Cool thought.

Spaz:

I vote for 6 backup chicks. One blonde, one brunette, one redhead, one Oriental, one Black, one Mexican. All in miniskirts and go-go boots. And they should touch each other in a friendly manner when they're singing. And kiss each other during the instrumental breaks. And have pillow fights and tickle each other.

Doc Kelly Here at the Dude Ranch Tue Jul 1 16:17:44 PDT 1997

Anthony: There are a multitude of items brought to the Steely Dan table by Walter and Donald... not just the obvious ones... while it may seem to you that Walter takes a subserviant role both on stage and record, I submit that Walter's friendship and the way he acts when they are together provides the unique environment in which Donald's genius thrives... don't take this notion to an extreme, W.B. is much more than a catalyst! You know there's got to be some ying/yang action happening there! Walter may be in complete control within the confines of their personal collaborations...

Similar to McCartney and Lennon. If you listen to their individual works it's quite apparent they both writing styles uniquely their own. But when they wrote together they were each able to contribute from their individual strengths and produce something where, IMHO, the final product was greater than the sum of the individual parts!!!

Or at the other end of the scale is the role Bernie Maupin played in Elton John's success. Bernie didn't perform on stage with Elton but his influence/presence is undeniable.

It's been my observation at the 7 shows I've been fortunate to attend ('93 thru '96) that Walter was in charge of several cues... almost all of their dialogue was scripted... the introductions occured at the same point in each show... the little "asides" Donald would take during certain songs were virtually identical at each venue... when either Walter or Donald is soloing they each have enough control that they could lengthen their own solo if they desired to...

They are a team when they are at their best! Just my 2 cents worth...

Hank Silvers c/o Hugo Spaak Tue Jul 1 19:22:50 PDT 1997

Joe M: I just received a note from Audionet, as follows:

"The Blue Note Jazz Club features a live performances by guitarist, producer and composer Larry Carlton. Thurs. July 3 - 8:00 pm (Central Standard Time) http://www.audionet.com/concerts/bluenote/ "

If you've got RealPlayer or RealAudio, even if you're in the hinterlands, there's your ticket, such as it is.

Gk R Us--I called you a Geek, not a Cretan. It's all Geek to me on this GB anyway. Tell you what--let's talk about this purported SD misogyny when I get back.

Doc K--Right on. The Dan is but one of many dynamically synergistic artistic relationships, not an arm-wrestling contest or a D & O tryst. I love being able to hear their intricate interplay....I can't think of many things in life more wonderful than to have that kind of long-term creative relationship with another person. There are certainly lots of examples in which big egos soured such a gift--isn't it amazing it didn't happen with B & F?

Kinkmeister--are you passing through or are you actually only spittin' distance from here?

St. Al--please. Pink is NOT my color.

Aloha all--see you in 2 weeks.

"BOTH EARS NOW"<\strong> (Mike Tyson's Lament)

Moans and groans of crowd despair
I create riots everywhere
Bit and pieces fly through the air
I've chewed at ears that way

But now officials block my fun
They claim I chomped, now Evander's won
So many things I would have done
But his ears got in my way

I've bitten ears from both sides now
From left and right and still somehow
It's bits of ears I recall
Don't really need no prize money at all

Hooks and jabs and make them kneel
The dizzy dancing way they reel
But it's my teeth they're gonna feel
I've incised on ears that way

I've gnawed on ears from both sides now
From left and right and still somehow
It's ears' bitter taste I recall
Don't wanna parole violation after all

Jeers and sneers and public growls
They say, "He's like Daumer!" right out loud
Police teams, managers, and rowdy crowds
I've looked at their scowls directed my way

But now my rented friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I'm deranged
But something's lost, and stitches remain
I've looked at ears that way

I've looked at bouts from both sides now
From win and lose, and still somehow
It's cheating and pleading I recall
I really don't know fair play at all

I've looked at bites from both sides now
From rips in skin, administered with mouth
It's ears like Van Gogh's I recall
I really don't do "Turbulent Indigo" at all

Okay, I recently came across a copy of a 1993 Steely Dan tour video at the local video store (yeah! right) and I was curious if anyone could tell me which show it was. The tape is listed as a 1994 show, but Pete and Drew are playing so I eliminated that possibility. The only thing that might help is that there is a MALE backup singer instead of Catherine Russel. If anyone can help, I'd be appreciative...

Well Doc, I thought about your post where you proclaim how this Donald being in charge thing is scripted. Well, that's even dumber than my theory. (please note I am referring to your theory and not you) Can you imagine going along with a sripting that makes you look subordinate...to what end? I say if Walt did go along with that scripting it only proves my original point. And as far as this yin-yang thing, I'm not sure I agree there either. I think they're friends who hang together cause that's how they make it. On their own, each of them is far less commercial.

Did someone mention Jackson Browne? Talk about a guy who's performing long past his commercial prime. Well, I guess there's just no substitute for the Summer of '78.

OK, Edd, can you clear up this YGT debaucle?

c c@e Sat Jul 5 22:33:59 PDT 1997

"Did someone mention Jackson Browne? Talk about a guy who's performing long past his commercial prime. Well, I guess there's just no substitute for the Summer of '78."

No kidding? Is that so? Have you seen Jackson live? He sings his early stuff, he sings his new stuff, just as the new Steely does.

When I was around twenty, I heard Steely for the first time. It was like coming home. For almost twenty years I did not read any interviews, hardly saw any pictures of the Guys, except for those who was on the albumcovers. I had to settle with the music, the lyrics, the arrogance and cynical stuff that I loved so much Now I have read and heard enough and my obsession (not an ANAL this time princess Mandy (Dean Parks daughter for those who did not know)) is fading. I guess that the Big Guys are not doing themselves a favour to come back as men who come in from the cool. Like trained dogs that don´t piss and shit indoors anymore. So, maybe Anthony above is right, you have your primetime once. Try to do it again, it´ll only be a pathetic reproduction of the past. And a few more dollars on the bank.

So, maybe I am doing a Gaucho here. We can´t dance together, we can´t talk at all.

So let me ask a last question, to mr Fogel; did they pay you or did you pay them?

Clas Lundkvist

Just gonna chime in on the weekend tip and the experience I had with my half Puerto Rican-half Scottish Goddaughter. Once again, in Prospect Park's Bandshell, we were treated to a night of terrific music. This last weekend, it was DLG, or Dark Latin Groove - quite the urban sound - full horn section, two percussionists, great piano set up and sexy, sweet singers all the way down. I had my goddaughter on my shoulders for 45 minutes (ouch) - I could feel her groovin' to the tunes - and diggin' her own heritage.

BTW - DLG's new release is gonna "drop" Aug.4th - if you have a penchant for hot Latin music by a talented young bunch of players, check them out.

Hello everybody,

I have been amazed by Steely Dan's music for about 6 years now. And still I can't get enough. Very strange, because I must have listened to those records millions of times. The concert in Rotterdam on september 5th 1996 was a beatiful experience. Especially the opening song "Do it again", for which Becker and Fagen changed the cords in a certain manner. My favourite track must be Glamour Proffesion, which was performed during the concert!!!, but actually I think it's impossible to make a choice between so many great songs.

Good luck on yout Internet Sites.

Major is doing New York City midtown on July 16. Anyone for afternoon drinks??

"Daddy don't live in that New York City no more, (piano), no mo-o-ore, no no no no no no."

Man, I've been playing the hell out of Citizen 3. The transition from Katy to Scam blows my fucking mind. I wish Donald would do an album of piano ala the end of Throw Back the Little Ones. No Wendel. Just Donald.

RUBYBABY; decent satir. Your not ready for Weird Ol Yank yet, maybe someday. I have some questions for you Ruby, if you don´t bother to answer I guess you don´t have any answers.

What is the "Dirty Work" here? And who are those "we" you guys always come running with every time you suspect I´ve imposted somebody? Do you have some meeting elsewhere that I don´t know about?

And what was that crap that you got so upset and insulted of when I wrote about my priests moisty body? OK, I have learned now that a woman have a moisty body when she is horny and wet, but that was my priest, ok? And how could you, a cristian woman, say to me that you always should be honest with me? And then, instead of speaking to me, you send your husband to "stand up for you". RubyBaby, there was a time I thought we were friends, but now I am hurt and disappointed. Say hallo to YGK when you TAWK to him next time, you cristian woman.

Paul Cummings, Edd, Bob, YGK, Kinky, stay out of this discussion, thanks.

I've been "rediscovering" Citizen 3, too... and Nightfly: won't you pour me a Cuban breeze, Gretchen?

Damn I miss the tours! I am perhaps out of the loop, any news on the "new" album they announced during summer tour '96?

Anybody hear of Jamiriquai? Some serious groovy funk. Hey, does anyone out there suspect that Pretzel Logic harkens to the mysteries of Holy Grail complex? If not, what?

Huang: it must be sung every day of the hearings, a sort of anthem to the losers (zombies)...

ruby @the dirty laundromat Thu Jul 10 16:42:37 PDT 1997

OK, clas: All kidding aside, I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings and that you're disappointed. I really am.

I think I should clear up a couple of things. Firstly, I did not "send" my husband to stick up for me. He saw the post in question that you made so long ago, and thought the same thing I did. Then he perceived that something was bothering me (which was true) and asked me if it was something he did. So I told him that something I saw on the net got me a little upset. It didn't take him long to figure things out and he got angry at you. You know the rest. To tell you the truth, I didn't even see it coming. I was going to e-mail you about it, but you beat me to it. You accused me of setting you up just so I could get a thrill from seeing y'all fight over me. I will tell you that I consider it very sick and it has NEVER entered my heart or mind to do such a thing. And then you said never call or write to you again. So I have not.

And then you called me when I wasn't home, but my husband was. I understand you two had quite a conversation. (I think you were both hammered.)

And please stop flaunting my Christianity, since I don't. It's an awesome gift that I did not earn. And it causes me to be extememly tolerant, btw.

(you got a touch of) Tuesday Weld; Jamiriquai? Yes I´ve heard them, very good, an English group, I read that they are big in USA now. Cool group.

Classhole: What does PROCLAIMETH mean? Yes, I like Song For America too. But I like Lives In The Balance better, the best is Running On Empty, reminds me of this GBook. And I think both Walter and Jackson are great singers, different voices, as it should be. If you listen to Walters singing in headphones you will hear that his voice is strangely panorated (spell?), there´s no "body" in his voice. Anyway kid, thanks for supporting me on Jackson. Nice of you.

Oleander: where ARE you, back on the old plantation?

ZEKE: Have you heard about a studio in Bogalusa, Studio In The Country? I don´t know if it is still there. Kansas and Le Roux used to record their crap there, and S. Wonder recorded his "flower"-record there. I visited that studio once, a nice guy, Bill Evans showed us around. He was an engineer and a producer there. Do you know anything about it?

I was about to say "sorry I haven't posted lately..." when I suddenly discovered, HEY! I HAVE been posting lately. Bully for me, I guess it's time to cut down on the Jack again. Anyways.... if anyone in t 14 Western United states wants to hear a little "live" Rockola, tune into KFI-AM 640 Friday the 11th (today that is) at around 6:30PST. You should hear us playing the Wedding March (R&R style o'course). Could be intersting...then again.....

But not nearly as interesting as the call I got THURSDAY night from a guy claiming to be David Palmers son. After a polite but twisted discussion in which he mantra-matically kept insisting that his Dad had written (no typo, I said WRITTEN) 2 songs on the Can't Buy A Thrill Album, he announced his intention of showing up with Dad at Sundays Steely Damned (THE) performance. Soooo if you're in the neighborhood and wanna stop buy and check it out yourself We'll be at The Catamaran Resort Hotel in Pacific Beach from 9pm-1:30am this Sun., July 13.

OK, Dirty Work is a Given. We don't do Brooklyn. But, if Palmer does show... Question: For those of you who have seen the Midnite Special (I think) footage, do I ask him to sing Do It Again or not???

Walter Becker is WRONG.

Accordions are damn cool!! Just back from my first Gorge show since last years Steely Dan show. It was a double bill of sorts. Well, Los Lobos opened for Dave Matthews. Double bill from my perspective. Anyway, Los Lobos utilizes the accordion, quite effectively I might add, AND they are so f*ing cool it hurts.

So I say again -- Walter Becker is WRONG!

Dave was great. I know there area few of you out there that don't like the band, and that's fine, however I must suggest to those of you on the fence you MUST see them live. You will not regret it.

Thanks babs for the info, the only tribute that plays around here (Connecticut) on occaison is "Black Friday," I don't know if anyone's heard them, or of any others in the Hartford area, but I have always had mixed feelings about cover bands ... and the Dan is the wrong band to mess with.Unless of course, Patrick Stewart was singing lead!

You have to repeat that question a couple of times here. But I can spare you that; nobody knows a shit about a new album, not even the Big Guys I think.

DrMu can'tbuyaccord? Mon Jul 14 09:39:00 PDT 1997

Hey St. Al: What a night! With that lineup, I'd say that Dave Matthews et al. might be considered the clean-up . The Wolf survives!!. In a better world, Los Lobos would be the "Dead" of the '90s, with the exception that they still sound great sober (with reference to above post)! A tasty gumbo of rock, Mexican folk, blues, and a dash of zydo! I've been listening quite a bit lately to another release which very effectively combines a number of musical influences including rock, classical, New Zealand folk, and English folk: Crowded House's final studio release: Together Alone. Their first 3 release found their way into my CD change numerous times to listen to Neil Finn's super-lyrical melodies and dreamy, surreal prose. It was my loss to not having picked up their farewell album earlier. While IMHO the 1st three release are outstanding, I'd agree with a previous poster who championed this album. I may be high, but I'd rate this one on the Rubber Soul level. Oleander, you'd love this one. The point I'm finally getting to is the exquisite use of the accordion on "Walking on the Spot." It's a creamy accent on a beautiful song.

Babs - thanks for rubbing it in - first, for getting a chance to be at the Hollywood Bowl is enviable enough - To get to a SD concert is plain and simple, mental cruelty.

Zeke - If they put on "Pearl of the Quarter" while waiting for your gumbo to arrive on your place mat, it probably would have finished you off. Describe the place you were in, in more detail - Could be the opening scene to an Ellen Barkin movie.

Zeke spike@eatel.net Tue Jul 15 08:57:29 PDT 1997

Razor Boy: You got it.

The joint is called Port of Call right off of Esplande. The surrounding houses are old New Orleans style, 2 story, awesome balconies, huge front porches, with large columns out front, sourrounded by moss filled oak trees. Some of the most fascinating architecture you'll ever see. Always lit up at night. As you walk up there's usually a musician playing around the corner, sax or acoustic guitar, jazz or blues. You can smell the great food from here. To the south is THE QUARTER. The front doors are french style, always open. Walking up the steps to enter, the bar is to your right. You can hardly see your hand in front of your face, the lighting is old hurricane lanterns. The walls are knotted pine, the ceiling has braided rope hanging from one end to the other. These huge bamboo post separate the bar area from the tables. The drinks are killer, excellent brews, hurricanes, some drinks only available here. The food is awesome. The music is chosen for you, Jazz, Blues, and plenty of Steely Dan.

For more details I guess you'll have to stop in and check it out.

How's that. Later, Zeke.

Try the East Village too, like Avenue A between Houston and 10th - lots of dudes and dudettes in various clubs and restaurants, a few galleries.

Joe Murtha JGMurtha@aol.com Tue Jul 15 14:21:23 PDT 1997

Hot off the summer reading list...

According to the Dan bio, "Fagen wrote an extensive Senior Class Project on the novels of Herman Hesse, including Siddhartha, Narziss und Goldmund and Peter Camenzind."

Having just recently re-read Siddhartha, I couldn't help but notice a few choice Dan related items of interest. Besides the obvious Eastern/Buddhism theme of the book - appealling to Fagen's well established fixation with all things Asian - there are these Dan relevant allusions...

1. "Govinda, said Siddhartha to his friend, come with me to the Banyan Tree. We will practice meditation."

2. "Kamala, the well-known courtesan, she owned a house in town."

3. "Why did Gotama once sit down beneath the Bo Tree in his greatest hour when he recieved enlightenment?"

This last quote begs the obvious answer... For an illuminating blowing session with Baxter "the Skunk" and Dias "the Bebopper" of course.

Anyhow... All in all, a good albeit quick (152 pages) Dan related summer read IMHO.

Joe

PS. Another Dan related tome for your consideration: Pynchon's new one "Mason and Dixon".

Q FLAROOM Tue Jul 15 18:36:20 PDT 1997

While I have no "agenda" and will acknowledge prior social and otherwise faux pas' in the past, I must say that due to time constraints, having moved largely to observer status of SD net activity- and fully recognizing that I have relegated myself to the recommended St. Al "ignore the post and they will go away" status- I must say that the Digest is currently more "relevant" than the Guestbook(no real fault of Mr. Al's(not an appeasement). The discourse(sp?) on the Digest is simply more sober, poignant, relevant and less ego driven. Any comparison or "war" as pursued in the past is irrelevant and simply a function of the horseshit that prevails on The Guestbook(again to no fault of Mr. Al)- so anyway if you are a DAN fan I stongly suggest you make sure you tap into both wellsprings of DAN banter. IMHO- PS Kinky I just scored another ASSETATE from the UK only one of 2 or 3 existing copies- of Western World-someday you should explore the definition of an acetate more closely- essentialy the closest thing us mere mortals can get to the original master tape, and limited to only a few copies EVER produced- but yes I am jealous of some of your scores- lets simply all remember that-it's the "ARTWORK" that counts-period. Key words upstairs being "BOTH wellsprings of Dan banter". It's like the strings in Through with Buzz, or the synths in Fez, one needs the other to work.

Catch you next time, July 31 around the village.

I have a question and a comment.

Question:

How many quad albums did Steely Dan release. Did ALL of them have alternate mixes of some of the songs or was it only CBAT?

Comment:

Has anyone else noticed that the Steely Dan(or related) albums not represented on AIA (Pretzel, Katy, The Nightfly) were the only ones represented on the Live at the Beacon CD?

Conincidence? Hmmm...

Q: I agree in your observations on the current discourse quality on this Guestbook versus that on the Digest. St. Al decided to let Clas run amuck, and look what happened. This place is contaminated. I guess that's what happens when you don't have standards. I don't think Hoops would ever post any of Clas's crap in the Digest. I wonder why St Al doesn't put this place out of its misery? Probably hoping for some free CDs or concert tickets when/if the new Dan project ever is released.

Miles' Blue Note Years is washing the lab. This stuff never ceases to amaze, I'm definitely still at the beginning of the learning curve here. The ironic thought that permeated was that *Both* Dan and Wynton Marsalis, "hanging" in effigy at steelydan.com, owe many of their muscial ideas to this wellspring: the man, the music.

Jazz drummer Billy Drummond's latest, "Dubai", has a version of Pat Metheny's "The Bat" featuring Dan alumnus Chris Potter on Sax.

From the liner notes:

"Potter's feature is Pat Metheny's "The Bat" and Billy wanted to record it because he believes it is one of the prettiest songs he's ever heard. 'It has an interesting harmonic progression which lends itself to this instrumentation. Chris Potter really interpreted the melody beautifully.'"

DrMu whenhesMiles Fri Jul 18 07:55:34 PDT 1997

Ruby: any Miles from the late 40's and early 50's will knock you socks off; have yet to €complete* this collection myself.

Jon: Love the "Birth of Cool," but often find myself listening to the early 50's stuff with young Coltrane. Lots of interesting play on musical themes here. Later experimentation in the led to the creation of "free jazz"...but with Miles the improvisations always made sense here and never drifted into "random notes." One theme could beget a number of others with each one getting an interesting twist or two. I hear lots of phrases during this period which have been borrowed by later artists, including Dan. For example the muscial phrase that goes with the lyrics "turn that jungle music down, just until we're out of town" on Babylon Sisters can be heard note for note at the end of Miles' solo on "My Funny Valentine." Birth of Cool indeed.

I saw Ricki Lee Jones play here in Toronto about a month ago and it was OK. She was a bit arrogant. She did about an hour and then left the stage. You never know what is going on behind the scenes. She just basically plugged her new album.

I've asked the same question to Pete Fogel a number of times and his e-mail must be broken because he NEVER answers. I'll post it here, just to be helpful.

The question is:

What movie, put out in the last two years, available as a commercial release, features a Thank-You to Donald Fagen in its credits?

He still hasn't answered. I asked him this question at least 4 months ago. His e-mail must be down or something. Or maybe he doesn't know the answer to the question. Does this mean I've stumped the Fogel? Just wondering.

Yer Pal,

Shindig.

JoeGM: I, too, was intrigued by your post concerning SteelyDan's connection to Hermann Hesse literature. Having never read a single word by H.H. (except unknowingly in Dan lyrics), this is new to me. I wonder if there is anything from Steppenwolf in SD material. (I looked up Hesse in the encyclopedia. Did he look a lot like Henry Fonda, or what?)

Zeke: I have a favorite mw post, too. It was about him (mw) going up some dark, winding stairs leading to MajorDude's office. But when he got there, the window was open and some golf clubs were missing, and the Major could not be found...

There's certainly some SD in Steppenwolf. John Kay (lead vox) recorded "Giles Of The River" on his "My Sportin' Life" album...

Well!! I go to northern Michigan for a couple weeks--and return to find I didn't miss much...EXCEPT:

CONGRATULATIONS BOB T on the arrival of the squonklet! I didn't know you were in the family way! I like Naima (the blissful Coltrane tune) but far be it from me to suggest anything--took us three weeks to name our first one. Hope you have many wonderful uninterrupted adoring hours with your little girl here at the beginning.

Clas--I'm touched. You missed me.

Doc Mu--Thanx for the tip. I'll check it out.

YGK--loved your tale of the goddaughter's groove. I LOVE Latin music, and I'll keep my ojos peeled for DLG. These days I'm listening to a lot of Fania All-Stars, Celia Cruz (la reina of Latin soul), Ruben Blades, and a nice Putumayo compilation called "Latino Latino."

St. Al--illegitimi non carborundum. As I said, I agree re the DMB. Glad you saw them. Los Lobos played here several years back, and they COOKED. My dancin' shoes got plumb wore through. However, don't you think the most influential and prolific practitioner of the accordion in rock today is Weird Al?

Zeke--my mouth is watering. May I come take a stroll with you one of these steamy evenings, darlin'? It's not that far from Carolina.

Joe--cool Hesse thoughts. I've got about 100 pages to go in "Mason & Dixon"--jeez, Pynchon is a wild & funny guy--needs an editor, but it's worth it to stumble across the gem passages. Have you read him?

Getting too long, but gotta share some northern Dan moments:

1. "Deacon Blues" over Key lime pie at a restaurant with old friends....

2. Read about an 18th century French painter, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, and saw a repro of his painting (it's in the Met) "Lot and His Daughters." (OK, an indirect one; you have to be me or Roy to smile at this one)...

3. This from the Louisville Courier-Journal (6/28/97) review of Orquestra Was' "Forever's a Long, Long Time:" "Other artists might pull disparate influences together for an album, blend them and make their own sounds, but Was adds the influences straight from the source, straight to the mix. He seems to hear a sound from a particular player and simply recruits that musician. We've heard Steely Dan do this--think 'Aja'--but Was seems more obsessed with vibe and groove, while the Dan was out to show how high pop music could be elevated by excellent performances and arrangements." Comments?...

4. Doing the dishes to "Katy Lied" on the portable CD phones.

One last thing--I swear!--Ruby--thought about you as I listened for alliteration. My faves: "We'll wear the weary hours down"--sneaky "w" in "hours;" and "Green earrings/I remember/The rings of rare design...." Now on to assonance.

GRK; Is that a poem or what? "All for something LACEY"? What do you mean with that? You must remember that you are talking to a swede.

ZEKE; take good care of my woman (Ruby/Ole) down there? Don´t stroll Bourbon at nights!

RUBY; hi. I´m in a coma here in Borensberg. It´s sunny and hot, I should be painting (pictures, Lena does the real painting you know) or something, but you know, I´m so lazy. And still tired, I was on a 2-day dog-class, very intensive, last week. Wrestling dogs is NOT my bag. Pompe is heavier than I am. And I had to bite his ear! So, I do everything to be the leader of the pack.

Take care.

Oleander: regarding that Don Was vs. the Dan comment, all I have to say is, think back to some of the stuff we heard about Kamakiriad, with DF shaving nanoseconds off a drum beat to fit the groove, and it seems hard to imagine that Was could be more obsessed with the groove than that.

Nice one. I do believe that my daughter weighed the same. She was born 4 months ago now. She is called Chloe and she was bang on time to the due day. My father said that she shows great timing; a musical career ahead per chance???

Any way well done again! Name wise, what about Wendel (kinda boyish mind you!)

All you other guys, I have just returned from a trip to the Hague. Spent most of hit drunk, much to my wife's disaproval, BUT I did see the 'Legends' supergroup. Marcus Miller basic assembled Mr Gadd, Mr Sanbourn, Mr Clapton and Mr Sample to cool about. Highlight of the entire North Sea Jazz event!!!

I hope that you are jealous. I am not actually a Clapton fan, but given the company he was in, he shone. I also have some highlights on video. Cool

Roy--Welcome back! (Also to Lester & other long-goners) I think I'd rather make like Jimmy Hoffa under Tiger Stadium (think they'll find him when they tear it down?) than be doing what you are. I gotta hand it to you--the things one will do for one's kids.

"Mason & Dixon" STI (Steely tie-in)--the novel is an imagining of the adventures of the aforenamed astronomer and surveyor, not just in the carving of the eponymous Line but around the world. They put in some time on St. Helena (find it in your atlas--not at all where I thought it was), where Napoleon was exiled--cf. numerous Steely refs to that "little man." But the main tie-in is that here are two men, very different, thrown together by circumstance (synchronicity), each a virtuoso in his own way, who lived through exciting and tragic times and maintained a fond and fruitful, if sometimes bickering and irritable, long-term relationship. Sound familiar? This is limned particularly sweetly in the final chapters.

Shindig--dammit, quit being so smug and tell us. St. Al-of-the-Book--this gang-green is killin' me.

Geo--I think WebTV is a pretext for those infomercials Becker was threatening.

With no SD tour this year, I've had to expand my concert attendance. I'm going to go see Sheryl Crow next week indoors in a small concert hall. She plays in almost the same venues as SD did last year, except shee hit Saskatoon, Winnepeg, and Vermont. The only reason I mention her here is that she promently mentions The Two in the Na-Na song from her first album. With the usual obscure refrences to the origin of the bands name. My triva question for today: Does anybody else know of other bands lyrics that mention Steely Dan by name?

TSFK: I have been avoiding all human contact because my life is crumbling around me. Thanks for noticing, though.

This is an "essay" I posted on an AOL site awhile back. Some of you may have already seen this...scroll if needed.

Royal Scam/Aja comparison

If I had to describe what each album is about with one word, I would choose:

The Royal Scam = Escape

Aja = Homecoming

I think that each of the Steely Dan albums have a theme running through them. Aja seems to be a response to The Royal Scam, musically and lyrically.

The Royal Scam's music is high-octane, quick, angry, powerful, schizophrenic and fast-moving. The drums are heavy and loud. The guitars are fast and nasty. Donald's voice is wild and scary. The music fits the lyrical content well. Scam's lyrics seem to be about being on the run, hiding, criminal activity, sexual adventures and escaping from soceity.

Kid Charlemagne=A famous California acid dealer on the run from law.

"Clean this mess up or else we'll all end up in jail. Those test tubes and the scale, just get it all out of here. Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car. I think the people down the hall know who you are. Careful what you carry, 'cause the man is wise; you are still an outlaw in their eyes."

Caves Of Altamira=A kid hiding from the problems of soceity.

"...I spent my days alone. The busy world was not for me, so I went and found my own/..../I'd hide inside a hall of rock and sand."

Don't Take Me Alive=A criminal involved in a barricaded stand-off with authorities.

"Got a case of dynamite, I could hold out here all night. Yes, I crossed my old man back in Oregon, don't take me alive."

Sign In Stranger=A planet(Mizar 5) populated by criminals (without law enforcement).

"They don't even have policeman one. Doesn't matter where you've been or what you've done./.../Do you have a dark spot on your past? Leave it to my man he'll fix it fast./.../He will make your mug shots disappear."

The Fez=A guy claiming to never have sex again without a condom. "No, I'm never gonna do IT without the fez on."

Green Earrings=A jewel thief who steals from young ladies.

"Cold, daring, no flies on me. Sorry Angel, I must take what I see. Green Earrings, I remember, the rings of rare design. I remember the look in your eyes, (but) I don't mind."

Haitian Divorce=An American couple(Babs and Clean Willy) gets a quickie divorce in Haiti("No tears and no hearts breakin', no remorse"). While there, the wife has an affair("She get it on tonight") with a strange Haitian man and she becomes pregnant with his child. Babs and Clean Willy return to the U.S. and get back together again("Tearful reunion in the U.S.A."). When the child is born everyone realizes it can't be his (Clean Willy's) kid("Some babies grow in a peculiar way. It changed. It grew and everybody knew...semi-mojo, who's this kinky so and so."). Clean Willy(the new father) decides to divorce Babs, for good this time("Papa go, 'Oh, oh,... no hesitation.../.../This is your Haitian divorce.").

Everything You Did=A guy comes home to find his woman in bed with another guy. He gets turned on by this and he insists that she tell him all the graphic details of the sexual encounter and do the same things with him.

"Where did the bastard run? Is he still around? Now you gotta tell me everything you did baby./.../Traces are everywhere in our happy home. Now you better tell me everything you did baby./.../You(r) gonna show me later/.../I know your filthy mind. Now you're gonna DO me everything you did baby.".

The Royal Scam=A group of poor Puerto Ricans immigrated to New York("They wandered in from the city of St. John without a dime."). The economy was very depressed, no one wanted to help them and they had to live in slums("They are hounded down to the bottom of a bad town amid the ruins"). When they wrote home to Puerto Rico, they didn't want everyone to think that things had gone badly for them, so they told everyone that life was perfect in New York, easy money, etc.("Now the tale is told by the old man back home as he reads the letter...how they are paid in gold just to babble in the back room all night and waste the time."). When the people in Puerto Rico heard this they decided to move to New York too("And they wandered in from the city of St. John without a dime."). In each of the songs on RS someone is trying to escape or avoid something(relationship{HD}, fatherhood and STD's{Fez}, economic depression {RS}).

The Royal Scam--- 1976.

Aja---1977.

One year later everything has changed. Musically, Aja is sweeter than RS. The songs are slower and softer. Donald's voice is more melodic, less strained. The drums are more laid back. The guitars are looser and smoother.

Aja's lyrics seem to reflect someone who has found peace and no longer wants to be on the run. Home, sanctuary and familiar, loving relationships appear to be the main topics.

Black Cow = A guy decides to break up with his promiscuous girlfriend. The exact opposite of Everything You Did.

"Like a gangster on the run, you will stagger HOMEWARD to your precious one. I'm the one./.../I can't cry anymore while you run around. Break away, just when it seems so clear that its over now, drink your big black cow and get out of here."

This is important, because already the first song on the album shows a rejection of the major theme on The Royal Scam(running around). Lyrically they have "broken away".

Aja = Aja is most likely a young lady that gives solace and comfort to a weary gentleman. "I run to you."

Deacon Blues = More lyrics on the homecoming theme.

"It seems like only yesterday, I gazed through the glass at ramblers, wild gamblers THAT'S ALL IN THE PAST./.../A world of my own. I'll make it my HOME, sweet HOME. "

Peg = A joyful ditty to a photogenic girlfriend. " It will come back to you./.../ I know I'll love you better."

Home At Last = Still more lyrics on the homecoming theme.

"The danger on the rocks is surely PAST./.../Could it be that I have found my HOME at last."

I Got The News = A very erotic song. It gives the details of a steamy sexual encounter.

"I may never walk again/.../Love rampaging/.../I would still be proud to know you."

Josie = A HOMECOMING party for the most popular girl in the neighborhood.

"We're gonna break out the hats and hooters when Josie comes home./.../Lay down the law and break it when Josie COMES HOME."

The Royal Scam is a celebration of life on the road. Thieves, drug dealers and cheaters are on the run.

Aja is a homecoming. It is a look back on the dangerous past with the comfort of an old lover.

Wonderful lyrics by Becker/Fagen

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts about these albums or my interpretations of their themes.

Thanks for reading this far,

m.e.

Thanks for all the love & great name suggestions. It looks as though we're going with Celia Marie, although Clas had us batting Amelia around for a while. (Mr.C also suggested Mary. Coincidence??) Unfortunately, Bodacious Cowgirl's suggestion of Katherine Roulade Tedde came in just under the wire. ZEKE: Third World Man was originally chucked from the Aja sessions, but resurfaced for Gaucho when that albums original title track song "The Second Arrangement" bit the dust due to human error.

Moray Eel - Congratulations! Yours was the first enjoyable/interesting post I've read on this guestbook in two years! I agree with your analyses, and I've always thought that the Royal Scam was more heavily influenced by Walter than any of the other albums. I'd like to hear your thoughts on Countdown, Pretzel Logic, and Katy Lied...all completely different, yet released only one year apart.

Here's hoping that the forthcoming album captures the energy and cynicism of the others.

Phew - Just got back to the Great White North after 8 days at North Hampton Beach, N.H. All the way down, and back, with all those classic hit stations, pseudo jazz stations, and all, hear one SD tune in the whole length of time away - every station's token standard, "Do It Again." The saving grace was picking up the"Pretzel Logic," cassette, with a different track list than vinyl I have at home - the tape has "Monkey In Your Soul," "Charley Freak," "Barrytown," and "Charlie Parker's Band." Thank someone that I had the tape for the trip home - the kids had their own stuff on their walkman's, so it was a little more tolerable. Great to be able to read the guest book again.

Happy Birthday Wayne Krantz!

A good Dan moment tonight while walking past "Bar & Books" -- a posh summer-smoker-underground kind of place on Lexington Ave; my sharp-eared companion stopped me a few steps past the establishment's open windows and said: "hear that?". It was the belovedly rude opening riff of DTMA. A very strange playlist pick for a place like that -- but maybe they were commemorating its live debut at Hartford, one year ago tomorrow night...?

Beautiful Survivor - You may loose that acronym for opening up wounds that had a chance to heal and slip into some dark recess, If SD tours in 1998, there is the remote chance we'll get the dates and locations for us folks north of the 49th parallel. But please, tell me, could you give us the set list, from start to finish, from that memorable evening? Between smug looks of reflection and sips of Napoleon Brandy.

It would have been even better hearing the guys in that "Pearl of the Quarter" nigh spot that Zeke described while in a euphoric haze in New Orleans. Kind of like the Stones in the El Mocambo in Toronto back in 1977. (As if I were there!).
