 re. the SNL shaft....
the reruns are only 60 mins while the program is 90.
some stuff is going to get cut no matter what.
if the musical guest is a relative unknown, chances are they won't make it to syndication.

what a shame about TV!
too bad the dan never played SNL... they probably woulda made the cut.

I'm sorry, but the pool guy did such a nice job fixing my liner, I mean, the liner, I just had to repay him...

I'll make it up to you though dearest, now where is my french maid costume - can I borrow it back please from that broker assistant you hired from Vassar?

A few excerpts:

"My bid is for a colossal 3d corporate logo to dominate the exhibit space, to awe and overwhelm the senses of the masses, to induce fibrillation intoáthe hearts of áthe terminally crusty and strike a blow for common cynicism and succinctness."ùPaul Shotan

"Of course, this studio-replica would have to be equipped with the Maggie-whatever speakers and Bosendorfer piano and all the other highfalutin' equipment they mention so fondly in liner notes and other memoirs (hell, maybe even the dreaded DBX machine that screwed up the 'Katie Lied' tapes should be in there)."ùMiz Ducky

"The Slightly Psychoanalyzed Fictional Steely Dan CollectionàWe have assembled the following fictional items that could be placed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, all taken from Steely Dan music. While doing so, we found a few (and are sure there are others) fascinating social deviancies and suchlike in the two men most likely responsible for the music of Steely Dan. Although we are highly talented fictional PhD.s, the following notes are based on pure bias and are not intended to cure or diagnose a disease, or to resolve any impending drug company disputes." ùFrank Felder, Ph.D. & Felicia Felder, Ph.D.

"When said Dan Fan stops spinning, the Dan Fan designated as "it" selects an illicit or dubious act as suggested by the particular album wedge that stops in front of her or him. Once the act is performed with or upon the Dan Fan strapped to the lazy Susanà"ù et.al.

Folks, goodbye for a week. I'm heading straight for Hurricane Alma with my daughter Aja and the rest of the family. I need to drown my sorrows since it appears that my best work has wound up on the "cutting room floor" if you know what I mean. Nothing a bottle of Cabo Wabo, a bucket of Coronas and a basket of fish tacos can't cure.

Bill - you ignoring my question about the Indy 500? Or are you just high on the post-accident adulation being lauded all over you? For fuck's sake.

|  Clas @ Lawyers In Love | Day: 31

 Bill - do you remember Art Garfunkel? In his famous song ôA heart in Long Islandö he captures the very greed in USA, and managed to put some poetry to the cruelness of your society as well, listen son;

ôA heart in Long Island, a rose on the street,
I write my song to that city heartbeat.
A heart in Long Island, a love in her eye, an open door and a friend for the night.
Long Island, you got money on your mind
and my words won't make a dime's worth a difference, so here's to you Long Island.
Long Island, now my bike is touching downö

Sometimes poetry beats reality, and this is one of those times kid.

The fleshed-out stolen studio stuff still makes me nauseous- not that I'd have it erased...
the other version I've heard is a demo duet [like Caves from Catalyst] which
sounds like an old upright with thumb tacks in the hammers in places if i recall-
I liked that one. maybe a few bars could have been included in the last grooves of
the lp just before the stylus hits the paper label... like the old James Gang record
that says "play me again"/scritch/play me again..."

OK, I don't quite get this.

I rewind the tape for SNL which was on E!. And on the top of the show they Don Pardo mentioned Libby Titus. Then was I fast foward through, no sign of her on stage except at the end of the show.

No performance. Apparently, thanks to the excessive commercials and the editiong on part of E!, the performance of Libby Titus was nowhere to be found.

I am embarrassed over this. I'm sorry about the whole thing. I have never even heard her perform and yet E! gives us the shaft. The show was funny, but no Libby. Yeesh! What's going on? If anyone knows anybody who works at E!, let me know.

Once again, I'm sorry for what was now a missed opportunity.

|  Aja..........another 3-day weekend | Day: 30

angel, ole, et al-I learned my 2nd A lines from Bob Tedde, who I believe has a bootleg written copy of the song. Anyway, the line Bob sings is "Cashed in the yellow jag" which goes right along with "I've got my life and laundry in a Gladstone bag", i.e. he's sold his car and has his entire life in one bag as he runs from one ex-lover to the next. What good is a car in New York, anyway?

I'm craving that song live now!

Bill- Make sure that the attorney that you hire has not only a college diploma, but...

Three letters of recommendation.
a 95 % success rating in terms of prosecution.
A refusal to take a pittance for a out of court settlement.
and...

A letter from his or her mother stating that your attorney is legit.

Oh, and make sure he or she isn't with the Mafia.

FINAL WARNING:
This is for anyone on the GB:

Libby Titus on SNL tonight at 7pm est, on the E! network.

If you miss it the first time, there will be a repeat at 1 am est.

If you miss it again, pull your hair and kick yourself, or preferably,
rip out a picture of Eminem and throw darts at it. ;)

Steveedan,

Thanks bro, sounds like good advice. So how is Gotham City
doing these days?

Clas,

Well Clas, you're a dumbass as usual...
Sure, I want to crash a six-week old motorcycle that cost me
13 grand, along with a set of $650 Vance & Hines headers that
I just installed two days prior, chipped my elbow and broke 3 ribs,
just to file a lawsuit against a state agency which probably has
all the laws heavily wieghted in it's favor. I'm sure that sounds
logical to you, coming from where your coming from, but unlike you
I don't need the money asshole! BITE ME!

|  WTF?! | Day: 30

re post 1955: Clas, what could this lawsuit possibly have to do with you? You are not a taxpayer here or possibly anywhere else. Bill will hire an attourney at his own expense, or the DOT of New York will pay for it in the end - both ways.

Am quite certain if you were in the same situation you would not hesitate to do the same, irregardless of who footed the bill.

Back off Bucko!

|  angel | Day: 30

Howard: Thanks for your interpretation on the mumbled instructions. It works for me. By the way, I spent my lunch hour yesterday checking out what is new on your site. :-)

Did check Broberg's site and yes, his lyric on 2nd Arrangement has smashed. I don't say it is correct, it is just what was there and what I ended up memorizing.

Better hold your seat if you can
cause it left your ass.... LOL

|  Steveedan | Day: 30

Clas - I saw the First Star Wars (Episode IV) right when it came out in my senior year of high school. With a little research and math you can learn of my approximate age (or slice me open like a tree and count my rings ...). One of my favorite movies is Orson Welles' Citizen Kane which came out 18 years before I was born - another hint for you.

Fingers Shotan and Co. - go and get 'em Squire! Man you guys have a lot of gigs. Keep up the good work.

Bill, I agree that you should get a few referrals from people you respect (who might have had a similar type of legal action) and interview them all, then decide on one and go get the idiots!

Howard - I haven't checked out the New Frontier stuff as thoroughly as I would like to but I will and get back to you here. Thanks for your opinions on the songs from the newer Gaucho out takes. I plan to lean Kulee Baba. It reminds me a little of Gershwin - at least the piano/rhodes/vocals demo does.

Great parody of the "If you got the bear, or the bear's got you" song.

Snakehips - great "Marital case study". I am getting a lot of milage out of that one.

Gotta go, the shop called ... my speeder is ready.

Bill: don't pick a p.i. attorney out of the yellow pages or based on who has the flashiest television ad. do pick a p.i. attorney based on the recommendations of friends and co-workers.

i'm wondering how much immunity the Department of Transportation in New York has from such suits since they are a public entity. i don't practise in New York so I personally have not a clue. that's a good first question for your attorney. or maybe second question after you find out his or her cut.

good luck!

|  Howard | Day: 30

angel - I saw the lyrics for 2nd arrangement and Kulee Baba on a site some time ago, probably the Broberg site, but noticed quite a few typos - that's to say I heard things quite differently to what was on the site.

I need to listen again to check, but I thought the Kulee Baba lines "dancing in the fold", "mix with the mob", "Hello broadway" and "so long for now" were the same on both versions? I could be wrong...

I reckon the opening line is "My nom de voyage is ..." After that, not sure - Mexuine? McSween? (as someone on the blue suggested)

The mumbling between lines is Donald asking the engineer to alter the vocal level, presumably for his headphone mix.

At 1:28 "turn my voice down"
at 2:12 "turn my voice down more"
at 2:59 "OK, bring my voice up now a little bit"

Howard

Motorcycle spun but I've done just fine
You just can't ride straight with a brain entwined

There's the bare asphalt or the sand

Better hold your seat if you can
'cause it left your ass
I'm afraid some voodoo spell
Brought on this living hell
All you got to bear
Sugabear got you

Ride this Kawasaki past the counter line
Paint me up with lube and I'll be just fine
Lawyer quick-fix flown for the cause up soon
Someone must be hinting at a newfound loot

|  angel | Day: 30

 Did I wake up a thread.... :-)

Ole: Yes, I heard Coach of 6, too, but after all the future sounding stuff in other lyrics, I was not sure if I should mention it.

Blaise and I have been working on that first line in Kulee. Let me rephrase that, Blaise has an idea and it makes more sense to me, then what is on Broberg's site. It goes something like "I'm on the voyage next week". With a mispronunciation of the word "voyage". Works better then My nom-de-vage is Mexuine.

Smashed, Cashed, Stashed. Hmmmm.... Funny how the all work and give a different interpretation to the line. I thought I got it from Broberg's site, but don't feel like checking right now. It takes forever to load at home. :-)

Howard: I noticed those changes too. I also show "We'll mix with the mob" instead of I'll mix with the mouth. "So long for now" instead of It's a long finale, "Hello Broadway" instead of hell on Broadway and (Blaise) "dancing in the fall" instead of dancing on the fold.

Can anyone catch what Donald is mumbling after some of the lines? The one at 1:28 in after beholding? On the one at 2:11 in after owe you one, I hear (something like) "that goes there" on the one after the chorus at 2:59 in, I hear "turn my voice UP high" Instructions for the recording from Donald, or instructions from the self absorbed big producer of "reality" TV? Fascinating stuff.

Snakehips: Kulee Baba reminds me so much of V's show. Jet setting all around the world for the next big third world thing. :-)

|  Bill | Day: 30

Well it looks like I'm going to have to file a lawsuit against
the New York State D.O.T. over this accident thing. Any suggestions
on how to pick a good personal injury attorney for this?

"Drive the coach at six for the county line,
Point me towards the tube and I'll be just fine..."

|  Howard | Day: 30

I hear "Stashed in the yellow Jag" too for the 2nd arrangement line.

One of the (many) interesting things that come to light from listening to those new Gaucho outtakes is the insight into the way the lyrics are reworked and honed.
You can compare "Blind That Day" with "Third World Man" - obviously a major reworking of the lyrics, yet there are many words and phrases that are kept. D+W have said before how they choose lyrics for their sound as well as their meaning. The phrases that made it from "Blind" To "Third World Man" ("Smokey Sunday", "your disguise", "(bright) eyes", "I saw the fireworks") give a nice view of this in action.

The changes made in Kulee Baba are interesting too:

"frightening finale" vs. "cruel primieval rite"
"a bash in Cameroon" vs. "a bash in New Orleans"
"telecast" vs. "broadcast"

I like "telecast" from the full band version, but "cruel primieval rite" and "a bash in New Orleans" from the piano demo somehow sound better than the alternatives that were used in the full band version. Maybe they wanted a place name that was further from home, so create a more exotic feel, and that's why they tried "Cameroon"...

Howard

|  lcpaul | Day: 30

Molly - Yeah, Little Feat were never the same after Lowell's demise. Still good though. Would love to see them live.

I got hold of The Blessing CD again recently. Some beautifully crafted songs off "Prince Of The Deep Water", especially "Hurricane Room".

Now, about this chat issue. Two things. I tried before but couldn't crack it for reasons I can't remember. But I will try again. The other issue is the time difference. If I'm not mistaken, you live in Kentucky, no? The home of KFC, yes? And I live in Cape Town, where the time now is precisely 12.30pm. Compare with time at the bottom of this post. Maybe there is a good crossover time. Let me know.

Now you mention you're a redhead. And I have reputation with redheads. Need I say more?:}

Bill - who won the Indy 500 on Sunday? There were two South Africans tipped to win! Tomas Scheckter and Adri Luyendijk. No coverage down South.

Over and out from the only GBer from the African continent.

Steeve, how old are you?

|  Great! | Day: 29

 Starwars. Beautiful.

|  I Saw it at the Maul | Day: 29

I went to see the new Star Wars film at a great theatre. Huge screen, super comfy seats, and lots of chocolate and Cokes ...

What an unbelievable movie! I have never seen anything as visually boffo as this film. I am still dizzy from it. I was overloaded (not loaded ... stopped that 17 months ago ... rats ...) from the effects of massive scene, after massive scene, after massive scene. I figure that the 20 year olds who worked the computer graphics on this movie aged 60 years. So at 24 they should be receiving pensions and preparing for burial.

Yes, what I suspected regarding Sen. Palpatine = the Evil Emperor = D. Sidious was supported in this movie, but it was not blatently explained or exposed. You still have to be observant (and with the massive digital density of the special effects, obsorbant too) of the subtle clues left throughout the film.

Angel - Wuthering Heights, and the classic Romeo and Juliet this film wasn't. The love scene(s) and eventual marriage simply set up the story for some of the main characters in the first 3 released SW films (Episodes Iv, V, and VI) - Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. but, Natalie Portman did look fit and showed off a fine looking midriff ...

I don't know why the critics panned this film. It is exciting (OK, it's a little long, and the love scenes, well, aren't all that love-ly), there is so much to look at, and there were at least half a dozen times when I just thought that the effects were beyond incredible. If you don't like science fiction though, why are you still reading my post?

My favorite part was that remake of the song Send In The Clones.

|  oleander...............................o-town | Day: 29

angel--Boston? maybe--there are lots of b-towns, Brooklyn, Babylon, Barry-.... Or maybe compared to the A-town of New York, anyplace is a B-town....

Aja--I hear it as "Stashed in the yellow Jag," since he goes on to say, "I've got my life and laundry in a Gladstone bag." So many ways to hear things....

jason--no, I missed that one, though I heard about it.... Is it worth reading, then? Say, how about if we all take turns sending you mp3's of our very most favorite jazz tunes? Maybe that would be a more efficient search method.

Blaise--I feel sure you've done this already, but a juggernaut is an implacable force, thing, or belief that crushes all before it. It comes from the Hindi jaganath, which is a god made from one of Krishna's bones when his spirit split, and also the huge sixteen-wheeled cart with a Krishna idol on it which is pulled by hundreds of devotees. The legend is that as it rolled unstoppably on, some devotees threw themselves under the wheels to be crushed. This may be apocryphal. A coach and six is a coach pulled by six horses, like a stagecoach. Mr. Quick, as opposed maybe to Mr. Dead?

|  Original Lester | Day: 29

Chancellor Palpatine= Darth Sidious= The Emperor

Star Wars buffs knew this already, but your main clue in Episode I is the fact that Darth Sidious is spending all his time on Coruscant, telling the Trade Federation that he will bog down the Senate in procedures. He is actually seen on Coruscant in his conversation with Darth Maul.

For those who find this whole SW thing not worth discussing in the GB, all I can tell you is that a new CD or tour, or any freakin' hint of either, would certainly turn my focus to the Dan.

Oh you meant....lol lol

|  StAl | Day: 29

 >StAl's mailing list doesn't really work...

Does too!

Been away for a couple 3-4 days. No time to catch-up. If you've addressed me in a recent post and I did not respond, I wasn't ignoring you. Just been away...

...At the very successful Sasquatch Festival this weekend at the Gorge. It was completely sold out. As crowded as I've ever seen the Gorge. Worse than Steely Dan, Further Festival and Phish in 1998 (not 1999 or 2000). And not a single major act on the bill.

WOMAD has been cancelled this year. Boo hoo. Apparently there was a problem locating a sponsor as well as arranging for visas for all the performers in this post 9/11 climate. That leaves me with only Bruce Hornsby at Zoo Tunes this year. Overall, a shitty Summer in the NW for music.

Bill: Here's what you do...Ramble on down to your local supermarket and grab yourself a shopping cart. Then, wheel said shopping cart up to the main office of the NY State Transportation Department and tell 'em to fill it with cash.

Molly: I can help you but you've got to want it...

Computers are not smarter than you. Garbage in, garbage out. The computer is your friend. Take control NOW!

|  Aja..............another park, another Sunday | Day: 29

angel-re: the lyrics you quoted from 2nd A: "Smashed in a Yellow Jag". Actually the line is "Cashed in the yellow jag" but what you heard works really well, too! Sorta like an interviewer of Becker and Fagen who told them instead of hearing "call me Deacon Blues" he heard "call me deconfused". Becker and Fagen decided they liked his version better.

Beautiful, sunny day today. "Almost Gothic" and "Jack of Speed" go really well on bright spring days.

Show biz kids makin movies of themselves...
That song always brings Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie to mind for me...Kinda makes ya wonder about what inspired Fagen & Becker don't it?
Jason, I enjoy reading your posts! There is really no congruent thread here in Banyanland. You're doing fine.... Check out Jerry Harrison, (formerly of Talking Heads) Casual Gods. Some of the songs lend themselves to Sci-fi. All that passion and fury set to kinda funked up dance music.Warren Zevon had out a CD titled Transverse City, that has a futuristic theme...and for some reason I've always thought some of Ry Cooder's stuff sounds kinda sci-fi oriented. Wasn't trying to insult you by earlier recommendations of lighter jazz. I grew up listening to Coltrane, Billie Holliday ect... Sometimes I just like listening to the simpler music.
St.Al i'm still having problems with my computer. I can't get on the mailing list, the help page for chat is in computer chinese....lol. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
well off to fight the good fight
be peaceful and loving M.

Spent some time in the archives of recent past, not to be confused with the deep past, the profound past.... :-)

Hey Ole: If you go with your interpretation of Were you Blind that Day, the line would be "B Town" for Boston.

Other random thoughts:
The guy in Kulee really reminds me of the weirdo in the 2nd Arrangement. Smashed in a Yellow Jag - - sounds a lot like my suit is a bright Irish green, the color and cut are striking. Same primping guy saying these things.

Kulee is part 2 of Showbiz Kids. Even more appropriate now, in the age of Survivor, then when they wrote the song 25 years ago.

|  Bill | Day: 29

Ok where was I before I was almost dead?

Oh yeah! The future direction of Steely Dan. Ok, I'm not saying
that I don't like the later-model, jazzy, laid-back version of
thier music, all I'm saying is that they should at least remain
true to thier roots with a couple of harder songs here and there.
I mean when do I get another song that matches up to "FM" or
"Don't Take Me Alive"? I did'nt get it on Nightfly, I did'nt
get it on Kamakiriad, I saw flashes of it on 11TOW, and I
did'nt get it on 2VN. So when do we get some harder stuff then?

When huh?

angel - is the topic of discussion Star Wars?
maybe Lucas should heed Yoda's advice
"Just because you have the power, use it, you must not"

those were love scenes? jar jar binks had more amore with a battle droid

"meesa gonna be getting some lubbin ookie day?"

yes mu, dan music reminds me of the original bar scene from star wars IV

going to see Jonathan Richmond again monday ...

|  angel | Day: 29

Mu: Vacation! That is why you have been scarce. Yes, Star Wars does have beautiful computer generated landscapes, I forgot to mention that.
Another thing I forgot to mention was that the love scenes left me totally cold. I am starting to believe that an entire generation will have no role model, regarding what is erotic. Spiderman had the same problem. Sigh....

|  Stevee-Wide-Dan | Day: 28

Greetings Dr. Mu - on Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, I must say that I was a bit disappointed by it, but I thought that the performances of Cruise, Kidman, and Pollick were quite good. They melded into the Kubrick-esque landscape quite well, but, possibly, everyone who has ever been in a Kubrick film has no choice but to do that. There is no mistaking the fact that visually this could ONLY be a Kubrick film. Even just the way that he instructs the camera to move through a scene is unmistakably Kubrick. I can understand why this film must have been a groaner for a lot of people, but I must admit that I have seen this film in bits and pieces on cable at least a dozen times.

The film was not as much creepy as it was cold and eerie. Another thing that Kubrick is great at creating. I don't profess to really understand fully what Kubrick tried to do in his films, but there is an open-ended flavor to most of his films that is not unlike the interpretive vagueness of THE LYRICS OF STEELY DAN (There! Got the reference in ...).

So, in Star Wars, is Sidious the same as the evil Emperor? Yes, no?

Just cheking in...man, PCs bite. not even a symbol of the man I once knew..

Underestimate the Critics Star Wars II have...The Digital lanscape is incredible. Tight movie like V (Empire Strikes Back)...maybe best for potential detractors st to imagine if the other movies never existed...

I may or may not be a minority report, but finally saw Eyes Wide Shut last night...many times during the viewing it's "what the fuck it that" "really creepy." But Tom Cruise's Bill Surreal Excellent Adventure ends up re-centered on the moral core of the character...lucky to be alive indeed...spouse and I are shaprly divided, but I thought EWS was surprisingly brilliant, and what seemed gratuitous is now structure

...kinda the opposite of Artificial Intelligence where you pull for the Peter Pan android, but the movie fizzles into a morass of unfinished equations and morality...Kubrick was a mentor of sorts on AI and minority Report visually also reeks of Kubrick as did AI...I'm curious, but not optimistic...

hey, why won't they let me post under a pseudonym, when everybody else does? My creativity is being stifled, damn it. I get an asterisk, and am told i haven't entered a name when i have.

o l e a n d e r--- i'm on the talking books program, owing to nasty eye thing. "St. Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman", the sequel, came out in '97 or so, even though that must be around the time Walter Miller died. It might have been finished for him. It's very good too, but isn't about nuclear war really. It's set in the middle era from the first book, more or less. Read it? I get the feeling i'd have gotten a lot more out of both books if i had a clue as to the contents of the bible. This would also help me get around the town i live in without a map, also, since it started as a religious colony, and the street names are all out of the Bible.

I love being weirded out. It's what i live for, really. You should see two or three particular issues of my pseudo-publication, "Notes From Oblivion", and you'd never be concerned about my possibly being weirded out ever again.

In addition to wanting referrals on Dan's musical jazzy brethren, i wanted clues as to Dan-like acts in terms of content/attitude, as well. This question has been partially answered before i had a chance to ask it, via all the Zevon talk.

"Ambient" is too dignified a term for the SD muzak one hears i think. They're following me around, too. Tomorrow's Girls used to run every other time (the real recording) at my grocery store, and even "Any World" popped up at a Walgreens. Too many instances to even mention. As for muzak, the most entertaining example was a "lite", breezy, soothing-to-the-point-of-being-maddening rendition of "Don't Take Me Alive" i heard once in a drug store. If only it had had lush, crazy, muzakkie voices singing the lyrics. That would have been perfect. I've sometimes imagined that possibility in my head, and almost laughed out loud. (Try it.)

I had the impression i'd skidded into a ditch in my attempts to mingle here. Maybe not.

Anywho, THIS MESSAGE IS TO EVERYONE ON THE G.B.

Those of you who have E! on your cable or satellite provided, check this out.

On Thursday at 7 pm, there will be an episode of Saturday Night Live featuring, my role model, Hugh Hefner and as special musical guest, MRS. FAGEN AKA LIBBY TITUS. The episode, taped in 1977, features the classic SNL lineup, but you already knew that.

So if you do have plans that night, get you VCRs or DVD recorders set up for this one.

Has anyone heard or own any Libby Titus LPs? If so, how does she sound and how would you describe her music? I have never even heard her on
the net.

That's SNL ON E! at 7 pm thursday.

Remember you've been warned.

|  Original Lester | Day: 27

I know I've discussed the virtues of Caetano Veloso before, but I have since purchased his most recent studio release, Noites Do Norte. This has to be his best album of all. Fantastic stuff, with quality songwriting, and a range of styles showing Caetano's awesome versatility. The lyric sheet has English translations. Don't let a language barrier deter you from some of the best music ever made.

As for Episode II, I have to see it again, but on first viewing I give thumbs up. I've come to conclude that those who don't like Episodes I and II pretty much don't understand the story. Once you realize everything that happens is the manipulation of Darth Sidious, it all makes sense, and the movies are a lot more interesting. Yoda is a badass mofo, that we all seem to agree on. Effects were awesome, my favorite being the seismic detonators released from Slave I.

Uptown baby, Uptown baby

|  Bill | Day: 27

 Hey Y'all,

Thanks to everyone for your concern, I'm fine.
Actually, I was out riding again today with no mishaps (fingers
crossed). My elbow may be chipped, my ribs may be broken, and
my ankle may hurt like hell, but when the time is right to ride
then the time is right to ride....ride on!

AMAZINGLY, after giving the bike a very close going over, it
appears to have only superficial damage. Should cost less than
2 grand to fix. Is that a testimony to the engineering that
Honda put into this bike? I believe so. Still, I the jury is
still out on the front forks as I don't have the proper jig
to test them. I'll drop the bike off to the Honda dealer
tommorrow and get the final verdict on that. After taking
the bike out for a 50 mile ride today it seems to track fine
so maybe everything is ok (again, fingers crossed).

I just feel very fortunate to be alive today, and it just goes
to show that no matter how much experience you have at something,
you can't always account for the actions of dumbasses. I've been
riding motorcycles since 1978 and have ridden various bikes from
coast to coast over the years and have never run into anything
as stupid as I ran into Friday night. I can only hope that I
never do again.

Peace to all and thanks for your concern,
Bill

|  Bill...Only 8 lives left | Day: 25

 Hi Y'all,

Well, I'm still alive....barely.
Was riding home on my motorcycle last night around 11pm when I hit
a somewhat large hole in the middle of Sunrise Highway here on
Long Island.

This hole turned out to be an improperly installed traffic signal
box (a large steel box which holds all the electronics for the
traffic light system). As you might suspect, these boxes are
supposed to be installed so that they are flush with the roadway,
this box was placed 6 inches below the roadway and was simply
left that way by our illustrious New York State Department of
Transportation "professionals".

Fortunately, I was only going about 35 miles per hour. Still, it
was dark and I could'nt really make out that the hole was as
large or deep as it was until I was right up on it. All I could
do was brace for the impact.

The bike entered the hole and catapulted up about 3 feet in the air.
I was lucky to maintain any sort of control as the force of the
impact was incredible. The bike came down on it's side with me
underneath. The wieght of the bike actually worked in my favor as
a smaller bike would have probably flipped end-over-end and been
damaged far more than this 800 pound bike was. Still, having an
800 pound motorcycle land on you at speed is...well...interesting.

The bike slid for about 20 feet and came to a stop. Fortunately
it stayed in the righthand lane of the highway. The big box
truck, which was behind me was just able to avoid running me over
as it swerved around and missed me by just 2 1/2 feet. Again,
to my benefit, a couple of guys were standing on the corner and
rushed over to help me get up or I might have been hit by a car,
or two, or three... (Edwin Peralta wherever you are, thanks man..)

The police arrived and blocked off the lane so that no one else
would hit the hole and called for an ambulance. My left side was
hurt but I figured it was just bruised ribs and did'nt go to the
hospital as that time...I was more worried about the bike than
myself to be honest and just wanted to see if it was still
rideable. It was scraped down the whole left side but I turned the
key on and it fired up and ran ok, so I decided to ride the bike
home.

After I got home and put the bike in the garage, I picked up my
digital camera and decided to go back and take a few pictures of
the traffic signal box and the hole. I had a feeling that the
New York State D.O.T. inspector would fill the hola in and,
aside from the somewhat dark police photographs, I would have no
proof that the hole was ever there. It was a good thing that
I did because the next morning the hole was filled.

Anyway, after taking some shots of the accident scene, my sister
convinced me to get checked out at the local hospital. As it
turns out my ribs were'nt bruised after all...they were broken.
Yep, three broken ribs.

And so, what began as a nice relaxing Friday evening cruise, turned
out to be a nightmare thanks to our friends at the New York State
Department of Transportation and thier very professional staff.
But hey, I needed a vacation after all so what the heck.

Hey, just saw Warren Zevon has a new one...the dude defines Gonzo. The Hockey song sounds classic

My Ride's Here
released May 7, 2002

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
"Warren Zevon has always been one of the most literate songwriting storytellers. Thus, it makes sense that My Ride's Here (the title refers to the vehicle the Grim Reaper might drive) comes in the form of a cool rock-literary crossover. Zevon once used novelist Thomas McGuane as a collaborator; here, he employs the considerable talents of Hunter S.-Thompson, Carl Hiaasen, and sportswriter Mitch Albom (of Tuesdays with Morrie fame) to aid in his satiric little gems, and he's hit a grand slam this time out. "Basket Case," the Hiaasen collaboration, is the ultimate music/book tie-in, sardonically performed in the metallic style of the Slut Puppies, the band in Hiaasen's bestselling mystery novel Basket Case. "You're a Whole Different Person When You're Scared," the Thompson collaboration, is a dark, bluesy, philosophical vamp, but it's Albom's humorous "Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)"--featuring guest vocalist David Letterman(!)--that ultimately steals the CD. Not that Zevon banks solely on his book-writing buddies. "Sacrificial Lambs," a cynical (but sadly true) look at modern celebrity; "MacGillycuddy's Reeks," an authentic-sounding Irish folk parody; and the Dylanesque hallucinations of the title track all prove the once excitable boy is still in fine shape. --Bill Holdship"

Belaying or what ever, is an old sailor, like me. It is when you take the line to a cleat on a mooring dock. You twist it around a few times and flip it over to lock it in place. To secure not only the boat, but your own soul. And the souls you take along.

Getting off the boat is shakey. It always is, as your turn and look behind. But you have faith in the wind, and surf, and the tide. Then you walk away.................and you know you have made the best choice.....for you.

The boat might sail, it might sink, in the next storm. But you did the best you could, cuz' you tied the knot.

Hey, I don't post here, or do I?

 I am not a witch.

I forgive.
But I never forget.

I think sometimes we all point a wicked, crooked finger back at ourselves.

In sharpen tounge and slander we call the fold in the cards. Some of us just fold them. Go away gracefully.

Some of us throw them as darts.

Sometimes the darts miss the target because it is a mirror. They slide down. It is the hand that picks them up.....that is the evil one.

Think before you push off the bottom.

Oleander, didn't think you got bored with the Dan! But unlike Steely, "long-term relationship" sex can get boring....The nature of erotic love tends to change. Sometimes I think you trade that passion for comfort. Comfort and security are not bad things...just different. It's hard to be passionate when you have a sick kid...a terrible day at work ect..Besides, I said it half jokingly. Don't worry, I know how to read !!!

|  oleander | Day: 24

Molly--sorry you haven't experienced that.... And you got that I was bored with SD where? Read more carefully, hon.

Bluz, the witches mentioned in Mailers book lured sailors to crash their boats by building fires. The sailors seeing the fires from out in the sea would think they were beacons from shore for a safe place to dock. The ships would crash, and the Sailors would be forced to swim to shore. Then the witches would kill and eat the sailors. The main character in the book was married to a woman/witch who drew men to her light, and then devoured them. The more the man loved her, the more she destroyed him. ...Moral of story; Don't mess with witches! Admire their beauty. Look at their fire, and then walk away.
Talk soon M.

Dano~ And I thought I was a magnificent lover till I found out that my wife had Terret's Syndrome.

oleander~ Now you're getting all these emotional hair-triggers all riled up. I say if Steely Dan was so much like sex, they'd have named themselves after a dildo or something. [And please , people, for the sake of your romantic relationships, don't try making love while "Bodhisattva" is playing.]

Aja~ Nice graphics in Post# 1745, during your anatomical comparison of two ladies. I believe that's the most I've ever been aroused by an electronic representation of 8 parentheses and 4 astericks.

I once dated a girl on Mizar 5, whose mammagraphic representation would have required 3 parentheses, an ampersand, a lower and upper case "W" and between 3 and 5 pound signs depending on the time of year.

Midnite Cruiser~ Great photo. And I liked the psychedelia: making it look, not only like you were in a revolving forest, but that your guitar had 12 strings. Far out, innagaddadavida.

The ultimate sex song from an immature male's perspective is Feel Like Makin Love by Bad Company. It starts out all slow and seductive and very quickly (too quickly) speeds up to the "there's no holding back tempo" (not quite Slowhand, if ya know what I mean).

Now, a much better choice from a "mature" perspective is "The Great Gig in the Sky" by you know who. Seriously, even if you detest Pink Floyd, how is it possible not to love Great Gig? It's just not. IMHO.

jason - try the precursor to the crusaders, the "jazz crusaders" - they had some great late 60's stuff - tough to find, though - i have some old cassettes that still get airplay in my house - definitely not lite jazz imo

joe sample was part of that original structure and he took the next level the crusaders to new height, his solo stuff is more mellow, but personally, i still love it - he's part of the top of my list

of course, there's always dave brubeck, you know, who is the top of my list - start with "jazz goes to college" from the 50's and his releases from russia, mexico city, and japan later on - groundbreaking stuff - nobody can improvise and stretch like he can

Great sex in a long term relationship, now that's a contradiction !!! Got to disagree with you Oleander. Never got bored with the Dan...lol
Stevee, somehow I doubt if I'd have much trouble motivating you off that couch. Keeping Mrs. Stevee from scatching my eyes out, now that would be a challenge! Like I said before, (and I know this is a generalization!) I love big people. They have bigger hearts, bigger intellects, more of an appetite for all the good things in life; sex, fun, music, food ect...I've done several painting of large women. To me they are more interesting visually. Of course you live out in the land of make believe, so I can see why you'd feel like you need to change..
Bluz, have you read a book called "Tough Guys Don't Dance"? He writes about witches. I'll talk to you soon. :)
Wild Bill, Jaz, Ed and Blink always a pleasure talking.
MR TURKEY, come on back in. We usually have a good time! Sometimes it's nice just to have fun...
Jason, I'd try some of the solo works of the artists that have played with Steely Dan. Larry Carlton and Tom Scott have some fine CD's out. Chet Baker, Michael Franks....and of course David Sanborn (get Pearls) are a way of aquainting yourself with jazz. Jazz can be an aquired taste. Dabble some in the lighter elements of it, before trying more traditional sounds.
LcPaul, honey I just don't know what to say....Sending good thoughts your way.

Burton-On-Trent - I say I don't know what his name is, you say which one???? How come you know so much about Wishbone? How are you on Canned Heat and Grand Funk Railroad? Not to mention Ogden's Nutgone Flake? Or Durban Poison? ~..~

Just back in from lunch at Limoncello with colleagues. Rainy, overcast, cold. Winter on its way. Which in Cape Town means wind and rain. But I guess that's the trade-off for living in THE most beautiful city in the world. Seriously. Three bottles of Jordan Sauvignon Blanc between four of us. Calamari grilled with chilli and garlic, penne with pancetta, grilled salmon, ravioli stuffed with mushrooms and ricotta. My son, who's a chef, would have been envious.

Sorry I didn't mention the D-word. Oh look, I did.

|  Randy | Day: 24

Great point and post (#1808) concerning Steely Dan's jazz leanings "vs." their rock elements. This issue comes up quite a bit concerning Crosby, Stills & Nash, with the hypothetical argument being "electric or acoustic," with of course the whole issue with both bands being that it's the balance and mixture of both (one against the other) that make the band's music interesting; I actually do have a slight preference (in the case of CSN) for the full-band electric material (with the much underrated Stephen Stills' guitarwork to the fore), but it's the balance that makes the whole concept that much stronger.

For Steely Dan, having jazzy 13th or flat-five chords offset by stinging blues or distorted hard-rock guitar solos is what stirs the psyche: the unusual juxtaposition of both elements with their always superb arrangements and production, not to mention cryptic lyrics of substance and intellectual depth.

There is not another band in rock with the harmonic sophistication, and stellar musical aesthetic of Steely Dan: the best of rock's power, energy, and intelligence with the subtlety, attention to detail, adventurousness, and groove of the best jazz.

"Broadway duchess / darling if you only knew / half as much as / everybody thinks you do..." - Steely Dan, 'I Got The News'

lcpaulatlast - my guess is that you're using Netscape. I have the same problem - the link from "Post Message" at the top, to the input form at the bottom doesn't work. I mentioned this a few weeks back - the problem is that the input form's anchor name should be "sign", not "#sign" as it is currently. St Al - that should fix it.

Stevee - glad we were able to bring you round to those NF chords. One extra detail (my last word on this, I promise...!) - there's an extra chord between the F#6 and A/B chords. The right hand jumps back to the E triad used for the C#m7, before moving to the A/B chord.

i.e you get:

C# / B E G#

F# / A# D# F#

F# / B E G# (briefly!)

B / A C# E

You already mentioned that the F#aug chord (the D# to D change) only comes in the outtro - probably just a slip of the fingers that you typed it in for the intro chords. I havn't worked out those final few chords at the very end of the song - will have to try yours out...

Have a good weekend folks

 Gee.

Haven't been able to access POST MESSAGE for almost a week. St Al? Please help. I click on it but nothing happens and I can't get to the bottom of my pages.

Mol - No knickers. No knockers. No Gwen. Heard her being interviewed on the wireless yesterday though and my heart ached for missing her and her bustier. And her derriere. How sad is my life?

Fuck.

Had my turntable (Dual belt-drive for the curious) repaired yesterday. Got home last night brimming with anticipation. Now understand, it's been about ten years since I've listened to my vinyl. So, I hook everything up into my Rotel amp. Balance the arm. Then the moment of truth. Gaucho or Nightfly? After heated internal debate, my psyche plumps for Gaucho. Get the disc on the rubber turntable. It's rotating. I carefully place the needle on the vinyl and hey presto! Silence. Fucking deathly silence. My disappointment was palpable. So back to the repair shop I go today, trying to contain my rage.

Oh lp, the "what kind of tea do you drink" question.

My answer: Beer.

A review of Sally Semrad in today's New Times LA -- she is yet another participant in my Pink Floyd tribute CD (she's doing Wish You Were Here)

Sally Semrad
Left of Me (Stanley Recordings)
BY SEAN O'NEILL

The voice of Sally Semrad is a warm, supple and comforting instrument. Some of the songs on Left of Me are gauzy, gossamer things, buoyed along by lulling electronic beats and softly strummed acoustic guitars, others are filled with gentle mandolins and shaded accordion, pastoral and placid like sepia-colored classics by the Band ("Too Late"), with the welcome addition of a little estrogen. Some have swirling, Zep-Arabesque passages ("Unbreakable"), while others are built around computer blips and found noises that wouldn't sound out of place on a Radiohead record. Always, though, it's that voice that draws the listener in. Even on an initial spin, Semrad somehow sounds instantly familiar, like she's been bouncing around in your head for a while.

Though she may at times wear her influences on her sleeve -- a touch of Abbey Road-style Wall of Sally vocals here, a dab of dub there -- Semrad is by no stretch a slave to classic rock (like Wilco, she incorporates influences on her way to transcending them) and at times she makes you think how nice it might be for Big Media to have a Sheryl Crow who wasn't completely full of shit. Semrad's got the look, all right -- she's young, blond and a delicate, almost fey, type of fine -- but more importantly, she's got chops to spare, as a singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. Her lyrics can be pithy and wicked, often laced with a very feminine sense of sweet tragedy.

Semrad is backed throughout Left of Me by Yortoise, the house band at Stanley Recordings, her Venice-based label, and the band does a superlative job of fleshing out her compositions, with multi-instrumentalist and producer John Would leading the way through an oft-times dazzling display of textures and styles. "Try to believe/In what's left of me," Semrad sings in the title track, and after giving this disc a good listen, believing in her is an easy thing to do.

Of course, it's the sex, stupid!

Gratuitous Neil Finn update: With some Dangential discussion about order, disorder, and reorder of tracks, the new lineup on One All released Tuesday is a substantial improvement on what was a fine album (One Nil) to begin with. Drving Me Mad was moved from the #11 spot to #2 and Last to know and Wherever You Are switching 4 and 5, The result is a better flow Two tracks, Lullaby Requiem and Human Kindness were added - very strong and distinctive tracks. Lullaby has a heavenly 60s pop feel. Human Kindness has a Todd Rundgren feel - very nice tunes. in addition The Climber, Driving Me Mad, Hole in the Ice, and Turn and Run were remixed with better balance and fidelity. The Climber benefits most from the remix - has a real live feel now...I would have left Turn and Run a little more acoustic and the harmonies in chorus should have been left more up front in the mix (only complaint). Fittingly, the closer Into the Sunset, a very strong track has been left alone... Highly recommended.

|  W1P | Day: 23

Wow, Oleander, I'm perspiring after reading that! ;-)

|  oleander..........................................beau riffage | Day: 23

Re: Steely rock vs. Steely jazz?--For me it's like sex. Sometimes you want full-out, hard-rockin', sweaty, down & dirty bluesy, and sometimes deliciously improvisational, ebb & flow-y, sensuous, subtly interwoven riffage. Thus Steely Dan is the perfect lover: you can have either, or both, depending on your mood; you can modulate the volume; you can choose your tempo; and you can switch them off without hurting their feelings.

Now that I think about it, Steely Dan is like great sex in a long-term relationship. There's the steadfast, continuous-flame passion of the familiar music, which at certain moments can still seem new, plus they keep you tantalized by holding out just long enough, and they come up with thrilling little new things at the most unexpected moments (voluntarily or not).

Any SubGenii out there? *** Or science-fiction-oriented people? *** Last devastating listen was "A Canticle for Leibowitz", plus the recent (40 years later) sequel. donald seems to have a science-fiction bent, if not both of them. Best s.f. song of all time-- "king of the world". It and "canticle" are both so effective because they are so incredibly grounded in the harsh day-to-day reality of what "life" after a nuclear war would be like. Not that there's any competition whatsoever in the category of SF songs-- who else has done even one that isn't embarrassing? I always think of the book and song together now. Scary as hell. Come to think of it, new category-- genuinely frightening songs. I'm guessing that Chas. Manson album... of course Lennon, particularly Revolution #9, one of the best things they ever did, though only i seem to know it. Then there's that urban-legend sort of song, "gloomy sunday" or something, which supposedly compelled throngs of previously living people to alter their lifestyle. "Dress Rehearsal Rag",by Leo. Cohen, (a dress rehearsal for suicide) and "Negative Girl".

How many of you had to break your fingers, move the shards around, and re-set your hands in a new and improved arrangement, in order to play mu chords? This is me being pissed that i never made real progress on the guitar.

Steeveeee Dan-- a large hello. Unfortunately, it's been decades that i've been spinning my wheels re jazz, due in large part to a neurological thing that short-circuits my capacity for experiencing things emotionally.
I've been doing my best to struggle against it, but i lose more and more ground each year. I do plan to scour the library for jazz, though. People usually reccommend fusion to me as a bridge from rock, but that isn't the right path. My favorite song in the world is "I Am The Walrus", so that should tell you something. Some of the avant-garde stuff might actually work better. Thanks everyone for the referrals.

Ever had TRIPLE bock?! It no longer has any discernible resemblance to beer at that point, and instead is cognac-ish. Sam adams does it, and it's expensive.

Molly--- thanks for your interest in the eye situation. With me the problem is not just light but focusing at all on print, something i should never be doing. I write with a thick marker in 3-inch-high print, and it's still not really enough to avoid spasm. Eventually maybe there'll be an appropriate time or context to go into this further. It actually could be seen as a fascinating real-life science-fiction situation, if viewed from the outside, at a safe distance. Unfortunately, my seats are too good for this event.

Wormy--- Hey Ho, Worm-erino. Thanks for the remarks. See above for response.

I wish Curtis Mayfield had done more records like S'fly and Freddie's Dead... sort of like little symphonies, or movies. I *more* than miss (much more) music, or culture of any kind, that has that kind of intense gravity to it. The whole culture now revolves around NOT CARING, about anything, which others find comforting but is maddening for me, almost lierally so. *** C. Mayfield is someone who, like SD, has a sound that stands out a mile the instant that you hear it. There's some technical musical reason for this, there has to be (like SD's mu chords)' and i wish i knew what it is. The second i started playing Major Lance's Greatest Hits for the first time, I "heard" C. Mayfield, despite my not hearing his voice, and not knowing CM had anything to do with it.

Stray unsolicited factoid: for 3(?) years i've been listening to Australian aborigine books. If anybody knows why, please clue me in.

|  WE DO LOVE STEVEE DAN........ | Day: 23

and I got it on good authority Stevee uses those testicles for what they were intended for !!!

|  Diva of Disorderly Conduct. | Day: 23

I was 13 when I began listening to the Dan. I liked the smart rebellious lyrics. I could relate to songs like Any World. It epitomized the angst I felt as a teenager. As I matured, my appreciation of Steely's music grew. I saw the use of symbolism, the analogies ect.. there was much more being said then what appeared on the surface. After I had my heart ripped out and stomped on a few times, I had a renewed respect for the Dan's songs about love and loss. Then there was the music itself. I loved the clean, precise, complex music of SD. At 13 I didn't have a clue.... I also feel that a person's musicial tastes are reflected by where you are at emotionally in your life. As you grow your tastes change. Music speaks to your soul. It is one of the few things in life that seperates us from "lesser species"
well LP that's my answer for question number 1 !!!lol

 Howard, sharkdeville, and Clas -

Your chords Howard are absolutely correct.

Here are the chords for the intro section (with intro endings (#s 1 and 2), and the outro ending (#3)) in the outro of New Frontier
(written like Howard wrote his chords ...)

LH/RH

B/D#G#B
B/C#F#A

D/DF#B
D/CEA

C#/BEG#

F#/A#D#F#
F#/A#DF# (only change from previous chord is from D# to D natural)

B/AC#E

(1st time:)
E/AC#
E/BD

(2nd time:)
E/(single notes:) G - D - G# - D - A - D - G# - D

(Final time in the outro:)
E/AF#
E/G#E

E/DAC#
E/DG#B

E/ADF#
E/G#E

This is as close as I could get it with my "morning" ears.

On another subject, I hope that some of the British GB-ers can explain more of those British expressions that are all over the MOJO site.
For starters ... what exactly is a "chod"? Thanks Squires

climb down - to become more humble; to abandon a firmly stated opinion or resolve, or an excessive or overweening demand, position or attitude (noun climb'-down).

Intolerance : refusal to accept ideas, beliefs, behaviours etc different to ones own - well in the case of football hooligans (which some parts of Ingliterre are very famous for) that is certainly true - However in the case of the vast majority of people in Engerrlund (including lots of relatives and nice people of the GB) not remotely implied anywhere I'm afraid

You clearly have a difficult time getting to your Mom's computer to post, but somehow you were able to write to me: "and with people like you defending us, steveedan, no wonder we're fucked".

See if you can release the chain from around your neck. It is strangling you and causing you to become oxygen-deprived (among other depravities).

I was defending MY position and the music of Steely Dan, not people here at the guest book, and CERTAINLY NOT YOU, ANONY-CHILD.

Now remember, when the bus honks, be sure that your Mom gets you on it so that you don't miss another day of that school you attend for your various developmental delays, besides, after you're gone, she's got a right to curse your existence too.

Hello all, Texas Teardrop I expect a report....lol
Duncan, we haven't done any bad things in chat! Well I did say "fuck you" to one person, but we sort of made up..... There has been some shenanigans, but probably no more then usual. Someone showed up the other night as a Turkish Guitar player....Told me he was looking for tabs for a Dan song. He was just playing for fun now, and had only been playing guitar about a year... lol I am not a musician! But know enough to guess that one probably couldn't play very much SD without some serious practice. My first boyfriend could play Yes note for note, and did a rendition of Little Wing that was as good as any I ever heard. HE got frustrated playing some of the Dan's songs.....Trust me, he'd played a whole lot longer then a year! Mr.Turkey had English and our slang down cold.....My point is who cares? You have strange behavior everywhere.Have you been in climbing chat? lol lol
lcpaul, did ya get those panties yet bud? :) I'll bet you're off cavorting with Gwen....

|  Bill | Day: 23

 Steveedan,

Checked out that link you posted. Those boys are going at it pretty
heavy over there no? For instance "Moyno" posted;

" ...Gaucho and Aja reek of studio trickery and jiggerypokery, but
cleverness in sound manipulation and production misses the whole
point of what rock music is supposed to be about. Fagen even
admitted on "Nightfly" that he injected muzak deliberately, as
it reflected the aesthetic of growing up in 50's America!
Says it all does'nt it? You don't think Gary Katz of the
Katzenatz-Katz "manufactured production line school of pop"
hauled Becker and Fagen in for a session for nothing back in '72
do ya'?"

Man! I might have said a few things about the direction of the
post-Gaucho version of Steely Dan, but these MOJO guys are
downright brutal!

By the way... what the heck is "Jiggerypokery"?

Becker/Fagen to Fagen/Becker and back to Becker/Fagen with no one noticing...
Stunning in its simplicity, The statement above had me tossing & turning all night.
I think you may have something their, Does anybody know when the changeovers actually took place.
Or weather it had anything to do with the arrival of the PRS checks, The move East, The Drugs,The move further Westward ??

LP: sorry I missed your test, It looked hard anyway I'm glad I was away.
Dano: not long till DSO York are you sure that you need to go to that wedding?

Looks like some fun's been had in Chat over the weekend did Dragon ever come back, I do hope so.
I'm often guilty of asking too many questions in there, It's only because I like to know to whom I'm talking too.

Both Linda & I don't mean to upset anybody in there. ( I'm still missing most people in there..WHAT is the best time ?)

Bill you're wrong about 2vN, It was perfect for 2000, Likewise the next one should be perfect for 2003.
There not the only one's getting older & more sophisticated.

I managed to check out Andy's sound page & was very impressed with the alternative
Version of ''I got the news''.
Still not convinced about the Live 2000 tracks.

Someone mentioned the possibility that they could be working on one of the old Goucho outtakes.

Sounds fine I'm pretty sure I heard a single word sung in the same key in Kulee Baba
That was used in Boston Rag first, perhaps that's why Donald was unhappy with the song.

I know nothing about chords but I swear I spotted BABA in there somewhere

See you all later

Wayne Krantz was great the other night - it still beats me why the majority of people seemed not to enjoy his playing in the Dan context.

Anyway Yanks look away now - its time for world Cup predictions -

Engerlaand - out in the first round (Byeeeee !) - and David to cry
Ireland - To win their group
Japan - to cause a few surprises
USA - to be their usual selves (stick to baseball guys)

Eventual semi finalists from
France, Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Italy
Winners - France or Italy - Dark horses Spain
Top scorer - Ronaldo, Viera or Raul

English Hooligans - to get 7 bells of sh!t kicked out of them by over efficient Japanese riot police

Can't wait really

|  Howard | Day: 23

Clas - cool. I was hoping you'd give those chords a try - glad you think they sound right. It's so often that a basic triad + bass note approach will give the right sound.

Stevee - if you have a chance to try those same New Frontier intro chords, let us know what you think. Let's not worry too much about what they're called, the voicings are:

LH / RH
B / D# G# B
B / C# F# A

D / D F# B
D / C E A

C# / B E G#
(etc)

|  Steveedan | Day: 22

I have noticed that a lot of people don't know what MOJO is. It is a website for people to post on various topics (threads, right?) and it is an adjunct to Mojo Magazine. The reason that LP has included it in her most recent test (I think) is because there have been some very heated arguments going on over there. Two in particular are: (1) The great debate - which band is better - Steely Dan or the Monkees (I shit you not!), and the other one (that is currently going on, but dying out quickly is (2) Why Steely Dan Suck. Snowbound and I have been flying the flag for our team, and have been accused of being "beard strokers", and other things like that. It seems that a few people over at the MOJO site really do not like the slick perfection of Steely Dan. Oh well.

If any of you are interested in seeing the "Why Steely Dan Suck" thread action, here's the link:

 Newbie test #6060842

1. How does your age influence your fandom of steely dan? - It's just like counting the rings on a tree. No matter how many you count, it's still a tree. I keep finding more great stuff to appreciate in their music, and since my 14 months or so here at the guest book, I have obtained great rare recordings and made new friends who are just as fanatical about the Dan as I am. (Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree ...)
2. Favorite update of a steely dan track (that is, from a tour or you can go the open book method and pick one from alive in america) Has to be Do It Again, but two others worth mentioning are Midnight Cruiser ('96) and Monkey In Your Soul (2000).

3. Best thread from the Mojo board? - None - they're all dreadful (beard stroking fools ...)

4. What genre of music do you feel Steely Dan belongs - use the back of this page if necessary. - Jazz-Rock

5. Compare the songwriting changes from the Pretzel Logic release with 2vN - Pretzel Logic showed the 'singer-songwriter' style from the 1970's while 2VN has the open palette technology-influenced Jazz of the post-modern era.

6. What changes, if any, would you have made in the arrangement (order) of songs on the 2vN release? - I like it just like it is. I am one of those who finds no throw-aways on this one.

7. Best clip from the "Making of Aja" video û There are two - (1) Bernard Purdy "Frank Sinatra", and (2) the segment about chosing the guitar solo for Peg. This was a sadistic flavored version of - "... And the winner is ...".
8. What kind of tea do you drink? - Usually green tea, or whatever is in the teapot at the Oriental restauraunt.

9. Favorite Andy Metzger scored download - Kulee Baba, the piano/Rhodes/vocals version.

10. Guitar or saxophone? - I prefer the Guiphone and the Saxotar, thank you verry much.

11. Jewel or Sade? - You gotta be kidding me. Sade, of course !

12. Bush or Cheney? - Cheney despite the heart attacks.

13. Batman or Robin? - Robin (thatÆs me to NYBillÆs Batman from our first chat session)

14. Gwen or Molly? - Molly fo sho.

15. What is Robot's code being used in the posts under this name? - I dunno, binary, hexadecimal, super-dooper-demento-clature?

16. What are your plans/schedule for attending summer concerts? - I would like to attend some, when I am not playing at my own gigs. (I would love to tour the Southland with a traveling minstral show ...)

17. Are there any Steely Dan songs you are burnt out on? - Not Really.

18. How much freedom do you think Tom Scott really had in arranging on the Gaucho release? - A decent amount considering it was for D & F. Scott proved himself on the Aja album. His horn charts are near legendary.

19. Is there any basis for comparison between Kama and 11 Tracks? - Kamakiriad, the keyboard oriented one, was produced with the help of Walter Becker, 11 Tracks Of Whack, the guitar oriented one, was produced with the help of Donald Fagen. Both CDs show glimpses of the contrasts of these two guys outside of their collaborations under the strick Steely Dan banner.

20. Is there a relationship between bush's alleged dealings with bin Laden through business/financial relations and his ability to run "the war on terror" in a "new world order"? (sorry, i am currently debating that hotly on another board, that's where i've been lately, sorry, just looking for more opinions) - I could respond to this one, but if I did, I would have to have my people kill you in the name of their god.

Bonus question: what color font do you use when in chat and what is your favorite guest number? - I use sea green or royal blue, and I never use a guest number.

|  Conundrum No 2 | Day: 22

Support for Bin Laden by elements within the Pakistani establishment is another contradiction in PakistanÆs Afghan policy. . . . The US was PakistanÆs closest ally, with deep links to the military and the ISI. But both the Taliban and Bin Laden provided sanctuary and training facilities for Kashmiri militants who were backed by Pakistan, and Islamabad has little interest in drying up that support. Even though America has repeatedly tried to persuade the ISI to cooperate in delivering Bin Laden, the ISI declined, although it did help the US arrest several of Bin Laden's supporters. Without PakistanÆs support, the United States can not hope to launch a snatch by US commandos or more accurate bombing strikes, because it needs Pakistani territory to launch such raids. At the same time, the USA dare not expose PakistanÆs support for the Taliban, because it still hoped for ISI cooperation in catching Bin Laden.

And now û An India û Pakistani war for Kashmir ???

|  And now - | Day: 22

In order to avoid tumultuous financial and economic floods and droughts caused by increasingly mighty international capital flows for speculative purposes and to protect national policies from dictatorship by the market, in 1972 James Tobin proposed a worldwide foreign exchange transactions tax. In brief the idea is to levy a 0.1% to 0.5% on money exchanged from one currency to another.
Such a tax, the Nobel Prize-winner has insisted, would be punitive for short-term financial plays and would thus slow down speculative capital movements such as those that led to the surge and then collapse of Asian financial markets over the past decade. On the other hand, the ôTobin taxö, according to its author, would not be high enough to deter commodity trade or long-term investments in productive enterprises.
Some analysts, however, feel that the Tobin tax would be impossible to administer because all countries would have to agree to it and such worldwide fiscal harmonization would be unprecedented.
