Turn that jungle music down.Just until Dan's out of town. Hello I'm Jack, a flying dutchman, searchin'for an safe harbour with lots of Danfriends to feel home at last. There's not much info on Steely Dan in Holland and we haven't seen them in the flesh. Will they visit Holland?
Awright, MAJOR DUDE, let’s jam. Shine up the battle apple, we’ll shake ‘em all down tonight. But just remember, we’re NOT gonna do another tour, and Bob Dole is STILL an a**hole. How’re the acoustics in your American Garage? Give me a Buzz. Lucky Henry "...my nom d’plume..." (Opininos expressed are mine and not those of my employer.)
LESTER, and STEVE COX: Okay, Nightfly and Mr. Grammy-winner, I tried your chord voicings for Deacon Blues and they sound terrific. Of course I’m used to playing the song in the key of Db which is how it’s printed in Steely Dan Complete (a source that has been proven wrong time and again.) The way I’ve been playing it until yesterday is as follows:
Dbmaj7 Cm7+ Cbmaj7 Bbm7+ Ebmaj7 Dm7+ Dbmaj7 Cm7+ Emaj7 (the guitar riff) Cm7+ then the verse starting on a Dbmaj7, then Gb6, etc. The bass descends one-half step per chord, the first Dbmaj7 played (from bottom to top) as: Db-C-F-Ab, the Cm7+ played as: C-Bb-Eb-Ab, I think, and I can’t remember the rest off the top of my head. "...gentle squeeze them..."
(In Butthead Voice) whoa....she said "guapo..."..heh heh..heh heh heh...
settle down, girls, you don't hear us GUYS asking for dibs...unless, of course, there are some of our brothers "out" there...
IS there a homosexual faction out there, full of Steely Dan love? Not that I cruise (wife would hate that), but it would be interesting to know of one.
Babylon Sisters...SHAKE IT
Rudy
Hey JOSIE and FUNKY ONE -- you two go ahead and scrapple; I'll take Walter. JOSIE -- what ARE you going to wear?
Fine question Peg:
I have two possibilities at hand. One is a yellow dress I wore to my graduation and a taping of "The Richard Bey Show." No, I wasn't on the panel! The second is a pretty red dress that I bought for my 9th grade semiformal (thank God, it still fits). Ok, which one would suit up better?
DanFan Guestbook Fashion Hour,
.Josie.
Is there anybody out there who has the Gaucho Outtakes? Is it for sale? Will you tape it? Will you trade for my mother in law?
Josie: My first reaction is to go with the red (better visibility). But, let's see, you're 19, so 9th grade was, what, 5 or 6 years ago? If it's one of those tafetta bubble dresses that were popular with 9th graders at that time, go with the yellow.
Do you have anything in green? I think they'd like that.
...fasten up your beaded gown....
Peg: I understand your quip about the red dress. However, I had lots more taste than to buy a bubble dress. It's from the Victoria's Secret catalogue, and is knee-length, fitted on top, and flared on the bottom. It's simple but elegant. No taffeta crap in my closet!
"It's the dance, it's the dress..."
.Josie.
Josie: then it's gotta be the red! 9th grade and shopping Victoria's Secret?! Way to go!
And how will I recognize you at the danVention?
..lookin' so outrageous..
Peg:
This dress is not in the usual fashion of Victoria's Secret. After all, my MOTHER picked it out and I don't think she would even Think of letting me wear it if it was the least bit risqué. You know mom's. Anyway, I think I have settled on the red one. But why green? Is that what The Gentlemen would prefer?
If you're looking to recognize me at the danVention, you won't have a problem. I'll be the one with her eyes on "fi-ya."
I forgot to mention a funny little danStory to you kids. A few weeks ago I was hosting a Kafka Literature section in my room. One incorrigible lass approached my black and white picture of Don + Walt copied from the Citizen Box Set Booklet. She noted how Donald reminded her of what Franz Kakfa would look like if he was hanging out in Prague with Max Brod (Walter I guess?). That observation sat just fine with me, considering how K. is my favorite author and F. is, well... But she went on to make the sorry mistake of saying that he looked like he had either a tumor or a whole bunch of gumballs in his cheeks. As if I wasn't annoyed already, she went on to discredit my explanation that it was the lighting in the photograph that casted such shadows.
This is why I need a danVention.
.Josie.
I have just one question. Slide into decadence or healing regression? Either will be beautiful.
The Australian tour.
When?
We note from the Dan Cam they've taken off their socks and shoes. Now how about coming down to watch all the kangaroos?
How about it?
Rob
What's up with this?? Tickets are supposed to go on sale here in SoCal for the shows at Irvine and the Hollywood Bowl on May 6th. Ticketmaster says they know nothing about this!!! Can anyone help me? Will tickets go on sale Monday? If the show goes on, will the Dan bow to public pressure and play "Rikki Don't Lose That Number"? Will Walt and Don EVER answer a question with a straight answer??? (I mostly care about the ticket question.) Thanks for your response.
Dear Josie, If I may make a suggestion... why not get a new dress? Since you've done so much to put this thing together, it's the end of a long, hard semester, and how many danVentions are there sure to be, it seems like the thing to do. You deserve it!
RubyPearl
Yes, RBOYD it's true, ticketbastard and Bass both claim to have no knowledge of Irvine or hollywood bowel (sp?) shows excpet for parking passes!!! The reason being that Irvine is when the boys will break out sweet versions of "NIGHT by NIGHT," and "Glamour Profession." The phone lines will be mobbed! May 6th - 1pm EDT - on the phone-yes I'll be there. Trust me, you should be too. I think. I hope. I don't know! But, hell, we can all waste a good hour and a half of our time together, just to be told that they have a wonderful calendar, and a t-shirt to sell us!! Anyway, let's all hope that the boys don't succumb to pop ideals, and start catering to the true loyal dan fandom. Let's stop "dacade" and move to the real stuff!! Laters!
Hey again!
I think Kid C and myself have ironed this chat thing out. There is some new software availble that turns any URL on the web into a chat room. It is called "Virtual Places". Click on it to download the software. It is free and we all know FREE IS GOOD. Starting next Sunday, May 11th, at 7:00pm PST I'd like to schedule a chat to be located on this very page. I'd would have suggested this Sunday, but I've got Cowboy Junkie tickets. But who says I need to be here.....
Anyway, I suggest you download the software and play with it a bit. You will also need Netscape. As of now it is the only browser that is compatible. Upon start up, Virtual Places splits the netscape screen into 3 parts. One which gives you a chat window, one which gives you control over the available rooms, and the web browser. Once you are up and running you just click on over to this page and viola!
To "George" Reinhard: I've been trying to email you but it keeps bouncing back to me. Wasup? This is the address I'm trying: reinhard_heller@hpbbi30.bbn.hp.com
StAl
Josie: Why green? Just speculating...
Down to Green street, there you go, lookin' so outrageous Green earrings, I remember, the rings of rare design Keep my squeeze on Green Flower Street Wearing coats that shine both red and green colors from their sunny island
Ruby Pearl: I like your idea - maybe I'll use it myself!
JOSIE
Please keep your juvenile beauty parlour talk where it belongs, back in the ninth grade. I think I can speak for a lot of "true" fans in that we couldn't care less about what you're wearing to Great Woods. However, as long as we're on the subject, why don't you go naked? No, strike that, I want to enjoy the show. OK, I'm sorry, I know this is a little harsh. I say stick with green because that's the color D&W are going to turn when they see you.
See you in study hall, Kinky
P.S. Instead of worrying so much about the danvention, try sitting back and relaxing with a nice, tall Shirley Temple and listening to the music.
Thanks RubyPearl, I tend to agree!
Kinky: Your post does not merit much of a response. I'll let it speak for itself...
"You must be joking son."
Josie
StAl: Take a look at my email-address! Thanks for your help. Would've taken my years to find out the reinhard_heller@something doesn't work. Must use the login name. Will forever ... I surely will go for the software you proposed. I plan to go onto Europe Online as ISP soon, I'll be set for some nice breakfast chats then ...
Ruby Pearl: Do you propose to be between us at The Gorge? We'd love it. No kidding, do you consider bringing you sweetness 'round?
Josie: Whatever your dress, everybody will know you! Have you also sent mail to my f@#ked-up email address lately? I beg you to re-mail to my address posted today, please. I don't know about my visit for sure, but I'm really excited about the danVention - you got to tell me everything, you do, baby!
LUCKY HENRY!!! LUCKY HENRY!!!
I have returned triumphantly from the land of sun, Florida, that is. I enjoyed my Florida Room.
Would love to jam, and it'll be top priority soon as I get back. Heading off for the Ironman canoe Trip Friday to Sunday, Cortland to Binghampton on the Tioughnioga and Chenango Rivers - you know the ones, my kinky so-n-so. It's all last minute, and I might be headed for a Haitian Divorce as a result. Josie is not pleased with me.
Anyway, the River Blues Festival at Penns Landing is coming up in mid-May. Rob B. will be wandering in from the city of St. Johns to attend. How bout you, my scurvy brother?
Be sure to check out the SD Pathfinder site and check out the "For Musicians Only (Not)" section for a real scream regarding the moo major chord arrangement. I saw your notes to Steve Cox re: chords. Mr. Cox has good vision, I still owe him a cigar for coming yup with the only answer to my trivia question weeks ago about naming SD songs that use strings. I'm not certain though if he heard them or just read the credits on the liner notes for "FM" probably both, right Steve?
ATTENTION TO SOUTH JERSEYANS: A great CD store in MEdford, NJ is willing to serve as the "unofficial" Steely Dan hub for the Camden and NJ-area shows. Stop in and check em out on Main Street in Medford. Look for Disc Is The Place on Main Street in Medford. Good guy and a BIG fan.
See ya Henry L. Replies on this channel only. Thanks.
Maj. Dude
P.S. Can anyone provide some pointers on playing "Any Major Dude" on guitar?
Playroom Johnny: You might as well try the URL http://pathfinder.com/steelydan/steelymail.html to read all WB replies, but here's the one you asked for:
Mr. Becker retorts: Dear Ti- thanks very for the invite - we may be a little busy this summer, but we can't rule anything out in the way of parties, in the way of being had by a spectacularly well-educated and impeccably groomed hostess like yourself & co., now can we? We'll be watching the guest book to see how things develop. Let us know what you'll be wearing at Great Woods, we'll keep an eye peeled after the sound check and as the crowd files in. WB
Nightfly, Steve Cox, Lucky Henry: Don't forget to bring along your axe for the danVention. Sounds like a big DeaconBlues session with ya guys.
I figured I would check in and ask why it is that the Merriweather show was moved. In addition, I have a funny Dan story. I was in a local pharmacy and Hey Nineteen was playing softly in the store. This is odd enough, I only get to hear Steely Dan in my dorm room. There was this old couple buying some sort of arthritis medicine and the woman turned to her husband and said, "Ira, this is pretty sophisticated music they are playing." I wish that I had come up with some one-liner for them, but I let it go. It was very amusing to hear someone's totally subjective, cursory interpretation of the Dan. (with the assumption that they had no idea who Steely Dan is)
- Nightfly
p.s. It's just the calm before the storm (I start jumping around when I think about the summer shows)
God love the Dan...
It's getting so I catch my wife, who historically loathes SD, humming the refrain from "Josie" or singing the chorus from "Brooklyn..." e'er-so-quietly as to not attract attention.
And where's the DanVention taking place (if at all)? NYC I hope. Mebbe in Don's backyard, eh?
I have to say I kind of agree with "Kinky So'n so"'s opinion on the level of discussion taking placed here on the guestbook. I was a long-time subscriber to Metal Leg, where the focus was always on Steely Dan's great music rather than the possibility of meeting them or what one might wear if they did meet them. I am embarrassed at the prospect of Donald and Walter reading this and thinking that this is what the typical Dan fan is like. If former Metal Leg editor Pete Fogel is still around somewhere, I'd be interested in his thoughts on this situation. Maybe he can help reassure Donald and Walter that there are still some fans around who just want to hear a new album and go to see them play live, just for the music.
re: Posts by "A Critic" and "Kinky"
Why should you care about what others post here? If Josie wants to talk about what she is wearing to a concert, so what? Just don't have anything better to do than give folks a hard time? Do you really give a rat's ass as to what Becker and Fagen think about people who post here? I doubt they worry about it much, or at least not as much as you do. This is a friendly little forum, so why don't you both find a site where all everyone does is bitch about any and every stupid little thing that pops into their frustrated little minds? Have a nice day, hopefully somewhere else. You both suck.
REX COCKS & Everyone else who agrees with this imbecile
If Josie and the other "girls" want to discuss their beauty secrets, why don't they use private e-mail instead of subjecting everyone to their schoolgirl fantasies. As far as Fagen and Becker giving a "rat's ass" as to who posts here, yes, I do care. It took them 20 years to reemerge from seclusion because of idiotic fans like yourselves, who probably scared them away to begin with. Speaking of trivial, if discussing one's attire in the hopes that either Mr. Fagen or Mr. Becker will leave their wives for them isn't trivial (not to mention ludicrous) then what is? As far as the critic (thank you BTW) and myself finding another forum, this board is on the official SD Website where topics should be semi-intelligent. Maybe you should try your local teen chat line at teentalk@aol.com. See ya around Mr Cock.
To "Kinky" and "A Critic."
Everywhere around me I see jealousy and mayhem, because no men have their peace of mind to carry them.
This means you! Aloha!!
To all of you that seem a little uptight today....
Seems like they were just having a fun little chat. Maybe enjoying having found other females that love the Dan. But don't take it all so seriously! No big deal.
Geeeezzzz. Smile, have a nice day, peace, love, etc.
...what a beautiful world...
IVORY EDDIE (you're half dead already)
Do you really think you're Walter?
1. Using Mr. Becker's signature salutations, "laters" and "aloha" as well as "the loyal fandom" a term he coined. Have some originality.
2. Insulting me with Steely Dan lyrics from 1974. Again, have some originality.
3. Referring to Donald and Walter as "the boys". Have some respect.
Ed's still usin'...and I'm still abusin'

SD CHAT ROOM'S BACK! Check it out tribe: somebody must have been listening in. There is now a *link* on the SD chat transcript page (http://pathfinder.com/steelydan/chats.html) That sends you to a chat channel page (http://pathfinder.com/steelydan/chatchannel.html) and the newly reopened #steely pathfinder chat room. We got our space back! So let the shmooze begin. Shall we go for sunday night again? 7PM pst?
Hello All,
Tryin' to land some tix for Jones Beach. They go on sale on May 11. Anyone know the best route to good seats? I called TcketBastard and as usual, they were of no help at all. They don't even get concert info on Jones Beach until the day before the box office opens up! Thanks in advance...
Joe M
Yo Jan!
So I go to all this work, just to find you decide to reinstate the chat channel we all wanted in the first place!!!!
Ok, fine by me. There it is folks. To be more specific, the address is: chat.pathfinder.com:6667 -- Room is #steelydan.
Be there, or be fucking square.....:):):) <----These smileys are for Walter and Don

I have read the page and all I can say is "Ahhooowwoooo! It's a FULL MOON!(and a beautiful one at that, have you seen it?)
To George: You're tempting me. Really! I am getting out my maps... To KinkySoNSo: You didn't answer my question I posted to you. Is that intentional? To Steve Cox: I got your note. I'm pulling for you and I'm excited for you! Good things are in store for you - I can FEEL it. To Any Danfan: WANTED: 1 Steely Dan t-shirt to wear at a concert. Don't have one - can't find one - will feel naked without one. Anybody got an extra? I'll pay. Last but not least: Missin' my Pioneer.
Hey Y'all! Frankly, I like hearing women talk about their clothes; but I love EVERYTHING about women. (A sometimes Fatal Flaw). MAJOR DUDE: Glad you didn't forget about my cigar. (Hmm...I only have one Montecristo Cuban left from my trip to Zurich...sure could use another). I learned FM note for note when it was a new record, (yeah I've been playing THAT long) 'cause my little cover band at the time was playing the song and I had to sing it. So I heard the string arrangement. I didn't know it was Johnny Mandel until I read the CD credits a couple years ago. So you're right on both counts Maj.Dude. ....nothin' but blues and Elvis...
1. What happened to Drew Z. from the '93 tour? 2. What's the chances of Dr.Wu making the live set list?
Beneath the Bo Tree and waiting by the go-tree. . .
After reading "Tristan Fabriani's" post yesterday, I'm wondering: Members of the Loyal Fandom, what do your spouses/companions/partners think of the Dan? Do they share your loyalty? Or are they sick to death of hearing it? Or somewhere in between?
My wife Pat prefers Neil Young (Harvest/Harvest Moon, not Mirror Ball) and Pink Floyd, but doesn't mind SD. She asks occasionally about the lyrics, but generally just goes with the music. The only incidents of less than unconditional positive regard came on two separate occasions, when she told me in a, um, peevish tone, that the chorus from "Junkie Girl," and the other time, the chorus from "Hat Too Flat" kept running through her head all day at work.
See you at the Sprangle. . .
Even though I grew up with Steely Dan, it wasn't until recently that I started REALLY listening to the music and digging into how it all happened by reading the books out about them. Right now I'm listening to "Katy Lied" and you really can tell that alot of the high end got clipped when they tried out some "bleeding" edge technology on the album. Imagine if..By the way, I have a close personal doctor friend and his nickname is... you guessed it "Doctor Wu".
Favorite Dan item: "Goin Lost Wages"

My husband's pretty sick of Steely Dan music, but the other day he sang a little for me:
"Get your big black cow and come over here"
and
"Are you gathering up the tea leaves, have you had enough of mine?"
Hope it made all of you chuckle, too!
Thank you, StAl, for the link to me page. Nothing but good times in store. My wife never really even HEARD of Steely Dan (except, as we all did, on the radio, but never knew it was them) until she dug in with yours truly. Little did she know she'd inherit all of the albums as well as a few compilations. Poor girl. She likes them plenty now, and it didn't really take that much brainwashing (Singing all of "Can't Buy A Thrill" in the dark while while she was asleep seemed to do it, although you can't really hum the guitar solos and do them justice).
See you in Rudy's.
You're treating me like a do-nothing clown
I can't function honey when you run me down
...and what the hell was up yesterday? Seemed like there was a lot of bitching all the way around... I got into a couple heated arguments at work - like I caught the BAD VIBE from this terminal (nothing like posting from WORK!) - just a bad deal all the way around.
yeah, so the discussion wanders...that's what a discussion does, at least to those who both POST and REPLY. At least you're not having conversations with yourself, like me...seems like I've been talking to a brick wall (monitor...whatever)....
I'll bet no one even sees (and replies to) this...

Hank:
Good question. Unfortunately, my boyfriend hates Steely Dan. But he is kind enough to buy my tickets and accompany me to the concerts. He also bought me that Greatwoods '94 T-shirt and "The Nightfly." My family has banned their music and everytime I drive with any of them it's a fight as to what goes in the CD player. My roommates don't care much for the Dan either, so I'm left to cultivate my obsession alone.
.Josie.
Hi Rudy - I hear ya'. I'm posting at work, too. This was truly a bad place to be yesterday, but those vibes enticed me to post for the first time. Usually I just read everyone else's info, and enjoy it all. Thanks, everyone, for a great place to learn more about the Dan.
Here's something I found, while surfing the 'net. Is this true (from Time magazine, April 1 edition) or just an April Fool's joke?

I am aware that many former Metal Leg subscribers, such as Kinky and yourself, are unhappy with the content of this board. Although many of the postings contain somewhat relevant information, I think that a lot of the people are newer, younger fans (MTV generation) that are unaware of the long wait we had to endure to see D+W working again. When Bill and I used to call subscribers about Donald playing an unadvertised small club, we always made sure that these were fans that would respect the performers' privacy, and not bother them in any way. I feel somewhat uneasy, myself, when it seems that some of the postings are more concerned with meeting D+W than with hearing the music, so I understand your frustration. I'm sure that D+W understand this and know that the majority of fans are there for the most important reason, the music. Otherwise, I don't think they would be going on the DanCam, making stupid faces for all to see.
See you at the shows, Pete
Hey y'all, I don't know if ediquite allows this but I have a plea for all of you. I have and allways will be a devoted Steely Dan fan but I have missed every concert due to moving around a lot. SO this summer I was finnaly set to see them in Minneapolis, but I had to work all day when tickets went on sale and by the time I got through...All the decent seats are sold out. IF ANYONE HAS AN EXTRA TICKET I WILL BUY IT FROM YOU> OR IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO GET ONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW>
THanks. And if you want to come see my steely dan cover band play at Macalester College Spring Fest Next saturday, do that to.
ANY MAJOR BABE:
After the '93 tour Drew Zingg went on to varios other projects including playing in the broadway show "Smokey Joe's Cafe." He can still be seen in this band playing at various locations in NYC. (Le Bar Bat is the only one that I know of for sure, though.) He frequently plays in other great bands at "Le Bar Bat." Pick up a copy of "The Village Voice," for more info. You'll have to look hard, but you're sure to find his name popping up quite frequently. I believe he has also toured with Boz Scaggs, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Drew briefly came back to perform in a very short stint with the Dan during the Roseland shows last fall. He was unreal as usual but from the second row he seemed really pissed off, especially during the second evening.
Did anyone else out there notice this? Laters.
sorry, my true e-mail adress is as above, not the one above that.
Hello Gang!!!
I hope all is well and, everything is going GREAT!! I want to thank Josie, Shawn, and Bill--really true Dan Fans for their help.
I am still waiting, as I have been out-of-the-country for someone who has the "Gaucho" outtakes or, "Second Arrangement". Most of you are very musically prolific--one of the many reasons I appreciate SD and, have since I bought their first album in 1972.
What I would be interested in finding out from ALL of you is this: what equipment do you listen to the Dan with? Do you listen to them "driving in that car"; "headphones"; indoors--what amplifiers & speakers do you use?; I feel certain most of you have high quality equipment--such as the Dan does, although not as expensive. I listen to them in my car with a Sony CD/cassette deck/listen to them in my "outdoor configuration" with Bose speakers and, Kenwoods, the Bose speakers are in my gazebo surrounding my hot tub. My "headphones" are Sony's acquired from a New York audio engineer who does all of the sound for many television shows and HBO "specials". We were filming a segment for a new show to be aired on the "Travel Channel"--believe it or not--I am in it for 2 minutes each show---and, he couldn't figure our how to put the earpiece back together so, he said "just take them", which I did and repaired them to perfection--just like SD would treat a song--Dan really sounds fantastic through these professional headphones!!
First song I remember from the Dan was in a pool hall in 1972 which was "Do It Again" and, I have loved their musical compositions ever since.
Sorry, Josie & Ruby, but more women I have encounterd over the years have been "to bed" listening to the Dan. Seems to "turn them on"--or,whatever. Has ALWAYS worked for me--even with a cheap amp and, turntable. Speaking of which, I guess no one has any REAL interest in my "vinyl" album collection of the Dan or, someone (the best response) would be able to come up with the "Live in St. Louis" and "Gaucho" outtakes. I really would like to find a "good home" for these. And, Hell yes, they are worn--just shows how many women in those years HAD to listen to SD to be around ME and party. Love & Peace
"Any world that I'm welcome to, is better than the one I come from . . ."
Cheers!

is this seat(name) taken? Well any way first I'd like to say go Pete Fogel!- It's the music stupid! so anyay -am locked in tohght for SC opener(SEC 51 seats7&8(that's front row center-and yes I mustbe happy as sht to put it out onThe Guestbook- but anyway))-and am locked in @ West Palm either @nd or 7th row center- and am in the hunt for Tampa. Remember sports fans we're hoping for an entirely differnent set list here & having (happily)seen numerous prior shows -and thus many of the same tunes over & over(again-happily) I am certainly looking forward to tasty treats like Night By Night,Boston Rag,Don't Take Me Alive,Hatian Divorce,Time Out Of Mind,Gaucho, and- for now-finally My Rival. ""he shouts-she bites-they wrangle through the night-yah"
I thought I'd let you all know a little about MINDY "The Harp" JOSTYN. I hope most of you remember her from the ole NYR&S Revue. I saw Mindy perform live in Syracuse a couple of months ago. The show was in a mall, which was slightly depressing for me and her both! But hey, without D&W, you gotta start somewhere! Anyway, I approached her, asked her if she was really Mindy Jostyn, and had her sign my revue ticket. She was totally flattered and totally cool. She delayed her show by about fifteen minutes to talk with me about The Dan, Zingg, music in general, and why she had so many harmonicas with her. She was so cool!! The show was great. In the middle of the set an elderly woman shouted out: "You're perfect for us all, Molly, just wonderful!" After a quick name correction Mindy got totally psyched from this, and jammed really hard for the rest of the set. All I know is that she was great with D&W (my brother & I would go nuts every time she was acknowledged during the shows), great solo, and her album is pretty cool too! Yes, she has an album called "Five Miles From Hope," and it's not bad at all. The highlight though, is track #11, which features none other than "Good King Don" on melodica. It's a very cool, slick tune, and the steely influence is absolutely undeniable. Support Mindy and check the album out!! Call 1-800-Prime-CD for more info. After all, we all need a little more of Fagen's melodica stylings in our music libraries! See Y'all later, and I hope to see Mindy make it big, she really deserves it. And of course, I'd love to see her appear with the Dan. She adds so much life to any show, all of those NYR&S fans know exactly what I mean.
Extraordinary talent+Extraordinary Soul =
MINDY JOSTYN.
Today I met with some people from the New Jersey Sports Authority about my company doing work for them. It was at the Meadowlands arena. The hallway that led to the conference room was laden with plaques and other memorabilia from the athletes and musicians who have performed there. Of the hundreds of plaques and pictures, the very first one that you encounter is a commerative plaque to Steely Dan for their sell out on August 27, 1993. It has both Walter and Donald's name engraved on it. Toward the end of the hall was an identical plaque. No doubt these were made for Don & Walt who probably said thanks but no thanks, since the words "sell out" have never been in their vocabulary.
Hi, it's George again. Notice my address? I've made it! Hard work! Lotsa stuff installed! StAl, I even like the Banyon Tree's site better now with Netscape 2.0.
Rudy & his Ghost: I seen yer post, yep. I like it. You don't talk to yourself only. Yer post's read far away in the OLD world, Yo!
Hank: My wife does like the earlier stuff of SD - she's more a rock than a jazz fan. She had to listen to Countdown to Ecstasy which was my first album back in 76/77 all the time, so that's the one she likes best. She would not understand that someone would take a long ride to see SD today ... but accepts.
Pete Fogel, A CRITIC, Kinky: I do not exactly agree with your opinions, but, well, I believe there were some bad vibes yesterday. As I see it, almost everybody posting here has an honest and sure interest in SD music. I'd explicitly include Josie, Peg and Ruby Pearl, beneath others. I do not believe the issue of meeting D+W is so overly meaningful compared to enjoying the company of people with the same interest and enjoying the music. Some of the discussion about personal relations towards D+W that might have seemed inappropriate to you, started with a rather offending post from Kinky directed at Josie, if you remember. BUT PLEASE: let's not go on fighting here. I believe this is a friendly media and a thing to have fun with. I see it and I use it that way. Hope to talk/write to you later! BTW: From what I've read and seen at the SD site, they also seem to rather enjoy this than not.
Michael C. Packard: I'll listen to that music on every piece of hardware I can use. It's nice to have really good equipment to hear all what's in a song, but I still get the kick with the songs just hearing the basics, cos the song itself will still touch you.
StAl: got your email this time.
Stely Dan is just wicked cool.
Come now lets control the negative viborinos. A Dan Fan is a paying customer and Iam sure that short of some type of stalking activity, Becker & Fagan will be OK. As for this Josie girl, I would advise that she don't do it with out the Fez on.
1) Mr. Becker himself asked Josie to post what she would be wearing. 2) And you're right, George, that it was Mr. KinkysoNso who asked Josie who she wanted to F___.
To: George & Hoops, Here, Here!! (Or is that Hear, hear!!??)
I heard that the Dan were refused access to the BBC to do a television appearance while in the UK in 1974(?) because the TV staff were on strike. TRUE or FALSE ?
I hope everyone gets a chance to see Steely Dan this summer!!!!!! I know I can't wait!!!!!!
PETE FOGEL!!!
I have two important items for you. #1: I would like to take this opportunity and use this open forum to thank you. Your publication "Metal Leg" was absolutely incredible. You managed to present a clear, concise, funny, accurate, interesting, informative, intellegent, much needed publication for Dan fans. You were even doin' it while D&W were still being reclusive, and that takes true guts and devotion. Hats off to you & your associates. I think I may speak for many Dansters when I say that it was the only thing I ever looked forward to receiving in the U.S. mail. My only problem with the publication was that I wanted it to come out more often!! (Sort of like Donald & Walter back then!!) You accomplished an absolutely wonderful thing and I'll be the first to admit that I didn't even know what Donald looked like until I received my first issue. (I didn't realize that that was him on "The Nighfly" cover, and I only had "Aja" on an old ABC records tape!) My parents and friends thought I was really weird when I would dissapear for about 48 hours four times a year after receiving a large envelope in the mail. I LOVED "Metal Leg." So, thanks again!
If you could though, I would appreciate a POST concerning what happened to ML. The only info. I got was my brother telling me that some guy left a message saying that the magazine wasn't being done anymore. I assumed this meant ML since it was the only thing I've ever subscribed to. What happened to a gem??
#2. A little note concerning the "MTV generation." I am 21 years old, graduating from university in six short days, and I don't don't give a flying #$%^!! All I can think about is this summer. Seeing Steely Dan is all I care about right now. Some would say that my priorities are all messed up, but I know what I'm doing. (I think.) Although I'm not 43 years old,I know Steely Dan. I was introduced to Steely Dan in a very strange way. I was about eleven years old, living in New York City, I loved "The Police" (underrated band!!) and I loved the New York Yankees. (Still do, despite George) One evening I went to a Yankee game, and I taped it in hopes of seeing myself on T.V.. The next day I watched the tape and a commercial came on for a Jack Nicholson marathon on WPIX. (Back in the scooter Rizzutter days!) What do you think the background music was? That's right. "Do it again." ...back Jack do it again...back Jack do it agian...back Jack do it again. That was all I sang for the next week. I would sit in my room and rewind the damn commercial over and over again just so I could hear that sweet song. (Real cool guy huh!) Who cares about Claudell Washington's homer!
Anyway as the story goes I asked my stepmother who sang that song. She said "Steely Dan." I said "who?" She said "Steely Dan." I still said "Who?" She said, "why, do you like it?" I said "Oh, yeah!!" She said "Well, then I have something that you might like." My stepmother went over to her very modest LP collection and whipped out the original LP of "The Royal Scam." I looked at it and said "Oh, yeah!!" I listened to it and said "Oh yeah, Oh yeah, Oh yeah!!!!!!" Ever since then I have been absolutely fascinated with Becker & Fagen's Mysterious places, faces, characters, phrases, fantasies, imagination, and all of that on top of really cool, slick, badass music!!! What could be better? Nada Amigo.
My point being that we all have our own Steely stories and histories, fascinations, and whateva. One does not have to have lost a hair or two to feel the thrill and the fire beneath your feet in relation with the Greatest thing Earth has to offer. Indeed, I have met MANY a hip Dan fan around my age at some of the recent shows. Lord, if we (MTV Generation) weren't there some of the shows would have been like the Rock & Soul shows: Awesome Music, Shitty, boring crowd. Indeed, Mr. Fogel I spotted you at the Roseland shows (Recognized you from your ENDLESS photos in "Metal Leg") and you weren't exactly "Groovin' High!!" More like "Relaxin' at Camarillo!!" And it was your stale, slow "BEAT" generation compatriots that would get utterly livid if I would even attempt to tap my damn foot to the beat. Do people stop dancing at some age? I hope not!! It's an insult to just bop your head up & down when Steely is playing live.
Anyway you don't have to be a dinosaur to love the Dan. People of all ages can have the mental capacity to experience the indescribable during the shows, and on album for that matter!! Not everyone with a full head of hair goes just to hear "My Old School," and "Reelin'." Hell, if I don't get my "NIGHT by NIGHT" soon, I'll be pissed!! And whatever happened to "Glamour Profession??"
Look, Pete, I didn't mean to insult or show animosity, but it just ticks me off to hear "more seasoned" Dan fans think that the band is just for them. Hell, I bet if we met, we'd probably have a pretty kind Pow-wow!! I'd love to see you POST some more some stuff on this this page, I know you and some of your fossil (Just kidding) friends know what's going on and could help us neophytes figure somethings out. Like why the heck does every ticket company in Cali. claim to have no knowledge of ANYTHING!! And why does the "official" press release as well as "Pollstar" still acknowledge the "MGM Grand" when I spoke with "Hard Rock" yesterday who confirmed that THEY have the Dan!!??
I hope I merit a response on some of the above.
T.S.L., aka "the artist formerly known as ivory eddie," aka, ZOMBIE.
P.S. It was your generation who CONCEIVED, CREATED, RAISED & TAUGHT us "MTVers." Remember??!! P.P.S. I HATE MTV, it bores me. P.P.P.S. Sorry, Becker & Fagen, I didn't mean to insult you by calling you slow, stale, fossils, or dinosaurs. You'll always be hip in my book!! (However, you may want to mention to some of the older folk in the "Good Seats" that they are allowed to move. My first show'll be Irvine, that should give them plenty of time to practice dancing the famous you know what.)
Hi all SD fans. I want to say that although there are SOME PEOPLE out there who aren't interested, I had a big crush on Donald Fagen back when I was about 16. Now, I don't know exactly why, maybe it was the sardonic humor I was so interested in back then. The reason I tell you this is because I think DF & WB might be amused rather than annoyed by it-a hurricane in a 16 year old's Florida Room, you know? BTW, see you in Toronto!
Oh, Michael, oh Jesus; I listen through NAD Int. Amp, Yamaha CD, Polk Audio Spkrs. ADSTOUDING! On another subject, I KINDA LIKED THE GIRLIE CHAT. Kinda like having a pickup in a dress- ing room. Nice to see the women concerned about their appear- ance and all, " This is no one night stand, it's a real occasion!"
In a near random universe there are still certain combinations Picked out from all the other possible ones Which when given some time And the just-right circumstances not too far from the earth or too close to the sun They will dance and they'll spin in the embrace of the trade winds Playing havoc with the hearts and the upturned faces down below. Babylon sisters; shake it!
Re:Hank's question: The Love of My Life has been pretty ho-hum about the Dan for the 10 years we've been together. He was a HUGE Danfan in college, but that kinda fizzled out. They just don't turn him on the way they do me. He's indulgent though. Due to some tact, poise and reason (and gentle squeezin) he's getting us tickets to one of the CA concerts! He is willing to deal with the TicketBs. And he let BMG music club send him Alive in America, which he gave to me! And he even read the liner notes! This could be a good sign.
Dear Through with Buzz: You posted some lyrics I once heard and LOVED from 11 Tracks! Thank you! Now I have them!
RP PS - Heard my youngest son singing "Don't Take Me Alive" in the shower! Cool, huh?
I see we are back on track (sort of)/(no flame wars). Anyway, the former ivorie eddie was rappin about generational themes. although I am 39, I find it amusing that my daughters current favorite song is "Monkey in your soul" of of Pretzel Logic. It does have a nice groove. Even an 8 year old sees the greatness....interesting. By the way ZOMBIE who's your favorite Mariner? Tino Martinez?

I am back!!!!The real ASSHOLE of dandom!!!! I want to put any potential insults behind me (that is, if any one even remembers me ) to get to the REAL SHIT -- if I only had 30 dollars to buy CD's with, and I wanted to buy steely dan, what albums (aside from 'A Decade of Steely Dan' ) should I buy? Keep the number two as the maximum number of CD's I could get. I like everything on " A Decade." ( Didja ever think maybe I was a little too inclined towards drug use and being used by older men???)
E.A.R.: My vote would be for Aja and Nightfly, even though it's Fagen's solo masterpiece and not a Dan project per se. Nightfly after all these years is still one of the most amazing pop records ever produced. ...i wait all night for calls like these...
E.A.R.: I would also concur with Steve's selections if you are wanting just to buy two CD's. Both have from start to finish excelent music, lyrics, etc.
Cheers!
Michael C. Packard A Texdan
Oh Michael, oh Jesus.... do I love this band!!!!!
Hey now!
To Zombie: 2 things. One, given the bands apparent (previous) distaste for attention, my guess is that what Mr. Fogel was trying to get at is let's not loose site of what Steely Dan is all about. That is MUSIC, plain and simple. I don't think anyone here will deny the fact that there are MANY fans of this band who are from the "MTV generation". For godsake I was still playing with tiddly winks when they put out their first album..... Two, Pollstar only updates every couple of days even though they have the information. The information is already available on this site's tour date page. Yes they are playing "The Joint" at the Hard Rock. Look for this update on their site on Monday.
To E.A.R.: Kick in 10 more dollars and buy the box set.....
StAl
PS. Don't forget about chat tonight at 7:00pm PST. I won't be there, but we've got to give Pathfinder a reason to keep that channel open. Address again: chat.pathfinder.com:6667 / room -- #steelydan
MICHAEL A: Although my Yankees were on a week-long drunk spell last fall, my favourite Mariner IS Tino!!! He should have had the cover of S.I. NOT griff! Tino is the REAL Yankee Killer.
StAl: I hear ya loud 'n clear. And, thanks for the info!! Although, I'm still wondering if Irvine & Hollywood Tix go on sale tomorrow. I'll freak if I spend another four hours trying to get through just to be asked Steely Who?? How do you spell HIS name?? Oh, I have no information on HIM yet sir.
ANYONE: I'm looking for some info on the new band members. (Espec. Lawson, & Krantz.) I'm not really familiar with any of them, & I'm wondering what they have done in the past.
Also, what IS that fart - sounding - like instrument in "Monkey in Your Soul?" You all know what I mean.
ZOMBIE.
ZOMBIE: I first heard Ricky Lawson when he was playing drums for Yellowjackets. That was (is) a great band. William Kennedy is the drummer for them the last time I checked. Pick up some old Yellowjackets; you may like it. I know some of my fellow scurvy ones did not care for Dennis Chambers, but I think he is an absolute monster capable of playing ANY style. The first time I heard him, my band opened for George Clinton during the ATOMIC DOG days and Chambers drove that band like a rented mule nearly non-stop for an hour and a half. Then he shows up on John Schofield's record playing straight-ahead jazz. And he does it all well. Big shoes for Lawson to fill, but he is superb. ...turn that jungle music down...
Hi everybody! I'd like to join Zombie in thanking Pete Fogel for the work on Metal Leg - which btw you find in John Granatinos Steely Dan Internet Resource (StAl would you help out and place a link here - thanks) - which I like very much, though it's sort of looking back for me, as Europe didn't get it before everyone went onto the Internet (did it?). Maybe it would be a good idea to have more ML editions just online - as a collecting point for SD and SD music related information - I sure would appreciate a thing like that. Like this guestbook seems to be The meeting point for the Dandom!
EAR: if it's 2 CDs, I would take Katy Lied and Aja. But just take any of their albums, as you need one to begin with!
Wish y'all a nice chat tonight!!! Naw, cain't make it this time, will be happy asleep with lotsa money in the bank for my tour trip.
CHAT TONIGHT (Sunday) 7PM PST:
Thanks StAl for the reminder. Address is chat.pathfinder.com:6667 / room is #steelydan. This info is also on the SD Site at http://pathfinder.com/steelydan/chatchannel.html, as is a link to connect directly if you have GlobalChat, and a download link if you need the software. Be there or be rectangular.
Steve Cox and Zombie: There's some MacInfo on Lawson on my Drumming & The Dan page. Re Krantz: there's been some recent talk about him & his work on the SD Digest (back-issues at http://itchy.faa.uiuc.edu/dandom.html) incl discussion of a short blurb on him in this month's Guitar Player.
To E.A.R.; I find Gold (on CD) to be one of my all-time favorites, and would suggest it and a second choice. My experience with "The Dan" started quite late, say, 1985-1986 when I would drive 450 miles from Marquette to Flint, Michigan. All night drives with Donald and Walter. And, what can one say? As for my girl, she too is a fan, althought not to the same degree as my self.
I once knew a fellow who has a poster of the cover of "Nightfly". I offered to buy it, but he would not give it up. Any ideas on where something similar might be availible... My living room is in dire need of one!
Josie Indecision may or may not be your problem. What happened to Walter?! I want Donald!!! I heard from someone on the chat line that Walter responded to you. Did he scare you? Is that why you're waffling??!! I can shake it with the best of the "Babylon Sisters." Have a great time at the danVention!!!
I have been checking video stores for "The Royal Scam" with no luck. If anyone knows if it is even in print, could you help me out?! I am really interested in obtaining it. Chat at ya later!!! Rjeskay@gnn.com Sun May 5 17:25:09 PDT 1996
I'd love to be at the chat tonight, but due to some type of configuration conflict through gnn, that chat server is unreachable for me.I guess I'll have to be content listening to SD on the CD.Just as a note my kids first song that he would sing at 19 months was Babalyon sisters "shake it" However The Idea that StAl had about picking up Virtual places(noted in an earlier post of his) is still not a bad Idea.
Ok, I'm perplexed....
Just for kicks I tried to sign on to Pathfinder, and the room -- #steelydan.
BUT ITS NOT THERE ANYMORE!!
Delia, what the f*$ up? Looks like someone is messing with us. :):):) Have fun figuring it out. I'm off to see the Cowboy Junkies.
StAl
PS. I was just using Virtual Place and it works great. Perhaps Kid C is right
I love this site but.......do you people have a life or what?!!!!!!
StAl is indeed woefully correct: as of 6:15PM PST, the #steelydan channel is conspicuously absent from the pathfinder chat host. Here's what I know: 1) the SD site people *had* been reassured the channel would stay open 2) the channel *had* been reopened and was operational as recently as last night 3) more than one frantic communication has been dispatched to pathfinder as of 6:15, although the chance that the channel will be reopened immediately is slim imho 4) nobody's messing with us, StAl, the f*&^-up is pathfinder's, who have been incompetent on this one before.
So, kiddies, I guess we just got to sit tight and see. I'll post updates if any news comes my way. -delia PS Virtual Places is great IF you have a PC. No Mac version yet. Some might say that makes it less than an ideal solution...?
??Plan B for Chat tonight??
May I propose that if the #steelydan room isn't reopened by 7PM PST we simply grab the #T room instead? It has been empty all night. And if Pathfinder tries to raise a stink about us hijacking the Mystery Science Theater room, we can point out that the only reason we had to is because they Ucked-Fup real big again.
Bayonets Fixed? Freak Flag Unfurled? Let's have a #T-party
-delia
LOOKING FOR THE SD CHAT? 7PM PST and no #steelydan room. So let's take the #T-train.
That's chat.pathfinder.com:6667 in the #T room.
Bring your flat hat and your axe.
Am I crazy, am I high? I found a quadrophonic copy of Pretzel Logic the other day and am only beginning to ponder the possibilities: is there more where this came from? Is a quadrophonic system harder to find than a working 8-track player? How will my life change with four separate channels of Through with Buzz?
Zombie The sound you are referring to on "monkey in your soul" is a fuzz box on the bass guitar (at least thats what i've always thought). There is a similar riff and sound on the Beatles album Rubber Soul (song is "Think for your self") Listen to both songs and compare. Anyone want to set me Straight?
Only 2 SD Records if you had to pick only 2? *Gaucho *Royal Scam Audio Equipment? *Much to D+W's chagrin, i am also a vinyl junkie. Side 2 of Gaucho on vinyl. Ultimate goods. Outrageous Cowboys such as your friend will _never_ be welcomed here
Lucky H:
I'll be brief today, for each stroke of the keys here hurts my brain like hearing those early tapes recorded at Washington's Crossing. Boy that Ironman trip is something else. Would you believe I have the shakes worse than Jerome Anitone? "He, he, perty, perty, one. Whatever!"
Got your phone message and would like to follow-up shortly when my brain reconnects.
Gotta go, amigo.
Major Dude.
Chat Snafu Update:
This msg from a honcho at Time/Pathfinder this morning:
>>>I hope you accept my apologies for the #steelydan chat channel being down this weekend. Unfortunately, the chat server crashed and there was a problem with the configuration file when it was rebooted. I've been assured that this WILL NOT happen again. Once again, I'm sorry for any inconvenience this caused you.<<<
On the one hand, this makes sense: it's a new site, and obviously there was a bug in the site's reboot script. On the other hand, who *cares* if there's a "good" reason for screwing up? A skunk by any other name....
But despite my, um, ire, I am tempted to argue we give Pathfinder *one more chance* to become the SD Chatroom of choice: it has the potential (absent further bungles, of course) to become the most central, stable, & accessible venue for the greatest number of DanFans (and it also just happens to be the most obvious and convenient place for any "drop-in" guests, visitors, or lurkers - 'special' or otherwise - to find us). That's my take anyway, at least until the next incompetency (anybody got a stop-watch?)
delia: like, where ELSE are mac users gonna go for SD chat. But thanks for the updates - good to know someone is ON it.
George: thanks for proving that my posts are actually read.
E. Queenie: As incredulous as you make it seem, yes, we do! Ain't it wonderful?
E.A.R. the Alpha and the Omega: C.B.A.T and Gaucho.
"She took a little with sugar, she took the money from my old man..."
RRRRRRRRRudy.
Just got my tix for Irvine and Hollywood.
It's a beautiful day.
Hope you all did too.
Hey Zombie - see ya' at Irvine!
Well, after punching re-dial 1,000 times I finally got through to TicketMaster. Then, I was put on hold and finally, I obtained my tix for the Hollywood Bowl!! Section F1. Not terrible - after waiting for F@#&*ing eternity....but...... THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY TO DO THIS! At any rate, I will be at Irvine Meadows and Hollywood Bowl. And SIT TIGHT...Josie and I are ironing out the details for the DanVention! I'll be formulating an itinerary this week..........
...when are you lazy bastards going to turn out a new album?
Glad I wasn't the only one who couldn't find the SD chat channel. I thought I screwed up. GlobalChat will be fine for me if we can make it work; since I am a Mac user it seems the Net is biased towards us MacHeads. StAl: Wanna re-schedule GlobalChat? Sounds like Pathfinder is red-faced about the SNAFU. I'll keep checkin' with all you little, purty ones... there's no disbelief to suspend...
Got tickets for the 12th at the Hollywood Bowl! And it took only 5 minutes! I did have to push redial twice, though. I was on hold for a minute, too. The LA# that I called is 213-480-3232. The guy even knew who SteelyDan is!
Lawrence: You catch more critters with honey.
RubyPearl
Rikki don't lose that number
Thanks for all the truly great music all these years. Any chance you can get Larry C to play some of those nasty licks in a live setting? Kid Charlemagne was one of the best pieces of guitar work in the rock era but was totally overlooked.
Just got MY Steely Dan tickets. My borther got me some. He used chargeline. I'll see you at the Bowl in section K2. Thats about half way up from the stage. I'm on "fi- ya"!! right now!! Thanks Bro!!!
ps. Josie.....I hav'nt been pluged in for a while...when and where is DanVention????????
Close your eyes and you'll be there; it's every thing they say the end of a perfect day with lights from across the bay.
Zman
Michael McDonald at the Meadows show (hartford)? How great would that be! Backup vocals during Bad Sneakers. The sun setting and hearing, "Yes, I'm going insane and I'm laughing in the pouring rain."
Rather it's, "Frozen Rain", you perty one!
All fezzed up with no place to go...
You can try to run but can't hide from what's inside of you ...
I won't ever forget this ! Thank you for all the great moments you gave to me. My dream : traveling minstrel 's show in Italy.. Will this dream become reality one day ??
" ... turn slowly and comb your hair, act natural like you don't care,
be part of the brotherhood, yes it's, Chain Lightening. It feels so-o-o-o go-o-o-d."
Question: where is the band rehearsing for the tour?
Another Question:
If W+D asked you to develop a set list for the upcoming tour, what would you want to include?
Now come on folks, think this one through!!!
I'm expecting some lively, animated discourse over this one.
I'll reply soon, as to not sway the crowd early on, but think about it, collective DanSouls. Thanks. I might even offer a prize to the person who shows the best thinking. How bout a taped copy of the Merriweather Post Pavillion show, summer 1994. (Was that the show, Lucky Henry?)
So, What's your dream Dan Set List?
Dream Set List: gaucho bad sneakers dr. wu kid charlemange haitian divorce do it again glamour profession your gold teeth the royal scam my old school green earrings black cow deacon blues your gold teeth II
Excellent topic, major dude.
Since they apparently are hesitant about the OLD stuff, any songs on Catalyst are out... IN THIS ORDER: Your Gold Teeth II | Only A Fool Would Say That | Change of the Guard | The Fez | Josie | Do It Again | Throw Back the Little Ones | (ending first set with) Glamour Profession.
Then I'd "go outside to smoke myself a J..."
get (another) beer, do some 'recycling', and wait for Set 2....
el Rudyo
Major Dude: Very good question. Let's go with this. If not for any other reason, its that I'm bored....
1. Kings
2. King of the world
3. insert new song here
4. Night by night
5. Parkers band
6. Everyones gone to the movies
7. insert new song here
8. Your gold teeth II
9. insert new song here
Set Break
1. Kid Charlemange
2. The Caves of Altimira
3. Green Earrings
4. insert new song here
5. Aja
6. Home at Last
7. insert new song here
8. Glamour Profession
9. Time out of Mind
Encore
1. insert ROCKING new song here
2. Third World Man
Ok, no particular reasoning went into my selections besides the fact I like them. The only theme, if you will, is cronology. I really look forward to hearing new material on this tour.
StAl
I think the song list should represent each of the major album releases during their heyday. They could run through this cycle about three times, giving us about two hours of SD nirvana. The list could be like so:
Do It Again My Old School Rikki, Don't Lose That Number Black Friday Don't Take Me Alive Deacon Blues Time Out Of Mind
Reelin' In The Years Bodhisattva Pretzel Logic (I love the shoes reference) Dr. Wu Kid Charlemagne Black Cow Hey Nineteen
Dirty Work Show Biz Kids Night By Night Everyone's Gone To The Movies Caves Of Altimira Home At Last Gaucho
Encore: Green Earrings Dog Eat Dog (from "Walk It Just Like You Talk It") Aja (a great show closer)
This would be a killer set that covers the high points in their recording career. If they wanted to drop a cut or two of new material, so much the better.
Steve Cox: Were you with the Dazz band during their "Let it Whip" heyday? Killer cut!
Gotta make trax.
". . .whatdaya think I'm yellin' for?"
The guys seem a little skittish about going to Europe, don't they? The roster of infectious European diseases they posted on their very own website conveniently avoids the usettlingly lengthy section on diseases communicable through musicians. D+W fondly spoke of their old bandmates on the VH-1 special in a way that made Spinal Tap seem like The Osmonds............ Perhaps upon Steely Dan's arrival back into the United States, we might pressure the EPA to lean on customs a bit and install decomtamination chambers at ALL International Airports........ ME, Paranoid??
LYNN ROSS: Yes , that is me playing all synths on "Let it Whip" with Dazz Band. That was my first record on Motown. (We did 5 more for Motown and Geffen). Thanks for asking. (Sorry for the non-Dan bandwidth on this post Y'all.) I'm still hoping to see some of you at the Cincy gig! ... scopin' out the room for some trim...
AN OPEN REQUEST TO DONALD & WALTER
I am begging you to play "Caves of Altamira" this summer, Please! Think of the possibilities...
To the collective: Way to go i'm impressed. I was just showing my nephew the page, and we were going to add a note, but I'm psyched to see some thinkin' goin' on out there re: dream setlist.
I'd die if they played, "I Can't Function"
Anyway, my nephew got a drum set for his birthday, and we tried to keep pace on the quick chord changes in "My Old School" b/c it gave him a chance to kick it out bit. Plus i've always had trouble keeping time when searching for the right chords. Something Lucky Henry can sympathize with.
So drop Mike a line to congratulate him on the drum kit and his first Dan tune.
So I'm sitting in the break room at work and it is normally time to go back to the mine, except that we have a meeting--the plant manager is going to tell us about our new work schedule, which she's just sure we'll like. But before she starts in, some- body reaches up to turn off the radio. The last thing it plays-no joke-is "I'm a fool to do your dirty work, oh yeah! I don't want to do your dirty work no more!" But we had to anyway.
Re Set List (cool idea/thanks) 1/ pretzel logic 2/ peg 3/ black cow 4/ the fez 5/ green earings 6/ time out of mind 7/ reelin in the years (the new arrangement of course) 8/ midnight cruiser 9/ gaucho 10/ deacon blues 11/ daddy don't live in that new york city no more 12/ i got the news 13/ surf and/or die (becker) 14/ junkie girl (becker) 15/ i.g.y (fagen) 16/ trans island skyway (fagen) 17/ countermoon (fagen)
All of the above in no particular order except 1/ Of course they must include NEW material.
Re: Dream Setlist - -
Suggest loading up the six disc CD player, placing it in full random shuffle for all discs, and presto!! You got a random order of Dan tunes which may provide some additional insight into developing your Dream Set list. That's what I did yesterday.
There are so many gems to choose from. Besides Citizen 1, 2, 3 (couldn't find 4), I loaded in Kamikuriad, Nightfly, and Whack. Nice collections pop up like: Trans-Island Skyway, Razor Boy, Fez.
The real challenge is to reduce the number of tunes to a set length in keeping with what W+D have demonstrated in the past, which I'm guessing to be around nine to eleven. Any thoughts out there on set list length? Keep em' comin'.
I've got tons of work to do, but this is MORE IMPORTANT, isn't it?
"... we will spend a dizzy weekend smacked into a trance, me and you will listen to a little bit of what made the preacher dance."
Maj. Dude
MAJ. DUDE:
Yeah I could use getting smacked into a trance right about now, screw the weekend...
I'd hoop and holler if they played "I Can't Function" as well. Imagine the horn arrangement.
Still thinking about the second half of my dream set...
Rooooooooooooooody.
Steely Dan.....and whateevera... I think a great song to play at the Bowl this summer would be Pertzel logic, the first couple of cords would bring the house down.
TZ
Ok. How about a picked-up version of "Brain Tap Shuffle?" It's a fine piece as it stands now, but imagine if performed live! And it's one of the few songs that Don and Walt sing together on. I'd also like to hear "Bad Sneakers" and "Daddy Don't Live in that New York City." I think that these songs could also be reworked to sound even better in concert. I definitely want to hear the entire Gaucho album.
Piz wah Piz wah
Do the Brain Tap, Watch your mind snap, Mash your kneecap, Rock and Roll Crap.
I could see it 2 ways: a)do their own thing-but include(from my lips to D+W's ear's)-say Night By Night,Don't Tak Me Alive,Hatian Divorce,Sign In Stranger,Daddy Don't Live In That NYCetc,Gold Teeth II,Gaucho,Gold teeth I !!,Black Friday(always),Green Earring's(always),Royal(""mostly"full length"version) OR scenario B- Do "Album" Set's ie -(whatever order)-the entire Royal Scam,Katy Lied, Gauch,Aja,Pretzel-etc-whatever just glad to be there-am up to 4 shows tis go round and hoping for 5-6. "Did you see the day-Did you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away-GET ALONG-GET ALONG Kid Charlemagne-(rippin guitar solo courtesy D+W and THE BOYS(where are they now-Sunk please-atleast maybe7 or 8 guest apearences(hah hah)" Oh sorry Iwas DANBABBLING-sleep tight.
My E-mail address won't be effective after the next few days since I am graduating, so after this message I will leave my postal address in the hopes that you will contact me with any breaking info. I'm excited about the Dan coming to Virginia Beach for a show three days before my 22nd birthday. Cool. I love everything I have heard from Steely Dan with the possible exception of St. Louis Toodle-oo from the Decade CD. I also have the Aja CD as well as both of Donald Fagan's solo CD's. I plan on getting the Citizen Steely Dan boxed set this summer instead of buying all of the individual albums. I just want to say thanks for keeping a web page dedicated to the Dan, and to express my excitement for the promising summer of Steely Dan and the remaining members of the Dead (you had the idea they wouldn't stay away for long). Hemp for all Americans!
Re:Major Dude - I think Show Biz Kids has such SteelyDan attitude that it would make a great opener. ST.Al: You didn't even have it on your great list!
To Walter Becker & Donald Fagen: If you just pick songs out of a hat and do them in any order, you'll still give the best concert in the whole nation all summer! I have perfect faith in that.
Trivia question: What song, written by WB&DF, mentions Josie other than the song "Josie"? I know of one, but there might be more.
RP
They're outrageous Honey let me tell you...
Set list eh?
Being a guitar player and knowing all the solos (in my head) by heart I could pick a bunch but since Walter and Donald told Wayne Krantz not to recreate the studio solos I'm just gonna sit back, enjoy the music and check out what Mr. Krantz has to add to the mix....I think it's gonna be quite an interesting evening with a mix of the familiar and the new...I was a bit suprised to hear that the band wasn't going to start rehersals until sometime in June when the shows begin the first part of July...guess they don't want to get burned out on it before the tour is over, but since I'm seeing them at the beginning of the tour what should I expect? Good music for sure but maybe something really unusual/wonderful...as I'm severely sleep deprived at the moment, I'll take my leave of you and do the crash and burn across the hall...
here in this darkness, I know what I have done, I know all at once who I am...
RubyPearl:
"Yellow Peril" definitely mentions 'Josie,' as does "Tomorrow's Girls." And I agree "Show Biz Kids" or "My Old School" should be the openers.
"They got the Steely Dan t-shirts,"
Josie!
Hi Sisters and Brothers, This is Al&Gas from Italy signin’ in. It’s a long time we don’t post our jewels of wisdom, so here we are. We can see that May has been a little spicy and that’s not bad, but let’s be careful not to bring in too many bad vibes. We have much of a life where everyone can vibrate as he pleases, let’s stay in peace here (we are sure our exquisite StAl will agree). Gas and I we are both over thirty (or should I say we lost a hair or two?) and we have a rather old-fashioned attitude towards Danthings, nevertheless we find it natural that everybody has its own way to celebrate the Dan. Why on earth should a 19 year old Danfan behave and think the same way a 40er does? Come on, there has to be a reason why they titled it Hey Nineteen and not Hey Forteen! When we start looking at our younger brothers as if they were sort of silly-minded subjects it means that we are getting old, no matter what our actual age is. Last thought: it’s nice to play the cool cats, but it’s beautiful when people feel free to be just what they are, and it’s a good sign that this guestbook is becoming such a place. Ok, the preach is over, now let’s start the real thing. Dream setlist (in no particular order): Babylon Sisters / Third World Man / Reelin’ In The Years / Aja / Don’t Take Me Alive / Here At The Western World / Green Earrings / Peg / Josie / Hey Nineteen / Deacon Blues / Maxine / Fm / Home At Last / Caves Of Altamira / Fire In The Hole / Igy / On The Dunes / Your Gold Teeth / Bodhisattva / The Royal Scam. Equipment:: my (Al speaks) most interesting experience was swimming in the sea of Amorgos (Greece) with a home-waterproofed cheap walkman. The gear lasted barely till the end of Babylon Sisters, then it drowned. Extatic. Partners: my girlfriend and Gas’ wife both like the Dan, so they do not argue when me and Gas seclude ourselves to carry on the Dan business. Last year, during an outdoor summernight party in a country house, someone erroneously put up New Frontier after a helluva grunge. The dancefloor emptied all of a sudden (Steely who?!?) and me and my girl (she’s a dancer) went on and danced. We really had a great time, just in the centre of the universe. A big and tight hug to Josie (whatever she might be wearing), a thanks to delia c. for her gorgeous page and apologies to everybody for the long post. Once in while...
Peace - Al&Gas
Something ate all our paragraph signs, so besides than long the posting is also unpleasant to read. Apologies again, and add to the setlist at least 4 of the new tunes the y have ready for sure (...).
Al&Gas -
Lovin' It!!!!!!!
This is the best page in the cyberworld!!!!
The real challenge is in narrowing down the dream setlist.
I checked in some old notes, courtesy two DanRoadTrips in the Early Years with Lucky Henry, who is very thorough in recording history, and it revealed that for a show in August 1993 at Star Lake Ampitheater near Pittburgh the band played a total of sixteen (16) songs plus two encores. Total of 18 tunes, not counting the medley intro of three songs.
Therefore, the Dream Set List I'm considering will be in keeping with the length of the 1993 show.
Also, I re-checked the press release to see what musicians were gonna be with them this time around. No vibes, right? So I've scratched Razor Boy from my list-in-the-making. By the way, the release says there will be a trumpeteer. Joke? Or what? I thought the AinA liner notes made references to Walter's distain for anything other than saxaphones? I'll re-up on that today.
Anyway to particular persons:
Roooooooody: I'm dreamin' of that horn arrangement in "I Can't Function" (honey when you run me down), right now. Sounds great!
TZ: Yeah, all right, I was thinkin the same about Pretzel Logic, but I think I might like it better as the second set opener or first encore.
Can you hear it: "Ba, bumba, ba ba -- Ba, bumba, ba ba" Can you see it: Donald swaying back and forth at the keys.
RubyPearl: Definitley love "Show Biz Kids". I lump it into the "Bodhissatva" category though. I'd prefer that the band is warmed up to play it, so Walter can COOK, baby, COOK.
As for me, still thinkin'. But enjoy hearing other p.o.v.
"Well I stepped up to the platform, The Man gave me the news, He said "You must be joking Son, Were did you get those shoes?"
Laters,
Maj. Dude
Dream Set.
Hey, let's get real, O.K.
How long have we waited for this????
Just get on the stage, plug in, and CRANK IT OUT!!!
The only question should be, HOW LONG??
Any info. on the new CD??? (or vinyl??)
Al&Gas: Definitely something to ponder: Because of the time frame that Don+Walt have operated in all these years - basically writing and shlepping songs in their 20s, making it big, breaking up and going solo in their 30s, and coming around and writing again now in their 40s - they definitely span a couple of generations of listeners. They appeal to all ages because they've made songs from those ages: I'm turning 26 in a fortnight and I can connect with their first couple of albums more than ever, because they were my age when they made them. Of course like most readers here, I've always had an affinity for their music, but I really think it's the fact that most of us can identify with their gifts because we share their ages (and experiences that come with them) from which they speak.
Anyone have a reply to this...?
Major Dude...Listening to the song in question at this moment. ONLY THREE SECONDS of that dribbly sax... Don should really think about putting some muscle (and about three more minutes) into that intro and GET IT ON THE ROAD!
Too much lost potential there. (Story of my life.)
I'm half a man with a half a heart...I hear you laughin and I fall apart...
rüdy

"...with Josie back home on his mind Ambrose left the tourist trail behind him..."
Major Dude: Thumps up, ah well, thumbs up for Mike at his first drumset at his first SD tune. Keep that beat. What a promising young man ...
Ruby Pearl: Your Josie question reminded my once again of my vinyls which I pulled out again tonite to listen to The Early Years once more: With Josie back home on his mind, Brushing off the fruitflies of the season, Ambrose was surely struck blind, With a sight that defies human reason! (Yellow Peril). RP, what's up with your maps? I could show you the way to George.
I'm enjoying the set-list posts very much! Won't add too much there, well if someone would asked I might like to hear Your Gold Teeth II, IGY and Surf and/or Die, maybe even some old stuff (try to design a postcard from your mind). But I'm looking forward to hear them play anything!
Received the Concepts of Jazz/Rock Piano by DF (with Warren Bernhardt). Great stuff. Definitely will inspire me to go deeper into that connection of the blues and SD music, or, what a blues theme can lead to! Interested: call Homespun Video at 1-800-33-TAPES or 914-246-2550. They're also used to ship everywhere!
Al&Gas: who & where is delia c. with her gorgeous page?
GEORGE: Thanks for the lyrical correction, I swept the playroom last night, swallowed up all this weird shit, and now I can't even remember my own name,
let alone recite obscure lyrics from memory.
Anybody know all the lyrics to "Here at the Western World"? Everyone posting such things seems to have forgotten about this song.
as for the dream set, as for me i am a hardcore AJA fan. but i do go back to the seventies so rikki don't lose that number, show biz kids, dr. wu, bodhisattva, bad sneakers. i'am in my forties and to me steely dan takes me to a place and time in my life. i guess i'am just into the music without getting all wrapped in a message or the guys attitudes. to each his own. so it does'nt matter what age you are if it fits wear it. have a good one people
Could anyone tell me what the spanish lyrics at the end of "only a fool would say that"means? Hope to see a lot of you at Kansas City and Minneapolis.
Had the honor to room with a Bolivian a year at college.. I asked him about the whole deal with the Spanish at the end of that most excellent song (part of the first set on my dream list)...I was told it was the translation of the title (more or less)...
senorudy
I was at the first '93 show in Detroit. The highlight of the night was "True Companion". I know that at most shows the girls had the vocals, but this night Donald sang the lyrics. It was unbelievable! THAT is what I want to hear this year.
Rooooooody: "... I'd like to put it on the table but I'm lost before I even start...."
Nice set Zombie!!!
Hey Johnny's Playroom: Whaddaya mean get real. For what? This is cyberspace. A dreamworld. Where's your set list, dreamer?
Re: Dream Setlist - I'm toying with the prospects of D+W doing a medley, "unplugged" of sorts, of tunes. Hey the press release said to expect a few surprises. Ya know, Donald on piano or mystery-instrument, Walter on guitar or, maybe even bass, I'm seeing a medley of old shit, earliest years. And before Johnny PLayroom wakes me up, let me remind ya'll that THIS IS A DREAM SETLIST. ITS ONLY A DREAM. ITS ONLY A DREAM.
HERE IS A REAL DREAM SET LIST:
1. TOUCH OF GREY 2. HELP ON THE WAY/SLIPKNOT/FRANKLINS TOWER 3. HE'S GONE 4. TERRAPIN STATION 5. GOIN' DOWN THE ROAD/NOT FADE AWAY 6. CHINA CAT SUNFLOWER 7. I KNOW YOU RIDER 8. DRUMS 9. YOU WIN AGAIN 10.DON'T EASE ME IN
Re: Chad's Request, ..Here at the Western World -- this ought to get it going:
"Down at the lido they welcome you with sausage and beer. Klaus and the Rooster have been there too, but lately he spends his time here."
Keep it going, somebody.
P.S. Bogler: wrong page, man, like you must be on a bad trip or something.
Major Dude
Your right this is cyber. I'll catch the cyber tornado, click my Timberlands, and give you my dream list.

Short aside to Major Dude's lyric: you think Boz Scagg's "Lido Shuffle" is connected...?
"One more hit ought to do it, this joint ain't nothin to it...."
Rudy the sleuth
MAJOR DUDE: I'M NOT ON THE WRONG PAGE, I AM JUST TRYING TO ENLIGHTEN SOME OTHER READERS. i AM A DAN FAN FIRST AND FOREMOST!!!
WELL, THIS LOCAL BOY IS GOING TO SPEND A QUARTER
HANGING WITH THE MAYOR AND ALL HIS FRIENDS... AND NOBODY CARES....
DUG: The words at the end of Only A Fool are "Solamente un tonto que lo deceria", or "Only a Fool would say that" in Spanish. The problem is that it is in the future imperfect which is a nasty tense to conjugate, so I'm not sure about the "lo deceria".
My $.02 (before taxes): Here at the Western World is a song interpretable on many levels, the deepest perhaps being that it is about the decline of morals in Western Civilization. If I had my senior thesis to do all over again, it woould be on this song. Klaus and the Rooster evoke images of the Olde World, setting the imagery...the sailor's presence tells us it's a brothel, but wait! Skinny girls refers to BOTH prostitutes AND lines of cocaine...A Jackson is BOTH a twenty dollar bill (about enough in the early 70s for a mediocre hit of acid) AND a phallic reference...The silver key is both a key and a needle, the red door is both a door and a vein...and so on. Virtually every reference in the song has at least two meanings, but they all add up to a distinct, dark description of western life in the twentieth century. Now listen to the song again and bask in the Genius that is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. (Thanks to Len Galasso and others for their enlightening remarks on this topic.)
Only Major Dude would've taped this song for me to repeat 12 times on one side of a 90-minute tape.
REMINDER: Tickets for the Holmdel, NJ shows go on sale next Saturday (May 18th)
"...where the sailor shuts out the sunrise..."
BLACKED OUT ON THE STAIRS...
TO ANYONE INTERESTED
Tonight, Cornelius Bumpus will be appearing in NYC at Le Bar Bat, 311 West 57th St. If anyone is in the area and would like to come, please e-mail me before 10:00pm (I'll save you $15 at the door). As you all know, Cornelius will be playing saxophone on this year's tour with SD, as he did the last two. What most people don't know, besides being one of the best sax players around, he also has an amazing voice. He will be performing some Doobie Brothers tunes tonite that he sang lead on with the Doobies in concert. This vocal showcase may be a preview to what you'll see this summer, since there is only one female backup vocalist with the Dan, you may just see Cornelius taking up some of the slack.
Take Care, Pete
I always thought it was "where the CELLAR shuts out the sunrise..." seems to make more sense, any replies?
"Solamente un tonto le DECIA eso," is a direct translation of the title. No question at all.
P. FOGEL: you read my POST, c'mon let's chat!
There's been a little chatter about Larry Carlton on this page lately. I have a live recording of Larry in Philly on 9/1/90. He encores with a SMOKIN' version of "Josie." I'll bring it to the danvention for all to hear. "I must say, I've never heard Larry smooother than tonite!"
Still lookin' for some info. regarding Wayne Krantz's former works. C'MON FOGEL!! HELP!!
"...I only hear the loudest voices, the ones with somethin' new to sound..."
I'd like to take a moment to praise Pete Fogel here on the guest page. He has been nice enough to go the extra mile not only of informing us of Dan related events (i.e. Cornelius' and Drew's gigs in NYC), but also inviting us in as his guest! If I were in NYC, I would definitely go. THANKS for Metal Leg, THANKS for the info and invite and I hope to see you at the Danvention and the Irvine/Hollywood Bowl shows.
First attempted to see the Dan on a double bill with the Eagles in May of 1973. After much lengthy delay, announcement was made that the band's instruments "had been rained on" and they would very very regretably be unable to appear. (Would love to know what was REALLY going down in Cedar Falls IA that day). The Eagles wound up doing an extra set in order to quell open rioting. Finally caught up with the show in St. Louis on the '93 Tour -- worth the wait, but I still miss the opening wail of the guitar riff on the original "Reelin'...". Trying to hook up with tickets for the Minneapolis show this summer. Any DanFans able to help?? If so, contact me via e-mail at Hey there, Uncle Arn! I have posted here previously about that fabled gig that never was in Cedar Falls in '73. We got toasted crimson in the sun before the storm blew in. I remember that most of the crowd was there to see Eagles &REO Speedwagon but I was already hooked on the Dan. I don't know how they got all wet hours before the gig. Must have been the wagon ride in from Ames, Iowa to the west! I have regretted missing that gig many times over the years. Until Chicago '93!!! Hope to see you in MPLS, Uncle Arn, b.c.
OOPS! Sorry about that double post! Don't know how that happened since I only pushed the button once...?? I really love the DREAM LISTS, but all I can think about is the NEW STUFF!!!!!!!!! I can hear it already. The vibes are are floating in from New York and Hawaii. The signature instrumental intros, the lyrics, the prominent and tight drums and bass, the roller coaster chord progressions, the rich textures of the mix interwoven with that most incredible economy of notes, the slicing horn charts, and not least, the delicious guitar licks! Enough NEW STUFF!! to soothe the pysche for at least a year of intense listening pleasure, b.c.
Greetings from a Third World man. Manila, the Philippines. This being my first time on the Net, my immediate impulse as a 20-year veteran Danman was to check out if there was anything on my favorite diabolical duo, and whaddya know, a whole army of Dansters, complete with sardonic wit, surly rantings, and Danbabble. Great! and here I thought our handful of faithful in the P.I. were alone all these years. Some questions to anyone out there: 1.Is there a video that can be purchased of live SD (1993 on)? This would be a blessing to those of us who live 10,000 miles away. 2. Are there any ACCURATE transcriptions of SD music available? and 3. What accounts for the fanatical, doggedly persistent following of the kings of scorn? Is there a psychological profile that we all fit into? Conversely, how come otherwise intelligent people don't get it? I have 2 rather good guitarists in my modern blues band (think Wadenius & Zingg) who give me puzzled looks when I suggest we do, say, "Dr. Wu", or "Caves". Yes I know you're a special friend but you refuse to understand...
It does exist!!! I finally managed to get a copy of the music to "The Nightfly", sure it took 6 months, but it worth the wait. I got my copy through Brash's in Melbourne Australia who thought I was mad when I ordered it. The details are: ISBN 0-89524-176-5 Cherry Lane Music Company PO Box 430 Port Chester NY 10573 Keep up the good work folks.
Luckless Pedestrian: Yes you are right! There is a profile we all share. We happen to like chord progressions goin' crazy. That is not the truth, but anyway ... Besides we share the like for a different way to tell stories in a song together with a groove that takes you if you can take it. Well, welcome to this page - and the other gorgeous danpages! AS to your other questions, I have seen some info about SD scores on some of the Danrelated pages - check Hot Links page on this site, as I can't forge through it now. There is a couple of songbooks, go for it! Your guitar players will sometimes need some pushing to to play that music, but it's worth it! Well Zombie see and Zombie do, I'm here with me and you ...
I would also like to thank Pete Fogel for all of his efforts towards us DanFans and, as always, to St. Al for his bodacious SD Home Page. Sorry St. Al about the change to Vancouver for the Friday, August 16th show. I HAD 4th row seats (in the golden circle) and I was truly looking forward to meeting you, however...since I live just outside of Van. (in the great province of British Columbia) I shall be attending the Friday concert at NAT (not National) Bailey Stadium. If anyone hears when these tickets are going on sale, please email me immediately! On the topic of what they (SD) should play on this tour? I am content to leave that choice up to their collective genius; however, I am in agreement with RubyPearl and Josie in that Show Biz Kids and, especially, My Old School should be played! M.O.S. is truly one of the all-time classic rock n' roll songs! Also, I would like to hear Donald's solo material (they didn't play any during their '94 concert in Vancouver) especially "New Frontier". Regardless of what they play, I know it will be great, and I am so looking forward to their upcoming studio album (gotta love that DanCam). Until that next post, take care my scurvy brothers! P.S. St. Al, you should come up for the SD concert in Vancouver; if you choose to, you can stay with me (and my sisters) and then head back the next day for the Gorge show! (email me on your decision)
Hee, hee! Okay, so far... It's Hartford, CT on July 27 and now (as of today) Jones Beach on Long Island on July 19! This summer is shapin' up to be one of the DANdiest yet! See you all there... Add "Dr. Wu" and "Your Gold Teeth II" to the set list along with all those incredible new tunes and this'll be the best Dan tour ever... Joe M.
To Luckless Pedestrian: George said it very well. We do all share a psych profile. Maybe I'll do my thesis on Danfans! We are all very "unique". (I think we're the coolest damn bunch around!) This is why we need this page - we are lonely without each other. PS: It's not an intelligence thing, it's a soul thing. To George: Are you really serious about showing me the way to George? Luv, RubyPearl When all my dyin' dancin' is through, I'll run to you!
To Luckless Pedestrian aka Gonzo: Sounds like you're a nurture sort of guy... myself, I believe we all share the same gene!?!?!!!! Like most people, I hope, I occasionally question my beliefs... I suppose it's possible that at some point during my formative years I had the radio on... and perhaps some portion of my brain was ripe for exposure to whatever some DJ was about to play... and it just happened to be the DAN... could I be so lucky???? (or cursed, as it were, to have to wait so long for DF/WB to come out of their collective shells?) Hell, I don't know. What I do know is that after seeing two shows each in 93 and 94 (and being pissed off that I don't live in NYC so I could the short 95 tour) IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT!!!! To A Pioneer: Done with finals... whew... ready for summer!! Still don't have my KC tix in hand... apparently I'm going to have to go to the ticket outlet and copy the Sandstone seating chart so the guy with the tix can choose his first... I'll be in touch! To DF & WB (if you really read our babble): We all know you are living in a digital world... I pray you are not sequencing your brains out... that stuff is only good for printing sheet music! at best!!! LONG LIVE LIVE MUSICIANS!!!!!!! I'm just a little disappointed the announced tour isn't up to the previous tour's 13 piece orchestra!!!! (It must be a pain to work with so many!!) I didn't mean to rant..... by the way... just out of curiousity... I was wondering if there will be someone who posts on this page at each stop on the tour??? I wonder just how many hits this page takes in a month.... You know, it seems to me that the DAN could GIVE US ALL TICKETS FOR FREE AT ONE SHOW and they wouldn't even feel it in the box office. I'm sure the interest off of the advance tix sales could more than cover it.... Oh well, now I've ranted enough!!! Don't take me alive....
Josie: Thanks for answering my trivia question! (I thought you might know it.) I wasn't aware of Tomorrow's Girls. What album is that from? My Old School is a definite favorite. There is no other song like it on the planet! Later girl, RP
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!Scored great seats for the Jones beach show. I can't believe that I am able to see Steely Dan 6 fucking times in 3 years. If I die on July 20th I'll be a happy man
RubyPearl: Tomorrow's Girls is from Kamakiriad (Fagen's 2nd solo album) - great one! You should check it out. Also, the Aja lyric is ...when all my dime dancin' is through... Josie: So you bought Kamakiriad? I remember you posting a few months back, prior to buying it. How'd you like it? My favorite track is Florida Room, esp. those background vocals. What a nice sound... "On a night like this, the story is told, how the women get restless, and the men grow cold"
Hello to Josie and everyone else. See you at the Aug. 9th concert.
Let's not forget Your Gold Teeth I + Razor Boy & Boston Rag- but-again please let's have Don't Take Me Alive,Haitain Divorce & Sign In Stranger
Crewmen of the true companion I can see you're tired of action In this everlasting twilight Home is just a sad abstraction Just beyond the troubled skyway Young men dream of fire and starshine I've been dreaming of my own green world Far across the reach of spacetime TC3:24 - 5:10, Verse 1-2
Hey Rudy, Could you repeat that please? Thanks, Kink
RubyPearl: Why sure, this will be a helluva ride, I'm looking forward to some kind of a dream trip. And if the folks will have me, then they'll have me ... What a wonderful world this is. We'll fix some details later. Really. Yes, it is a soul thing. I don't know about "forming" in some stage of your growing-up, the first time I heard SD I musta been 17 or 18, still the seeds of musical likes/dislikes might come from what you hear in early age. My dad was mostly a fan of classics, but with one emphasis being these slawic composers like Dvorak, Rachmaninoff or later stuff like Paul Hindemith. My first rock music had these connections to classical music, I loved those first modular moogs playing J.S.Bach, then a famous early 70's group from Holland (The Netherlands) called Ekseption who played like "modified classical music", next thing that really shook me was ole' Chicago (still love! the Chicago III album, songs like Wake up sunshine). - insert some kind of a time jump - But when I started listening to Steely Dan, I had a growing sense of "being at home", this music being in sync with my own musical SOUL. Have a great sunday nite and a great week!!!
This is from India and in all my life(not that long or anything!!)I have met only two other people who listen to Dan and one of them introduced me to it!!! This is heaven, consider yourself blessed by every one of the nine billion hindu Gods there are!!!!! Tapes aren't that easily available in India, I would sacrifice a lot for Gaucho, Nightfly and Kamakiriad!!! Know if I can get them in Dubai, U.A.E? Anyway great work, you have made one Indian girl very happy!!!1
sorry to jump back in but, i just wanted to qualify my prior remarks by saying-(supplicating(that's for D+W),begging) that we "must " also have Night By Night & Everything You Did-finally the DANSURVEY ON JMckay's report is a must.
Okay, so I'm a hick and 20 years too late in asking the question, but, what exactly is "Every A frame had your number on the wall" from "Kid Chalemaigne"? Please respond to my email address, and thanks a million
With all this talk of the upcoming summer tour I really do feel luckless. Anyway, thanks, George, RubyPearl, MD Doc Kelly for your commentary. Now you got me thinking..my first taste of the Dan was in '75, as a 16-yr. old aspiring guitarist, when I was blown away by Elliot Randall's smoking intro to "Reeling", plus Jeff Baxter's ultra cool surf guitar parts. With more exposure to D+W I eventually figured out the three elements that hooked me for life, 1. D&W's propensity for melding of jazz chords into the standard blues/rock song format--prior to the Dan, jazz was 'sleepy', and rock predictable. Steely Dan's inventive chordal mix I consider to be a revolution, not to mention really tasty. Certainly woke me up. 2. Donald's snarly, sneering vocal tone with just a hint of scorn totally appealed to my then growing sense of rebellion against the social mainstream, which in my country, gives new meaning to the term shallow. and 3. the WORDS. I had never before seen the words of the English language as cleverly combined, without a trace of the maudlin vibe prevalent in most contemporary songs of the time, to create the unusual, graphic imagery and bizarre themes in a typical Dan tune. The inherent humor was great too. The words were also ambiguous enough to allow us each our own interpretations. What makes a Dan fan I think is beyond soul. I know many blues musicians who play with the abandon, raw energy and sincerity within the blues context, but ask them about the Dan and...nothing. Anyone have any thoughts on "Barrytown"? And what's that word in the bridge, "...in the beginning we recall that the world was _____?" Okay
Kinky: I just did...huh? son, please put down that bong and scroll up, honey! So, like, is there a chat or what...? rudeeeeeeeeeeee
I haven't checked in for a while, but I did want to post my dream set list. set 1: Don't Take Me Alive (not gonna happen, but the opening guitar riff would get the show STARTED) Doctor Wu Hey Nineteen Everyone's Gone to the Movies Black Cow Night by Night Any Major Dude Bad Sneakers Kid Charlemagne set 2: The Fez (would be a solid opener for either set) Glamour Profession Deacon Blues Haitian Divorce Your Gold Teeth I Your Gold Teeth II King of the World Aja Sign in Stranger Turn that Heartbeat encore: Parker's Band Bad Sneakers and if they wanted to throw in an FM or Time Out of Mind, I'd faint - Nightfly
To Jive Miguel: Brother, I'd love to meet your sisters. My Gal, however, may not.....Working on a different angle for Portland instead. Besides, does anyone know when and if the Vancouver show is going to happen? See you at the Gorge. Bring your sisters To Doc Kelly: This page used to take around 2500 hits per month. This was before Walter Becker was gracious enough to recommend the board. Now it receives around 3500 (based on last months log). To Rudeeeee: Spending time with mom! Sorry to have missed it again. Perhaps next week? StAl
luckless pedestrian: Barrytown bridge is "in the beginning we recall that the WORD was HURLED". I wanna know - what does that mean?
or is it "the WORLD was hurled" And I still wanna know, what does it mean?
AL DIESTE (a.k.a. Hick) The line in Kid Charlemagne, "Every A-Frame had your number on the wall" is referring to a type of home. An A-frame house was particularly popular on the west coast (in the mountains) in the '70's. Hope I helped. Kink
Kinky, Thanks for the response! I know about the A frame part, because I'm a west coast mountain hick who lives in one, built in the 70's! The question should have been, "What is the meaning of the 'number' on the wall? Also, was the Kid a famous dealer? I assume he was. Thanks again!
"....when the wor(l)d was hurled, Barrytown people got to be from another world..." is probably in the same league as "squonk's tears". Based on the above posts there seems to be a giddiness in the cyber air vis a vis the summer tour. Now I'm seriously thinking of blowing the $1500 it takes to get to the States maybe go to LA on a dare and go it alone. Or maybe the Shoreline in Mountainview. Hell of a decision... Well, if you're feeling lucky, you'd best not refuse, it's your game, the rules are your own win or lose...
Mister pedestrian: shoot, if that's what it's gonna take for you to come over & get groovy with the Dan, I'll be the first to dare you to c'mon over. Double Dog Dare ya. Don't deny yourself....(then again, it's not my cash) roo-dee
TO ALL: I've quite enjoyed all of your set lists! seems like the common denominators are one or both Gold Teeth, and Glamour Profession. Lets keep our jacksons crossed... RE: WESTERN WORLD--Can anybody pull out their eagles records and find out at what date 'hotel california' was released? Cuz it seems like Here At The Western World is Mr. Dan's answer to a Hotel California. Where would you rather spend the weekend?? Whoever posted that excellent interpretation of HATWW, much grass! do you have a secret dan decoder ring?? i would never have made those seemingly accurate connections (red door, jackson, skinny girls). SO please, somebody pull down the dates for both songs, and compare!
LUCKY HENRY:YOU ARE A GENIUS.. ONE QUESTION THOUGH.. "LAY DOWN YOUR JACKSON AND YOU WILL SEE THE SWEETNESS YOU'VE BEEN CRYING FOR" COULDN'T THAT MEAN A HOOKER ALSO, AS WELL AS A HIT OF ACID?? JUST WONDERING, BUT I STILL LIKE YOU'RE TAKE ON IT..
Luckless Pedestrian: I received an email re: the Barrytown lyric - here's what he said: My opinion on that one was that it was a newspaper that was hurled, as the paperboys do when they are on their route and they throw the papers into peoples' front yards. I only thought that because there is another reference to newspapers in the song (Daily News). Maybe Lucky Henry has and idea (probably two) on it.
-- as in "the word was hurled"
Peg, that sounds logical...it'll have to do for now...Lucky Henry: that truly was an insightful bit on 'Western World', got anymore where that came from?
Hey everybody what's kicken? Probably thought I was dead did'nt you. Well Im just trying to get through finals-really sucks. M.D. DOC Kelly: I got my tickets-they arrived a my parent house because I don't trust my roomates-theiving bastards. Anyway I let you know where I'll be-hell I don't even know where I'll be. "Kansas City born and growin' you won't believe what the boy's are blowin'" Keep the brotherhood, Pioneer P.S. Hi ruby baby-it's been a while
Hey yall, if anyone has any info as to whether or not Steely Dan may amend their tour schedule to include Dallas, please contanct me. Thanks.
Someone had asked me a couple of days ago to provide some info on new SD guitarist Wayne Krantz. Wayne has three records of his own on Enja Records entitled: "Signals", "Long to be Loose", and "2 Drink Minimum". He has toured with Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham, Leni Stern, and Carla Bley. He's Recorded with Steps Ahead, Victor Bailey, Harvey Swartz, Michael Formanek as well as producing Leni Stern's record "Ten Songs". Since 1994, Wayne has been touring with his own band, a trio, mostly in Europe. Pete One of the songs Wayne jammed on at the SD audition was "Everyone's Gone to the Movies".
"Richter's" is a locale of Rudy's fame in the old Elm City. It's quite a place for atmosphere; really old, sophisticated, and mature. But my opinion of the place really changed today, because when I walked into the restaurant I heard "Do it Again." Then came "Dirty Work." Then "Kings." And when "Midnight Cruiser" followed, I let myself be convinced that this was Citizen Disc 1. "Love that Steely guy..." .Josie.
Josie: would you pls. include the Luckless Pedestrian when and if you write email about the DanVention (email address is gonzo@mail.subictel.sequel.net). There's another scurvy brother who's been infected with the "I'll have to see these shows wherever they are" virus. Luckless Pedestrian: be happily infected. There's an easy cure for this one: The danVention at LA/Sta.Monica? the weekend of Aug/9 together with the Monday/12 show at the Hollywood Bowl. And/or else take Le Fin at The Gorge (George,Washington). And look natural, like you don't care.
All you Dansters who are going to the GORGE show, MUST camp out at this incredible place. No hotels, no motels, no houses, none of that. This is truly the most incredible place to spend a day or two, and it would be such a shame to just come and go. Stay and chill for a couple of days. Could there be a better way to top off the summer? I think not!! Meet and hang with fellow Dansters in the beauty of raw American nature. A hint: Get your camping passes through tixmaster, and save yourself a long wait in line. Hope to see you all there the night before, of, and after the show. Who knows maybe they'll add another. PETE FOGEL: Thanks for the info!! Maybe I should irrigate my ears, but I always thought that it was "Every Eighth Friend had your number on the wall." Oh, well it's worked for me for the past twelve years!! Still works for the drug chemist theme. I can feel it coming closer and closer and I can't wait! Hi Josie, thanks for waking this lazy bastard this morning! See y'all soon.
JOSIE: confused...is "Richter's" supposed to be "Rudy's"? I naturally assumed my site's namesake was a real place... I don't have the album in front of me, but could it be that you were listening to "CBAT"..?...but then, you may be right; I don't own Citizen. rudy (richter)
Nice web sight, obviously programmed by fellows with compassion and vision and plenty of java on a Banyan Vines network. But where are the wingding fonts? I hope this websight keeps beating in its ion grid.
Hi "danfanrandy..." Welcome to the page! Rudy, "Rudys'" IS a real place! Richter's is another place around the same area. Rudy's is more a dive bar, and Richter's more like a 'Cheers' kind of place. Hope this cleared things up. I believe I was listening to Citizen, because after a while songs from disc two came up: "Black Friday," "Rose Darling," and "Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More." Take care all. p.s. There is a "Greene Street" in the Elm City too! "Down to Greene Street, there you go..." .Josie.
Josie: ah, hope that doesn't make this white boy look TOO stupid with my own mellow take on Rudy's (the address in blue)... "naw, man, just a little..." you probably can't swing a dead cat without hitting SD references up there...geez, some folks have ALL the luck. danfanrandy: just you wait. -roux die
the work seduces us with light.
Dear luckless pedestrian, Peg and other scurvy cousins ...not sure if I should crash this lyrics party because every time a lyric comes up the tune goes through my head but maybe some should head for the Steely Dan Internet Resource and complete set of lyrics... I mean ‘the world was hurled’!?!(loved the Daily News connection!).. .. surely it’s ‘the Word was heard’ (as in God’s...doesn’t anyone go to church any more?)... This is only because someone with the fabled Dan decoder ring kindly explained the Barry Town Mormon, or some such, references a while back.. hence ‘but look at what you wear, and the way you cut your hair’. Anyway must keep moving... NEXT...to get on to other drugs (maybe your local arthouse is showing ‘Trainspotting’ a great movie from Edinburgh..see it, and understand ‘the sweetness you've been crying for’: ‘every A-frame had your number on the wall’... Isn’t this just the Kid’s phone number, to get hold of his latest chemistry experiment? ...and finally the lyrics for HATWW, in case you can’t get to the Resource, are: Down at the Lido they welcome you with sausage and beer. Klaus and The Rooster have been there too, but lately he spends his time here. Hangin' with the Mayor and all his friends, and nobody cares. Where the sailor shuts out the sunrise, blacked out on the stairs. Knock twice, rap with your cane. Feels nice, you're out of the rain. We got your skinny girl, here at the Western World. Ruthy, we'll give you the silver key to open the red door. Lay down your Jackson and you will see the sweetness you've been cryin' for. In the night you hide from the madman you're longin' to be. But it all comes out on the inside eventually.[chorus][solo][refrain][chorus][solo and fade]. I think HATWW dates from way back before Hotel California (part of the Pretzel/Katy Lied era?.. Anyone know?) Still no word from Don & Walt about their tour to Australia... ‘It’s gonna be a long and lonely Winter without you’(..whatever happened to Sheena Easton?!)so keep talking chords, playlists, what to wear and how to get there. Vicarious, I know, but it's all we luckless pedestrians and low-rent friends have. I haven't been to see what the DanCam has to offer lately, any hot gossip?... Last I saw was 'little' Kawai erasing Donald's latest Arrangement. Richard with nothing to do but feed all the kangaroos
OK, I finally dug through all the old vinyl to find my "Hotel California". 'Twas 1976. As was HATWW.
Love all this lyric banter! Peg: I will look into Kamakiriad. It'll be my reward for getting through finals! You wouldn't believe some of the words I hear in songs. Composers would flip big time. Thanks for setting me straight on the Aja lyrics. PS- I love that your husband sings "get your big black cow and come over here!" What a guy! LucklessP: I triple dog dare ya! You can't take it with you, you know. RP Hi, Pioneer.
RubyPearl: I've got one for you: In I.G.Y., the background vocals near the end of the song are "more leisure time for artists everywhere". Until last week, I always thought it was "more Legionnaire for lawyers everywhere". You know, being sick, lawyers, what a beautiful world this will be if they're all sick, etc.. I got that album in 1982 or so, and all this time I'd sing along about sickly attorneys. To any attorneys out there: didn't mean to offend you... ...I believe I just got the goodbye look...
Okay, so I did check the SD Internet Resource, and it says..."the WORLD was HURLED" which brings us back to square... who posted those lyrics anyway?..kinda loses credibility when it spells out 'rikki don't LOOSE that number...George, I'm from outta town so you're going to have to fill me in...what exactly does one do at a Danvention? and would this be the first one or have their been others?...will there be food?...will there be zombies in the coco shell? what? thanks for the invite...I may just make it

oops!...sorry for that double post, I'm running through post-WWII wires, no fibre optics here at the Eastern world.....
Awesome summary of the many interpretations of HATWW, Lucky Henry. Seems those many sleepless nights in Washington's Crossing have impressed someone. By the way, work is now underway on the first prototypes of the Dan Decoder Ring, there'll be a garden in the back, hydoponic, of course. "It changed. It grew. And everybody Knew." Lovin' the Dream Set Lists. Almost finished with mine, and boy has it been tough to limit the set length to a point that wouldn't push W+D back into hiding for another twenty years. It happens to the best of sickies, ya know. If anyone has any suggestions for the Dan Decoder Ring, post em.
I notice everyone talking about lyrics and where to find them.John G's site is FABULOUS, no doubt. However, those lyrics can also be found right here on this site: Steely Dan Lyrics Page. I just finished an update that includes all but a half dozen songs from the Sun Mountain days. Coming soon....The Steely Dan Fan Survey. Stay tuned St. Al: Awhile back, I transcribed the lyrics for She Took A Little with Sugar and for Roaring of The Lamb. Is there a need for these at this point. I haven't checked the lyrics site like you suggested but if you're diggin' deep, then maybe this'll save you some time. Always loved those tunes. "I was taken with her showboat style, but too young to understand." Love the piano at the verrrry end of "Sugar".
StAl, Thanks for the kind mention of my site. Just as a clarification, I don't actually have lyrics listed on the Steely Dan Internet Resource, I have a link to an amazing site at the University of Wisconsin at Parkside, where lyrics for Steely Dan and hundreds of other bands can be found. The Parkside site just includes the "official" albums, so the work you've done, StAl, on your Steely Dan Lyrics Page is a more complete resource. Regards, John "I only know I must obey/ This feeling I can't explain away." P.S. Go Red Sox!
And the winners are .... I just had to do it. Here is a list of the 18 SD tunes most requested in this since May 7 ( the original Maj. Dude post). I took into account 20 set lists/requests. Not requested Turn that heart beat over again, Razor boy, The Boston rag, Pearl of the quarter, Barrytown, East St. Louis toodle-oo, Through with buzz, With a gun, Charlie freak, Monkey in your soul, Rose darling, Any world,Everything you did, Others. If I missed something, don't mention it. Mock. PD (these results include my picks... of course. only one per song!!)
A THOUSAND THANKs to St. AL, Pete Fogel, Joe Murtha, Hoops! McKay and the rest who nurture my DanAddiction. I can now converse only in DanSpeak and can only be understood by other Danatics. Soon it will cost me my job, but what the Hell. Sorry, I have nothing to offer on Barrytown (except the Pretzel Logic version was written a perfect fourth lower to accommodate Donald's voice--I believe the Early Years version is done in falsetto. Anyone know? And it's a real town on the Hudson. Thanks also, PEG and JOSIE for your accolades. I am only repeating what others have told me, and this information can easily be uncovered through the archives of Hoops! McKay's STEELY DAN DIGEST which is available through the GOPHER at: itchy.faa.uiuc.edu I don't know if the Pathfinder site has a connection to this. But there you will find the conversations of Danfans who REALLY know their Danshit. I'm sorry we haven't heard from some of them in a while (Lady Dan, HB, DJ and others). MAJOR DUDE: Try these out for size: Dbmin Ebmin (repeat 4x mp) Fmin Cmin (repeat 4x mf) G (key change): Amin7 Dmin Emin7 (repeat 3x) Dmin Emaj (key change): Fmin Cmin (repeat 2x) Crescendo: Db Eb C7 Fmin (I think) Dbmin Ebmin Cmin (repeat ff Dbmin Ebmin Cmin 2x) I'll give you the key sigs, lyrics, tempo changes and add-ins another time. I'd hate to have this one ripped off. Green Acres of my good intentions. Lucky Henry. See you all July 6th, 20th, 31st, August 2nd and 3rd and maybe July 23rd and 24th.
God, is this thing addicting.... LUCKLESS PEDESTRIAN: I liked your take on Barrytown, that they maybe were just trying to find something to rhyme with "World." and just let us try to figure it out. I think Walter once said in an interview the lyrics don't always mean something. One theory on KID CHARLEMAGNE is that it is about the Acid-to-go-mobile that Kesey and the Merry Pranksters used to ride around in during the heydays of the Grateful Dead. Apparently you could walk up and purchase hits from the technicolor motorhome...no doubt Timothy Leary was dishing them out, feeling like Jesus, rocking to Sugar Magnolia. Lucky henry. "...still an outlaw in their eyes..."
COngratulations to all the folks who've helped document all those years danomaniac years in dandom.
Anyone looking for tix to West Palm-am in touch w/pairs of 3rd row & 7th row center + pair of seats toward rear-any one interested in any combo of these Email.
Hi Gang! Hope all is well and, everything is going GREAT!! Have really enjoyed everyone's posting of their "dream set". I figure DF & WB will do a "new" set of their upcoming studio works which should be very exciting. Still composing my "dream set"--am leaving the country on Friday, May 17th--thank goodness-a "really needed" vacation. I am hoping to see the show in Tampa. I am still loking to trade my vinyl collection for the "elusive" set recordings of the "GauchO' outtakes "Second Arrangement" and, the 1993-94 set of "Live in St. Louis". Please e-mail me if you are interested in the "swap". Josie, I think it is GREAT you are wearing "teal"--have really enjoyed the "DanCam" pictures. Definitely two musical "genius" people at work and play. Thankyou, St Al for the excellent work you have done on this website--really makes us "old" DanFan appreciate you and, everyone else who listens to the Dan "religiously" on whatever equipment you might have--car, boat, headphones, home copnfigurations. Was disappointed I could not get the "Pathfinder" chat session a few weeks ago. Love & Peace Michael
Luckless, scurvy brothers and sisters My sincerest apologies re. 'World was Hurled' and being a smartarse... my download is from the Steely Dan Reader Program.. but I'm gratefull afor all lyrics and translations. 'Word was heard'is less obtuse and so I guess less likely.. this is what comes of browsing in my lunch hour. ...must go home and clean out my ears. After all I used to think it was "Get it on Kid Charlemagne"!(too much Marvin and Motown?)...and time I traded the old worn vinyl for the CD set. Lucky H, the Leary reference sounds plausible enough... though I wonder if D&W look in from time to time to have a good laugh at the latest scholastic interpretations. Humbly yours Richard & kangaroos
Superb topic! I guess that the music has a twofold effect on my life. For many years in my adult life I've turned to my collection to take the edge off a hard day, dance around the floor a bit and disappear into "a world of my own". It was the release of Fagen's Kamakiriad that really meant something more. On a whim I decided to give my father his own CD of the '93 release. Of course any 68 year old man would initially be skeptical,my father was no exception. But we made it to "The Florida Room" and we connected. It sounds mushy, perhaps a bit warm and fuzzy, but the relationship has been better than it ever was before. He looks really great in his "Steely Dan T-Shirt".
I was wondering why they never did, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, their biggest hit according to billboard on their last two tours. I would love to hear pretzel logic this year. What ever happened to David Palmer and Denny Dias ? I hope this question isn't too new.
I'm sure you all know the importance of a producer that works great with a band. So my obvious next question is, and i hope it isnt an old question, what happened to Gary Katz. Long live the dan.
Reagarding "Western World" (lay down your Jackson) What denomination of U.S. currency does Andrew Jackson appear on? Could it be that one was procuring the services of a prostitute with this currency?
To Dug: I suspect the reason they no longer play 'Rikki don't lose that number' is that they're sick of it. it's one of those great songs that's been ruined from too much airplay . Frankly, whenever the song comes up on the cd player I fastforward after a few seconds, as it starts to grate. (Although I can still play the skunk's solo note-for-note even after all these years) To Michael Packard: got your email, thanks....so you've actually lived in the PI eh? cool. thanks for the offer to tape SD material but I think I've got it covered from here..things have changed since you were here last. Do not come to Manila unless you want to deal with the ACTUAL low-life desperate characters that D&W so often write about...go straight to Boracay, which is just a great party island..powder-white sand...check out our rum--excellent, if I do say so myself ...strangel enough, coke and rum (as in,'lucy still drinks....) is my favorite drink. Tanduay 5 years: see if you can get it. Lucky Henry: what's the deal on that chord progression? Lastly, my 22-yr. old brother-in-law has decided to form his own SD cover band. Would it be asking too much to get this scurvy family's collective genius to come up with a name? toodles lp
Isn't Jackson on the twenty ($20) ? Anything more would be preposterous. Getting back to the earlier years lately, what with all this talk about the Dream Set List. Found the tape-from-bootleg album titled of Katy Lied outtakes which Betz made for me a few years back. This album is actually one of those moments of Dan-vergence: While at Syracuse Univ., I found a this bootleg album in Desert Shore Records. Naturally, I stashed it behind the Tubes albums for later retrieval. But it was gone a few days later. A few years later, Bobby K introduced me to a friend, Betz. We wandered in from the city of St. John's without a dime. Later I got a tape in the mail from Betz. He explained that he found it stashed in in an obsure place at the very same record store. How bout that for Dan stories!! By the way, thought you might find it interesting, maybe not, that right now, in this high school, they are conducting the first ever drug sweep using dogs. The police and three dogs. Up and down the corridors. Around student's bookbags. Brings to mind "With A Gun", "Kid Charlemagne". Never a dull moment in America's schools. If it wasn't for the interaction on this page, I'd call in sick till the rest of the year. Anyway, my original point: "Come Back Baby" from the "Early Years", has two kickin' guitar solos. Who's the genius? Lov the first lick of the second solo. "My old man never told me how'da ......" In fact there's many guitar licks on that album. Whaddayathink?
Lucky PEDESTRIAN: The chords were requested by MAJOR DUDE to give him something to work on before we meet tomorrow afternoon for my BIRTHDAY celebration. They're from a piece I wrote. That's all I can say, although MAJOR DUDE tells me he's working on ROYAL SCAM which also has a lot of minor chords, (according to Steely Dan Complete, anyway): Cmin7 Cmin6 Fmin7 Abmaj7 G7 Cmin7 Fmaj or something to that effect. Many great cover band names were proferred a couple of weeks ago, I believe. How 'bout Travellin' Minstrel Show, Parker's Band, The Raw Flame, The Live Wire, A Case of Aces, Life is Unreal, Incandescent Blowout, Oleanders, Kings, The Crimson Tide, etc......
Lucky Henry, In your opinion, what is the best Steely Dan song book available? I'd like to buy one for guitar/piano that has accurate chord progressions for all the songs we know and love. I'm outta commision for a few weeks for wrist surgury and thought I'd be trying to get the music together and start tinkering with it a little. Anyone else who has input on this subject is welcome to post here or e-mail me. Thanks...carful what you carry, cause the man is wise...
Midnight Cruiser: I don't have any Dan books, but Fagen's Nightfly book is really accurate. published by Cherry Lane Music Co.,inc. P.O. 430 Port Chester N.Y. 10573. You might still be able to find in a local music store as well. I sometimes wonder what happened to that flame....
"See the glory, (See the glory of) of the Royal Scam." Thanks for the info, Lucky Henry. See ya tomorrow. Laters. the Major.
I'm surprised to see so many people that want to hear songs from Catalyst/Sun Mountain/Early Years etc. Why would you want to hear these songs live when there are so many great songs that THEY released that we haven't heard yet? Let's face it, although it's good to have some early boots to listen to, 95% of these songs are crap. In fact, they are so bad, D&W are embarrassed that they were released, they are illegal, you know. Why would you want to hear "Come Back Baby", when we still haven't heard "Don't Take Me Alive"; or "Let George Do It" instead of "Gaucho"? Maybe some of you should go back and listen again to their officially released albums, and you'll see what I mean. Not Laters, Kinky.
This is a celebrity chain: My friends friend played with Jojje (George) Wadenius, who has played with Steely Dan. I played with my friend, therefore I have played with Steely Dan. Another friend of mine took Jojje (above) to his house after a gig in Sweden. I have also been taken for a ride, therefore I have been riding with Steely Dan. If you guys out there have any other links to the band, be sure NOT to mail me - you are crazy - get a hair-cut and a job!!! Best wishes, Morty the Mad Dog
Think it's n the beginning we recall that the word was heard; Barrytown people got to be from another world" with the idea that the guy in the song is saying that B'towners must be out of the loop bigtime because they hadn't heard this word, being from another world and all. It's the classic idea of negating another group(blacks, Jews, the unborn, gays, etc.)by reading them out of the human race. Or sumpin' like that. "Deacon Blues". When I was growing up in N.C., the student DJ at Wake Forest's WFDD-FM ("Wake Forest Demon Deacons" would often sign off with "Deacon Blues". Didn't understand the lyrics entirely(still don't), but I intuited that in the context the deej was trying to say: We're just a little school, not the next TCU or Vanderbilt. We might be wasting our time here, but let us get on with it. "They call Alabama the Crimson Tide; call me Deacon Blues".
Have any of you read "the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" by Tom Wolfe? That book will key you in about Kid Charlemagne. It was Owsley! Not Leary. Owsley went to L.A. on a dare and went alone! Everything in that song points towards Bear. This is a great page. I love the idea of best set list for the upcoming tour. I didn't see Walk Between the Raindrops (off Nightfly, duh) I dig that one ;) I also waited all my 28 years to see them at Starwood in Nashville 2 years ago. I called that day and got 14th row right in front of Fagen. Its good to have friends in the box office! ;) Does anyone have a tour list from 93? I have a hot clone of the Saratoga show from that tour. I just am unsure of the date and actual venue (looking for which led me here!) Also, anyone looking to trade dats of SD, please get in touch. I have *MANY* hour of lots of bands to trade for hot tapes of the DAN. Please email me at vertic8@aol.com. Any help appreciated. I wish SD was coming to Utah this year! peace Alfred
Luckless et al. Me again... splayed my ears on the vinyl last night and it sounds like 'in the beginning the word was hurled' (where we started right?)... Someone with real ears and a less than overloved copy please settle this once and for all. Just trying to find that opening sequence for all you lucky ones this summer and sometime around 4am with my restless 6 month old son I remembered one of my copies of Do it Again which used to stick on the intro... An extended version of that sure would be a great way to get even the most geriatric Dan fan of his or her seat and into the groove (it's where the guys came in after all). ...and after Do it Again, Show Business Kids has to be next. Also had 11 Tracks of Whack on last night. Anyone know why it's taken Walter so long to realise what a great voice he has... maybe 'Down in the Bottom' could be in the set. Ever wondered what the Dan would have been if David Palmer had done all the vocals? Richard & kangaroos
Woooonnnnderrful Page!! I made you a link on my page (ok with you)??? Come sign my guestbook too?? I have "Mega" links to Classic 60's pages! Thanks for such a Very Good Page. "Bout time for somthing as good as this. I will stay posted! :) :) Pammi http://members.tripod.com/~Pammi/pammi.htm
I must say I'm thrilled to be here (as a newbie I'm thrilled to be anywhere). Cool page, this. Consider it Bookmarked. The strangest place I've heard Steeley Dan was in the middle of the Indian Ocean on the USS Constellation, on our way to Australia. (Sounds just as good Down Under) Some Australians have actually heard of The Dan, but the only dude who I know actually listens to the music is an Aborigional "Tribesman". Says it's the only "White" music he can connect to. "Double Helix in the Sky Tonight...Throw out the Hardware, Let's Do It Right."
Wow, Kinky!?! Why so negative? "I can't function, honey, when you run me down." Mock Turtle: great synthesis, keep it coming. One hazard, though. I enjoy the set lists for how the arrangement of tunes might sound, and for what the set reveals about the arranger. However, your analysis indicates considerable interest in the Royal Scam album and less interest in much of Pretzel Logic. Interesting. Also, limiting the list to top 18 requests was an excellent use of Dan-precedent. ******************** Still hoping for some info on the number of tunes the Dan played during other tour dates. Was it about 18 or + or - ? How 'bout it? ******************** ".... we go out to lunch with some Jamaican dude...." (Really) Laters. Maj. Dude
At the Garden that Zingg rascal, well, he should be held for observation. At Miami Arena, Fagen looked like bad Jeff Goldblum. I can't figure out the chords to the beginning to Your Gold Teeth II. Anyone? Nice paper, y'all. GbMaj7 Ab6 DMaj9-5 DbMaj-5 Cmaj9 I run to you bunky
KINKY: You have a point that the Catalyst songs are a TAD unpolished and perhaps a bit off-key. But you gotta wonder what they could do if they gave songs like "A Little With Sugar" a fighting chance... I don't think anyone's asking Don+Walt to play these songs even CLOSE to what we hear them on the CD, we'd like to hear what they can do with the cuts NOW. Some of those trashy morsels still got some lyrics, and a good start to some progressions... ...and, god help me, the entire "stinky" collection GROWS on ya. sheesh, I'm in a big SD rut... ST. AL: Excellent tapes, man. "I used to be a W, now I'm an M..." rudy
Just a quick question. Why only (1) backup singer this time around?? I find myself tuning in on "The Angels" just as much as Don,and Walt. If you have a copy of AIA, listen close to Babylon Sisters. When those uh-huh chicks wail out "Babylon Sisters, Shake It", the crowd goes nuts!! Hey man, just a thought. when the sidewalks are safe for the little guys.....
Lucky Henry - Happy Birthday! Johnny's Playroon - guess the guys will have to sing backup this time. Guess they won't be doing Babylon Sisters, huh?
To Kinky: You raised a valid question, in a kinda sand&guts way. So I got out my Old Regime and Roaring of the Lamb and cleaned housed while I listened. (house was a mess- it'll take a couple more cds) Anyway, these songs are full of personality and they're a lot of fun. Rudeeeee is right - they grow on ya'. What they lack in polish they make up for in essence of heart. I always wonder what these would sound like if WB&DF produced these now? Oh, the things they could do with Don't Let Me In or Mock Turtle! They can leave A Little With Sugar the way it is. Just think of the possibilities! I am not saying you're wrong. I am just trying to answer your question. And I love it when you're grouchy. Don't know why, though. Try to design a postcard from your mind. Adios RP Maj.Dude: Cool address!
"How's my little girl?" . . . "Slide into decadence or healing regression?" Digging out from under the pile of work and school. . .now getting caught up on the things that are *really* important. It amazes me that there are now so many ready sources for all things Dan. It wasn't so long ago that you had to go out and look for it, and look hard. For awhile there in the pre-Metal Leg Eighties, Fagen's columns in Premiere magazine were the only new semi-Steely material we had to look forward to, and you bet I cherished them. On this tour, along with the new songs and the old favorites, I'd be interested in hearing a little more juvenilia they played in concert way back when but never officially released on disc, like *All Too Mobile Home*. And as long as they're playing songs we haven't heard before, how about adding *The Second Arrangement* to the set list? Kinky, I agree that I'd rather hear "Don't Take Me Alive" or "Gaucho" than "Come Back Baby" or "Let George Do It." Overall, the early demos aren't as strong as the official releases, although after hearing the differences between the demos of "Barrytown" and "Brooklyn" and the versions that were released, I wonder how a few of those other demos would have sounded with the full studio treatment. See you at the Sprangle. . . "How's my little girl?" . . . "Slide into decadence or healing regression?"
Listen to My Rival through headphones, preferably the MFSL version and you can hear voices saying "purple .." something or other in the background during the intro, a half second or so before the opening verse. Really!!
Hank Silvers -- that S.Dan cover band in San Diego plays "Mobile Home". Cool song! I bet the real Steely Dan could do it on tour this summer without female backup singers.
Johnny's Playroom raises a good point: Why only one backup singer when much of the power of an SD tune has to do with the rousing female chorus. Listen again to 'My Old School', or 'Pretzel Logic' or almost any song actually, now that I think about it. Anyone have an idea on D&W's motivations here?
Why not have Micheal McDonald back too!TIX PREVIOUSLY REFERENCED ARE GONE!It's amazing how many Dan fans are hitting multiple shows.I would say either have the chorus girls back or let's add that "third guitarist"!
Some of the references to guadalajara won't do (My Old School) is about the time WB was studing in that mexican city. Does anybody has a story about it? What is the meaning of Las Guages in Show Biz Quids? Finally, where can I call from Mexico to get a good tickets in Irvine Cal. thanks gauchos amigos.
To Midnight Cruiser: I have on loan in my possession a copy of the music book entitled "THE BEST OF STEELY DAN original scores for vocals, solo guitar, solo keyboard, synthesizer, keyboards, bass, percussion and drums" (there are horn parts, too).... so far we only play one tune...Deacon Blues...and it seems to be accurately transcribed. This book contains Aja, Black Friday, Deacon Blues, Do It Again, Hey Nineteen, Kid Charlemagne, My Old School, Peg, Reelin' In The Years, and Rikki Don't Lose That Number... killer contents, ya can't go wrong with a playlist like that!!! I suspect this is a collection of "official" transcriptions by the record company... each title page has a copyright from the year they came out... there are several music companies involved, however, all "rights administered by MCA MUSIC PUBLISHING, A Division of MCA INC., New York, NY 10019" Good luck in your search for sheet music...but you should really concentrate on figuring this stuff out yourself... the ability to hear, then play is something many people can only dream of... the funny thing about it is that it is an acquired skill... practice, practice, practice!!! If you can learn to transcribe the DAN then you can transcribe almost anything you want!!!! I've seen the NIGHTFLY songbook and it appears to be an official record company sanctioned publication. We play THE GOODBYE LOOK and it is written as it sounds on the disc. I recommend it! Regarding the size of the band for SUMMER 96... I am reminded of the 93 tour when DF introduced Warren Bernhardt as the "band leader"... maybe I'm reading too much into that remark, but... it is one helluva task to assemble an ensemble, rearrange decades old masterpieces, write new ones, and then prepare sheet music for each piece (not necessarily in that order)... perhaps we should examine this from the perspective of a (pardon the expresion) lean, mean, fighting machine! Fewer soloists, longer solos, shorter songs, more songs per set, more listening pleasure..... I'll terminate the rant here! Don't take me alive! Doc
I'd be willing to bet that tha announced touring group may grow in size. It could be that at press time the backup vocal lineup was not yet set in stone. If this was the intended final decision this may be re-evaluated after the initial rehearsals. You are right in recognizing the importance of the vocal backup arrangements. I would go one further and say DONT MESS WITH THE horn arrangements. Don has recently been more active in the composition of all horn arrangements (last couple albums), they are the best ever! Here's a thought: maybe D & W are gravitating toward an unplugged format (ever so slowly). And maybe tour by tour the musicians are gradually being eliminated as the songs are rearranged. Some day it may just be D & W along with a bongo player. ....drivin like a fool out to hackensack, drinkin his dinner from a paper sack......
Considering their general attitude to try not to fall into any fashion trend (except for letting a major corporation handle their online image), I wouldn't think they would fall in that "unplugged" cliche with everyone else on the planet. But then again, let's consider their motives for touring once more... TGIF! rudyrudyrudy
El Rudyo: thanks for the many highly entertaining posts. Still trying to figure out where the quote, "go outside and smoke myself a J", came from. Don't tell me, I enjoy the torment. Are you stil working on Set 2? Lucky Henry: just wanted to let you know that I'll be stopping at the harware store for a 99-cent roll of glow-in-the-dark tape. If I tape a big, reflective "X" on my guitar case, maybe that'll prevent any further wipe-outs that take out your keys. Glad everything still worked. You were smokin, scurvy brother! Re: Old stuff in the dream set: Well. I'd like to hear it all, but I got favorites too. Its fun to listen to versions of Brooklyn, Everyones Gone To the Movies, Parker's Band, Barrytown. Are you into those, Kink? "....By the blackened wall he does it all He thinks he's died and gone to heaven. Now the tale is told by the old man back home he reads the letter..." Have a Steely weekend. See the glory... the Major
Howdy! Need your help. I'm working on a survey form. Wondering if anyone would be interested in taking it? It is your basic Steely Dan type survey, like "Whats your favorite album", fav songs, etc... I'm trying to test it out. If anyone is interested, click on the link below and you'll be magically transported..... StAl
Steve Cox and M.D. Doc Kelley: Thanks for the input on my question about the music. Steve....I'll be looking for the book from Cherry Lane Publishing.....Doc Kelley...I'm workin' on it but I'd love to have a copy of that sheet music you're got...surely you've copied it? and the time goes by...and the time goes by...sometimes it goes so slowly...you know a man could cry.....
'Dude: Remember the 4 stages of inebriation we once discussed? Inception, Stabilization, Ineption, Irrecollection. To this I'd like to add a fifth: Regurgitation. I hit 'em all, and I thank you for driving all the way over to help. A great 35th for me starting with hearing New Frontier at my local supermarket. They're taking me out to lunch today, so I gotta go. It's party time.
Lucky for you, Henry!! Consider it added. When did we make up those stages? Remember that tix go on sale tomorrow, Sat. for the Garden State Arts Center Shows. See ya'll there. ".... any world that I'm welcome to is better than the one I come from."
To StAl: love the guestbook... thanx for the hit info... regarding your survey, you could ask: 1) how long have you liked SD? 2) how many albums/CD's do you own? 3) have you ever seen them perform in person? Typical demo info... married, # kids, income, etc. also...I refuse to list 5 least favorite SD tunes because it's sacreligious!!! Also you might include space for comments at the bottom of the survey page; also a couple of links might be OK... KEEP IT UP!! Doc
St. Al: I think you got "Mock Turtle's Song" listed twice, dude... Otherwise, I think it's good, could use a graphic, though... Major Dude: still thinking on the second set. HINT on the quote: it's NOT from the Dan. It IS from the 70s. (left side yell) ROO...(right side yell) DEE!
I have a Donald Fagen horror story I hope my fellow Dan fans never have to share. While cruising the local Wal-Mart electronics department the other day, I stumbled upon the CD cutout discount bin, and lo and behold, what should I find in it but "Kamakiriad"! In the cutout bin? For $5.96? Our hero Donald, relegated to the cut-rate music morgue? Yes, I'm afraid so. There nestled amongst the Greatest Hits of the 60's and Nature's Mood Music and a hundred washed-up country acts were not one, but two copies of the Donald's latest solo release. I was shocked and appalled! How could the nation's largest retailer treat our hero so shabbily? This is an outrage! Don't let this happen again! Insist on only first-quality SD material! Encourage your friends to do likewise. Let the word be hurled from Barrytown to the Custerdome, no cut-out Dan! Thanks for your time and attention. "Sure, he's a Jolly Roger, until he answers for his crime."
Rudy: You are absolutely right about the "unplugged" theory. However, being a Dan Fan, I of coarse meant this in a factitious way,(tip off: the bongo player). Sure, they may need the bucks but I could never imagine this "unplugged" gig ever happening. Thanks for responding, most of my posts are too boring to elicit any responses. ...wheel turnin round and round....Do it again
Q, CONNIE LEE, et.Dan-al.: I second the vote for Kathy, Brenda and Diane. I just can't see Cornelius backing up vocals on Babylon Sisters and moving his butt around like they did. Somehow I just don't think it would be the same. (Nothing personal, Corn) And without Bill Ware I guess we can forget about another flawless Aja. I was mesmerized watching him play. How 'bout a surprise guest appearance by Michael McDonald to sing Pretzel Logic, or by Dias (who appeared with them on stage at the Greek Theatre in L.A. a couple years back, didn't he?)...Dias enters stage left and they break into a Steely rendition of This All Too Mobile Home... ALFRED M.: Thanks for the Tom Wolfe book reference. You're right about it, of course. It's next on my list. "...the man is wise..."
To those of you who want to hear SD unplugged, it's already happened (well at least half of it). In '90 or '91 Donald was at the Bottomline in NYC with a bunch of singer/songwriters telling tales of how the songs were written and then performing them. Along with Donald, Jimmy Vivino, guitarist on the Conan O'Brien show, played acoustic. The two of them played Black Friday, Home at Last, and a few others I can't remember. MAJ. DUDE: I love the old stuff, as a matter of fact, I like everything they did except for most of the pre-SD tunes, they obviously feel the same. ST. AL: Great idea for the survey, in fact I have something to add. I motion that your next survey should be about whether this board should be kept in italics, frankly, it makes me dizzy.
Ok! I fixed it. I have been noticing more and more people are using HTML in this page. Just remember to close those containers folks.... To Midnight Cruiser: A quote from one of my favorite movies (A Fish Called Wanda) "APOLOGIZE!!!" Remember John Clease.....hanging.....upside-down.....FROM A VERY TALL WINDOW?{bfg} Otto
Well I had to take it , even though I'm from NO, La........ It's looks like the closest D+W are coming to the Big Easy (The Quarter ; Pearl) , is Tampa. I missed the last tour, but I'm gassing up my KAMAKIRIAD and heading east. Does anyone know who's handling tickets !!!!! I've already check Ticketmaster. NOT
St. Al... Did I forget to close something? If so, I APOLOGIZE!!! I was half asleep on my previous post...could it have been the italics? It won't happen again...scout's honor...not that I was ever a scout but I try to be tidy and clean up after myself... Not that this has any real relevance but I lived up to my name tonight...washed the car, dropped the top and went for a Midnight Cruise...just me and "A Decade of"...the only way it can get any better will happen on July 7th...see ya.
Michael A., I would'nt presume to know what W+D's motives are other than maybe "Perfection and Grace", but I speculate that they don't "need the bucks" with 30 plus tunes in heavy rotation on Musak. Though this glut of mediocre song arrangements is bludgeoning my sensitive Steely Dan ears (I work in retail), I can only hope the $$ will allow them the freedom to continue creating the good stuff! b.c.
Michael A: still, though, I CAN see only a bongo, and the Dan dressed in black just sitting there upstage, doing a Beat lyric reading thing...couldn't do it in an ampitheatre, you'd ruin the mood... an unplugged session like that could probably work as a small SoHo gig. normal folks doing business in the normal way... rudy
I got up at 6:30 this morning to get to the Garden State Arts Center for the 8:00AM ticket sales opening. People with wristbands had priority & they said it would take several hours just to process the wristband people. Theuy were there for most summer shows, not just SD. So I left & paid $55 per ticket at Ticketbastard. Oh well, only for the Dan.
Let's give these guys some credit, they know what they're doing with the band set up! The same band yesr after year would get tremendously boring and repetitious for them, as well as us. Change is good, it keeps people aware. Also, if they were to add anyone, I would hope that it would be Mindy, who is much more exciting then Diane Garisto and her comrades. Unplugged?? That's frightening. This page is getting a little boring.
Hey Donald & Walter, I am really looking forward to seeing you again this year in Irvine. Saw you three times in Southern Cal last year and really enjoyed it. Two requests for this years show in Irvine. First, would love to hear you play "Brain Tap Shuffle". I've got alot of your old recordings andf always wonder why you haven't redone this song on some of your newer records. Second, when you do play it in Irvine, please dedicate to my 2 year old daughter Amy, she loves you too. In fact, we played alot of Steely Dan when Mindy was pregnant and we brought several of your CD's to the delivery room. Keep up the great tunes, we all need them. The Kneepkens P.S. Whatever happened to Denny Dias?
HEy check out ASCAP on line. Weird songs registered by our boys: Eye Know, Gamine j me sens Gamine, Runnin Child, Trapped into darkness, and more. Somebody buy me a Ben & Jerrys Peacepop at the Hartford show! yeah Fogel rules!jk
Random thoughts... On the drive in to the rock quarry this morning, my mind began to drift, as it often does, toward the prospect of another great summer. The stimulus for this brooding was emanating from my cheap mid-range Radio Shack car speakers in the form of a jokey blues, recalling the lure of East, indeed, the hubris of hippies. No sooner had I recovered from this suspension in reality when I was suddenly and inexplicably thrust back into another healing regression... This time in the form of a quartal harmony employing minimalist lyrics to describe a picaresque, suave criminal with power over women. Upon closer inspection though, this arch-pop ditty turns out to be nothing more than an altered blues. How can I be blamed for these unrestrained musings? To think that in just (2) short months I'll be enjoying an evening of reclaimed juvenilia complete with neat solos by W.B., Bumpus, Krantz... To borrow a phrase... I live, as if in a state of equilibrium. Joe M.
Zombie: Won't you sign out stranger? (just josh'in ya) SD HAS had a different lineup each of the last two tours. I don't think anyone is diminishing, in any way, the wisdom or vision set forth by these guys. I think you can shuttle players through the funnel AND rearrange the tunes to maintain interest. All I'am saying is that the foundational musical parts or elements be preserved. This would include the sonic power of the backup vocals and richness of the brass section. It's just an opinion and not an attack on the sanctity of the religion as we know it. As for starting the "unplugged" discussion/debacle, I think I made it clear that my comments were sarcastic in nature and not intended for human consumption. As for the boredom you are experiencing, I think you'll get over it. Best regards...till next time.
Hey!
There IS a race of men in the trees! Who out there is for tough legislation?
Before there was "unplugged", musicians DID perform their songs in a stripped-down arrangement, didn't they? Who better to perform in this manner, but D+W, for they are pretty competent musicians. It'd be great to let the piano and bass carry their vocals. DAVE S: Yes I too have a TicketBastard story from Saturday. But all in all, some yang gave out wrong information. "... normal people doing business the normal way..." Settling for lawn seats at Garden State Arts and Camden. $55 ? No way. I'll be slipping by the guards in my stealth-suit. " .. we go out to lunch with some Jamaican dude...."
I'm Lester the, HELLO...., anyone out there, FLORIDA ROOM.......? I've called everyone down there, TM (TB), Stadium.....Who, Steely, Stills, Nash? Pollstar says its confirmed and tickets went on sale 4-27-96. Who has them !!! We are up to seven , come on daddy get in lets go! come on daddy.
Fear not, MAJOR DUDE...I have pavilion seats in both locations. Though at 60 bucks a shot for the GSAC I only bought one (for the 23rd), and am down to the last piaster I can borrow. KNEEPKENS: Last I heard Dias had a recording company in L.A. St. AL: Keep up the great work, Like the new graphic at the beginning of the page. "..eternally young..."
Maj.Dude: When you're slipping by the guards in your stealth suit, don't forget your pack of Footos - just in case.
Cuervo Gold: I think it is a mix between "Las Vegas" and "Lost Wages" What's all this crap about "unplugged" Some more Morty The Mad Dog logic : Morty is a human and humans have to shit, therefore Morty is full of shit!! (I think I got it) Mock Turtle
heynewyorkerswaynekranzisplayingatthe55baronchristopherstreetinthevillagetoniteyesi'llbethere.
Why doesn't anyone mention the New York Rock and Soul Revue? (Giant Records) It's got some great tracks, including Mike McDonald giving it up once again (he's the shit). I caught SD in Atlanta a couple of years ago. I would like tickets to the Portland show but right now I'm in Tallahassee, FL!!!
Hey does'nt anyone get on the chat channel? Every time I get on there is no one there at all. It's an easy download. We need to pick a time-I want to talk to you all. Sorry I hav'nt posted in soooo long -time out of mind-plus I've been really busy lately. How are all of my old friends: Ruby Baby, M.D. Doc Kelly, Steve Cox, Rex Cox, and the rest of my scurvy brothers and sisters, I've missed you all. Im ready for the summer tour, can't wait. Man every time I get here I see a lot of new entries. It's catching on. Dan Steele. Outre' Danie'l. STEELT DAN. It's growing Keep the brotherhood, Pioneer P.S.>>>>>picked up all old records yesterday except for countdown-still looking for it.
PIONEER: I can never find anyone at the chat site either! WHADDUP LIKE DAT? I don't even know if the damn thing is working. St.Al: Did Pathfinder say all was cool at the chat site? I'd love to talk to you li'l purty ones....whateva...there's no disbelief to suspend...
Pioneer: for some of us idiots, it's not that simple to download. I tried twice, and can't quite figure it out. Oh well, what would I have to offer other than fashion tips?
Hey DanFans! I am trying to compile SD geographical references (ie. "on the water down in New Orleans", "at the foot of Mount Belzoni", "I left my old man back in Oregon...", etc. The more obscure, the better. I would ultimately like to make a set with the tunes. Help me out.... " since May, there's trouble most every night..."
To C.Moore: being a geog major myself, I'm trying to figure out why I didn't think to do the same thing... one question: on what scale are you requesting references? local places like "in Rudy's" or "down to Greene Street" (BLACK COW from AJA)?? To A Pioneer: I still don't have those Sandstone tix in hand... To Midnight Cruiser: I have not forgotten you! These things must be handled delicately... To everybody else: Howdy... do you suppose we could arrive at some consensus as to what the encore set should be??? My pix: Don't take me alive, My old school and Aja; in that order! Also, SOMEBODY MUST POST THE ACTUAL PLAYLIST AFTER THE FIRST SHOW!!!! OK???? Toodles, DOC
To M.D. Doc Kelly I am a Geography major too, if you couldn't guess. I guess we could start with cities or larger places and work our way down. I was thinking of cities and countries specifically when I started, but we could expand unless it gets too tedious. If someone knows the place of the street or whatever...great! To all: Please folks, list the song as well or I'll be driving myself crazy trying to figure them out, especially the more obscure the reference is. After we compile a list of general places we can work our way down to bars, or restaraunts (ie. Mr Chows). Oh here's an afterthought...did anyone know that in a William Gibson book (I believe it was Nueromancer), he wrote about a bar called the Gentleman Loser!! It was only a one line reference, but I thought it was cool. Later, "ohhhhhhhh..MIAMI!"
So here we are, abbreviating "Can't buy a thrill" as CBAT, etc. If only Don had called the car the Kamapiri, the album would have been titled "Kamapiriad" and we could just abbreviate it as ",." July 6th, Va Beach. Row G seat 22. Wave to me. "Drive into springtime..."
mister expanding: I usually try to abbreviate longer titles becaus I hate to mispel wordz; why lok for truble mispeling the Dan? What if Don liked to drink Italian liquors instead of Scotch Whiskey all night long....he could've driven a Kampari and soda... It's tough to chat when you're the only one there for about five seconds (total time elapsed before I start to feel silly being in a chat area by myself and leave)....what if everyone who could, just HANG there for a little longer...perhaps we'd overlap embarrassing episodes of solitude and actually MEET. Posting a certain time to meet CAN smack of something you'd read in the bathroom stall... ...so I'll just...hang...for a while at the Chat room....now.rudy.
CMoore: A couple more references for your collection. "You'd go to L.A. on a dare and you'd go it alone" (Kid Charlemagne) "There ain't nothing in Chicago for a monkey woman to do." (Your Gold Teeth) "Daddy don't live in that New York City no more." (Daddy Don't Live in that New York City No More) "Driving like a fool out to Hackensack." (Same song) "Stranded in Red Hook, I check in my black book for anybody's cave." (Dog Eat Dog) "Kansas City born and growin'." (Parker's Band) That's all I can come up with at the moment. I'm sure other members of Dandom can help with others. Good Luck! "When Black Friday falls I'll be on that hill, you know I will."
WOW! Can't believe I just spent the last hour browsing through all the SD stuff. It's been fun. Catch ya' later after I get some work done at the office. Aloha.
Cuervo: On Show Biz kids, the chorus talks about 'Lost Wages', slang for Las Vegas. Actually, that's one of the songs that's most held its' timeliness, IMHO. I remember when they started talking about the 'brat pack' in hollywood, I immediately thought of 'Show Biz Kids'... the latest Charlie Sheen revelations, and what happened to River Phoenix, also bring it to mind.
,. hahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahah
M.D. Kelly-will accomadate on first show playlist-I think now that we've decided what they should play I guess it's time to decide what they're going to wear.
What-er-they-gonna-wear??? well, of course... Bad sneakers, shapow(sp?) of doom, hearing aids, pumps and pearls, spangled leather ponchos, elevator shoes and/or no socks and shoes... to name just a few... JM
"in the corner of my eye, I saw you in Rudy's, you were very high..."
Hey Pioneer, how's it goin' pard? Hi Josie, Steve Cox, St. Al, Peg, and even you Kinky! I'm still here, but since summer weather is here now, I'm trying to stay outside as much as I can. I gotta log on to the chat channel though, if I can just remember to do it. Is it Sunday nights that everyone gets together on it? Is mIRC all I need, or do I need a special connection? Somebody please update me. I work as a pilot, and it always seems I'm on a charter or something on the weekends, so when I get home, I usually just want hit the rack and sleep for about twenty hours. Hope all is well in Danland.
Joe Murtha: Great wardrobe report!! I truly fell off my chair in laughter. Keep it up! Best regards...
Ride, Captain, Ride...................................
Re: wardrobe And of course they ain't never gonna do it without the fez on.
While you're assembling a list of geographical references, why not try to arrange them in a manner which allows one (and all) to tour America's Dan-mentions. For example: Beginning in NYC, drivin like a fool down to Hackensack, swing by Annandale, to Chicago, the city of Saint Johns (without a dime), etc.... But consider: will Mizar 5, & Kizmar be included? How? Where? And, of, course, we'll be driving a Kamakiri or a Stone Piano, "calvary bound, rollin' along with the top down." I'm gonna have fun with this one. Should take me into June, no problem. MD Doc Kelly: Is your e-mail address close to my address or is it on the other side of cyberspace? Lucky Henry: can't find the index card with my dreamset list. Did I leave it at your place? At the Maple Glen? Or at "the grotto, in the greasy chair"? I'd love to post it, but CAN'T FIND IT. "Dance on the bones till the girls say when."
Here’s one way of listing some of the many Dan locales: BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY: HOME AT LAST: SO FAR FROM HERE: For best results observe the R.I.A.A. curve. . .
To Major Dude: above address is the real thing... a professional Jayhawker (transcript spans 22 yrs)... couldn't live anywhere else but a small college town!!! To Midnight Cruiser: hope to make a move this weekend when the place is empty... To C.Moore: all from Royal Scam: San Francisco & LA (Kid Char.); Hollywood (Caves of Altamira); Oregon (redundant, I know); the U.S.A. (Haitian Divorce); St. John & New York City (Royal Scam)... no more time... See y'all later, Doc
To everyone.....thanks for the references, I'm getting all of them. Don't have time to chat now but keep them coming. MD Doc K- great idea, we can compile a Dan Tour list of references...one qeustion? Do we include cyberspace references?? Why not! We can use a GIS to make a map!!! Gotta run, C "Brooklyn owes the charmer under me...."
To all the Major Dudes in Virginia Beach: Need tix to the July 6 show. Any seat will be tremendous but specifically looking for two close to the stage. And to the two Third World Men: Cool web page. To Everyone: Don't let them take you alive. Kill them first! Peace. Big Harv.
Love the music. Like the information. Lose the attitude. Hubris is the only sin.
To: Kinky To Kinky: "Come Back Baby", "Yellow Peril", "Let George Do It" and those early songs are brilliant! Just think of the musical context in which they were written - psychadelia, etc. Nobody was writing stuff like that then - I think that it was one of Lieber and Stoller who compared their early stuff to Brecht. Don't rubbish a seminal talent.
MD DOC KELLY a Jayhawk!? How 'bout that Syracuse/Kansas game in the West regional Finals this year? Whew!! 'DUDE: Do not have your setlist but am more than willing to help reconstruct it. Signing out, LUCKY HENRY, from County Cook to Baltimore...Bakersfield to ElCindor (?)..I would guess she's in Detroit. Did anyone mention Kansas City (born and growing..you won't believe what the boys are blowin'...
Got my ticket to that wheel in space - the SD Web site is a very cool place! How 'bout these for location references: They're landing on the Jersey beaches (Tomorrow's Girls) Can you show me the shine on your Japan, the sparkle in your China (Bodhisattva) BTW, I purchased a copy of the instructional video that Donald did with Warren Bernhardt. It has inspired me to become reacquainted with my piano after many years - Thanks, Don!!! We can't wait to see all of our Scurvy Brothers and Babylon Sisters at Great Woods, MA on July 26th. "What a beautiful world this will be".
I love all the geographical refs! I got out of geography all during high school. I regret that, you know! What about Biscayne Bay, where the Cuban gentlemen sleep all day? That's from one of my fav songs. To Pioneer: Do you mean that you can't find your own Countdown or you want to buy a Countdown? My kids gave me old records (vinyl) for my birthday: Royal Scam, Countdown, CBAT, Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic! I know where to get it all. PS - what about Sun Mountain? Is it a real place? Bye- RP
Don + Walt alive in Europe. Come on guys, the time is ripe for some great shows in London! 'Surf and/or die' Will Cruttenden
WOW!!!!! GREAT LOOKIN' VISUALS AND SET-UP. TO EVERYONE WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE, WAY TO GO! I'M TOO STUNNED TO TYPE. WILL TRY LATER. LOVE THE CONCEPT, RUDY, LOVE IT. CORNER BOOTH, VIRTUAL CAT. LOVE IT.
Very whacky site, ya'll. Glad to know there are others (although it seems at least a few of you have gone a bit too far over the edge of adoration -- :) My own fanatical devotion of Steely Dan arrises from an unending appetite for mysterious beauty. With that in mind, for lean muscularity coupled with soulful heartache, for lyrical compression leading to cinematic hallucination in the listener, and for daring self- reference combined with an arrangement that allows a five piece to produce orchestral effects, the winner of Best Steely Dan Song is (envelope, please....) "Third World Man." Followed closely for second by everything else (we're talking just a few tenths of a voting point, here). Thanks for the buzz, cuz. It feels so good on you. James E. "Jazz" Bordner Gravity Music "Tunes so heavy, there oughta be a law."
I'm in heaven, but is there anyone here with me (rhet.)? Exposed as an infant to a vivid cocktail of Coltrane and SD, I can no longer remember my last contact with a fellow DanFan. (other then my girlfirend [heh, heh]) Let me know if you're there over here - and vice versa. (sorry, hi! to will@brookes) I've always wanted something from Bay networks.... Email addresses: pearl@thequarter ????? Ta-Ta
St.Al: Love the new look of the page! You a BAD MickeyFickey! This site is damn near as pretty as JazzCentralStation (www.jazzcentralstation.com) check it out. Glad you're back, Rex Cox. Someone keep us posted about Pathfinder Chat. Seems a shame not to use it if it can be made to work. Later y'all...gotta have some "szechuan dumplings"...
Hey now! As many of you have noticed there have been some changes around here. I hope you feel the same way I do about them. The Banyan site was getting rather stale. Because of this (and the fact I have no scanner or other arteest type things) I was considering hanging it up after the summer tour was over, and the band decided on their own guestbook. That is until "Rudy" came along. The images you see sprinkled about this site have been created by this very talented individual. Please everybody, give Rudy a hand! Some other things...Mock Turtle had an excellent idea. He suggested turning the survey format into a contest form. The way this will work is simple. I will create a form in which you try to guess the setlist the band will use on this summers tour. The individual who guesses closest will win a CD (or something better, but, more on that later). THe difficulty here is that the band will be playing new material(?), so there are some kinks to work out of the idea. If you have something to add, please let me know. Suffice to say, there will be some sort of contest. I would also like to post each night setlist on the site. Look for a form for this as well. Lastly, before I take a much needed HTML break, To Big Harv, or anyone else, is Va Beach sold out? If so please let us know. I checked TB's site last night and none of the shows were sold out yet? Any additional info would be appreciated. Now, I need to get my ass to work.... stal, i am speechless. i love the new changes. i dig it. i have to admit it was a little scary at first, but due to the fact that donald and walt are sleek, perfectionists - i think it is rather appropriate. -> like a gangster on the run, danke schön, Major Dude, Herr Cox, der Nightfly. mister bordner: scary what a rabid dan fan can do, left alone with a few albums, a 'puter and several other...accoutrements, wouldn't you say? the REAL thanks goes to StAl for giving an unknown artist a try. and (i hope) we're not done yet... and while we're at it, let's try to remember to support our local artists: do a gallery opening, museum, gig, whatever! Is good for you, no? rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrudy.
I'm really losing it. As an assignment for my computer/keyboarding students, I had them format a table of contents page and key in all the titles of dan songs that appear in "Steely Dan Complete" songbook that Lucky Henry was gracious enough to provide many moons ago. Being youngsters, they got a kick out of titles like Pretzel Logic, and especially, Monkey In Your Soul!! Many wondered about what is a Bod - e - sot - va ? And why doesn't daddy live in that NYC anymore? A few knew some of the songs, including one "skinny girl" that said her favorite song is "Rikki". She gets an "A+". It was something they had fun with, ya know? See ya after the long weekend. If you're near Philadelphia over the weekend, check out the Blues-Jam Festival on Penns Landing. It's a combination blues artists and cajun artists Sat thru Monday. Chris Duarte Group on Sunday nite. I'll be there, in my "greasy chair, with the charlie and the lotion and the kinky hair." Maybe you'll make it after all, Lucky Henry. "and the milkman screamed and pointed up at the sky....." Laters. the Major.
TO Ian in London: OK, I'll defend myself again for the last time. I'm sure Lieber and Stoller were talking about SD's OFFICIALLY released early records, aka CBAT and Countdown. I, personally, love those albums too, but in D&W's own words, the pre SD stuff was "juvenile", I just agree with them. (No matter how much acid people were dropping back then, it still wasn't that good.) ST. Al: After seeing many shows on the last two tours, at about the third gig, the setlist does not change, except for maybe playing one encore instead of two.
I just return from seeing the TV documentation with excerpts from the 94 tour. You know what a good time I had. Fun was also Don&Walter's comments about the forgotten harmonies! Btw, I would like the '96 version of Reeling in the Years' chorus with the original voicing (you didn't remember that cool descending voice, did you)... RubyPearl: Your kids sure love you. As we do! I think I'll buy me a spare turntable before they're completely obsolete, just to be able to play that old stuff 20 years from now. UK starnger: Well yeah, lotsa strangers from across the globe here. Welcome scurvy brother. StAl: Hey! I almost missed the new stuff, having my image loading optioned out for bandwidth reasons. Sure like your style. Roo-Dee!! So glad you made this happen! I mean, what if the Banyan site would've bee abanyandoned ... Can't think about this. Singing voulez voulez voulez vous. Looking forward to see ya. P.S. Would somebody care to tell me how the will-call tickets thing with TM works. Give this poor little jermann boy a hand! Email me, pls. I mean, I have a reservation number for two tix at The Gorge. What to do now?
Adding my kudos -- re Rudy's: "Nice. . .sure looks good." And the graphics? YOWIE. Our cats, Elizabeth Bennet and The Kelly Temp Cat, send their best regards to Casey, the virtual cat. Lizzie and Kelly likewise add, "Me-yowie." "For best results observe the R.I.A.A. curve. . ."
Mr.Silvers: thinking about adding Nice Guy Eddie (my big tail-less shorthair) to the page somewhere. He leads with his big butt. THUMP. Temp cats, eh...you got them on rotation? Do cats really get into their work if they're only temps? "Yes, welcome to 'Inside the Kitty Crapper 5000 with Steely Dan'..." meow
Re: Geographical references: Last time I was in the States ('94)I happened to drive west on Sunset to the sea ....also I happened to be in TJ on a Sunday....in the meantime in NYC, my brother-in-law happened to point his car down Seventh Avenue...hmmm, I wonder what it all means? Hey St.Al: Is there any chance of a "sub-page" for SD musicians to discuss the Dan in musical terms so we don't have to bore the rest of the crowd? I'd love to see what other players are up to with regard to techniques, chords, arrangements equipment, studio personnel, newly discovered SD guitar licks, and so on. One more thing: on King of the World, the lyric in Steely Dan Complete, goes, "...when you come around, no more pain and no regrets, watch the sun go brown, smoking COBALT cigarettes? I always though it was 'coke on cigarettes'. Also, on Sign in Stranger, what's the 'conch-con-Jacques'? Still trying to get to the Promised Land; hope I make it out of this piece of island cooling in the sea, and actually catch the shows as well as the Danvention. Another question for the Dan survey: Other than SD, what other stuff do you listen to? It'd be interesting to compare musical roots and interconnections among the faithful. ....about three or four years ago, our local radio station kept airing this tune by'Toy Matinee', which at the time I felt was simple Dan mimickry...who were those guys?
Greetings all. Gotta luv the Steely Dan Empire. I must admit, I'm not the generic fan-type, I actually produce industrial/techno/noise and rap music. However, amidst the Tribe Called Quest CDs and the old Ministry albums, I have all the Steely Dan albums... Excellent engineering. Wacky writing... It seems 80 - 90% of the songs are about drugs, guns, sex, and violence. Gotta luv it. I guess Steely Dan has more in common with Ice-T than one would think. hehe. I really like those live camera shots of the studio. That's brilliant. keep up the good work TPD
ATTENTION!!! I was emailed today by Pete Fogel. They have announced the U.K. dates, September 9th and 10th at Wembley and the 12th in Birmingham. I already have 2nd row center. BTW there are no ventions of any kind allowed in England (not sure about the rest of Europe). Also, you get a better choice of tickets if you notify TB of the U.K. that you will be wearing teal to the show.
...now WHY would it matter what COLOR you're wearing to TB...? ..and are cobalt smokes like clove smokes? Where can you pick 'em up? rudeeeeee
M.D. DOC Kelly: hey man i got my tickets about a month ago-you might want to check into that. Ruby Baby: Records, what info do you have for me honey? Short Post Keep the brotherhood, Pioneer
EXACTLY!!!
Can any major dudes provide copy of VH-1 tape-pls Email -will provide all materials if desire.
StAl, Rudy - some cherce sheet on this page, dudes, very class, very class indeed. There's also a new batch o' mail in the SD website mailroom. With only you, and what I've found...
If you build it, he will come. I already have my tickets for Wembley.
While attending a Steely Dan concery at the Shoreline Ampitheater in Mountainview, Ca I overheard an observation made by a nearby fan. I would really like to share it with you all, because I believe you will appreciate it as much as me. This particular fan was amazed at the demographics of the audience. The contrast amoung fans was huge!!! There were people in their teens and people in their 70's. All walks of life could be seen. I think that any band capable of drawing that kind of band is truly amazing. But then again, we all know why everyone loves them so - they are awesome!! Anyhow, thank's for listening. P.S.: The encore was my old school, by far the best Steely I've heard yet...
Doc, I'm still here...when ever things are convieniant...no worries on this end! Rudy, Bookmarked the place for further investigation...opening page is way cool! Also thanks for the help to St.Al, he's doing a helluva job here! I've changed my handle from Guitarman to Midnite Cruiser on all the chat lines that I frequent so if you see me anywhere out there I'll be MC...went into Global Chat as SteelyDan the other night...MC wouldn't fit in the box. I'll be at the July 7th show in Raleigh, NC at Walnut Creek...I'll have a set list the next day posted on here...any other scurvy brothers or sisters gonna be there? Let me know!!! This is the second show of the tour so the set list will be new to most of you. Later everyone...5am here and the sun's coming up...been a long night..."Tell me where are you driving Midnite Crusier, where is your bounty of fortune and fame?" St.Al...I remembered this time!!!
Gotta question for anyone re: the DanCam. When I try to access it on CIS, all I seem to get is a picture of programming code, presumably that which was used to write the page. However, I -am- able to view from my Netscape browser at work. Perhaps CIS needs to get their act together and give me a better browser. Whaddaya think??? To StAl: Love the changes on your page, especially the new pictures and the link to Rudy's. To Rudy: Now all of us allergic Cyber Cats have the consolation of visiting with Casey whenever we like - THANKS
A little reminder.... For those of you who are just sitting around tonight, we should shoot for a meeting in the chat room at 7:00pm PST. For those who need more info in regards to address and channel, CLICK HERE. See you all later, Just to let all you Steely Fans know, there is a high school marching band that will be playing Steely Dan tunes. Beavercreek High School's fall season's musical selections are all from Steely Dan. If you want any info on our performances, contact me at the e-mail address above. We are from the Dayton, Ohio area.
Hello, scurvy brethren. Home at last. I've missed you all and can see that many changes have occurred. This is beautiful, StAl et al. I'm seeing them in Irvine 8/9. This will be a first for me. I'm very excited about this. Try again tomorrow
hey midnite... I'll be there (raleigh) as well, where are you sittin'? "roll out the battle apple, we'll shake 'em all down tonight, we're gonna mix in the street" RUDY
To Andy Syd.- A high school band that plays Steely? Really? WAY COOL!! When I was in high school, I played the flute and we never did anything as wonderful as that. I would hug the band leader, if I could. To ST.Al- I am loving the way you do this Steely Page stuff! My life is hectic and crazy and sometimes my favorite part of the day is exploring the Steely Dan site. I've cruised a few other sites - not as classy, not as interesting, NOT AS FUN! "No flies on me!" Thank-you!!! To Peg and Josie - I am going to make my own green earings to wear to the Hollywood Bowl. Can't find decent ones around here in the stores. If they come out looking great, would you like some? (I ain't wearing any tacky home-made lookin' hardware!) To Pioneer - I'll give you the scoop next time, guy. Gotta go! Sorry Angel I get hungry Like a child RubyPearl
Hey you scurvy bros. and sisters. Just came from Pathfinder's chat site and...NONE OF YOU WERE THERE! Except for StAl and Bli-Blip. We had a *very interesting* conversation, thank you. StAl: You are the coolest. (It's still under my hat). ...Won't you pour me a Cuban Breeze, Gretchen?...
Yeah, Steve, wazzup with that? I suppose something dramatic would have to happen to get more hats in the chatroom - any ideas? honey I will be there, yes I'll be there...
Only a few in chat last night. You really outta make a point of showing. You never know who's gonna show up... Bli-blip -- Like a fine wine, these things take time to develop. and I've drunken no holy wine save muscatel
EUROPEAN NEWS ! After having planned my Summer Holiday around the Oregon and Washington shows, I now hear that the Dan are coming to Europe. I've been checking the Net for news but nothing. Today, I've heard from two sources that they are playing Wembley in September. ( The 8th or 18th ) Apparently it's being announced in the papers and on the radio. I missed it because I've been on the Net all this time. Mike
Against my better judgement (guests to entertain) I missed the Chat last nite... AAARRGH! ARRRGH! my ears are BURNIN! (who put that Q-tip in my cuervo...?)
I can only speculate on the incident in Donald's early years that led him to associate milkmen and screaming. It shows up in "My Rival" ("the milktruck eased into my space, somebody screamed somewhere") and in Tomorrow's Girls ("and then the milkman screamed and pointed up at the sky"). Are there any other references I might have missed? Anyway, my favorite theory is that Don's father killed their milkman for making time with D's mom. Anyone else care to contribute an idea?
Allow me to change direction for a momment. During last nights chat session the question was raised about the connection between Steely Dan and the Dead, and why so many Deadheads dig the Dan? Given the fact they both play rock and roll, Steely Dan is the antithesis of The Grateful Dead. Why then the connection? Why is there a graphic at the bottom of SD's own web site that says "Welcome Deadheads"? I know how I feel. I love the Dead. I've seen them over a dozen times. To compare the 2 bands is a mistake. In fact, to compare any band to the Dead is a mistake. I'll try not to throw out all the bullshit cliche's, but, the only way to put it is the Dead is more a state of mind, having a lot to do with music, but not everything. The Dead represent a loose, rambling, free-form style, where as Steely Dan's is perfection and grace. I'm not gonna say that part of the lure of the Dead isn't/wasn't drug induced. There is something about seeing the Dead play live. The way the music pulses through your body. The ability the band has to take you on a journey. All of these things are what appeal to me in the Deads music. Some of the same things that appeal to me in the Dan's music. So what is my point? There is none, really, except for the fact that both bands are very musical. Steve Cox take note. To say the Dead are not musical is a mistake. As I said last night, you need to listen harder. To say the band is not talented is a mistake as well. The Dead's music is, at times, equally complex. Take songs like "The Eleven", or, "St Stephan". Complex time signatures in both. Nevermind the fact they stopped playing them live because they were too difficult..... I sorely miss the thought of not getting to see the Dead play this summer. It was around this holiday, last year that I last saw them. I knew when I walked out of there that was going to be the last time. Jerry died a few months later. I will/do miss him. I take solace in the fact that my favorite all time band is going out on summer tour. So it's not all lost. But wait! What the f*#% am I gonna do next year?!?!?! waaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!! And if anybody tells me to get a life. You can just bite me. After all, it's only rock and roll..... Every Deadhead I know really digs Steely Dan. This isn't the case if you turn that around. Maybe Deadheads are a little more open minded? Maybe they are a little more dense? One things for sure. There aren't many tight assed, pompus, musical snobs who are Deadheads. There are, however, a few "Danheads" I could say that about. In closing, I feel it is a groove thing. BOTH bands make me want to shake it! StAl
OK StAl... Tell me your 4 favorite Dead tunes and I will check them out... (Just because i got a Grammy doesn't mean I'm pompous...but I used to be a real jazz nazi). Yesterday i listened to a Pantera CD for no reason except to hear the most amazing CRUNCH guitar sound ever. And I play piano, not guitar, and don't really like Metal. So close-minded I am not. I'll listen to the Dead if you will listen to Charles Ives...deal? ....he wears a hearing aid...
Rudy... After checking out your home page I see you're inRaleigh...guess I'm just a tad slow...anyway, I'm about 90 minutes away in Danville, VA....take 86 south to Chapel Hill and get on 40 and I'm there...I'm 2nd row center for the show, but maybe we can get together before...it's me, the wife and another couple but I'll be down the night before for the Allman Brothers so I may just stay in town overnight...let me know what you think...I'll be checking in here regularly or you can do the e-mail thingy...see ya! St.Al... reading your comments above...I'd have to say I agree...I never close myself off to any type of music...not to say I like everything I listen to but if you don't take chances you miss out on too much good stuff...As you almost said above..."I know it's only Rock'n'Roll but I like it!" I know, it's not the Dan but it seemed appropriate...Later fans.....
THEY'RE COMING TO LONDON Yes, the tickets are on sale now. Wembley Arena 9th & 10th September. See you there. Mike
"...it's all big talk, big names, big noise, New York..."
RubyPearl - Yes!!! StAl - OK, same as Steve; tell me your 4 favorite Dead songs, and I promise to listen to all four with an open mind. I've not yet heard one of their songs that I like, but maybe it's because I switch the station too soon??? Peg.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, could someone (George, Josie) please POST any more Danvention details. I'm going on a long journey soon and will have no internet access for a while. Thank you. Also, the Dead have been known to be cool every now and then, but Nasty deadheads are WHACK.
Regarding the Dead: I've many Deadhead friends... been to several concerts with them (while in the same frame of mind, I might add)... I've tried to understand why my friends connected (in a religious fashion) with the Dead and I didn't... I suppose I was already into the Dan and many fusion jazz artists... being the musical snob I am (I've realized this late in life) I felt that if I succumbed to the Dead I would be regressing... now I realize that music is a physical brain chemistry sort of thing and different sounds turn different brains on... on the other hand, I seem to be turned on physically (and mentally, which is, I guess, still a physical chemical activity in the brain) by more complex music... I suppose there is a certain amount of social peer pressure to "get with the program" and follow a particular band... anyway, what I'm taking a long time to say is... hell, I don't know...
Rrrrrrrrruuuuuuuuudddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyy: That great lyric (and idea) is courtesy of Paul Simon, eh? How 'bout SET 2? ANYBODY: Where is the band rehearsing for the tour?????? Re: Milkman references: Maybe Donald's favorite movie was the mid-seventies classic, "It's Alive". Great scene in it of mutant baby devouring the milkman. Looked like strawberry milk running out the back of the truck. Maybe? Or Maybe Not. But overall, I believe the milkman is symbolic of yesteryear, a time when there was home delivery of the staples like milk, ice, coal, etc... However, this pretzel logic doesn't explain the reference in a song about the future, but anyway. Went golfing over the weekend. Anytime I hit an elevated fairway from the tee, I refered to the fairway as the "good time flats" (Teahouse). Remember now! Hit the fairway - Good time flats. Fairway: Good time flats. Got it? Speaking of FLAT, whaddaythink Walter means by "my hat is still too flat"? "My English, she is better now, but my hat is way to flat."
The Dead 'n The Dan... There have been a myriad number of Dead musical incarnations over the melenium to satisfy a wide vsriety of musical tastes. From jazz to bluegrass to folk to rock, etc... Even the hardened jazz snob can find some real jewels in The Dead repertoire. Hell, Jerry has been involved in several collabrative efforts with one Ornette Coleman. Does this not qualify as sophisticated/ complex music? Jerry has also appeared on projects that included the likes of Pat Metheny and Bella Fleck for those with an ear for "fusion". As far as jazz influenced Dead tunes, how 'bout Franklin's Tower or Estimated Prophet or Unbroken Chain or etc, etc, etc... There's plenty there for even the most discriminating of musical tastes. It could be argued that The Dead, with it's long tradition of improvisation in a live setting, is in fact closer to the jazz tradition than is The Dan, with their structure and tight knit control of the music All this music related stuff aside, probably the most significant "connection" between The Dead and The Dan are their mutual ties to the beat poets, writers and artists of the '40's and '50's... This is the essence of these two bands. They are both deeply rooted in a single musical/cultural philosophy, the only real difference is how the beat style manifested itself in their two distinct approaches to the music. For anyone interested, there's an excellent treatise of the whole Dead/Dan debate by one Jim McKay of "Steely Fan Mailing List" fame in the archives of that list... check it out... Just my 2 cents... JM
Just Curious. I've been reading the last couple of weeks about how ccooooll Rudy's is, so I decided to check into it. What am I missing? What does an advertisement for a graphics company and a few paitings by some unknown artists have to do with Steely Dan? So let me get this straight, if I were to scan some pictures of D&W from some old magazine, include my favorite Dan songs, and put them next to my company's logo, would I have a really cool Dan page too? Sounds like false advertising to mmmeeee. Does this make sense to yyyooouuuu?
No, Kinky, your page would not be really cool, too. The vibes would be all wrong, a real negative place to go.
Kinky, if you could do design like that, you could put a scan of your, uh, thumb next to a logo of General Motors and it would be cool (I suppose the next question is: "design like *what*?")
Hey, I never dissed the page itself, mechanically, it was put together well (as it should be, since we are all now aware that RRRRuuuudddyyyy has a graphic design company). My question is what is the page, a forum to display obscure artwork, an ad for his company, or a personal page to show us his collection (3) of old SD pictures, and his opinions of favorite Dan works? Should'nt the SD Links page be used only for SD topics, rather than misleading fans to an unrelated business advertisement? As much as it costs to be online, I don't enjoy spending my time scrolling through endless paintings, waiting to find something that has any relevance the Dan (since this is a link to their page). Again, what does this have to do with SD, all I got out of it was where to go for a graphic designer when I'm in Raleigh (in about a month), and how to make beef stew. Ungratefully Yours, KKKKIIIINNNNKKKKKYYYYYYY (obnoxious, isn't it?)
Having a bad hair day, Kinky? Methinks Kinky is REALLY asking for a date while in Raleigh (in about a month). As for the links, I'm willing to see what may develop out of it, just like anything else cyber. Possibly something Dan-ish enough to satisfy even Kinky could result. Three lefts make a right. Right?
Kinky? I think you take this whole Steely Dan thing too serious. Perhaps you're one of them TIGHT-ASSED musical snobs I was referring to in an earlier post? Boy, am I having fun now!!! Wearin' my asbestos suit. I am ready! What does everybody know about the "Dan" fest in L.A. in early August? Hope to catch it. Hey D.D. you the man!!!!
Are any younger Dan Fans (15-25)from N.W. Indiana going to the big show at the world Aug 2????? I live in the Portage area and if u r, e-mail me!!!!!
Who are these children who scream and run wild? HEY...YOU GUYS...CUT THAT OUT! Kinky and StAl, you should be ashamed of yourselves - Don't you remember what happens to the BIG ONES. If I were a graphic designer BY VOCATION, I know what I'd be doing with my ability...and as for further links, just click back when you're bored. Are the upcoming dates beginning to tense you all up? Take something - and make it strong, and make it now. Yours in patronage, OKStranger?
I initially started Rudy's as a way to express my love for cooking....since my love for the Dan surpasses culinary delights (and since I only HAVE old SD images to offer), I decided to put a Dan twist on the site. I do not sell anything. I cook. I love the Dan. I make pretty pictures. period. Kinky, you just happened to come across a couple of pages referring to my wife's endeavors...can't just go on having fun without at least APPEARING professional, now can I? People tend not to take you seriously otherwise...(seems I had NO problem with this...) ...and as far as not enjoying spending your precious time SCROLLING THROUGH ENDLESS PAINTINGS, WAITING...get out of my gallery, man. You obviously missed the point (again). If you don't want to see my work, DON'T CLICK ON MY LINK. That goes for all of you looking for another Steely Dan Internet Resource. I'm not in that scene. Nothing to offer but images and recipes. That's it. ...and you don't mind if I tell you to stick your flamethrower up your ass. I'm too busy to rant at your feeble attempts at garnering attention. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu ddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
Go on Rudy!!! Allo to everyone! Josie here. No, I haven't forgotten about you all, but I 've been super busy with stuff at Yale. Yes, the danVention is still on, and I will hopefully speak to the cover band boys today. I am working of hotel accomodations for everyone, and should have some info soon. In a few weeks I will post official info on the Digest as well as here. Hope to meet you all in August. St. Al, the page looks great! "What a burner when you take off your goggles and find..." .Josie.
We interrupt this (raw) flame war for a special announcement. Please put down your torches and cease from firing in the hole.... There is the growing possibility of a CHICAGOLANDANVENTION especially for those who will be in the Chicago area between August 1 and 3 and cannot attend the L.A. connection--er, convention--the following week. (Of course, it's open to all who are interested.) I've received a number of responses from Danheads who will be in town that weekend for the Tinley Park and Alpine Valley shows--mostly out-of-towners looking for seats or hoping to hook up with fellow Danheads. There is talk of local radio sponsorship and gratuitous Dan-related offerings. E-mail me if you're interested. More To Come. 'DUDE: I survived Sun Mountain...above the sea...rough road...but now I'm down, down, down, down, down....and my fingers are intact, so LET'S JAM!! Later, Lucky H.
To Midnight Cruiser: we are significantly closer to a snail mail endeavor... To A Pioneer: guitarist #1 has our tix... he paid for 3 & I paid for 9... I had to leave $ in his hand for the purchase so I could attend an important business gig... he failed to look at a seating chart to determine which end of the row he wanted... hasn't found a chart yet... I'll probably have to go to the local Ticketbastard outlet, copy the chart, then go get the tix from him... To Lucky Henry: we don't need to be reminded of our most recent loss... oh well, we're already looking forward to the first official practice of the new season... REGARDING A CHICAGO DANVENTION: I'm all for it... depending on the details... I need to book my flight relatively soon... will have to be back in Lawrence by Sunday morning... have Sting tix that evening... Guitarist #1 will be with me, possibly Guitarist #2, I can bring my bass... the 3 of us can play Deacon Blues with no problems (The Goodbye Look, also), #2 and I can get through My Old School easily enough, I used to know Don't Take Me Alive, Reelin', Bodhisattva, Black Friday, Time Out Of Mind, Peg, and Kid Charlemagne... it wouldn't take too long to polish them up... I suppose others could be learned... this could be fun! To Rudy: Lacey Davenport, my feline friend, enjoyed your page... See y'all later, Doc
ST AL How can you possibly say that I take this SD thing too seriously, when you are the one putting the most time and effort into this. rUDY If you have "nothing to offer but images and recipes", you should be linked to Betty Crocker's homepage. Just because I collect coins and like Pink Floyd, I don't link my coin page to Pink Floyd's and misleadingly subject their fans to my hobby. But, I guess if I include a picture of Roger Waters and David Gilmour, it would make it relevant. Josie, just curious, what's the age requirement for the Danvention? Just want to make sure that you don't accidentally exclude yourself.
Major Dude: You got the quote bubba. As far as set two...perhaps a little slower: Royal Scam | Boston Rag | Fire in the Hole | Time Out of Mind | Turn That Heartbeat Over Again | IGY | New Frontier (for the finale). Encore: I Can't Function, no shorter than 20 mins. Sure, they won't play it, but it's my dream set list. Rudy (the culinary Pied Piper to misguided Steely Dan fans everywhere)
You know something kINKYsOnsO, you're right. I quit..... I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE. kidding StAl PS. And another thing! I guess I cant bitch about people posting twice anymore...... PSS. To UKStranger. I dont want to and you cant make me. I'm having too much fun here. However, any information you have regarding the Wembley shows would be great. Such as phone numbers and the such. Thanks!
I don't know what it is, but cooking and Steely Dan go together. Cooking is my hobby. You name it, I'll cook it. And I cook to the Dan best of all! I love to cook Italian with Pretzyl Logic in the backround. I love to cook Sweedish with Royal Scam. I'll bake anything to Katy Lied. Countdown to Esctacy is perfect for preparing seafood of all kinds. Irish stew (any meat&potatoes) to Can't Buy A Thrill. Of course, Aja is the thing for Far East cuisine. I've found Goucho to be good for clean up. When you cook to the Dan, desert comes to you! Hey, Rudy, do you even know what I mean? Pan Fry the Big Ones! RubyPearl Pioneer: I know where to get a vinyl Countdown in mint cond. plus a few other rare demo things. All reasonably priced plus I know how to bargain. (Tact, poise and reason then gently squeeze)
Thanks to the Digest guys-just secured table @ Las Veges Hard Rock gig-see you who have taken the oath of sacrifice @ Charleston opener,Tampa(write if need tix assist),with West Palm(killer new open air amphitheater-no echo like @ say-Great Woods and most of your other "shed" format venues-and last but not least Aug 10 8:30pmMST band goes on Las Veges(probable site of it's own hardcore de facto Danvention).
Does anybody can suggest a n+ch hotel close to Irvine Meadows? We are a party of 5 dans amigos from sonora mexico (with a passaport in our hands!)
Check out http://www.mcs.com/~bingo/lyrics.html#Steely and contribute some if you can think of any.
The Rudinator!! Kickin' some pompus ass! All right, I love it!
My first time here. Great visuals. I like all SD songs, but especially the last two albums cover to cover.
RubyPearl: y'know, although I love to listen to the Dan ANY TIME of the day, I must admit, I don't listen to anything while I cook. (I think it's because I don't have my speakers wired to the kitchen - gotta fix that) I haven't even thought about what the different albums could bring out in me...what a good thought. Normally I would think you'd wanna go Mediterranean with Royal Scam (lots of Turkish-Moroccan influences)...I need to ponder the rest. Anyone else have a favorite album to cook to? C'mon, Kinky REALLY wants to know. roux die
Major Dude... If you read the "Dueling Pundits" thing on 11TOW on the pathfinder Dan page I think you'll see what you're looking for on "My Hat Is Way Too Flat". Then again, I could be wrong... St.Al...**LOL**...twice!!! First the one on quitting, then the one on double posting! Carry on with the great work! Rudy...I think Kinky's just trying to get some attention...now where's that ignore button? Doc...always here, ever ready....you da man! All: I've really been getting into 11 Tracks of Whack lately....it's become my favorite Danesque thing to listen to. Especially "Hard Up Case", that bad ass groove and the interplay between guitars and horns is just so cool....sang that damn song all night at work last night!!! Hope Walter will break down and grace us with that one... you say the truth is gonna set me free...like you might throw a dog a bone...I know you're thinking that the jokes on me...just take a look at what you're draggin' home....Another Hard Up Case...
'Conch con Jacques' on Sign in Stranger? I always thought it was 'Can-Can Jacques. And yes I know this is old news. And yes I also know it says 'Conch con Jacques' in the songbook. But I don't care. Who's coming to the Wembley gig on September 9th then? Stiff Is there gas in the car? Yes there's gas in the caaaaaaar.
Nosotros debemos que calmo downo ahora. Si uds. quieren bitchar at each other, lo hace over e-mail. $252 per vegas ticket WHAT A BARGAIN!!! Thanks alot whoever was responsible for that. I'll take "STANDING" FOR $60, Alex.
ZOMBIE: Exactamente. Que mondo bonito lo sera.
Salutoni da Firenze, ITALIA. Stiamo ancora aspettando un concerto in Italia degli Steely dan. Spero che mi accontenterete quest'anno. I'm waiting for your reply. LUNGA VITA A DONALD E WALTER.
REX COCKS--I must be the "pompus" ass you're talking about, but, hey, you can't spell.
Word is today that TAMPA show is CANCELED-in favor of ORLANDO on an as yet confirmed date-great news for people who actually like to HEAR great music-Tampa venue is Steinbrenner's new Yankee(spring training) Stadium and is a farce as a concert venue-acoustically and seating setup.I'd like to think it was changed because someone from the mgmt co actually got a look at the setup or got feedback from partipants in the fist two openers at the "baseball field"(R.Stewart&CSN/Chicago)and were thus compelled TO DO THE RIGHT THING and move it to the ORLANDO ARENA-an AWESOME VENUE!-HERES HOPING YOU GUYS AREN'T SIMPLY CANCELLING "THE DATE" ALL TOGETHER- "It's a beggars life said the Queen of Spain-but don't tell it to a poor man-'Cause he's got to kill for every thrill The best he can"
Re: cooking to the Dan, I own a small chain of Mexican restaurants, as well as a couple of Mediterranean joints (named after that 60s hang-out in Berkeley, the Café Mediterranean) and I can tell tou that at any given time there is a Dantune wafting through the kitchen as well as the dining area. Cooking tip: CBAT is best in general...the Nightfly is great for bar area, as well as 11TOW, although the staff really gets going when that Sting song with the 'burritos' reference comes on... Zombie: Eres un genio, estoy riendo hasta ahora... Oye, Kinky, que pasa, hija? I'm gonna ask one more time, where can I get accurate guitar tab for SD music?
I love it! Hey Kinky, you guessed right, you are the pompous ass ( and a lot of other things I won't mention in this civilized forum) that I'm talking about. How smart of you to notice! I'll bet you're starting to think you're quite a wiz (at least your Daddy probably tells you that. That is, if you've ever met him.) By the way Stinky, if you want to start flaming me, especially with the vulgarity, take it to e-mail...I really doubt that the other folks who come to this page want to read your vulgarity and profanity. I don't know if you've noticed, but a lot of people here seem to think that you are a bit of an asshole. Hell, you're smart enough to figure that one out, aren't you? Isn't there an alt.teen.jerk forum where you would be happier? Are you so sophomoric that you think that spelling my name 'Cocks' bugs me? C'mon! I really think that must be a part of the anatomy that is on your mind quite a bit, isn't it?. Would a therapist of some sort help you any? Maybe that's why you call yourself 'Kinky', Stinky. Personally, I think you need a kick in the head. I'd love to be the one who gives it to you. Let me know if you ever get to Oklahoma City. Have a nice day, wuss.
