So finally Pete Fogel shows up in chat tonight and everyone
is there as
themselves and guess who i'm logged in as?
You guess it, Godzilla...
Everyone got to ask Pete all sorts of interesting questions
but I got
totally ignored because nobody takes a large
B-movie dinosaur seriously. I
tried to show him that I was
more than just a highly agitated million year
old T-Rex with a
spite against the city of Tokyo, but he just could'nt
see
through my overwhelmingly massively scaley exterior. He
did'nt
realize that all I ever wanted to be was a dancer.
From my earliest years in Dinosaur Ballerina School I strove
to prove
myself. After many years of painstaking lessons and
performances I had
finally reached the threshold of my
dreams...the Tokyo stage. But did i
recieve the recognition
I was due? Was I allowed to be part of a Tokyo
dance troupe?
NO! All they did was put me in those stupid dinosaur
movies...
Well naturally I was bitter... Bitter with the city of Tokyo
for robbing
me of my one true love...dancing. It was then
that I turned. If I could'nt
be on the Tokyo stage then
NOBODY would be on the Tokyo stage!!
And the voices in my head said "DESTROY TOKYO! Repay them
for what
they've done!", and so I did... The rest is history
but still people like
Pete Fogel judge me. Still they
only see the noise and distruction and
numerous battles
with sea monsters and giant moths. Still they refuse to
accept me for the premier ballerina that I am.
One day, I swear, one day the world will see that I too
have feelings. I
too wish to paint and make music and
cook like Pat Beemer. Someday...in the
world to come I'll
be accepted as an artist and not just another B-movie
has been.
Thank You.
Just enjoying the family atmosphere at my youngest sisters place(so why am I on the Net? My neice was cruising).
Steviedan: Noticed you speaking nicely of Sakamoto. Love his stuff but never know when there's something new. Has there been any thing since Heartbeat, besides 'smoochy"? Musical Encyclopedia is my favorite.

Wayne Krantz, ex-sideman with Steely Dan, Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham and
others, gave it all up to lead a band in NYC with Tim Lefebvre and Keith
Carlock. With a growing, cult-like, underground international following - the
band has shunned mainstream label involvement - a new album, "Greenwich Mean"
(available only on the WK website) and an extraordinarily powerful and
creative live show, the group defines the current state of the electric
improvisational art. Deeply grooving and interactive, highly individualized
and relentlessly innovative, this music undermines Establishment complacency
at every turn. For further information:

fezo: Can't say 7 Worlds Collide *floored* me, but darned good for a live rock album with Johnny Mar of the Smiths, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway of Radiohead with Sebastian Steinberg on bass as a very good band. I'll have to admit that Eddie Vedder singing the Tim Finn songs is fairly weird, but Tim's so eclectic it kinda works....and i do skip over Lisa's turn... The highlights are Neil's version of the Smiths' There's a Light that Never Goes Out," his own Loose Tongue, originally from Try Whistling This (1998) and Turn and Run from the import One Nil (2001). Have you seen the DVD Sessions at West 54th yet? It's essentially a live version of the album Try Whistling This which has that 11 ToW anti band feel...
I can more highly recommend the studio albums One Nil (soon One All in
release in the US/Canada either April or May?), Try Whistling This, CHs
Together Alone (1993) (which features Neil's best songs) and Temple of Low Men
(1988). Woodface (1991) is the best engineered album, but more pop oriented as
the edge that Tim and Neil have on their own compositions is missing when they
write by committee. Neil's own songs Fall at Your Feet, Whispers and Moans, As
Sure as I Am and Four Seasons in One Day recorded before Tim joined CH for the
rest of Woodface are superb where Tall Trees and Weather With You are pleasant
nonsense. They do harmonize well on Woodface and on occasions subsequent
albums including 7 Worlds. I can't recommend Finn (1995), the Finn Brothers
"demo" collaboration album...
It is rumored that the first US single will be Driving Me Mad, a slow burn song with a soaring melody that lifts into a classic Neil Finn powerful chorus, and reminds me a little of Love This Life from Temple of Low Men...Great song - way too good to be a hit in the post- post- modern Clear Channel dayz...
Elvis was more than o.k., but unfortunately our memories are clouded by the controlled substances sated dirigible he became in his later years. In the beginning, his charisma and almost osmosislike adoption of the r & b sounds of Mississippi and Memphis made him a groundbreaking performer of his own creation. Colonel Parker was not in sight--yet--and Sam Phillips "only" provided the studio time and his marketing genius.
There's an excellant book recounting this time, which I believe won the Pulitizer. Unfortunately, the name fails me at the present. It's a great read; the bits on Phillips schleping Sun's discs throughout the south are almost worthy of their own book. And you'll want to strangle Parker when he intervenes and stops a dream team collaboration between Elvis and Lieber and Stoller.
Mu: I've been trying to get into the Finn live set you recommended, but it hasn't floored me like I thought it would. Vedder just doesn't work as a collaborator and the mix of Lisa Germano's song stops the CD in its tracks.
My favorite purchase of late . . . the latest (2001) release from Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros. The words are only a little more comprehensible than his Clash stuff but the eclectic world music vibe propels you just to roll another one, not toward anarchy in the streets.
Steeve, she's really blowing off Wu in favor of W1P ;-)
Steveedan: I have Easter related activities going on today and tomorrow. Always busy at my house around any Christian/Jewish Holidays. No Wu for me. Have a good time and drive safe between the gigs.
Duncan: I checked out your site (nice site, btw) and never found the pictures by the sea. Where are they? Good luck to Linda (and you).
very limited for DVD-As....unlabelled
StevIeDan: I was in our local Best Buy scoping out for "Dig." The slection was very limited, the section unlabbeled and mixed up with CD DTS 5.1s - they have a similar size jewel box (a little bigger than CD boxes with the long side up - the disks are oh so slightly wider as well). I would be interested to hear Dig on DVD-A.
I don't have the CD, but many of the songs on Liquid Audio or other MP3s. In contrast with the organic Come on Home (Grammy winning tribute album) and Some Change, Dig goes for a hyper-produced funk-soul groove thing in the Erykah Badu/Sade mode. None of melodies are not as lyrical as Harbor lights or It's Over...and many just lay down a groove like the latter Sade albums. Dig starts off real strong with the funky Payday, then soulful on Sarah, and jazzy on Ms. Riddle, featuring Roy Hargrove's accents. David Paich's end of the production really help here. Some of the rest of the songs like Vanishing are quite good, but there's a questionable try at hip hop "Got it on the Natch" and a few of the songs just lie there. Perhaps they might some alive on DVD-A. I could be the escessive urban drumm loops (the late great Jeff Porcaro is sorely needed) or co-producer Danny Korthmar's linclination for a "flat" sound. He produced Don Henley and Jackson Browne in the 80s. I better put my asbestors thermal suit on. But Building the Perfect Beast (DH) is a collection of darn catchy songs. Korthmar gave it a stale 80s feel - and it's a shame now. It was more apparant on End of the Innocence has 4 great (title track, Heart of the Matter, Last Worthless Evening, and New York Minute) and a bunch of modest ones made pretty much unlistenable by Kortchmar's unimaginative production where he tryies to get the Heartbreakers to play like the Cars...it would be bizarre if it wasn't so boring...
Anyway, after the first three songs, don't expect comeback production that shines like the golden days of Miss Sun, Breakdown Dead Ahead or Jojo (my favorite Toto song - nevever liked their own songs much except for 99 and Africa and their lead singer was irritatiing)
Talk about a deal! If you're looking to get into digital recording, Musician's Friend has the Roland VS-1880 HD for just $1,399.

Good morning everyone --
I still gotta go to sleep. It is a late one for me (4 AM in Los Angeles and I gotta get up at 9 AM and take the little one to his music class).
Duncan - I still haven't listened, but I KNOW it's going to be great. Thanks again. I am still blown away by the package nonetheless. My family's thoughts and prayers are with you and Linda. Everything will turn out for the best. I still have not taken my son to see the seaside yet. I must do that this spring and summer.
W1P - thanks for the heads-up on Dark Star Orch. I spoke to Super Dave 30 minutes ago. I hope you all knock 'em out tonight in Calabasas. I might make it since you are playing till 11 PM and Doctor Wu ...
SHAMELESS PLUGGING !!!
Doctor Wu is playing at the world famous Whisky-A-Go-Go tonight from 8 PM to 9:30 PM. It's $12 to get in, but with the discount coupon, it's $10. If anyone wants to go, let me know and I will e-mail a coupon to you, or go to the Doctor Wu website and you can download one yourself. Many of us Los Angeles Steely Dan tribute band people will be there to cheer our bretheren on. It's gonna be GREAT!!! Angel, can you come to this one? Let me know.
Molly - I did respond to your e-mails. They did find their way to me. Did you get any of my replies? Let me know.
And finally, to Schwinn -- My still-under-wraps-band CD is on it's way to you. Further details are in an e-mail to you.
OK, off to bed for me.

Elvis was ok, considering the times. He borrowed quite a bit from the black performers, but white America, for the most part had very little exposure to blues or jazz back then.I talked with my Dad about Elvis once.He told me stories about people's reaction to Elvis. Most were pretty unkind.I think ole Elvis had soul, that should count for something.
got the things you sent jj.where did you find the 3 ft.Tigger? He loved it.S showed up, you wouldn't have had anything to do with that?I keep imaging him at gallery with all the little gay guys fawning over him. It's official, he's a mountain with tatoos.I feel like we're 11 again. All we need is the secret hand shake.I'll be home after 1:30.It's ok,people love who they love.
Duncan-good thoughts and prayers out to you....I hope everything turns out okay.
Jim#-String Cheese on Friday, Dr. John on Saturday night, and Jazzfest all weekend long, man, can this get anymore fun?????????

We could do the Radiators and Phil Lesh and Gov't. Mule too but that would involve staying an extra week. Some hardship.

Winco-Sdan: listned to any good cd's lately.....
I've seen the Radiators too. Lots of fun for sure. Although I liked the opening act better -- Mother Hips.
But, by far the best band for obtaining the Dead vibe but retaining their
own sense of style is String Cheese Incident. I know I've been babbling about
them for some time now but they are the real deal and I'd HIGHLY recommend
them to all DanHeads. They're like the Dead except they are honestly hot
musicians. Blending Jazz, Bluegrass and Rock rhythms into familiar but unique
sound. They do an AWESOME cover of Weather Report's Birdland. It's fantastic.
Vocals are a little weak, but otherwise they're a gassss.
Hey AGNG and DSO fans-if anyone is missing a Dead-style concert, I HIGHLY recommend catching The Radiators! I saw them out here a week ago, and the place was packed with ex-Deadheads and sundry others who just loved to dance. The Radiators play an ecclectic bunch of tunes with loooooong, extended grooves that you just can't sit still for (except for the deadbeats who accompanied me to the show, but that's another story). Anyway, catch them if you can!
Sorry Steviedan, but yes, I did!
Dime swirl,
Aja
Where the hell have you been, Elijah, with that Emma again?!
Honeycake, I'm home.
FARRELLY brothers film...
indulge me, i just had to see that in print as i am listening to a fairly steely-vibed album called "ryuichisakamotosmoochy" by you guessed it, ryuichi sakamoto. some of his stuff is ass, but this is the best one i've ever heard. even rundgren-y. sporadically brazilian. it's got a great beat and i can dance to it...
z, as you recall or maybe not, we have discussed tommy harrell before and i was previously aware of his condition(s), but thanx of course. i agree totally that this team is the height of mainstream jazz and have every available recording and more than a few that no longer are. i would fully expect phil to be absolutely eaten up with the classic cynical genius syndrome. you know, where you are normally driven to suicide over how ignorant and banal humanity can be and ultimately is. he would be a prime candidate for this and thank god he's hanging with us... not literally, of course...
mu, now i remember you discussing this album (boz new) some. please, if you don't mind, remind me of your overall impressions. dvd-a would be an excellent choice if only ol' stevie weren't still livin' in the 20th video century. i do have a few dvd's, but no player yet. i did the same thing with cd's. i'm perpetual old school...
dano, wasn't me, myself, & irene a coen brothers film ? and yes, i remember reading that they were fans. actually i think it may be some other brothers (ferelli or sumthin'?). anyway, there were two of them and yes they are dan fans. the soundtrack is a trifle, a novelty. worth having, but many of the artists on there were not the best choices and played more music on that one dan tune than they will in the entire rest of their careers combined... harsh but true...
aja, take yo badu self and go get the first two, "baduizm" and "live". you'll love 'em both. pick up angie stone's first one while you're there. not the new one, the first one. all Bee-Ayyy-Deeeeeeee. now, as for lumping christopher cross with milli vanilli, i know you didn't mean that...

" AGNG--it is EXTREMELY unlikely if not impossible for there to be a cd or tour this week, from what I can tell."
Oleander ~ Thanks for the response. I assume you mean "this year". Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing, since it's getting a little late. However, always the optimist, I can hope. Thanks also to the other person who responded awhile back; I think it was aja? There are a lot of kind, intelligent, helpful people on this GB, and you are appreciated.
On the Dark Star Orchestra topic, St Al asked a question, and I tried to answer it briefly, without a lot of detail, because I know for whatever reason a bunch of folks here have some anti-Dead sentiment. Then comes a comment "dirty..fucking..hippies" and something about a "shamless (sic) plug for DSO." Real nice, folks. Perhaps getting out and shaking your bones would do you some good. Remember live music? Dancing? Laughing? Having fun? Smiling at strangers? Sure beats sittin' around sniping at people on the internet!
So, probably another summer without Steely Dan. As it is, there is so much great music going on this spring and summer, I won't be able to even go hear half of what I'd like to.

steviedan- Harrell is a schizophrenic who is always on some drug for his
illness. That is the reason for his spaced-out-ness. I've seen him play twice
and spoke to him both times and was surprised to see him more animated when in
conversation.
Phil is normally a nice guy when he's doing his own gigs,
but LG and I were talking about how he was at a jazz clinic and as a private
teacher, where he seems to "act out" a bit. That anecdote about my ex-friend
(don't ask)offering him 10% for his "life's work" (as Phil put it)and PW's
reaction, make sense to me. I'm familiar with the arrogance of this person and
I'm surprised PW didn't beat the shit out of that jerk!
PW is, without the
slightest doubt, our greatest living mainstream jazz improviser, but he's not
happy with people like Wynton Marsalis, etc... getting all the recognition. I
just came from a local Tower Records and was amazed to see not one PW record
there, and not even a PW section!
You have to be pretty masochistic to try
to make a living as a jazz musician nowadays.
AGNG--it is EXTREMELY unlikely if not impossible for there to be a cd or tour this week, from what I can tell.
lcpaul--YO!
Hutch--Next time Dennis Chambers hits your place, let me know.
LG- Okay, but I think we should have a chaperone for our historical
mating-I mean meeting. I've heard many stories about you cruel Pennsylvanian
women taking advantage of poor, innocent NY boys such as myself.
The
otterhound has just boarded the plane to his new home in Michigan, so he won't

will be happy to pay for his round trip ticket to Newark Airport.
hey molly, no apologies necessary, we understand. you've been stressed out, we've been stuck undergoing the same enzymatic pathway and got a little punchy......as long as we keep making ATP it'll all be okay in the end.

An addendum to the recent thread on Los Bros Marotta: last night I heard a surprisingly good song on eMpTyV by one John Mayer--cannot for the life of me remember the song title, but the album is called "Room for Squares." Despite the album name, the song was not squaresville at all--quite jazzy in a low-key way, with some excellent playing. I just got a breather here at work (very busy day) and went to look up the album on CDNow. Guess who's on drums? Jerry Marotta. Way kewl.

greetings from hooterville! I spent most of my day attending a workshop on mediation..kinda apt don't ya think?sorry I was so touchy.. as I explained, I'm computer-challenged.I'm not sure what is etiquett on here..probably not cussing like a sailor, and showing your butt :}I hate the fact that I'm having to post messages instead of contacting my friend in a normal way. yeah..I should probably leave cell phone on.I refuse to detract from the things that I'm passionate about.I'm an artist..I wouldn't get anything done with the constant interruptions... in any case I will try to veer away from such personal things....You guys have probably already discussed this way back when, but I love the fact that Rikki has two melody lines intertwined.. "The Look Of Love" by Sergio Mendez, and the other one simultaneously. It was very interesting to read about Paul Schaffer's cousin being the subject of that song.I always assumed that the song was about Rickie Lee Jones. She had that wild, yet vulnerable persona that our boys seem to find so attractive.Just saw another critter in yard, I just know a buffalo is going to appear any time now.Everything else has shown up..

Randy, Duncan-amen! I wasn't expecting Ridley Scott to get any nods from the Academy, being as Oscar is the acting equivalent of the Grammies: a lot of Milli Vanilli's and Christopher Cross's, with the occasional Steely Dan breaking through. I believe Ridley Scott will be more appreciated for his work as time goes by and people see how innovative and visionary he is (especially against the backdrop of crap being churned out). "Titanic" as Best Picture? Yeah, it's right up there with "A Beautiful Mind"!
Aja
Sorry to hear of the passing of Milton Berle and Dudley Moore.

Steeve -- Dark Star Orchestra 4/17/02 @ HOB Sunset Strip.
Cheers to 'Aja' for her hailing of (director) Ridley Scott... Anyone
with a directorial history that includes "Alien" (1979), "Blade Runner"
(1983), "Black Rain" (1989), and "Thelma and Louise" (1991) is clearly someone
to be reckoned with. In an era of rampant commerciality, style over substance,
and the impending extinction of artistic integrity, Scott stands out as a
director a cut above the rest.
Now if only there were more directors with the artistic vision of Stanley Kubrick instead of the overtly commercial James Cameron or Ron Howard, there might be some hope for the film medium aside from product for mere entertainment and revenue.

Guys , Last night i got a copy of Jim Carrey in Me,Myself ,And Irene. I am
not a big fan of his but decided to watch it for free on Sky TV , And i expect
you guys have talked about this before . But I didnt get to see the Soundtrack
listing but there was an awful lot of Steely songs on there.
Who were the
band doing all the Steely songs and why was there such a tie up with all the
songs. Was the Director a big Fan or something??Has anyone got any info on this
, as it would be appreciated.
Regards Dano.

I would love to see Dark Star Orchestra. A Grateful Dead tribute band. Maybe I can do some shamless plugging for them. I wonder if there is a "bizarre bazare" outside of their shows with the hippies and etc. selling their wares.
I wonder if they will come to Los Angeles. The adapted quote might go something like this ...
They are not the best at copying what they do, they are the only ones who do justice to copying what they do.
And to Pass the "Doobie Please" ... just remember ... One man gathers what another man spills.

lisa g and z, i saw phil woods maybe 15-16 years ago and aside from playing brilliantly of course, was quite cordial and friendly to the small club crowd. tom harrell, aside from playing with equal mastery, was the human version of stonehenge... but who gives a shit anyway. the nice person stuff is not requisite for me. it's always nice, of course, but the beauty of the music transcends...

St Al, I've seen Dark Star Orchestra twice. First time was in 1999 at Palookaville in Santa Cruz, CA, second time was at the Fillmore in SF about a year later. Both shows were very good, and I would definitely go see them again. John Kadlecik is extremely adept at getting the Jerry feel across. The whole thing worked pretty well for me, with just a couple of minor rough spots at each show.
The crowds at both shows were wonderful. Dancing, spinning, smiling, happy happy happy people. You just close your eyes and lose yourself in the moment, and I swear, it almost takes you back there. The vibe, at least at the two shows I attended, was near perfect. I was afraid that the whole thing might weird me out a bit, but quite the contrary, it was very sweet and reverant, yet high-octane, too.
Check 'em out ; )

You were being pretty F**king nasty.Sorry if things sounded a little soap opera-ish.There is a pscho-girlfriend, we do talk on phone whenever we can catch each other. He lives 3 states away,I have an autistic child and my own bussiness.Whatever free time I have usually is real late at night.Since we'd been playing phone tag for about 3 weeks, the message seemed like a good idea. His brother is my bussiness partner,We have a show coming up in 2 weeks.I have been working 16-20 hours a day to hold things together. So you nasty prick...Fuck you
jjeff - yes the ian dury thing was the "Making of Aja"
why ian? I ponder that myself, late 70's punk admires jazz hipsters
I
believe Dury haspassed away within the last year
the making of aja is great, although I for one would love to see all the footage, not just snippets
those poor musicians that laid that guitar track to peg

StAl: Kudos and a wave for the long overdue "Elvis is not God" nod.
Of course, in this area of the south (and you well know where) that is akin to merchandising prophylactics in Jerry Falwell's garage.
Aja, Wormy, Oleander, Aus, Lady B: Check out the Jazzfest main site for an update on security measures.
That DVD Audio page Randy mentions is interesting. Reminds me of so many places on the net where a few opinionated people manage to cloud the overall picture.
Hmmm...sounds kinda familiar.
At least they scored higher than Hootie and the Blow Chunks did.
Ok you Deadheads. Anyone catch Dark Star Orchestra yet? This is the tribute band that recreates a Grateful Dead show in it's entirety each night. Listening to some clips on their website -- the dude is channeling Jerry. It's a beautiful thing. Hoping I can catch them when they're in Seattle but it's the day before we leave for vacation so I don't know...

Saw a "classic album" bit on SD's Aja with a few comments by Ian Drury throughout. Can someone explain the connection? Was this the much-discussed "Making of Aja " that I've never seen?

tied to the couch monday and dragged out the October Tribute to America concert on DVD (the 2 disc er)SOrry don't have cable and vh1, so missed it earlier. The film contributions were great, thanks Woody! That family standing with Meg Ryan had me in tears and Bon JOvi actually did a nice stretched out version of Living on A Prayer and Dead or ALive, only to blow it with typical bombastic stuff. THat David LEtterman sidekick with his band again exuded extreme heavly handedness to many tunes, and I think someone forgot to call Ray Davies about the brit envasion 36th aniversary tour (thank god Peter Noone was already doing casinos). BOwie's Hero's was saved by horns and a nice sustained string bending guitar, James Taylor was gracious as ever and Melissa had a nice touch with Bruce's Born to Run. Show stealer was operaman! WOuld have loved to have dragged out Lou Reed, Neil Young or RObert Dylan on short notice. Enjoyed seeing Hillary and Richard Gere getting booed, yes New Yorker's can and do call you on insincerity. Anyway, a fitting tribute for all the loss, but next time would somebody rewrite a line or two to make it poignent?

Binky-I'm posting this all over the Internet because your wacko girlfriend is deleting your e-mail, erasing my phone messages, and adding amnesiacs to your food. Lisa G - By hook or by crook? When I was in concert (and marching) band in

By the way... what's the definition of

Chip, sorry to be rude,Drew is a Dan fan almost as much as I am.We can and do discuss S.D. for hours.I'm posting message everywhere I can in hopes he'll see it.His girlfriend thinks I'm hot for him...she erases messages, deletes mail ect...If I'd wanted him, we would have been together long before he met her little narrow butt.:} Hope posting message wasn't rude.I'm not too sure about etiquette on here? I'm hoping he'll be surfing and see message.I know he will be into some of the Dan sites,"Sybil" isn't a fan of S.D.Like me, Drew will have to have a Dan fix.My little wild one is on spring break this next week.I hope it turns nice outside...hell could be defined as having a 5 year old cooped up in the house for 3 days.
Um Molly - who is Drew?
Opie is "king of the world," as far as he knows...
I have always been a fan of Steely Dan and Elvis.
This is a good
site.Too badthere isn't much about the great Elvis.
Why???????
Guys was reading last few days messages. These little girls are drinking to rebel...The media glamorizes drinking and showing your ass, hence most young women think "I want to be cool and sophiscated like the babes on M.T.V." So they drink to show everyone how grown-up they are. It's a shame somebody didn't teach them better.St.Al's right about the pig stuff.A stand-up kind of woman doesn't need to be drunk to sleep with a man,or to try new things. If you want to be with that person you say "yes".If not, no amount of booze in the world would change my mind.
I tell my younger friends that there are some rules they should try to live
by:
1.Don't screw anybody that you don't like.(no matter how attracted you
are to that person)
2.Don't drink with people you can't trust.

Randy: your brother is soooooo right....
Hey, did somebody call me?
There is a web site out there that reviews DVD Audio discs. The web site is called Digital Audio Guide. On this site, contributors rate various discs. Included on the list is 2VN.
http://www.DigitalAudioGuide.com/dareview/music/ratings_highest.htm
The problem is, many people who dislike Steely Dan have reviewed the disc and given it the lowest ranking. I'm fine with people who don't like our boys, but c'mon, rank the quality of the disc and don't make it personal. My brother has the disc, and he says it is outstanding and amazing, incredible sound.
If you can, take the time to send a review to this site, and up the average ranking by giving it a "5" rating, which I did. Down with these losers who don't like The Dan.

22 member jazz band, wonder who the studio musicians were?
Jimbo-here's another amen. And yes, the first and second season of "Sex and the City" are out on video and DVD.
Forgot to rant about Ron Howard winning best director! "A Beautiful Mind" was "Happy Days" meets schizophrenia. It was pretty to look at but way sanitized for television-no wait, it's a movie, right? The most adventurous director of those five was Baz Luhrmann, but the best was Ridley Scott for Black Hawk Down, hands down. You don't just watch a Ridley Scott film, you feel it, and feel it for days afterward.
Hey, a month from today we'll be at Jazzfest!
Back to looking busy,
Aja
Aja- Is that episode of Sex and the City out on Video and DVD yet?
Also- Didn't I tell you that Opie Cunningham would win Best
Director.
Opie Cunningham, Opie Cunningham, Opie Cunningham, Opie
Cunningham.
High Fives and two AMENS to Denzel and Halle.
I can tell you that those two always had the talent and skills to make
it
as leading actors, but Hollywood and the mainstream media, at times,
took them for granted.
Now it's time for the big boys in Hollywood to suck up and admit
that
everyone's on the same boat and that there's more to Blacks in films
than just stereotypes (comical, oversexed, malt liquor, hair extensions,
etc.)
And that goes for both filmmakers white and black.
To those filmmakers: In the case of Halle Berry, a African-American woman
is not a piece of meat withou a brain. She's a human being. If
these
filmmakers and script writers write more respectable, and complex
roles for her, Angela Bassett, Brandy, Whoopi, etc, then they'd get a
better
perspective of America in general.
Since this is a SD GB, one question: Was Donald and Walter ever
nominated
for "FM?"
Hi all......
It sure was great to see Halle Berry and Denzel (no last name needed) get the recognition they deserve. Denzel, oh my, Denzel!
Best gown: Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman
Best tux: Denzel, oh my!
Worst boobs on display: Gwyneth Paltrow. Honey, those things looked so droopy and sad, give 'em a little support!
Haven't heard any Steely rumblings since 9/11, but have been catching up on back episodes of "Sex and the City" and there are plenty of subtle Steely references there. The last one I picked up was "Chained Lightning" playing in the bar as Samantha got dumped by her loser date.... and of course, the episode where the photographer offered Steely Dan to Samantha to get her in the mood to pose nude. I'm sure D&W got a chuckle out of that.

Gina: Now that I've finally "gotten it", Try Whistling This, what a work of art it is! Pre-conceived notions as a CH and Enz fan are stubborn impediments indeed...really enjoying the "left of center" recordings of Souvenier, title track, Sinner, Loose Tongue, Astro, Dream Date, and Faster Than Light...suddenly near the top of my Neil Finn list with Together Alone and perhaps above Temple of Low Men...
I gave the Academy Awards show a miss, and instead watched Blues Brothers

"Blue Lou" Marini blowin' and steppin' out. The Skunkster, beret and all, in

was just an excuse to get all those musicians together. I just wish someone

Of course, everything I know about the fife and drum could be just malarky that I conjured up in my brain. Wait I'll go look up some stuff.
The Marotta brothers are also listed in the directory. Jerry, incidentally, is listed as "Jerome" while Rick has a c/o addy. Smart guy. I could be a groupie with this book in hand. Somebody hose me down!

T-::raspberries:: to you, too. TWICE you had to bust me. LOL!
Enimen-aw, geez...nice to see you out of lurkdom. Any chance you can make it down to NYC next week for another songfest?
YGK-Congrats on all the new work. Looking forward to seeing you. We won't be free this Wednesday due to Passover obligations, unless you are playing late. I would love to come up afterwards to celebrate the "Divine One," but we'd never get there for 8. Next week would be better for us, but definny gots to get there.
Duncan-a fife is a transverse pipe-like instrument with a similar range as the modern keyed piccolo. However, a fife has no keys so the player must produce varied pitches by covering, uncovering and half-covering (also known as "half-holing") holes bored out of the tube using various finger combinations. Aussie is right on about it being a popular instrument to be paired with the field drum, which is a large framed membranic drum, a bit larger than the modern snare that had its own set of snares, although from what IÆve heard, some did not. The drummer would hoist the drum over one shoulder with a sling. The drum would then be tilted from left to right which required the drummer to play with a "traditional style" grip on the drum sticks. This is an unmatched grip that many drummers of yesteryear played with. My brother who is 35, started lessons when he was a boy using traditional grip. It hasn't been until very recently that matched grip (perfectly even grips with both hands) is being taught. Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent, but the next time you see an olde fife and drum picture, you will remember the slanted, slinged drum and the little pipe. I have looked up fife players in the Local 802 directory--none listed. I'll ask around. Meanwhile, I've found an interesting bit of trivia. Eliane Elias is listed in the NY Union book as a flute player, among other things. Who knew?
Great "new" cd that's just slammin' us here in the store today... You guys just *gotta* check it out... it's called

LG - my contribution to the Marotta Bros thread: Jerry is on the new Tony

quickly de-lurking to pick up that Rick Marotta thread.
I'm sitting on an American flight a few weeks ago. The plane is circling, and the video is looping. I am watching what is apparently the entire last season of "Everybody Loves Raymond."

Glad to read of the "cease fire". Brothas gonna work it out!
In lieu of an official steviedan "Album of the Week"(tm) I'd like to mention the new Billy Bragg cd - England, Half English - has finally gotten the new Cracker cd out of the cd player here at work... especially check out the tunes 'NPWA' ( No Power Without Accountability) and the beautiful (even somewhat "steely-ish") 'Some Days I See the Point'... great album all over.
Glad Randy Newman finally won last night... was worth wading through all that self-importance (the telecast) to hear his acceptance speech, though really, he's written *much* better songs that lost. I thought McCartney was robbed this year... and imho... so was LotR(tFotR), though I admit I haven't seen A Beautiful Mind... but I saw Rain Man... ok... some of it...
and in closing, I'd like to leave you with this pleasant thought:

G - in response to your last poser, are the Kennedy's gun-shy? And by the way, all you Little Feat fans, there is a fat man in the bathtub, with the blues.
Been listening to Negative Girl a LOT lately, on my Sennheisers, through a Rotel amp. What a fucking awesome piece of music. Also been listening to track 13 on Santana's Supernatural. Ouch, it's so good, it hurts.
Glad Crowe didn't bag Best Actor. Think Cinematography should've gone to Richard Deakins though for his work on BOTH "A Beautiful Mind" and "The Man Who Wasn't There". Mind you, haven't seen "Lord of the Rings" yet.
Never could stand that dog.
Clas- It was ME, not YGK. Give me a call loser.
hear hear for PEACE, Malcolm & Clas :-)
good steely dan-ish site in the url above
have fun
aus, do you want to this one on or should i?
Listen up guys!
Just finished watching a CNN special report on female college
binge
drinking. It seems that 44 percent of all college
women admit to binge
drinking at least once in the last
2 weeks.
One Lisa Diebold, a Syracuse University senior, has an
interesting
perspective on this phenomenon which I feel
could be of major importance to
us guys. According to
Lisa, women who binge drink are actually doing it to
advance the cause of feminism. It seems that, according
to Lisa, by
drinking as much as the men, women are
knocking down one of the last
barriers to equality
amongst the sexes. Lisa says that college women
should
wear their binge drinking like a "badge of honor".
Huddle up guys....
Hmmmm...You mean all we have to do in order to
get
these ladies into bed is appeal to thier sense of
feminism? Wahoo!!
We don't have to get them drunk
anymore cuz' Lisa and her friends are doing
that for us
already.
Ok, next time you're out with one of these "enlightened" females,
try
something like this...
"You know women in the past never used to have sex on the first
date
because they were repressed. I'm so glad i'm out with you."
"You've had 8 drinks now, do you feel more equal yet? It would
be so
cool if you empowered yourself by forcing me down on the
bed right now."
"You mean you've never tried this position? This
draconian
male-dominated, sexist society has obviously kept this
information from you. Let's remove the shackles of sexist
opression and
let your soul soar to new hieghts of self
actualization!"
Ok guys, you see where we're going here?
Good! Now let's get out
there and put it to good use.
Thanks to Lisa Diebold of Syracuse
University.
She's either the dumbest chick to ever graduate from
college,
or the answer to all our dreams!
:)
Duncan: A fife is a small flute...often associated with a drum corps...kind of like the pictures you see of the American Revolutionaries as they battled the British forces....pictures depicted wounded dudes playing the fife and a snare drum......hope it helps.

Just wanted to clear some things up and do some shameless plugging of my own........
THIS falls into the NO BULL Category:
Around lunch time Saturday, I got
a call from Clas - the man himself. He was calling to inquire if it was me who
was (apparently) posting negative over the weekend.
As I don't have a
computer at home, and only here at work, I told him no. We had a friendly
conversation, and both agreed to make our peace. We both admitted that we each
had had our share of negative moments, and I informed him that any future
negative perceptions would be just friendly ribbing......
I must admit it
took a firm set of cujones to call, and as I've been very busy with music, I
really don't have time to be negative......
so, folks, I'm resolved to
either ignore any future negativity sent towards me, and will refrain from
creating any of my own.......
peace to all
Now - I must drop some info on you all - the former rhythm section from
Tycoon Dog - myself, Billy Burtt and Peter Ray (who are still pictured on
their site, BTW) have formed a new trio: "Core"
Core will perform originals
by Mr. Hunter and Mr. Ray and feature Mr. Burtt on vocals as part of a
varietal, jazz and blues based set.
I have approximately 20 new songs I am
performing weekly at Coogans, 169th and Broadway, Wednesdays at 8 in
Manhattan, NYC. All material to be performed and recorded by Core.
Core is
recording next week two new songs, "Businessman" and "Eye to Eye", both
personal originals. The material recorded at I-Heights studios will be
submitted for the TM 2002 Compilation CD.
The working title for the album
is "Trying to Sort it all out", and is planned for release this Summer.
Now, also, Wednesday, March 27th is a big day - it's Sarah Vaughn's
birthday - and also mine. I'm having a special birthday gig up at Coogans:
169th/B'way, NYC starting 'round 8.....
I'm breaking out some new tunes,
Billy Burtt will be joining me on bass and vocals. So anyone NYC Local who
wants to come up for the gig Wednesday, please do. It's going to be a special
night.......
Cheers and peace.......

People , As New Awlins is fast approaching is there anyone taking some pix and sending them to our e-mails to see how you all get on .
Any Takers.

Message I received this morning fromDean Friedman
I really need a 'fife' player. Anyone out there in the NY area that knows a professional fife player, please drop me a line.
P.S. what is a ''fife''
Buffalo is nowhere near the Big Apple...
okay, Rick Marotta hi there Lisa G. too bad you not on the TM2002, would
love to hear more!!!
Marotta will perform in The Tralf, Buffalo's hottest
place to go take in music. i'm skipping a chance to hop on a plane to the Big
Apple next week, so soon after Sweden and stuff to take care of here, aaah,
temptation a zillion times ...
sigh.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying its great, I'm just saying its me.
PW-::raspberries::
z-my friend's name is Nick Driscoll. He still plays in and around the
Poconos and NE Pa in general. One of the most amazing saxophonists I know.
Heck, I've known him since we were kids. Lost touch with him since I got
married and moved here about 4 and half years ago.
I'd like to get together
with you sometime soon. We've been talking about it for too long. I'm on break
from 3/28-4/7. I'll be playing church gigs back home for the holidays, but I
will return to the area on 4/1. Let me know if you're free some afternoon or
night.
z- I think it's safe to say that if anyone knows what it's like to be bitter, it's you.
LG- Yeah, PW certainly has an attitude, a sax player I know said he saw him
picking fights with complete strangers at a bar once in NYC.
I think it's
safe to say that he's very bitter about being one of the last remaining giants
left, but not getting the gigs, recording contracts, etc... that all the
Afro-Americans seem to get. Back when I was a F-T musician, I could see that I
might wind up like that. I'm glad I got into teaching, now I don't give a shit
about any of that stuff.
What's the name of that friend of yours that
studied with PW?
He doesn't take many private students, I'd like to know
what type of stuff they worked on in the lessons.
I won't be online till
Thursday night, Spring Vacation! What a racket!
Doc Mu-Thanks for the info on the Flying Marotta Drummers. And to think, we were going to hop off to Cleveland next week, but changed our minds.
z-Re: PW-yeesh. Sorry, man. I really have no more stories. (I meant to tell you that.) IÆve seen him a few times in and around the Poconos. Incidentally I hung out with folks from the DWGap, but never lived there. I hail from the Wyoming Valley which is 45-50 minutes from the Gap. I also studied out there with Bob Dorough for a brief time (you know, Schoolhouse Rock?), and gigged a bit, too. My biggest Pocono brushes with greatness were gigs with George Young (session sax player whose claim to fame is filling in for a student of his,one Lenny Pickett [sp?] on SNL), bassist Paul Rostock, and a sit-in with the young Jesse Green (son of trombonist Urbie Green) at a popular jazz joint right outside Stroudsburg. A good friend of mine (the one from the lady/dog dancing episode mentioned in my last post) used to study with PW and often told us what a neurotic dude he was. So inside himself. I think I may have even spoken to him after a concert, but he was not extremely cordial. (I swear I said nothing to him about Billy Joel!) ThatÆs about it.
Stevee-hey! Jana Marie stole my ôWuö thunder. LOL! PM in concert here in central Jersey on April 10. IÆll be thinking of you whilst I drool over LyleÆs enormous hands.
Bill-öMoya Droga Jacekoham (spelling?) means that I love you soö...Kendall Park, here I come.
W1P-no questioning of your stripes, bro. I just wanted to find out what the whole concept of the TM compilation was all about. In the light of veteran JWÆs testimony, I say bring it on, whatever you wish to contribute. I can understand the copyright issue. I have been wrestling with it myself which is why I will not be going back to the studio I went to last year. Still trying to find a way to record that thang without getting a second party involved.
angel-nice tale of your Friday visit with SFB. Also, next time youÆre here, weÆll have to give you some keyboard parts to do. :)
Everyone-Yes, where is Steviedan these days?
angel, its true. Now you'll just have to wait for TM to come out to hear it. Here's a little spoiler -- there are hints of The Band, Neil Young, Nils Lofgren, Anthony Kledis and Ryan Adams in the peformance. Also, the backing band is Tortfeasor and not Which One's Pink?
Steeve, I am booking a hotel because bob says there will be a show. However, anyone who relies on these circumstances to make plans expressly assumes the risk and relieves me and bob from any liability whatsoever.
Now it's time for some more S H A M E L E S S .... P L U G G I N G, and a grievous scheduling conflict.
L.A.'s mighty Doctor Wu is appearing next Saturday night at the Whisky A-Go-Go on the (yep ...) world famous Sunset Strip. It will be a very festive ocasion. I plan to be there that night, which brings me to the grievous scheduling conflict ...
W1P's Which One's Pink? is appearing that same night at the Canyon Club in Agoura (or is it Calabasas?). There is no question that this will be a great show, as all of Pink?'s shows are great. Super Dave, saxist for both the Steely Fan Band as well as my new-still-under-wraps SD trib band will be playing with Which One's Pink?.
Once again, I wish that I could be in at least 2 places at the same time.
And finally, Fingers Shotan -- how did your Danny Steely Orchestra gig go last night. We humbly request a full (or fool) report.
OK ... anyone in chat right now?
Steveedan
Yes, I am indeed back from an interesting weekend. I do admit to playing
some key on the left side of the Yamaha. I don't know which one.... :-)
For
any that care about color reports, I have put it on a web page. For the rest
of you, I won't bore you with the details. Click the link above, or use
this.

W1P: You sang a song? WHAT! I don't believe it. :-)
Glad things are coming together for April 12th. Now, if we only knew
where....
Hello one and all ...
W1P - I would have loved to see Little Feat, but I really would have loved to see Pat Metheny. He played last night too, at the Universal Amphitheatre. I was too tired to go buy a last minute seat. So, I missed one of my favorite keyboard players ... Lyle Mays. Bill Payne from Little Feat is also one of my favorite keyboard players. Payne does some stuff on "Time Loves A Hero" that just knocks me out.
Anyway, Bob Tedde has confirmed a San Diego April 12th gig? Excellent. I will book a hotel today. This means that I will not be on hand in Long Beach on April 12 to play a Steely Fan Band gig (which is tentatively scheduled for the same weekend as the Long Beach Grand Prix). I am so tired of not seeing TSD. I will probably just do an "over-nighter" but I hope to meet St. Al, Miz Ducky, Aja (unless she is running in a decathalon, or dodecathon or something ...) and I will see if Craigster can make it.
To one of our local (to Los Angeles) G-B'ers, JayDubs - I hope that things go well with you this week at the doctor's. If you are feeling up to it, call or e-mail me. Maybe we can whip something impromptu up for the TechMoHo'02 CD. I am still trying to get something "presentable" from my new-still-under-wraps Steely Dan trib band, but, my lead singer/engineer/producer has been so busy with other stuff, that I fear that I might not have anything to send in to Schwinn. I am not giving up, though. And W1P (again) you STILL have my humble but heartfelt support for the inclusion of a Floyd tune for the compilation CD. For what it's worth.
I'm going to close this post right now, but I have more to add, so ...
love bob tells me that 4/12 is a go although the venue is still undetermined. Based on this, we've made arrangements to travel to Dan Diego for that weekend. Little Feat was really terrific last night. What a contrast between Eddie Money with no voice and a group of older musicians who were note perfect. What's interesting is the overwhealming reaction both nights to the W1P flyers -- a late 70s/80s crowd "I love the Wall" and a late 60s/70s crowd "I love Echoes" Oh, and and I've got the lead vocal on the new track I'm submitting and I don't think anyone here questions my Steely Dan stripes, do they?
Clas , Thanks for info and it settled a big argument, cheers.
W.I.P. Dan ,is that right they where from LA,that was a knew one on

thanks mate.

Any rumors or rumblings of a possible 2002 tour for the Dan? Time marches on, and you guys aren't gettin' any better lookin'. Play that funky music white boy... while you still can, and while we still care!
...your = you're
YGK - I've been doing great man... thanks for asking! Sounds like your
staying busy musically and that certainly is a good thing, eh?
I can think
of two pretty embarrassing moments on stage. Once I almost went right down on
the floor in the middle of a song when a weak board on the stage gave way and
my foot went through it. I fell backwards and half-way caught myself on a
stairstep deal that was right behind me (it was a weird stage).
The other
one was when I had just joined this band that was getting ready to go on the
road. They were doing their last hometown gig before taking off and I was
sitting in the audience. The singer introduced me as their new guitar player,
etc. and asked me to come up and do a few songs. So I get up there and mumble
"thank's very much. 'Preciate it". Whereupon my guitar strap comes off the
bottom of the guitar (my '57 strat) and I barely catch the guitar before it
hits the floor and in the process I catch the high E string with my finger and
break it. So then I have to go sit down and change a string while the band
plays another song. I felt about 2 inches tall!
Steely Dan missed moment...
Our store (music store) has clinics fairly
often where we bring in a well known artist who'll perform and then answer
questions, etc. We've had Dennis Chambers, Frank Gambale, Chester Thompson,
Victor Wooten. I understand even Vinnie did a clinic there a few years ago.
Anyway we had one last week with Sonny Emory on drums and Adam Nitty on bass.
I knew the name Sonny Emory was faintly triggering some kind of weak
electrical activity in my "brain". Of course it wasn't till the day after the
show that I realized he played on West of Hollywood! Sure would have been a
great chance to ask him about the session and his impression of D&W. Oh
well.
Hutch
Where is Bill?
That's a question I've been asking myself for quite
some
time...lol!
Lisa G,
Concerning the Fagen Land Development Inc. fiasco, all I can
say is that
we appear to have run into some significant
roadblocks with the Kendall
Park Building Department.
There appears to be some question as to Mr.Fagen's pedigree
so far as
the building industry is concerned. Although
FLDI has produced certain
documents which we feel verify
Mr. Fagen's expertise, such as his Doctorate
degree from
Berklee College of Music, numerous Grammy awards, and
even
a picture of Mr.Fagen holding a saw, the project
continues to be tied up in
red tape.
There does appear to be a small ray of hope though as we
have recently
been contacted by a representative of the
Kendall Park Building Department,
a gentleman by the name of
"Big Vinny", who assures us that the project may
still meet
it's deadline. All FLDI need do is submit the
appropriate
"Building Department Override Fee" to be assured of
swift
approval of all building permits and variances. Isn't that
great
news! They have some nice folks over there at the
town hall I tell you...
So keep your chin up Lisa, you're still in the running
for that 1957
Oldsmobile with the Hi-Fidelity AM sound
system!
Yes, and the Bobby Vinton album collection too!
where's Bill?
BILL! We miss'ya here!
Filthy Towelz Steeve! What a great story. Keep 'em coming dude!
C
Of course W1P is a musician. He appears on stage with Which One's Pink? at each show to provide his special blend of "effects". It could never be the same without him. Is there a confirmation yet of The Steely Damned playing on April 12th? Please advise, counselor.
Last night, The Steely Fan Band played to a packed house at The Studio Cafe in Newport Beach, California. The band's original lead singer was in the audience and came up on stage to sing Pretzel Logic with us. Mr. Pipes was still in excellent form. Our female backing vocalist Jana Marie sang lead on Doctor Wu, and also on The Boston Rag. It was great to hear these songs performed by a female's voice. Nothing will ever take the place of Donald Fagen, of course, but it was very interesting to hear a different approach.
We debuted the song The Royal Scam, and it went over very well. To open the 2nd set, Benny the Sax player and I did a 2-song duet of Any World (That I'm Welcome To) followed by Your Gold Teeth II. I played the Denny Dias signature guitar solo on piano. That was great fun and a huge challenge. Then our current lead singer, Ken, and Jana Marie joined Benny and me for Any Major Dude Will Tell You. We warmed up the crowd, mellowed them out for the duet and "acoustic" section of the show, then we polished them off with our fast paced song list for the 2nd half of the second set.
Our very own Angel was on hand to watch the entire show. And I have a special announcement to make. We have yet another performing musician in our midst. Angel came up to the stage while we played My Old School, and at the end of the song, I showed her what bass notes to play during the Outro, and she played the part perfectly !!! Check that out !!!
After the conclusion of the show, I stayed up on stage and played Dirty Work, Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me), and Babylon Sisters while a few of the audience folks hung out with me. It was kind of like a sing-along. There really are a lot of people who love this music. It is not just us guest book frequenters by a long shot.
Mr. Sticks invited us and about 2 dozen of his closest friends up to his hotel room across from the gig. I got home around 4 AM. When I finally woke up, I was wondering if I dreamed all of this. I have the video tape, so I know it's true. Plus, my fingers are still a little bit numb, so I know I had a good time.
Hey Fingers Shotan - I hope you knocked 'em out tonight -- Sincerely, Leadfingers.
My new still-under-wraps band is now looking for it's first gigs. As soon as we have secured some performance dates, I will post all about us.
Gee, I sure hope that the anti-cover band guest book folks can tolerate me or at least learn how to scroll past ... I carry enough guilt around with me just being out so many nights a week these days.
See you all soon ...
Steveedan
You're gonna love my track. Schwinn -- pull the plug on what I sent you. Something else will be coming by mail shortly.
Jay Dubz - producer and so in all its glory, but I think Hoops has the final word on this. After all, he's been backstage with our boys.
C da Pinko
W1P - I didn't know you were a musician. Sorry for my ignorance.
c
Lisa G - shit! One leg at a time. Thanks.
I'll throw my two cents on these:
Lance Bass planning to go to space. I guess the rumors are true. Not enough
for that punk kid to try to make himself and his publicity-hogging
band
important. Plus, he wants to take a camera crew to film him singing and
dancing in space with the russians. I have a better idea, SEND HIM TO THE
MOON. HOW? Get Ralph Kramden. He'll make it easy.
Is there any word on that upcoming Joni Mitchell CD? I've posted about twice but no word? What's the word.
OSCAR PICKS:
Best Movie: Lord of the Rings.
Best Actor: Denzel Washington. Crowe isn't that intense or exciting for
to be considered for two consecutive Oscars. Besides, anyone who worked
with Denzel have won Oscars (Julia, Russell and Angelina). Oh, and he did a
great villain job in Training Day. Of course they could have thrown in a
couple of Dan tracks in there.
Best Actress: Tough call. I hope it's a tie between Sissy Spacek and Halle Berry.
Best Supporting Actor: I hpoe it's a tie between Sir Ian and Jon Voight.
Best Supporting Actress: Undecided
Best Director: Opie Cunningham, Opie Cunningham, Opie Cunningham, Opie Cunningham. (Get the joke?)
That's all. See Ya!
LG- You completely ignored my plea for some Phil Woods stories from your
days in Pennsylvania! That is certainly not fair at all, considering I hipped
you to a PW story that only the hippest of the hip are privy to, last week.
Get typing, sis.
I learned Wednesday that I unknowingly played on my
first CD a while ago.
The big band I play in taped one of our gigs and is
using the CD to promote the band or something. They played it on WBGO, I
think. I couldn't give a shit anyway. I'm playing in a rehearsal band that is
doing some really difficult charts at ridiculous tempos. Very challenging.
Lisa G. ~ I've stayed out of the fray on the TM 2002 cover/non-cover issue...but as the producer of the first two compilations, and the guy who took the proverbial "bull by the horns" and made the concept into a reality in the first place...I say, the more the merrier! The ONLY reason I insisted on all original material the first two go-rounds was that my mastering guy was a stickler on copyright law, and refused to duplicate anything unoriginal with the express permission from the original composer ~ justifiably covering his ass in a town known for lawsuits at the drop of a hat.
Schwinn ~ I'm in for a submission, I'm just running a little bit behind. I went snowboarding up in Mammoth in late February, caught the flu, and it then turned into walking pneumonia. I took the antibiotics, which in turn majorly made my chronic hepatitis c flare up big-time...I'm starting to get some SCARY side-effects; going to the doctor again next week for blood work and another ultra-sound. Hopefully the news ain't too bad! Anyway, I'm hoping to get my music done by the end of the month, but I may need another week. Going surfing in Maui for ten days next month, hopefully that'll give my liver some stress-free rest!
Thanks to all for your concern re: my run-in with the friendly local mugger. There were reports of a knife-point bandit on the LA local news last night, and the description fit my "buddy" to the letter, so hopefully they'll catch this guy soon. It happened less than two miles from the "nice" neighborhoods that both myself and Steevedan live in. Can't wait to move out of this crazy town to some backwoods retreat!
Lisa G: Yes, Rick and Jerry Marotta are brothers. The family was in Cleveland, but moved to Westchester Co. in New York early on...

MC-sorry to hear about your friend. Seems like he was well-loved. Nice to see you post here.
Cyn--canÆt help letting kiddies breathe on me. I fear itÆs one of the hazards of my job. Nice to have insurance and sick days to deal with it. Hope you are having a fandango meringuo time at the SPA!!!! Enjoy it, dear lady.
Hi, Bill! Hmm...while the offer from FLDI does seem appetizing, I thought Kendall Park had City Music, Co. and not much else. Rte. 27? We gots a Rte. 27 down here in Edison. How far up does that go?
YGK-Horror stories? Well a good friend of mine used to talk about a gig he played where a lady danced with a dog. No alcohol was involved. DaddyG has a dooser of a story about a ôBird Mitzvahö he once played. Perhaps we can get him to post it. Me? I try to block out any situations IÆve been involved in that would force me to change my name.
Dano-hey! Sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope you can soon leave this condition ôbehind.ö
Original Lester-Why not try leaping in on over to NJ and weÆll jam. IÆll put you up. Kindred spirit here.
Gina and Clas-glad to hear about your visit. IÆm looking forward to hearing the contribution. I have nothing at the moment. CanÆt get the muse.
Gina, nice leer-icks and thanx for awakening a sleeping parodic worm. Werrrmmmmmmeee-keep æem coming--you iz back.
Howard!!!!! The guitarist in my band is leaving. Wanna come over to the states and play? ;)
Does anyone know if Rick Marotta and Jerry Marotta are related? Jerry Marotta produced Peter GabrielÆs öSo,ö and will be producing DaddyGÆs sister next fall. HeÆs also a drummer. Give me the skinny, people, if you got it.
Re: W1PÆs band on the TM2002
This is tough issue. If we start to deny
music being sent in to the compilation, we may not have enough music to
warrant a CD. While I have been drawing blank on a contribution, myself, I
canÆt help but wonder if we donÆt allow the Floyd tribute on, the CD will
never come to be. It needs as many tracks as we can get.
On the other hand,
I think the real issue here is what exactly is the compilation? The rules have
been changed here concerning the allowance of non-original DanFan music what
with the invitation of covers. Now what was the intent of the whole
compilation to begin with? As a latecomer to the scene, I have no idea what
the original intent was. Nor do I know what the purpose of the CD is now that
the rules have changed. Could someone who has the authority to do so speak up
on the issue?
If the intent of the compilation is to showcase the original
music of the DanFans on the GB or remain in tribute to the SD by offering SD
covers, then I say no to the Floyd song.
If it is a compilation by members
of the DanFan base, then I say allow the Floyd song, although not every member
of W1P may have ôsworn their oath of loyal Fandom to SD,ö and the writers of
the song may or may not be DanFans themselves. The answer, like the old joke
about what an old lady tastes like, depends.
Finally-Everybody!
To flame or not flame. Grow up already and stop
taking yourselves so seriously. Personal attacks whether on a profession,
political affiliation, ôtalentö or contributions, or how much money people
make, do not matter in the scheme of things. You all put your pants on one leg
at a time. The first graders I teach exhibit more social skills than most
people, it seems. Oh, BTW, sorry for the flaming in this post. Just a bit of
fun.
Any predictions for the Oscars?
Best Actor: Crowe had it locked up before he attacked the British producer across the pond. Denzel Washington should win fittingly on a night where Sidney Poitier will be awarded for Lifetime Achievement...
Best Actress: Close one between Cissy Spacek and Haile Berry. The smart $ is on Spacek, but I'll go with Berry in an upset
Best Picture: A Beautiful Mind. Although the film took some liberties it's a great flick. Lord of the Rings is Worthy, but will not win due to the ET effect: a fantasy that's too big at the box office
Best Director: The Academy historically rarely splits up best director and picture, but they did recently I think. The Crowe-magnon and Opie effects will snatch it from Ron Howard, despite being well-liked for Jackson of The Fellowship of the Ring
Best Supporting Actor: Duh...Gandalf all the way.
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Connelly

okay, i really got to do some laundry
Been listening to Marvin Gaye's "Let's get it on" all evening. Good thing with the de-luxe/extended/remastered and the other tricks from the companies - you pick up them old one¦s again. Hearing "If I should die tonight" makes me chill... .

Gina: One last thing - Try Whistling This has Neil's only Dan-like cut: "Sinner." N. Finn's influences are generally more folk, classical, native music, and rock rather than jazz. McCartney AND Lennon are obviously big influences on his songwriting style. Most of Neil's tunes are more Paul, but Astro and Faster Than Light sound more like John...his lyrics are much more John than Paul, fortunately...
Dano, weed, whites and wine? A lot of people think of Little Feat as a Nawlins southern style boogie band. But they are from Los Angeles -- and not the kind who moved here. Anyway, I know ya'all are waiting with bated breath for a report on Eddie Money so here goes. I cringed some time ago on this GB when I admitted to liking Creed. I did and do still. Well, I have a similar admission to make -- I like a lot of Eddie Money. Get a Move On from the Americathon soundtrack, Life's for the Taking, Trinidad -- some of that stuff rocked just hard enough to attract my attention. Of course I can live without the "just like Ronnie says" BS (last night Eddie had his 13 year old daughter sing that part, I'm serious.) So the bottom line is this -- Eddie's band really rocks and Eddie has lost his fastball big time. Maybe he was under the weather last night but he was passable on a few cuts and couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag on others. I know that this report was a waste of bandwidth but at least it addresses music. Looks like things are shaping up for my wife's birthday on 4/12 in Dan Diego.
okidoki doc Mu :-)
G: The album with Wendy & Lisa is One Nil soon to be One All. Two of the wekest traccks have been exchange, 3 remixed and a change in the order of some of the songs...it's more of a "band" album
Try Whistling This is mostly Neil playing with some folks on drums (when it's not sequenced or a drum machine) I don't know. Mitchell Froom plays organ on a couple of tracks...a much different sounding album than One Niil...
...and Horse: and will you please elaborate what you mean with "pathetic little country".
That horse with no name: "UN FUCKING BELIEVABLE" ? You must mean Fucking unbelievable?
Dano - Stackridge!!! "The man in the bowler hat" was/is THE album mid-70ies. Well in pair with Aja. And you fought the singer?! Wow!
Another brilliant quote from Fuckhead, I mean Clas
"show some respect" UN FUCKING BELIEVABLE!
"Jay Graydon will never show up as long as" YOU ARE HERE CLAS YOU FUCKHEAD
Show the GB some respect and crawl back to your pathetic little country.
FEED THE CLAS UNTIL HE CHOKES ON HIS OWN REGURGITATED BILE!
good sunny day on the euro-continent ..
Schwinn, the TM2002 will be on
its way to you :-)
Clas, many thanks to you and your offspring, the "hey
hey" Lundkvist guyz :-)
doc Mu, when you wrote about Neil Finn here i listened to it in the store, also because i'm always interested in the whereabouts of Wendy & Lisa .. must say it isn't an album you take in the first time, needs more time to get it, yes i agree .. didn't buy it then, had to make a choice and i felt it better to save for a later period .. so i will certainly welcome Neil Finn in my musical household :-)
This world we live in is sometimes too wild to get ..

Lowell was about to have a gig, he stayed at a hotel. He complained for his wife having chest-pains. Later they found him dead on his room. Also found some coke.
The very same death as Porcaro and many many others.
As said in the movie "Blow"; -everybody did it.
Listen to Jackson Brownes tribute "Song for missing persons (a song so wild and blue)".
I saw little feat with my Spring Chickens, Lisa and Sunny Sam, back down in New Orleans. Great stuff.

Steeve baby,I will go and see any cover band for free , and as its our own Mr Sticks thats a big bonus , have a dooser of a night aand dont get the poor boy to muellered??
Duncan , just off to Ladbrokes for a tenner on the Toon to win 2-1 at 9/1 if that comes up the beers will be on me tonight??First time out on weekend for nearly a month so going for it big time geezer.
StAl ,WIP, just coincidence guys, but a friend of mine was playing Willin" by Little Feat last night havin a spliff and for the life of us cant remember how Lowell passed away . Can you clue me in ??
YGK , Now this actually happened . In the mid seventies myself two brothers
and three cousins went to see a band called Stackridge play locally . They
were on for about 1/2 hour and one of the guys shouted get on with it , and
the base player in the band took exception to this and shouted if you can do
better get your arse up here , low and behold my cousin jumps up on stage and
started fighting with the guitarist , then all frickin pandemonium set in and
we are all up there about 10/15 of us all scrapping with the band , police
came, people going basarak ,and as i knew the guy who was organizing the gig i
was huckled in the back of the van with him . He says Dan whats happening with
your mad Scots mates, to which i had to give help to and all the fighting with
the band , so i said they all started it and next thing i knew the singer in
the band who was in the police van was trying to belt me one ?? So my claim to
fame all over town to this day was fighting with the lead singer of
Stackridge.
To this day we all have a laugh about it and i still see all
the other people who joined in to help us fight the band , and we can all have
a crack about it.
Stackridge lasted a while and even had a top ten hit over here , but they never again messed with the Scots??
co-worker again?
Ha!
I know you haven't feel well lately Malcolm, but don't take it out on me, okay?
C
Clas since you love negative attention so much why don't you fucking die?
Gina - what did Denny Diaz say? -No fart jokes of any kind.
Show some respect. If we keep on mentioning heroin and farts, Jay Graydon will NEVER, and I say NEVER, show up here. Neither will that other guy.
---
Original Lester - I can relate to that, absolutely, "...so many chords" says the guitarplayers who use to play E7-blues-songs, and the jazzmusicians are so used to their carbon-paper-harmonies/scales.
Keep on searching though. And Bakersfield? Becker is singing of your town, is it still raining cat and dogs?

Gina: I can tell you like a challenging album. I heartily encourage you to try Neil Finn's first solo album "Try Whistling This" from 1998. I've listened to it on and off for 4 years. Tonight while scrolling throu a vast Foundation site, I finally "got it." Quite a departure from the more straight ahead Crowded House days, though Together Alone experimented some with native New Zealand Maori rhythms. His new one on import "One Nil", soon to be in the States "One All" is less exerimental by excllent pop that resembles his Live recordings more. Anyway, Try Whitsling This is Finn's 11 ToW in a hypermelodic sense, expect the tunes permeate slowly, almost an osmosis...Ut;s the second half that's particularly sneaky. Loose Tongue, Truth, Astro, Dream Date, Faster Than Light, and Addicted are a block of intricate that contrast with the more thunderous and hooky first half
Don't confuse tongue-in-cheek humor with outright flaming. They are not
related.
Shaun Murphy sings some vocals, but Paul Barrere (ex. "Eula" on Chinese Work Songs - their last one) still sings lead on other vocals. Occasionally, Sam Clayton or Bill Payne will take over the mike. Shaun took over the slot once filled by Craig Fuller (from Pure Prarie League - ex. "Amy") when Little Feat reunited. Fuller, I guess, had trouble living in the shadow of the late Lowell George, and who wouldn't...
Thank God I dont have to pay to see Eddie Money -- they let us in for the last 1/2 hour to distribute flyers. We're going for the whole Little Feat show (though its a female vocalist now as you probably know)
Wormy et B: Eh dear, it's sad that some of the best of the parody parade were left on the Amen. I'm getting positively misty eyed, here.

DEBUT ALBUM FROM KINKY IN-STORES MARCH 26 from Nettwerk Records:
"The debut from Kinky is not so much about sex as it is about the group's hometown of Monterrey, Mexico, the border region where club music, hip-hop and Latin overlap. Call it space music for the Spanglish Age. But despite the band's electronic trappings...Kinky has a visceral, funky feel to it...whether they dabble in deconstructed samba, DJ Shadow-like bass 'n' break beats or norteno-accordion-cum-Chic-disco-guitar licks, Kinky are as feverishly danceable as a night in Ibiza." - Rolling Stone (3 1/2 stars)

W1P: Eddie Money? You're kidding, right? Are you paying to see him, or is his manager paying you?
Now Little Feat is a whole nother story.

"Cover your front teeth and suck on my pole..."
Seriously, though, I am having a hell of a time with my own personal
musical angst. I have written some songs over the past few years, some of
which I think are worthy of recording and/ or performing. Problem being that
Don and Walt have influenced me to make songs with chord progressions that few
folks can handle. (I'm sure several GB musicians can relate). Rock musicians
don't have the chops, and jazz musicians usually just want to play jazz.
Basically, I fall somewhere in between there, thus I am a man without a
category. If anything, I just want to find someone who takes a similar
interest in my stuff, and maybe can write in a similar vein. I am certainly
not trying to recreate Steely Dan, because that will never, ever be achieved
by anyone, nor should it. But I find myself at 31 with decent guitar playing
and songwriting ability, even passable as a singer, not wanting to just hook
up with any band for the sake of playing.
I suppose a kindred spirit is a
bit much to ask for, especially living in Bakersfield, CA. But I'll keep
plugging away, writing, and recording crappy demos on my 4-track until
something interesting comes along.
Listening to Shuggie Otis's Inspiration Information right now- money.

G: I like it the parody, not the fish...The most amusing paragraph was where the staffers at Tuoro College were impressed with the smell of hydroponic meat sauteÄd in sauce of olive oil, garlic, lemon and pepper, but refused to taste it!!! Next time, they should try Northwest Salmon instead of Goldfish!!!
