Message: Robert Fisk: The monster of Baghdad is now the hero of Arabia.

This is now a nationalist war against the most obvious kind of imperial power

01 April 2003

So it's a "truly remarkable achievement'', is it? General Tommy Franks says so. Everything is going "according to plan'', according to the British. So it's an achievement that the British still have not "liberated" Basra. It is "according to plan" that the Iraqis should be able to launch a scud missile from the Faw peninsula û supposedly under "British control" for more than a week. It is an achievement, truly remarkable of course, that the Americans lose an Apache helicopter to the gun of an Iraqi peasant, spend four days trying to cross the river bridges at Nasiriyah and are then confronted by their first suicide bomber at Najaf.

One half of the entire Anglo-American force û still called 'the coalition' by journalists who like to pretend it includes 35 armies rather than two and a bit (the "bit" being the Australian special forces) û is now guarding and running the supply line through the desert. And Baghdad is bombed but not besieged.

The military "plan" is so secret, according to General Franks, that very few people have seen it all or understand it. But his plan he says, is "highly flexible''; it would have to be, to sustain the chaos of the past 12 days, and, of course, we hold the moral high ground. The Americans bomb a passenger bus close to the Syrian border and don't even apologise. An Iraqi soldier kills himself attacking US marines and it is an act of "terrorism''. And now Secretary of State Colin Powell announces û to the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee, the largest Israeli lobby group in the US who of course support this illegal war û that Syria and Iran are "supporting terror groups'' and will have to "face the consequences''.

So what's the plan? Are we going to forget Baghdad for a few months and wheel our young soldiers west to surround Damascus? Where, for heaven's sake, is all this going? We were going to "liberate" Iraq. But the war could be "long and difficult'', Bush now tells us û he didn't tell us that before, did he? û and, according to Tony Blair, this is "only the beginning.'' Really?

Strange, isn't it, how all that fuss about chemical and biological warfare has been forgotten. The "secret" weapons, the gas masks, the anti-anthrax injections, the pills and chemical suits have been erased from the story û because bullets and rocket-propelled grenades are now the real danger to British and American forces in Iraq. Even the "siege of Baghdad" û a city that is 30 miles wide and might need a quarter of a million men to surround it û is fading from the diary.

Sitting in Baghdad, listening to the God-awful propaganda rhetoric of the Iraqis but watching the often promiscuous American and British air attacks, I have a suspicion that what's gone wrong has nothing to do with plans. Indeed, I suspect there is no real overall plan. Because I rather think that this war's foundations were based not on military planning but on ideology.

Long ago, as we know, the right wing pro-Israeli lobbyists around Bush planned the overthrow of Saddam. This would destroy the most powerful Arab state in the Middle East û Israel's chief of staff, Shoal Mofaz, demanded that the war should start even earlier û and allow the map of the region to be changed forever. Powell stated just this a month ago. False intelligence information was mixed up with the desires of the corrupt and infiltrated Iraqi opposition.

Fantasies and illusions were given credibility by a kind of superpower moral overdrive. Any kind of mendacity could be used to fuel this ideological project û 11 September (oddly unmentioned now), links between Saddam and Osama bin Laden (unproven), weapons of mass destruction (hitherto unfound), human rights abuses (at which we originally connived when Saddam was our friend) and, finally, the most heroic project of all û the "liberation" of the people of Iraq.

Oil was not mentioned, although it is the dominating factor in this illegitimate conflict û no wonder General Franks admitted that his first concern, prior to the war, was the "protection'' of the southern Iraqi oil fields. So it was to be "liberation" and "democracy". How boldly we crossed the border. With what lordly aims we invaded Iraq.

Few Iraqis doubt û even the ministers in Baghdad speak about this û that the Americans could, ultimately, occupy the country. They have the force and they have the weapons to smash their way into every city and rule the land by martial law. But can they make Iraqis submit to that rule? Unless the masses rise up as Bush and Blair hope, this is now a nationalist war against the most obvious kind of imperial power. Without Iraqi support, how can General Franks run a military dictatorship or find Iraqis willing to serve him or run the oilfields? The Americans can win the war. But if their project fails they will have lost.

Yet there is one achievement we should note. The ghastly Saddam, the most revolting dictator in the Arab world, who does indeed use heinous torture and has indeed used gas, is now leading a country that is fighting the world's only superpower and that has done so for almost two weeks without surrendering. Yes, General Tommy Franks has accomplished one "truly remarkable achievement''. He has turned the monster of Baghdad into the hero of the Arab world and allowed Iraqis to teach every opponent of America how to fight their enemy.

I have planted them for people who have passed on, in their memory, or for significant dates in people's lives, etc. Planted a rose last week called Perfect Moment. NEW YORK -- Federal investigators have arrested an enigmatic Wall Street wiz on insider-trading charges -- and incredibly, he claims to be a time-traveler from the year 2256!

Sources at the Security and Exchange Commission confirm that 44-year-old Andrew Carlssin offered the bizarre explanation for his uncanny success in the stock market after being led off in handcuffs on January 28.

"We don't believe this guy's story -- he's either a lunatic or a pathological liar," says an SEC insider.

"But the fact is, with an initial investment of only $800, in two weeks' time he had a portfolio valued at over $350 million. Every trade he made capitalized on unexpected business developments, which simply can't be pure luck.

"The only way he could pull it off is with illegal inside information. He's going to sit in a jail cell on Rikers Island until he agrees to give up his sources."

The past year of nose-diving stock prices has left most investors crying in their beer. So when Carlssin made a flurry of 126 high-risk trades and came out the winner every time, it raised the eyebrows of Wall Street watchdogs.

"If a company's stock rose due to a merger or technological breakthrough that was supposed to be secret, Mr. Carlssin somehow knew about it in advance," says the SEC source close to the hush-hush, ongoing investigation.

When investigators hauled Carlssin in for questioning, they got more than they bargained for: A mind-boggling four-hour confession.

Carlssin declared that he had traveled back in time from over 200 years in the future, when it is common knowledge that our era experienced one of the worst stock plunges in history. Yet anyone armed with knowledge of the handful of stocks destined to go through the roof could make a fortune.

"It was just too tempting to resist," Carlssin allegedly said in his videotaped confession. "I had planned to make it look natural, you know, lose a little here and there so it doesn't look too perfect. But I just got caught in the moment."

In a bid for leniency, Carlssin has reportedly offered to divulge "historical facts" such as the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden and a cure for AIDS.

All he wants is to be allowed to return to the future in his "time craft."

However, he refuses to reveal the location of the machine or discuss how it works, supposedly out of fear the technology could "fall into the wrong hands."

Officials are quite confident the "time-traveler's" claims are bogus. Yet the SEC source admits, "No one can find any record of any Andrew Carlssin existing anywhere before December 2002."

Weekly World News will continue to follow this story as it unfolds. Keep watching for further developments.

Message: re: the jokes about France. While I was booking a hotel in Paris I came across a note from the patron directed to his US-visitors (probably regulars as most of his customers are). I know him and he speaks directly from his heart (a big one!):

"An Open Letter to Our American Friends

Dear American Friends,
These last few months, politicians and the mass media on both sides of the Atlantic have been bashing us with two versions of the same story: Frenchies are arrogant traitors poking America in the eye! Americans are a bunch of war-happy loonies looking for world domination!
Baloney.
Folks, let's put the show on hold, and think together for a minute: who is holding the microphone for dear life, and pounding the message with a tremendous whack?
Not you, not us. Not the little people. But journalists and politicians.
Politicians will always put their own interests before yours - remember 'Follow the money trail' - and journalists love the sound of their own voices, and a good controversy - whether rooted in fact, or totally fabricated.
The truth is we, French people, like American folks. Beyond our pride of being French, we greatly admire the American people. We always have.
We know that we owe your parents and grandparents a great deal of gratitude. They paid the price of war with their lives on our beaches, and on our land. We are deep in their debt, and our streets will long carry the names of American generals.
But our admiration goes way beyond, extending to your entire culture.
We love your music - blues, jazz, musicals, rock, hip-hop, what-have-you. New Orleans' legend Sidney Bechet was our hero when he was still little known in America. Louis Armstrong is arguably the best-known black musician in France. Jessye Norman, one of your greatest opera singers, sells out concert halls when she graces us with her presence. And Elvis still reigns as king in the heart of all those who listened to him in the fifties and sixties.
We love your cars and motorcycles. Ask about Cadillac and Harley-Davidson around here, and you will get an instant smile.
We admire your movies, as witness box office successes such as Saving Private Ryan, Back to The Future, Casablanca, and Unforgiven in France. And in our minds, John Wayne and Gary Cooper are still true heroes.
Our teenagers adopt your casual wear, just as their parents fell for Levi's jeans.
We also smoke more Marlboro, Philip Morris, and Camel cigarettes than you do, guys!
Cheeseburgers and Coke did not originate in France. Yet, judging by sales of sodas and fast food here, we are addicted to them. So much for the journalistic myth of snooty Frenchies only eating French cuisine.
And English is still the first of our second languages.
The truth of the matter is, we simply adopt a lot of America's goods and customs.
And another truth is we like to receive you folks amongst us.
Over the years, we took notice of your commendable efforts to speak French. Yes, some of us won't tell you, but we generally appreciate your efforts to address us in our language. We also try to better our English skills (please don't laugh at our accent).
We appreciate your polite, non-intrusive behavior when you come to visit. We cannot say that all of us Frenchies behave as well when we visit you. We gotta try harder.
All of us who have travelled abroad know that the cultural differences which exist between Americans and Frenchies can be resolved with a smile and a good word. There cannot be any lasting misunderstanding between two peoples of goodwill.
You are very welcome in our country. We have many good things to offer, we hope some of them appeal to your hearts and interests.
You are welcome in France. Don't listen to tall tales to the contrary. We the people are not our 'governing elites'. You folks are not your government or the press.
Let's remain friends."

Kind of cute I think (besides he want's to stay in business). I like the paragraph about smoking best!

Turns out Geo. W. et al made the exact same stupid country club Republican mistake that his ilk did last time. My father's that kind of guy. Never admits to mistakes, in the mistaken impression that if he doesn't, he won't be letting reality "push him around."

They ASSUMED that resistance would just crumble, because after all, S Hussein is a bad guy. Who supports a bad guy? They made that mistake in '91. Now that it didn't go as planned, their plans are in disarray. Block-by-block fighting through the streets of Baghdad will alienate all the Middle East, right? But "we" are stuck.

On the bright side, much more data re Gulf War syndrome will be pouring (trickling) in owing to well fires and chemical attacks, or exposures from seizures of weapons strongholds, so eventually someone may have the info. needed to figure something out re this nightmare medical thing of mine, which is very much related. I don't know what there is to say about the war. Clearly information that poured in regarding Feyadeen and Republican Guard along withn Al Qaeda shooting Iraqi citizens protesting or fleeing, dressing up in American uniforms and slaughtering Shiites in the South, terrorist tactics, setting fire to oil wells, recruitment of children for battle, holding children and women hostage, blatant use of human shields, chemical warfare factories, gas masks, atropine, execution and torture of British and America POWs, in contrast with our humanitarian efforts point to this effort as a necessary evil I'm afraid.

I'm still concerned with Rumsfeld's plan a bit - we have only one infantry division (4rd) while the 4th is just getting into Kuwait after stalled off the shores of Turkey. The 1st is now leaving Fort Hood here in Texas. We have just 70% of the forces we had in Gulf War I and certainly the Airborne 101st shouldn't be guarding the flank. Saddam has proven us right in that they are a terroris - industrial complex and the biggest exporter of terrorism - but have we prepared with that in mind? I hope so and that our troops are protected and there is a resolution soon!!...having said that armchair quarterbacking is too easy - in relative terms things have been remarkably successful. As a marker the only victory we won in our first 6-9 months in WWII was at Midway...

Finally, I thought I might share an actual e-mail from the front. This is real (no StAl, there is no URL) - not something going around the internet - until now I guess!...can't reveal name or source (which is unimpeachable)... An interesting, colorful and very honest view. A few terms explained (the army has loads of ACRONYMS): HMMT: Big truck/tanker; DIVARTY: Division Artillery; AK-47: Russian made M-16 rifle equivalent (kind of); "the update": daily morning and evening update given to the commander by his staff or from a jr commander to a sr commander; MRE - packaged meal they eat

"Things are going pretty well. We just gotten to a bit of a lull in the
battle, and had to hook up the Internet to request some repair parts.
Tell everyone not to listen to the news that says everything is going to
shit. I have a sneaking suspicion that that impression is not being
given accidentally. Probably shouldn't say more. Let's just say it's not
a bad thing if the Iraqis think we're on our ass. We have only had 1
enemy-caused KIA in the Third Infantry Division. At this point in the
gulf war (supposedly a smashing success) the US had more than 150. A
sniper got a lucky shot at a poor tank driver during a refuel just about
5KM away from us. He had just stuck his head out, and he had his helmet
and his vest on, but the guy got him in the neck from about 800 meters.
Rumor is the other guys in the unit found the guy and beat him to death,
literally. But that's just a rumor, and Army rumors have a way of
getting colorful. I have no idea what actually happened.

So far, everything is going according to plan. Really, there
hasn't been anything all that interesting as far as Iraqi surprises. The
Saddam Fedayeen are pussies, and we're kicking their collective ass.
These are the dedicated Ba'ath party members in each of these little
towns that will be killed by their neighbors as soon as Hussein is
overthrown, so they have nothing to lose in fighting to the death to
maintain the regime. A lot of the POW's that we've taken have said that
these Saddam Fedayeen guys have come to the regular army units that
wanted to capitulate and told them that they would kill their children
and rape their wives if they surrendered. This should give you a general
impression about the situation over here. Every night during the update
there's a phrase something like "we killed approximately 150 dismounts..."
tossed in innocuously with a bunch of maintenance and supply data that
the Brigade Commanders brief to the Division Commander over the tactical
satellite radio. We are invading a country that has had 12 years to
prepare, has prepared defensive positions, and knows the terrain,
people, and their own capabilities. I know we've killed more than 500 in
the past week or so, only the guys that actively confronted us and so
far they've gotten 1 guy on a lucky shot. You tell me how you think
we're doing. From what it sounds like, the press is playing our
"setbacks" up way too much. It's so funny. Everyone expects all modern
military combat to be over in three days or so. This isn't Grenada or
Panama and this isn't Desert Storm. We are invading a country that
doesn't want us to be here with little to no cooperation from allies and
neighbors. We have a long way to drive. Just getting there is going to
take a while. Speaking of which, the real danger over here is driving.
We've had quite a few people killed in accidents. It was the same way
during the gulf war. Driving is a lot more dangerous than combat. There
have been times where I've been driving at night with no lights, wearing
NODs, in conditions so dusty that I couldn't see the IR tail lights of
the vehicle three feet in front of me. There are vehicles turned over on
either side of the road, which has steep drop-offs on either side, every
few miles the whole way up here. I'm driving a high-back HMMWV, (humvee)
with a trailer and driving has been a bit hectic. I'm riding with my
sergeant major and a very good Private First Class. We have the ultimate
setup. In the back (this HMMWV has a large cargo area in the back) we
have set up a bed that allows you to lay flat and stretch out, so one of
us sleeps while another drives, and another rides shotgun (literally).
PFC Savannah is great, but is scared to drive in the dark, so I wear the
NODs (night optical devices), take Sergeant Major Prosper's 9mm Beretta,
load a round into the chamber put it on safe, and lay it on the dash
next to my steering wheel so I can shoot with my right hand while I
drive and all I have to do is flip it off of safe with my thumb and
squeeze off the first round double-action. I give my M16 to Sergeant
Major and he aims out the right window, locked and loaded, with the
weapons on safe while we drive. So far, we haven't had to fire a round
in anger. During our second night of driving, we were stopped with all
the lights off when we heard an explosion on the right, and saw tracers
go by. We all emptied out of the truck and got flat on the ground. We
were looking at the house next to us, and thought the rounds might have
come from there, and we saw people moving around inside. It was a little
tense. Sergeant Yi, one of our NCOs, saw someone moving in the doorway
with his NODs, and I saw it too. We had our weapons trained on the door,
as there had been a lot of ambushes along this road. They were crouching
down, and then we saw it was just a mother sweeping some dirt out of her
door. She brought her kids inside, and turned out the lights. It was
completely dark and we hadn't seen the kids. Later on, we found out that
the unit behind us in the convoy had been engaging enemy to our front
and right and we had seen their tracers go by on the right, and the
explosion had been them shooting their Mark-19 automatic grenade
launcher.

Morale is high. We have had a couple of injuries, but none
serious. Our First Sergeant got his HMMWV run over by a HMMT, a military
equivalent of a semi, and it was just destroyed. He went to the field
hospital for a couple of days of observation, and he's back now. We were
all worried about him, but he's okay. Yesterday, we found out one of the
Privates First Class, a little guy who looks like Webster, has this
really thick Georgia backwoods accent and is a real favorite around the
TOC lost his 2-month-old daughter to illness. He saw her once right
before he deployed. We're sending him back home on emergency leave, but
that's just about the worst thing that's happened since we've been here,
as far as the DIVARTY is concerned. His name is PFC Lyman and you all
can pray for him and his wife.

The next few nights of driving were similar, with mortar
fires and small skirmishes happening around us, but not so close that we
were ever in real danger. You can see the tracers and the mortar fire
flying through the air with your NODs and every now and then you can
hear the Apache attack helicopters or A-10s fly over, and they give you
a warm fuzzy feeling. Our convoy stopped just outside of the fight that
was going on the first day outside of Al Nasiriyah, and we watched the
Apaches and A10s strafe and bomb the road about 4 miles ahead where the
fight was going on.

So far, we haven't seen any direct action. We're hoping to
keep it that way, but things could get interesting in the upcoming
weeks. So far we've fought the reluctant benchwarmers from the Iraqi JV
team, and some very motivated amateurs, but we're about to take on the
Medina Division, which is Iraq's professional army. These guys are well
trained and have good equipment, so it will be a different fight. We
will still massacre them, don't get me wrong, but it will be a different
kind of battle. It will be much more textbook-grade conventional warfare
rather than the "Marne 500" as we are currently referring to it. The
Marne 500 is like the Indy 500, only longer, with no lights, a whole lot
of dust, and people trying to kill you with AK-47s and RPGs. (Rocket
Propelled Grenades) (think Blackhawk Down).

I have respect for the Iraqis. There is, I think, an
increasing realization that a bunch of guys a lot like us are sitting in
headquarters a lot like ours trying to figure out how to beat us with a
lot fewer guys and a lot older equipment. They feel like they are
protecting their country from an invader (and they are) and are doing
their best to mount a decent defense in depth. They're doing what they
can with limited resources and desperate tactics. They're actually
making a go of it, and trying to go down with a fight rather than
rolling over, and as a professional soldier, you at least have to
respect that. From what we've seen of the Medina, they're professionals,
and don't act like the untrained kids with guns that we've seen so far.
They're not rushing into things and are trying to set themselves up as
well as they can. As those of us who have played WarCraft have seen,
you're always better off in the defense when you have the option. It's
too bad we're going to have to send them through the Air Force blender
on Puree'. War is never pleasant, and rarely makes sense as we now see.

At any rate, things are going well. The Third Infantry
Division Artillery is delivering accurate, responsive fires, exactly
like the Iraqis can't, and is a big part of why we're winning. For the
uninitiated, artillery basically means shooting a big (100 pound) round
about 20-30 Kilometers to a ten digit map grid point with about 1 meter
accuracy. This means that our guys who are out front can see the enemy,
not be anywhere near close enough to engage them, but just give us a
call on the radio and we can blow them to hell without them ever knowing
what happened or, in some cases, our friendly forces even giving away
their position. We can do this in any kind of weather (unlike the Air
Force) and about 180 seconds after the original radio call comes in. The
Iraqis actually have better guns and more guns than we do. You know
that Crusader thing that Congress cut? Yeah. Most people don't know that
while the USA has the world's best military, we probably have the
world's third or fourth best artillery, behind the Brits and South
Africa. The Crusader system that congress cut would have put us back on
top again, but no, Don Rumsfeld thinks the Artillery is the past. Well,
it's saved a lot of American lives out here in this war. The Iraqis have
the South African G5, one of the best artillery pieces currently in
production in the world. They don't have that many, but the thing that
really kills them is the fact that they can't adjust fires on a target
like we can. They don't have the training and the communication to pull
it off. Instead, they kind of shoot in our general direction or at
preplanned targets on roads or other key terrain, and so far, despite
all the thousands of rounds of indirect fire (as artillery is referred
to in military jargon) the only damage they've managed to accomplish in
3ID is some shrapnel in the ass of some unlucky soldier a couple of
Battalions Over. Thanks for playing, but no teddy bear. Sorry. What's
even worse is that we have these radars that tell us exactly where they
are when they shoot. We get the general impression that these poorly
trained regular army guys in the south didn't know about this. As soon
as they shoot, we shoot back with MLRS, which is a multiple - bomblet
rocket that destroys everything in about one square kilometer.
Everything. I think the word has gotten out because they don't shoot
artillery much any more.

Well, we're all fine here. Just dirty. Very dirty. I haven't
taken a shower since the war started. Food consists of MREs and bottled
water, which is a little bland, but MREs have gotten a lot better in the
past few years, and like I've always said, the taste quality of the MRE
is directly proportional to how hungry and tired you are. We're moving
too fast for mail, but once things slow down I'll get everything so keep
sending stuff. I'll probably get a huge stack when we finally stop.

Don't worry about me. Things are fine, and no one is
particularly worried or panicked or anything like that. Mostly we just
miss our families and the comforts of home. This just kind of feels like
a very long, very crappy day at work. A day at work that never, ever
ends. Ever. Other than that, it's great. The best and the worst of the
experience over here is the people. There are a few (very few) folks
here with whom I will probably be friends for life, and others that as I
said to CPT Carletta, the JAG officer "If they were on fire, I wouldn't
piss on them to put them out." Yee-ha. Love the Army.

Well, I'm signing off for now. Everybody keep the email
coming. Looks like Internet will come up intermittently from time to
time, so I should get it, and probably sooner than snail mail. Everyone
keep in touch."

Gaia is such a great song - the Hourglass album grows on me with each play even years after the release. While at first, it did not seem as organic as New Moon Shine (with Copperline), Hourglass's songs are more consistent and the production more intricate. The thing that defines New Moon Shine, Hourglass, and October Road is the professionalism, thoughtfulness, and creativity. The notion of Gaia or earth as a complete living, breathing, complex organism has been a nice way of merging science, art, and human purpose. JT achieves this in a most elegant fashion. Crystal clarity and a beautiful open soundscape on this song and throughout the album. At this point in his career, JT could just mail them in - but that's not been the case and Hourglass is deserving of the surprise Grammy it won...and I don't even like "folk" music...it's just all-American stuff...

Left me kinda wondering what work they did in that studio back "in the '60's," as DF said. Maybe 'You Got to Walk It...' or some Jay and the Americans stuff. But the article and talk of working with the same band for all the basics without a lot of overdubs has visions of something 'Countdown...'-esque dancing in my head...

But I know enough to toss out any expectations before I hit the *play* button...

I just feel so damn lucky that they're putting out another one. That first trip through a new Steey Dan album is always full of mystery and surprise, never quite being able to predict how a phrase or chord progression will resolve. And jeez... Happens so, when i logged in to check the GB i was listening to James Taylor's Hourglass ... the song Gaia just started, sending shivers as i read you reposted my post ... therefore the lyrics:

Gaia

The sky was light and the land all dark
The sun rose up over Central Park
I was walking home from work
GAIA
The petal sky and the rosy dawn
The world turning on the burning sun
Sacred wet green one we live on
GAIA
Run run run run said the automibile and we ran
Run for your life take to your heels
Foolish school of fish on wheels
GAIA
Turn away from your animal kind
Try to leave your body just to live in your mind
Leave your cold cruel mother earth behind
GAIA
As if you were your own creation
As if you were the chosen nation
And the world around you just a rude and
Dangerous invasion
GAIA
Someone's got to stop us now
Save us from us, GAIA
No one's gonna stop us now

We thought we ought to walk awhile
So we left that town in a single file
Up and up and up a mile after mile after mile

We reached the tree line and I dropped my pack
Sat down on my haunches and I looked back down
Over the mountain
Helpless and speechless and breathless
GAIA
Pray for the forest pray to the tree
Pray for the fish in de deep blue sea
Pray for yourself and for God's sake
Say one for me
Poor wretched unbeliever

Someone's got to stop us now
Save us from us, GAIA
No one's gonna stop us now

Gina's Post----------------------

Following the lead, Aja :-) You swirl, grrrl!
Dime-hopping and the vibes interluded a Banyan Tree Bow in Blue, but why not hop back in Yellow and have a blend, a Green Booky Woogie, eh?

Good morning, 8.14 eurotime.
The Tacoma drummer Guinness attempt stuck in my mind for quite some time, st. Al. Then tried to imagine the middle east deserts and the sounds of warfare, silence and destruction. Tried to imagine panic and young patriots on either side of this spectacle. Tried to imagine concerned relatives glued to the television, or what makes the enlisted tick, to be willing to give their lives and for whom ...
Tried to grasp the paradox and harsh conflicting morals in understanding the concept of freedom, the individual fighting for his country, or because he felt he had no choice but to join the army, it helps pay the bills and provide a secure future rather than see no other option because his social-economical background didn't grant him education and a chance to discover whether he has an american dream of his own ...

To battle for a corner of a cave, or to club down a rival for a woman, to participate in competitive notions for a glittering prize, to battle over who's next in line for the cashregister or to kill a mockingbird just because ...

This is World War III.
Fitting the ways of life anno 2003.
Fitting the contradicting ways of human nature and hidden agendas.
The lights are dimmed and the fireworks demand the ending of many beating hearts.
So when the 200 drummers beat their beats, may they call upon this Mother Earth and have her speak up in some way.
Time to give April's Fool Day a new meaning as well, btw.

Off to embrace life and turn to the vibes of music,
too many pearls out there turning against the world!

unexpectedly for very personal reasons. This is her third novel, If Wishes Were Horses, published by
St.Martin's Press. Her friends are banding together to attempt to accomplish through word of mouth what is
usually the result of the book tour... that is, get people to read the book! [after they pay for it. This is not
Abbie Hoffman shtick].

Her first novel, Burning Down the House, was published when her name was Merry McInerney.

Right. That McInerney, whose husband wrote Bright Lights Big City.

The following statement is a most carefully worded one: the book, Burning Down the House, is fictitious.
The protagonist of this book, which is fictitious, essentially inspires, cowrites and edits someone else's great
hip novel while the someone else lives the fast lane sort of lifestyle not unlike that of certain characters in
BLBC [which is also fiction]. The someone else turns around and takes full credit... only to dump the
protagonist later. Interesting story.

sorry. where was I?

Her name is now Merry Whiteford! She is now very happily married to my former bandmate and friend.

Please check out If Wishes Were Horses. If your local bookstore does not stock it, please ask them to order
it and while they're at it, a few copies for the shelf wouldn't hurt. If you enjoy the book, why not pop over
to Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com and give it a favorable review! This is more important than you
might estimate. Editors and publishers follow these; it helps them determine whether to up a print run or start
running advertisements. Of course, if you enjoy the book, tell your friends!

So, whats the name of this other tribute band that plays Janie and What a Shame? That sounds cool - where are you guys located?

How about West of Hollywood or Almost Gothic? I think those are awesome songs and somewhat underrated. Almost Gothic is my fav off the album... Anyone else a huge fan? Its just so sexy and smooth... (hint hint! Bob, Peg, are you hearing me? :) When are you guys gonna play the Catamaran again btw? Its been too long... )

Oh and one last ting - I got the Nightfly DVD Audio today and its great - The IGY is mixed SOOOO nice - I'm hearing parts of that song I didn't even know existed.... Not as nice as the Gaucho DTS but definately nice for any surround sound audiophile... I think Steely is the perfect way to showcase 5.1 music - there are so many differnt parts and sounds and each one gets the proper treatment in the 5.1 mixes. Really good stuff. Anyone else pick this up yet?

Okay, take care everyone - nice to be back and say 'Hi'. Lookin' forward to a very Steely 2003 indeed! Woohoo!!! :)

It's not like either Walter (Maui) or Donald (NYC or adjacent) are proximate to that north-of-San Luis Obispo locale ... I bet the whole thing gets retracted.

Aja - Pretzel Logic plays Cousin Dupree, Jack Of Speed, Janie Runaway, and What A Shame About Me from 2VN ... I've played all of the other tunes from the record solo ... something I don't do when gigging with the band.

If you are fairly close (or sufficiently motivated to drive) to Temecula ...

So, the first interview is up, for the album. They kind of fell into recording it in analog. Interesting.... Really has me getting excited.

I heard on the radio yesterday that the Fleetwood Mac ticket sales were postponed. The tour management didn't feel it was appropriate during a war situation. That might be what is going on with the Paso Robles gig for Steely Dan.

The tour information on Universal and Greek were announced yesterday and Steely Dan didn't turn up on either roster.

You are correct sir!
A "cat shake" is indeed a CAT shake! Below you will find one of my
favorite recipes. Enjoy!

Peach-Raspberry Cat Shake
*************************

1/2 cup frozen raspberries
1 cup frozen peaches
1 cup milk
1 cup frozen vanilla yogurt
1 frozen banana (peel banana before freezing)
1 medium cat of your choice (diced)

Whirl all ingredients together in blender until smooth.
Serve immediately.

*Note*
I find that the KitchenAid Model KSB5CR works extremely well when
making cat shakes. My old Hamilton Beach just didn't have the oomph
to do anything larger than a very small cat.

Also, if you were willing to slip me a few cats under the table we
might be able to overlook this little copyright infringment thing.
Between me and the chinese resturants, New York is currently in the
midst of a cat shortage.

Sincerely,
Alf

Message: excerpted from an interview broacast in 1990 on KPFA Berkeley:

Frank Zappa: (reponding to previous question) "How could the Arizona legislator create the Dildo Law? Remember, not only is the public intellectually impaired becuase they've gone through the American educational system, guess what: the guy sitting next to you at the desk in that bad school you went to - he's in the legislation business now. I mean, you have people in government who are intellectually unprepared to engage in any high-level human activity. These are basically used car salesmen that got a promotion. Or lawyers, which is worse.

So you say, 'How Can you do it?'. Take a look at who's doing it."

interviewer: "It's been a tricky year... what's the next year look like Frank?"

FZ: "Not much better."

intrvwr: "Why do you say that?"

FZ: "Because I don't think that there is any signal on the horizon that shows me that the American public is going to wake up and smell the coffee here. I think it's going to be, 'Oh look, isn't that weird? Look what they're doing in Florida. Oh that Dildo Law, that sure is strange. Oh ok...' You just consume it as entertainment. The news is consumed as entertainment. It doesn't motivate you. "

intrvwr: "When's the point going to come when people start rebelling?"

FZ: "In America? Not."

intrvwr: "Sounds pretty bleak."

FZ: "Well you asked my opinion - that's my opinion. I can't really see any kind of grass-roots rebellion of any discription in this country because it's too sedated."

intrvwr: "Do you think that's media rhetoric always saying that the next decade is going to be like the '60's and we're going to return to '60's values. What's the future for the '90's?"

FZ: "I'm not sure that the '60's values were all that terrific, I mean, they start to look pretty good compared to the '80's and '90's values. But um... I wouldn't say that the '60's were any kind of a golden age because there were a lot of stupid things that occured during the '60's.

I will say that it is my opinion that the condition we're in now is bordering on terminal, as far as the politcal and social health of the country is concerned."

intrvwr: "So we're just going to become a fascist state?"

FZ: "Unless we do something about it. That is what's at the end of the road. Facist state. We're talking about 'Romania II'. We're talking about having our own personal Ceausescu here. His name will be easier to pronounce of course. Probably be a one syllable word, like 'Bush', or 'Quayle', or something like that, but the result is the same: secret police spying on your phone calls! (knocks on table three times) 'How many dildos you got in there!?' That's what you got!"

intrvwr: "Frank, thanks for your insights."

FZ: "You're welcome."

Regarding James McMurty, I haven't heard his latest work. The radio station in town here seems to have forgotten he exists, which is a damn shame because he's another I'd lump into the "Great American Artists" category. And yes, I do have the album you mention. I especially love his raspy vocal delivery. Saw him live a few years back and it still ranks as one of my favorites small venue experiences.

Message:
St. Al - Great point(s) in post #2328; normally I have no expectations with bands/artists playing cover material, i.e. I don't expect them to match or copy any particular element of the original song. Sometimes when they keep things the same, it's still interesting (but generally not as good), and sometimes changing the arrangement and instrumentation completely is engaging (and sometimes disasterous). One good example would be Tori Amos' album 'Strange Little Girls,' on which she did a version of The Beatles' "Happiness Is A Warm Gun"; it was VERY different, and though I didn't particularly care for it, I admired her choice and willingness towards experimentation to achieve something else with the composition.

While the last sentence of my post did state "But then, who in the realm of music could top or even hope to compete with the immaculately played and produced original to start with?", I generally don't put ANY music in a competitive light wherein a band or artist has to "compete" with the original (as you noted), or simply manufacture a "recreation" for that matter (though Phil Collins' recreations of "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "You Can't Hurry Love" were good).

By the same token, there was nothing to intend what is frequently misconstrued as "hero worship" or idolization ( I don't worship anybody) with the above-referenced sentence; it was merely the indication that Steely Dan tend to deliver the best possible arrangement, instrumentation, and recording approach in regards to the rendering of the song(s), which is what they spend so much time meticulously doing; now if only more bands/artists would take more time and consideration with their work...

Cheers also to you for being able to disagree (with engaging discourse no less) without the use of insults, personal attacks, criticisms, and expletives (which some other little fuckers around here seem unable to do).

Randy. Boy do I disagree with your analysis of Wilco as it is my belief that Wilco is one of the last great uniquely American bands. However, attempting to sway your opinion on this is probably futile, so I wont even try.

Applying the Wilco formula to a Steely Dan song is rather dubious if your intention upon listening to a cover is to hear a thoughtful recreation of the original song, or, at the very least, a major nod toward the original artists intent as far as song structure and mood goes.

But when I listen to a cover I like to hear just the opposite. I like to hear another artist take the original work and mold it into something uniquely their own. Especially when the artist covering the song is an established artist with a strong body of original work (like Wilco). That's exactly what Wilco did to Any Major Dude. You may not like what they did and that's cool. But I wonder if people (not necessarily you) sometimes expect an artist covering a song to not deviate from the original artists intent -- and any attempt to do so is blasphemous?

Just a thought.

Steely-folk,

While the following should be prefaced with the simple fact that I rarely enjoy cover material in regards to studio efforts by any given artist (with the occasional exception), as well as the fact that I have generally attempted to avert being unnecessarily nasty or harsh when writing CD or concert reviews over the years, I thought special merit should be granted to the notably energy-depleted band Wilco for their typically listless, sodden cover version of Steely Dan's "Any Major Dude Will Tell You," which I had the disappointment of hearing for the first time this morning.

Rarely has a song as astutely arranged and composed as this been saddled with a recording that contains such leaden drumming, uninspired vocals, and generally unfocused and uninteresting playing; while aware of the prospect that the bands' intention may very well be to sound as if they are suffering from (a) poorly scheduled late night/early morning recording sessions, (b) perpetual exhaustion, (c) insomnia, (d) valium addiction, or (e) severe brain damage, I'd have to say that overall Wilco's version was wholly unmemorable (as with most of their original material for that matter, the approach to which seems to suffer from all of the above). But then, who in the realm of music could top or even hope to compete with the immaculately played and produced original to start with?

Like Randy, I like the different sides to his music and personality - the guitar player, the funny guy, the composer, the band leader, the guy who likes to make serious points by taking the piss out of certain politicians/religous extremists...

I also love the way the different elements are used against each other. For example on Civilisation Phaze III, there is some of the best music he's ever recorded. Not all easy listening, but stuff that needs time to be appreciated. Then, sandwiched between some of these blocks of great music are 30-second snippets of people talking about living in a piano and contemplating "dark water", "ponies" etc. Mad stuff, but it's a great way to cleanse the palate between tracks. Kind of a musical "amuse bouche".

Mock Turtle - you said you'd love to hear what he had to say about these times. Well, here's an interesting snippet:

http://207.212.72.141/zappa1.html (go down to "It's an Arab Problem!")

He was of course talking about the first Gulf War, but (surprise, surprise) almost all of what he says applies in exactly the same way right now!

Here's an excerpt:

"Well my feeling is that basically it's an Arab problem and should be settled by Arabs. I dont think that any time there is a problem any place in the world that the United States should suddenly jump up and send hundreds of thousands of soldiers over there to fix it. And I believe that when the US government says that we're sending soldiers there to fight for a principle they're being somewhat dishonest because the only thing they're really concerned about is the oil. They're not going there to protect democracy because Kuwait was not a democracy, and neither is Saudi Arabia. Both of these countries had very very strict regimes."

Have been away for a while but now I have decided to form my Spinal Tap tribute band - We have chosen an eclectic mix of old and new covers for our one and only show - Next weekend (Obviously there will only be one performance as the drummer will spontaneously combust at the end of the gig)

Set list so far includes

Stonehenge
Sex farm
Big bottom
Tonight I'm gonna rock you (tonight)
The majesty of rock
Lick my love pump
Trademark solos
Little sandwiches scene re-enactment
Flower people
Comfortably numb
Deacon Blues
East St Louis Toodle OOOOOOh
Baghdad shuffle
Fire in the hole
Bolero

Any other suggestion for our ever burgeoning set should be forwarded to St Allahs new web poll - "Set list for the worlds undoubted best tribute band".

I have grown a mullet especially for the occasion and had a series of special Marshall stacks commissioned that go up to 11 instead of ten - There will be backstage canapes but none with any spam or eco friendly tuna - Half time will see a series of readings from such luminaries as Anthony Beevor and Eric Hobsbawn especially for Dr Mu, who may or may not give us a pro war diatribe for half an hour.

Clas and that other guy he pretends to be will be presenting a Swedish Meatball cookery class and Buffalo Bill will be demonstrating advanced steer-roping techniques in the foyer before jumping the grand Canyon on a Suzuki 125. Dano may be drunk - Molly is welcome as we are all Scottish.

Other women will be welcome but only to lay the roadies and tidy up afterwards.

Dear Elizabeth,

The kid would be lucky to be born into a society where even the poor people are overweight, but unlucky to be in one without a national health plan or decent public education for most, where lethal injection and warfare are forms of entertainment, and where it costs an arm and a leg to go to college. This would not be the case if the kid were a Canuck or Swede or Limey or Frog or Kraut. So either go on practicing safe sex or emigrate.

Well, I know about a tribute band called Which One's Pink? and they're playing this Saturday 3/29 @ Platinum Live 11345 Ventura Blvd, Studio City and next Saturday 4/5 @ Club SoHO in Santa Barbara. There's an 80% chance that "A Fair Forgery of Pink Floyd" will finally be delivered this Friday and available for acquisition at the 3/29 show. This is a good way to pass the time while waiting for the debut performance of Action Jackson a tribute to Jackson Brown in Stockholm.

Yeah, he's an evil bastard, though the "since Stalin and Hitler" allegation is a stretch since he pretty much stays within his own borders, with two notable exceptions. I'm with Paige-there is a heck of a lot more going on behind this than the government lets on, and it's been going on for quite a long time. Is anyone naive enough to believe that we're charging into Iraq because people are suffering? People have suffered in South Africa, Rwanda, Cambodia, Afghanistan, ad nauseum, yet we looked the other way (including Hitler's regime, and Stalin was our ally). This is about politics, and our brave men and women, whose dedication to our country is unquestionable, are being sent as pawns for fictitious reasons. Anyone who has a loved one over there (and I do) should be livid.

Interesting to see the talk about Sir Frank (Zappa); while I do enjoy his more humor-oriented work, I was always partial to him as a composer and arranger, but even more so as a guitarist, of which he is considered (by this poster) as one of the greats. The Zappa albums I play the most have always been the three-CD set of 'Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar' (1981), 'Hot Rats' (1969), and 'Guitar' (1988). While always connecting with his politics and scatological humor, I'd rather just hear him play; for that alone he is truly missed-

Message: this is from "inthesetimes":

And then there was Michael Moore. He received a standing ovation when Bowling for Columbine was announced the winner of best documentary. The Chicago TribuneÆs Mark Caro reported that the pressroom also erupted in applause when it was announced that Moore had won.

Taking the stage, flanked by documentary filmmakers, Moore said:
IÆve invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us. They are here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time when we have fictitious election results that elect a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons, whether it is the fiction of duct tape or the fiction of orange alerts. We are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush. Shame on you. And any time that you have the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up.
John Horn of the Los Angeles Times reported that ôas MooreÆs speech reached its crescendoö Oscar producer Gil Cates and director Louis Horvitz, who were in the production truck, decided ôto cut him off. æMusic! Music!Æ Horvitz yelled. The orchestra quickly drowned out the rest of MooreÆs speech.ö And his microphone receded into the floor.

Most of the Hollywood audience smiled and applauded, but stagehands, who were close to the microphones, booed loudly, making it appear to a television listener that MooreÆs criticism of President Bush was not well received.

ôIt was so sweet backstage, you should have seen it. The Teamsters are helping Michael Moore into the trunk of his limo,ö quipped Steve Martin after a commercial break.

Backstage, Moore kept up his criticism. These remarks were well reported by the TribuneÆs Mark Caro and the Chicago Sun-Times Bill Zwecker, but most of the national media ignored them.
Reporter: Why did you do what you did?
Moore: IÆm an American.
Reporter: ThatÆs it?
Moore: Well thatÆs a lot. IÆm an American, and you donÆt leave your citizenship when you enter the doors of the Kodak Theatre. ... I donÆt stop being who I am when I come to this ceremony, and IÆm extremely grateful for this response.
Moore wanted it made clear that despite the loud boos from the stagehands, the Hollywood audience was behind him: ôDonÆt report that there was a split decision in the hall because five people booed,ö he said. ôI did not hear that. I saw the entire place stand up and applaud, applaud a film that talks about how we are manipulated by the fear thatÆs put forth by the White House and put forth by corporate America to create a culture of violence at home and abroad.ö

Noting that his book Stupid White Men is on the nonfiction bestseller list, Moore said, ôMy fingerÆs on the pulse of where I think the majority of Americans are at, and I think it would be irresponsible of me not to say what I felt. I donÆt think anyone who voted for me for this award thought theyÆd get a speech about agents and lawyers or the lawyers of agents.ö America, he said, is ônot divided ... the majority of Americans do not want to see their boys or girls killed in this war. The majority of people do not want to see our democracy hijacked by the squatter on federal land at 1600 Pennsylvania. I just happen to believe in one person, one vote, and you count all the votes.ö

Naturally, the national media, which have been busy as wartime cheerleaders, falsely reported that Moore was not well received. Kurt Loder of MTVÆs report on Michael MooreÆs ôwitless flip-outö was typical. Loder wrote: ôMoore brought all of the losing nominees in his category up onstage with him as a show of æsolidarity.Æ (Uh oh.) He then launched into a raving denunciation of æour fictitious president,Æ which ... okay, a lot of people feel this way. But MooreÆs spittle-flecked undulations were so over-the-top, that even the Oscar crowdùhis natural constituency, you might thinkùerupted in a storm of boos. This was totally unexpected.ö

Are Loder et al softening us up for another Hollywood blacklist? Boycott Hollywood already wants to dim the lights of 94 outspoken stars.

A statement released by the Screen Actors Guild, earlier in the month, put it this way: ôSome have recently suggested that well-known individuals who express æunacceptableÆ views should be punished by losing their right to work. This shocking development suggests that the lessons of history have, for some, fallen on deaf ears.ö

The furor over MooreÆs comments will no doubt continue. We should remember the words of Barbara Streisand, who said, ôI am glad that I live in a country that guarantees every citizen, including artists, the right to say and to sing what you believe.ö In a culture where the Dixie Chicks are being blacklisted, it was an affirmation that needed to be made.

Message: Dear <.....>...(By the way, thanks for using your real name, it shows great personal conviction)

I'm not sure that I stated that Bush should be (as you put it) sitting around and watching TV all day. I merely felt that he had an obligation to review the videos of what is happening to the people he has sent to war. As a former officer in the US Army, I would want to see what is happeneing to the men and women under my command. I would feel that it was my duty in that I am responsible for their well-being. I am "shocked and awed" that the "Commander and Chief" did not see these videos.

And as far as Clinton goes...
I did not elect a Pope. I elected someone to run this country with intelligence and sophistication.

Someone on the Right stated to me once that ...."Can't you see that President Clinton is a terrible role model for our children?" Let me tell you something...I wouldn't have ANY politician be a role model for my children. ALL politicians are corrupt and should never be looked upon as role models.

All things considered...the Monica situation seems pretty tame to what's going on now.

Finally...
There was a "Frontline" presentation a few days ago on PBS that everyone should see. It deals with the plan against Iraq long before Bush took office. The war with Iraq has little to do with terrorism. This was and is the "Bush Doctrine" which has been in the works for a very long time.

Thanks again "<.....>."

Contrast this with the televised scenes we saw yesterday on Al Jazeera of Iraqi soldiers firing wildly into the Tigris River and setting riverbank reeds on fire in a crazed attempt to murder a defenseless pilot they thought was there.

Some of the Iraqis he interviewed on camera "told me they would commit suicide if American bombing didn't start. They were willing to see their homes demolished to gain their freedom from Saddam's bloody tyranny. They convinced me that Saddam was a monster the likes of which the world had not seen since Stalin and Hitler. He and his sons are sick sadists.
