PST 1997

San Francisco Knight,

No doubt Wynton is an exceptional musican and is impassioned about spreading the word about the music. The trouble a lot of folks have with Wynton is his distaste for anything non-traditional and/or experimental. He's become a straight-ahead jazz zealot who can't tolerate the contributions of certain individuals especially as it relates to free jazz and fusion jazz. He berates his brother Branford for juxtaposing jazz elements with pop and rock elements and playing with non-jazz musicians. He all but dismisses anything by Miles after 1968. He has assumed the position as world spokesman on jazz correctness.

Don't get me wrong, I think Wynton has done a great service to us all by making traditional (bebop) jazz an important idiom once again but, man, lighten up already... Without the jazz fusion experimentations of Miles, Corea, Hancock, Shorter, et. al we would not have The Dan, who thrust into main stream pop radio in the early 70's armed with a plethora of latent jazz and jazz fusion sensibilities. So maybe this is where D&W part company with Wynton? Who knows.

BTW: If you haven't heard Wynton's "Live At Blues Alley" with Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums, I highly recommend this one. For anyone who feels that Wynton can't blow with the best of them, check this one out!

Joe: at the end of Wynton's distaste list, you need to add the words "or white": he apparently doesn't believe any "legitimate" jazz can come out of a honky.

YGK .. Tue Feb 18 09:35:34 PST 1997

As I restrain myself from overheating over the Wynton thing, I just must say that although Wynton is "technically proficient" in his playing, what I consistently hear is lacking from his music is his soul. Sure, sure, he can blow over changes, but where the fuck is his VOICE?

Oh yeah, he's also a bigot.

And all of this from a deep honky.

YGK

San Francisco Knight jim@businessmonitor.co.uk Tue Feb 18 10:07:19 PST 1997

Ummmm!

Some interesting points raised above...

A mixture of resentment and pseudo respect. I have only witnessed wynton as himself through one of the kid workshops he did for the BBC over here in London. Interestingly enough, the two pieces he used to analyse form were 'I got rythym' by GG and 'Night & Day' by IB. Now, these two guys are not top on my black list of writers.

Before you think that, being the BBC it would have a white focus anyway, the audience, kids obviously, were quite a mix of origin, most of whom could play to some level.

So, although it does not negate the black/white thing, it does illustrate his feel for using identifiable, and certainly influencial pieces. I mean Night & Day was written for Fred Astaire, who's movies usually featured those of ethnic origin as flunkies or dumb waiters. Totally un PC.

With reference to JM, I must admit that I have not heard anything on the fusion side from him either and you are probably correct in that he may be a 'trad snob' which would be disappointing. I also agree with you on the other artists that you mentioned. Although, I have never liked Miles D's sound at all. Mind you he was a funny guy!

what does wynton make of woody herman, in my view the jazz band meister. If you do not have it, Woody's Winners, recorded at Basin Street West, is the ultimate in bomb dropping horn feel. It has all the classics, Greasy Sack Blues, Woody's Whistle and Opus de Funk. Love it, shite album cover though...

Oh, no! Bad news in "Brooklyn"...

Odd as it seems, today I purchased "Can't Buy A Thrill" on CD. (I've been listening to my vinyl and the tapes I made of it for only a quarter century, and it was only $6 new... go figure.)

Anyhow, I was interested in hearing the "newly remastered" cuts, so I pushed the amp into Class A, bolted on the Sennheisers and cued up my fave track from the album, "Brooklyn."

I love the way the track aurally "opens" when the backup-vocals come in for the second chorus, but listen closely during the final chorus. "Brooklyn Owes The Charmer Under Me" is repeated four times (2 iterations of 2) and then just as the instrumental "outro" begins you can here "Brook/click" on beat one. Someone fell asleep and started the chorus a third time.

Three explanations I can think of: (1)Some bu-voxen got lost and mistakenly started another chorus or (2) the backups were "flown in" from someplace else and someone misplaced the mute button or (3) at somepoint after the vocals were tracked it was decided they would be cut after the second iteration and again somebody didn't hit the mute button in time. (I know I hear the the word "Brook...". I believe I hear a click after it that ain't part of the percussion track.) I lean toward #2.

Any of you other analytical types hear it? And can you hear the one point where the rhythm guitar is simply TOO EARLY?

I will try the Brooklyn thing tonight.

By the way, is there a particular affection for King of the World on this page? It has seemed to be mentioned quite a few times over the last few days.

I am not too keen on that one myself. I'm not sure why, but it is one of the very very few Dan songs that I try to avoid. Am I missing something?

Hey, more interesting facts about Wynton. having dinner last night with a saxophonist friend of mine who told me a story he heard when in the British Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Apparently, the Cardiff (Wales) Philharmonia had asked Wynton's agent if he would perform with them in a classical festival.

The request was then retracted when Wynton's agent stated the fee would be Ģ15,000 for the night.

Now Ģ15,000 as a session fee, rock-jazz performance or maybe a run of shows would be cool, but to assume that the Cardiff Philharmonic would stump up that kinda cash would more or less guarantee that he did not perform for them.

That is not a cool Wynton point. Just to add to his shit list.

Cheesed me off when I heard that one.

Yeah, happy birthday Walter!

Well, there's some new additions to my page. Along with some photos, there is a new game for you to play called "Guess the Guest Guitarist" (say that 3 times fast). The object of the game is to guess which guitarists appear in the hidden pictures with Donald and/or Walter. You get a few hints, and if someone correctly guesses all of the players (in the first try), they may or may not receive a prize. According to the rules on the page, I was going to put the pictures up when the first person answered correctly, but instead, just keep track of your guesses, either here, or through me, and I'll post the pictures and answers sometime soon. If everybody digs this game, we'll try to get Vanna White to help turn the photos next time.

Edd: You have a really keen ear. I can verify that the extra "Brook-" does appear on the original vinyl as Moray Eel suggested. This happens just before the end guitar solo which sounds like Denny Dias along with Skunk on pedal steel in the background. Perhaps originally the song was recorded with the "Brooklyn owes the charmer under me" line repeated to fade out. Then they decided to finish with the guitar work to fade out instead. The the rest of the vocals could have been edited out at that point with the finals Brook- left on their by accident or on purpose - I don't know. I think that this album was recorded fairly quickly (2-3 weeks?).

If you're running as hard as you can to the nearest YMCA to piss off of the second floor, given your age and physical condition, your heart would pump about 22 liters of blood per minute. You would also consume about 3 liters of oxygen per minute doing that (or 4.29 grams of oxygen or 8.34 x 10exp23 molecules per minute).

Outside Sweden: 1 Gigameter = 1,000,000,000 meters; 1 Megameter = 1,000,000 meters; 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters; 1 centimeter = 1/100 meter

The name of Bruce Hornsby came up earlier today. Here's a clipping I found awhile back:

"Hornsby was asked for a list of dream collaborators. Only one came to mind: guitarist Mark Knopfler. . .Jazz/pop fusionists (sic) Walter Becker and Donald Fagen aren't tempting because 'they're into jazz on a technical level, not on an attitude level,' claims Hornsby. . ."

A few people have referred to this Guestbook as Ego City. Well, here is your chance to boost your ego . I have several questions that I have been unable to answer and I am seeking input from anyone. The Letterman rules apply...please, no wagering.

1. Donald has stated that there are several mistakes on the cover of The Nightfly. Can you name any or all of them?

2. How did Jeff "Skunk" Baxter really get his nickname? Was it from not changing his socks(as he claimed)? Or an incident with an outdoor critter(as I believe Denny claimed)? Could it have been his preferred kind of smoke?

3. What are YGT and YGTII about? I can usually get a general idea of what most of their songs are about but these two really perplex me?

I have a couple more questions, but I think I will save those for another rainy day.

Pete petefogel@asan.com Fri Feb 21 01:01:04 PST 1997

I had a great original band tonight at Le Bar Bat called Stir Fried. They featured Tim Kaye (the son of Thomas Jefferson Kaye, who you may know as an artist that recorded some of Donald and Walter's early songs), and Buddy Cage, the pedal steel player from the New Riders of the Purple Sage. They had a major Grateful Dead/San Francisco sound happening. Anyway, if you ever hear of these guys playing, you should check them out!

Moray Eel, pretty good, but no cigar. So far, no winners yet, but a lot of close ones. I can see now that you guys are pretty good, so wait till the next one, I'll make it much tougher. BTW, you can't see the pictures because no one has won the game, the broken icons are supposed to be there. I'll post the pictures and answers in a week or so.

Edd Cote eddcote@ultranet.com Fri Feb 21 03:55:37 PST 1997

The most obvious faux pas on the cover of "The Nightfly" would be the placement of some of the objects, most notably the microphone and the Sonny Rollins album cover.

The microphone is placed such that the cable runs *towards* the announcer, not over the back of the desk. Worse, since he's in a corner, the cable now runs between him and the exit.

The album cover is on the far side of the turntable from the announcer, meaning he'd be constantly reaching over the platter, certainly a dumb thing to do in a studio.

YGK: Pulp Fiction is an American movie? Anything you say baby, but is it North or South American? Ha ha! IQ. But do me a favour, ask our Travola (not Rockola) our famous swedish actor, what country Pulp Fiction is made in. I get so damn tired of you kids... didīnt you go to school?

And who the hell is Walter?

Kids; there must be another forum for your infantile babbling...

About Hornsby; I sad I was dancing to him the other night. "Hot House" and " Harbor Lights". It is so fucking good music, I understand what he meant what he said about Steely Dan. They can NEVER rock and swing and let go like mr. Hornsby. I saw him live in Stockholm a couple of years ago. Incredible. Funniest line- "..we know you're smokin' wherever you are." Dumbest line-"Brooklyn owes the charmer under me."--Sonny Bono could have written that one. Best line: "I don't have the heart to lose another fight. Until my ship comes in, I'll livenight by night."

Re: the question of mistakes on the Nightfly cover, one can discern New York (N.Y.) and Long Island (L.I.) phone nos. in the open matchbook (on the album cover at least). Not unusual for a New Yorker like DF to have such a book, but a peculiarity when possessed by a purported Baton Rouge d.j.

balinese cowboy Sat Feb 22 12:52:16 PST 1997

spur: the nightfly is not a baton rouge d.j. "hello, baton rouge" refers to the Nightfly taking an on-air phone call from a caller from baton rouge. kinda like larry king, but of course not as much as a dick as mr. king.

spur Nightfly note Sat Feb 22 13:58:50 PST 1997

balinese cowboy: Thanks for the interpretation of "The Nightfly". That the d.j. is acknowledging the caller's 20 (rather than saying hello to his local audience) certainly makes sense. Good point.

The matches may still be out-of-place, as I'm still steered toward thinking that WJAZ would lie in the South, given the reference to Mt. Belzoni. The only Belzoni that comes to mind is in the Mississippi Delta blues country and sits between Jackson, MS and Indianola, MS. I think it's pronounced "Belzona" by the locals. The region has as much musical heritage as anywhere one can think of, and maybe DF's giving a nod to blues's (and jazz's?) roots. On the other hand, to imagine anything there could be called a mountain is fanciful. Maybe there's another, obvious Belzoni somewhere. Or, maybe the fictional tale can't be located at all, with the references being metaphors or being inside jokes for DF's friends. In any event, another great musical short story from Mr. Fagen.

Thanks again.

Well, yesterday (saturday) my wife helped me here at work and she was standing in the other room at the signmakermachine and I was out here in cyber, looking around a little (she thought I was working too). Suddenly sheīs standing behind my back and ask what I was doing. So, I had to show her around a little, Erics graphics, River Sound Studio and Pete Fogels Homepage. When we came to mr Fogel she screamed; - Isīnt that the guy who tried to sell us some newspaper when we where on our way in to see mr. Fagen at Lone Star? - Sure is, I said. Itīs a wonderful person, I know him very well. We are pals. - But isīnt that a big step, selling newspaper on the Central Park South area to become famous and have an own HomePage? She looked at me with her big blue eyes, - Why donīt you have an own homepage darling? - Well, I said, remember one thing here, he lives in USA, you can be whatever you want there. You can take pick any person you want, any homeless, any crackbaby in Inglewood and say -Hey you can be the President! And this life we have here in Sweden is only temporary. I promise, someday we end up in Malibu or Fifth Avenue, I promise baby.

Then I had to show her this guestbook, meet my friends YGK, R.O.C.k. in America, and when she read his post she laughed ( get a clue, get a grip swedish pissboy). And she was laughing at ME.

Under normal circumstances I check the GB daily. Usually I'd catch something like that within hours of the post and would quietly remove the offending article. I've done it before.

You see, dickheads like that thrive on the response that is generated from successive posts. ESPECIALLY if it angers someone.

To imply that is was CLAS is ridiculous. Before any accusations occur may I suggest you get the facts FIRST!!!

Also, you may want to check out the changes I've made to the Sign in Stranger Archive Page. No big deal really, just made it a little easier to view some of the more recent posts than downloading the entire months posts.

One last thing.

dug Bad Sneakers over the weekend. I have come to the conclusion that Mike McDonalds backing is fucking fantastic and is what really kicks on that track.

the way he cuts in with the line "going (or is it gone) insane" second verse and once again after guitar refrain, fucking brilliant. He almost takes the total emphasis of Fagen's line and then hands back the line having made the point.

Brilliant production of vocals their.

Like when your arguing with your wife and need to really stress the fundamental points. That is what he does there!

I've been humming it all day. Good to be re-introduced into the brilliance of another track that I have not been paying enough attention.

Spur: I've always imagined Mt. Belzoni to be one of the smaller Catskills. When I was a youngster, the family would make a pilgrimage once a year from Chicago to New York to see the grandfolks. My Dad's parents lived in the city, while my Mom's parent's live up on a hill just north of Pleasantville. From the front yard, you could gaze westward across the Hudson to the foothills of the Catskills. On top of one of those mounts was an array of radio and TV antennae. The location was ideal for broadcasting across the tri-state area. Being away, at that time, from the glow of the city the nighttime view of the blinking lights was spectacular.

San Fran Knight: EXACTLY re: Bad Sneakers. McDonald's vox are brilliant. That's why the song will never feel like it does on the record when it's done live (unless, of course, Mr. McDonald shows up). It sounded good on tour this summer, but even despite changing the phrasing on the bridge, the girls' voices were just too 'nice' to give it the intensity I was hoping for.

Donald's lead is also perfect in this song.

Joe Murtha JGMurtha@aol.com Mon Feb 24 10:07:14 PST 1997

SFK: Agree whole-heartedly on the Mike McDonald comments above. I would also add that Mike's "Broadway Duchess, darlin' if you only knew", etc. from "I Got The News" followed by Don's excellent "What I hear, may be true", etc. followed by Becker's BRILLIANT guitar solo would not have worked sooo well without Mr. McDonalds bold vocal intro. I also think the live "Peg" is left wanting for Mike's emphasis on the main theme. Mike's vocals are such an integral part of any Dan song in which he appears that it just isn't the same song without him IMHO.

Coltrane recommendations: (2) absolute musts...

1. Love Supreme - Elvin Jones will blow you away!

2. Giant Steps - Classic... B&F parodied the liner notes from this one for "Katy Lied".

Here's an easy way out of Miles dilemma, and an opportunity to indulge a desire for Coltrane: Try and dig up anything by Miles and his stellar quintet/sextet which recorded between '55 and '59, most notably, Kind of Blue, 'Round About Midnight, or Milestones. That way you get the added bonus of hearing alternately Bill Evans, Red Garland or Wyn Kelly as well as Cannonball Adderly. These have to be some of the all-time stellar jazz line-ups since Bird, Bud and Diz shared the stage.

Rubs: Regarding favorite lyrics---I think the song with the funniest lyrical content is Everything You Did...a guy gets home to find his woman(maybe his wife) in bed with another guy and then he gets turned on by hearing all the details of the encounter.

I think the song with the best (and most twisted) one liners has got to be Let George Do It.

-Try to design a postcard from your mind...

-Babies are ground up in the last big round-up(makes Don't Take Me Alive look like Sesame Street doesn't it?)

-Menthol, filter-tip dangling from your nether lip...

Thanks Edd Cote, Roy.Scam and the others who provided answers/opinions. I appreciate all the info.. No responses to the "Skunk" question...maybe it's better if we don't know this one.

San Fran Knight: I would recommend Oliver Nelson. The Blues And The Abstract Truth is a great album that has excellent musicians such as Bill Evans, Roy Haynes, Eric Dolphy, Paul Chambers and Freddie Hubbard. And Jazz Snobzz would probably argue that you don't have a jazz collection unless you have Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue. Many people consider this to be the best jazz album of all time. John Coltrane does some nice solos on this album.

MoRay, SF Knight, et al.: re YGT: many, many thanx, Roy the scammeister for unlocking this song for me! Gambling makes sense: this is a film noir encounter in a down-and-dirty, dangerous gambling hall, starts with a creepy deja-vu feeling in a guy down to the bottom of the barrel (Gold teeth rolling). But it's also about a failed, bitter love affair with s&m undertones--with, of course, Lady Luck in her beaded gown. You need her, but she tortures you with her fickleness, takes everything--and makes you like it. "You don't have to dance for me; I've seen you dance before"--he knows this game so well, but can't stop playing. The way he describes her is one of the most riveting lyrics in the song: "Your fortune is your roving eye, your mouthy legs, your gift for the runaround." Not mouth & legs; think about the image! Wow! Legs that say it all and more, and won't shut up! Think Tina Turner! Julia Roberts! Then, at the end, in harsh monosyllables, he says, "Dumb luck, my friend, won't suck me in this time"--but we're not ready to believe him. I'm still clueless about the tobacco interlude; I tried to make it into a haiku, but there're too many syllables. And who the hell is Kathy Berberian? Another Bard music student? A roulade is "a quick succession of notes, properly as sung to one syllable" (OED)(forgive me, musicians, I'm not one). Now, YGT II: to me, this is the reprise of a man who has lived twenty years in the two between the albums; been rolled and played a few times himself. But has come out with a little more perspective--YGT was a cynical vignette, but YGT II has become anthemic, in the company of "Sign In Stranger" and "Deacon Blues." Also more major nuances than YGT. Stars with a soaring observation of youth's exuberant mystery, maybe a reference to Burroughs, but could just as well be the Dharma Bums, hippies, or any counterculture. And with an eerily prescient "why do you tremble each time they pass by?" which could just as well describe any inner city street where a cruising car is a signal to take cover. Then goes on to take a detached view of the gamble: "Who are these strangers who pass through the door/who cover your action and go you one more?If you're feeling lucky you'd best not refuse/it's your game, the rules are your own--win or lose." He's no longer a victim in a drama but has become a rueful commentator on life's lessons--"the answer they reveal/life is unreal." The gold teeth image also evokes the barrels of them collected by the Nazis in the Holocaust--a gamble the Jews lost in a horrific way.

Ruby Baby, warm and wonderful, a late chime in to your favorite lyric request. But first, a story:

A few years ago, a local CD shop ran a promotion that if you could sing a lyric from a CD, you would get $2.00 off the purchase of that CD. I was informed of this special offer at the front of the check out line. They boy behind the register couldn't have been a whisker past 18 years old, and, even though I was purchasing the soundtrack to Searching for Bobby Fischer, which contains no lyrics, in honor of Katy Lied, which I had been listening to on the way to the store, I blurted out, in my best rendition of Bill Murray's Nick Wheels character imitating Donald Fagen, "Bad Sneakers and a Pina Colida, my friend, stompin' down the avenue by Radio City with a, transistor and a large sum of money to spend!" When the kids behind the counter said "Cool! Who sang that, Nirvana?", I couldn't bear to tell them that it was written 7 years before they were born! So I responded yes and rushed out of the store. Do you think that when I die, I'll be forced to listen to "Smells like Teen Spirit" over and over for infinity, as in Dante's Inferno?

It is a sad day indeed for music lovers. Tony Williams, the great Jazz drummer and my personal favorite of all time, died Sunday. He was 51. Those of you who know the music of Miles Davis know that he started playing with Miles in 1964 at the age of seventeen. The work he did on "Four and More" and "Funny Valentine", from a concert in '64 *still* ranks as some of the most amazing drum work ever recorded, despite his tender age at the time. I saw him in concert many times and have almost all his recordings as a leader and sideman. This is a great loss to everyone who heard and loved him. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Moo: You have not carefully read my post. The difference between 10exp23 and 10exp22 is a factor of ten, which on that scale is "about" the same! So are you the kind who will be exactly wrong or approximately correct?

Clas and Lars: What is it with Swedes and four letter names? Sheesh! Well, anyway guys, H. L. S. & B.

Ruby: Things must have gotten better to put that pal in the box, very good, you deserve it!

Listened to Aja a while ago, that song continues to impress me! What must they have been doing when they came up with that one!

Steve Cox,

Sorry to hear of Mr. Wiliams demise. A truly gifted artist indeed. What happened to him? He just recently (11/96) released "Wilderness" with guests Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock and Stanley Clarke. He also played on a jazz related television special in January and appeared to be in fine spirits and in fine health.

His work with Miles Davis' second great quintet was his finest work IMHO. I especially like "The Plugged Nickle" sessions from '65... Miles, Herbie, Ron Carter and Tony at the top of their respective forms. A true innovator... A major loss for music.

Tony Williams was superlative. Sorry he's gone.

StAl & John G, I like the new look!

Someone asked about Brian Sweet a while ago, and I spoke to him the other day. He's putting out a booklet on Steely Dan for Omnibus Press in Europe, which has done similar things with Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Dylan, and the Beatles. The booklet, as he explains, is pretty much for the novice fan, and will include song interpretations and discussions on certain solos. He said that the information he will provide will basically be what D&W have said throughout the years, with very little input from Sweet himself. It should be out sometime this summer, but will be available only in Europe.

Concerning the revival of Metal Leg, as some people had mentioned above, Brian had asked me if I was interested in reviving the zine with him. Well, here's my take on that...Metal Leg was great in it's time because there was so little information about Steely Dan available. Of course now, that's all changed, and I don't see any need in starting it up at this point. With Walter's involvement on the internet, and all the websites, why get the information from the horse's ass when you can get it from the horses mouth? Besides, I have nothing to add but fluff anyway, right More A?

lovebob: sure wish I could join ya'll in SFO! one day...

Eric: Nice yarn. Generation fade gets us all, eh? I remember being at a live music club in Indy around '82 -- during break, the DJ spun Kid C, announcing the first person to come up with the title would win a dbl-LP. No one took notice. I stepped up with the correct title and band, only to hear, "sorry, that's not it, but it looks like no one else even knows which band it is, so here." I happily walked away with the Heavy Metal soundtrack, thinking, thanks for the addition to my DANish collection. Duh.

ALL: How 'bout HSThompson's Fear&Loathing In Las Vegas CD? I just copped it USED -- amazing! I will wait to check it out as I travel an alternate route(via the Big Hole) toward that timeless town in two weeks/winks/weaks. Whoa, I dig Harry Dean Stanton.

YGK .. Thu Feb 27 06:45:52 PST 1997

Damn.

I must say, I'm amazed at the apparent lack of remorse and regret about Mr. Williams from our GBook. I mean, musically speaking, in the 90's we've lost some biggies: Miles Davis, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein immediately come to mind, and I'm sure I've missed a couple. Now Tony Williams wasn't Miles Davis, however, he was a part of Miles' 60's band that was so influential and important for jazz. He essentially kept time for Miles - in the 60's. Shit, man, if that isn't an incredible accomplishment, I'm not sure what is. Now, of course, I know that wasn't the only thing the cat did, but, being that Miles (and I'm sure Tony) had a great influence on Mssrs. Becker and Fagen, which give us what we all come he for, I think the cat deserves a little more respect.

To Tony Williams - a time traveler to our present - just stopped keepin' time, and will be remembered for a long time.

I read in the paper, a couple weeks ago, that David Bowie started marketing asset-backed bonds that will pay interest from royalties on some of his music (the asset being the songs). Apparently, he gets to collect $55 mil up front! I admit that I'm not very knowledgeable about these financial things, but couldn't WB & DF do likewise? They could erradicate the $700,000 debt in a New York heart-beat. Do you think they would consider such a thing?

I've noticed that way too many artists in the world make all the money after they're *gone from us*, which I think is rather ludicrous. Why shouldn't their work yield financial reward now, while they can benefit from it?

CLAS: What's your favorite SteelyDan lyrics? You're the one who started me thinking about it when you said we were all too soft to understand the *pain* in WBs songs <----I beg to differ. But you haven't told me which ones you like best. Spill it, dude!

YGK: maybe some of us haven't commented on Tony Williams because we feel he was tremendously overrated. At least I do. Too bad that he died, but overrated nonetheless. IMHO the whole jazz/SD connection is exaggerated. No doubt jazz was/is an influence on SD's music, and a big one, but it's clear to me that funk/R&B is at least as big an influence. The importance they place on the groove, and some comments they've made about influences like Sly Stone and George Clinton, would seem to bear this out.

YGK: I agree about the near total disregard of the contributions to drumming and to music made by Tony Williams. OVERRATED? That's absurd. Tony just never got the press that some other bigger names got. His SOUND was instantly identifiable. How many drummers can you say that about? Elvin, Blakey, B. Purdie, Cobham, and who else? Buddy Rich maybe. I think that Jazz is absolutely the single biggest influence on w+d. The cover of the Nightfly album was the coolest nod to that influence. It just bothers me that great artists can pass away and hardly anyone takes notice. Just further indication of a culturally bereft age. Sorry for the soapbox...I won't bug ya with anymore Tony Williams eulogizing.

RUBYBABY;I read, at the time Fagen was promoting "The Nightfly", that as he was making the recordings he always turned around to ask Walter (he was not there) when it came to the lyrics. And I think mr Becker is the mainman of lyrics in the Steelysongs. And if you ask me for some favou lyrics I think the first one who comes to mind is from Beckers soloCD. "Down At The Bottom", maybe because I, me myself has been down at/on the bottom in my life. On the Tony Williams as overrated drummer issue:

Stanley Crouch was told by The New York Daily News to please refrain from boring everyone with yet another article dedicated to an unknown jazz artist. This was in reference to his recent article about the death of one of jazz's most influencial drummers, Tony Williams.

Overrated? Even with all of his accomplishments, Tony lived, worked and then died in relative obscurity.

As far as D&W having influences aside from jazz well, I couldn't agree more. Certainly Funk and R&B are major influences. The New York Rock and Soul Review sessions are a testiment to that. Rock & Roll and Folk Music (i.e. Dylan) are also major influences. I would say however that overall, the most obvious and most ubiquitous musical framework for SD songs has been derived from jazz. The chord structures, the attitude, the musicianship, the solos... The short list of Fagen's musical influences (as stated by Fagen himself) includes Mingus, Miles, Rollins, Oliver Nelson, Clifford Brown and Monk... I don't think it's possible to exaggerate the jazz/SD connection. They are inexorably tied to one another.

Just my $0.02,

Joe

Pearl still in the quarter Fri Feb 28 08:44:08 PST 1997

Dear Joe Murtha, when I said overrated, I meant by critics like Stanley Crouch, not by the general populace. Personally, I think D&W probably lost interest in Miles sometime after Kind of Blue, when he started veering off in other directions. They were probably much more influenced by his '50s work than by the '60s fusion stuff with Williams.

BTW, I think Ruby may have been fooled into taking Walter's joke memos to Craig Fruin from last summer's tour too literally. One of those memos mentioned running up a $700K debt from the tour.

We ALL KNOW we have a moral responsibility to "put down that knife, unhand that wench, pull the car over to the side of the road, and now, together, as one"* open up our wallets and relieve D&W from this $700,000 debt. I'll bet that there are maybe one or two fans above the 700,000 quantity, and if, as a collective unit of like minded individuals, we all send in just a buck each, *POOF*!, our gods debt is gone! Not to mention the anxiety that is associated with such a large burden.
