i knew that with enough help from my nephew, i'd finally find a dan site worth its weight. Greetings to all those on the line.
replies: Here at the western world is about visiting a brothel, i think. Remember the line, " Knock twice rap with your cane, feels nice you're out of the rain."
Fav song: today, it's Chain Lightening. Trying to learn it on guitar. Excellent solos on the original and live versions.
Fav obscure lyric: From demo "I Can't Function", the line at fade at end of song -- "I was a 'W' now I'm an 'M'. What the hell does that mean??????? Turned upside down by the old lady?

I'm one of the younger Dan Fans, been that way for six years. I caught them in Jones Beach '94 and at Roseland Ballroom NYC 11'95. I'm looking for clues to the tunes - chord progressions or riffs to trade. If you're one of the same link up. Also don't miss the 'Guitar School' article Febuary '96 "In Deep With: Steely Dan" transcriptions to: Reelin', Kid Charlemagne, Rikki, Peg, and others.
I hear you are singing a song of the past, I see no tears- I know that you know it may be the last, for many a years-
What a pleasant way to start off a new semester. I'm new to WWW and had no idea something of this caliber would be included in it. Keep up the good work; good to know there are steely dan fans in actual existance (hard to find them on a college campus)
Anyone know: who is that babe with the mummy dude?
_Kamakiriad_ is a **Great** album to listen to while playing _Doom_ or _Castle Wolfenstien_
At last I've found some real info on Dan. Keep it flowing.
Hey there Pat,
I finally signed the registry; what do I win? ha ha ha I fugure by now you should sick of all the e-mail that I have been leaving in your box. Take Care
Chris
I don't know how long I've been a fan. I just recently started collecting their CDs. Last night I got GAUCHO and love it. My favorite selection: JOSIE; favorite album: so far... AJA. I need to get some sound equiptment worthy of playing SD, right now I'm just glad I can get sound through the speakers. I also really liked Don's work on KAMAKIRIAD. I also wanted to note that I am a fan under the age of 40 (25). Thanks for the wonderfull work on this page, it really shows.
um...sorry about posting 80 of the same messages up there. i'm still wet behind the ears and reelin' in the--oh, nevermind.
I saw a posting from a fan who is "under 40". Well I'm only 16 years old and am a huge fan of Steely Dan. I own every album, some on both C.D. and tape, as well as various piano and guitar books from them. Their tapes are almost always in my car stereo. I think that it's odd that other young people my age have not found out what great music Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have produced over the years (most all before my birth) let alone what inspirational lyrics they have. Almost any of their lyrics relate to every day life/struggles, and make sense of everyday problems (When the demons are at your door, in the morning they won't be there no more). Anyway, I'd like to thank my dad for letting me hear "Pretzel Logic" two years ago. Thanks to him I have now found the greatest musicians of all time!
P.S.: Does anyone now how to get a hold of some of the advertisement posters that are pictured in the Citizen Steely Dan Booklet?
I hear you are singing a song of the past, I see no tears- I know that you know it may be the last, for many a years-
Hey people. Haven't had the chance to check in for a couple of days. Working 80++ hours a week these days. It's St. Dan music that helps me make it through the day slavin' at the office. Found something last week that I never saw before, A pre-St. Dan CD by the boys called 'Roaring of the Lambs'. Great stuff. Does anybody know if there are anymore like this? I am still interested in peoples thoughts about a party/get-together/Danvention for later on this year. E-Mail me your thoughts in regard to dates and places or if it is a stupid idea that we have no shot of pulling off. Hey, people who drive Saturns get together every year some place in Tennesee. Thousands of 'em. A hundred or so people would be fun for us. Let me know.
The people on the street have all seen better times
Hector, you must be very pleased to find that Kennedy Quarters have never been freshly minted, at least not yet. Silver striking sidewalks, so now, replaced with clad. 'Such are the newest years'. Time to go fishing. D.
Can any major dude confirm the existence or otherwise of the website www.don+walt.com alluded to in the AinA album sleeve?

Delighted with the Page - " The chances are good you will thrive - if you make it back alive"
Greetings from London...
Beautiful, beautiful. I've been smitten since hearing Nightfly on my first ever night in College (1985) and smoking my first ever "magic" cigarette - a habit I have since abandoned but it seemed like a good idea at the time. From there I've worked steadily backwards through the entire Pantheon... the only set I don't love unconditionally is Countdown... am I missing something, or do others agree that it's less focussed, less compelling... I don't know.
Anyway - fast forward to 1996. I'm 29 and working in Public Relations - my dream is to come over to your place and drink Kirschwasser from a shell on a beach somewhere (how does it taste, I wonder - and is it spelt like that anyway?
Three for Today:
Black Cow - terribly sad and then a massive emotional U-turn right at the end when the chords suddenly twist from minor to more major-y... "Hey yeah - there IS hope folks!" as our protagonist finishes his drink and stumbles out into the unknown. Exquisisite electric piano solo as well, in TWO sections (count 'em!) Kid Charlemagne - Words can't express. So I won't FM - Stalking, sinewy, expensive, bloated... gorgeous.
Bye for now, mail me girls if you're looking to chat with a v. English guy who sometimes wishes he was in CA in 1976.
Hello from Norway and a FEMALE Steely Dan fan !!! I thought that I was the only person in the world who had discovered this brilliant music and lyrics !!! "Could it be that I have found my home at last ?". THIS IS SO F.... FANTASTIC !! I have been a Steely Dan- fan for about 20 years. My favourite albums: Katy Lied.,The Royal Scam , Aja, Gaucho. And of course the solo albums from Donald and Walter !Have anyone noticed how Walter sounds like Zappa (Surf and/or die among others). The "Danvention" idea is excellent. Why not turn it into an annual event ?? If you are an old and enthusiastic Steely Dan fan - throw out your gpld teeth and contact me by email.
Hi Hanne, I love the Dan and can telemark till the boys say when, Chris from England, I was 21 in 76 in California and was grooving to Royal Scam, learned to drive daddy's big black car in 72 rocking to Reeling in the Years, finally got to see the boys here by the San Francisco Bay in 94...the best concert I've ever seen. To you young Dan Fans, I'm glad that you can appreciate some great classic music and yes, the lyrics mean a lot to me too. I seem to date the big events of my life by what Dan songs were on at the time. Well, got to make a getaway, pappa say oh, no, no hesitation K.L.
Hello, Dan Women and Men. Wishing you all the best, and special greetings to Hanne, ever gone telemarking to some Dan music, my two favorite sports. See you at the Dan reunion--I vote for somewhere in Calif. being that's my home at last. GREAT St.Dan concert in 94 here. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Also you Jr. fans w/o the grey hair, I love to here that you have better taste than the average kid. Keep it turned on, KittyLied
Dig your page. Maybe you should put the sign-in section near the top though; add more links. Don and Walter a fun party for backstage action; haven't run into them in the islands in a couple of years though. Maybe they're on the wagon!
Great sight! I learned to work the saxophone. Of course let's not forget "I Got The News".
Hey now!
Back from Vegas with money in my pocket and my dignity in tact! Had a blast. While your down there be sure to check out 97.1 -- "The Point". They play a TON on the Dan. Just beware, they also played Hot Child in the City and some cheeseball .38 special tunes! Also, if you want to take in a show try "Cirque Du Soliel" at Treasure Island. They are an artistic island in a sea of shit. Political correctness is not my middle name, but there is something WAY wrong with Las Vegas.
Anyway, enough ranting, back on the subject at hand. To Scott Robbins - You should check out the Catalyst CD. It is a double CD that contains tracks from 3 different Thunderbolt releases without any duplication. I picked up a copy at Barnes and Noble of all places, but you can also purchase this and a few other imports from CDnow©. Here is the url:
http://cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=NEW/from=gratefuldead/page=popsearch/dm=c/artlc=7674+31192
Cut and paste that bad boy into your browser and it will take you right to the Steely Dan page. Really cool stuff including a discussion group, discography info, track lists, cover art, lot's of stuff! Oh yeah, ignore the gratefuldead portion on the address. Long story......
If there are any experts out there on some of the more obscure imports, please chime in!
Never in my wildest dreams did I think that this page was going to be so popular. Now you all are considering a Get-together. Wow! If it's on the west coast of the US, I'll try to make it! To everyone that has thanked me for putting this site together, you're welcome!! It has without a doubt been my pleasure!

Just testing the extended email address box. It works!

Like some I too am A 16 year old fan of Steely Dan. I have liked them for about 3 years now.I guess I got into them from my dad who was always listening to them.Im so glad that I can talk to people around here who like them too. In San Diego, they have A dan tribute band called "the steeley Damned" Theyre awesome. thanks again.
Danvention. Dan Fans, read up before messages. Remember, all Steely Dan Fans are not 'hooked Netwise yet'. Tell your brothers and sisters. D.
Love the live album, however it's obvious the boys do have bosses in the record biz. I thought it was shameless to put Book of Liars smack in the middle of the CD. C'mon, what better plug for Tracks of Whack, which is also on Giant and is a CD they'd like to squeeze a few more sales out of since it's only about a year old. Also, the song selection consists mainly of AOR staples for obvious commercial reasons. On the other hand, it's foolish to expect anything else from wealthy, middle aged men with a finite amount of commercial viability left.
To all you Dan heads,
I started listening to Steely Dan in seventh grade when I threw in Aja, which my mom had lying around the house. I've been hooked on them eversince.I am now a college student. They are quite possibly the funkiest whiteboys ever. They do not make music or lyrics like this anymore. I have never seen them in concert but want to. I missed their reunion concert in New York. Please write me on e-mail and let me know so info. When hard days abound, Steely Dan can always cheer me up. There are truely an amazing group. Favorite songs are Only a Fool, Black Cow, Fez, and many more.
I am really with response I'm getting regarding the "Danvention". I guess since I started this, I will take the role of leader? The response is more than I imagined, but we need more, as Voyager Dave said, a lot of us St. Dan fanatics are not on-line. Tell your friends. I am not much of a planner, and I have a business that keeps me busy about 80 hours a week, so I need lots of input/ ideas. Please E-Mail me with your suggestions on hoe we can pull off this scam royale. Or post here. If you E-Mail me, I can give you my telephone number.
I need dates people prefer, and locale suggestions. So far, So. California is by far the most popular.
Act natural like you don't care
Pleeeease take me along when you slide on New fan--lots of time to make up. Thanks for being there.#sounds
Dear Richie W., FYI - Donald & Walter do have "the say" as to what goes on their records. All the material on the live record was selected from '93 and '94 shows. Roger Nichols recorded the shows live, and yes, there were some overdubs. But to assume that only hits were played to sell records is wrong. In fact, I found it ironic that certain '94 tour shirts had all the lyrics to Rikki Don't Loose That Number when that song wasn't played at all. It wasn't even rehearsed. Alot of Dan fans may wonder why they played East St. Louis Toodle-oo at the Manhattan Center live remote show in October when that clearly isn't a popular tune. It's an Ellington tune that's not even on the record they are trying to promote. so why? Because they wanted to. And as far as comercial viability is concerned. It was never their intention to write things with only sales in mind. I think the music speaks for that. Yes they are wealthy, this is not a crime and you would never know it by hanging with them. Yes they are middle aged, but God willing we all will be. I love Kamakiriad. Walter produced it and played bass. Eleven Tracks Of Whack is very different from Dan stuff for a few reasons. First and foremost and most obvious Walter sings. So why Book of Liars live? Walter wanted to sing a little. These guys still got plenty to say. I don't mean to come down on you. sorry if I appear to be. There's two feet of snow on the ground. Kind of nice to stay in by the window and browse and listen to Snowbound.
I've spent my recent years listening to the Dan and trying to defend their odd choices of lyrics. That's partly what I like about them. They're not afraid to be odd. My tribute to the band was to spend a week of my precious high school summer break (many years ago now, I fear) air-brushing a concert t-shirt for a `Gold Teeth III' tour with stops in Fagen, Montana and Becker, Colorado. Oh for those days when I could crank up Boston Rag and spend a week painting a silly shirt.
It's hard to describe to some people the feeling that comes over me when I listen to a song like Boston Rag or Chain Lightning. The sweet, sweet guitar and Fagen's soulful lyrics. The man should be acknowledged as the poet he really is.
Listened to 'Alive' about 8 times in a row today at the office today. Pissed off my 17 year-old secretary, she left early in a huff. I think she said something about that I should listen to real bands, like Aerosmith. Poor girl. Is there no hope for today's teenagers. My apologies to the few that post here, as Kitty Lied said a few days ago, "You have better taste than the average kid."
Mister driver, take me where the music play
Have loved the boys' music since '72 - blown away originally by the guitars originally and then everything else. Anybody interested in putting together MIDI files of Dan classics? I have a few that I've either found on the Net or started myself. E-mailing them back and forth, each of us adding or "fixing" parts until we have some pretty good files is a lot of fun. Let me know if interested!
'Drive west on Sunset, to the Sea'. Forget about the Jungle Music. It appears that there may be an impromptu 'Danvention' somewhere, West Coast, near the sea. All Dan Friends post thoughts about this. It may be the summer of '96? 'Babylon Sisters?' D.
Thanks for the wav files. I embedded them in a spreadsheet discography I keep on the Dan. Now when the mouse pointer goes over a song, the WAV plays!
Call me Deacon Blues.Good to see there are so many folks who appreciate great music, and lyrics that are almost as cool as the chord progressions.
Particular faves: Deacon Blues, Brooklyn, Aja, My Old School, The Goodbye Look...heck I love them all.
"Won't you pour me a Cuban breeze Gretchen".

A Danvention? I'm on. I don't know anyone else crazy enough to come over from England so I guess I'll be one of the few overseas visitors. It will also be my first time in CA (I presume you'll be having it there? It wouldn't be quite the same if the venue was somewhere in N Dakota I suppose. An obvious observation but there MUST be a battle of the covers bands. I will be performing New Frontier on a Casiotone so book early folks. Also - is there a suitable vendor of Walter Becker frightwigs. I want to see fringes down to people's WAISTS. Oh, and nasty yellow sunglasses. And lots of cheesecloth. Let's do it.

I got a new web browser for my birthday today, my 48th. I just had to check out these "cybershrines" erected in my honor. My lawyer will be in touch concerning royalty payments on all the copyrighted material being offered. Hell, it's probably enough to live in. Might not have to do a new record after all.
To the "Real Insider"
As far as I am concerned, you don't need to do another record. If you do one for money, I would probably suck anyway.
Happy birthday.
Some more "must haves" for the impending DanVention...
* A custom built inflatable hot-air balloon in the shape of a 3M digital multitrack recorder hovering overhead to alert Dan fiends far and near. * A fifteen-foot high bronze statue of Larry Carlton * "Backward, Jack - Do It Again" quiz game... identify the track snippets played IN REVERSE. Maybe we'll spot some Satanic messages * The 'Black Cow' Cocktail Bar. Self explanatory. Who has the recipe? * In England in the 70's schoolboys would eagerly collect and swap 'Top Trump' cards that listed the specifications of high-performance racing cars/planes etc. The game was a simple matter of playing off against your opponent's cards... "V12 engine - that beats your four cyliders" etc etc. I am currently prototyping my own "Dan Trumps" pack that features a colour photo (where available) of revered Dan session players, together with half a dozen key parameters (number of albums played on, session day rate, date of birth, number of instruments played, largest number of overdubs in a single session etc). I hope to have these ready some time in June '97 so it won't make it to DanFest No. 1 I fear. * Fashion parade. Spot prizes for the Baddest Sneakers * Steam-powered Kamakiri racing. How fast does YOURS go? * A special exhibition of other impossible Fagen devices such as just machines to make big decisions. I will be attempting to bore a hole from New York to Paris with a shovel before making the journey on foot in 90 minutes or less.
Any more?
Dan Convention sounds fun. When I saw the Greek Theatre '93 show, we picniced beforehand with items relating to Dan lyrics, such as "Szechuan Dumplings," "Sausage and Beer," and of course, "Pretzels." I'm not so sure about "Scotch Whiskey and Dying Behind The Wheel." Maybe we'll get the Mayor and all his friends to come. Perhaps one of the more faithful fans will give us a rousing cover rendition of "The Second Arrangement." HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mr. ...WHATEVER. :)
It's good to see my friends who make fun of my music are misguided. Great to see lots of Dan fans out there. I'd write more, but all my dime dancing is through . . .
To KatyLied: In fact I have been telemarking to SD music !! I also recommend the combination of cross-country skiing and SD on the ear - especially "Time out of mind" (where people are rolling in the snow) and other tracks from Gaucho. I almost cry when you say "I thought I`d died and gone to heaven" (about the SF concert). Why do I live in Europe ?? To Scott Robins - the Danvention Leader:: California is obviously the place (illegal fun under the sun). What about the time ? I believe that most European fans would prefer sometime between May and September ? Please inform us on the SD Sign in stranger guestbook !
I hear you are singing a song of the past, I see no tears- I know that you know it may be the last, for many a years-
Danvention---So many people are interested, but so few are writing me, and I know jack about planning anything. The idea came to me after hearing about the getother planned for Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans. And what about the yearly get-together for Saturn owners. I'm sure we can out party that bunch. Back to point, I need help! W here do I start, and can't make all the arrangements myself. By the way, California, particularly LA is by far the most popular response. Also, people seem to be in favor of a late summer happening. Let me know. To St. Alphonzo, share your thoughts.
Folks are in a line around the block

Wow! This is great! Great to have the lyrics to the albums. A long time Dan Fan thanks you all. Keep the info coming.
My favorite lost Dan classic is "A Little With Sugar" from the West german bootleg from Castle Communications entitleed "Becker and Fagen: The Collection." Its sort of a prepubescent's view of "Josie." Does anyone know the whereabouts of Rock and soul review CD's from the year following the commercially released Rock and Soul review CD?
Anyone know anything about a Dan-album named Legends? Could someone tell me something about it? I would very much appreciate it. Thatīs all for now Micce
What do I have to do to get one of my comrades to send a tape of the Letterman appearance to the UK?
To the "real insider" from Italy.
A computer break prevented us from posting the right day, but anyway here there has been a small reception with some hearty toasts. Thanks for showin' up, if we guessed right. And many thanks. Love - Al&Gas
Good evening and good 96 to everyone of you! Do you remember our Xmas contest? The question was: Who labelled SD lyrics as DOWNER SURREALISM? Here we are with the results! The contestants have been 4 (nothing less!) and 2 out of them mailed the right answer, which is FRANK ZAPPA. All the contestants will get the fab prize (we are so generous...) which is a scan of the two to be used as PC desktop. The success of this first contest obliges us to a soon-to-come repetition. Watch out for the next Al&Gas smashing SD contest! Love Al&Gas
To "A real insider": Happy birthday !!!!!!!!
On a night like this you look up at your lover, it`s like you`re in some old cartoon...
I'm never gonna do it without the fez on... In fact I'm wearing one now.
In case youre interested, here are the votes so far in regards to the Danvention: California/LA=6 Miami=1 No preference=1. If you are interested but haven't e-mailed me or posted, please do so as soon as possible. Nothin much more to say & too tired too think, so I think I will sign off and just listen to all 4 Citizen discs all the way through and go to bed.
But we know you're smoking wherever you are
To the Ultimate SD Insider: What is it like to be recognized in public by people who are not your friends or acquaintances? Is it exciting, distressing, amusing or nauseating to be the subject of multiple "cybershrines"? My gut instincts tell me that I would be happiest as a rich and ANONYMOUS human being. If I couldn't go about in public without 1 in 10 nutcases approaching me to quote my own song lyrics, I would retreat to some small cabin in Idaho stocked with plenty of grenades and Wild Turkey.

Miami, La, who cares count me in, daddy dont live in that New York City nomore.
Danfans:
Daddy might not live in NYC any more, but a Danvention in LA? The East Coast is the only way to go. For one thing, you'll get a better European response. If you want to guarantee warm weather, there are probably as many Dansongs about Florida as California. We can walk between the raindrops. Incidentally: thanks to NPR, for playing "Snowbound" during the breaks between Friday "Morning Edition" stories on the East Coast blizzard.
Hey Zombies: I see our Danvention happening now. Thanks for all the positive support. E-mail me with ideas. Lot's of planning to be done. Although all suggestions definately have their pluses and minuses, LA seems to be the big favorite from people who have put in a vote for a specific place. That of course could change, so if you haven't posted or E-mailed me, please do so. Tell your friends, who may not be online, but who would be interested in participating. All e-mails will be replied to. Keep in touch.

I used to wonder why WB and DF were so reclusive, after reading some of their"fan mail" I can understand why PF dropped out. Greetings to all Dan fans whenever they were born!
Finally! Some people who will understand my screen name. "Alive in America" is great, but what happened to all of the great cuts they did on the recent tours? I hope there's a Volume II.

Let us hope and pray that The Dan realease a VIDEO of their previous summer tours, WHat a treat it would be to Watch them from an easychair.
Back with a flourish, danFans. I've missed you all while I was away on vacation in Key West. However, it's fine to be back to my "home" (at last...). There are several issues I need to speak of with you. First and foremost concerns the VH-1 special. I'm not quite sure how things went wrong, but either two of the showings did not air or my VCR did not work. A call to arms: Please call VH-1 in New York and ask them to play the show again. They told me they were taking names and if enough people called they would air the show again. The number is 212.258.7800. Ask for Viewer Services and demand the show be put on again at a popular hour (do our boys really deserve the 3AM time slot?). Thanks in advance. If I have a chance, I will uphold my promise to provide all those in need with a copy. Now, this idea of Mr. Robbins', a danVention, is mind-altering. We need to make this happen. I feel like you are all the friends any danFan could ever desire, and IF we were all separated at birth, we need to be reunited. I don't think Messieurs Fagen and Becker would be totally opposed to meeting us in Miami or Santa Monica...I'm sure a little coaxing could go a long way. A danSummit is a beautiful vision, but let us keep in mind that the dream is wholly obtainable. I know that danFans are the sort who probably avoid these kinds of meetings, but I also believe all us cynics and hipsters will come out to play. Look forward to Labor Day, amigos and sisters. Josie will be comin' home...
Great page. Hey, was that "real insider" who I think it was???" Anyway, I've got LIVE in America on while I'm cruising and came across this page - "I see your picture, I keep it with your letter, uh, home page?"
Thanks for the effort. I saw the Dan back in Irvine in '94 - WOW!! I had waited a lifetime and it finally happened. My only secret wish was that they had played "Any world" (my teenage years hymm).
We (I think) have been graced by someone special. Let's just assume for a momment that it was none other than DF himself. This means one of two things......
One -- WOW!!!
Two -- Oh shit! I'm in big trouble now.
Now, in regards to this "DanFest". I vote for So Cal. If you think for a momment that we could actually get either WB or DF to show, I think your nuts. However, maybe we could settle for this cover band I keep hearing about -- "Steely Damned" to play. San Diego isn't that far from LA after all. Just a thought
Peace, StAl
I seen it on the TV-the movie show-and now the Net! Thanks for a great site-keep it coming!
They just keep going. Would like to hear about any plans for a '96 tour. The one in Phoenix in '93 was spectacular. The one in '94 was a letdown; seemed like they were just at the end of the tour and were going through the motions. A shame to degrade truly great artists, though, two of the most influential in their own time, I feel. I go binges from time to time, just putting on the headphones and imersing myself. Incredible stuff.
The Danvention will be happening. If you have not already done so e-mail me or Josie with all the information you would care to share. Or post on this page and either Josie or myself will get back to you. All input is not only needed but appreciated. We are hoping to have an itinerary by the end of April or beginning of May.
Why not chase it til it grows

DAN IT ALL, looks like of and about the Western Coast. I beleive that south of Santa Monica, Venice Beach area, has room for.. There may be a stage area for impromptu sounds. '96 is the year for Josie to come home, was it, Labor Day? How about a warm up: "Summer of '96'?". Bash in Septiembre? D.
Hi Dan fans! This is the first SD page I've been to--looks great...Saw the 1994 concert in Orlando, FL... Pro musician & Dan fan for many years...vl
Without a doubt one of the all time greatest bands!!!
Hello one and all. Saw the guys in Nashville in '93 in the rain. As far as I know, that tour was the first time they played the South. I'd been waiting twenty years to see them. For those interested in guitar, visit the OLGA ftp site. Pay special attention to the trascriptions by Howard Wright of the UK. Enjoy.
"Hello one and all..." Greetings from 'Snowbound' Connecticut. I am assuming most of you hard core fans have heard about the danSummit that is beginning to take form. Though it promises to be a weekend of partying to the dan's grooves, some organizing must begin. As for me, this looks to be a mini-vacation coupled with a glorious (re)union of my fellow gaucho amigos. Luscious L.A. (go there on a dare and go it alone...), driving west on Sunset, Smokey Sundays...it all sounds fab to me. Scott and I are as serious as two danFans can get about putting a danVention together. The first order of business is to establish some sort of committee willing to help with organizing. The more people willing to help, the less work for each individual. As for those who may just be interested in attending, send out e-mails to either srobins@primenet.com or me (tahia@minerva.cis.yale.edu) I am craving to know what all you cats think about this danSummit. Can it happen? Does Santa Monica beat out Miami? Can anyone do an impromptu East St.Louis Toodle-oo? So many questions, so little of Josie's mind left. Comments are expected..."I know you're out there, with rage in your eyes and your megaphones..."
To the Real Insider: I've always wanted to tell you thanks for all that you do. Would you ever be interested in writing a "complete, annotated" book of lyrics, including various interviews, record reviews, etc? Or am I just compiling such a book for my own amusement? Hey, it's worth asking, at least. And happy belated birthday! Please respond, if possible.#sounds
St. Al, anyone could be the real insider, even me, KDLied. I read the liner notes to Catalyst and found the hallowed one's birthday listed within. Only a fool would say that he would live "in" the royalties from this page. By the by, no DanFan should be without this CD, its worth laying your Jackson down for. I give it 4 spanish kisses. Nice "unplugged " versions of many songs we all know from later albums, plus some other little known tunes that deserve a listen, like Ida Lee, Stone Piano, and Android Warehouse. It ain't no drag...KL.
My 18 month daughter hums the Dan and shakes her little butt to "Babylon Sisters", what a wonderful world! I truly am a sick Dan fan. I just bought the Eurpoean greatest hits import CD title, Remastered, the Best of Steely Dan. That gives me the US box set of Dan songs, the Decade of Steely Dan hits, the Canadien CD of Steely Dan's Greatest Hits 1972-1980, plus the sequel hits US version. That gives me five different CD's that have Reelin in the Years, Do It Again and Rikki! But, if anyone knows of any others I will buy it...just to have it! I'm drinking my big Black Cow and getting out of here! #sounds
Funny how all of the east and west coast residents want to have the Danvention in their own neck of the woods. What the hell, I'll put my suggestion in then. How about Oklahoma? OK, so I live here, big deal. It's centrally located. Not that it necessarily has to be Oklahoma, it could be anywhere in the middle of the country. Just a thought.
Is there anyone who knows the adress to Roger Nichols homepage? Is there a R N homepage??
A DanVention - I'd go anywhere, anytime. All for now you luckless pedestrians.
The sister returns! Greetings to my scurvy brothers and Babylon sisters.
La La Land sounds okay for the big confab, but how about doing the San Francisco Show and Tell? Drive west on Sunset to the sea...
I'm all fogged in today, so Third World Man keeps spinnin' around my head.
Well, I guess being addicted to the Net has finally paid off! Hello to all you DanFans and to Jessica who doesn't know where she is @ NYU. Betcha' you didn't know that there is another whacked Steely Dan fan with your same name, age, and location in the country. Cool, huh? O.K. I'm too psyched to know what to say.
I don't know about you, but I'M never gonna do it without the fez on!
Josie is absolutely correct. The 'Committee' formulated, must ultimately make the final determination of 'where' and 'when' a 'get together' so shall take place. January, 1996, begins the "countdown to ecstasy." Scott Robins is tabulating all, thereof, any requests, about 'fore mentioned. D.
It's a pleasure to see so many Dan Fans. Always felt strange being "into" the Dan when the typical bands to be into were Floyd & Zep, etc. I remember back in '89 when I was about 19 & we had a family event my house. A cousin of mine, who was almost twice my age at the time was browsing my CD collection & noticed the conspicuous Dan collection, chronologically ordered from Can't Buy A Thrill to the Nightfly. Back in '89, CD's were still a pretty big deal & he was so impressed that someone that young would be a Dan fanatic. It was a lame party until that point...we just stayed in the stereo room & blasted the Dan. Every time I see him, he just looks at me & shakes his head and says "A Steely Dan freak!" BTW, download the reader program, it's worth the hard drive space.
We we're colder and much higher than we ever were before...
Indeed David, the 'Countdown to Ecstasy' has commenced. Scott R. and I hope to have a completed list of those willing to attend by late April or so. For those unable to attend (although I can't imagine WHAT IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM would hold you back from such an event): We honestly trust your opinion and impeccable taste as danFans to offer up suggestions for ostensible activities at this dan-O-Rama. I've posted on other links to let others know of the upcoming danBash. When we have a satifactory list, I will begin speaking to some musical publications such as Rolling Stone, etc. Knowing that the Dan is due for a supersonic come-back, I feel that a bona fide danVention will be just the thing to launch them over the top (not that they couldn't do this themselves or anything, but a little Fan help will go far). Above all, space cowboys, let us not forget that Steely Dan is a Constitutional Right: "Life, Liberty, and The Love of The Dan"......Josie.
DanVention, a Steely Dan concert, call it what you like, just tell me when and where only a fool would miss it.
Hey now!
Just to let you fine people know that the "Real Insider" is about as inside the Steely Dan organization as I am. Lemme tell you -- The closest I EVER came to anyone involved with Steely Dan was when their tour bus almost ran me over at the show in George.....
Not that I ever *really* thought it was DF. Give me a break! Besides, aren't they supposed to be in the studio right now???
Now! Onto more important things. Yes Josie, I will post the information onto the "touring" page. Scott, my vote is for SUNNY Southern California. It's close, It's warm, and airfares (for me anyway) are cheap! To Kitty, WHAT ROYALTIES??? :) If someone is making money here, I'd like to know about it. It costs me $30 a month just for the access and the disk space. There are some benefits though, but I aint saying what. Frankly, my guess is I would have been told to stop a long time ago if the band and/or it's management had a real problem with what I'm doing here. That is I think, 'er I hope....I would have emailed you all individually, but my mail server has been acting up a bit. Sometimes I really do HATE these machines....
Peace, StAl
"Real Insider" shmeel bimspider!
DF was likely surfin' the Net long before now. The guy gets into emerging and speculative technologies. He probably called Todd Rungren to teach him about the Net!
Jeez, is this a guest book or a newsgroup. Can we get a .wav sample of the B/F song that Barbara Streisand covered way back when? I've never heard it.
The Danvention should be at Anthony's Bar & Grill.
To Kitty, You are a Shlemeel and Shlemozzle rolled into one. You had a few poor cyber-shmoes, including myself hoping. I trust St. Al pissed good into your Cheerios. Now why don't you go off and surf the "Paul is Dead," page or something. As for Steely Clambake '96, SoCal is the place for me, too. Hopefully, we'll be able to arrange a tour of the Village Recorder in West LA - St. Dan' s home during most of their recording career. Perhaps a meal at Gladstone's at Sunset and the Sea. Come to LA on a dare and don't go it alone......
I'm glad that I found this web site. I look forward to reading and finding out more about Steely Dan.
glad to have found this site. my favorite Dan song? too many. we were all falling in love and kissing on warm summer nights way back in 75, to the tune of Ricky don't lose that number. and riding my bike I sang: Any world that I'm welcome to (is better than the one I come from). just one thing: the band never made it to Holland, why not? lots of people here were waiting for that moment, still are. bye, showbizkids with the steelydan t-shirts.
I hear you are singing a song of the past, I see no tears- I know that you know it may be the last, for many a years-
I hope you're listening, Tristan and Gustav!
Hey Zombies:
Sorry for the slow e-mail responses and my general neglect this week for the Danvention. As a St. Dan fanatic, I reserve the right to be aloof every now and again. Never in a million years did I think the response would be so great. I have vowed to work on the project for most of the day on Sunday and check in with Josie on Tuesday. Everybody interested is encouraged to help us pull off the ultimate royal scam. E-mail Josie or myself with your suggestions and what you can do to help. As far as the location goes, it is true most people would like in in their "neck-of-the-woods". I think the only way to decide is the democratic way. I am counting each interested vote one time, regardless of the number of people the vote is cast for. California is indeed the huge leader at this time and the vote for Oklahoma is counted. Personally, I will travel anywhere on the planet that we pick. By the way, the people who say "anywhere", but are not voting should still pick a preference to keep a fair count. Sorry for the rambling.
If I stay inside I might live til Saturday
Speaking for those of us Steely Dan fans who don't live on the West Coast and don't have lots of disposable cash, I'd like to vote for the "Danvention" somewhere in the Midwest, like Chicago or St. Louis or Indianapolis (Indy is a good convention town, folks).
I enjoy the new live album, but it sounds a bit flat. They played around too much with it in the studio. They should have just recorded it and let it go. The concert I saw in Detroit was sounded great, not flat or forced. W and D need to trust their band more and their mixing and dubbing skills less.
"Throw out your Gold Teeth and see how they roll! The answer they reveal life is unreal!"
Mike
I just got into The Dan this year from listening to my parents' albums. Dan Rocks!!! The more I hear, the more I love. "And you know in my travels as the facts unravel I found this to be true..."
Hello, Baton Rouge- and everyone else. I,m for L.A., especially because I live 100 miles north of there. Please notify me when we have a time and a place. For the guy who puts Countdown at the bottom of the list, are you out of your mind? It's my second favorite, and "Your Gold Teeth" marks the only weak spot on the album- thank God they made a sequel, if you will. Is "the insider" a hoax? I just bought the Complete Steely Dan songbook by the Hal Leonard Publishing Company, and it bites. It is helpful with learning the old material, but falls short on most of the songs from The Royal Scam on. Howard Wright's transcriptions are better, but not always correct, either. I am a 25 year old fan, myself. Much thanks to the band who inspired me to pick up my guitar and get better at it. At the Danvention, don't mix wine with kerosene.
HERE'S A DREAM!!
HOW ABOUT DANVENTION IN CONJUNCTION WITH A CONCERT DATE ON THE SD 1996 SUMMER TOUR? YA GOTTA ADMIT IT WOULD BE GREAT!!!
And I thought I was crazy for enjoying the tremendous musical talent of a couple guys called Steely Dan - It's great to know that there are others out there who dig their music too!! A Danvention? Count me in - afterall, I was lucky enough to see them in Phoenix in 93 and 94 (5th row and 2nd row accordingly - but who's bragging) Can you possibly pick a favorite song? I think not. However, the guitar licks in "Don't take me alive" are world class and who would argue that "Aja" doesn't provide a drum performance second to none (not to mention the guitar, saxes etc.) I could go on and on bt it seems a milktruck just eased into my space....See ya at the Danvention!
I forgot a few other items last night. Would someone help me with exactly what Don is trying to get at in "Throw Back the Little Ones?" I really love the song, but probably would marry it if I knew what it meant. Also, could JG "Razor Boy" Maloney get a clue already? Anyone remember that "Gauchomigo" fellow who signed in last month- you know, the Italian guy? Did anyone here at the western world understand what his deal was? So long, hey, thanks my friends.
I'm a really big Steely Dan fan. Of all the Steely Dan pages I've visited, this one is the best. Keep up the great work!!!
I saw the Dan twice on the '93 tour and once on the '94. I nearly peed my pants during the first show--had never seen them and thought I would never get the chance. I must say, though that I was VERY disappointed that they didn't play anything from Pretzel Logic. Just an instrumental version of "Parker's Band" in '94.I've probably had 7 or 8 copies of Pretzel Logic over the years--wore out 3-4 Lp's, lost, traded a few casettes and now have it on CD for eternity--maybe I'll have it buried with me.
Steely Dan, just picked some albums never had. Great sounds. Anyway: Hey Bob Jiroutek: I readying my DanTent!!! D.
Somebody asked a while back if Roger "The Immortal" Nichols has a homepage. Nothing much there yet, but one under construction for his "Digital Atomics" company. Looks like it threatens to have some Steely Links too.
http://www.digital-atomics.com/index.html
I'd change the black background...otherwise a great site!
Brothers and Sisters:
I have been working my *ss off most of the day on the danvention and I have just one thing to say today: THANK YOU to JOSIE for her hard work and endless enthusiasm. After we all get home, sometime at the end of this summer, we will all have JOSIE to thank for what I am sure will be one memorable experience.
You call me a fool, you say it's a crazy scheme
Hello Baton Rouge (and the rest of the danPage): Thanks to all who have written in expressing their desire to attend this concept of "danStock." This thing is starting to take off, although we need many more attendees...Though you can procrastinate until late April, I really am anxious to get some numbers now. We'll be reelin' in more than the years at the danVention, and so anyone worthy of the epithet "danFan" would risk life and love for a place in the sun with their genetic equals. Last night I dreamt that Steely played Woolsley Hall. Of course I now realize they have become part of my metabolism. I'll see if I can get New England's answer to Steely Damned, "Pretzel Logic," to make an appearance too. The fall from the high after this danRendez-vous will be so Third World Man-esque I might have to move into a bunker. You know, preferably one filled with sand... "It's the dance, it's the dress, she's a concept more or less." .Josie.
Hello all. Check out "Dog Eat Dog" off the soundtrack for "You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It" and tell me what you think about it.
Ha. Are you an "insider" or a funny guy?
I vote for DanVention in LA. I've been a fan for a long time now. Got my Steely Dan T-shirt in Irvine '94. I've been playing Steely Dan tunes on the Old 88 Some time now. I like Pretzel Logic,Babylon Sisters, Josie, ta just name a few. Hope to see you at the party. TZ
Hello, one and all, To Peter, what's a smozzle and a schmeel anyway? I'm not your "real insider", solomente un tonto dicearle! I vote for Danvention anywhere the Dan play next, honey I will be there. See it glisten, KL
You know, I get bored at work and surf this page and have a bit of fun. I feel as if I know you all, and am living somewhat vicariously and thrillingly in regards to this Danvention (though, Josie & Scott, if you held it in San Francisco, I might even drop by...but only because that would be convenient for me. We could find a good Ajain restaurant in the Sunset district, if that would be a decent substitute). (And, you know, at this point I wish I had a Dan quote to round out my previous parenthetical statement, but I don't). Now if you could tell Lester to be a good little brother buy me the Dan Box Set for my birthday next month, then I wouldn't feel like such an outcast. (I, unfortunately, am a prisoner of my love for BonJovi, the Great Kenny G, and Jerry Vale). That would make me, at the very least, an informed man (again, alas, I wish here I had a Dan quote).
Now it's time to go to the King Crimson page, if for no other reason that I have fifty more minutes here at work. Good luck on the Danvention, y'all. Drink a big deacon blue black cow and get the hell outta here. I love you guys. I mean it.
Well Kitty, I'll have to apologize. I saw St. Alphonzo's little left jab at a potential fraud culprit and felt a deep-rooted necessity to respond after wishing someone who turned 48 a happy birthday. So, if it wasn't you, my regrets. By the way, Schlemeel and Schlemozzle (phonetic spellings) are Yiddish put-downs....(!) See you all in LA (hopefully) around Labor Day.....
Apologies accepted! Maybe we can meet him at the DanVention. I bet he's just an ordinary guy...KL
Hey Kitty!
Don't count on it.......
I hear you are singing a song of the past, I see no tears- I know that you know it may be the last, for many a years-
Just finished reading Brian Sweet's Steely Dan: Reelin' In The Years and highly recommend this UK author's version of the best band that never was! Published by Omnibus Press in 1994, 216 pgs with 24 pgs of B&W photos. ...So won't you smile for the camera, I know I'll love you better..
In case you care: I am going to finish listening to Alive, put on Aja and crash like a baby tonite. I will catch-up on the e-mails before weeks end. Gonna do just what I please
Hi folks! I'm really pleased to have found a place where other Dan fans converge. I'm a 25-year old night club dj in Fargo,ND and it's hard to find people around here that enjoy Steely Dan as much as I do. I have to say that nothing can make me feel as groovy as when I'm listening to a Steely album. Since I'm here, I'd like to ask a favor of any of you. I'm an amateur guitar player, and I was wondering if anybody had a copy of the Guitar For The Practicing Musician issue with the transcription of Kid Charlemagne. I can't seem to find it locally, and I'd really like a photocopy of the song and any Dan articles that were in that issue. Also I am completely amazed at the guitar solo in "Third World Man". It is so beautiful and moving. If anybody has the guitar tablature for this, I would be forever in their debt for passing it on to me. I'm afraid that I won't be online for much longer than tonight, so if any of you can help me out, my snail-mail address is 721 5th Ave. S. #1 Moorhead,MN 56560 Thank you, and don't forget to Turn That Heartbeat Over Again.
Respect the 7 second delay we use, during which it's like Christmas day.
Why has Omar Hakim never played on any of the Dan stuff? Kind regards...Tommy.
I was in my little cubicle listening to Steely Dan commenting to my co-workers that I wish that I could have saw them in they hey day. Then a buddy of mine said SD were comming to Vancouver. At first I thought he was pulling my leg. SD back togther? Got to be kidding. First in line to get tickets. First extended tour in 20 years! First time in Canada! The concert was fantastic. My favorite moment was when I was humming along to Hey Nineteen, Donald sang "Hey Nineteen, that's Otis Redding. She don't remember the King of Soul." I hope they decide to put out some new music, long overdue.
I LOVE Steely Dan's music. I appreciate this contribution to the net. Keep up the good work!
Greetings, like-minded individuals - I was riding my three-speed through the 'burbs in the spring of '73 when "Reeling In The Years" came crackling out of my red transistor radio. I saw God. Where were you when it happened to you? I'm the Toronto keyboard player behind the band Monkey House, whose 1992 Aquarius/EMI debut album included a Fagen-approved cover of his "Lazy Nina". The album is still in print, available internationally through reputable mail-order services. Many reviews of the album ("Welcome To The Club") noted the similarity in style between my humble project and the then-resurgent Dan. A new Monkey House album is underway. Also, I'm co-authoring a book on the popular music of the early-to-mid-seventies, specifically 1971-1975, that naturally includes commentary on Becker/Fagen and contemporaries like Zappa, Rundgren, Roxy Music, Curtis Mayfield, Little Feat, etc. Look for it this fall from a major U.S. publisher. We're assembling the visuals for the book now, so I'm looking for Dan or other early seventies memoribilia that would reproduce well in black and white. Usable submissions will result in YOUR NAME being included in the acknowledgements of a FABULOUS, GLOSSY BOOK. 35 sweet goodbyes, DB
Hey John, Ernie, Bill, and Lanny, of course not to mention Jimmie, youns' around for a little, Ummm... Clambake, perhaps, we can call it a DanBake? Somewhere 'Summer of '96, Anywhere, USA? D.
This is the coolest web sight, that's the net-essential fact.
I threw out my gold teeth and they rolled right into this great web site. This zombie was born again, my friend.
I'm trying to find people who have professional-sounding sequences of Dan material for swapping. This forum is very cool. I'm hoping to do the entire retrospective in Seattle, WA with local and visiting studio musicians. I'd like to make the concerts available to the 'net. Who has info? Thanks
To all interested zombies: Had a cross-country telephone call with Josie about 1 1/2 or 2 hours ago and our Danvention, DanStock whatever we want to it is going to happen in late summer. We are planning on a lot of planning so what we need is your vote on location and dates (please be specific). Most votes will decide location and dates. Deadline for voting: February 15, 1996. Results will be posted by February 29, 1996. E-mail Josie (tahia@minerva.cis.yale.edu) or myself. They say the times are changin' but I just don't know
Hello all Dan-fans! Anobody know the wereabouts of a Catalyst-lyrics collection? I'd do it myself if English were my native language... Keep down the bad work!
I vote for Danville, California!
Hi There What about a U.K DanVention. I know there's not much chance of getting Saint Donald Of Fagen or Walter over here but Iam sure we could do something. My band the bodacious cowboys have the sheer audacity to attempt to play their music and we could make some type of noise there. Iam new to the web and suchlike and will be a regular visitor to this page. please take me along when you slide on down.
I need help deciding if I should buy the Walter Becker solo CD. I have always figured that Donald Fagen was the only real talent in Steely Dan, but I love "Book of Liars" on the live CD. The words are great, the singing is surprisingly good, and I like the bluesy, jazzy sound. Are there other songs of this caliber to be found on Becker's CD? Donald will always be my hero, but I'd like to give Walter a chance!
Hi there all SD fans ! Looking forward to the Danvention. (I vote for San Fransisco, late summer)....I`ll be there, yes I`ll be there...The last days I have been listening to "The Royal Scam" over and over again...what a masterpiece!! Do any of you know the "band" Eye to eye (Julian Marshall and Deborah Smith) ?? Try it !DF was appearing on their first album in addition to several other excellent studio- musicians..Bye for now...
Sorry - Eye to eye - not Deborah Smith, but Deborah Berg
Hello DanFans! I'm back with an offer for all you fans! I recently bought a CD copy of the "You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It" soundtrack which is next to impossible to find. If any of you DanFans would like to trade me any of your bootlegs, etc. for a tape copy of the CD, you can reach me at the above e-mail address. That's all for now kids, meet me at 6:05 outside the stadium with your special deliveries! -Hoops-
I guess my brother is trying to force my hand by requesting the box set for a birthday present in front of a bunch of Dan fans who, of course, will say I don't got the love if I fail him on this request. I'm surprised that no one has helped me yet with "Throw Back the Little Ones," so I'll pawn my crown for a ride uptown. I just figured out that "The Goodbye Look" is about a vacationer getting executed in Cuba, not that that was particularly difficult. Seems California is way ahead of every place else. Would Kirschwasser be a cherry liqueur? Also, what exactly is meant in "Rose Darling," by the line "This spore is on the wind tonight..." Is it a reference to VD? Please guide me. Oh no, Here come those Santa Ana winds again.... Gotta go!
Wow! A Danvention! Musical type Fans to Unite and show their appreciation for the Musicians we all Love! Unite!! My hat is off to Mr. Walter Becker, musicians concerned, and of course, Doctor Donald Fagen!!!!!!!!! Unite, all us Scurvy (sp?) Brothers and Sisters, not to mention the Babylon types!! DanMusic has the answer!!!!
Hi Lester: Although I hear "Throw...Ones" enough (it's my 11 year-old cousin's fav), I'm still not sure what it could mean. It would take some more deep reflection before I get back to you. Literally, Kirschwasser translates into "cherry water" and so you were correct. I thought (and this may be a stretch) that the line from Rose Darling hinted at a pheromone-induced encounter. However, your interpretation sounds definitely plausible. As for the rest of you danFans, please send in votes for the danVention. Much appreciated...Josie. "While the music played you worked by candlelight."
Hi to everybody. This is Al&Gas briefly signin' in to breath a little of Dan-o-sphere. Workin' too hard, no time to prepare suprises for our Danfriends. As soon as pressure releases we'll be back in wonderland. Luvya all. Al&Gas
Thanks, Josie. You're the best friend we ever had. Speaking of "Josie," I have a pretty decent (or indecent) guess at what he's getting at with "Shine up the battle apple," but I'd like other insights. This is cool, huh, huh, huh, huh, huh.
You're welcome Lester. I have a feeling we may be onto the same thing about the "josie" quote, but let me know what you think it is anyway. I promise I won't be offended by any indecency. .Josie. "He's Become A 3rd World Man."
New to the net! Steely Dan was my fisrt choice for search! Dan fan since 72. I wondered if anyone else thought that some of the horn arrangements on the live album were a bit reminiscent of some of Frabk Zappa's (another favorite). Keep up the good work dan fans! I vote for S.F. also for the convention.
To Lester and Josie Kirschwasser is a rough brandy (aguardiente) made with a particular type of cherries, called "marasca". It comes from Austria and Germany, it's ruby ruby red and very very strong. If this note doesn't say anything new to you just drop it. Love - Al&Gas
Josie & Scott: what a delectable assemblage of Danfo! I play in a B/F band in Ottawa called "The Bootfish" who on occasion can knock off half-decent rends of tunes ranging from "Walk between the Raindrops" to "On the Dunes". For those in Eastern Canada, catch us at Greely, Ont.(a quasi home grown DanFest). I'll keep tuned on the REAL DanFest ...maybe we can bring the band down to SoCal, as we did for the Chicago '93 show. (which was totally wicked...) Anyway..thx again for the XLent page!!!
Hi everyone! From Kobe in Japan I send this Message. I didn't know about such a HOT SD fan's site until today. I've been watching SD for 20years , and my best pleasure was '94 SD-show in Japan. My most favorite is "katy lied". Anyway , thanks for the nice PAGE!! See you sooon!!
I just have time to point out one thing: To Brucer who posted this morning: I thank you, but can take no credit for this site or page. Your message should be sent to St. Alphonzo. He more than deserves the the credit! Gotta Go. And I'm laughing at the frozen rain
I know this is a stupid question, but I'ld rather ask then read through every piece of info out here on the the web . . . Is there something in the works by these guys, or is the Live album it??
So cool!Just found the site. Will be Back Many times, No flies on me! .
Although I missed the U.S. tour (they didn't come close to Kansas!), I think Live in America is a suitable fix until the next tour! It's a little on the short side and I bet it could've been a double. Kid Charlamagne rules!
Wondering if anybodys heard anything on a alive in america video or second c.d. Also, i have a piano\lyrics book on the first four albums has anybody seen anything on later albums. I'm sure up for a dan convention!
Got some vinyls Steely Dan from a record store up SFran, cassettes me not more? Any DanFan, AnyDanWhere, got a soundboard bootleg from the 'Record Plant' '71? I need better cassette copy, of that DanLeg..... D.
OOPS! One more DanThought! Santa Ana Winds Again, Drive West, On Sunset! To See All Our Friends Again! D.
Yeah, Eye to Eye's "Nice Girls" definitly had that Katzian SD sound-- great Chuck Rainey bass lines! I think the Danvention would be optimal in a central location so that both coasts could easily make it: maybe Cleveland, Chicago, or Indy? By the way, I think the guitar solo in "Gold Teeth II" absolutely rules-- does anyone know if it's Dias? That's my guess. Also, check out "Ida Lee"-- the hooters and the hats....
I have now officially had a Steely CD stolen from me. Gaucho was in my friend's CD player in her car when her car was broken into last week. They left the jewel box, and they did not take Kamakiriad, which was sitting on the back seat in its case. However, the thieves made off with a lot of my friend's possessions. There were fingerprints, so if they are caught, I'll be sure to demand a public hanging in the name of all Danfans. Why was there a three year layoff between Aja and Gaucho? I picked up a bootleg CD which includes the old version of "Brooklyn," and I dig it. Also, I heard a Muzak version of "Bad Sneakers" at a local department store yesterday. I was not expecting that, to say the least. Yes I'm going insane
Just discovered all the Dan stuff around these parts. Sitting in an office with "Bodhisattva" turned up and, man, were these guys The Man. As they would say themselves. Just some cool cats doing some of the best music around. Right On.
Lester...the shine up the battle apple line is paying respects to Charlie Parker, who wrote the song Scrapple from the Apple. And why not Atlanta?
Lester, include your email address if you need questions answered. The 3 year layoff between Aja & Gaucho was because. 1. They took a year off after Aja. 2. Becker had various personal problems. 3. Their favorite track got erased by an engineer. 4. Gaucho was legally delayed as both Warner Brothers & MCA claimed the rights to it. MCA won in court.
I hear you are singing a song of the past, I see no tears- I know that you know it may be the last, for many a years-
any major dude would love to attend this danfest at long beach island,nj.
I was just visiting DF's recording studio at http://www.aswas.com/riversound anyway, the boys just happened to be recording & they put me into chat mode & sent me some Real Audio files of the stuff they are working on to see how I liked it. It's real cool. Ok, Ok, I'm stretching the truth here... they were .WAV files.
I hear you are singing a song of the past, I see no tears- I know that you know it may be the last, for many a years-
I wanted to know are there any Danfans in the Chicago area. I live in Lincoln Park and if the Dan Summit is going to be someplace out west, well I might have a little bit of trouble getting there. So any one in the Chicago area or Illinois for that matter, E-MAIL ME!!!!!!!!!
Amendment: Kirschwasser isn't ruby red but white. As you can see danquotes spill from the unconscious in the most unpredictable ways. To Scott & Josie: as we already told Josie we won't be at the DANvention with our bodies. Too much distance and troubles for getting there. Anyway we want to tank you and all the people working at it, you are great! Just know that following you on the guestbook it's like to be there, we really feel ourselves into it. Thanx for the dream. Love - Al&Gas
Thanx Al&Gas. Still have a little ClamBake! TO DO! Musical appreciation is not boundless, 'specially for the 'Few" D.
Somebody mentioned a UK Danvention for those who can't "drive west on sunset to the sea" If there are any UK Danheads interested please mail me! This page is TOP. Tony Martin
"It changed, it grew, and everybody knew, semi-mojo, who's this kinky so and so, Papa go." I'm totally available for the danvention no matter where it's held. as long as it's in the summer. Betz, i hope you found me. Sorry about the steelers. :( anyway, pick yourself up and keep movin. I think I'm gonna check out the copy of "Becker & Fagen: Early Years" today. Been awhile since I've heard "I Can't Function" (honey when you run me down) Talk to you guys soon. Semi-mojo.
The Dan is the smoothest thing since butter. I like to chill out to the Dan, and drink Dr. Pepper
If it weren't for the Dan, I wouldn't be doing what I am today- playing music. Thank you, Donald and Walter, for being major dudes. Am interested in Steely Dan leadsheets for our band. We are called Eastern Smyle and are working on an album of originals(we think Danfans will dig it), but would like to do a bunch of Dan covers out live. If you have any in the Finale format, drop me a note at my address. Or, if you're interested in Eastern Smyle, drop me a note to help me decide whether or not a web page of our own is in order.
Hey All, I would like to vote for Big D (Dallas) for this Danvention you folks are throwing together. Centrally located, nice climate year round and home of the World Champion Cowboys. Can't get much better than that. I'll throw Josie an E-mail and hope you all don't vote for L.A. "Before the fall, when they wrote it on the wall, when there wasn't even any Hollywood"! peace DanFans Razor Boy
A "Danvention",so outrageous. I'm in. Since I live in St. Louis I think it should be held in East St. Louis. Toodle-oo
I saw the show at Roseland in NY. Unbelievable.
Greetings Scurvy Brothers & Babylon Sisters! San Francisco Show and Tell. A danvention in the City by the Bay would be the finest kind. Places to stay, lots of room to move, poetic scenery, a myriad of things to do and an exciting and vibrant music scene. She go crazy, got to make a getaway...
You've got to admit at this point in time the future looks bright. On that page of Steely Dan and glitter on the net by wire- -just want to say that the website is great.I've been a fan of the Dan all my life(I'm only 19).I really didn't become addicted until high school.Unhappy with the then new music.I listened to a classic rock station.I liked certain songs and remembered them from my childhood.I then found out that these songs were by the Dan.When I heard "New Frontier"for the first first time in the 90's, I recalled when I was small and seen the video on MTV.El legra de terzo mondo.Well I've got to get the test tubes and the scale out of here and put gas in the car. Won't you share my poison wine?
Becker was so bad I've moved to England! But really, If there is a simultaneous Danfest over her in the UK we could call it "The Second Arrangement. Scott can bring his Yellow Jag and Josie can bring her Yellow Bag? USA could have Steve Gaddd......we could have Wendel. bye from way up high in the Custerdome.
Hey fellow Danfans I'm here at the eastern world with klaus and the rooster listening to my copy of the rereleased Gold album containing those elusive don gems from the movie Bright lights Big City ( Century's End and True Companion). A Danfes t would be awesome I'd even bring the sausage and beer but So Cal is out of my range. Is it possible to get it moved somewhat closer to this side of the globe. We 've got some great dan fans on this side too for example check out one of the truly great dan tunes recorded for the Live disc in Char lotte ( Third world man for you unfortunate fans without this cd collection must!). Well I've got a big blond waiting in the dugout my dad built, we're gonna have a real wing ding!!!
Hey danfans I'm just sitting here with klaus and the rooster and we're pretty upset that all the festivities are going to go down in So Cal. Here at the eastern world were feeling left out. I guess we'll have to grab a couple big blondes some beer and Brubeck and head for that dugout my dad built and have our own wing ding!!! later fellow dan freaks
To all St. Dan junkies: I spoke to Josie today on the phone and even though we are both trying to catch up with our backlog of correspondence, the Danvention is right on pace. Right now, our only concern is date and location preferences. We will let everybody know when and by the last day of February. We will be e-mailing everybody again soon to get their date preferences if they haven't already let us know. Most people are not letting us know their most convenient dates. If you do not vote for a date, should we take it for granted that late August or early September will be OK? Labor Day weekend will more than likely be impossible due to outrageous airfares and hotel rates (not to mention availability). Keep the e-mails coming to me and/or Josie For one more time let your madness run with mine
To Josie, Dullwitted is how to describe the person who "typed" the word "yellow bag" it should read "Gladstone Bag". Hope this clears things up. Thanks Dr. Buzzard
Thanx Dr. Buzzard, It is truly a big DANworld out there. Some can only imagine the 'New Frontier.' I call the Dullwitted, an 'Inter Nit Wit'. Voyager Dave says.
let me know of any real developments in a danvention--like a specific date....but i think that an actual appearance or endorsement by the guys is farfetched. no time to talk now, later, maybe throw a kiss and say goodbye...
You walked in and my life began again.... Josie- Thanks for the email about Danstock (Danfest? DanCon?). I will by all means try to make it. No promises, but it's a great idea. Been a long time since I visited the shade of the Banyan trees. The Roseland shows were two days before my birthday, but I was unable to get tickets. WAAAAH!!! I did get Alive in America as a gift, though. So it wasn't a total loss. Anyway, I was so disheartened at missing the shows (and losing the radio signal during the preshow interviews) that I just got out of touch. Time out of mind... I won't be gone so long next time!
"Where the nights are bright, and joy is complete"...Not only on Green Flower Street, or even somewhere in Pasaic, NJ, but right here on this page. Pardon this uncharacteristic note of sentimentality, but I can remember signing in just about three months ago, and now I'm involved getting this mass convergence of danFans together for danStock'96. Can't say I'm a big blonde, but we can have a wing ding nonetheless (I'll be sure to put my hair up in a French twist). Gracious thanks to all you fans who have written in expressing your personal interest in this thing, and to those who volunteered themselves for the committee. Mr. Robins: your vision started something beautiful with this danVention. Thanks for it all. I assume this message is getting increasingly boring and starting to drag on. I just didn't want anyone to think I wasn't grateful. Then you love a little wild one, and she brings you only sorrow. .Josie.
This page is starting to take on a life of it's own. Kinda cool. Thinking about changing things around a bit. Possibly an image map on the main page. What do you think? Just a note to let you fine people know that I'll be in Virginia for the next 6 days. Keep this in mind when waiting for replies to e-mail. My grandmother is getting married! She's 86!!!! Who says love is dead......? StAl
Great Site, only wish I could have found it sooner.
Does anyone know where some bootlegs can be found. I would appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction. If one looks at the Steely Dan Albums site there is a con- siderable list of bootlegs out there. How can someone get there hands on them. I would also suggest setting up a spot on this Website where all of us could compare notes and the aforementioned as this would help in figuring out which ones we would want to buy (songs, sound quality, etc.) Don't lose that number!
Thanks for the info, Danhead9. Is this address better? I'm fairly new to AOL, myself. I'm getting a bit worried, here. Let's hear a little more for L.A., please. By the way, it was not good that Dallas won SBXXX, but I did win $50 from the second quarter score. This is the day of the expanding man.
Hey all! This is my very first experience on a bulletin..... Happy to see that this even exists..... Makes all this surfing worthwhile. I'm actually sitting here at a website-opening party here at World Cafe in rainy Venice, California. It's for YOU internet mag. http://youmag.com Check it out. There's a 6' 5" drag queen sitting across from me laughing FAR too loudly! Enough already! What else is going on in the world of DAN? Neeeeeed info. When's the next big event in So. Cal? Would love to have a wingding.... kid
