Meg - Fezo? Oh, that's a former regular. He used to post often way back. He became a lawyer since, he's pretty busy nowdays, he's a hardworking Ambulance Chaser back in West Virginia.

He had not much to say back then either.

Bill - need attention? Go to the chatroom and "have" a girl.

IcPaul - someone used my signature a scroll down. I did NOT say your lyrics was boring. Wasn't me.

StAl - my original statement? What are you talking about son? Couldn't we expand/stretch the discussion? I know that's not what you usually do back over there, but hey, give it a try!

 Whatevahappens,

Check out this website, www.kineticsurge.com/bios.html
Notice in the 3rd paragraph it says, "Lefebvre...has appeared
with such artists as Donald Fagen...".
He must have done some work with Donald but I don't seem to
be able to find his name mentioned in any of the Steely Dan
or Donald Fagen links.

Hutch,

I believe the 2VN Photography credits are...
Michael Northrup, Jason Fulford, Annalisa, Donald Fagen.
You may be right about Walter taking the shot though.

it's too bad the billionaire gloved one cried wolf throwing the the racist card at Mariah Carey's ex. This as RIAA and Time-Warner AOL Ted Turner Whatever are muscle Internet Radio into oblivion. The real truth is much sadder:

"Record Companies Can't Account for Their Practices-

What if you worked for a company for-30 years ù say, starting in 1967 and ending in 1997 ù and then realized the company had never paid into your pension fund? You'd be pretty steamed.

That's what happened to Sam Moore from the famous R&B group Sam & Dave. He had hits with Atlantic Records, which is part of Time Warner, like "Soul Man," "Hold On I'm Coming" and dozens of others.

Even though new hits stopped coming, the old ones kept selling. He figured that when he reached retirement, Atlantic would have been paying his pension into his union, which is called AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists).

When Moore applied for his pension, he was told that he had benefits coming to him. What a relief, he thought. Then he got the bad news. AFTRA was all set to pay him a whopping $67 a month. This is the same AFTRA that now boasts a $1.2 billion surplus.

That $67 figure came not from the money Sam thought he was getting from Atlantic, but from radio and television appearances he'd made over the years. It turned out that Atlantic had never paid one dime into his pension fund. Nothing. Nada.

Think of all the times you've heard "Soul Man" played on the radio, or in clubs and restaurants. Sam Moore was not getting paid for any of it.

Push has come to shove, though. Moore, along with two dozen or so other artists ù including some who've passed away ù-sued AFTRA and the record companies for their proper compensation.

It turns out, by the way, that you don't have to be a member of AFTRA to qualify. If you recorded songs for a record company that was a signatory of AFTRA ù- which means all of them ù-you qualify for a pension. And not just black artists or those from the '60s. The Eagles, for example, are as mad as Sam Moore about what's happened. [OK, that part's not so sad]

Last month, AFTRA tried to push a settlement through in the ongoing case. They offered to pay each of the plaintiffs $100,000 apiece, and let the rest of the recording artists twist in the wind.

But many of the plaintiffs, including Moore, objected, and the judge took them seriously. Moore figured that he was probably owed about a million bucks. So the judge told all sides to go-back to the drawing board and start over.

Tomorrow, all the attorneys involved in the case ù- representing AFTRA, its pension fund, the recording industry organization RIAA, the record labels, the plaintiffs, etc. ù- will meet in Scottsdale, Ariz., to start negotiations. It should be interesting since one law firm, Proskauer Rose, represents both the AFTRA fund and the Recording Industry Association of America.

The record labels are united on one front: They don't want to have pay about 20,000 different artists 30 years of back pension and health benefits.

At a hearing in Sacramento last week, Montell Jordan ù-a more contemporary artist whose big hit was "This Is How We Do It" ù revealed that he, like a lot of other music stars, had no idea he was supposed to get health benefits from his record company. When his wife gave birth, Jordan said, he brought cash to the hospital.

At the same hearing, music industry lawyer Don Engel, called the record companies' accounting practices "intentionally fraudulent" and compared them to WorldCom and Enron. Only, the record companies have been doing this since Elvis Presley wore tight pants. They've just never been questioned about it.

Jordan, by the way, testified that even though "This Is How We Do It" sold 2 million copies, his record company says he's never broken even with them or turned a profit.

I know another artist who had hits in the '70s, and whose record company says the same thing. My guess is there are hundreds or thousands more stories like these. They're all about to come out as the rock generation ages into retirement. If so, Enron is going to look like a cakewalk by comparison."

|  Hutch | Day: 31

Bill - The credits on 2VN give Walter a photography credit. I suspect it's actually the cover photo. Look at the shadows. Donald is standing there with his hands behind his head and Walter is snapping the picture. It's really an ingenious idea since they never had a photo of themselves on the cover of any of their albums. This way they're on there but not really.

A young kid came into the store this afternoon trying out Strats. He looked to be about 20 or so. I'm standing there telling him about the guitar when he starts playing the intro to Deacon Blues. He said he had just started getting into SD. There's hope yet for this new generation!

Also, when did Tim Lefebvre perform with Donald Fagen?

In the credits for 2VN, Walter thanks "Uncle K".

 MUSHROOMS

Overnight, very
Whitely, discreetly,
Very quietly

Our toes, our noses
Take hold on the loam,
Acquire the air

Nobody sees us,
Stops us, betrays us;
The small grains make room.

Soft fists insist on
Heaving the needles,
The leafy bedding,

Even the paving.
Our hammers, our rams,
Earless and eyeless,

Perfectly voiceless,
Widen the crannies,
Shoulder through holes. We

Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking

Little or nothing.
So many of us!
So many of us!

We are shelves, we are
Tables, we are meek,
we are edible,

Nudgers and shovers
In spite of ourselves.
Our kind multiplies:

We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.
Our foot's in the door.

To good not to share.

Clas -- you're doing something interesting. It's something people do when they're backpedaling and don't want to appear to be backpedaling. You're distancing yourself from your original argument by painting broad strokes so as not to allow us to finger you...

I see your point. In general we're all influenced by our environment, but that wasn't the intent of your original comment.

Best soundtrack. I'm diggin' the soundtrack to Boogie Nights myself right now. Singles is a good one for sure, especially if you're partial to the "Seattle Sound." And if you're not I don't want to fucking hear about it, so don't' bother... But the best soundtrack ever. Hands down -- The Last Waltz.

Randy- Next time you talk with Russell, try to catch his left hand in a door or something, he's too good to be playing without a handicap. I've got the "Sound of the Johnny Smith Guitar" CD- what that man couldn't do on the guitar is not worth doing.

Someone please tell me if I was robbed.

I was in Best Buy the other day looking for a DVD, couldn't find what I was looking for and since I can't leave a store empty-handed (my bad, I know), I started cruising the CD aisles...and what to my near blind eyes should appear but a CD called Walter Becker and Donald Fagan. It's put out by Park South Records and it contains the following:

Come Back Baby
Brain Tap Shuffle
Android Warehouse
Charlie Freak
More to Come
Parkers Band
The Old Regime
Roaring of the Lamb
Brooklyn
Sun Mountain
Any World that I'm Welcome To
I Can't Function
Mock Turtle Song
Yellow Peril
Stone Piano
You Go Where I Go.

I listened to it and mere words cannot describe my feelings on this.... I'm not sure I like it at all. Could this be their first recordings? Or a cheap imitation? Or is this a gem? I paid $11.99. Methinks I may have been taken. Since it was the only one there should I return it and claim manufacturing defects?

On the other hand I did find Joe Jackson's greatest hits double CD which is good for my 5K runs and the piece d'resistance (forgive my spelling), I found the Two Against Nature DVD. Again it was the only one there. It's incredible!!!!! The same PBS program I taped (and botched) about a year ago!

Does anyone else have this?

 Steely-folk:

Had a chance to meet and hang out with jazz guitarist Russell Malone last week when he played at Birdland in NYC; nice guy and a stellar player. If you get the chance, pick up one of his earlier albums (or CD as we should say), 'Black Butterfly' (1993) - if you can find it (it's apparently out of print). While no groundbreaker (who REALLY is anymore?), he's playing some great stuff.

Also in tow as a "fill-in" on drums was one Montez Coleman, who played with a rare subtlety and brimming fire as necessary; Omar Hakim's energy laced with the sensibility of Max Roach and/or Tony WIlliams. Caught him this past weekend again drumming for Grady Tate and he was very tasty; A player to be watched and a shoe-in for a few tracks on my album as well (if he returns my calls).

Also in the jazz section these days at your local shop is a reissue of guitarist Johnny Smith's album, 'The Sound of the Johnny Smith Guitar' (1960), remastered and newly "liner noted." The reissue is actually a compilation of two successive albums mastered to one disc. All original artwork, etc. Swings like mad. Check 'em out or don't-

just got a copy of the Beatles movie "Let It Be" on DVD....this movie has been out of print for over 20 years and I've been looking for a good quality copy of it for several years. You occasionally see the laserdisc of the movie on eBay but it's usually in the $300 - $400 range....a bit rich for my blood....but anyway, someone has started copying the laserdisc to DVD and they've actually done a great job with it....to see the Beatles in the studio, making the Let It Be album, is priceless....I remember seeing this movie at the theatre as a kid and it made a big impression on me....now, to see it again after all these years is just as magical....it's sad in a way, because with the benefit of hindsight, you can see that the band is disintegrating but the creative process and the performances are wonderful....I'd recommend this to anyone who's a fan of good music or enjoys seeing some of the creative process that goes into creating great music.

re racism: I work in a factory with over 2,000 people....slightly more than half of these people are Black....a few Hispanic and a few Asian but primarily Black....I work with them, I eat with them, I hang out with them both at work and outside of work....time to let go the old stereotypes of the southern white boy....the times they are a changin'.....I know, I'm living it.

 Hi gang,
Clas, my cousin is married to a beautiful black woman.. He was born and raised in Alabama. I happen to find dark men very attractive.I have always lived in the South. My First Husband was Native American. My Father was part Cajun. His mother, my Nana was darker then many African-Americans I know. No with my Mother's Irish coloring, I don't look very ethnic. However, two of my brothers look very much like my Nana. My point is locality had nothing to do with racism or prejudice. In my case, seeing prejudice (in any form) sickened me. It was a matter of right or wrong.
I haven't been visiting the for very long, but Dr.Mu doesn't seem to be prejudiced in the least to me.
Hutch, That was exactly the things that my husband used to say....about they way all his guitars sounded different. It truly must be a musician "thang". Tim would never have destoyed a guitar the way some famous musicians have...they were almost like his children. I understood because my paintings were like that for me. I'd love to hear you play some day.
Dragon, sorry things are not going well for you. I'll keep you in my prayers and thoughts. Bluz, the Boss ain't all that. I heard the New stuff a bit, and it sure isn't like Nebraska or The River. To me, he sounds weary...
Off to my garden, I got fresh tomatoes and corn now! Whoo hoo!
Be peaceful and loving M

Hutch- Bright Lights Big City is out on video, so you can get a chance to see it. I saw the movie myself. I thought it was very good. Michael J. Fox may never get any recognition as a dramatic actor, but this was his best in terms of that genre. And yeah, there were some Fagen songs that were in the movie, but never made the soundtrack. Apparently the record company wanted "hits". So they put out some songs by Prince and Bryan Ferry. Plus, some songs that I don't think made the movie.

Typical record company shit.

Anyway, saw the Today show. Bruce rocked the house. What did you guys think?

Hutch -- Marcelle Clements was DF's girlfriend for quite a long time in the '80s.

Besides "Century's End", I think he also wrote some incidental music that didn't appear on the soundtrack album for Bright Lights Big City. You have to freeze the screen during the credits at the end of the movie to see what it was. He also sang a version of the title song during the film.

Totally back up your irritation at "Chocolate Cake" on Woodface! It's a filler at best, a "Ringo", a hideous carbuncle on the face of a beloved friend (paraphrase). Anyway it stinks. The rest of the album is sublime, genius material, subtle, understated class. I was gutted when the band split but the Finn magic continues in other forms.
Lighthouse family?.........a resounding "NO". Insider gossip says the guy is a crap live singer....can't hold pitch. They must have dragged his vocals through some hefty electronic gizmo to keep it in key! Mushy MOR elevator dross.

There are obviously quite a few Pod fans here. I can see why - there are some great sounds in this box. Spent a while last night trying them out, and had a lot of fun.

Floridavid - I know there are few ways to feed things in and out. I've got the usual guitar jack going in at the front, and initially was listening on headphones. This is when I heard the buzz on the output. Last night I took line level outputs (jack) from the back to feed into my hifi. This worked fine - no hum or buzz at all, so the buzz problem seems to be only on the headphone signal. I've contacted the shop to get a replacement...

I'm sure I'm gonna have a lot of fun playing with this toy. I get to make loud and dirty guitar noises and not annoy the neighbours!

 hi all

the roots of racism?

clas - not mixing with blacks, hispanics, etc may also be a function of opportunity, that is, the lack thereof - vermont has the lowest population of minorities in the u.s., does that make them racists? it could certainly help it along, i suppose, out of ignorance and fear of an unknown - but is this always the case?

just a thought

This is from the Blue Bore:

Here is a direct quote from a "Winter 1989 Interview with Walter Becker" (Metal Leg, Issue 14, Fall 1990):

"Q. That's also surprising because you and Fagen have a reputation for being studio tyrants and telling each musician exactly what to play.

W.B. Not at all. We would go in with a piano chart that showed Donald's chord voicings and Donald would usually go through the keyboard chart with the keyboard player. Because if you just write chord symbols, everyone will play them differently. The keyboard parts, in most cases, were so integral to what we were doing that a lot of the ingredients had to be there in that way. But then the keyboard player was free to articulate and add things to that, so there was a lot of just blowing. And that's basically what was written, No bass parts were written. Usually, Chuck Rainey would listen to our demo in which I played bass and take the things off that that he thought were appropriate and just come up with the rest. And since Chuck Rainey was my favorite bass player in the whole known universe, I vastly preferred for him to do things instead of playing bass myself.

The guitar players had nothing written for them and they would come up with their own parts. We would listen and suggest things but there CERTAINLY WASN'T ANY SCORE."

What about that Doctor?

No, you don't.

I don't say it makes you a racist, I don't say IcPaul is a racist. I say: You were influenced by your environments when you grew up, and you just don't mix with that part of the population.

And when it comes to the Doc and his opinions on the Middle East conflict: he's flying blind because the Palestinians are Arabs.

 Clas,

You've got your geographical personalities wrong as it relates
to the United States. I've lived here a long time and seen most
of it so I'll tell you how it goes ok?

People from the major northeastern cities are known to be generally
cold and impersonal. This is not to say that you can't find
genuinely nice people there, but they're few and far between
compared to the south.

People from the south are generally friendly. At least that's
been my experience with them. They tend to acknowledge one another
and say hello. Keep in mind this is the bible belt and they have
traffic jams going to church on Sunday down there. They aren't
perfect, but at least they believe in something and they're
trying to be good people.

The southwest is basically laid back. I think this may have to do
with the fact that it gets so hot out there. I lived in Vegas for
four years and I can remember the temperature getting well over
100 degree consistently for months. When it's that hot you have
a tendency to just kick back and take it easy. Southwesterners
are good at taking it easy, and I can respect that.

The pacific northwest (I'm going to include northern california
in this too) is probably the most beautiful part of the U.S.
This is the main base of operations for the environmentalist
movement. You'll meet some fine people up out there and if you
visit you may never leave. It's that nice.

Therefore, your contention that the southeast is full of
meanspirited, racist cross-burners just isn't true and shows
just how much you really know about the United States.
You can't truly understand a country by watching television shows
about it. You've got to go there and walk the streets and meet the
people and then you'll know.

In your case, I'd say stick to the northeast.

|  Hutch | Day: 29

Molly - At last count: Seven electrics, four acoustics, one electric bass, a five-string banjo, a baritone ukulele and two hand-made dulcimers! The guitars are all "working guitars", in other words I don't collect guitars just to collect them like a some people do. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I have one Fender Strat, for example, with a solid maple neck and one with a rosewood fingerboard on top of the maple. They sound different . The maple fretboard gives a more high-end cutting sound and the rosewood gives it a warmer tone. Looks are really secondary in a way. A guy I know has about 120 guitars in his collection. And he doesn't collect old vintage stuff. He's into the high end Gibson Les Pauls with the highly figured maple tops on the body. Flame is the game! A lot of the most prized ones have a lot of horizontal shape to the grain of the wood. They call it flame. We have a stock broker who comes in and buys a $2000 guitar about every other week. It's nuts!
Walter B. did a little treatise on GAS... that's Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. It's somewhere buried in the ODP.

Heard Los Lobos' new album the other night. Really nice, very tasty. Rick Marotta plays on one track. Well worth a listen.

I saw a Steely Dan songbook recently that had (of all songs) "Big Noise, New York". That's a pretty obscure song to find in an SD songbook but I noticed the writing credit was DF and Marcelle Clements. Who's this Marcelle Clements? Was it covered in Sweet's book and my feeble brain isn't firing? And here's another thing I've wondered about for a while... did Donald write any of the incidental music in Bright Lights, Big City or was it just a couple of songs? I've yet to see the film or find a copy of the soundtrack.

Aussie, thanks bud... of course you are a sweetheart. Everyone here knows that.
Hutch, I love to go to music stores, and shows like you posted about. The guitars always seem as much a work of art as any piece of sculpture I've ever seen. They almost seem to have a soul.... I know that isn't a very good description, but it's the best my heat- addled brain can come up with. How many guitars do you have? My ex had 8. He insisted that they each had their own unique sound. While I couldn't see that they were that different in sound, they were all beautiful instruments. I figured he was just obsessed with having them! :) Like most collectors are. Even though I know f*** all about guitars, I enjoyed your post.

Clas: your logic is anything but. I was born and raised in Virginia Beach Virginia. I HATE racism in every single sense of the word. My cousins, all of which have lived in the Southern US all their lives, raised in the same basic family unit are split. 2 of them abhor racism. One is an outright redneck.

You cannot draw that conclusion. You should know better than that.

Though I don't agree with Dr Mu's eye-for-an-eye position, I've never gotten the impression he was racist. Never.

RoyScam -- how do you feel? MC? Ole? Dragon?

Sure, we are influenced by our environments as we grow up, but it's unfair to say Mu's position is based on this. The reason for racism boils down to one problem, and one problem ONLY -- Ignorance.

 Good morning everyone --

Last Thursday night, at our Pretzel Logic band rehearsal, Andy Metzger came to listen to us, and stayed the whole night - 4 hours. He liked it, I am happy to report. After practice, Andy joined a few of us Pretzel Logicians for a late night snack at Denny's (there ain't much else open in close driving distance from the studio in Van Nuys at 1:30 AM). Andy will be back to see us before he heads back to his home on the east coast on Thursday, August 8th.

I have now met 4 Steely Dan website hosts in the flesh (Andy, St. Al, Miz Ducky, and Oleander - Hello to you all), and I have spoken on the telephone to Hoops. Not bad. When you combine that with the fact that I have had the opportunity to play keyboards with all four Southern California based Steely Dan tribute bands (The Steely Fan Band, Doctor Wu, The Steely Damned, and Pretzel Logic), I must humbly say that my cup runneth over.

I have also swapped e-mail letters with Paul (Fingers) Shotan of the Danny Steel Orchestra in England ('Lo Mate!), and with the newly formed San Francisco Steely Dan/Stevie Wonder band, SteelyWonder.

Lots of feathers in my cap ... or, for those of you who remember the boy scouts, I've just filled up another achievement skin ... time to get another one and get started on it ...

We've decided to add Cousin Dupree to our set for the Hermosa Beach Festival gig. We think that the beach crowd will like that one.

See you all soon.

 Clas,

Individual guilt for societal injustice? I don't think so...
All you knee-jerk liberal cowards say the same thing, that
the individual should feel guilty for the supposed injustices
inflicted by the society at large. This is a total bullshit
argument that leaves those in the supposedly downtrodden
group off the hook for any wrongdoing whatsoever.
This Phil Donahue-esque version of macro-sociology was bullshit
back then and it's still bullshit today.

Rule 1)
I feel guilty (sometimes) for the wrongs that I DO.
I don't feel guilty for the supposed wrongs of the society at
large because I have no control over the society at large,
niether does LcPaul.

Rule 2)
I develop my own philosophies on life, I don't let President Bush,
Al Sharton, or YOU tell me what to believe is right. Who says
you and your friends have the market cornered on moral sociological
philosophy?

Rule 3)
There's enough guilt to go around. It aint just for white, middle
class American males y'know. Hell even Sweden's got a few things
to feel guilty about...how about that tacit acceptance of the
Nazi's way back when? I don't recall Sweden making a stand on that
issue do you? How about that African leader Idi Amin or whatever?
Brutally killed hundreds of thousands of his own people as I recall.
He's black isn't he? I guess that lets him off the hook.

Rule 4) DON'T FEED THE CLAS. Oh yeah...I forgot about that.

Now that I've got that off my chest, a bit of serendipity over the weekend. Was in a music store on Saturday with my girlfriend. A shreik and she produced "The Very Best Of Steely Dan" digitally remastered by Gary Katz himself. Not being as bigger fan as me however, she regretted it later, as she was exposed to it more than she fancied. Most of the "classics", 16 tracks in all, all for the equivalent of about US$7,00! Not usually big on compilations, but as I don't have a lot of the older stuff on CD, it was quite a find. I must say, "Babylon Sisters" really does it for me, as does "Josie". Shoot, truth be told, they all do it for me.

Also listened to "Woodface" a lot. Just gets better with age. Sublime music. Only I wish they hadn't put "Chocolate Cake" on that album. Think I'm going to edit it out.

Lighthouse Family getting a lot of airplay here - on now - not sure whether I like their sound. No, I think not.

Molly you biscuit, I'm a step closer to finding a stylus for my turntable. Should have it in my hot, sweaty little palms by Thursday/Friday latest. Then it's a weekend of spinning frenzy.

Take care

Love and peace

Paul

IcPaul - I am pretty sure I got it right. It will take generations, probably hundred of years for the white people in South Africa to get on the right track concerning the racist-issue.

Look how it is down in Louisiana or Georgia (that is USA), the white peolpe are nice and polite, but SO out/back in time when it comes to equality.

And if you are "responding" or not to me has nothing to do with that. It's not personal, it's just the way it is.

Hutch - Aha, a Pod! I've heard many people rave about these, and last Saturday I took the plunge and bought one (a Pod Pro). Have only spent an hour or so checking out the sounds, but I'm impressed. Great range of amp sounds, and nice effects. Great for neighbour-friendly recording as you say, especially if you're in the mood for some loud and dirty playing late at night! Glad you enjoyed my contribution to the CD.

I've got some low-level buzz on the headphone output though, so I need to check if that's a fault with the unit or not. Even with the output turned to zero and nothing plugged into the input, the buzz is there - doesn't sound right to me.

\/ IcPaul - you are born and raised in South Africa - that is no surprise to me you approve to the Israel Apartheid politics.

Clas - let's get a few things straight here matey. Just because I was (mostly) raised in South Africa, that does not automatically define me as a racist. In fact, just for the record, exactly the opposite is true. And, just for the record, I was one of the first people in line to vote for the ANC and Nelson Mandela in 1994.

And merely because I don't condone Palestine's terrorist actions, doesn't mean I do Israel's either. But then St Al pretty much said it best. I don't know what the solution is, but I certainly know what it's not. Suicide bombings are tragic wastes of life for people on both sides of the fence.

Now you have some facts to hand. And some elaboration on how I feel.

So, may I suggest, that in future, until you have done your homework, you keep your fucking stupid mouth shut, you offensive nicompoop.

Paul

Went to the NAMM show in Nashville last week. That's the National Assoc. of Music Merchandisers. Gibson threw a big party the first night at the Custom Shop. Very cool. I love the smell of nitrocellulose in the evening!
Didn't really see a lot that was new and exciting at the show but it was fun anyway.

Howard - Thanks for the kind words about Soon Morning. Yeah, the octave stuff seemed to fit best with the feel of the song. On the intro and first part of the lead solo it's my Gibson ES-135 which I had just bought, then it's a Strat on the second half of the solo. The acoustic on the outro is an old Ovation I've had for years. It's a steel-string but it came out sounding almost like a nylon-string on the recording. Most of the guitar parts were run through a Line 6 Pod direct to the track. It's a useful tool when you're recording at 2:00 AM in an apartment!
And I must say That Seven Feel draws me right in. Cool groove. Great guitar tone too.

I think everything on Steely Knives sounds just great and I'm truly humbled to be on the same disc with this level of talent. Just great stuff. Many thanks to Brett for putting it together for us.

Looking for Palestine? - it doesn't exist...the land of Canaan, Judea, Arabs, Crusaders (not the ones with Sample and Carlton), and later Turks was part of Syria and governed by the Ottoman Turks...

While biased towards Israel, this site's timeline and description of events is HISTORICALLY ACCURATE, something important in the age of relativism:

Should the second state of Arab Palestine finally be re-created and free elections held? Yes, but not under the egis of the PLO or any other terrorist organization. For example the Irish have a much better claim to Northern Ireland. The English enslaved the Irish for hundreds of years and brought in their own settlers from Scotland before (who's ancestors never, ever lived there) particularly under William of Orange (hence Orangemen). Their Protestant descendents are a good part of the population of Northern Ireland. Should Northern Ireland be given back to Ireland or become independent with self-determination? Absolutely, I'm of Irish descent on my father's side so I have some feelings on this. However, I do NOT support the terrorism of the IRA nor ever will...

http://www.hondacorporate.com/environ_tech/index.html?subsection=future

http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content=news&cat=4&id=224225

Clas: Then the Saudis will be "over a barrel." They'll have to beg us for the little oil we need which will be home-pumped or from Mexico and Russia. Frankly, if it wasn't for Colin Powell and pressure on the Israelis, Sharon would have wiped out every terrorist leader in the area months ago...

It's amusing that anyone from an isolationist monarchy, permanently neutral, Nazi-condoning (see WWII) country who is poorly informed historically would not be concerned that his opinion had the merit of a .com stock option (note: the practice of counting stock options as expenditures incidentally was revealed last week as Joe Lieberman's brainshild). A comment not a criticism - that "bite" could go into your exquisitely produced music...I'll do you a favor - if you are REALLY interested in the Middle East (and I am skeptical) start with David Lean's masterpiece "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) which chronicles the real-life story of an unconventional, vain Englishman (based on T.E. Lawrence's aut-biography) who rallies Bedouin tribes and Saudi Prince Faisel into driving back the Ottoman Turks in WWI from Aqaba through Damascus. Then read-through of the Koran and many the historical documents that chronicle the region from the Hebrew tribes, Bablyonian occupation, through the Roman conquest and Hebrew exile to the Arab conquest to the Crusades, and the grip of the Ottoman Empire through the British colonization to 1947.

I bet you didn't know for instance that Jordan as an post-modern entity was originally named Trans-Jordan as in "ACROSS the Jordan River" in 1920 by the British as an artifice when they cleaned up the Turkish mess post WWI. It was the home of a number of Bedouin Arab tribes. The capital of what is now Jordan, Amman, was built by the Romans and originally called Philadelphia. The population of "Jordan" is 2/3 what we would call "Palestinians," who were also a Bedouin tribe that roamed what is now Israel and the West Bank and Trans-Jordan. Thus the PLO is a small, terrorist faction of Palestinians, who mostly live in Jordan. Jordan's army invaded the West Bank and Israel in 1948 as part of the first modern war on Israel and occupied it until 1967. King Hussain declared war on the PLO in 1970 and kicked Arafat out of Jordan (trans or not) in 1971.

|  Mistress of Mayhem aka Molly | Day: 27

 HELLO EVERYONE!!!!
Jake, no problem sugarman! Keep the faith. Hope all is well.
Lcpaul, baby we need to get on the same continent... been listening to Dad's old reel to reel.... But reading about your list in Vinyl made me think about getting mine out to! My Dad and I both liked Neil Young's music. For awhile Neil would put out an acoustic album, and then more of a rock album next. My Father didn't care for the Rock ones... and would always say to me that ol Neil was using those damn drugs again whenever a Rock album was released! I never had the heart to tell him that Neil was probably using all of the time. You ever heard of Shawn Phillips?
St Al, I'm so jealous. I want details about Lyle!!!
Miz Ducky, hope the new adventure is going well! Check in with us girlfriend. I've decided to portray your image for now in a glass figurine. It'll take me awhile to master the new technique i'm working on. But someday woman I want to paint all of your gorgeous flesh!
Lp, How's things? Hope all is well with you.Hell if I were you, I'd run off with ol Aussie... He's a sweetheart!
Aja, Hi ! Hope you're well too.
Ed leave that light on for me! *wink*
Drew," Sybil" is blocking my messages again. You gotta think up better pass words! Our new friend is not what he appears... There are too many incongruencies. I'm not sure why he's lying? However, i'm pretty certain that he is. Pay attention to his body movements...and you may want to note the tatoo on his left deltoid. Please be careful! Call me if you can, I'll be home after 11:00 my time.
Dragon-man, who says I'd want to go back? lmao A Dragon and his Witch.... it sounds like a plan to me! Hope we can talk again soon?!!
Back to my garden
Be peaceful and loving M

Darkness in the morning
Shadows on the land
Certain individuals
Aren't sticking with the plan

Leaving in the evening
Traveling at night
Staying inconspicuous
I'm staying out of sight

They tell me love requires a little standing in line
And I've been waiting for you, lover,
for a long, long time
I've been pacing the floor
I've been watching the door
Meanwhile I'll keep searching for a heart

And I'm searching for a heart
Searching everyone
They say love conquers all
You can't start it like a car
You can't stop it with a gun

Searching high and low for you
Trying to track you down......

Mr Zevon may have been on to something, Don't you think?

Mid Cruiser - the New Orleaner's saying that one of your latest flowers name is "Vosmos". She's not sure.

StAl - yes, you and I agree.

Now, let me hear some anon coward bullshitter call Saint Al a Nazist.

Dano - really, have you BEEN to Sweden? Have you been to the Brightest Shining Beacon for Freedom and Justice? Man, you are a lucky Brit.

¦ - yeah, sure, keep on dreaming.

|  SCURVEY BROTHER | Day: 26

WHEN WILL THE STEELY DAMNED RETURN TO NYC???? SOON, HOPEFULLY.

|  Gina | Day: 26

well, my e-box is crammed with all kinds of Green Card Lottery emails, so might be an option to enter this all american style of trying to get in being a citizen for a while and try that Virginian feel. LOL

YGK, right on the three dots, when the Steely Knives cut into people's resistance for all kinds of non-reasons, these lines in your song elevated the whole thing too, that's why each year there are so many dimensions to this project :-)

Dano, i ate some reindeer. Hoping it would not be Rudolph the Rednosed ...
but then again, it probably was ...

Aah, Roy.Scam, you caught me redhanded, or should i say singlehanded :-)
the clinical name would be ... sorry, i just read the Bluebook and BwaySteve aka the ultimate acoustic Dan-interpreter wrote stuff that keeps ringing in my mind and i'm so easily destracted and keep thinking about marshmallows on fire at the Steely Knives Festival ... plus mr. Baker now made a commitment to performing in his underwear. Along with Schwinn's short skirt addiction and Ken Vogel doing a Jim Carey-like "oh no i'm a waiter again" stressing in the audience and some in the crowd seriously talking about the condition of this unique reunion etc etc etc.
Mindblowing fonts recently in these online places :-)

It's 03.30 am eurotime now.
Off to get some sleep ...

...Arafat refused to take the deal because he doesn't know how to (a) run a national government, (b) establish democracy, (c) build the foundation for a viable economy, or (d) psychologically deal with peace with the Israeli state (since he simply will not accept its existance)....

|  ╡ - mental, moral, spritual decline? | Day: 26

YGK: The Steely Dan bible tells us that our history and nature are twisted: art, civilization, what guarantees of freedom we have from our Constitution and those who have fashioned their democracies after us, and the ability to defend those rights are all that separates us from the Dark Ages or a Third Reich. The fact of matter is all people can't and will never all get along. Most of life is wonderful, and the opportunites to share thoughts, ideas, and create have never been better despite the stock market. However, personal interests with those we know well and even those we don't will sometimes clash. If individuals do not always get along, why should we expect nations not to have conflicting interests that are not settled in the best of ways? (chaos theory would predict this kind of fractal anyway.. We're just going to have to deal with the fact that it's going to take a Vulcan ship ("First Contact" for you Trekkies) to turn human nature around. The loss of or lack of respect for civilized standards of behavior and even more so standards of behavior (Janie
Runaway as a weapon of mass destruction) that are inherent (genetic) is more than disturbing, not that that didn't happen last century under Hitler, Stalin, or Mao. Removal of the heads of the various terrorist groups followed by a Marshall-like plan is the best hope. Your suggestion is noted and of psychological value...

Roy: Caves is a great stand-alone...I may have used fuzzy math in my explanation. In contrast, SiS, Green Earrings, and the Fez are all remarkable for taking simple song structures (even more so that usual) a expanding it in a way that every "nuance" that Marotta or Carlton or Klemmer or Grolnick contribute becomes a guy wire with the strength to hold up the Golden Gate Bridge...

St. Al: Remember in 1948, Jordan invaded the West Bank first in violation of the UN accord and held in until 1967...and we won't get into the historical fact that there is really no such thing as Palestinians or even Jordanians, just artifacts of a relatively brief British rule of Arab nomads and Jewish settlers from 1918 (after the fall of the Ottoman Empire) to 1947 in that corner of the globe. Arafat had every opportunity to get the whole thing back from Perez at Camp David with Clinton. Arafat refused to take the deal because he (a) doesn't know to run a national government, (b) establish democracy, (c) build the foundation for a viable economy, or (d) can psychologically deal with peace with the Israeli state (since he simply will not accept its existance...not coincidentally, that's when the suicide bombings started again in earnest. The irony is that then Arafat got just what he deserved, his own worst enemy: Sharon...a duel with muskets where they both remove themselves from the gene pool becomes a better and better idea...

...that or a Thousand Listens to Sting's "Gentleman in New York"

I keep remembering this quote from the book "The Unbearable Lightness of Being":
"Was it simply the hysteria of a man who, aware deep down of his inaptitude for love, felt the self-deluding need to simulate it?"
I think that line stuck in my head because it seemed like it would fit so well into Babylon Sisters, Janie Runaway, or Pearl of the Quarter. A lot of these Steely Dan songs strike me as a man facing the gap between his feelings and his romantic notions of what his feelings should be. Not that I've ever felt that way, it's just the way the songs strike me.

fezo~ A live festival of Guestbook musicians at Charlotesville, Va, sounds like a winner. I suspect that once the folks have seen the place, they won't want to return to their home cities and continents; we may have to set up a sort of commune for reborn Virginians.

Broadway Steve~ Unlike you, I didn't cringe at your Caves of Altamira cover. It's a great job on a song that's brutally hard to sing. You could have gotten pretty good odds at Vegas against doing an effective acoustic version of a Dan song; a task that sounds about as plausible as doing a John Williams tribute on the banjo. Might i suggest Kid Charlemagne as your next solo. It has that same cynical nostalgia as Caves and requires the same mid-word vocal adjustments. And you could convince Dr Mu that it's a great stand alone song.

Gina~ Great typo in your Post # 3654: "..I can be too serious for my own food." So that's your secret for staying slim. Does that particular eating disorder have a clinical name?

Can't we live together in harmony

Eye for an eye NEVER EVER works. Until we learn to fully understand this, we will forever be doomed as a species in conflict.

It doesn't happen often, but I agree with Clas. The only choice is for Israel to leave Palestine. Even then I suspect Israel will continue to suffer at the hands of terrorists. But like our "War On Terrorism," no one will ever "win." What the hell are you supposed to do? Why can't we all get along?

|  I love the smell of napalm in the afternoon | Day: 26

Poor Doctor ¦, cool off now... the only choice Israel has is to leave the Palestinian areas they occupy (illegal). The Western World suffers from a guilt trip after the Nazis and the Second World War, they gave the Jews a piece of land, on the expence of the Palestinians.

Israel are supported by USA, they are armed up to their teeth - the only weapon the Palestinians has is stones and suicide bombers.

Struggle for freedom is not a tea party, you should know that... but then again, you are buried in Texas...

You say; "The UN building is in NYC..."

Ha! Does that matter where the UN-scraper is located when you gringos so obviously don't care/know what's going on outside Kentucky, or was it Idaho?

And USA owed billion of dollars to the UN, which they payed immediatly after the Sept 11. That's a laugh, talk about hypocrisy.

Clas: Over there? The UN building is in NYC, you idiot!!I think ...and EVERYONE in the US is aware of the politics of said institution at the 3WM level...

Last night I saw a JOYOUS CELEBRATION of the surviving families of *children* suicide bombers hoodwinked by the former Hamas leader, Arafat and Saddam Hussain. The families held up large CHECKS (in color) from Saddam, who has promised one for every family who delivers a suicide bomber! You'd think Ed McMahon had just come by with the prize patrol!!!!!!! I was disgusted beyond belief. The terrorist leaders are a bunch of SICK FUCKS!! Israel has no choice but too cut off the head of these snakes...

|  C @ work | Day: 25

 ISRAEL SLAMMED AT U.N.

Israel was roundly criticized during the debate, with nation after nation saying Tuesday's attack was unreasonable and unacceptable.

Israel's deputy ambassador, Aaron Jacob, expressed regret at the deaths, but said the action was precipitated by the failure of the Palestinian Authority to stop Shehada, "one of the most prolific and brutal terrorists."

"Had we known the result beforehand, we would never have carried out the operation," he said. "Our regret is sincere and profound."

But Kidwa said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his "lieutenants" should be tried for war crimes and that the world needed to stop Israeli actions, whether on the ground or in the political sphere.

At least 1,467 Palestinians and 560 Israelis have been killed since Palestinians began an uprising for independence in September 2000 after peace talks stalled. Israel reoccupied West Bank cities last month in response to suicide bombings.

Hello. Sorry I've been away, but I've been busy with work.

Well, I have some bad news. After looking over some serious hotel, motel and lodging prices for Newport, I reget to say that I'll have to miss the Newport Jazz Festival this year.

I couldn't believe the astronomical prices in Newport. I had the train thing all wrapped up, but the prices on lodging was too much for me on my budget. Besides, I didn't prepare myself the difficulty in finding cheap lodging.

But I will be better prepared for next year. And when I do, and you guys
decide to go, I will look forward to meeting you.

Once again I'm so sorry.

But I'm busy (as i write this) searching for a new stylus for my turntable. When I get hold of one, it'll be re-visit the vinyl time, starting off with "Aqualung", "After the Goldrush", Weather Report's "8.30", Joni Mitchell's "Mingus", Jaco Pastorious, Steve Khan, Lee Ritenour, The Brecker Brothers, Deodata, Tom Scott, Mike Makgatlamele, Miles Davis, Larry Carlton, Average White Band, Royal Scam, Gaucho, Nightfly, Kamakiriad, Tananas (local - stunning - just guitar, bass, drum), Norma, La Traviata, Fidelio, Phillipa Giordano (highly recommended), The Blessing, Vivaldi, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors, to name but a few. Also been listening to Neil Young's "Harvest" on CD a lot.

Can anybody tell me the title of Bob Dylan's new album? Heard a song on TV and it sounded sublime.

Clas, still trying to offend everybody here? lol lol Well at least you're consistent. :) I just love reading about you computer preferences/problems, and your musical arguments with Mu and Stevee. Then all those insults...It's a real contribution to this guest book.
Midnight Cruiser, when you gonna take me for a ride on that bad boy? :)
Jake, I had drinks with my bud Jon last night and gave him your CD.... He said he'd do what he can. I hope things are going well.

Well the Gorge is beckoning....
Peace and Love to you all (especially you Clas)

Roy Scam - "Wouldn't it Be Nice" - that was the track! When I posted yesterday I couldn't remember which one it was on the TV show, but they had about 20 seconds worth of vocals from WIBN. Amazing. If there's a CD of this stuff, I better get an order in!

Altered guitar tunings: it's fun trying these. As you say, there's an element of learning from scratch as you suddenly have to relearn all your chord shapes. I like Joni's comment on this, about it being like going to a typewriter and finding all the keys keep swapping places.

I think the most unique thing about my performance on Caves was that I'm standing there in my underwear, experimenting with doing the guitar to a click rather than just wingin' it. The result sounded acceptable and since I really couldn't hear the click in the playback, I decided to try a vocal.I listened to about 10 seconds and almost hit delete but something in me made me save the take. I cringe when I listen to it.My intonation is horrible , my timing is way too loose for doing it to a click and my New Yawk drawl is way too downtown for even a Fagan song.I must admit though (and I'm sure any recordist would agree) that a first take has a certain quality that forgives many wrongs and captures a kind of vulnerability that helps in a minimalist production like this.I think singin' it in my drawers probably did as well.

I am very proud to have been a part of this project.I have enjoyed my association with this site and have found the Sunday night chat to be a great way to counter the dread of having to spend another week in a body (on Earth). Having met a few of you from week to week I have come to realize that some of you who seem really scary in print can be incredibly lovely one on one.
Steely Dan fans are very special.
After the human genome is more thoroughly studied we'll probably find out why.

Get up off the couch Donald!

And who is this? Oh, this is your friend Walter? Well WALTER, do
you think that my good coffee table is an appropriate place for
your feet? You do? Well you just stay right there and I'll go
get my broom from the kitchen and show you what your ASS is for ok?
Just wait right there....

If you and your friend aren't gone by the time I get back from the
kitchen Donald the nieghbors may have to call 911 again!

I know you two...you're in cahoots together...all hopped up on
goofballs arent you? And don't think that I have'nt noticed you
eyeballing my daughter either mister! You...you..you SEX MANIAC you!
You leave Janine alone, you hear me? She's your cousin!
It's against the law to think those kinds of thoughts young man!

Are you still here Mr.Walter? Well what the hell are you waiting
for son, valet service? OUT, OUT, OUT! And don't come back until
you get a haircut!

LP: Alas, Dr. Krueger and yours truly were recently busted for impersonating a kitchen clean A-frame. Now I can't even prescribe cyclic anti-depressants, but can give you an Rx for (bi)cycling...keep your ties (on the) skinny...

ROYale with cheese: Viva la difference! gotta luv the rock funky blues of Kid C...while I hum the Broadway fake jazz of Glamour Profession. I'm a sucker for the Gaucho/outtakes/Nightfly/abandoned follow-up period show tunes of The Donald...and Almost, well, there's that Bridge! They're the lynchpin of songs like Jack of Speed, What a Shame About Me. West of Hollywood...methinks the bridge thingy is one of D's tricks like the bridge(s) on Century's End, since I don't think there is one on 11 TOW...

Kid C does remind me of another favorite recording: Caves of Altamira. The problem with Dan lists is that they must end, but where should they and even why? The horn charts are the meat of the recording, but really take the place of tasty key chords that are the center of most of Dan's compositions...

Tha leads to when have the Dan done the most with so little?? Beefing up a minimalistic blues ditty. 3 from Scam stand out: the Fez, Green Earrings, and Sign in Stranger. Each approached from a different jazzy angle...It seems that SiS and Green Earrings were ripe for the musicinas of the 90s tours to stretch out and show their chops...and of course there's the Ellington fake outtro on SiS AiA-style or is that a BRIDGE?!!! It seems the tour tunes are often chosen not for the songs but their ability (or excuse) to lead into an extended tight jam...any more?

|  Molly | Day: 23

Hello everyone!!! I still haven't ordered my copy of Steely Knives. But, after hearing how much everbody is enjoying listening to it, I plan to get a copy soon.
Made blackberry jam today ( I thought of you Dave!! )
Fingers, My Dad used to say something very similar! Your post made me smile. My favorite quip Dad used to make was about the word "if". We'd be complaining, and we would say "if the circumstances were different........"
My Dad would always reply, " If a frog had wings, He wouldn't bump his butt everytime he hopped" No excuses, nor explainations for him! Thanks for the message. :)
Duncan, you're a sweetheart! No worries bud..... hope you're feeling better.
Gina, it's been a very long time since I've read anything by Nin. I've always admired her courage to live her life as she chose. I guess i'm not very imaginative Gina..... I tend to be a flesh and blood girl. I want to be belly to belly, with arms, legs and tongues intertwined. I don't read erotica very much, I'd rather think of a lover that I actually had. I like flirtations. To me it's a way of acknowledging a person's allure or their "essence". But that's just me. If we were all the same, it would be a really boring world. Glad we're still cosmic sisters. :)
lcpaul, still in a funk over Gwen's upcoming nuptials? What are you listening to these days? (besides Steely Knives)
Robbie, if your not crazy, you're giving a pretty good impersonation of an insane person. I don't even know what to say to you anymore...
Bluz, nice talking! Tell me I'm still your favorite witch! Talk soon? !!
ST AL: You are still the best looking man I've seen in a month of Sundays!

"The Nearness of You" wasn't the best introduction to miss Norah Jones, and sometimes certain standards stick like glue when the memory of a strong interpretation at a certain time and point can't be overruled by something new! But i was convinced yesterday when in a right ambiance some other tracks of the CD came to my ears. Bought the CD today. So it's two Jones' now keeping me company in the quiet and solitary hours :-)

Hutch, would you prefer mp3's so we can send you tons of fine music?????
Lenny Breau, Pat Martino, a nice Pat Metheny-Dave Brubeck-BB King collaboration ... there's way too much to choose from LOL

Molly, i agree the Diaries of Anais Nin appeal to the finer senses and that's why flirtation and the obvious goals involved don't appeal to me. I often feel it's too easy that way but i can be too serious for my own food sometimes :-) Nice you did mention Anais, because she found a lucid way, a detailed way even of writing about the things on her mind, her life and experiences showing the subtile bond between sensuality and intelligence.
Sexuality a strange world of emotions anyway, from primary instinctive to a breathtaking vacuum perhaps when some sugar falls from the beignet onto a black dress :-) depending on the moods, right?
Different tastes for different folks.
Viva individuality ...

Cara Mia! Resurfacing again, how are the critters doing?

Geena, there's no such thing as wearing a T-shirt with pride sometimes, is there? Do you have a Sign In Stranger Banyan Trees T-shirt ..? If not, those are fun to wear too. Really! Especially when the online stuff gets tensed and you decide to take sides :-) Self-mockery included, ofcourse!
Oh i just luve the internet sometimes ... So, are you gonna get yourselves a yellow SIS shirt too????

What about the British equipe around here, have you ordered your Banyan T-shirt yet? It's almost "not done" to send your fonts across the big pond without wearing one or have one, at least.

Okay, off to take it slow today.
Not enough sleep and loads of music the last days.
And the good thing about middle fingers is, they are stuck in between the others. So easy to crush that way ...

Banyan Tree Bow,
G.

 Brett -

|  Roy.Scam | Day: 23

Howard~ I didn't get to see that beach Boys special, but your mention of the vocal-only tracks reminded me of a limited edition Beach Boys CD on Capitol records, 1998. It's called "Essential*the Beach Boys*Perfect Harmony" and contains some vocals only versions. The vocal track for "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is amazingly good; it's a masterpiece of a recording even without the instrumental parts.
BTW, I'm not sure if this is the technical term, but i like the way you truncate the guitar notes on "That 7 Feel". Gives it an almost 'backwards' sounding texture.
Good call on the open tuning on my Steely Knives entry. As I recall, it's a 7-5-4-3-5 pattern. My first attempt at writing chord progressions in that tuning; it requires a bit of concentration subliminally remembering which shapes work and which ones clank. Also it was my first attempt at home-recording and mixing 4 tracks. as you pointed out, the mix is inconsistent, largely because vocal and acoustic tracks tend to vary in volume when the dumb ass performing them jumps around like Stevie Wonder.-- My tendency is to spend a month writing a song and 10 minutes recording it; not very Dan-like.

oleander~ You've created a catalysm in the confectionary corner of my cranium. and Thanks for remembering my 12 string; actually this time I used on old 9-string,a sort of hybrid.

Urban Legend?~ The eery coincidence you mentioned (The suicidal man jumping from a building, accidentally killed by his own family by a shotgun blast on the way down.) was , I believe, mentioned at the very beginning of the movie, "Magnolia". The film goes on to embellish on the idea that, not only does shit happen but , sometimes some really crazy shit happens.

Cruiser~ Boss ride. Important Safety Tip: While riding, please take care not to flip off any rednecks in pickups a la Dennis Hopper. If it's absolutely necessary to do so, at least tuck your hair up under your hat.
Did you say you and Shirl are going to travel together on bikes?
Regarding the live versions of Steely Knives songs, I suggest that, since our state (Virginia) is almost precisely centrally located relative to the contributors, that the "Live Knives" concert be held here. Sort of a mini woodstock. Will that be a problem for you people in Europe and on the west coast? Hutch and I will supply refreshments.

Mu~ No amount of your silver-fonted, cleverly phrased analysis can make Glamour Profession a better song than Kid Charlemagne. Almost Gothic is pretty, but is more of a holograph than a song.

You wouldn't know anything about being stronge
They violated her in every way possible
They tortured her by burning her
They beat her with a tire tool
Almost destroying her beautiful little face
She was in a coma for 26 hours
I know. Because I waited with her family
to see if she would live
Her brain was swollen and bruised
The Neurosurgeon and Neurologist told her family
that she had less than a 20 percent chance of surviving
To expect the worse if she did make it
Plastic Surgeons put her lovely face back together
Gynogological Surgeons fixed her womanly parts
Months of Surgeries
Months of Rehab

After she could tell us who hurt her
I swore that I would make them pay
They went to prison before I got the chance
I never knew her plan
She got religion
Not me
I still hate them
They will pay
I always settle my debts

Three left

 HOWARD

Too right ....I saw the Beach Boys programme too..just wish I'd got it from the start and recorded it. A great, informative and revealing documentary...totally absorbing.
Brian went through the mill and back and is clearly a musical prodigy...especially when you see what else was around at the time. The pity is that the fickle "pop" world has no time to wait around for those who pursue their visions for anything longer than a week!. Up and (On?) wards? It was such a relief to hear him talking with such gusto and energy still ..it dispelled my fears that he'd "flipped" afer seeing him recently in the Party At The Palace thrash!
A genius for sure..and so wonderfully modest, and supportive to others he revered.

DUNCAN
I'm sorry I've missed out on the threads.....you have had another loss?
Clearly somebody well loved and respected? Sincere condolances to you and Linda. I hope we can get to see you soon and catch up on life, the universe and everything?
The "goodies" will be a while coming.....we have to mix, do the artwork, track list, name for the album etc etc....but you are on the list for the first deliveries.....ok?
When and what time is that Radio 6 show due to air?

MOLL
There are many shits in the world, just step around them, don't tread in them....they just stink all the more! Stay strong.

lcpaul - it was me that mentioned "Voices of Life" by the Voix Bulgares a while back. My copy has been ordered, should arrive in the next few days. Would be happy to swap thoughts about it later on!

UK folk - did anyone else see the great documentary on the making of Pet Sounds on TV a few days back? Superb. In one section they played just the harmony vocals from one of the tracks - sounded like pure gold.

 Midnight Cruiser,

But of course Midnight Cruiser would ride a Midnight Star.
At least some things in life still make sense. But eventually
you know what will happen right? Some easyrider refugee will
ask the inevitable question...

"Hey man, why did'nt you buy a Harley?"

This question is usually followed up with an especially stupid
laugh and a dumb look. This comes from the fact that the person
usually asking it is especially stupid and dumb. I've been asked
that question more than a few times over the years and have
always responded the same way, it goes a little something like
this...

Why did'nt I buy a Harley?
Yeah man, why not?
Well first let me ask you a question ok?
Ok, shoot...
If you could have any car you wanted right now, which would you choose?
Oh that's easy! I'd choose a 'Vette...or no, I'd choose a Ferrari!
Why?
Because a Ferrari kicks ass man, that's why...
Ok, so engineering and performance is important right?
Damned straight it is!
So why would you want to buy a Harley Davidson then?
Huh?
Well Harley Davidson aint exactly the pinnacle of engineering you know.
It aint?
You don't believe me?
Hell no!
Ok then, how would your Harley do against a Suzuki Hayabusa?
That aint fair man!
You're right, because Suzuki makes a much better bike than Harley.
They do not!
Also, Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Triumph, and Kawasaki make better bikes.
Man you're nuts!
I am? Statistics show that they have far fewer breakdowns than Harley.
So?
So...Harley sucks.
It does not!
How many horsepower does your Harley produce?
60 horse!
My VTX makes 100 hp at the rear wheel.
So?
So...you'd have to sink another 10 or 12 grand into yours to get that.
Yeah, so?
So...Harley sucks.
It does not!
And what about the Harley Davidson V-Rod?
YEAH!! The V-Rod kicks ass man! Hehehehe...
Yes it does...but it's not an American motorcycle.
WHAT! It is so!
Nope...Porche designed the engine. Porche is German you know...
Huh?
You did'nt think Harley could do it on thier own did you?
What?!!
Yep, Porche did a good job on that bike.
Damn...I still like my Harley man.
Good for you, just don't think that your bike is superior ok?
It is!
Ok brother, have a good day...

 Rock Casbah Hill

Now James Moeser told Faculty Senate men
You have to let the Rasta drop
Basket weaving down for the desert way
Bring the GPAs to the top
The sheik brought the Koran
He went a' cruisin' down 'ol Chapel Hill
It's mandatory for Class of '06
Before we head to Franklin grille

CHORUS
The sheriff don't like it
Rock Casbah Hill
Rock Casbah Hill
The sheriff don't like it
Rock Casbah Hill
Rock Casbah Hill

"Bookstore order the Prophet"
No more Boogie Night sound
Degenerate the Greek faithful
In that funky Casbah town
But the Bedouin brought to class
Electric Cameron Indoor drum
The electric sitar picker
Got Jack Horner III's thumb
As soon as Abdul Shareef
Slam dunks in the square
Dougherty's kids begin to wail

CHORUS
The sheriff don't like it
Rock Casbah Hil
Rock Casbah Hill
The sheriff don't like it
Rock Casbah Hill
Rock Casbah Hill

Now over at Duke chapel
Oy! They really pack 'em in
The in crowd say optional's cool
K digs the chanting thing
But as the wind switched direction
as the chapel band swings the trench
The crowd caught a wiff
Of that crazy Casbah stench

CHORUS
The sheriff don't like it
Rock Casbah Hill
Rock Casbah Hill
The sheriff don't like it
Rock Casbah Hill
Rock Casbah Hill

Dean Wormer called up his jet fighters
He said "separate church and state!"
Drop your supeonas between the minarets
Down Casbah before too late

But as soon as the sheriff was
Chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to
The Franklin Street blare

As soon as the sheriff was
Outta their hair
Bunny and Bob Marley wailed

CHORUS
The sheriff don't like it
Rock Casbah Hill
Rock Casbah Hill
The sheriff don't like it
Rock Casbah Hill
Rock Casbah Hill

One copy of Steely Knives on order here. Can hardly wait to have this aural treat.

Hello everyone. Coming out of lurkdom to say a big howdy to my GB friends.
No news from these parts of southern Apalachia. I am concert-deprived, and I won't even go into the horrible drought I suffer in the romance department, but we can keep hoping...

As Joni puts it:

Oh there must be more to livin'
Than a mortgage and a lawn to mow...

If there's an ACC gathering in the fall, I will be there.

For my hypothetical Dan content:
I wonder if Miles Davis were alive if he would have appreciated the sound he could have made with Caves of Altamira? Don't you just hear a haunting trumpet in that melody that might be played in his languid style, stretching out those "falls" and "halls" and "walls"...?

Must be the heat...
