According to a sleight note from mr Blaise,
(you know Blaise, he's a gringo, who thinks Sweden only exists of blond Aryan types. If I had time I should tell him that Sweden is an area with a large number of immigrants, first, second, third and etc etc generations. From USA - Somalia - Ethiopia - Kosovo - Joguslavia - Italy (this is a land of pizzerias) - Thailand - Easteuropeans, yes, even Canada and others)
and he told me that I should give you:

CaraMia - VERY funny email, no driving on Sunset there, no.
dr Mu - thanx man. No, there were a lot of takes. Specially the saxes and the guitar solo in the middle. From the beginning we decided to NOT use any tracks from the sequencer, we wanted all live, even the shaker. The drummer is a perfect sessiondrummer, you don't have to sit being nervous if he will remember the bridge, you know... it's a joy working with him.
I am waiting for my CD, it will be fun listening to it.

Pete, really cool photos, man.
I'm amazed though at looking at
Michael Jackson. My dad's
a big Jackson fan. I'm planning to watch the VH1 special
with him tonight when he comes over to my crib.
Maybe he'll finally worry. Michael
just doesn't look like Michael. More gaunt, more whiter than Jesse Helms, less
blacker than me. If you want an example of why plastic surgery
is unnecessary, this is it.
As for Keith Richards, well, look
on the bright side, at least he
looks tanned up. :)
Excellent Job Pete and you too Aus.

Aus - Great reports. Listen, I can understand befuddled thought processes when you run into someone like that. At the Va. Beach show last summer I had just come from the t-shirt stand and look up to see Ted Baker walking by. I go "Ted... Ted Baker?" He smiles and says hello. I walk over and shake hands and the best I could come up with was "I've really enjoyed your work". And "Have you been enjoying the tour?" Oh well.

On the March 26th issue of Time magazine out now, a reader from Lima, Ohio named Michael Frueh wrote a letter in the Letters section. Here's what he wrote:
LAY OFF THE OLD FOLKS
In your coverage of the recording industry's Grammy Awards, you noted there were no formal protests against Steely Dan's winning album of the year, "unless you consider a nation of people asking, 'Are they still alive?' a form of protest," I know of no one who does not have a Dan album. On top of that, Steely Dan's songs are still getting major airplay 30 years after the band began recording. So what if they are skeevy older guys? I'm one myself, and I'm delighted they finally received the public acclaim they deserve.
MICHAEL FRUEH
Lima, Ohio
There's another letter from a
different reader blasting the magazine for criticizing Madonna's performance and
focusing on her being 42 and a mother of two. But the letter from Mr. Frueh says
it all: The music industry may still be segregated but
age, wisdom and talent still win out.
"I'm unhappy in the music
business. I like the music. Love and live it in fact. But for me, the business
part plain stinks."

Well. Here I am, back again after my hiatus of about a week to do some serious thinking about being an adult, and other things not terribly interesting, and certainly not Dan related.
First, Aussie, you are a **god**. Air kisses. Fabulous recap; I almost felt like I was there. Actually, if I had been there, I would have remembered the suite number, or dragged Walter back for a bit of champagne.
Second: I should have been reading this am, and I would have had a shot at one of the programs. Phooey.
And I don't feel like numbering the rest of my comments, but...
Jimbo: I am back, and did see your flattering comment about me inducting the boys. Is that a euphemism? *grin*
NMN: London is not a *day* trip, although I admire your fortitude. I'm guessing the Mrs. won't be jetting in with you Thursday?
I am **so** excited for Thursday night...looking forward to meeting those of you coming in for the festivities. I will be around Thursday and Friday for fun, frolicing and general mayhem. Don't worry, I'll find you....
I'm iffy on the name tags, though. Can I write Lady Bayside on mine, or do I have to go with my everyday name
So, I'll see many of you for not-so-virtual cocktails on Thursday. If anyone is in NYC and wants to have lunch Thursday day, I'm all for it.

3. Biscuit Glace
4. Opera box seats
Other quick notes: Marc Anthony and Ricky Martin were great.
Paul Simon's Graceland was extremely well done. What's with the red baseball cap though?
Ritchie Valens brother did killer harmonica solo at end of all-satr solo jam..on his knees and panting.
Solomon Burke and Kid Rock tandem kicked ass.
The programme has full colour four page layout of the boys. Haven't read the article yet but pictures are swanky. Towards the back of the programme all inductees are honoured in full page ads by their respective record lable/management companies. Steely Dan's page reads: "Their music has defied all categories but one: REMARKABLE. Giant Records honours Donald Fagen and Walter Becker for their creation of an extraordinary musical legacy." Pictured in the ad are D&W seated on Gold and Blue metallic coloured chairs in suits. Very nice.

Wow! What an update on all the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame pagentry.
First of all, thanks to Big Fan for the New York Times URL--great story...do you work at the New York Times or some paper, Big Fan? I don't know how you get around to all these sites. Thanks for your dedicated work and efforts in this matter.
Then thanks to all who contributed links and around-the-world reports that were so up to the minute.
Aussie--INCREDIBLE STORY! You should have asked Walter, "Where did you get those shoes!?" Had you given him your room number, I know he would come up for champagne with you--better luck next time. I'm glad that other Dan fans were there...did you hook up with Fogel and his pals?
Every detail was so descriptive...I felt like I could even see Donny and Wally's nose hairs the way you described it--what a vivid picture. Out of curiosity, what is your tux like? I picture yours being white, but then again, if you wear that white tuxedo, how you gonna beat the heat?
I would auction those programmes on eBay if I were you. I'm sure Q will give you $$$$ for them.
Do you think SD was mad about being part of the All Star jam? I'm surprised that they didn't participate. I'm sure the performance with the Paul Shaffer band will go down as one of the most memorable of all time.
Thanks to Fogel and Hoops (I-L-L / I-N-I!!!!!!!!!!) for the first report of the evening. Pete seems so dedicated. I really got a laff out of the bit about the van, the cookies, and Michael Jackson! Was that made up or was that for real, at least that there was a van out front? But even more so, I loved Donald's comment about Gore winning but not being Prez. Classic quip-pretty clear what they think about the election.
Finally, thanks to St Al for all his work here. I don't know how he finds the time and energy.

Wow. What an evening. I was three quarters of the way finished and I was pinged out of my internet explorer losing my original post. It was long. I will try again.
Last night, The sixteenth Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel 301 Park Avenue, New York City. Get to the hotel circa 4:45 pm and get two keys for sutie number 30M2 in the North Tower. While patiently waiting for the elevator I admire the rich detail of the pewter coloured steel doors and their elaborate Atlasian design. Doors open. I see an elevator operator and three other gentlemen. Now, I really don't know if this was kismet or what but I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that one of the gentlemen was Mr. Walter Becker.
Cool as a cucumber I look him directly in the eyes and say to him: "Mr. Becker" He smiles a warm smile and says hello. "Congratulations" I say back to him. He replies thank you. The operator speeds past my floor and we remain silent until he stops at Walter's floor (35). As he exits I invite Mr. Becker for champagne in our suite on the 30th floor but stupidly omit my name and our suite number. He politely thanks me saying "sure!" and walks out. wearing dark denim and really ratty looking sneakers (bad sneakers?) My one chance blown. That was, nevertheless, your faithful narrators highlight of the entire evening.
Babes gets to the hotel after having her hair and makeup done bringing champagne and other goodies. She can hardly believe my brush with Mr. Becker and says that this must be a sign of better things to come....she was dead on.
Shower up, consume a bottle of Veuve Clquot and get into tux. Babes is stunning in metallic grey body hugging dress...both dressed to kill and polish off a few Cape Codders just to get into the spirit of the buzz that has compleatly enveloped the splendid facility called the Waldorf Astoria. Paparazzi everywhere. Fans, hangers-ons, freaks carrying guitars and drum skins (presumably for autographs), a bevy of very well dressed young ladies stalking about the lobby....the buzz was palpable. TV crews jam the sidewalks on Park Avenue just outside the Hotel...security extremely tight. Big night yes.
The grand Ballroom is on the third floor. The room is awesome. It has three levels, the main floor where the stage was, a mezzanine balcony with opera like boxes affording perhaps the best views of the entire scene and a third balcony where the bulk of the audio-visual teams where. Our seats were in the mezzanine balcony to the right of the stage...killer seats. We could see where D&W were seated. They had ten people in their table..Libby Titus, and what looked like D&W's parents plus a smoking hot blonde babe. Their table was five from the stage looking to the left of the stage.
We could see plain as day: Steve Tyler of Aerosmith sitting with his lovely daughter Liv Tyler and her fiancee (who sported a sickly looking hot pink jacket), Keith Richards who was wasted, Steve Case (CEO of AOL Time Warner), Paul Shaeffer, Kid Rock (who I partied with a bit before he took the stage), Paul Simon, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, and literally hundreds of other industry hot shots and hollywood types. We sat next to Ritchie Valens family in the opear box seats. Very very nice people.
The dinner was as following:
1. Bibb, Endive and Radicchio Salad with goat cheese, walnuts and focaccia Crisp
Garnish. Raspberry Vinaigrette.
2. Grilled veal chop, Horseradish whipped potatoes, swiis chard, natural jus.
3. Bicuti glace, chocolate and coffee, Ice cream sandwiches, cookies and truffles.
Queen opens with We Will Rock You. Stunning. Performance starts at around 8:30-8:45. Fast forward to Steely Dan....
Very nice words in voice over as great old pictures of the boys light up both gigantic screens that flank either side of the stage. Crowd very appreciative and receive warm applause. Donald jokes about trivia questions and playfully asks the crowd if anyone knows who the drummer for The Mothers of Invention was. Launch into BLACK FRIDAY. Multi piece band with horns...the band from Saturday Night Live and Paul Shaeffer. Sound great. Ballroom is held captive as Walter telegraphs bullets over the crowd's heads defining a super unique groove...his solo is searing and he is TRULY enjoying this. Soaking it up. Donald grooves away on piano and has never sounded better...wearing dark jacket with teal/aqua coloured shirt and dark shades. Walter in pretty much all black and his trademark horn rimmed glasses giving him the look of a bespecatcled hippie turned mathematics professor. Teleprompter towards the back of the main floor could be seen from our seats and we see people reading the lrics and singing along (not many). Great round of applause for the boys.
Many many great acts including Aerosmith which really rocked. It was funny to see Donald's reaction during one of Aerosmith's over-extended guitar jams: Hand on chin looking like he's suffering from terminal ennui. Walter was seemingly more interested in the action sitting fairly erect and showing good posture.
Another notable act was Bono doingBob Marley's Could you be Loved with some awesome sounding black girl...great. The Flamingoes were also spectacular..Michael Jackson looked sickly...he hobbled up on stage and told the crowd he hurt his leg in a bad fall. Someone from the crowd yelled for him to sing and he just half laughed and blew it off. He did not perform. So anti-climactic. A friend of mine from BMG sat with Michal and he reported to me that he had nervous attacks the whole time he was seated with him and could barely speak. Also his skin looked very pasty pale and sickly. Not good.
Fast forward to encores. Steely Dan elects not to partake in allstar jam and instead takes the stage themselves to do: Do it Again. Another stellar performance. Superb.
The programme is very very nice. I have a few extras BTW. There was also a CD given to the all guests. Steely Dan has two tracks: Rikki Don't Lose That Number and Do it Again. I have an extra one of those too.
Anyway...I'm very hung over and I'm sure I left out alot. The performances went wel into the morning and we found ourselves back in our suite at 1:30 am. You will all see the glory tomorrow on VH-1.
Perhaps more colour later.

Aussie

I was thrilled to learn that Donald says they'll be re-doubling their efforts now to counter the kiss off, so now we will only have to wait 10 years for "the next one" to come out instead of 20. By then I will have been a member of AARP and expect a discount...

Hey, Rick Wright's fav SD Lp is Royal Scam! Just like me! Disagree with the need to edit the Wall to one Lp (1.5 maybe, but not one). The young fan angle is really a trip. We are bombarded with requests to play under 21 clubs (95% of our gigs are 21+). The average age at our shows is about 30 -- which is incredble when you consider the number of 45-50 year olds who attend. Floyd really captured the generation X angst before generation X existed. Which is quite ironic (with apologies to Alanis) when you consider that Johnny Rotten was discovered wearing a Pink Floyd concert T-shirt upon which he had added the hand-lettered words "I hate"
For those of you interested, I suggest a "listening party" consisting of Showbiz Kids followed by Not Now John. Also, Peg backed up with Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2, for different reasons. Or Pigs and Haitain Divorce -- the wonders of the vocoder. Oh, and Young Lust with any of the many SD sexual deviant cuts. "Will some woman in this desert land, make me feel like a real man?" "Do you feel, like I do? I want to thank [sure that's what he said ;) ] you.

Clas: Even better than last year. You have to be very proud of your son Jonas. Breat guitar licks with more than a pinch of Carlton. Very, very nice sax chart he wrote. Really sounds kicked up and live. Just a few takes with minimum overdubbing? A little extended Omartian solo at the end.

Yes, Blaise, I have now had my 15 minutes of fame--LOL! I felt it important the greater Dandom be represented, and that we get an answer to at least one of the burning questions uppermost in our minds. Or--I wanted to see if the could confirm that they would be available this weekend as suggested by the reporters on the radio yesterday morning. Or--I just wanted to see my name in print.
Aussie--you mean you didn't stay up all night to post the details for us? What--did you have to get up for work in the morning or something? What's more important here? Do we need to go over your sense of priority with you?
Re the Eminem question from the reporter: Methinks that Eminem is getting way too much free publicity at D + W's expense by stupid/inane/uncreative/narrow-minded/out-of-touch/insert-adjective-of-your-choice reporters who are reworking the Grammy surprise either because they think mentioning his name will get them more attention or because they are simply too lazy to do some research and ask some pertinent questions. Are they looking for some controversial quotes from our boys? They probably wouldn't know them if/when they got them. Their subtlety is not noticed by those who do not indulge in it themselves.
Victoria Cave is still missing...

Woah... I'm a little disappointed with the coverage there
but it must have been something to see, I'm sure. At least the final jam...
Our Plain Dealer reporter sounded like he would need night- vision glasses. Kept
writing "it appears that..." and cut and pasted the Rock Hall's
profile pages on inductees. No pictures as promised.
But Robin made it in for posterity:
"10:10 p.m.
Robin asks in an e-mail when the new inductees will be featured physically in the Rock Hall. We don't have the answer to that one, but it will be very soon." Typical non-answer.
So Moby doesn't know Steely Dan? You know what? I would have gotten Aus and Fogel up there. They would know how to do induct in style.
Delusional statement of the day: I know you all don't care but at least Donald reads my posts. I remember joking that he linked his Grammy speeches. Well, last night he did just that:
"Asked afterward for a statement by reporters, Fagen referred to the band's Web site, which says ``Thanks'' to mark the event."
Coincidence? I think not. Until proven otherwise, that is...

w1p, enjoyable debate comrade. mid-period floyd is the cream. meddle, dsm, wywh, animals, musically for me the wall could have been edited to one record. accessiblity generally diminishes with increased complexity, but as a musician i tend to find more tedium in repetitive use of g, c, d, em progressions and drumming behind the beat. pink floyd for me is a conceptual ensemble, as opposed to an amalgamation of kick-ass musicians. as a masterfully written conceptual rock piece, dsm is hard to beat and worthy of it's laurels. floyd also continues to gain younger audience at an amazing rate and that is a feat.
the mamas & the papas are the kind of sound that just define an era. and i'm just a sucker for vocal arrangement anyway and because of that, i own way too many four freshmen records, beach boys studio outtakes, and twentieth century choral pieces. the human voice is just a gas...

From: hoops@dandom.com channeling from

Subject: SPOILEResque:
Psychic Transmission from Hall
of Fame Inductions
After all these years of
rejection, it's like a dream come true!
We're all ecstatic that Steely Dan has finally got their due and
are finally in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Although, I couldn't be there at
the actual Hall of Fame ceremony,
I put on my lucky psychic hat and was able to obtain some
transmissions, albeit perhaps scrambled, from the site of this
Sacramental Occasion.
I drifted around the vicinity of
the Waldorf Astoria (the site of
the inductions) and the vibe of excitement became downright
heady with auras of gold and blue present everywhere.
Within 100 feet of the entrance, I spotted an unmarked van.
I could sense that it was filled with cases of Walter and Donald's
secret recipe honey mustard as well as the now infamous
Swedish Ginger cookies; clearly the Hall of Fame deal
was about to be consummated. On the other hand,
perhaps the vehicle contained Michael Jackson's monkey,
tanks of pure oxygen and emergency plastic surgery
supplies. We'll never know...but then again, it doesn't matter.
Then I got this transmission from
Pete Fogel who was a
member of the press corp...this is what I was able to
transcribe, assuming all channels were functioning at 1200 gbps.
Steely Dan was third to be
inducted this evening. There
was an approximately 90 second long multimedia presentation
covering the history of Steely Dan in pictures and video.
One highlight was a very rare, crystal clear clip of Donald
and Walter performing "Show Biz Kids" on Midnight Special"
circa 1973. Steely Dan was introduced by Moby.
(Later, in the press room, Moby explained that he was
completely shocked and honored to be chosen to induct Steely Dan.)
Donald and Walter gave a succinct
speech; Walter, with his
usual sense of humor, also attempted to take some questions
from the audience.
Steely Dan's "Moment"
closed with a performance of
"Black Friday" which was backed by Paul Shaffer's house band.
Later in the evening, Donald and
Walter answered questions
for the press. Here is a sample of the exchanges:
Press member to Donald:
"Donald, what do you think of
Eminem's lyrics?"
DF: Cool.
. . . . . . . . . .
WB: "We're a little concerned
that this might be our final
kiss-off! So we're now re-doubling our efforts to further
our careers..."
DF: "Well Al Gore won and look where that got him..."
The evening closed with the
traditional All-star jam
which included "Do It Again," featuring Brian May on the
guitar solo and Jenny Muldaur and (I believe) Amy Helm
providing background vox.
What a NIGHT!

Mod Squad: LOL. Modulation? That's all you hear?
Let's take the end of the song. When Michelle Phillips sings "If there's one thing I want you to do, especially for me" doubled with Denny Doherty she sings flat as she often did. John Phillips used her own weakness to his advantage. He often had her sing a little breathy to smooth out the bumps, and had Mama Cass sing over the top although she was a natural lead. It worked. Thus the next passage "and it's something that everybody needs" with Mama belting it sounds half-a-key higher and faster. But that's not what I was talking about. Although notice how it works in a song with the player piano sound which tends to speed up and slow down - sneaky, eh? On the next line "Each night before you go to bed my baby" Phillips creates this incredible wall of harmonic sound. Doherty, Mama, and Michelle play leapfrog as one takes the top note, then the next, with each note (up through the word 'go') in succession as they climb the ladder. Now *that's* fuckin' genius!

t: There were some other "harmony vocal bands" like The Association, but nothing since has matched the sheer virtuosity of the vocal charts of John Philips or Brian Wilson. Extraordinary and creative. My personal favorite of the Mamas and Papas' is the cover of "Dedicated to the One I Love." the rising "...each night before I go to bed my baby.," is real ear candy...

My Mama's & Papa's moment of
clarity: way back when, in '87, I stayed in to record a broadcast of the
Monterey Pop Festival on it's 20th anniversary. Some of the sets hadn't been
heard in their entirety since the event. I had just enough tape to get those
bands I intended (Janis, the Airplane, Jimi, the Who, the
Dead, some others...). The show was being rebroadcast in the order of
appearance, so the Moms & Dads were last. As I lay on my bed exhausedted
after 7 hours of recording listening to them, I was *blown* by how well they
recreated their psychedelicate harmonies live. I gained huge respect for them
from that experience...

Genesis -- Back in NYC -- I have it on right now. stevie -- no apologies necessary (what else should I be? all apologies?) -- I can't disagree with you comments on the "musicianship" involved in Genesis as compared to Pink Floyd. I do think Floyd has Genesis beat in terms of combining elements of musicianship, acessibility and credible song writing. Before Phil took over, I found a lot of Genesis wonderful but occasionally tedious. After Phil took over I found the "assessible" stuff to be rubbish. Floyd (post Syd) suffered quite a bit from the "tedium" disease until Dark Side which must be included in any debate over the best rock albums of all time. From Dark Side to The Wall, Floyd as an overall package is just superior to Genesis -- post or pre. Say what you want about Floyd, but there is no fluff on any of those records which is more than you can say about post Peter Genesis. On the other hand, the material is much punchier and accessible than what in my opinion is is laborious pre Phil Genesis. When you break it down musician by musician, I think Genesis comes out on top of Floyd(hell, I think Yes comes out on top). But to my way of thinking, putting on a Floyd Lp (from the Big 4, DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and the Wall) is just a more enjoyable experience. Subjectivity, of course, rules the day -- in some ways its like asking who was a better basketball player, Oscar Robertson or Kareem Abdul Jabbar. They're both pretty damn good.

Rock Hall inductions - live
coverage Monday
Re: Listening Party (Admin)
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 20:27:43 GMT
From: Cleveland.com
Log on Monday night for LIVE play by play coverage from local music expert Eric Olsen. Check out photo galleries from the Cleveland simulcast and from the show in New York. Ask Eric your questions about the ceremony and much more. http://www.cleveland.com/music/rockhall/
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Doesn't sound like a simulcast exactly, but probably worth checking out. Sadly,
proximity doesn't equal feasibility; I will not be able to attend the CC version
at the Hall itself. Also, there is a teaser on the Plain Dealer website that
there will be an article about the guys in the Arts & Life section
today--they will hopefully get it on the website before too long.
Judging from the official HOF website, the new exhibits are available starting tonight. Did Donald's piano make it? Any fezzes? A copy of "Naked Lunch"? The studio equipment they previously offered? The sunglasses Donald wore in several pics? Photos of all of the previous members/contributors?
Thanks for the heads-up about the ODP--once again, props to the WebDrone! Coupled with the Grammy thank yous, I'm getting that warm and fuzzy feeling again. Or is that the cat?

stevie - The fact that these respectable folks now claim anonymous postings is proof that I'm NOT every pure anon poster out there and that lifts a lot off my shoulders. Sure, it's comforting to think it's blaise all the time but a little uncertainty never hurt anyone. I still worship Bruford early-Yes work as in The Yes Album for example. Starship Trooper and such. Very inventive. Like a snare lazily dragging its feet through the verses.
Whoever (aa?)- Although the content is offensive and would deserve a Tipper sticker, I'm glad I caught that one if only for the form. I never knew you could put entire posts up there like that. I always thought there was a one line - 80 character limit or something. Never cared to test it myself. Interesting. Fucking with the enveloppe a little is never bad in my book. We can't call that "empty void of space" for sure, this time.
angel - Yes, absolutely, Gina knows her way around a good hook. For some reason, that particular song has evolved in my head over time. That one inspires me. I ended up personnalizing it. I sometimes hear it with heavy John Bonham drum poundings and Kashmir-like heavy guitars in place of the keyboards and it fits her rendering of the melody perfectly. But remember, I might be delirious-delusional and the song is mighty fine the way it is, don't read me wrong here. I can't wait to see if this is the same version of the song I have on tape. Mailman, wake up now! A lazy Canadian civil servant, mine is. Typical.
Clas - Ok let's count the ones I know about: The Steely Damned, The Steely Fan Band, The Royal Scam, Stealin' Dan (although not Americans) and huh... If there's more, they're probably real shitty. If I had one, I'd call it The Gauchos and perform in full gaucho regalia. That could be fun.
ole - I thought listing was one of the deadly GB sins at one point but again, I am often delusional and imagine things. You know, your French is rather good, btw. It almost sounds Quebecish with the "T'es" instead of "Tu es". I'm impressed. Faisons la moue, pas la guerre, mon amie. T'es cool.
Mu - I think there's a
play-by-play of the ceremony on that cleveland.com web site or a simulcast, I'm
not sure. I think you have to become a forum member or something. Will check
again.
and I think Big Fan came around with a third post of that same Billboard link.
That might represent a GB record, who knows? Anyway, you can't whine you get no
info around here.

There are probably hundreds of Steely-coverbands in USA, but they have no friends on this GuestBook and have no connection whatsoever with mr Fogel and Le Bar Bet.
